A Catalog of Difference, by guest curator Andrew Lucia, explores aesthetic patterns generated within man-made and natural environments. Through models and prints, this exhibition reframes our understanding of material and space through information rather than geometry with a focus on the structure of ambient light.

HAPPY 40TH ANNIVERSARY Happy Anniversary! GMD celebrates 40 years of service in 2016! GMD was named after Harriet & Vetta Goldstein, UMN design professors who sparked America’s demand for good design. In 1976, when the Goldstein Gallery was dedicated, it was envisioned as a welcoming destination, presenting accessible programs to explore design around the world that connects us as people. Today, donations such as yours maintain this proud mission as well as enable online visitors to safely view fragile items electronically through the digital collection catalog. Be sure to check our website for our celebratory activities including: Our Annual Benefit, A Bracket Competition, our 40th Anniversary Book, a Student Party, and more.

Ladakh: A Spirit of Place

Jan HG

Nestled on the highest plateau of the Himalayas in Northern India, Ladakh represents a rich tapestry of many cultures because it was once a pivotal point of access to the ancient Silk Route. Amidst the majestic topography, and alongside the political and militant urgencies of Kashmir, Ladakh has been rediscovered as a tourist destination. This influx of visitors is accompanied by an aggressive increase in building construction and modern services, which raises deep concerns about cultural preservation. During the summer of 2015, a group of architects, artists, scholars, and engineers traveled to the Himalayas to meet with His Excellency Raja Jigmed W. Namgyal, the King of Ladakh, to discuss issues surrounding the loss of tradition in rapidly modernizing societies. As the region adapts, higher building density, the rise of internet cafes, and the escalation of inner town vehicular traffic threaten to decimate the rich ancient culture of Ladakh. This exhibition provides a window into the beauty of this region’s traditions and the evidential problems brought forth by modernization. 4

Project team members visited places where sex trafficking occurs, helping them identify key design characteristics that enable trafficking. When Places Speak opens up the dialogue about where and when sex trafficking occurs in our own communities. Photographs by Xavier Tavera and Shiraz Mukarram prompt viewers’ awareness about the role design plays in this important social concern. The exhibition also includes information about the range of this problem and policies developed to address it.

Curated by: Tasoulla Hadjiyanni, Associate Professor, Interior Design, College of Design, University of Minnesota Lauren Martin, Director of Research, The Robert J. Jones Urban Research and Outreach-Engagement Center (UROC), University of Minnesota Spring 2016

Produced in partnership with UROC with funding from the Imagine Fund for the Arts Humanities and Design. Support for this exhibition and programs provided by Department of Design, Housing and Apparel, the College of Design, and generous individuals.

EXHIBITIONS: Gallery 241, McNeal Hall, St. Paul Campus

Juvenile sex trafficking happens in places: places where youth are recruited, places where purchasers meet victims, places where law enforcement stops trafficking, and places where victims can recover and heal. In collaboration with the Urban Research and Outreach-Engagement Center (UROC), Associate Professor and guest curator Tasoulla Hadjiyanni approaches this troubling issue through interior design scholarship, pedagogies, and practice.

A Chair for a Chair! In past years it has been customary for GMD’s Advisory Board to purchase a collection object in honor of outgoing Board presidents. Vitra-scale chairs have been the focus of this gift for many years now. While this choice may appear to have been made for the glib relationship between title and object, it represents much deeper appreciation. Chairs have particular appeal, with a cultural history that explores materiality, functionality, and the direct interface between the body and design. Here are examples from GMD’s past three Board Presidents.

BEHIND THE SCENES:

TEAM DIGI GMD’s digitization project has many challenges, which includes working with shiny objects. Ideally the documented object remains the primary focus of the photograph, versus the reflection of the room it’s in. GMD photographer Ellen Skoro works with object preparator Rebekah Njaa to construct a white box that will minimize reflections and provide improved light control for this 1920s era chrome cocktail shaker. After much trial and error, they begin to set up the final shot.

This view illustrates the distance between the object and hidden camera lens. The shot is set up low to the ground to maximize the space between the shaker and the ceiling. In earlier trials, it was clear that at table height, the lights were too overpowering for the shaker.

NOTES FROM THE COLLECTION

The light source is angled upwards to bounce light off the ceiling. Although Ellen was using softboxes to diffuse the lights, they were still creating a problematic highlight on the shaker when pointed down. After some final adjustments, Ellen crouches down to take her photographs.

Despite careful preparations, each final shot requires significant post-production in Photoshop. Obvious reflections have to be cleaned up in a thoughtful manner that avoids a look of overproduction.

Happy 40th Anniversary

Goldstein Museum of Design – our Ruby Anniversary! The Goldstein Museum of Design (GMD) was dedicated as the Goldstein Gallery on October 14, 1976, to honor the innovative teaching of Harriet and Vetta Goldstein. Vetta Goldstein and many of her former students were in attendance. The new storage space and work/study space provided professional care for important teaching collections (including that of the Goldstein’s). The first exhibitions were of student and faculty work in the gallery and selections from the collection in the back window. Although our clothes and music may have changed, GMD’s purpose and mission have not. GMD’s original space – a gallery, a collection storeroom, and a work/study space – illustrates the importance that studying “the real thing” was to educators and students in 1976, a commitment that continues today. GMD continues to foster these two key programs – inspiring students and the design community through free exhibitions and preserving the 34,000 piece design collection for object-based learning. At the heart of our year-long celebration will be 40 objects selected to illustrate the range of the collection. Idea makers, artists, designers, and historians will be invited to explore over 2,500 years of design through connections to these objects. GMD’s curatorial team will select objects that represent the breadth of the collection including apparel, accessories, craft, furniture, textiles, graphic design, and product design. Each item will be paired with an individual who will be invited to write an observation of the object. Join us for our celebration events throughout the year and watch for our 40th birthday party this fall!
