Hello Members, Spring is in the air. It’s amazing what a few millimetres of rain will do to the garden and our bonsai. I was thinking a few plants were slow this year but I think a combination of some heavy late frosts and not much rain was the cause. I should have taken some shots of the frost damaged new buds on many of my maples. It is pleasing to see them pushing out new growth now even though some of it is distorted around the edges. Last month was our yearly road trip to visit a members garden and bonsai collection. We had an very enjoyable day visiting Warren and Liz in Epsom. Kellie had fun playing with the pony's while we caught up over a cupper and lunch. After eating our own lunch and some yummy sandwiches and cake provided by Warren and Liz. It was into the backyard to see the garden, the bonsai and Warren’s shed, where we learned a bit about his beekeeping hobby. Warren is a bit like most of us with a large collection of many species, kept in a fabulous purpose built bonsai house. We then headed off to Goldfields Revegetation nursey for some shopping and celebrity spotting (Millie Ross and Squid see page three). We finished the day at Moongate Bonsai nursery. David A and Shrua have a lot of stock and they are managing to move a lot of inventory by suppling bonsai nurseries in Melbourne and Adelaide. Helen has a piece about Warren and there are plenty of photo’s on page 2 and 3. This month we will have David Rojo give us a talk on Azaleas, David has quite a collection looking at his Facebook posts and I’m sure he’ll have some beautiful examples for us to see on Sunday. Don’t forget the exhibition is only two weeks away, so bring along a tree or two to tidy up ready for display. Have a think about how many trees you will have ready so we can get an idea of space and layout. We also have our sales area so make sure you are sorting out the plants you want to move on. The Club takes a 10% commission on sales so remember this when setting your prices. Please have items tagged with your initials and price so those taking the money can keep track of your sales. That’s enough from me, I hope to see you on Sunday for another enjoyable day. Paul

September Road Trip September A pleasant day was spent at Warren’s home last month. He and his wife Liz were very welcoming. Warren has been growing bonsai for over 30 years, starting in Melbourne where he learnt from Ted Poynton and worked in a bonsai nursery in Blackburn on Saturdays. He then moved to Taradale and is now in Bendigo. He has a variety of trees and likes group plantings. He finds summer in Bendigo a challenge for bonsai plants. Also he finds that he needs deeper pots which are more dense than usual bonsai pots. Dunking pots daily is also another way to cope with the heat and wind. (though time consuming) Warren uses a premium commercial soil (Osmocote brand), and adds diatomite. Warrens’ flowering quince is pictured. Helen
