Hello Members, It’s Spring and just about everything is moving by now. I hope you got your deciduous trees repotted and have the rest of those evergreens and natives planned out over the next few months. I have managed to get about half way through with plenty of Pines, Ceders and evergreens and some natives still to be done. I have put my large gumball liquidambar into a Bonsai pot this year so it will be interesting to see it develop from now on. I should have taken a photo of one of the other trees which certainly needed to be repotted several years ago. Looks like the tree was planted right in the bottom of a large pot and there was about 6 inches of roots above where the nebari was. It will now be a slow journey for the next year as I try and get some decent root growth again after loosing three quarters of them. Last month we had Simon present us with a short talk on Urban Yamadori, he wowed us with some of his finds and explained his techniques on getting about seventy percent survival rates. Helen has put together some notes on the next page. This month we don’t have access to the hall due to the fishing club breakup. So its visit a members garden for some inspiration. Warren is a past president and I’m told has a very nice garden and bonsai collection. I wont advertise his address, so if you are planning on coming along and don’t have it, please send me a text or message on Facebook and I’ll pass on the details. We were also thinking about going out to the native nursery in Strathfieldsaye once we have finished at Warrens? That’s enough from me, I hope to see you on Sunday for another enjoyable day. Paul

August Meeting Simon spoke about his Urban Yamadori bonsai. Simon’s bonsai journey started twenty five years ago when he met David Rojo through a friendship with one of David and Trish’s relations. Several years later, after he became ill, his interest in bonsai took over from his farm activities, dog breeding, training and trialling. His journey has taken him along the road of found and dug trees. Simon explained the method he uses to get success. 1. After digging or finding the tree he soaks it in a seasol bath overnight before potting it. 2. He keeps a reasonable amount of foliage to balance root production and uses an open soil mix to get oxygen to the roots when watering. Simon uses a commercial soil mix and adds Zeolite (Essential Brand kitty litter, not bentonite), and stones or gravel for bigger pots. 3. He grows the trees till they are well established and then works on the taper of the trunk and the top of the tree. 4. In the second year he works on branch construction and ramification. 5. With this method he has a seventy percent success rate. Simon brought trees that he has been working on, some for several years, namely gardenia, smoke bush, lavender, plums, privet box leaf privet, a large azalea, all in various stages of development. He noted that dug trees often denoted the style in which that tree should be grown. Also that native plants do not like root disturbance and need extra care when digging, and also need some foliage left on. Thanks for an interesting demonstration Simon.
