olfing on Vancouver Island is truly an experience in nature. The superb conditioning of manicured courses in the midst of Vancouver Island’s stunning wilderness is a captivating contrast. Mornings spent sharing fairways with deer are followed by afternoons on patios sharing drinks with friends. Clubhouses that cater to every golfer’s culinary whim grant mesmerizing vistas of the mysterious natural wilds just beyond. Even courses within Island communities seem closer to the wilderness than to civilization. The Island’s reputation as an outstanding golf destination starts with the fact that there are 40-plus courses in the region, all

within a three-hour drive of each other. The year-round mild climate keeps courses open in every season, no matter what the weather is doing in other parts of the country. Not only are the greens awesome, so are all the Island’s post-game activities: everything from whale watching and salmon fishing to luxurious spas, micro-brewery tours, and wineries that welcome visitors with tours and tastings. Farms and orchards offer freshly grown produce from roadside stands. Parks invite exploring with trails leading into cool green forests, past rivers and waterfalls, and to beaches and shorelines.
Then there’s the warmth of Island hospitality at hotels, golf courses, and restaurants, as well as from local Islanders, who are happy to share tips on what to see and where to eat. It’s a genuine friendliness that comes naturally in a place where everyone is welcome! Golf Vancouver Island packages make it easy to discover the region’s must-play courses, all professionally selected to offer a premium experience. The Vancouver Island Golf Trail — the ultimate package — is a one-week trip that showcases the Island’s most beautiful communities and has you golfing a different unforgettable course every day (see page 31). Along the way,
glimpses into the Island lifestyle await, glimpses that bring people here again and again for the golf and frequently to live here part time or year round. All of this together has been drawing golfers to Vancouver Island since the first course was built here over a century ago. Whether you get here by ferry — an amazing voyage between the Mainland and the Island — or by plane, with dazzling aerial views of the Gulf Islands and rocky shorelines, make this the year you golf Vancouver Island! Great golf, outstanding facilities, superb hospitality, a season that never ends — and all that incredible wilderness! That’s golf, Vancouver Island style.

T
o say Victoria is a chip off the old British block isn’t really fair — not anymore, anyway. Sure, there are some wonderful tearooms and doubledecker buses and plenty of pubs, but Victoria has its own style, a unique blend of off-the-charts, West Coast gorgeous and fresh, future-forward energy. In the pubs, for example, locally made craft beer has taken over the taps in many establishments — and there are many. Standard pub fare — fish and chips, burgers, shepherd’s pie, and the like — is anything but standard in most places. In fact, the pub fare here is positively gourmet! While the South Island has long been known for outstanding dining choices, the local trend can no longer be called a trend
when it comes to food — it just is the way it is. Some of the country’s best chefs live here, where they can select from a dizzying abundance of ingredients from the land and the sea to create what can only be considered culinary art. And what goes best with local cuisine? Wines made from Island grapes and ciders made from apples grown in Island orchards. Shopping has also gone local with many independent boutiques and galleries featuring the unique creations of Island designers and artists alongside international names you would expect to find only in a much larger city. The spas, too, have given the world’s finest esthetic products and spa services a distinctive Island twist with salt scrubs

and seaweed wraps. The scenery? It’s as breathtaking as ever, with lush green forests and jagged, rocky shorelines. The air still has that same wonderfully salty freshness and the sun still sparkles off ocean waves. The well-preserved heritage buildings that give downtown Victoria its traditional charm are always beautiful, and the Inner Harbour bustles with life by day and transforms into a glowing, magical place when the sun sets. As for the golf, you’re going to love it.

Close proximity to Victoria is a benefit Randy Frank, General Manager at Olympic View, enjoys. “We’re close to town — about 20 minutes outside of Victoria — so I think just hanging out and relaxing in downtown Victoria is really nice,” he says. “Great restaurants. Great pubs. You can go whale watching. There’s a plethora of things you can do.” If you can tear yourself away from the course, that is. “It’s called Olympic View for a reason,” says Frank, referring to the panoramic mountain views. “It’s quite a unique course in that it’s really West Coast-style, cutting through the rock outcroppings in the forest.” Frank adds that their tagline — Tranquility and Nature — really fits. “You’ll spot lots of wildlife out there, and

because the holes are set off by themselves, you find yourself surrounded by the forest with deer grazing 10 feet away, and it makes for a very peaceful experience,” he says, also pointing out that there are no houses around the golf course, which he says is quite unusual in this day and age of golf courses. Olympic View consistently rates among the top golf courses on Vancouver Island, including a four-star rating in Golf Digest’s Best Places to Play. “It’s a risk-reward golf course,” says Frank. “You can be aggressive or play strategic. It’s up to you.” “If you want to take on the risk, it’s possible to get the ball down close to the green on some of the par fours, but if you want to play it strategically and make sure you stay in play, you can shoot a good score as well.” The signature hole, the 17th, is likely one of the most photographed holes in the area. “It has a 40-foot waterfall as its backdrop,” says Frank. “It’s a 455-yard, par four, and the biggest challenge is keeping your mind on your golf shot, because you kind of lose yourself watching the waterfall.” Olympic View, with its award-winning GBC Golf Academy, is also well known for golf instruction.
“We’re lucky to have some of the best golf offers Canada’s only 36 holes of Nicklaus Design golf. VICTORIA AND THE SOUTH ISLAND “Bear Mountain’s signature hole is number 14 located on the Mountain course,” says Ridout. “It is a wonderful par three with a dramatic backdrop that includes the snowcapped Olympic Mountain range, Strait of Juan De Fuca, and downtown Victoria.” The kidney-shaped green, built on the edge of the mountain, requires a full swing and a resolved nerve, he adds. “Players feel a sense of accomplishment when making the green only then to immediately recognize a need to refocus to make two putts for par,” says Ridout. Fun fact: The hole was not included in the original course layout. Jack Nicklaus felt compelled to construct it due to the spectacular vista views, thus creating a 19th hole originally designed to determine the outcome of a match if tied after 18. “It’s a truly memorable hole,” says Ridout. “And don’t forget to take a few photos before you move to the 15th tee!” When it comes to exploring the Bear Mountain area, Ridout offers some great tips. “Located in Supernatural BC means there is an abundance of natural offerings and more within a short drive from Bear Mountain, from sport fishing, kayaking, and sightseeing to a fantastic world-class cuisine scene,” he says.

That said, you may find everything you could ever want to do and see right within the Bear Mountain Resort Community, including tennis, mountain biking, hiking, recreation, and superb food and beverage options. “We are a true resort community within a short drive of Victoria, the capital city of British Columbia,” says Ridout. Bear Mountain is not only a true golf resort community, but it is also aimed squarely at becoming Canada’s premier
resort community. Highlights over the past year have taken Bear Mountain two big steps closer to that goal. “First was the renovation of our practice facility, something of which we are very proud,” says Ridout. “We offer practice opportunities for all levels of players, including three practice putting greens, a short-game area, and a three-tier practice tee deck.” The second step: the introduction of Bear Mountain’s new Director of Instruction, Robert Ratcliffe, a current Golf Canada National Team Coach. “Robert brings a level of coaching and instruction to Bear Mountain that will greatly benefit those who want to improve their game,” says Ridout. No question about it: Bear Mountain is the perfect destination for a golf getaway!

THE TOP REASON ARBUTUS RIDGE IS SUCH A FAVOURITE IS THE DESIGN OF THE COURSE. “No hole is like another — you use every club in your bag,” says Ingle. “It is an excellent mix of challenge and fairness, with no forced carries except for the par threes.” The signature hole is one of those par threes. “Number 17 features a peninsula green with some elevation drop,” says Ingle. “It’s
all carry and dramatic to watch. The set up makes it exciting, near the end of the round. Whoever is ahead in your group’s side bets will need to hit some solid shots over the last few holes to take the bragging rights to the clubhouse.” Something else that makes this course very attractive to visitors is what surrounds it: several award-winning wineries. “People are often surprised at the quality of these wines that don’t have the marketing budget or distribution as some of the other wineries in B.C.,” says Ingle. “They have won many awards recently for great reasons.” Post-game wine tour anyone?

“Our 4.5 Trip Advisor rating for the golf course and restaurant are among the best in the industry,” says Richard Ingle, General Manager at Arbutus Ridge Golf Club. One of the most notable characteristics of the course is the condition. “Especially the condition of our greens — we believe we’ve found the right balance of speed and receptiveness and have one of the best young superintendents in the country making sure all elements of agronomy are cutting-edge,” says Ingle. “Every year, we tackle items on our Course Master Plan to continuously improve our product for members and guests,” he adds. “The recent facility improvements have been very much appreciated by guests.” The clubhouse, with its gorgeous views, is raved about, as is the service from the staff. “Providing high-level service is not possible unless the team enjoys their work, are motivated to put their best effort forward, and are passionate about their product,” says Ingle. In 2017, Arbutus Ridge was the inaugural winner of the Tourism Vancouver Island Employer of the Year Award. But the top reason Arbutus Ridge is such a favourite is the design of the course.

starring roles on Cowichan menus. Winery and vineyard tours are ravedabout experiences and a wonderful way to see the sights and sample some fine wines and ciders. Distilled beverages have recently been added to the mix at some properties. You can drop in at one or two properties on your own or sign up for a tour of several. While the Cowichan is a big hit with foodies, there are other draws to this
pastoral region. The Cowichan River flows 47 kilometres from Cowichan Lake to Cowichan Bay. It’s a designated B.C. heritage river and a Canadian heritage river, which means it has been recognized for its outstanding natural, cultural, and recreational value. The river’s most famous activity is fly-fishing, a sport that has been luring people with their waders and fly rods for well over a century. And whether you

fish or not, the pathways along the river are perfect for pleasant afternoon strolls. For a stroll with cultural significance, take a Totem Walk in downtown Duncan, known as the “City of Totems” and home to some gorgeous art galleries. A wander through Chemainus reveals the history of this former logging town depicted in 39 colourful murals. If it is retail therapy you crave, Cowichan Bay’s boutiques, some of which are perched over the water on stilts, are sure to delight. To bump your stroll up to an easy hike, check out the Kinsol Trestle, one of the world’s tallest timber rail trestles. And then there’s the ocean. The Cowichan has some of the loveliest marinas on the Island in the pretty little communities of Cowichan Bay, Mill Bay, Maple Bay, and Genoa Bay. Saltwater fishing, kayaking, paddle boarding, wildlife watching tours, diving, and sailing are all on the activity menu in this outdoor recreation paradise. For golfers, this means you have plenty of great options before and after your game.
COWICHAN GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB
Located in Duncan, the area’s largest community, the Cowichan Golf and Country Club has been at this location overlooking the waters of Cowichan Bay since 1947, when legendary architect A.V. Macan designed one of the finest nine-hole courses on the Island. It expanded to 18 holes in 1985 and meanders through the
valley, offering a picturesque mix of meadow and tree-lined holes. At 6,189 yards, Cowichan isn’t particularly long from the tips, but don’t let that fool you into a sense of complacency, as the tight fairways and fast, undulating greens will come to haunt you. “It’s a very walkable course but a challenging test of golf, with small, fast greens,” says Head Pro, Norm Jackson, Stormin’ Norm, as he is locally known.
“IT’S A VERY WALKABLE COURSE BUT A CHALLENGING TEST OF GOLF, WITH SMALL, FAST GREENS.” “It’s friendly, affordable golf,” he says, adding that all the competitors in the 2015 Golf British Columbia Women’s Mid-Senior Amateur enjoyed the course immensely. A good example of Cowichan’s enjoyable challenge is the 10th, a par-four dogleg left. Trees block out the green, so the play is a sensible iron shot off the tee. The approach is downhill into a slick green that is bounded by bunkers front, left, and back. You need to remember to spin it on the green but keep the ball beneath the hole. That’s just a warm up for the 11th. “Our signature hole is hole number 11, and

it is probably one of the most challenging holes on Vancouver Island,” says Jackson. “It is a long 404-yard, uphill par four with the second shot over water to a narrow sloping green. If you don’t hit the perfect tee shot, it is a gamble to go for the green in two shots.” “Sometimes laying up your second shot is a smart play,” he adds. Norm’s tip for playing Cowichan Golf? “Our greens all break to Cowichan Bay, and when in doubt, hit to the middle of the greens so you don’t short side yourself.” Jackson’s got one more tip: “The area’s wineries are a must see: award-winning wines and culinary extravaganza.” Beautiful scenery, challenging holes, excellent service, a great clubhouse, and wineries close by — all the right ingredients for a terrific day of golf.

Close to the heart of the Island but away from the bustle of the city, one visit to Fairwinds and you’ll understand why so many have chosen to live here. Whether it be a passion for golfing or boating, fishing or nature hikes, fitness and fun or quiet evenings with family and friends, Fairwinds is truly a place to live with passion.
LANDON SVEINSON
Standerwick’s pro tip relates to the fact that the course, while not long in length, is a good challenge for all levels. “Using shorter clubs off the tee and giving up some distance to improve your accuracy will also improve your score,” he says. And he has one more tip, one you’ll appreciate after the game: “There is worldclass fishing just off-shore in and around the Winchelsea Islands.” Many exciting plans are in the works for the Fairwinds community, beginning with the redevelopment of Fairwinds Landing, a 40,000-square-foot waterfront building that will feature convenience shopping, a café, an oceanfront restaurant/lounge, residential rental units, and professional offices and more. Adjacent to the 350-berth Fairwinds Marina, visitors will be able to shop, dine, and enjoy the panoramic water and nature views of Fairwinds’ beautifully natural landscape. Additionally, The Westerly, which is now under construction, offers a limited collection of 39 spacious suites just steps from the Marina and Landing. This boutique collection of one- and two-bedroom homes will feature spacious patios, sophisticated interiors, and expansive views and will be surrounded by the array of amenities that Fairwinds has to offer.

PHEASANT GLEN GOLF RESORT
Qualicum Beach is one of the most charming communities on Vancouver Island. Art galleries and studios, boutiques, cafés, and bistros line streets bordered by flower baskets and boxes. The town’s beach has been named one of the best in Canada and is known for shallow water that gets deeper gradually and warms up quickly on
hot summer days. Some days, the water temperature along the shore heats up to 20˚C/70˚F. The golf here is as beautiful as the beach. Pheasant Glen Golf Resort is a 6,928-yard course devoted solely to great golf in a natural setting. “Pheasant Glen is walkable through nature — there are no houses lining the fairways,” says Gord Melissa, Manager and Head Professional at Pheasant Glen. Melissa adds that golfers love Pheasant Glen’s conditioning of lush fairways and fast greens, and the staff that create a friendly and happy environment. The front nine winds through high grass, meadows, and creeks, all framed by the peak of Mount Arrowsmith. The back nine zigzags through a heavy stretch of Douglas fir and features a finishing punch that may be the most memorable in the province. The 16th hole is a narrow, 520-yard par five that dares big hitters to try for the green in two. Go too far and the ball splashes down into the hazard that wraps around the back of the hole. The 17th is a 427-yard par four with water squeezing the fairway on both sides of the landing zone. The 18th measures 582 yards from the tournament tees, and after giving it all you’ve got from the tee and fairway, it

demands accuracy with your approach to stay out of the water and bunker left and bunker right. A proven championship course, Pheasant Glen has a list of events to its credit, most recently the 2016 BC Amateur Championship and the 2018 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship. In 2020, Pheasant Glen will be hosting the Canadian Senior Men’s Championship. Pheasant Glen has a great Junior Academy, which currently offers four programs, including a credit course for high school students. “The Elite Group Program is a threetiered program providing coaching for juniors entering into competition and who are seeking a future in golf, whether it be a scholarship, professional golf, or golf business,” says Melissa. The fourth Junior Academy program, the School of Golf, sees high school students enjoy instruction three days a week during their PE block. “We have a 20-seat shuttle bus that shuttles them to and from school,” says Melissa. “Students get golf instruction, membership at Pheasant Glen, and credits towards graduation.” No matter what level of play you are at, Pheasant Glen is a must-golf course on a Vancouver Island golf adventure.
EAGLECREST GOLF CLUB
Established in 1971, Eaglecrest Golf Club in Qualicum Beach is one of the oldest courses in Vancouver Island’s beautiful Oceanside region. This challenging, superbly maintained, semi-private, 18-hole course is renowned for its exceptional customer service, scenic beauty, and classic atmosphere. “Eaglecrest has a wonderful traditional feel exuded by its staff, members, and the community,” says Cory Betz, Head Golf Professional at Eaglecrest. You’ll notice that feel out on the course, too. Betz says the “classic country clubstyle layout” is what people love the most about Eaglecrest. “Eaglecrest’s true value comes with its approach shots,” he says. “Firstly, one must take what the course gives you off the tee, and regardless of the tee box you’ve chosen, the ball needs to be placed in the same location on the fairway.” It’s not a course you want to attack off the tee. Once the ball is placed appropriately in the fairway, this where the fun begins. The layout deftly combines a variety of different elements to create a uniquely challenging course with different styles of greens throughout the course — five classic-style crowned greens left from the original nine-
hole course, six modern tiered-style greens, and seven larger sweeping, rolling greens. “This provides unlimited pin locations and makes the approach shot value so great here at Eaglecrest,” says Betz, adding with a smile, “Happy flag hunting.” The reward for meeting Eaglecrest’s challenges is equally spectacular. “People love our patio, and there is no better place to be on a beautiful summer afternoon or evening,” he says. “It overlooks the course with its abundance of wildlife.” It’s also the perfect spot to enjoy peaceful Island time with a mug of craft beer or glass of Island wine. While you are in the area, you’ll find all kinds of wonderful ways to spend your time between rounds: spas, mountain biking, and festivals. “And don’t forget the kayaking, caving, hiking, paddle boarding, beaches, old growth forests, and car shows,” says Betz. The latest news coming from Eaglecrest is very exciting. In the fall of 2017, the course was sold to a group led by Lisa Lui. After a year of analyzing the course and the business, Eaglecrest is now moving forward with a number of capital projects. The future looks bright — and beautiful! As they say at Eaglecrest, it’s a special place in a unique location.

DESTINATION CAMPBELL RIVER
T
he first thing that strikes anyone about the North Island is the wilderness. The magnificent forests, mountains, glaciers, and coastline seem endless. This is the location of Strathcona Provincial Park, B.C.’s oldest park, encompassing 231,434 hectares of wilderness, including six of the seven highest peaks on Vancouver Island. Adventures range from whale and bear watching and guided marine and aerial tours, to snorkelling with salmon, kayaking among the Islands, skiing the slopes of Mount Washington, hiking through forests and up glaciers, mountain biking and cycling, and diving at some of the best cold-water dive sites in the world. For well over a century, fishing has topped the list of adventures here. According to legend, the waterway between Campbell River and Quadra Island was once so bountiful that it could be crossed by walking on the backs of the salmon. These days, boats are preferred for getting out on the water and a fleet of charters is ready to take you out to where the fishing is best. If you really want to explore the remote wilderness, check out a floatplane charter. The North Island is also a destination for Indigenous culture. Totems, petroglyphs, and artwork can be found in communities throughout the region, including at Quadra Island’s Nuyumbalees Cultural Centre and in museums and art galleries in Campbell River and Courtenay. After a day on the golf course or exploring the wilderness, creature comforts await in the many communities scattered throughout the region: luxurious spas, arts and cultural experiences, and fine wine and food, most likely grown or raised right here in this rich agricultural heartland. Chefs love it here because so much of what they serve in their dining rooms comes from local land and water: fresh produce, farm-raised meats, justcaught fish and seafood, handcrafted cheese, and freshly baked bread. The region is also gaining a reputation for wine and spirits. Local wineries, distilleries, and craft breweries make wonderful products that pair beautifully with the delectable dishes the area’s star chefs create from local ingredients. Farm markets and farm tours are also very popular ways to see the sights and sample the region’s flavours.

CROWN ISLE RESORT AND GOLF COMMUNITY
The scenic Comox Glacier and the Beaufort Mountains provide a stunning backdrop to the course at Crown Isle Resort. Just 30 minutes away, Mount Washington Alpine Resort beckons, reminding golfers that, in the winter months, they can split the day’s activities between golfing and skiing. Alternatively, the ever-present Pacific offers fishing, kayaking, and sailing as options.
“We have plenty of things to do in our valley: fishing, hiking in the forest and along our streams and rivers,” says Rod Prieto, Director of Golf at Crown Isle. “We also have numerous wineries nearby where our guests can do wine tastings, have lunch, and take their favourite bottle of wine home.” The course, designed by Graham Cooke and Associates, is as beautiful as its surroundings: lush green fairways, lakes, glacier views, and abundant wildlife, including bald eagles and deer. “Our members and guests love the beauty of our course,” says Prieto, noting that their maintenance crew works tirelessly to keep Crown Isle in top shape. Prieto adds that the course is also loved for its challenge and for its fairness. “Our course has generous fairways and larger greens, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get into trouble,” he says. “My tip is to play smart. You don’t always need to hit driver off the tee and don’t always need to fire at all the pins. Take the club that will get you into the widest part of the fairway. The holes are tucked into tight locations, so aim for the centre, take your par, and move on to the next hole.” The 14th hole, formerly a fairly straightforward par four, was updated in 2018 with the addition of a creek and small lake on the left side of the fairway. the proper club off the tee to avoid the water and reach the green in regulation. Crown Isle ends with its signature 18th, a 423-yard monster with bunkers both off the tee and guarding the front of an elevated green. While Crown Isle has always impressed amateur golfers, the PGA is also impressed. “We have recently agreed to a three-year term to host the PGA Tour Canada Canadian Qualifier,” says Prieto. “It’s a four-round tournament each May, where aspiring professionals attempt to play their way onto the PGA Tour Canada.” The Crown Isle Clubhouse is a dazzling 48,000-square-foot West Coast structure, offering sweeping views and top amenities, including a bar and grill and conference and meeting space. Nine villa buildings offer scenic accommodation nestled in the trees along the first fairway. It’s no wonder so many visiting golfers, after a day on the greens, wander over to the Crown Isle real estate office to inquire about available properties.

The course itself, designed by Les Furber and opened in 1990, has gained international attention as a renowned championship golf course. It was named the 43rd Best Public Course in Canada by Score Golf in 2015 and rated the 2014 number one public course in the province by the PGA of B.C. CPGA Head Professional Steven MacPherson says Storey Creek is distinctive from other Island courses. “Each of our holes winds through thick forest,” he says. “Golfers don’t see other holes or other groups of golfers. They are at one with nature. No homes. No highways. No sound.” Instead, you may see bald eagles, herds of deer, beavers, and black bears during your round. “Each of our holes has its own unique
shape. No two present similar challenges,” says MacPherson. “The holes twist and turn with creeks meandering across and alongside fairways.” While the course has a few forgiving par threes, as well as awe-inspiring par fives, the signature hole is the 12th — and it is also the hardest hole. A long dog-leg right par five, the 12th has a water hazard down the right side beginning at the tee and continuing until the 100-yard marker, forcing the slicer to play strategically, says MacPherson. It’s challenging, yes, but very exciting. “Many of our golfers play a second round in the afternoon, such is their enjoyment of the morning round.” After your game — or two — at this wilderness paradise, there is no shortage of things to do. “Campbell River describes itself as the Salmon Capital of the World,” says MacPherson. “Visitors to Storey Creek often choose fishing and whale and grizzly bear charters from myriad specialists located in the city and divide their week between golf and these ocean adventures.” This year, Storey Creek is hosting a mixed open for couples in May, a ladies’ open in late July, and a men’s open in September. Yet more great reasons to go north to Storey Creek.

DISCOVER VANCOUVER ISLAND
Beautiful Quadra Island is just 10 minutes by ferry from Campbell River, but it feels like a whole new world. It’s a laid-back Island, known for its rich history, friendly people, and natural beauty. Jason Tchir, General Manager and Golf Professional at the Quadra Island Golf Club, says the natural beauty is a big draw for golfers. In fact, the setting gets rave reviews.

“People love the setting. It’s a really nice, isolated setting. You’re out with nature and your golf clubs, and that’s about it,” he says. “You don’t even see too many other golfers, because each hole is pretty isolated from the others.” Quadra Island Golf Club makes it easy, too, with a free shuttle between the golf course and the ferry terminal, resorts, and marina. But while getting to the greens is easy, this nine-hole course is “a really good nine holes,” says Tchir.
“A lot of people are surprised at how serious a challenge and tough of a test it is just doing nine holes. They come off the course, saying, ‘Wow! That’s a serious golf course.’” A round finishes with the signature hole. “It’s our par-three finisher, and it’s a good 100-yard carry over a pretty large pond,” says Tchir, adding that the ninth is very picturesque. “Really, all the holes are beautiful, and they’re all unique,” he says. “Personally, I love the second hole, a great par four.” His advice for golfers: keep your ball in play. “I know it’s cliché,” he laughs. “But at our golf course, definitely, the most important thing is to keep your ball, keep it in play, keep it in the middle. Our trees are unforgiving.” Though underbrush gets cleared away every winter, the forest is thick: this is golfing as natural as it gets. “If you are not hitting in the middle, you’ll definitely have a long day, so club down where it’s safe: in the centre of the fairways.” While Quadra Island is a popular day trip, it’s also a great place to kick back for a couple days. “Quadra’s got some really nice resorts. The water access is great, and there are

some beautiful areas, like Rebecca Spit Park, and lots of hiking trails, whale watching tours, fishing adventures, the Nuyumbalees Cultural Centre,” says Tchir. A peaceful setting, fantastic golf, and all that nature. “Kind of endless opportunities in those respects,” he says.
Approachable, innovative, visionary, futuristic… this is how the Campbell River Golf and Country Club is being described since it opened on August 9, 2018. As Jason Deegan of Golf Advisor, says, “If golf is to be more inclusive — which is the future of the game — it will need more facilities like Campbell River.” Formerly the Sequoia Springs Golf Course, under new ownership, every hole was remodelled in 2017-18. Mature trees were kept, but otherwise, the 18-hole, 6,141-yard course is completely new. Golfers are raving about it. “Reviews have all been about the amazing condition of the course,” says Kyle Stoudt, Head Professional. “The fairways are pure and lush and the greens are smooth and fast with enough undulation to make any ‘routine’ twoputt a challenge.”
SCOTT BALLHORN

Enjoy food and drinks and hit balls late into the night at the Velocity Lounge.
Looking at the yardage, you may think it will be an easy round. “Although we may have a few hundred less yards than the traditional golf course, we still require accurate tee shots and approaches,” he says. “The bunkers have been placed to penalize errant shots, and our greens are set up so you have to be on the correct level with the pin or face a very difficult putt.” The signature hole is the 17th. “The double dog-leg, par five stretches out to over 610 yards from the back tees and has
a creek crossing the fairway right about the area you would typically lay up to with your second shot,” says Stoudt. “You must decide whether you want to take the risk and try to get close to the green or lay back and have a long approach from behind the creek, all while weaving your way down through the treelined fairway.” Innovation goes beyond the exceptional on-course experience: this is a destination, leading a new era in golf using technology and world-class facilities to attract new golfers. The Velocity Lounge and Driving Range is a highlight, where you can enjoy a fun-first experience in a casual group setting, order food and drinks, and hit golf balls late into the night using TopTracer technology. “We have already seen the game introduced to hundreds of ‘non-golfers’ and it has led to increased interest in learning more about the game.” Other reasons to visit include hiking, biking, whale and wildlife watching, and trips to Quadra Island. “And with Mount Washington only 45 minutes away, we are one of the only places you can ski and golf in the same day during the winter,” he says. “We are lucky to be in such an amazing spot with so much to do.” You’ll want to extend your trip an extra day or two.
