FIRST MEANS OF DIAGNOSIS FORABNORMAL UTERINE BLEEDING
Doctor Steven R. Goldstein, an abnormal uterine bleeding specialist in NYC, is considered one of the nation’s top doctors in gynecology. His ground breaking research has had a significant impact on the way Gynecology is practiced, and much of his research adopted as the standard of care by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
A frequent complaint of women visiting their gynecologist is abnormal bleeding. Unfortunately, many of these women are told they need a Dilation and Curettage (D&C) to find the cause of their abnormal bleeding. A D&C involves dilation of the cervix and then scraping of the endometriallining of the uterus. This is a painful, costly procedure with associated risks and requires anaesthesia. Even worse is the fact that three fourths of these operations turn up nothing and turn out to be totally unnecessary. Furthermore, many women fear cancer from this abnormal bleeding. Unfortunately, physicians not up to date with the latest research and standard of care continue to use this procedure as the FIRST means of diagnosis.
A far better standard of care for the first means of diagnosing abnormal uterine bleeding is painless transvaginal ultrasounds (Vaginal Sonograms) and Sonohysterograpy with saline infusion. Both of these procedures are performed in the office in a few minutes and are without anaesthesia
Abnormal uterine bleeding can occur for many reasons - uterine polyps, fibroids,
miscarriage, the onset of menopause, hormonal imbalances or even cancer. Using the clear, high-resolution images provided by non-invasive Sonohysterography or Vaginal Sonograms, Dr Goldstein is able to isolate the cause of the abnormal uterine bleeding.
For instance, examination of the high-resolution images of the uterine lining may show that the bleeding is due to a hormonal imbalance. Without progesterone, unopposed estrogen can cause heavy, spotty bleeding.
Abnormal bleeding may also occur from cancer or hyperplasia (pre cancer). Even in this case, vaginal probe ultrasounds and fluid enhanced Sonohysterography can eliminate the need for almost all diagnostic D&C’s and the pain, cost and risks associated with them.
Dr Goldstein is also a Gynecologist for Heavy Bleeding in NYC. Using the same Transvaginal Ultrasounds and Sonohysterograms as a first means of diagnosis, Dr Goldstein is able to diagnose the cause of heavy bleeding or heavy periods (menorrhagia). Dr Goldstein was recently awarded the Ian Donald Gold Medal Award from the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology for the way he “has changed the way ultrasound is practiced through research or innovation”.
So if you are a woman suffering from any abnormal uterine bleeding, heavy periods, or other heavy bleeding, know that the first means of diagnosis should be a painless transvaginal ultrasound or Sonohysterogram and not a Dilation and Curettage (D&C).
If you are a woman suffering from abnormal uterine bleeding or heavy periods (menorrhagia), other heavy bleeding accompanied by pelvic pain, a consultation with Dr Steven R. Goldstein, a leading gynecologist in NYC may be in order.
