Paul Carter and Peter Trant have much in common. They both love brass-era cars – the ancient vehicles of a century or more ago that have big brass radiators and ALYN EDWARDS headlights. And they’re Classic both incredibly fussy RIDES about doing authentic restoration work. For Paul Carter, a fifth-generation Canadian, his interest could be traced back to a photo of his father and grandparents posing at Stanley Park’s famous hollow tree, sitting in a 1912 Cadillac Vancouver taxi – definitely a brass-era car. Carter has always been fascinated with antique cars, buying his first in 1968. It was a 1912 Model T Ford. He sold that to buy a rare, four-cylinder, 1907 Cadillac. He’s been buying and restoring brass-era cars ever since. Today, his collection includes a very rare 1908 Model G Cadillac four cylinder touring car. It originally came from the legendary Barney Pollard collection in Michigan. Pollard stored away 1,200 vintage cars purchased in the 1930s and hung them in buildings by their front axles to save them from being scrapped during WWII. Retired machine designer Paul Carter works with friend Peter Trant, who trained high school shop teachers at the British Columbia Institute of Technology for 44 years. They have a full machine shop and woodworking facility at Carter’s home in Vancouver’s Southlands district.
