GC SOCCER COMPLEX Location: Far south end of GC Athletic Complex on southeast side of Goshen College campus. Built: 1950’s Capacity: 1,500-2,000 in grandstands Playing Dimensions: 110 yards long, 75 yards wide

On a cold fall night, the noise can be heard over a mile away. Follow the noise and you will find one of the most exciting soccer atmospheres in all of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The Goshen College Soccer Complex has a long history of success having seen 19 Mid-Central College Conference Championships on the men’s side and is a consistent host to

conference and regional tournament contests. The consistent on-the-field success of its teams has contributed to and certainly benefited from a wild and boisterous fan base. Standing from whistle to whistle the Maple Leaf faithful make the Goshen College Soccer Complex the most difficult places to play in the MCC. With chants for every situation, the fans keep opponents and officials on their toes. The outstanding atmosphere would never be possible without the design of the complex. One of the few lighted soccer-specific stadiums in all of the NAIA, the GC Soccer Complex is lit by four oversized light standards with 18 high-watt bulbs on each. Completely covered cement dugouts sit directly in front of the 1,500-2,000 seat grandstands. At the top of the grandstand sits the press box that allows room for media, a radio broadcast team, and statistic crews. It also serves as a modest wind-break for the later season contests. Directly to the south and west of the stadium are three separate practice field, making the Goshen College Soccer Complex ideal for hosting multiple teams and events on the same day. Maple Leaf soccer players also have access to the Roman Gingerich Recreation-Fitness Center. The $7.3 million state-of-the-art facility was built in 1995 and houses a variety of athletic and fitness-related activities.

2009 SEASON PREVIEW

Veteran Squad Looks For Another Postseason Run Maple Leafs Have 11 Seniors On The Roster And Depth Could Be Biggest Strength

GOSHEN, Ind. – The 2009 Goshen College men’s soccer season is already two games in, but it is never too late to take a look at what might be in store for the bulk of the season ahead. Returning from a west coast trip to Oregon at 1-1, head coach Tavi Mounsithiraj feel confident about the season ahead. “We have a very good side,” Mounsithiraj explained. “It was great for us to get out West to see a different style of play. We learned a lot that will help us as we move into conference play.” The 2009 version of the Maple Leafs are a very veteran squad with 11 seniors on the roster. For more, read a positionby-position summary below. DEFENSE Whenever you return an NAIA All American and two-time defending MCC Defensive Player of the Year in the middle of your defense, things are probably looking strong for your backline. The presence of senior Kyle Stiffney along, takes pressure of the rest of the defense as he has the ability to run down mistakes and mark dangerous attackers in the middle. The Maple Leafs also have a plethora of experience on the wings with the return of 5 – MAPLE LEAFS SOCCER

juniors Reuben Stoltzfus and Jordan Delp and sophomores Julian Sider and Anthony Johnson. Sophomore Ryan Troyer, fresh off a four shutout freshman campaign, will be the No. 1 option between the pipes. MIDFIELD The Maple Leafs have become known for their ball control style of play and this year should prove to be no different. Seniors Luke Woodworth, Nick Good, and Mark Herschberger are the basis for one of the most formidable midfields in the country, while talented up-and-comers Afrah Haile, Rick Eigsti, Greg Theissen, Connor Histand, and Charlie Frederick provide depth and versatility to the Leafs lineup. FORWARD Instead of having one go-to option, the Leafs have a number of players who have the ability to find the back of the net. Seniors Scott Wilkinson and Juan Diaz De Leon have the experience of playing in the big game, while sophomores Dan Martin and Alain Chapponniere have outstanding combinations of skill and experience after a year in the Leafs lineup.
