Hello Members, It’s the middle of winter and the weather is matching the season at last. Although the Showell’s have managed to avoid this weeks cold snap by being in Merimbula. I hope you have all been well. I wasn’t able to attend the June meeting because of a family engagement but I can see from Helen’s notes that an enjoyable day was had but those who where there and Trevor gave valuable advice on creating muck as well as matching trees to pots. Please see Helen’s notes on the next page for the information discussed on the day. This Sunday we will be working on trees for the winter exhibition to be held in two weeks at Daylesford town hall. We need to discus the details of the advertising, setup and display. I hope you can all come along with ideas and your availability and tree information. Winter is a great time to study your trees and plan the coming years work. Spend time looking at the structure of the branches especially you deciduous trees without leaves. Identify those trees you will be repotting in the next few months. Keep an eye out for the swelling of buds on the early bloomers like quince and almond as they will need to be first up. Next weekend we have the AABC National Convention in Melbourne. I hope those of you who aren’t participating in the activities still try to make a trip down to visit the exhibition being held in conjunction with the convention. This will be the best display of bonsai to have ever been held in Victoria with trees being hand picked from bonsai enthusiasts from around the state. That’s enough from me, I hope to see you on Sunday for another enjoyable day. Paul

June Meeting

A few projects worked . Members made muck. Muck ingredients. Equal parts of old powdery cow manure, moist clay and sphagnum moss. The cow manure was sieved, and then the ingredients were kneaded together. (Store in an airtight container till needed.) Muck is used when making built up styles of Seikei or rock settings, some additional type of soil that is stickier and firmer is necessary to keep the soil around the root systems of trees and to make a retaining edge. It keeps the soil from falling away from the tree’s roots and also giving some nourishment to the tree. Helen used the muck to make retaining walls on her hebel “stone”. Three juniperus lutchuensis were planted in cavities carved in the ‘rock’. Trevor carved the hebel “stone” at a club workshop day in 2016. It was covered in yoghurt and left to age and mellow. Matching Trees to Pots Trevor spoke about matching trees to pots. The pot holds the soil and water and must complement the tree. It represents the earth. “The position of the tree in nature determines the type of pot for it as a bonsai.” The higher the elevation where the tree grows, earthenware, crescent pots, unglazed, subdued glazed, or stone will work best. Coloured glazes can work with deciduous trees. The colour should be chosen to accent the best feature of the tree. The pot colour or design should not stand out more than the tree design. A natural tree will not cascade if it is growing on flat land so a deeper pot must be used to indicate a cliff. A weeping style can be planted in almost any round or oval pot. Chart 1. From Naka…trees growing in nature. Chart 2. Collected styles of trees. Trevor used three of his favourite bonsai books as references. “Bonsai Techniques 1 &2” by John Yoshio Naka. “The Beauty of Bonsai,” a guide to displaying and viewing nature’s exquisite sculpture. By Junsun Yamamoto. “The Four Seasons of Bonsai” by Kyuzo Marata
