Ikat is a resist dye technique in which yarns are measured and meticulously bound with string to form a pattern before being dyed. The yarns are unbound, loomed in specific order, and woven to reveal amazingly detailed designs. The exhibition will show a wide range of ikat pieces from locations such as Indonesia, India, Uzbekistan, Japan and Guatemala.
A Catalog of Difference, by guest curator Andrew Lucia, explores aesthetic patterns generated within man-made and natural environments. Through models and prints, this exhibition shows how ambient light can make structures look and feel different.
Northrop was built on the site of the former University of MN medicinal plant gardens. This brief survey of the past, present, and future of plant-based medicine in Minnesota will curated by Lisa Aston P hilander, College of Biological Sciences Conservatory. The exhibition will feature plants from each of the Conservatory‘s biomes representing medicinals common to local indigenous and immigrant cultures.

Displaying 40 objects from the Goldstein Museum of Design’s collection does not begin to tell the whole story. In fact, the exhibited objects represent only about 1/10th of a percent of the 34,000+ objects catalogued, housed, and cared for by GMD. This select group of objects exemplify the vision and perseverance of those integral to GMD’s formation, including Natalja Hurley Klingel, Gertrude Esteros, Keith MacFarland, Joanne Eicher, Margot Siegel, Gloria Hogan, Vandora Linck, Tim Blade, Marilyn Delong, and, of course, Harriet and Vetta Goldstein. Since its 1976 opening, GMD staff and volunteers have collected thousands of objects from over 1000 donors, and curated over 200 exhibitions.
You may think that the pieces exhibited in Seeing 40/40 were chosen for their good looks alone. But GMD’s guest writers go beyond visual appeal to skillfully reveal complex personalities, exposing each object’s smarts, savvy, and wit. Design has the unique ability to be simultaneously part of one’s everyday experience, and highly evocative of a specific time and place. Join us in reflecting on how design solves complicated issues, and unscrambles daily dilemmas in wondrous ways.

Students create GMD-inspired spot Illustrations College of Design instructor John Owens has initiated many thoughtful collaborations with the Goldstein Museum of Design. This past spring, students in his 3311/5311 Illustration class were asked to create a spot illustration for GMD. As defined by Owens, spot illustrations are standalone images that can be used in multiple ways. They need to be visually powerful in both small and large scale formats, as they can be applied to anything from a website to a banner. Owens is careful to distinguish between a logo and a spot illustration; a logo is a highly recognizable symbol that creates immediate association with an organization or company, whereas a spot illustration evokes the mission, impact, and spirit of an organization. After listening to a presentation about GMD’s evolution, students were charged with creating a workbook of preliminary ideas. To complicate an already difficult project, students were asked to avoid things like an overly historicized image or sole focus on any one type of collection object. During the first review, students were guided in selecting a direction for their finished illustration. The five pictured here point to the great variety of designs that can come out of a single classroom.
