FROM OUR Executive Director

Welcome to our annual Gala, this year presented by Truist! It feels fantastical to be together again with our hearts full and our arms open to embrace our Task Force family. So delicious.

The theme of this year‘s Gala - Red, White, and YOU - is so important right now. We’re only weeks away from the critical midterm elections. I’m proud to tell you that the Na tional LGBTQ Task Force Action Fund, our c4 arm, has been working so hard on our Queer the Vote campaign. Our staff were on the ground in central Florida and other places where we know the LGBTQ+ vote can make a real difference, educating, encouraging and activating LGBTQ+ people to get registered to vote if they’re eligible and inspiring registered voters to get as engaged in these elections – in democracy - as they can.

In 1973 (I promise I’m going somewhere with this) a group of activists and advocates, fed up with the overtly hostile anti-gay climate in the US, had a vision for an organization that would work to advocate for the humanity and equality of queer people. Their dream birthed the National Gay Task Force.

Talk about inspiring and educating, right?

Which means that… in 2023 the National LGBTQ Task Force will celebrate our 50th anniversary! We’ll launch this year-long celebration in February at our annual Creating Change conference in San Francisco. We hope you can join us and thou sands of other queer activists and allies to organize, plan, restore and recharge for the hard work ahead.

Given what our young people and other marginalized communities, especially trans and non-binary people and people of color, are facing and have been facing for far too long, I know it is as important as it’s ever been that we come together to inspire and fortify each other to stay the course. We are pushing back against literally hundreds of anti-LGBTQ pieces of legislation that aim to do harm at the intersections -- from reproductive justice to racial justice, from disability justice to voting rights. All these issues are issues of equity, and the Task Force knows the battle is pitched – and will be won – here as well.

For many of us in this room, the social and political climate of our country today feels like it did in 1973.

All of this means it’s even more necessary that we take the time tonight to celebrate and honor some extraordinary individuals!

We are thrilled this year to honor the Gadinsky family, who ex emplify solidarity, generosity and unconditional love. This awe some family is beloved by the Task Force. They’ve been part of our family for so many years. We hope they feel all the love in the room from the hundreds of people here and the thousands of people whose lives they have helped change. Their support, hard work and leadership in the LGBTQ+ movement, both locally and throughout Florida and even on the national stage, has catalyzed change over and over. Our hearts are full again with our love for this family.

It’s clear by now how important a role the media plays in educating the world. Particularly, media has played an enormous role in explaining the reality of our queer lives and the hostility we face. Media gives our queer voices the platform we deserve. Jonathan Capehart has, throughout his career, helped build that platform, both as an opinion columnist for The Washington Post and as an MSNBC host. When others in the mainstream media decided to not talk about the endless, ongoing attacks on trans and non-binary people, Jonathan was among the first to make clearon national television -- that transgender rights are human rights and that representation matters and to use his skills and access to make sure we can tell our stories with the hope of changing hearts and minds.

And I am thrilled to share the stage with X González (they/them), a gun-violence prevention activist, born and raised in Parkland, Florida. As you know, Parkland was the site of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in February of 2018. X is a survivor of that day, meaning they weren’t just born and raised there, they were forged in the fires of Parkland’s most awful days. X became a leading voice in the gun-violence prevention movement with their powerful “We Call BS” speech just days after the mas sacre. Later that year they were a key organizer of the #MarchForOurLives protest in Washington D.C., the larg est student-led demonstration in American history. X continues to be a powerful advocate for gun violence prevention. As important, X makes sure that the intersectional nature of this

4

fight is always up front. As the parent of two school-age kids, you know this award touches me deeply. That X took this local dis aster and birthed a national, student-led movement makes me hopeful even while the need for their work makes me sad. And it makes me very proud that they’re joining us tonight to accept our ChangeMaker Award.

Finally, the best and most important thing about tonight is YOU! Our work would not be possible without the support of individuals, sponsors and partners like the ones sitting in this room tonight. Your deep and consistent commitment to sup porting not only the Task Force but also local, state and na tional work is humbling and inspiring. It’s your generosity and belief in what we do that makes it possible for us to do the hard work of combating ignorance and the stunning hatred aimed at our community.

This is an extraordinarily challenging time and I am so proud of everyone who has exemplified courage, love, compassion, and an unyielding commitment to justice in the face of every attack and obstacle thrown our wayfrom pandemics to politics.

Tonight, remember that we have cared for each other when others wished us harm. Remember we have always built communities of love and grace even when we were told we were unworthy of both. Remember that we are the forgers of new paths. Joy, pride, resilience, and camaraderie are at the heart of our movement for justice and equity. We will dance, laugh, cry, and commit to each other tonight and every day. We will grow our influence, increase our allies, and fight until we can live in a world where liberation, equity and love rule the day. Tonight, we remember we are worth cele brating. And so we shall!

Yours in the struggle,

FROM OUR Event Chair

Dear Gala Guests,

Welcome to the 26th Annual National LGBTQ Task Force Gala. We are proud to present this year’s program Red, White & You in honor of our heroes, our community and one of the nation’s oldest LGBTQ advocacy organizations, the Task Force. We hope that tonight’s event will inspire you to make a difference in the lives of LGBTQ people. For 26 years the Task Force Gala has played a crucial role in giving back to the South Florida and na tional LGBTQ communities. We gather tonight ahead of anoth er crucial election cycle with hope to unite our guests, donors and allies collectively in support of the organization’s “Queering Democracy” initiative to inspire our community to vote and show up at the polls. From local school board campaigns to state-wide and national races, we know that LGBTQ people often move the needle in close elections. Historical culture wars have returned in full force, putting the rights of our families, our children and our bodies on the ballot. The Task Force has been in this fight for almost 50 years and will continue to be at the forefront of change and progress to advance freedoms.

I am honored to serve as this year’s Gala Chair and humbled to stand in the place of many legendary leaders have stood in the past. I share with many of you an immense amount of grati tude as we present our 2022 Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award to the Gadinsky family; Liebe, Seth, Naomi, and Tashi. The Gadinskys have championed equality for LGBTQ+ people based on their belief that we all deserve dignity and respect from our government, in our place of worship and from our employ ers. I hope their story and passion inspire you to give your time and treasures to further build upon their achievements.

This year, our National Leadership Award is bestowed upon Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and MSNBC anchor, Jonathan Capehart. Jonathan grew up in Newark, NJ, near my hometown, and attended the prestigious St. Benedict’s Preparatory School. Jonathan has worked at the crossroads of journalism and de mocracy and uses his platform as an African American, openly gay, married man to inspire and elevate the LGBTQ community. In the face of attacks on truth in the media, we must support journalists who raise their voice in defense of democracy. We all benefit from having leaders like Jonathan Capehart who bring their full identity to the medium and give us a seat at the table.

In 2021, our Gala committee created the ChangeMaker Award

to honor an individual who is working on the front lines to transform society for future gen erations and advance freedom, justice and full equality for all LG BTQ+ people. This year we recognize X González, co-founder of Never Again MSD and a leading voice in the fight to end gun violence. X has been a leader in the South Florida community since heading the GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) at Marjo ry Stoneman Douglas and has fearlessly taken on the NRA. X has also been a force challenging the discriminatory “Don’t Say Gay” legislation and an advocate for young people to take their power to the polls!

I have been a volunteer for over 15 years with the Task Force, and I remain inspired by the impressive achievements of the vol unteers and staff who produce this iconic event. This has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I want to thank my Gala Vice Chair, Craig Jarrett, who has made us all shine brighter tonight. Of course, I could not have done this without the love and strength of my family, including my partner in life, Tony Mendoza, and my son, Michael. I hope to inspire Michael to give back to the world and pursue the path of activism. Thank you to this year’s Gala committee and the volunteers who are all super stars that elevate this event with their drive, creativity and dedication. I am proud to be part of Truist, who supported the event as Presenting Sponsor and is a purpose-driven organiza tion that embraces diversity, equity and inclusion. I also want to extend my gratitude to all our sponsors and donors who support our efforts to make this the largest fundraiser possible. And, finally, I want to thank each one of you who are here tonight. I hope that in the spirit of Red, White & YOU your own personal march toward equality will continue, making our world a better place for all LGBTQ+ people and their families.

My sincerest gratitude, Jeff Oliverio 2022 Gala Chair

ABOUT Eddy McIntyre

Sometimes awards are named after people who stand out in the community. The Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award is named for someone who stood out and stood up.

The breadth of Eddy’s interests and contributions across this community are legion. It was clear that Eddy understood the society we lived in was ours to create, even as it shaped us. Eddy understood that if he saw something needed, he could help make it happen. Eddy understood that community is a participatory and not a passive experience. And, of course, Eddy never sought any personal credit or acknowledgment.

But Eddy had no trouble giving recognition to others. As a founding board member of the Dade Human Rights Foundation, it was Eddy, along with his co-board member Rosemary Wilder, who envisioned an annual dinner to acknowledge and appreciate the service of some of the community’s leaders. Thus the Task Force Gala was born, a celebration to honor many who have made wonderful contri butions to our community. And though each one likely made his or her contributions without thought of recognition or thanks, they nonetheless received both.

Eddy received neither recognition nor the award, no matter how well deserved it was. He probably would have been embarrassed to receive this honor while alive, seeming to him too unseemly to receive an award he had helped to establish.

But the fact remains that Eddy well belonged in that select group of honorees. So as we go forward, we want to be sure that each of the future’s honorees understands that he or she is in Eddy’s company.

The National LGBTQ Task Force therefore renamed the an nual Community Service Award as the Eddy McIntyre Com munity Service Award. And so by saying “Thank You” to others, we keep alive the spirit, the passion, and the empow erment that Eddy so selflessly shared with us all.

2022 EDDY MCINTYRE COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD

The National LGBTQ Task Force is proud to present the 2022 Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award to a family that has championed equality for LGBTQ people and broad social jus tice reform for more than three decades: Liebe, Seth, Naomi and Natasha (Tashi) Gadinsky.

The Gadinskys’ advocacy for the LGBTQ community began when Liebe befriended an LGBTQ congregant at her church and joined forces with him to make the church a reconciling congregation (one that is welcoming to LGBTQ people). Liebe and Seth then became involved with SAVE’s efforts to amend the Miami-Dade County Human Rights Ordinance to include sexual orientation. It was a six-year battle – two years to pass the ordinance and another four to protect it from repeal. During this time Liebe was essentially a full-time volunteer working for LGBTQ equality, and Naomi and Tashi spent much of their childhood in the trenches, helping out by stuffing en velopes, greeting guests at events and being cheerleaders for fledgling activists.

In 2007 Liebe joined the steering committee for the National LGBTQ Task Force Gala (then called the Miami Recog nition Dinner) to honor her dear friend Jerry Chasen, and she be came the heart of the Gala committee for 15 years. She served 13 years on the Task Force’s Board of Directors, five as Board CoChair – the only straight ally to ever hold that position. Seth also became a fierce member of the Task Force family; he performed innumerable tasks to support the Gala, from picking up items donated to the auction to appearing on stage to ask the audi ence to give more to the organization. His first on-stage “ask” was less than two weeks after the 2016 presidential election, and his speech invigorated a devastated community.

Liebe and Seth have supported almost all of our local LGBTQ organizations, donating time, money and, in many cases, both. Their work has been recognized by many of these organizations, including SAVE, the Aqua Foundation for Women and Miami Beach Gay Pride. Their efforts also extend to other social justice and community organizations. Liebe has

served on The Miami Foundation Board of Governors in vari ous roles and supported the girls’ school, Ransom Everglades, in many different positions. Seth served as Florida Board Chair for the Anti-Defamation League and chair of the 41st Street Committee for the City of Miami Beach. Both currently sit on advisory boards for Miami-Dade County.

Naomi and Tashi have always been advocates in their own right, providing a safe space and encouragement for their young classmates who wanted to come out. Both girls prioritized LGBTQ diversity in choosing their colleges. Tashi introduced World AIDS Day and a Gay-Straight Alliance to her high school. A therapist, Tashi wrote her PhD dissertation on the topic of helping transgender people who experience anxiety.

The families of our most visible and vocal heroes are often unsung in their support, inspiration, education and sacrifice in service of the success of our champions. We are grateful to Naomi and Tashi not just for their own contributions but also for sharing their parents’ time, love and support with us.

The Gadinskys have always championed LGBTQ equality in every setting: church, schools, the golf course, board meetings… you name it. We are lucky to have them fighting for our community.

Jonathan Capehart

2022 NATIONAL LEADERSHIP AWARD

Jonathan Capehart is a Pulitzer Prize-winning Associate Editor of The Washington Post and anchor of “The Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart” on MSNBC. As an out and proud gay Black man, he reaches millions with substan tive, inclusive coverage of our community and the issues we care about and amplifies the stories of diverse LGBTQ+ people, from activists working on the front lines to politicians to celebrities. His voice makes a difference, speaking truth to power and doing what his hero and friend, Congressman and civil rights icon John Lewis, called “making good trouble.”

Jonathan has embraced the many ways to reach the public, from writing podcasts to television and streaming. Since 2007 he has been an opinion writer and member of The Washington Post’s editorial board. He hosts a weekly Opinions podcast, “Capehart”, and the weekly Washington Post Live show “First Look,” which is also streamed on “The Choice MSNBC” on Comcast’s Peacock streaming service.

His MSNBC special “A Promised Land: A Conversation with Barack Obama” was nominated in 2021 for an Emmy for “Outstanding News Discussion & Analysis.” His MSNBC special “Pride of the White House” won a GLAAD Media Award for “Outstanding TV Journalism - Long Form” in 2022.

At PBS, Jonathan serves as a political analyst on The PBS Newshour and is featured on the popular Friday segment “Brooks and Capehart.”

From 2002 to 2004, Jonathan was deputy editorial page editor of the New York Daily News and served on that paper’s editorial board from 1993 to 2000. In 1999 his 16-month editorial campaign to save the famed Apollo Theater in Harlem earned him and the board the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Writing. He left the Daily News in July 2000 to be come the national affairs columnist at Bloomberg News and took a leave from this position in February 2001 to serve as a policy adviser to Michael Bloomberg in his first successful campaign for New York City mayor.

Jonathan is a role model to our LGBTQ+ community, a journalist of the highest integrity who recognizes the responsibility and power of having the platforms to inform, educate, challenge and engage the public on our issues and give space for our stories to be told. At a time when there is so much misinformation about the LGBTQ+ community in the media, his work is all the more important.

2022 CHANGEMAKER AWARD X Gonzalez

In 2021, the National LGBTQ Task Force introduced our ChangeMaker Award. This award is intended to recognize someone who embodies our intersectional vision for a society where LGBTQ+ people are free to be themselves, who works to remove barriers for the LGBTQ+ community, and who are committed to transforming society for future generations. We are thrilled to present the 2022 ChangeMaker Award to X González.

X’s work as a gun-violence prevention activist borne of their surviving the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting has been instrumental in energizing and mobilizing a generation of advocates. They are a role model for courage and ferocity to all youth and an icon speaking

truth to power after their powerful speech “We Call BS”. In 2018, they were instrumental in organizing the historic #MarchForOurLives protest in Washington, DC, the largest student-led demonstration in American history. While in high school, X also served as the President of the Gay-Straight Alliance.

X continues to be at the forefront advocating for gun violence prevention including intersectional issues such as racial justice and LGBTQ+ rights. In the wake of the mass shootings in Buffalo, Uvalde, and Tulsa this year, X spoke at March For Our Lives’ second rally in Washington DC. Most recently, X graduated from New College of Florida with a major in activism.

Thank you to the many activists and community leaders who work tirelessly each year to put on this successful event. Please enjoy your time in our beautiful city.

I'm proud to continue working alongside all of you to build a more tolerant, diverse, and thriving Miami-Dade and world. Together, we make our community stronge r year after year.

MM&H is proud to celebrate 49 years of vision, passion and advocacy for equality for ALL Congratulations to the honorees, The Gadinsky Family and Jonathan Capehart Don

We are honored to join the National LGBTQ Task Force as allies in the important work of advancing equality for the LGBTQ+ community and their families. Through All LVMH Pride, we have embarked on a journey of discovery leading us to seek greater understanding that supports and connects all LGBTQ+ team members and those who stand beside them.

MICHAEL UDINE, MAYOR, BROWARD COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSION, DISTRICT 3

Congratulations to the National LGBTQ Task Force on accomplishing 26 years of advocacy towards achieving full equality for the LGBTQ community in Broward County.

Friends,

The National LGBTQ Task Force advocates for freedom, truth and leadership to make the world a better place. One of the Task Force's objectives is to help individuals to pursue a world where everyone is free to be their whole selves.

Welcome back to Miami Beach for the National LGBTQ Task Force Gala. The work that you do is so incredibly crucial to our society, and it is our privilege to host you in our community.

Advocacy is the cornerstone of democracy where society gets to vocalize the wants and needs for change. I am honored to be considered an ally to this community and I look forward to continuing to advocate for the human rights of my LGBTQ constituents. Broward County has always championed Human Rights. We were one of the first counties to establish a Human Rights Ordinance protecting individuals from unlawful discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations.

The City of Miami Beach prides itself on standing out among the rest. We fly our Progress Pride Flag every day because the march toward equality requires an everyday commitment. Just outside this building is our beautiful, new “Pride Park” and Harvey Milk Way .

Congratulations to Liebe, Seth, Naomi and Tashi Gadisnky on bein g honored with the 2022 Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award. I attended college with both Liebe and Seth and have watched them grow into true leaders and social justice warriors. The fact that their daughters have followed their example is simply inspiring. And I am likewise proud their award is named after my law school friend Eddy McIntyre. Eddy was never shy about speaking out, so I think he would love the idea that the Gadinsky clan is receiving an award in his name.

On behalf of the City of Broward County, I would like to congratulate the 2022 award recipients and thank all the LGBTQ activists collaborating with National LGBTQ Task Force because it is through efforts like these that we get to change society and promote justice for all.

Thank you to the many activists and community leaders who work tirelessly each year to put on this successful event. Please enjoy your time in our beautiful city.

Sincerely,

ABOUT THE

The National LGBTQ Task Force advances full freedom, justice and equality for LGBTQ people. We’re building a future where everyone is free to be themselves in every aspect of their lives. Today, despite all the progress we’ve made to end discrimination, millions of LGBTQ people

face barriers in every aspect of their lives: in housing, employment, healthcare, retirement, and basic human rights. These barriers must go. That’s why the Task Force is training and mobilizing millions of activists across our nation to deliver a world where you can be you.

United in purpose and care for all people.

Truist is proud to sponsor the National LGBTQ Task Force. Their vision of a world where LGBTQ+ people are affirmed, respected, and included in their local communities reflects our own commitment to care and the purpose we live by.

At the core of that purpose—to build better lives and communities—are the values that guide us to be intentional about diversity, equity, and inclusion. And we continue to work at this every day. Because we believe a culture where we can live and contribute our authentic selves is a stronger one.
