hile lovers were having Valentine’s Day dinner, members of SF State’s Anime FX club held a maid and butler themed cafe in Jack Adams Hall.

According to one of the club’s officers, freshman Meri Hambalek, the club wanted to take advantage of the

holiday that coincided with their open house.

“It’s Valentine’s Day, so why not have a maid cafe for people that have nothing to do that day?” she said.

During the four-hour event, there were several men and women dressed as anime style butlers and maids greeting club members. A maid and a butler

stood by the guests’ tables, while about 80 attendees were treated to food and several dance performances.

Hambalek gave two performances at the beginning of the event and introduced the performances from the guests of honor: Ti@mi, a dance duo, see STUDENTS on page 6

TRENGTH AND STEADFASTNESS ARE the reasons SF State students chose the alligator as their mascot in 1931 and there is no reason to change that. However, school officials have recently contemplated the change to forge a new image for the school and to bolster the image of student athletes.

But what could be more formidable than an alligator?

They kill and eat in a single bite. They use the muscle in their tail to initiate a “death roll,” spinning and convulsing their prey until bite-sized chunks are torn away. Even the way they swim, slowly lurching through water with only eyes popping above the surface, is menacing and mythical fodder for any scary story.

Nevermind that the alligator is fierce and deadly in a quiet creepy way, changing a mascot is not going to change morale. How many people actually care about the creature selected to represent their school?

The first thought when a basketball player enters the court isn’t “alright, gotta show that I’m as tough as an alligator.”

an official mascot but the image that commonly represents them is a redwood tree. A tree. An awesome and beautiful tree, but still a tree. If Stanford, who has done incredibly well in football with 25 of their athletes winning medals in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, is represented by a tree, then SF State can do just fine represented by a vicious alligator.

And what will happen to all the merchandise already stamped with “gator” or the image of an alligator? All these products would be left to waste — a move definitely against SF State’s pragmatic conserve and reuse credo.

You are what you make yourself to be. Many students at SF State know this aphorism well as they are struggling to work and earn a degree that presumably will improve their lot in life.

A Frank doesn’t change his name to Xavier to create a new self and likewise, SF State officials should relax and not change the mascot as if that is the only solution. Real change doesn’t come from the name or the label. Our athletes are relentlessly working to improve themselves. If they excel more than they ever have, do we change the mascot to tigers? If they fail miserably, do we change it to sloths?

Say we did change it. What would it be? These days, the city is changing dramatically. If officials changed the mascot based on the whims of a mercurial demographic base, what use is that? A change would then be needed in another five years.

It seems that administrative figures, lacking much of a real job to do, are seeking something to fill a void.

When it comes down to it, school officials should take a simple survey from students and get their opinion on the matter. Honestly, it’s our say that should be the final call since students are the ones who best represent the university.

XXII Winter Olympics: Opposing views on politics in sports

Spirit of the games is to celebrate athletic talent

Political controversy takes centerstage year after year Gay rights activists beaten and detained are the highlights circulating this year’s sporting events.

Athletes train for years to qualify for the Olympics and now they have to compete with politics during the games.

E

very four years, representatives from 88 nations gather in one location somewhere in the world to perform the art of athleticism. The Olympics are an event to shower athletes with medals that they have trained intensely to win.

The 2014 Winter Olympics have been the total opposite of this.

Host nation Russia and the city of Sochi have become a political arena for the entire world, but this shouldn’t be the case.

We should be celebrating the athletic talent that we have the privilege of watching from our television set.

With problems varying from the shooting of stray dogs to the LGBT controversy to the missing fifth Olympic ring during the opening ceremony, political drama has taken center stage. A hashtag was even made on Twitter called “#SochiProblems.”

This is all nonsense.

The media is turning Russia into a place no one ever wants to visit again. Athletes did not travel from all around the world just to be at the center of these problems.

Not only are they distractions for the athletes that could affect their performances but they are also taking away from the tradition of the games for the viewers.

Most athletes participate in the games to enjoy themselves because it is a place to have fun and do what they love.

They are just happy to be there and to have made it to a stage that is universal.

According to CNN’s “Sochi 2014: Russia’s Numbers Game,” the price tag on the XXII Winter Olympic Games is approximately $50 billion when the original targeted budget was a mere $12 billion.

Having spent most of this money on infrastructure to meet the hosting needs for thousands of visitors, this year’s event marks the most expensive in all Olympic history.

And what do we all do?

Focus on the controversy manifesting in the country that has invested billions to make the best event it possibly can.

The Olympic Games allow for countries of all different histories from around the world to come together and unite. Although for competition, we are all there. We put aside our differences for two weeks and just enjoy the pleasure of being a part of a world event.

The geography of Russia is beautiful, despite negative political undertones from the U.S. There are countless views of mountains, large stretches of plains and numerous lakes and rivers. While the U.S. Government is constantly trying to give Russia an atrocious reputation, in reality the location is perfect for winter sports.

As the U.S. team competes for gold, the level of patriotism increases. We see it in commercials, clothing, social networks and local pubs; all of which encourage people to watch and support the Sochi Games.

This is how it should be.

Going to Russia and competing for a gold medal is a once-in-alifetime opportunity.

As an audience, we need to embrace the accomplishments athletes are achieving.

The Winter Olympics began in 1924 just after World War I and the tradition has continued for 90 years. It is a part of our culture that we need to embrace and not use as an arena for politics.

The XXII Winter Olympics has been anything but fun.

Be proud of your country and embrace the talent that makes up the Olympic Games.

he Olympics have been and always will be a platform for political ideologies. With the Olympics in full swing, it would take a blind mole to miss the obvious: the games are more than just a stage for countries to show off their best athletes, they have become the main stage to tout political and social ideologies.

Last year Russian President Vladimir Putin passed a law banning all “gay propaganda” to minors, which highlights the injustices that continue to plague this planet.

The law bans the promotion of non-traditional sexual relations.

Even insisting that traditional and non-traditional sexual relations are equal can get you thrown in jail.

The role of politics in the Olympics is no new trend. Dating back to the 1936 Berlin Olympics, several record-breaking Jewish athletes were banned from participating in events due to their religious beliefs.

Then in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, gold medalist Tommie Smith and bronze medalist John Carlos raised their fists in support of the black power movement. Not only were they vilified by media, they were removed from the Olympic team and even received death threats.

It was the 1980 Olympics in Moscow that solidified the event as a political platform rather than a sporting event. When the United States and 64 other countries boycotted the Russian Olympics due to its occupation of Afghanistan, they showed that the power of politics outweighs the spirit of the games.

History has a way of serendipitously repeating itself, time and time again.

Unlike the Moscow Olympics, President Obama did not boycott the 2014 Games but personally decided not to attend. He instead sent openly gay tennis player Billie Jean King, figure skater Brian Boitano and ice hockey player Caitlin Cahow.

This passive aggressive move showed nothing but cowardice in addressing the civil rights injustices.

At this year’s games, protesters have been beaten and arrested for attempting to show pride in their sexual orientation.

One man was even tackled by security personnel for waving a rainbow flag during the Olympic torch relay and last week a gay rights activist said she was detained for wearing a rainbow scarf that read “Gay is OK.” While protests at the XXII Winter Olympics have been minimal, even from the athletes, it doesn’t derail from the fact that the national event brings up current controversial topics that are looming throughout the nation.

However, as time progresses so do the political ideas that have caused such uproar in the past.

Soon issues surrounding sexual orientation will be something we look back on as ancient history, and another issue will arise that is showcased at the Olympics, continuing the history that the event is more about politics than sports.

If this idea is not palpable, don’t participate in the political festival we call the Olympics.

Campus searches for definitive answer to Wong’s decision on Tasers

After an exclusive meeting last week President Wong told Xpress staff about his decision not to arm campus police with Tasers.

Since the decision, student groups involved with the issue have yet to feel satisfaction about the settlement and hope for a more concise answer. Once previously leaning towards the idea of arming campus police with Tasers, Wong came to the realization that if there were a need for more protection and safety on campus, then it wouldn’t be by implementing this tool.

“Right now the relationship between University Police and the campus is pretty good,” said Wong. “And if adding value by another tool causes a decline in the faith, simply because of this tool called Tasers, then is it worth it? It finally dawned on me that maybe it’s not.”

When more issues regarding campus safety surfaced during the meeting, Wong revealed a more detailed explanation behind his decision against Tasers. After a student approached Wong about the blue emergency lights on campus being broken, he knew that there are other things to fix first.

He remembered a compelling argument from a student that really stuck with him. The student said, ‘let’s get everything in order, that way you have a better sense in making a decision’.

“For an urban campus, I am absolutely

amazed how safe campus is until 2 or 3 in the morning. I hope we keep it that way,” said Wong. “If we were that safe until three in the morning, why deploy a tool you apparently don’t need?”

After ASI and Students Against Police Brutality finalized their revisions on a resolution against Tasers, a meeting with the Board of Directors was scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 12 to make the final decision of where ASI would stand on the then possible implementation of Tasers.

During the revision process, the groups went through much debate about the resolution to ensure it’s clarification for President Wong.

SAPB remain focused on the issue and don’t believe that the debate should be over yet. While expressing a discontent with the lack of transparency with President Wong’s decision, the group urges campus community to keep fighting for student safety and justice.

“This decision isn’t one for the president to make, it’s a community decision,” said SAPB member Celia LoBuono Gonzalez.

“He hasn’t made a clear commitment on where he even stands on the issue,” added another member, Michael Sanchez.

“We need to keep putting the pressure on and build unity among the campus community.”

Even though Wong’s decision was made privately before the meeting took place, he said he still took the resolution into great consideration.

“I hope the students, when they read

your article, know that their input was pretty significant,” Wong said during the meeting.

The decision against Tasers can still be changed if circumstances prove that deploying the tool among police officers will be beneficial, but as of now there will not be any Tasers on campus.

Wong mentioned the possibility of San Francisco reevaluating the idea of arming SFPD with Tasers.

The SFPD has been trying to arm its officers with Tasers for years now, but San Francisco Government has yet to

comply. The SF State University Police Department operates under a different jurisdiction and therefore has the option of arming its officers with Tasers, even if the tool is outlawed in San Francisco.

Wong says he is adamant about securing campus safety and will make any change necessary to assure that.

“If we reach a situation where someone is badly hurt and that a Taser would have been a better tool to use, then I’m going to put it back on the table,” Wong said. “I don’t like making the same mistake twice.”

Student groups fight for public transit discounts

Associated Students Inc. (ASI) is seeking to bring about an initiative that would allow for an SF State student discount pass on public transportation.

Members of ASI met with San Francisco Supervisor, Scott Wiener, who is a member of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) last Friday.

The MTC is a regional transit agency that overlooks the Clipper Card system, which would be critical for the implementation of the pass, according to Jared Giarrusso, SF State’s Associate Director of Community Relations.

“There needs to be effective activism by the students directed towards any of these political boards in order to get what we’ve been asking for years,” Giarrusso said.

ASI have already met with representatives from San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) and BART management to propose a joint universal pass for both agencies.

At a meeting in December, representatives from SFMTA and ASI reviewed the discount program that University of San Francisco already has with MUNI, which charges students $108 per

semester.

“We thought it would be a negotiation, but it became a brainstorming session,” said Miguel Guerrero, ASI College of Health and Social Science Representative.

MUNI seemed receptive to the idea, according to Guerrero, because of the existing Class

Pass system that SFMTA has had in place since 2000. Negotiations with BART require a different approach, namely because no such program currently exists, according to former ASI Board of Directors intern Hanikka Muna.

“Something getting implemented has never happened

with BART (at a university),” said Muna . “That’s what we’re struggling with. MUNI already has a model but all BART had were pilot programs from UC Berkeley and Stanford.”

At a meeting on January, BART representatives were concerned that a band-wagon effect could manifest when other

schools see SF State’s example as a precedence to get their own program, according to Muna, Previous referendums to get a transit pass at SF State have failed because they only included MUNI, according to University Corporation Executive Director Jason Porth.

“A universal fast-pass for only MUNI riders provides no value to a big chunk of our community,” Porth said.

While ASI has been involved in negotiating with transit officials, Students For Justice (SFJ), an SF State student group, has been leading the effort of getting students interested in a pass program.

“This will be a winnable issue, to get students empowered and involved on campus” Jon Chaney, a members of SFJ said.

For a pass program at SF State, SFMTA wanted a “100 percent student buy-in,” which would mean that every student would have to pay into it, according to Sonya Soltani, ASI VP of External Affairs.

“You’d see it in enrollment fees, not tuition,” said Soltani, who added that a student referendum would be needed to pass any program funded by such fees.

That referendum is expected to be presented to students in April.

New Scholarships for SFUSD Students

Foundation Grantseeking Basics workshop

SF State President Leslie E. Wong recently announced the creation of new twenty scholarships that will be awarded annually to graduates of San Francisco Unified School District high schools who go on to attend SF State. The scholarships will pay $1,000 per year for four years and will be awarded annually beginning with the Fall 2014 semester. The scholarships have been established by a $2.4 million endowment and will be offered as part of the San Francisco Promise program.

The SF Promise program is a partnership between SF State, SFUSD and the City of San Francisco to make higher education an attainable goal for every eligible student.

The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs will host a Foundation Grantseeking Basics Workshop on Thursday, March 6, from 9:30 a.m. to noon. In the workshop, Sarah Jo Neubauer, training coordinator at The Foundation Center/San Francisco, will teach participants how to seek grant funding from private foundation sources. Participants will learn about the steps that need to be taken before seeking a grant, gain an overview of the world of foundation grantmakers, and come away with useful tools and tips about the foundation grantseeking process. The workshop will include a hands-on tutorial for searching the Foundation Directory Online, a comprehensive database of grant information from private foundation sources. The location has yet to be announced.

Police responded to a fire alarm in the electrical building.

When they arrived they found abandoned property and burnt food on a portable grill, which was the cause of the alarm.

Maintenance was called to clean up the mess.

HR2U program kicks off A team of Human Resources Safety & Risk Management’s subject matter experts will set up shop for the first time on Tuesday, Feb. 18, from 5 to 7 p.m. in HSS 233 — and in a different college one evening a week thereafter to provide service to any and all faculty, staff and student workers who are too busy during the day, have time in the evening, or need extra assistance with issues such as pay, benefits and employment in the new HR2U program. Snacks provided and all are welcome.

Between 2/10 and 2/16 the University Police Department responded to 27 incidents.

Here are some of the highlights.

2/15 Spring cleaning

Officers responded to a report of people throwing things from a balcony on Buckingham Way. A fence was damaged, but they could not find out who was at fault.

2/13 Pretty theft

A person reported that someone stole $250 worth of clothes from the laundry room at Mary Park Hall. The wardrobe was not recovered.

2/10 Reunited

Officers noticed an abandoned vehicle, which turned out to be stolen. They notified the owner and the car was taken to storage.

Experts at town hall meeting address community concerns

F State held a town hall style meeting on Feb. 13 to update students, faculty and staff on the closure of the Science Building.

Two experts said the health risks to those who have been in the building are minimal.

The crowd at the nearly half full McKenna Theatre breathed a sigh of relief when Patricia Beach announced that the chemical levels did not pose a health risk.

Beach is the managing partner and senior scientist at Harris & Lee Environmental Sciences, the organization hired to assess the building’s health risks.

The findings are based on a report released Feb. 11, which concluded that the levels of airborne asbestos, mercury and lead in the Science Building are too low to pose a significant danger to health.

“Given that we’re not seeing the material in the air, the adverse health impacts are unlikely to occur for people attending class, visiting or working in the Science building,” said Beach.

The consultants conducted testing by mimicking what it would be like to work inside the Science Building, which found that routine exposure to surfaces and objects in the building resulted in no discovery of airborne contaminant dust.

The contaminants would have needed to be in the air in order for significant exposure to occur, according to Beach.

They would also have to get into

someone’s body to cause harm, meaning that someone would have to inhale it, absorb it through their skin or ingest it.

The contaminants can have serious health effects, but won’t in this case because of the low levels of the contaminants on the surfaces, according to Michael Fischman, a clinical professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco.

“It’s not going to be helpful in terms of understanding if you have a health problem now or are at risk for a health problem down the line,” said Fischman.

For those who were concerned that the contaminants on the surface may have rubbed against their clothing, Fischman said that it’s not likely to cause a health problem.

He added that there isn’t a need for medical testing and that he doesn’t encourage people to do it because of the low levels of the contaminants.

SF State President Leslie E. Wong said that the building is closed as a safety precaution to students and faculty.

“We took the concern seriously as you’re hearing,” Wong said. “We tried to work expeditiously and openly and transparently.”

Wong said that his first strategy was to seal off the building into thirds so that the remediation team could work on sections at a time and progress forward.

He added that this strategy could not

work because the team would be wearing hazmat suits and would be in close distance to students and faculty walking into the clean side of the building.

Despite this, the Science Building will continue to be closed throughout the cleanup process, according to Ron Cortez, vice president for administration and finance and CFO. “There are two reasons for the closure,” said Cortez. “Concerns about health and safety and concerns about our ability to continue to remove (the chemicals).”

Marketing professor Bruce Robertson, one of the 250 faculty and staff displaced by the closure, expressed the frustration experienced by professors who were ordered to leave their offices in the building.

Several other faculty members brought up their concerns at the meeting, including the inability to do research and concerns about the fate of rare Native American artifacts that are in the building.

Several similar buildings will be tested starting this week. This concerned some students and faculty already suffering from the closure of the Science Building.

“I don’t think any of us want another building to be closed down,” said Junior Student Representative Cain Buckler, speaking on behalf of the 6,000 students who have suffered from hastily reshuffled and for two sections, cancelled classes.

Other SF State buildings that will be tested for chemicals include the Business Building, Creative and Fine Arts buildings, HSS Building, and the gym.

There are no plans to close these buildings during testing, according to Wong.

Professor shares dark story of young runaways

A

n SF State cinema lecturer has embarked on a new film project that tells the unfamiliar story of a marginalized San Francisco teenager.

Scott Boswell’s “The Day I Grew Up” chronicles the journey of a 16-year-old Latino-American boy and his autistic 8-yearold brother as they run away from home to avoid their visiting uncle, who is a sexual predator.

Adrian, the film’s teenage protagonist, also severs ties with his parents after he learns that he is not a U.S. citizen.

Now on the streets of San Francisco, Adrian is devastated to discover his seemingly bright future is unattainable.

Powerless, desperate for a comfortable living and incapable of getting a job or proving his identity, he resorts to becoming an erotic masseur.

The 20-minute film is a segment of a feature film Boswell is writing called, “All-American Boy.” The short is based on the experience of Boswell’s friend who left home 12 years ago after discovering he was undocumented. Now at age 28, he remains

independent from his family and is working to obtain citizenship.

Although the story stemmed from a true story, “The Day I Grew Up” will be advertised as fiction.

With the short and feature film release, Boswell continues a theme that appears throughout

his cinematic endeavors–the narrative of an individual’s struggle within a marginalized community. His other feature film, “The Stranger in Us” sheds light on domestic violence in same-sex relationships.

“I’m really drawn to experiences people have in parts of

society where I find there are still social ills,” said Boswell. “Lots of those issues don’t necessarily filter into the mainstream media.

I think those stories need to get out there and hopefully raise awareness.”

Most of the film’s crew are SF State cinema students.

Recently, Boswell handed “All-American Boy” over to a former student of his, Sarah Altshuler, for final edits.

“Cinema is a great department,” said Altshuler, who is currently enrolled in the MFA program. “(Boswell) is in a unique position as someone who teaches production classes – he has a wide pool of talented people to choose from.”

Another former student of Boswell’s, Sibilla Carini, took on the film’s production design.

Together, Carini and Boswell established the “overall feel of the world” that the characters live in. The film was shot without any sets, mostly on the street in the Tenderloin district.

Both Altshuler and Carini said they were inspired to work with Boswell after they took his directing course.

Boswell anticipates that the short film will be released in two months. After the premiere, Boswell will return to writing the corresponding feature film, which he plans to finish in the next year. Boswell hopes the short will inspire potential investors to fund his feature film.

“All-American Boy” will premiere at Coppola Theatre.

Boswell also plans to submit the film to several festivals.

Grais shares stories with future screenwriters of SF State

It takes a brave man to make jokes about actor Steven Seagal, but considering screenwriter and producer Michael Grais worked closely with him on a film, surely Seagal would let it slide.

This past Thursday, Feb. 13, Grais faced the future screenwriters of SF State in Coppola Theatre to share his experiences in the profession and advise those who wished to follow a similar path.

Just one of the stories Grais told SF State students included a meeting with Seagal to read a screenplay for a film that would eventually become the hit 1990 movie “Marked for Death.”

Grais said Seagal was an intimidating character and joked that the actor could easily break his bones, but still needed a bodyguard.

Grais said that Seagal told a

story once about his experiences from being a bodyguard in Japan, so Grais thought of making the story into a screenplay.

He soon found out that Seagal’s “story” was already the plotline of the 1989 movie “Black Rain,” starring Michael Douglas.

This rhythm of laid-back storytelling, followed by a Q&A session, formed Grais’s talk on screenwriting to a medium-sized group of students and professionals pursuing or already in writing careers.

His first topics involved the makings of a writer in contemporary Hollywood, stories of his early writing days and advice on how to stay alive in the business.

“You have to want to do this, or die,” Grais said during the first of the three-part speaker series.

The talk was hosted by Cinema Assistant Professor Julian Hoxter, who monitored questions from the audience.

Grais began his talk with professional advice for students by encouraging them to be on LinkedIn, an online network that specifically helps connect people to potential employers and others in their professions.

Grais said this site helped get himself and his screenplays noticed when starting out as a screenwriter, and that it still helps him today.

By presenting a sizzle reel–a short video used to market a product to advertisers or producers–of a reality show he is currently working on, Grais showed the audience how his particular work pertains to a “contemporary audience.”

The reel, titled “Down Ass Bitches,” is about a group of girls who get kicked out of their sororities and decide to start their own sorority on their terms.

Grais said he is waiting to see if the film gets sold.

also provided the audience with some advice on marketing by discussing Kickstarter, the most noted platform for funding creative projects. Glick stressed the need for screenwriters to be aware of the difficulties Kickstarter can sometimes bring, but also advised students that it can be a great tool for gaining control of a project, which she says is very important in the business.

“Take your own career into your own hands as much as possible,” Glick said.

Glick said she met Grais six years ago and is now his writing partner for a book written solely in dialogue, called “A License to Live: James Bond’s Trade Secrets for Living Well With Depression.”

Grais finished his talk by discussing how the film industry has changed from when he started writing. These differences begin with the learning process because, Grais said, there were no

courses or books on screenwriting when he was in school, so he learned to write screenplays by working with a mentor who was a friend of his parents.

Another noticeable change in Hollywood, Grais noted, is that the audience movies are being made for is much younger and there simply are not any films that are geared toward older generations.

SF State senior and Cinema major Lyra Greenberg said she enjoyed listening to Grais’s insight on these matters. She plans on attending the next screenwriting talk with her class. “I feel like we’re blessed to have these people come here (and talk to us),” she said.

Next in the speaker series is Sam Hamm, who will discuss the pleasures and pitfalls of genre screenwriting from 5:10-7:55 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20 at Coppola Theatre.

Musicians from across country gather for Chamber Music Seminar

s the lights dimmed in Knuth Hall on Sunday, the last night of the Yehudi Menuhin Chamber Music Seminar and Festival began. Incorporating concerts and a seminar filled with workshops, lessons, intense coaching and public master classes for all ages; the festival ran from Feb. 13 to Feb. 16.

The Morrison Chamber Music Center founded the festival in 2003. The center chose to honor Menuhin, a world-renowned violinist, because of his strong connection to SF State.

Menuhin brought the Alexander String Quartet to San Francisco in 1989 when they were based in New York, said Zakarias Grafiol, a member of the quartet.

The event ended Sunday night with the final concert, featuring many performers including SF State’s Holloway String Trio, made up of violinist Brooke Parker, violist Whitney Smith and cellist Ami Nashimoto, as well as Lieder Alive Jessica Wan

soprano, clarinet player Natalie Parker and pianist Michael Anthony Schuler, performing a piece from Franz Schubert.

In addition, all of the high school participants as well as their coaches performed together with the Alexander String Quartet as a chamber orchestra performing “An Die Musik,” sung by Gillian Eschelman.

The Galante prize, an annual Bay Area chamber music prize for high school ensembles, was awarded to Chiaroscuro Quartet, winning the $1000 cash prize.

The winner and all competing duos, trios, quartets and quintets have been working toward the prize since December, when the selection process for participants began.

Artistic Director Paul Yarbrough said he was inspired to have the festival because the Alexander String Quartet became close to Yehudi in his last years of his life. The quartet was formed 33 years ago, but has been at SF State for 25 years.

“We want people to stay and be entertained. During open houses people tend to come, grab food and leave. We want them to at least have fun in the process,” he said.

“It’s really nice. I’m really impressed on what (the club has) done. It’s really rare of them to do a maid and butler cafe.

I’m a sucker for a properly dressed gentleman,” said sophomore Grisel Loyola, a longtime Anime FX member.

According to club officer J.J. Romero, maid cafes are very popular in Japan and

are part of Japan’s vast service industry.

“Being the anime club, we want to bring the culture here, but without charging (the attendants),” he said.

The first permanent maid cafe opened in the Akihabara district in Tokyo, Japan in 2001. The area is a major shopping center for hardcore anime fans, known as “otaku.” The area is also home to many theme cafes where the wait staff participate in cosplay.

The cosplayers not only dress up as a particular character, they take on the personality and mannerisms of the character

as well. Maid and butler cafes are a subset of cosplay cafes, both of which have recently increased in popularity in Japan and other countries.

Hambalek said that the club will have events in the future but they won’t be as big as the maid and butler cafe. According to Keaton, the club doesn’t have the budget to hold big events every week.

General Anime FX meetings involve playing video and screening anime but they aren’t limited to such activities.

“We try to do something unique and fun every weekend,” said Romero.

LOCAL BAND PLANS TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM THIS FALL

Ryan Fisher’s iPhone is full of sound bites, averaging 17 seconds each. These guitar licks, vocal melodies, rhythms and chord changes are skeletons for the songs that his band, Magheetah, has spent months composing and arranging.

Although the songs are constantly evolving, Fisher said the band is ready to start recording their sophomore album this week.

Magheetah’s second record will branch out from their debut album, “Heavy Baby,” said Fisher.

“We’re going to make it more on the dance, groovy side,” he said of the new record. “It’s going to be more cohesive–up beat.

We might even include some drum samples.”

The band has been around for almost four years now. While attending SF State, Fisher and his old friend Alex Swain, who had been attending UC Berkeley, would go visit their friends J.J. Mellon and Tim Tyson at UC Santa Cruz. Fisher and his friends would jam at their friends’ houses and play Dr. Dog, The Rolling Stones and Wilco cover sets at parties around campus. “(The band has some) cool riffs, some nice bluesy solos and the vocals are clean. (They) kind

of sound like the Black Keys at times,” said Tyler Machado, a junior environmental studies major and fan of the local band.

When they all graduated in 2010, Fisher and Mellon had a handful of original songs that they used to start their own band in San Francisco. They enlisted Swain and Tyson to fill in the rhythm section and began arranging and rehearsing songs immediately. Since then, they have played all over California

and performed on stage with Little Hurricane, The Stone Foxes, the Soft White Sixties and landed an opening slot with Fisher’s idols, Dr. Dog, at the America’s Cup Pavilion.

Still, it hasn’t been the most active year on record for the band, said Fisher.

Swain, Magheetah’s drummer has been touring with hip hop producer Dan The Automator since August 2012. Mellon, Magheetah’s guitarist, has been

increasingly involved with InGrooves, a global music distributor. Regardless, Fisher said he isn’t doubtful of the band’s future.

“If anything I think (the members’ own projects) can help the band,” said Fisher. “(Swain) touring with Dan the Automator kind of stopped our momentum, but it gave him a great understanding about recording, tracking and mapping the whole process out.”

If there is one thing they would really like to do differently from the last record, said Fisher, its “mapping it out.”

“We’re going into this one more carefully, with a solid blueprint,” he said. “We’re taking it song by song, day by day.” Fisher said that the record will be less guitar–driven and focus more on crafting songs.

“Fish’s attention to songs are really what separates Magheetah from most of what you hear in town,” said Brett Meumann, Fisher’s old friend and audio engineer who is helping Swain record the new album at Swain’s house in the Lower Haight. “We never just hammer them out.

They all take a lot of time and work, and it really shows.”

“We’re not the White Stripes or something, we aren’t a guitar rock band,” continued Fisher.

“We want people to put on this record and not have to think about it too much. We want it to be easily digestible.”

Fisher paused for a moment and thought about the songs they chose for the record. “There are two songs, ‘Tides’ and ‘On a Holiday,’ that we have been playing for years and have had great reception,” he said. “We’re really excited about a few of the other ones that no one has heard yet.”

Fisher plans to finish recording by the beginning of summer and release the EP in the fall.

Gators beat nationally ranked team in lopsided win

CAREER GAME from the Gators’ senior guard Jennifer Le led SF State to a dominant 15-point victory over Cal Poly Pomona Saturday.

The Broncos entered the game as the No. 14 ranked team in the country, but were held in check by the Gator defense losing 78-63.

“Tonight, defense was key to the game,” said senior forward Lauren Varney

as she explained the Gators’ passing throughout the evening. “We moved the ball really well and had 19 assists.

Everyone was involved and we played really well together.”

Le had a fantastic game, scoring a career-high 17 points while adding three assists. Le missed one shot attempt all game, finishing the game 5-6 from the field while hitting on all three of her shots behind the arc.

“We come in on Mondays to practice shooting free throws and we have really improved,” Le said. “Our teamwork was really important in the game tonight.

Varney led SF State with 19 points and four assists. Katie Batlin had a strong allaround game with a near triple-double, 16 points, nine rebounds and eight assists.

“This is our second Saturday win we’ve had this season,” said head coach, Joaquin Wallace. “To win it against this team was really good especially because we’re still fighting to get into the tournament.”

The Broncos brought the heat in the first half, shooting 51 percent from the floor, but the Gators were able to overcome their opponents with free throws and passing, exiting the first half

with a 41-40 lead.

SF State was able to avenge an early season loss to Cal Poly Pomona in January when they lost by 13.

With the win the Gators improve their record to 10-8 in the CCAA and are tied for fifth place in the conference with four games left in the season.

“We came out with great energy,” said Wallace. “We are still fighting to get into the tournament, so we are in a pretty good position right now (after tonight’s win).

But we still have work to do next week.”

The Gators travel down to Southern California next weekend to take on UC San Diego and Cal State San Bernardino.

After a back-and-forth first period that had the Gators down by only one point, the team could not keep up with No. 25 Cal Poly Pomona in the second.

The Gators fell to the conference-leading Broncos, 6252 at The Swamp Saturday.

“We had some looks but we just didn’t knock down any shots,” said head coach Paul Trevor. “It put so much pressure on us defensively and they exploited us in the second half.”

Senior guard Will Overton Jr. led all scorers with 19 points and nine rebounds.

“We got stagnant on offense,” Overton Jr. said.

“We have a bad habit where if we can’t score, we don’t play defense and our hands go down.”

Senior guard Nefi Perdomo finished with 11 points on just 4-19 shooting. Perdomo was the only other Gator to score in double figures.

“It was just one of those games,” Perdomo said. “I’ll do better next time, I just didn’t

have a good game.”

The Broncos defense stopped the Gators from going inside, forcing the team to rely on perimeter shooting. The Gators were only 5-30 from behind the three-point line.

“Our strength all year has been our shooting,” Trevor said. “Tonight we just didn’t capitalize on our opportunities and it really hurt us.”

With 13 minutes left in the game, the Gators were up 34-33 before things started to get out of hand. Turnovers and failed conversions helped the Broncos

go on a 14-2 run that put the game out of reach.

“We talk about it as a chance to grow, get better,” Trevor said.

“Don’t hang your heads, be proud of how hard you worked.”

Senior guard Bennie Rhodes injured his hand early in the first half and did not return.

The loss ended the Gators’ three-game win streak, the longest of the season.

The team’s next pair of games will be next weekend Feb. 21-22 as the Gators travel to face UC San Diego and No. 12 Cal State San Bernardino.

Administration seeks to change Gator mascot to raise school spirit

SF State President Leslie E. Wong recently stated in an interview with Xpress that he was looking into changing the school’s mascot.

“I’m about 90 percent sure that we are not going to be the Gators,” said Wong.

“It’s overwhelming that people don’t get the gator thing at all.”

President Wong proposed the mascot change along with several other improvements that he hopes will make SF State into a more sports-oriented University, such as the $2.1 million renovation of SF State’s Gym as part of his strategic planning effort.

Wong also added that he felt the gator does not add value to athletics; instead he wanted a mascot that best fits us and signals the new future.

But before the gator became the mascot, students at SF State introduced the idea of a cat mascot in 1922.

archivist, Helene Whitson, the gator was chosen as the school’s mascot in 1931.

The Bay Leaf, the school’s paper at the time, asked readers to choose a mascot that would be worthy of the school’s reputation.

The person who chose the gator as a mascot is only attributed to “a reader” on the SF State Centennial History website.

Their decision behind choosing the

mascot was because “it is strong and we hope our teams have strength. It is wellbuilt and is steadfast, steadily moving toward its goal.”

Originally the word gator was spelled “Gater,” as a reference to the Golden Gate Bridge, but frequent misspellings caused it to eventually default back to gator. The gator beat out other candidates such as a seal, a panther, and a puma.

In the 1960s, SF State had a live alligator mascot named Al, who visited the school’s football team once or twice a year. Al was usually muzzled and doped up “from his tail to his snout” during his visits, according to SF State’s 1963 yearbook.

Al ‘s gender was often in question, but that mystery was solved after he fathered nearly a dozen eggs, according to the 1963 AS President Jay Folberg.

“Al gets all kinds of attention when he comes,” reads the 1963 yearbook, “Girls tremblingly pet him. Guys tease him. All look. And he gets to sit with the team.”

But not everyone agrees that our mascot is in need of a change.

“I like the gator,” said Felipe Ramirez, a hospitality major. “I think the gator expresses the good things about our school.”

However, Ramirez said that if the University was going to change the mascot, it should be something that represents Northern California, unlike the gator.
