ThrOUGH CHRISTMAS – Campus Honda is helping local families by collecting non-perishable food donations for the Mustard Seed food bank at its Finlayson Street location. DEC 14 – The Vancouver Island Mustang Association club meets, 7:30 p.m. at Jasmine’s Restaurant. All welcome. DEC 17 – 14th annual Terry van Fleet Memorial Christmas Lights Ride from the Greater Victoria Cycling Coalition, 6 p.m. New night route, approximatey 20km, begins and ends at the Victoria First Church of the Nazarene (4277 Quadra St. near Chatterton Way). Refreshments and door prizes follow at about 8:30 p.m. The ride is free but a $5 donation is encouraged. All bikes must have front and rear lights.

Munich’s Deutsches Museum may be the best place to see the history of the automobile When Karl Benz used his skills as a bicycle mechanic to install a rear engine of his own design in a threewheeled buggy more than 125 years ago, the age of the automobile ALYN EDWARDS was born. German Classic patent number 37435 RIDES was issued for the Benz Patent Motorwagen, the world’s first car. Karl Benz also patented the first motorcycle in 1886/7. It was made of wood with a gasoline engine. It didn’t work very well and Benz went on to pursue four wheel automation rather than two. Unknown to Benz, at the same time, in a village not too far away from the Benz shop, Gottlieb Wilhelm Daimler with chief mechanic William Maybach, was also putting his automobile invention on a German roadway. It was much more of a conventional automobile with four wheels and a fourstroke motor. The world’s first and second automobiles, along with the first motorcycle, are among the ground transportation displays in the Deutsches Museum, a half-hour walk from downtown Munich. Located just beyond the famous Oktoberfest grounds and next to a wonderful beer garden, three massive display buildings with a fourth under construction house this unique collection tracing the history of

motorized land transportation. A massive 1905 Mercedes Benz touring car represents one of the earliest cars manufactured by the famous German car builder. Following along with the history of the automobile is the 1908 Protos that came first in the original New York to Paris Race which saw six cars depart New York City on Feb. 12, 1908 to travel through the U.S, Germany, Italy and France. The 21,278 km journey took five and a half months. Only three cars finished
and this German-built Protos was the first across the finish line. However, because it was penalized for being put on a rail car for part of the journey, the victory went to a Thomas Flyer. The museum features a 1922 Mercedes racing car – the first to use a “compressor” or supercharger to boost the horsepower in the four-cylinder engine from 40 to 65.
