Hello Members, Its still cold outside but there are signs of spring is just around the corner. The early blossom trees are out and the buds are swelling fast on most of my deciduous trees. It was sad to hear from Elaine Mancell of the passing of Alan Byers. Alan was a former President, Vice President and Secretary of Mornington Peninsula Bonsai Society our condolences to his family and friends. It brings to light the problem we face as a small club. Attracting new members and keeping the club growing. I was pleased to read from the Southern Tasmania club that they have increased their membership by 50% over the last 12 months. I know that hosting the AABC Convention was a big factor in increasing the popularity of Bonsai in the Hobart and surrounding population. It would be great if our small club can get some interest following the 2018 Convention in Melbourne. Last month we had a nice gathering at the hall and I have realised I don’t have any photos to share. We brought along a tree or two to work on and gather advice on, either from our Nursery trip to Bendigo or something else. It was another enjoyable day and most of us had a productive day. I didn’t get around to wiring or pruning my tree, too much talking. This month we have Shrua coming along to talk about fertilising your trees to maximise the growth you can get into each year to quickly develop your starter trees. After our trip up to Shrua’s and David’s a few months back I’m sure you know how much he puts into getting those trees developing into bonsai. Also a reminder that next week Bendigo Bonsai Club welcomes Rui Ferreira to give a Demonstration Friday night and then Workshops Saturday morning and Afternoon. GBS will be paying for our Members to attend on Friday night so be sure to let me know if you would like to attend so we can book in with Bendigo. Registrations are now open for The 31st Australian National Bonsai Convention Being held in Melb 20/23 July 2018 Titled "Bonsai Exposed", the convention will feature Bjorn Bjorholm from USA, as the Headliner. The Victorian Demonstrators are Joe Morgan-Payler, Hanh Tran and Michael Simonetto.
