Hello Members, Well that was a wild and woolly Wednesday. Good to see some rain out of it though. I hope you are all keeping well now that the cooler weather is setting in. I actually got out and weeded a few pots on the long weekend they always look much healthier when they are cleaned up. I have a few of my deciduous trees I want to pot up ready for the Winter Exhibition. Speaking of the Winter Exhibition, I hope you have all seen Glenn’s excellent advertising campaign. It is great to see something different and once we get closer to the event we can push it on some of the local Facebook Groups to drum up some additional interest. Here is a link if you haven’t seen it yet https://www.facebook.com/goldfieldsbonsoc/videos/640713283061038/ and the calendar invite for the exhibition https://www.facebook.com/events/455919128300949/ Last month we had our Bus trip to Melbourne to attend the AABC Convention hosted by the Victorian Native Bonsai Club with Exhibition and Sales area. The 12 seater wasn’t quite big enough with 15 members attending on the day. Thanks for driving down Pam. I slipped into the Conference Demonstration area (with permission from Marcella and Quentin) during the lunch break to try and catch up with Headline Guest presenter Ryan Neal from the USA. Unfortunately he was busy working on a Collected Kunzea trying to get the wiring finished for the demonstration he was working on, so I didn’t interrupt him. After lunch at the exhibition we travelled home passed Orient Bonsai Nursery in Reservoir. They have a large range of well priced pots and lots of trees. The starter trees were well priced also. A great day was had by all, see Helen’s notes and photos on the next page. This month is a general workshop day, winter is the perfect time to shape and wire your deciduous trees and you can also repot your dormant trees as well but don’t overwater afterwards. That’s enough from me, I hope to catch up with you all on Sunday for another enjoyable day with friends and bonsai. Paul

May Bus trip to AABC Convention Trip to AABC convention bonsai exhibition and sale. Last month our club members bussed to Melbourne to the AABC Native bonsai convention and exhibition. We left Castlemaine at 9.30 and picked up other members along the way. Much chat and fun on the bus. The exhibition of trees was excellent with a variety of native species being represented. The sales area was very interesting because a range of bonsai “accessories were on sale. Stands, rocks, pots and trees were available. We lunched together and then went on to Orient Bonsai, following that we returned safely to Castlemaine. Thank you to Paul for driving us. You drove expertly. Helen

Info on the Winter Exhibition from Glenn On our recent road trip to the impressive Native Bonsai Exhibition we had a great opportunity to chat at length about our up coming Winter Exhibition. Last year Diederik and Paul organised the new venue. The Daylesford Town Hall is an outstanding venue located in the main street, with very little promotion we had significant number of Bonsai enthusiasts travel from all over to pay us a visit along with many locals and weekenders. With the recent growth of the GBS we should be able spread the work load and make this years Winter Exhibition another significant success. I heard some discussion and a comment "We should get serious and promote this BIG" or something like that? I had a think and a chat, looked over our and other clubs previous advertisements then decided to try something different. We settled on a 3 stage audio visual promotion. Stage 1/ a short single video released approx. 1 month before winter, using BLUE filters and winter sfx "WINTER IS COMING!" Stage 2/ Released on the weekend of winter "WINTER IS HERE!" Blue filters multiple images all with various winter sfx including venue info, audio voice over with edited music from Game of Thrones/Winter is here!. Stage 3/ A brief single image "REMINDER" released 2 weeks before the event, using same sfx "IT's HERE Goldfields Bonsai Society WINTER IS HERE!" including venue info. There is also an Event Page. The promotions have been shared all through out the Bonsai Community. We will be discussing additional promotions at our next meeting. So far the response has been positive. We will be requiring trees from as many members as possible to make this an authentic Goldfields Bonsai Society Exhibition. Please bring along trees to prepare for the exhibition. If they are already in tip top condition then please come with detailed info on the trees along with the number of trees you have available. Regards Glenn.
