Canada was at war when strategic material rationing started to really impact the automobile industry in 1942. The 1942 model year saw a 44 per cent drop ALYN EDWARDS in civilian automobile Classic production. Shortages RIDES of strategic material including chromium, copper, aluminum and rubber took their toll. A priority list for 1942 was created by a Federal Government agency known as the Motor Vehicle Controller, which decided who could buy a car from the pool of new cars – only about 4,000 vehicles. The controlled price was kept at 1941 levels. Priority was given to people involved with “essential pursuits,” such as food, clothing, shelter and medical. Roy S. Hawes, who operated Hawes Auto Service in Edmonton, was determined to get a new car, so he asked his family doctor to order it for him. The 1942 Plymouth Super Deluxe D23C sedan would turn out to be a highly unusual and rare automobile. It would also be the first and last new car Roy Hawes would ever own. The last of the cars produced in 1942 were known as “Blackout” models with the reduction or elimination of use of strategic materials, chrome being the most visible difference. handles, trunk handles, headlight rims and various other trim parts were made from less strategic metal than chrome. To keep a uniform appearance, all trim was painted whether it was chrome or pot metal. Roy Hawes’ 1942 blackout Dodge Special Deluxe was identical to the Plymouth with the exception of the
grille and name badges. These Dodgebadged cars were sold in Canada along with the larger American built Dodge Custom D-22. The D-23s gave Canadian Dodge dealers a lower-priced model. Continued on Pg. B2
