2009 SEASON PREVIEWS
Veteran Goshen Squad Ready For 2009 Season
GOSHEN, Ind. – In collegiate athletic programs, transition usually comes with student-athletes graduating and freshman coming in for their first season of competition. For the 2009 Goshen College women’s tennis team, that transition looked a little different. The Maple Leafs did not graduate a single player from their 2008 roster. While the did add a new crop of first-year players to the roster, the most significant
change was a coaching change. Local instructor Doug Gossman takes the reigns from four-year head coach Sarah Yoder, who resigned to continue her teaching career. Gossman has plenty of experience returning with five of his six everyday singles players back to the lineup, including No. 1 singles player Rachel Lanctot. Lanctot started slow in 2008 as she moved from No. 3 singles, but won her final six singles matches heading into the MCC Tournament. Doubles partner and No. 2 singles player Summer Hasan, senior Hannah Groff, and junior Alyssa Dewing also return as Goshen’s two through four. “They are a great group of girls and have really been working hard,” Gossman said. “I have enjoyed working with them and they will continue to get better.”
Deeper Maple Leafs Team Ready For Next Step
GOSHEN, Ind. – A season ago, the Goshen College men’s tennis team got on a roll at the right time. Six-consecutive victories late in the year propelled the Maple Leafs into the MCC Tournament, where the team placed third. This year’s version of Goshen tennis will have a different look, but 11th-year head coach Stan King is still confident his team has what it takes to compete. “The spirit of the team is very good, 5 – MAPLE LEAFS TENNIS
they are a fairly close-knit group, and they are working very hard to improve,” King explained. “I am optimistic that we have the horses to be even better than last year.” They will have to do so without the services of their No. 1, 4, and 6 singles players from a year ago, but will boast much more depth and consistency, particularly at the bottom of the lineup. “We were a little weak 4-6 last season as far as wins,” King added. “While it might be a bit tougher at the top of the lineup, I am confident we can play better at the bottom.” “Joel King (senior captain and No. 2 singles) is doing a great job leading the guys in conditioning and it is nice to have a guy that is willing to take charge wherever is needed,” added King.
