Over the last decade, Ireland has established itself as an international hub of fashion producing some of the world’s finest contemporary fashion designers, and they’re only getting better. From industry leaders to new innovators, heritage brands to emerging designers, Irish traditions are slowly becoming part of the latest global fashion trends. Fashion is a mirror of our society and there’s always something new emerging. The infectious energy of the next generation of design talent continues to ignite imaginations and push possibilities beyond our wildest dreams. Some of the best designers in the world refuse to obey the rules, instead they make their own. True fashion is when there are no restrictions and boundaries, at all. With millennials no longer swept away by traditional luxury alone, the new generation has developed a growing appetite for fresh and alternative brands. The dominance of social media platforms and the ever-growing number of collections have changed the way we perceive the fashion world. Revivals are rife, and have been for the past decade at least. Are we looking back rather than forward? History is comforting because the past is assured, that much we know. Perhaps the future is with those that push the boundaries to develop original works and ideas that will influence the industry and challenge their skills. There is something special about knowing you are buying into something that started as an idea and was carried out by the hand of an artisan to create something that is a truly considered design. The important thing is not to look back, but look around. Take note of what’s going on around us. Embrace the new uncertainties and challenge the old boundaries. It’s not a case of destroying traditions, far from it. It is an acknowledgment that evolution, perhaps, isn’t enough – revolution is the only way to move us out of the comfort of complacency.

This can involve anything from assisting with personal care, supporting persons with limited mobility, practical household duties, collecting of prescriptions and shopping. The great work they do would not be possible without their excellent care staff. Mum’s theWord!
The bond between a mother and daughter is without a doubt one of the most powerful and complex relationships. The best friend, the confidant, the shopping companion, the reliable babysitter – the list is endless. Their love and affection continues for a lifetime. PHOTOGRAPHY BY SEAN MCCORMACK Mother’s Day should be a year-round celebration. Not just one day in the calendar, not just a card, but a lifetime of a gift. We meet six incredible ladies who celebrate their special bond by embracing the unique love they share for each other. Everything mothers do for us and for those around them is special, by definition.
Mary Plunkett, a WW coach in Galway for the last 23 years, is enjoying the transition from mother to grandmother after the arrival of her two beautiful grandchildren just a few weeks ago. We meet Mary and her daughter, Morna Daly, who welcomed baby Cian and Cara into the world on 22 January. Morna, firstly congratulations on the birth of your two beautiful babies. You look incredible! How are you finding life with two newborns? My husband is still on paternity leave and with a besotted granny and auntie around, I have loads of help! We are just so in love with them, they have us wrapped around their little fingers already! I’ll need to start working on a routine though as it will be just me and the twins soon when things settle down and they all have to go back to the real world! Were you shocked when you found out you were having twins? My husband Mike was more shocked than me. I’ll never forget his face! I was more worried than anything as I wanted to make sure everything would be alright.
8 | GALWAYnow
They have been there for us through the good, the bad and the unexpected. A little understanding goes a long way. After all, they love us no matter what, no expectations or requirements. So embrace the good times, take nothing for granted and cherish the love that is all around us. That’s all that matters.
Did you know their gender before they were born? Yes, we knew we had a boy at 16 weeks but Cara kept us in suspense until the 28 week scan. Nobody could call whether she was a girl or a boy! How did you decide on names? We discussed some names with family and friends but you can tell by people’s faces when they don’t like them! That’s why we decided to keep the names we picked to ourselves until they were here. Cara Mollie Daly – Mollie after my grandmother who passed away last year and Cian Iver Daly – Iver was Mike’s grandfather’s surname so it’s a tribute to him. Mary, your daughter is now a mother. Looking at her journey so far, is it very different from when you were a new mum? It’s not all that different. Babies still need the same things – feeding, changing and somewhere warm to sleep. Once they have the basics, along with lots of love and cuddles, everything else is just cosmetic. What has changed though is all the modern bits. I’ve never seen so many new gadgets for babies! Morna has been buying non-stop since she was 20

weeks pregnant. She has bouncer chairs that she controls with her phone, and a buggy that cost more than my first car! We didn’t have anything like that 35 years ago. Car seats weren’t even a thing when I had my first 37 years ago. I remember bringing my son home in a moses basket on my knee. Imagine doing that now! Did you ever feel like your career impeded you as a mother, or that you had to choose between the two? Mary: Never. I was very fortunate that I started working for WW when my kids were young so I could choose my hours at the beginning. It was very flexible for family life so I could drop the kids off in the morning and go back and do a few hours again after I collected them from school. As the kids got older and more independent, I increased my hours so I never felt the guilt that I know some mothers struggle with. Morna: It’s still very early into my maternity leave but I am planning to return to work. I’m also very lucky to work for a great MARCH 2019

multinational company who offer flexi-time and teleworking. I work with a fantastic team who will allow me to have a plan that will work best for everyone. What is your favourite thing about motherhood? Morna: When they gaze up at me during feeding or when they wrap their tiny little hands around my finger – that just makes my heart melt! Mary: The first few weeks when your baby sleeps on your chest are just so precious. They grow out of that stage so quickly so savour every moment. What is the most challenging thing about motherhood? Mary: I enjoyed it all so much that nothing ever felt like a challenge. You do constantly worry for your kids safety and that doesn’t go away. Even now that they are in their thirties, I still worry about them all. MARCH 2019
Morna: Worrying! As a new mother, every noise they make is still so new to me so any little peep out of them makes me want to check them. Night feeds with twins can be a little tricky to say the least! What has been the most surprising thing about motherhood? (What people don't tell you!) Morna: That baby blues are a real thing! I didn’t think it would hit me as I’m such an easygoing person. You read about it and you don’t think it will affect you but the hormones are no joke after having a baby! It took me a full week to feel normal again and not cry at the drop of a hat. It’s so important to have as much help as possible during those days. Be kind to yourself and know that it’s 100% normal, and it will pass. After a good night’s sleep and a shower, I am a new woman!
“
These babies are the dream and they are loved beyond words.
Mary, are you enjoying being a grandmother? It’s a love like no other. It’s completely different to your love for your own children but it’s just as strong. These babies are the dream and they are loved beyond words. How do you think it will differ from motherhood? After losing my own mother last year, these babies are just so precious to us as she was such a big part in all of our lives. We had such a tough year but when we found out that Morna was expecting twins, it brought so much joy and love back into our lives. We all joke that it’s a good job Morna had two babies as one wouldn’t be enough to go around! Do you have any advice for new mums? Motherhood is amazing, but it’s also hard. As long as you are kind to yourself and know you are doing the best job you can, that’s all your children need. Everything else will fall into place.

Joanne Murphy (right), the voice behind Tri Talking Sport, chatted to us alongside her mum Joan and sister Michelle about the power of teamwork, the silver lining on every cloud, and how they have inspired one another. Congratulations Joanne on your recent appointment as President of the Galway branch of BPW. Can you tell us a little bit about your role? We are a local club, part of the Irish Network of BPW, which is a tributary of an international federation of clubs from around the world. We aim to share, educate, and give a voice to women. A lot of people assume it’s just for people who are self-employed or run businesses, that’s not the case. We are for people across the arts, nurses, teachers, bankers, accountants – anyone in a professional capacity. The more people participate, the more friends you’ll make and relationships you’ll build. Of course,

it will have a knock-on effect on your business too, which is a plus. Much like my mother and sister, this group of women have supported me and inspired me, and that’s what we are about. How do you inspire one another? Joanne: The reason we moved to Galway is because my father, Richard, passed away unexpectedly in 2004. Mum is originally from Bushypark and we moved back after Dad’s passing. Michelle has a mild form of cerebral palsy and epilepsy, but she’s an incredibly strong person. She enrolled in a Master’s in NUIG, despite suffering from post-traumatic stress and huge epilepsy issues that saw her having major surgery 10 years ago. She has worked in the Galway City Council for the past 10 years and has never let her disability hold her back. Sometimes I still look at her as a girl, but she’s such a strong woman. I am so proud of

what she has achieved considering the obstacles that have been put in her way. Michelle: When you’ve got a child or a sister with a disability, it adds a very different dynamic to a family. The lengths Mum and Dad went to, to ensure I got the best care possible and the best opportunities in life, were endless. Looking at the physical aspect of strength is one thing, but the emotional and mental strength that Mum had to be able to bring us back to Galway and rebuild our lives was just incredible. She moved to Cork with Dad back in 1976, with no family down there, and after he passed she moved lock, stock and barrel and created a whole new life, again, here in Galway. She’s certainly not afraid of a challenge. She even set up the Knocknacarra Ladies Group, a fantastic women’s club with a good friend of hers. They have 70 members and they meet every second Thursday. MARCH 2019

Joan: If someone told me before Richard died that I would buy a house, sell a house, and start a new life, no way would I have believed them. You don’t know what you’re capable of until it’s put in front of you. I never picked up a paint brush, a screwdriver, absolutely nothing. I changed the lock on a door and that was my major achievement after being in the house for a couple of months. You take what’s dished out to you when the unexpected occurs. You also have to fight for everything when you have somebody with an illness or disability. We were lucky that Michelle got into Beaumont and received fantastic treatment, that really was the turning point for her. When Richard passed, Joanne really took over as the head of the house and moved down to Galway to support us. Joanne: I moved close enough to get hot dinners a couple of times a week, but not so close that she would be knocking on my door on a Sunday morning! Michelle: I can’t go to the gym because my epilepsy is sound related. A lot of it is under control at the moment, but last year Joanne set up The 12 Days of Christmas Challenge. Essentially to complete 12 hours of activities in that period. I decided to give it a go and I was hooked! This is from a girl that years ago couldn’t walk outside the front door because if I heard a car horn I could fall over and have a fit. To get out there and start doing, that was massive for me. We all went to Barcelona in October to support some of the athletes in the Galway Triathlon Club. While I was there I completed the Irongirl, which is a 3K walk. Now fitness is a big part of my life as I try to push the boundaries and that’s all thanks to Joanne who has inspired my inner athlete to come out! You travel together quite a lot, how do you all get along? Joanne: A lot of people, especially when you are younger, would be quite shocked at the prospect of going on holidays with your mother and sister. I MARCH 2019

actually think it’s a very special thing that we have. Mum will still give out to us for eating crap or spending too much money! And of course, dropping in the usual things ‘when are you getting married, have you found a husband yet?’ When we go on holiday, we’re like three best friends and I think that’s very special because the trauma of Dad dying so suddenly was genuinely so hard. We had to rebuild our lives completely. But we’re stronger in numbers than we are as individuals and we are there to support each other in every way we can. I get the opportunity to work abroad quite a bit. We’ve been to Dubai and Hawaii, and often the two will tag along. In April we’re going to Krakow and then I’m going away to Majorca with a few from the triathlon club so these two will probably join us! Michelle: We do fall out, like any other family. It’s never anything major though as we have learned each other’s ways and routines. Joan: Like we always know Joanne will be out training every day! Michelle will meander off and find a quite place to get a coffee and have some down time. Joanne: I think the fact that I don’t live at home anymore helps, so I don’t cause too much trouble. If I was living at home, I’d probably be out in the shed! Joan, what are you most proud of the girls for? I am so proud of Michelle and how far she has come from her illness. She’s ready to conquer the world. She has been doing physio for the last couple of months and she’s like a new
Michelle. She has a totally different outlook since she did the Irongirl in Barcelona. She’s so much happier in herself. And the other one? Joanne: Oh, the other one! Joan: On the outside she’s like me, but on the inside she’s very much her dad. She sees the good in everyone and she’s such a positive person. She does talk an awful lot though! Joanne: Michelle calls me the hurricane because I come in the door, talk at 90 miles an hour, and leave again! Joan: That’s so true! But what Joanne has achieved is also incredible. She has two Irish cycling records, she does fantastic work with Ironman, and she is an accomplished MC and sports presenter. Her career has flourished but she’s also so generous, she is always there for us. I am so incredibly proud of both of them. What is the most important thing your mother has taught you both? Michelle: To be tough, and to keep going. No matter what you want, go out and believe in yourself and you can do it. Joanne: Decide what you don’t want to do, then you can decide exactly what you want to do. Never give up, and have fun along the way. Neither Mum or Michelle let me get away with much. They keep my feet on the ground and my head out of the clouds. Joan: I always say, it’s better to be born lucky than born rich. For example, how Joanne fell into Ironman. Initially she was training when she was asked to join the team as an announcer, so she had to turn down the gig. But in the meantime, she fractured her pelvis so she was available. Everything happens for a reason. When one door closes, open the door again because that is what a door is for! Joanne: And if the door isn’t there, go and build it yourself!

Jewellery designer Lynsey de Burca lives in Moycullen with her husband Steve and two beautiful sons, Nathan and Dominic. Lynsey designs beautiful pieces with a minimal aesthetic that are inspired by the small harbours along the Wild Atlantic Way. We catch up with Lynsey to see how life has changed since the arrival of her two beautiful boys. Lynsey, tell us a little bit about your life before the boys came along... After graduating from Metal Design in NCAD, I spent several years working in jewellery and fashion retail. Throughout that time, I got a Diploma in Gemmology from NUIG and started my business on a parttime basis. I love designing and making contemporary sterling silver jewellery. Using centuriesold craft techniques, each link from every one of my collections is hand forged in my garden studio. Steve and I got married in 2011. We were childhood sweethearts – we’ve been together since we were 15 so we have a lovely little love story! Our first son Nathan arrived in 2014, followed by Dominic in 2017. Do you find it hard to work full time and be a mother at the same time? The work\life balance is a tricky one! The last four years have been quite a whirlwind for us. From the arrival of our boys to buying our first home, and changing the business into a full-time job, it’s been busy! I now run the business full-time from our purpose-built studio behind our house, so at least I don’t have to worry about commuting and traffic every day!

me for short periods during the day and then I work after they go to bed. But it’s so worth it. I love the freedom of working from home, being my own boss and having the boys with me as well. Do you think that motherhood has changed you? It has totally changed me as a person, in the best possible way. I don’t take things so seriously anymore – it has given me a whole new perspective on life. Before the boys arrived I used to get so caught up in the little things. I spent so much time worrying about things that weren’t important. Motherhood has made me see what is truly important, and that is my family. Did it hold you back from pursuing other avenues with your career? There were a few opportunities which I had to turn down along the way but I think that everything happens for a reason and a better one will come along. And if one doesn’t, I will try and create my own opportunities and seek out new ventures. What is your favourite thing about motherhood? It would have to be the cuddles! I just love them, especially the bedtime story cuddles! I love how you can see their personalities develop so
quickly and how they create their own little ways of doing things. Dominic has really started expressing himself and is coming into his own – he has the funniest facial expressions. He is a real character, you wouldn’t mess with him! Nathan is so different – he is really sensitive and thoughtful. I love how they are so different and it’s just magical watching them grow and learning new things every day. What is the most challenging aspect of being a mother? I think it’s so important to be a good role model, and a good parent. To be constant, mindful, sensitive and encouraging. Remembering to pass on good values and qualities. Teaching them to be kind, good, loving, and happy people. It’s not always easy to do but I think it’s so important. What has been the most surprising thing about motherhood? The amount of unconditional love you hold for your children is just unbelievable. The feeling of warmth, love and pride when you look at their little faces. They can do no wrong! Motherhood is such a fun and loving journey, one that is always evolving and changing. I’m loving every minute of it!
Do the boys go to creche/childcare every day? Nathan, who is four, attends Naíonra every weekday morning and Dominic, our one year old, goes to a childminder one day a week. The other days are a bit of a juggling act between working in the studio, looking after the boys and managing the business. I think we have finally found our feet in the last six months though as we have a nice little routine that works for us now. My days are long as I often take the boys out to the studio with MARCH 2019

According to Oxfam, 821 million people go to bed hungry every night. Statistically, that is 11% of the world’s population. Realistically, it’s a terrifying and distressing fact that cannot be challenged without the help of those who can. Lorraine Keane, journalist and philanthropist, has decided to use her public persona to help combat this crisis to raise essential funding for the affected areas and to increase awareness for the issues occurring in the world around us. The fashionista spoke to GALWAYnow and Rebecca Reilly about her upcoming fundraising event Fashion Relief and her recent trips to the developing world.
Initially I came up with the idea for Fashion Relief after a post I saw on Oxfam’s Facebook”, reveals the mum of two. With a global hunger crisis and the worst famine the world has seen gripping some of the poorest nations, Lorraine was startled by two observations. “In just 12 months from that date, there would be one million more people dead. Not only that, but I work in broadcasting and media and yet this fact was completely new to me. How could this not be making headline news?” Having made regular trips to the developing world every year for the last eight years, working with various

aid agencies and NTO’s, the former Xposé star was struck with how she could help. “I have a different career to most, I wanted to do something that I would enjoy, and something I know a lot about, which is fashion. I approached Oxfam with my idea and so Fashion Relief was born.” EXPERIENCE Journeying to and from the developing world, Keane soon realised the stark difference between the world’s poorest nations and our first world way of life – consumption. “We just have so much. could just sell one of those designer pieces worth, let’s say €200, for €20 on the day? That would feed a family for a week, perhaps even two weeks.” These trips are not ones that Lorraine looks forward to by any means, but the broadcaster feels it is her duty of care because of her fortunate career, and extensive public reach. “It’s sad when people say there is no possible way to end these disasters. That’s not an excuse. These people were born into locations that suffer extreme natural disasters, through no fault of their own. Climate change is a much bigger issue in the developing world. Drought used to hit every 10 years approximately, and it would take a further two years to get out of it. Now these people are being struck with drought every two years. It’s impossible to get out of drought, they are caught in a vicious cycle. They can’t afford to leave, they have nowhere to turn. We are the lucky ones, we have far more than we need, so why wouldn’t we want to help?” SUPPORT Having raised €60,000 at the first Fashion Relief in the RDS last year, the project is now going nationwide. Taking place in The Galmont Hotel & Spa here in Galway on Sunday 19 May, it is easier than ever to get involved. “There are so many ways to get on board. The obvious one is coming along to the event – if you buy tickets in advance you can skip the queue on the day. You can pay at the door on the day too. You can also donate. We are looking for items in good condition, perhaps barely

worn or impulse buys that still have labels, unwanted Christmas gifts, that’s the kind of stuff we’re looking for,” she explains. “People can also join in on the fun and help sell on the day. We have stock and we need people to sell it. You can even encourage your company to do a work place donation drive. We will deliver a container to your place of work and ask staff to donate what they can. We will come back, collect the containers, and sell on the goods. With an entrance fee of just €10, all proceeds raised will go directly to the charity, and to the people who need it. “I will personally be bringing over the money myself,” Lorraine explains. “And I will be coming back and reporting on it. I think it’s imperative that people see that, and know that. Despite not being able to mention any names, Lorraine assures us the line-up of celebs are as stellar as last year, alongside some of our well-loved stores such as Design House Barna, Olivia Danielle, Anne-Marie’s Boutique, Premoli and The Galway Hat Shop, the wares are sure to be of the highest quality and style. “Everyone in the west has been so supportive of the event. From the team at The Galmont to the wonderful Mandy Maher from Catwalk Model Agency, Barry’s Hair Studio and Caroline Downey from Carried Away PR, everything from rails, hair, models and PR has been gifted to us. Ultimately, that means more money can go where it needs to. Local businesses, designers and milliners have also been so generous – you’re a creative bunch in Galway, there must be something in the water!”
“
It’s sad when people say there is no possible way to end these disasters. That’s not an excuse.
OPTIMISM With free fashion shows throughout the day, as well as raffles and an auction, guests will get a chance to watch a host of celebs strut their stuff on the catwalk, donning their wares. “It’s such a fantastic atmosphere in the room, and the bargains are unbelievable. But the most important thing is helping these people. To get out there and give them the tools they need to survive. I think it is the will of any human being to survive. Whether we can provide them with a well for safe drinking water, which in turn means irrigation and a chance to battle drought, or teach them to farm and provide them with the means to do so. It means we can give them independence, along with the skills and resources to be self-sufficient, that’s what it’s all about. It’s not so long ago that we in Ireland were in similar situations ourselves, so I ask you to come along, help in any way you can, and let’s give these people the power to help themselves.”
*
FASHION RELIEF will take place in The Galmont Hotel & Spa on Sunday 19 May from 11am until 5pm with tickets priced at just €10. The event will showcase rails of designer and premium clothes and accessories starting at just €5, with pre-loved celebrity donations and brand new items from designers and retailers across the nation. Attendees will also enjoy two free fashion shows and get advice and styling tips from leading Irish stylists and social influencers on the day. All profits will support Oxfam’s work in some of the world’s poorest countries, helping people to lift themselves out of poverty and thrive as well as saving lives when disaster strikes.

FlyAway with me
Upfront confession: 99% of my own style inspiration comes from the fabulous women I encounter every day. However, I’d be lying if I didn’t admit to being somewhat influenced by certain celebs.
S
o, which celebrity do I think has ‘airport style’ nailed? For me, Victoria Beckham most definitely holds the top spot (Is that a yawn I hear?). VB definitely has her airport style formula nailed, which, I note, rarely includes accessories such as a battered laptop bag and bulging carry-on case. She’s a walking advert for her own brand and, let’s be fair, if she can’t nab a few freebies from her collection, what is the point? It’s all about tailoring: trousers; t-shirts or silk shirts (polyester they ain’t); jacket; (all good so far) vertiginous stiletto heels (how and why?); and always huge dark sunglasses. It’s a great look and, whilst dressing headto-toe in brand Beckham would require me to re-mortgage my house, the good news is that it’s easy to copy, it can be tweaked to your own level of quirkiness and MARCH 2019
it’s practical – stiletto heels aside. As for the sunglasses indoors – definitely optional. Can anyone really pull off sunnies inside? I tried it once on the way home from Lanzarote (well, it was my holiday). Let’s just say, my ‘look’ was more transition varifocals wearer than Anna Wintour FROW Paris! The immaculate Olivia Palermo – every IG fashionista’s go-to gal – is also deserving of a mention. But honestly, some of the airport style advice attributed to her is truly in no way achievable for this mere mortal. Packing an additional outfit for the airport? That is ASW preparation to the max! I am stressed enough packing correctly for a two day business trip without worrying about my second airport outfit. The other celeb-favoured airport look is athleisure– and let me stress this is the ‘skinny cashmere’ type and not the baggy
‘slogan across the butt’ versions. I am with Olivia on this one, she’s not a fan either. Whilst I can appreciate the well intentioned ‘let it all be free’ comfort of the leisure pants (the name says it all), I am sorry to say that I have yet to see them worn well in the departure lounge. Sure, 5’10” A 40-something wannabe journalist model Kendall Jenner frequently and fashionista, Kirsten rocks the casual chic look, but a Curran is somewhere supermodel I am not! Last year on the scale between Victoria Beckham (same holiday as the sunglasses (ahem) and Bridget attempt) I even invested in (aka Jones (closer to reality). overspent) a pair of said yoga Working in the corporate business world, pants to try the look myself. but forever thinking, Utter bliss on the 2.15am coach living and observing trip from Galway to Dublin but, all things fashion and much to the hubster’s delight, style – the good, the bad and the ugly! by the time we got to departures the case had been opened and the baggy ass and knee look was gone, replaced by my standard VB copycat look. Maybe Olivia Palermo was right about that second outfit after all!

One of the best ways to greet a new season is to incorporate a fresh colour palette into your wardrobe. Unsurprisingly, pastel colours will be back with a vengeance for Spring 2019, but if you fancy taking a walk on the wild side with something a touch bolder, vibrant pops of neon are the shades to be working right now. No longer do fluorescent tones exclusively belong at raves and music festivals – they can have a firm place in our day to day wardrobes too! Genetics and behavioural influences are the two main factors which can influence the progression of myopia.
YOUR CHILD’S VISION IS PRECIOUS...
Your child’s eyesight is so precious. Visual problems can affect their abilities with schoolwork, sport and social development and daily activities.
O
ptometrists recommend that children should have their eyes examined from age two, or before, if there are signs of vision problems and/or family history of such. The key to managing problems is early detection. High quality eye care and professional advice enables children with vision problems to reach their highest visual potential. It’s important to look out for the following signs: • The eye turning in or out • Holding objects such as books and digital devices very close to the face • Frequent headaches or tired eyes • Difficulty seeing the board at school or television • Excessive rubbing or blinking • Concentration and retention difficulties • Reduced attention span Focussing errors include myopia (short-sightedness), hypermetropia (long-sightedness) and astigmatism (where the eye shape is oval as opposed to being

spherical causing blurred vision and distortion of focus). Strabismus (where the eye has turned) is often the cause of a lazy or amblyopic eye. The latter must be detected and treated as early as possible as occlusion therapy (patching) may be required. The most important vision development years are from birth to eight years of age. There are now a multitude of contact lenses available for vision correction. Contact lenses are the first option for sports activities, however, there are now contact lenses available to help control myopia progression in children and young adults. Genetics and behavioural influences are the two main factors which can influence the progression of myopia. It is important that the patient takes adequate breaks from prolonged tasks such as reading and gaming on portable devices. A healthy balance is required between near-vision tasks and outdoor activities. Treating myopia early can slow its progression and reduce the potential of developing future eye health issues associated with higher levels of myopia. If you think your child might be short-sighted, ask your
optometrist about proven options to slow the progression of myopia in children. It is extremely important for vision development that frames fit well so that your child is looking through the centre of the lens and not over the top of the frame. Choose impact resistant lenses for safety and protection. Lenses can be thinned down to keep them light and attractive looking as children need to feel comfortable and confident with their glasses. Lenses with reflection-free surfaces provide clearer, more comfortable vision, especially when using devices such as smartphones, tablets, computers and interactive technology at school. Protect your child’s eyes from the dangerous rays of the sun as their developing eyes are much more vulnerable. High Index (thinner lenses) provide 100% UV protection and most are impact resistant. Optique Opticians stock high quality children’s sunglasses at affordable prices. They also accept children’s HSE optical forms and provide one pair of fashionable glasses (including standard single vision lenses) free of charge from a selected range.

I reckon it’s probably a bad sign when you need to use Google to find out what age you are. Styleuphoria.com
It’s my birthday this month and it turns out that I have spent the past year saying I am one year older than I actually am! I thought that only happened to ‘old’ people! Although the great thing about kids is they will tell you what you want to hear, or perhaps what you told them! When I ask Jack-Riley what age his mammy is, he tells everyone I am 21! Since you only turn 21 once, I think I’ll get myself a present of these gorgeous runners which have the perfect subtle amount of the leopard print trend.
VEGAMPLE Lead by example seems to be the theme of any toddler book I read. I’ve got to admit that I’m not a huge fan of vegetables on my own plate, but I always have them stacked high on the children’s plates. Now that Jack-Riley is getting older, he is noticing what I’m eating so I need to start loading the veggies on to my plate too! I spotted this portion plate in Next so that will hopefully force me to do just that!

they were children? It transports me right back to the 80’s! I didn’t think my children would know what to do with this since it doesn’t resemble a modern day iPhone, but this toy phone is going down a storm – they love it!
IT TAKES TWO! One of the most popular trends on the high street at the moment is coordinated two piece outfits. Personally, I love this look and I like that you can get value for money by mixing and matching with other pieces that you already have in your wardrobe. I have a Communion coming up this month so I am going to get this two piece tweed outfit. With my small height, it can be hard to get trousers to fit straight from the hanger, so I tend to love shorts instead! For Sián I got this floral print dress as it also has a soft hint of blue going through it so that we can coordinate! And for Jack-Riley, we are going retro trend with this totally adorable denim jacket.

Never one to miss a clothing opportunity, there’s a whole new world open to me with St. Patrick’s Day themed shopping for the family. ALANAGH CLEGG Four Threads Created by Alanagh Clegg during her graduate year in NCAD, Four Threads is inspired by a family business of handcrafting that has been passed down through generations. By exploring the traditions of these techniques, her work is carefully developed into a considered collection of garments, accessories and thoughtfully designed objects to transcend each season. The collection has been curated over time through a number of timeless garments which are made to be lived in and loved for a lifetime. New designs are gradually added with additions to fabric choices including special projects creating limited edition garments working with artisan makers in India.
AMIE EGAN
HELEN HAYES
Based in Tullamore, Co. Offaly, Amie featured in the Ones to Watch category last year. Her SS19 collection was developed as a meditative project, reflecting on the over saturation of imagery and news, the over stimulation and over consumption present in our busy daily routine. Using a neutral palette, Amie’s garments combine the calmness of linens and raw silks with military references and utilitarian details. Waterproof coated linens and large cargo pockets remind us, in these uncertain times, to always be resourceful, always prepared, always be ready. Her ideas are based on developing a narrative around a character who adapts to extreme environments and weather conditions by using coated waterproof textiles as well as silks and linens.
Helen studied Graphic Design at LSAD. It was only after her daughter started primary school that she began studying Fashion Design at the Grafton Academy. After graduating in December 2015, Helen interned with Tissue and launched her own label in June 2016. She has a keen interest in couture finishes and traditional handcrafted techniques as she strives to combine them to create garments that have a tactile quality. Helen has focused on silk organza in her new collection as it can be manipulated in so many ways. It focuses on daywear and is mainly made up of separates. The collection has evolved into an exploration of pattern and how through colour and scale the overall effect can change dramatically.
KATIE ANN MCGUIGAN
ANNE MCCONNELL
A native of Newry, Co. Down, Katie is based in North West London. Her S/S 19 collection celebrates the unity of sports culture, drawing inspiration from old black and white photographs featuring crowds of sports fans. Altering the conventional backs of football shirts, Katie replaces the team names and numbers with her signature use of repeat prints. Continuing her signature experimentation of balance and volume, vinyl printed leather biker jackets are paired with lightweight peach and cobalt blue dresses. Ruffles, pleats and leather heeled ankle boots add a feminine touch to the collection, breaking down the outdated stereotype of masculinity in sport.
McConnell Woolen Mills Ltd. Located on the shores of Lough Derg in Killaloe, Co. Clare, Anne graduated from LSAD with a degree in Fashion Design specialising in knitwear. Following her tenure at companies including Carraig Donn and Ireland’s Eye Knitwear, Anne established Áine Knitwear. McConnell, her flagship brand, is a study of Irish heritage in form combining a unique ability to fuse current culture, past history and colours, transforming them into ready-to-wear, premium knitwear fashion garments drawing inspiration from the beautiful nature of her native Wild Atlantic roots.

After working in the design for print arena for many years, she decided to follow a more creative route and returned to college to study Fine Art. After graduating, Claire spent time in Berlin and Venice working as an assistant to various artists in the Venice Biennale. During this time she developed her art studio practice and began developing her brand of wearable art. Her painting approach fuses bold and vibrant colours with contrasting stripes, pattern, collage and energetic mark making. Clare uses multiple layers and juxtaposed shapes to create a unique, unpredictable and eclectic experience for the viewer. She likes to work through various mediums with particular emphasis on painting and printmaking, and has recently started working with resin. Her unique artworks translate beautifully onto fabric, with the result culminating in beautiful bespoke scarves.

RITA WHITE Drawing inspiration from nature and the world around her, the Galway-based designer has a love for birds and butterflies that then become characters with their own style. With a background in nursing and psychology, and a passion for drawing and art, Rita completed a degree in Art and Design in 2012. Currently working on a set of hand drawings about horses, Rita hopes to follow up with an equestrian range. Working with a design process using original hand drawings to create a unique and special style, Rita then draws them up digitally while retaining the style and the original story of the drawing. The design is then printed onto silk to create silk scarves. Rita loves the luxurious feel and shimmer of colour in silk. The fact that it’s a sustainable natural fibre adds to its appeal for her as she needed a precious fabric that could reflect the colours that she wanted.
NICOLE JACKSON QBU combines innovative and customisable designs with ethical materials and manufacture with a powerful geometric aesthetic. The brand was launched in March 2017 by Nicole Jackson, a fashion graduate from Limerick School of Art and Design in her native Galway. At the forefront of weight loss for almost 60 years, the WW coaches, originally members themselves, bring a wealth of experience and expertise with them. Having successfully followed the WW plan, they can empathise with their members and the challenges that losing weight and maintaining healthier habits for life brings. WW will always be a weight loss global leader. With a shift towards wellness, WW now offers a new membership welcoming anyone who wants to build healthy habits without a weight loss focus. That can mean eating better, moving more or developing a more positive mindset. The support and guidance from WW coaches and other workshop members is key to success for everyone, whether it’s wellness with or without a weight loss focus. Marie, a WW coach for the past 22 years, joined when her chil-

It is so important as WW coaches that we are knowledgeable experts on the current WW programme – Freestyle, which comes from our ongoing training workshops – and that we can empathise with our members as we too have walked the walk and talked the talk. From a personal point of view, it is fantastic as it’s a job that can be tailored around our personal needs, such as family life, with part time or full time work options available. With guidance and support from your very own wellness coach, you’ll get team support from likeminded members which enables you to share, laugh and learn. The WW coaches are very much a team who regularly meet for coffee to catch up and maintain the great friendships they have developed over the years. CULTURE SHOCK
This month sees my eldest child turn 18 and I’m feeling relief and dismay in equal measure. I mean HOORAY, we made it, she’s not a psychopath, pothead or pregnant, so well done me! But equally, this now means I’m old enough to have an adult child, which surely can’t be right – can it? So, to mark the occasion, I’ve decided to write her a letter.
D
earest Emily, Congratulations, you’re finally an adult! You’ve waited for this day your whole life, even as a toddler you were always going on 35. You’ve lead an unconventional life until now – 11 schools in four different countries on three different continents. You’ve risen to the challenge with every move and thrived and excelled in each new environment. When we returned to Ireland two years ago you took to Galway life as if you’d never left, you made it look so easy. The day you were born was the best and worst of my life; nothing could have prepared me for the tsunami of pain which ripped through me, wave after agonising wave of contractions which seemed to go on for hours. Actually they did go on for hours, 16 to be precise. Sixteen hours of terror, blood and tears, but then suddenly it was over – like the calm following the storm – and there you were, staring placidly up at me with those enormous blue eyes. It was love at first sight. You changed my life that day. So what advice can I offer? I won’t waste my time with platitudes like ‘love yourself ’ or ‘follow your dreams’, you know this stuff already, what I’m offering is some solid and practical tips I’ve learned along the way. First off, save one third of your earnings. I can already see you

rolling your eyes at this one. I know, there’s concert tickets and cute Penneys tops to buy, but seriously I wish someone had impressed this on me at your age. You never know what disaster or opportunity may lurk around the corner and they will be a whole lot easier to handle if you’ve some money put aside. Secondly, pick one thing to do and master it. I know you’re struggling to decide which path to follow at present. You have so many gifts; you’re musical, you write beautifully, you’ve brains to burn and you can turn your hand to anything, but please, just pick something and stick with it. Agonising over choices is a thief of time – some people lose decades trying to figure it out. Once you’ve made a choice your journey can begin, and who knows where it might bring you? Remember the three drink rule: when considering a third
drink have a plan – a lift home and a good friend with you – because if you stray beyond the second drink and onto the third, all is likely lost for the night, reason has now beat a hasty retreat, and the party is on. Question everything, even if it makes you unpopular, especially if it makes you unpopular. Don’t cut your own fringe – ever. Yes I realise it’s tempting, but trust me, you’ll have to live with the results for at least three months. Yes, Taylor Swift can rock a fringe but remember, everyone else looks like Dave Hill from Slade. This rule doubly applies if you’ve just had your third drink. Trust me I’ve been there more than once. Travel as much as you can, I don’t think I need to explain why. Marry a man you can shave your legs in front of. Keeping everything a mystery might be fun in the first few months together, but nobody wants mysteries popping out of the closet 20 years into the marriage, I’ve seen this first hand. Know who you’re dealing with and afford them the same courtesy, it makes for a happier experience in the long run. My final piece of advice to you is simple, and yet so many people don’t get it. Be kind, Emily. Always be kind. And surround yourself with kind people where possible, it will make the journey easier. Happy birthday sweetheart, Mum xx MARCH 2019

CONTROL and even reverse DIABETES Over 200,000 people in Ireland suffer from type 2 diabetes and are dependant on medication to manage it.
D
r Eva Orsmond is extremely passionate about empowering sufferers to take control of their health and has successfully helped her patients to reverse their type 2 diabetes through diet, supplements and hard work. In her latest book, she shares her complete diet plan for reversing the disease. Including over 60 recipes, the book also provides lots of information to help you to adjust your diet and take control of your blood glucose levels. By following Dr Eva’s four phase diet plan you will remove fat from your pancreas, potentially allowing you to come off diabetes medication and move into maintenance for life. Based on the latest medical research, and using case studies from Dr Eva’s own practice, the book is a must-read for anyone suffering from the disease.
that it has only one third of the carbohydrates and four times more protein than a serving of regular porridge oats. As you only need a bowl, a spoon and boiled water, it’s ideal for those mornings on the go or even when travelling. Many people mistakenly think of rhubarb as a fruit, but it’s actually a brilliant vegetable to use during the diet. Rhubarb is an ideal way to add more vegetable fibre to your breakfast and you can have the leftovers as a ‘free’ snack any time of the day, as this makes more than you’ll need for one serving of porridge.
PORRIDGE WITH STEWED RHUBARB
Place the chopped rhubarb in a saucepan. Add just enough water to cover. Bring it to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes without a lid to allow the excess water to evaporate. Remove from the heat and sweeten to taste with xylitol and a pinch of cinnamon (if using). Empty the sachets of porridge and Laktolight into a cereal bowl. Mix well and gradually stir in 100ml of boiling water from the kettle. Serve warm with some stewed rhubarb and/or a sprinkle of ground cinnamon.
1 Eurodiet porridge sachet 1 Laktolight sachet FOR THE STEWED RHUBARB: 1 bunch of rhubarb, chopped (usually about 5 stalks, sizes vary throughout season) xylitol, to taste pinch of ground cinnamon (optional)
PHASE 1 ONWARDS | SERVES 1 This porridge has some oat flakes in it, so the consistency is very similar to regular porridge cooked in milk. Most people find it sweet enough without toppings such as fruit and honey, but you can add stewed rhubarb for more bulk. The reason why this porridge works on the diet is MARCH 2019
Reverse Your Diabetes – The Revolutionary Diet Plan for Taking Control of Type 2 Diabetes is published by Gill Books, €19.99 Dr Eva’s diet plan is to be used under medical supervision.
JAMBALAYA PHASE 2 ONWARDS | SERVES 2 Chorizo sausage has an amazing flavour and it is well worth paying a little extra for good quality. It has a lot of calories, though, so use it sparingly. There are as many variations of this Louisiana dish as there are people who love it, so feel free to vary the contents to suit your taste buds. You could swap the prawns and chorizo for pork sausage and chicken, for example. Once you have finished with the initial phases of the diet, you can swap the spring onions for regular onions and try some brown rice instead of the konjac rice.
1 tsp butter 60g dry cured chorizo, peeled if necessary and cut into small cubes 1 green pepper, finely chopped 1 yellow pepper, finely chopped 1 bunch of spring onions, chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 400g tin of cherry tomatoes 1 tbsp Biona hot pepper sauce or Tabasco sauce 1 tsp ground turmeric pinch of Cajun seasoning (optional) 150g cooked king prawns 1 bag of Eurodiet konjac rice, rinsed well 1 fresh red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped (optional) fresh coriander or parsley, to garnish (optional) lime wedges, to serve Melt the butter in a non-stick frying pan, then add the chorizo pieces and fry until they are a little crispy. FOOD peppers, spring onions and garlic and fry for a further 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Pour in the tinned cherry tomatoes and add the hot pepper sauce and turmeric. Check for seasoning, adding more hot pepper sauce or a pinch of Cajun seasoning (if using). Add the cooked prawns and the rinsed konjac rice and heat through. Garnish with the chilli and fresh coriander or parsley (if using) and serve hot with lime wedges on the side for squeezing over.
CHICKEN FAJITAS PHASE 3 ONWARDS | SERVES 4 Most supermarkets now stock a variety of wraps, but many of them are made from white flour. Check the ingredients and choose one with only wholemeal wheat flour. This simple yoghurt-based take on the more traditional sour cream gives you all the flavour with half the calories, but not with any more sugar.
200g natural Greek yoghurt 1 garlic clove, crushed 1 tsp Herbamare salt 2 tsp butter 4 chicken fillets, cut in half lengthways 2 peppers, sliced lengthways 1 onion, sliced (or 1 bunch of spring onions, chopped) 4 big wholemeal wraps, or 8 small wraps 200g ready-made fresh salsa 200g strong Cheddar cheese, grated 1 bag of washed iceberg lettuce, shredded dash of sugar-free soy sauce guacamole (optional) finely chopped fresh coriander (optional) lime wedges, to serve Mix the yoghurt with the crushed garlic and Herbamare salt. Cover and set aside in the fridge until ready to use. Melt one teaspoon of the butter in a non-stick pan. Add the chicken and fry until cooked through, then remove from the pan. Cook the peppers and onion in the same pan until crisp. Keep warm. Heat the remaining teaspoon of butter in a chargrill pan. Press the cooked chicken fillets on it to give them charred lines on both sides. Add the tortilla wraps to the hot chargrill pan for a few seconds just to warm them up, taking care not to burn them. Assemble the cooked chicken and vegetables in the middle of the wraps. Add the yoghurt dip, salsa, grated cheese, lettuce and soy sauce. Spoon in some guacamole and sprinkle with chopped fresh coriander (if using). Tightly roll up each wrap to close. Serve with a large side dish of vegetables or salad and lime wedges. MARCH 2019
RICE PUDDING PHASE 1 ONWARDS | SERVES 1 This quick breakfast will keep you full for a long time. You can also have it as a protein source during Phase I after a dinner of vegetables, such as a stir fry, as it contains the same amount of protein as five large eggs. The vanilla dessert has a lovely custard-like flavour, so many people find it very comforting. A similar dessert of rice and vanilla custard in the supermarket comes with approximately 25g of sugar, which is likely to turn into body fat although the product itself is labelled low fat – a good example of why consumers need to be wary of misleading food labelling. This is also a great dessert after a dinner of vegetables.
1 Eurodiet konjac rice sachet 1 Laktolight sachet 1 Eurodiet vanilla dessert sachet pinch of ground cinnamon (optional) cinnamon stick, to decorate (optional) Empty the contents of the rice sachet into a colander and rinse well under cold running water. Set aside to drain. Measure 100ml of water into your shaker. Add the Laktolight sachet, close the lid and shake well. Add the vanilla dessert sachet and close the lid. Shake well again to combine. Place the rice in a microwave-proof cereal bowl. Pour in the vanilla dessert mixture and mix well. Microwave at 900W for 1 minute. Add ground cinnamon to taste and decorate with a cinnamon stick (if using).

oday, in our fast-paced information age, the motivation towards selfimprovement is strong. Yoga has become mainstream. Veganism is the world’s fastest growing food trend. Whilst our social media channels are jampacked with techniques to access greater inner peace, with tools to create wealth and life hacks for better health, there has never been a time with more media focus on how to become your best self. When caught in the cut and thrust of daily life juggling work, family and finances, thoughts of self-improvement can easily get squeezed out, which can leave one feeling stuck in a rut. If this feels familiar, remember that improving your life doesn’t necessarily require a complete overhaul. Instead, it is something that we can work on – change is gradual. Many people mistakenly seek out that one secret, trick or hack that will make everything better right now. But life is not like that and the quest for overnight success is often a trap. There simply is no magic bullet. Realistically it comes down to the small choices you make each day – your daily habits. Observe

your habits, identify small improvements and hone them little by little. Small steps, repeated. Over time, these positive increments bring about measurable results. The Japanese coined the word Kaizen, which is widely adopted in the industry to boost efficiency. Kai meaning change and Zen meaning good. This ‘change for good’ approach focuses on consistent daily improvements and involves modifying expectations and modestly aiming for an improvement of 1% each day. Allowing ourselves this leeway means we are less likely to fail and more likely to celebrate our small wins which results in an increased likelihood of creating sustainable change. Developing healthy habits around food can be a particularly good place to start. Sound nutrition is a primer for success in other areas such as wellbeing scores, mental performance and physical health. So, whether you would like to boost self-confidence, build resilience, communicate more effectively, connect more deeply or simply become a healthier person, focussing on these three simple daily habits can lead you there, one step at a time.

THE 4 HOUR FUEL RULE My first recommendation is not to do with what you eat, but how you eat. To maintain high energy levels and avoid crashes, the aim is to eat regularly and avoid going for long periods of time without eating or skipping meals. It’s also important to recognise the symptoms of feeling tired and avoiding the mid-afternoon slump where you need a cuppa to get you through the afternoon. Our body takes about four hours to process a meal, so if we go too long without eating, we will run out of fuel. Get off to a good start and aim to eat breakfast within one hour of getting up and then a meal or a healthy snack every four hours or so after that. So if you have breakfast at 7am, you need to be eating a healthy snack by 11am. If you have lunch at 12.30pm, you should not be waiting until you get home at 6.30pm to eat next. Instead, fit in a healthy afternoon snack by 4.30pm. That should help to keep you going in the afternoon and avoid the hangry snacks. Try to identify where your biggest gap is and whether you need to be spreading your food out better during the day to keep you going. This will have a positive impact on your mood, energy and hormone balance allowing you to focus on bigger picture goals.
EAT A WELL BALANCED PLATE Even if we are eating the right foods, it’s also important to eat them in the right proportions to get the most from them. The MARCH 2019
HEALTH
World Health Organisation recommends that we eat at least five portions of vegetables a day – that’s around 400g. Most of the Irish adult population eat approximately 200g. If you are in the habit of loading your plate up with carbohydrates like pasta, potatoes and rice, perhaps this is good place to start. Build the habit of filling half your plate with vegetables, ideally one quarter greens and one quarter coloured vegetables. Remember, potatoes don’t count as a vegetable because of their negative impact on blood sugar. Then add one quarter of lean protein, which is needed for repair and to build muscles. Protein is a powerhouse that literally helps to keep us feeling fuller for longer. Lastly, the final quarter of a well balanced plate should contain a slow releasing carbohydrate. Think wholegrains – brown rice, wholegrain pasta, proper brown bread and sweet potatoes, even a garden spud in its jacket. This is a well balanced plate.
BE TOTALLY PRESENT Remaining present in the now means we are more likely to stay on track and less likely to make unhealthy food choices. If introducing meditation seems like a stretch, mindfulness may be more accessible and realistic to achieve. Rooted in Buddhism, it is the simple practice of being purposefully focussed on the present moment, without judgement. Practicing mindfulness has been scientifically shown to enhance many attitudes that contribute to an overall greater sense of satisfaction in life. In short, being mindful makes it easier to enjoy the moment as it happens. Through focussing on the now, those who practice it regularly find they become less preoccupied and more present. Thus, they are less likely to worry about the future or ruminate over past regrets. Scientists have also found that mindfulness techniques can boost physical health in a myriad of ways. It has been shown to help relieve stress, treat heart disease, lower blood pressure, reduce chronic pain, support sleep, and alleviate gastrointestinal difficulties. The beauty of mindfulness is that it requires zero equipment and you can practice it at any time. For a free 30 day taster, check out the Headspace app. MARCH 2019

Bee Green is the first professional garment cleaners in Ireland to offer a revolutionary, safe and environmentally-friendly option for cleaning clothes.
GREEN IS THE NEW BLACK
B
ee Green is the first professional garment cleaners in Ireland to offer a revolutionary, safe and environmentally friendly option for cleaning all dry-cleanable clothes. With completely non-toxic cleaning methods, Bee Green ensures that your clothes are safely and thoroughly cleaned with products that are fully biodegradable and, best of all, you can avail of this totally green service at no extra expense. Bee Green was born from Rita and Stephen Langan’s passion for providing a 100% eco-friendly and safe service for their customers. After travelling far and wide and eventually training in and purchasing the Concord Textiles system, Bee Green set up the first, and still the only, 100% green dry cleaners in Ireland. Since then the business has become a franchise with six shops – two in Galway and four in Mayo – offering toxin-free, eco-friendly services. While Bee Green wanted to offer a totally green service with all the obvious advantages of no

impact on the environment, on staff, or on their customers, they also wanted to make sure it did the cleaning job to a high standard. It’s safe to say they have excelled on all counts. Traditional dry cleaners leave a residual smell from the toxic chemical perchlorethylene (known as perc), which is inclined to dull colours and stiffen fabrics. Despite its name, dry cleaning is not a dry process as clothes are soaked in perchlorethylene. That’s where the smell comes from. The Bee Green wet cleaning system, based on water, soaps and very specialised equipment, does the exact opposite as it leaves garments smelling clean, feeling soft and holding their true colour. Their system can also clean fabrics with fire retardant, beading, faux leather, leather trim etc. with ease. Bee Green has no issue with hazardous waste like traditional cleaners, and that is very impor-
tant to them. The use of perc is banned in Denmark and France, and in more than 20 states in America. The World Health Organisation has deemed perc as probably carcinogenic to humans. This was based on studies of people who worked in the industry and those who lived close to commercial dry cleaning units. Since the ban in France, Concord Textiles have sold several systems there, with Bee Green becoming the go-to place for visits and training. A traditional dry cleaning facility cannot be operational near food outlets or residential areas because of the damage perc can do to the environment, and our health. For this reason, more and more dry cleaners across Europe have made their way to the west of Ireland to learn more about the Concord Textile system used by Bee Green. All garments labelled ‘dry clean only’ can be effectively cleaned using the wet cleaning system so whether you have cashmere or cotton, Angora or Armani, you can trust Bee Green to bring out the very best in your fine clothes. Bee Green has six branches located in Briarhill Shopping Centre, Galway; Malt Lane, Shop Street, Galway; Altamount Street, Westport; Knockthomas, Castlebar and American Street, Belmullet.

A
n aesthetic marked by minimalism and functionality, Scandinavian design has been influential since its inception in the early 20th century. With design ideas still coming into the mainstream from the Nordic region to this day, it is timeless in its relevance and appeal. For inspiration on how to create a classic dining space with elegance and ease, the design experts at Nordic Mood share their notes for a timeless approach to style and design. First originating from the atmospheric and vast lands of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland — collectively known as Scandinavia — in the 1950s, Nordic design arose from a collective need for simple and practical, yet skillfully crafted and high-quality, pieces of furniture that were also affordable to everyone regardless of wealth or class. Nowadays, the popularity of Scandinavian furniture is steadfast and its influence appears in homes across the far reaches of the globe. And it’s easy to see why. The preference for pure simplicity, clean lines, and natural materials culminates in a charmingly unique and pared-back style. More than just stark minimalism and bottomline utilitarianism, however, Nordic style also prioritises warmth and cosiness — all the while retaining a subtle elegance. It has just the right balance of beauty and functionality that anyone can be inspired by and use to make their house a home. Trends are transient by their very nature, but the minimal palette, simple shapes, and fluid contours of Scandinavian style have proven themselves to be eternally stylish. Steep mountainsides — snowcapped even in summer — dramatic rock faces, mossy hills, lush green farmlands and magnificent, deep emerald green fjords. The beauty of Scandinavia is unparalleled. Against this otherworldly backdrop, the Scandinavian people have adopted a happily congenial and refreshingly traditional way of life. In particular, the Sognefjord — Norway’s largest and deepest fjord — has a special place in our hearts. Aptly nicknamed ‘King of the Fjords’, it’s one of the most beautiful attractions not just in Norway, but the entire natural world.

furniture either. Ceiling beams, floors, walls, and maybe even the ceilings themselves are commonly comprised of this versatile natural material. The result? Scandinavian interior design creates a warm, cosy yet contemporary feel that’s hard to replicate with any other design style. SIMPLICITY Scandinavian home decor prioritises quality over quantity. Championing an admirable minimalist philosophy, Scandi furniture dispenses with all excess. You’ll never see any ornate detail, over the top clutter, or unessarcary extra frills in a true to style Nordic home. Scandinavian style furniture will almost always showcase sleek and clean silhouettes, minimal colour palettes, and honest, straightforward design. COLOUR The less-is-more philosophy applies equally to the use of colour in Scandinavian interior design. You’ll find furniture and homes often come with a neutral colour palette. Various shades of muted grey, blue, beige, black, and, of course, white, are used to create rooms that are airy, soothing and uplifting. That’s not to say there’s no lighter pastel hues or even bold primary colours allowed. If you’re feeling adventurous, scatter a few geometric print cushions or drape a brightly coloured throw on your Scandinavian sofa, for example. The key is to strictly limit your colour pallette and keep your bolder splashes of colour to a minimum. A little colour goes a long way in achieving a cheery, upbeat vibe.
It’s the stunning natural beauty of the Sognefjord – along with the soft colour palette of the surrounding landscape and the alluring simplicity of the Nordic lifestyle – from which we take inspiration for our Scandinavian furniture collections. With Scandinavian-inspired furniture, lighting and accessories, you can transform your home into a soothing Nordic-inspired retreat away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. The designs comprise striking, minimalist and modern shapes which emphasise aesthetics and functionality. THE CORE PRINCIPLES OF NORDIC STYLE When it comes to designing your very own Scandinavian-inspired home, it helps to become familiar with the main elements of Scandinavian style. Knowledge is power; and the more you understand about why this style works so well, the better you can incorporate it into your own home. Here are a few key elements that give Nordic furniture its timeless appeal. AU NATUREL Natural wood takes center stage in Nordic furniture. You can typically expect to find pieces made from warm toned woods like oak and teak. In some cases, colder types of wood are used, but they’re usually lightly stained to warm them up a bit. The featuring of wood doesn’t just stop at

TEXTURE The unrestrained use of texture is crucial in Nordic-inspired design where earthy, rustic, and organic materials reign supreme. There are numerous ways you can incorporate texture through Scandinavian furniture. Consider a curved rattan Scandinavian chair draped with a soft throw, Lloyd Loom weave nesting side tables, or something as simple as cable knit cushions adorning your cosy Scandinavian sofa. The goal is to balance out the minimal aesthetic you’ve already created with smooth, clean lines and surfaces. You want to add layers of rich texture to create a warm, tactile and inviting home that feels just as good as it looks. MARCH 2019

Garden inspiration for Galway’s green fingers I already know what my present is going to be this Mother’s Day – light. A whole glorious extra hour of it. lthough the clocks won’t be going forward until the very last day of the month, it’s still a month of lighter days, of longer mornings and later evenings, the month when spring really begins. If I was anything in a former life, it must have been a plant, because I seem to respond to light the same way plants do. Most of them need light to grow and thrive, and if they don’t get it, they struggle. I’m kind of struggling myself by the end of a winter in the northern hemisphere. I sometimes wonder what persuaded humans to come and live in this part of the world at all! It’s undoubtedly beautiful from a scenic point of view, but that surely can’t MARCH 2019

have counted for much when you had to hunt and gather for days at a time to put food on the table, or the floor of the cave, or whatever they used. I suppose as the human race began getting bigger, they had to seek out new territory, expand, grow and find more space. Or maybe they just didn’t get along with their neighbours. Outside, in the garden, there’s plenty of growing and expanding going on this month. Nobody’s fighting with their neighbours just yet – that will come later in the year, as some vigorous individuals get too big for their boots – but already new territory is being sought, and won, by the weeds. In this garden, a quick ‘shock and awe’ attack at the start of the growing season usually works and
keeps them under control, mostly anyway. By the time we get to summer, every bed and border is jam-packed (I don’t really do minimal, in the wardrobe or in the garden) and there’s very little room for them to colonise. It’s too early for much green, although the crowns of the perennials are forming mounds of fresh green foliage. Leaves won’t appear on the trees for a while yet, but the star magnolia is covered in pearly white blooms, daisy shaped and fragrant. Scents are pumping out from the hyacinths too, and if you’re not lucky enough to have these in the garden, see if you can find them in your local florist – any Mum would love a bunch of these on Mother’s Day. And yes, boys, that is a hint.

y day usually starts at around 7.30am, depending how many times the snooze button gets pressed! Mornings are always a rush. No matter how early I go to bed, or how early I get up, there’s just never enough time! I know loads of parents feel the same. I wake up my son Cooper, who is five, get myself ready for the day, then him. It’s then time to feed everyone, including our beloved dog Indiana Jones, get lunch ready and run out the door for the walk to school. My office is only 10 minutes away so the dog comes to work too! He’s a golden retriever and is very well behaved, we all love having him there. Our work is split between our time in the office in Dun Laoghaire and when we’re away travelling for trade shows. Our trade shows are usually across the UK, Italy and the USA. My role on a daily basis is developing new ideas and products, helping the team with marketing and managing our growth as a company.
I try to eat healthy most of the time as I always feel better when I do. Breakfast and lunch are usually at my desk. I normally have Greek yogurt and berries, and lunch is usually some dinner from the night before. And loads of tea! We’re tea mad in the office. Dinner is nothing fancy, just traditional family favourites like spaghetti bolognese, pasta, roast dinners and slow cooker dinners for days I know I’m going to be busy and tired in the evening. My work is my hobby to be honest. I genuinely love it so much and it never feels like work. Yes, it can be stressful, but it’s my passion. If I’m not in work, I’m probably thinking about it – I’m always trying to find what’s next for Waxperts. I enjoy chilling out at home with my husband and son. I just love when the fire is on and we’re watching a movie. I go swimming a few times a week – I find it’s a great way to unwind. We also try to get to Achill Island as often as we can during the year. That’s where I really switch off and relax. We love it there.
