G

olfing on Vancouver Island is truly an experience in nature. The superb conditioning of manicured courses in the midst of Vancouver Island’s stunning wilderness is a captivating contrast. Mornings spent sharing fairways with deer are followed by afternoons on patios sharing drinks with friends. Clubhouses that cater to every golfer’s culinary whim grant mesmerizing vistas of the mysterious natural wilds just beyond. Even courses within Island communities seem closer to the wilderness than to civilization. The Island’s reputation as an outstanding golf destination starts with the fact that there are 40-plus courses in the region, all within a three-hour drive of each other. The mild year-round climate keeps courses open in every season, no matter what the weather is doing in other parts of the country. Not only are the greens superb, so are all the Island’s post-game activities: everything from whale watching and salmon fishing to luxurious spas, micro-brewery tours, and wineries and distilleries that welcome visitors with tours and tastings. Farms and orchards offer freshly grown produce from roadside stands. Parks invite exploring along trails, leading to cool green forests, past rivers and waterfalls, and beaches and shorelines. Then there’s the warmth of Island hospitality at hotels, golf courses, and restaurants, as well as from local Islanders, who are happy to share tips on what to see and where to eat. It’s a genuine friendliness that comes naturally in a place where everyone is welcome! Golf Vancouver Island packages make it easy to discover the region’s must-play courses, all professionally selected to offer a premium experience. The Vancouver Island Golf Trail — the ultimate package — is a one-week trip that showcases the Island’s most beautiful communities and has you golfing a different unforgettable course every day (see page 21). Along the way, glimpses into the Island lifestyle await. These peeks into Island life bring people here again and again for the golf — and frequently to live here, part-time or year-round. All of this together has been drawing golfers to Vancouver Island since the first course was built here over a century ago. Whether you get here by ferry — an amazing voyage between the Mainland and the Island — or by plane, with dazzling aerial views of the Gulf Islands and rocky shorelines, make this the year you golf Vancouver Island! Great golf, outstanding facilities, superb hospitality, a season that never ends — and all that incredible wilderness! That’s golf, Vancouver Island style. 5

COWICHAN SIP OF THE GOLF TRAIL

Wineries • Culinary Experiences Indigenous Culture The totems in Duncan are world-famous examples of authentic First Nations art.

T

he drive from Victoria into the Cowichan is a descent from the forests and mountains of the Malahat into rolling farmland. The Cowichan, which gets its name from a First Nations word that roughly means “warm land,” is a destination for uber-talented chefs and culinary explorers. Ultra-fresh fish and seafood, just-picked fruit and vegetables, handcrafted 12

cheese, and award-winning wines play starring roles on Cowichan menus. Winery and vineyard tours are ravedabout experiences and a wonderful way to see the sights and sample some fine wines and ciders. Distilled beverages have recently been added to the mix at some properties. You can drop in at one or two properties on your own or sign up for a tour of several.

While the Cowichan is a big hit with foodies, there are other draws to this pastoral region. The Cowichan River flows 47 kilometres from Cowichan Lake to Cowichan Bay. It’s a designated BC heritage river and a Canadian heritage river, which means it has been recognized for its outstanding natural, cultural, and recreational value. The river’s most famous

GOLFVANCOUVERISLAND.TRAVEL

activity is fly-fishing, a sport that has been luring people with their waders and fly rods for well over a century. And whether you fish or not, the pathways along the river are perfect for pleasant afternoon strolls. For a stroll with cultural significance, take a Totem Walk in downtown Duncan, known as the “City of Totems” and home to some gorgeous art galleries and boutiques. A wander through Chemainus reveals the history of this former logging town depicted in 39 colourful murals. If it is retail therapy you crave, Cowichan Bay’s shops, some of which are perched over the water on stilts, are sure to delight. To bump your stroll up to an easy hike, check out the Kinsol Trestle, one of the world’s tallest timber rail trestles. Then there’s the ocean. The Cowichan has some of the loveliest marinas on the Island in the pretty little communities of Cowichan Bay, Mill Bay, Maple Bay, and Genoa Bay. Saltwater fishing, kayaking, paddle boarding, watching tours, diving, and sailing are all on the activity menu in this outdoor recreation paradise. For golfers, this means you have plenty of great options before and after your game.

ARBUTUS RIDGE GOLF CLUB Just 25 minutes from the outskirts of Victoria, Arbutus Ridge Golf Club in Cobble Hill sits above the Satellite Channel and the Southern Gulf Islands and looks out to the snow-capped peak of Mount Baker. Designed by Bill Robinson, the course opened in 1987 and has since become known as one of the most scenic in Canada — and a top pick among golfers. “Our 4.5 Tripadvisor rating for the golf course and restaurant are among the best in the industry,” says Andrew Hajer, Head Professional at Arbutus Ridge Golf Club. One of the most notable characteristics of the course is the condition. “Especially the condition of our greens — we believe we’ve found the right balance of speed and receptiveness and have one

of the best superintendents in the country making sure all elements of agronomy are cutting-edge,” says Hajer. The clubhouse, with its gorgeous views, is raved about, as is the service from the staff. “What really sets us apart is our team. From the moment you pull onto the property, you will feel welcomed and taken care of.” In 2017, Arbutus Ridge was the inaugural winner of the Tourism Vancouver Island Employer of the Year Award. But the top reason Arbutus Ridge is such a favourite is the design of the course. “The golf course has a great mix of holes. The course is not too difficult off the tee box, but the challenge lies as you get closer to the hole. Our green complexes are simply fantastic,” says Hajer. “Number 17, our signature hole, features a peninsula green with some elevation drop,” he says. “It’s all carry and dramatic to watch. The set up makes it exciting near the end of the round. You will need to hit some solid shots over the last few holes to take the bragging rights to the clubhouse.” Something else that makes this course very attractive to visitors is the après golf in the Satellite Bar and Grille. "People love to enjoy the wonderful views from the restaurant or on the patio,” says Hajer. “They love our beer selection and what we think is the best burger in the Cowichan Valley.”

COWICHAN GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB Located in Duncan, the area’s largest community, the Cowichan Golf and Country Club has been at this location overlooking the waters of Cowichan Bay since 1947, when legendary architect A.V. Macan designed one of the finest ninehole courses in the province. It expanded to 18 holes in 1985 and meanders through the valley, offering a picturesque mix of meadow and tree-lined holes. At 6,189 yards, Cowichan isn’t particularly long from the tips, but don’t let that fool you into a sense of complacency, as the tight fairways and fast, undulating greens will come to haunt you. “It’s a very walkable course but a challenging test of golf, with small, fast greens,” says Head Pro, Norm Jackson, Stormin’ Norm, as he is locally known. “It’s friendly, affordable golf,” he says, adding that all the competitors in the 2015 14

14

Golf British Columbia Women’s Mid-Senior Amateur enjoyed the course immensely. A good example of Cowichan’s enjoyable challenge is the 10th, a par-four dogleg left. Trees block out the green, so the play is a sensible iron shot off the tee. The approach is downhill into a slick green that is bounded by bunkers front, left, and back. You need to remember to spin it on the green but keep the ball beneath the hole. That’s just a warm up for the 11th. “Our signature hole is hole number 11, and it is probably one of the most challenging holes on Vancouver Island,” says Jackson. “It is a long 404-yard, uphill par four with the second shot over water to a narrow sloping

green. If you don’t hit the perfect tee shot, it is a gamble to go for the green in two shots.” “Sometimes laying up your second shot is a smart play,” he adds. Norm’s tip for playing Cowichan Golf? “Our greens all break to Cowichan Bay, and when in doubt, hit to the middle of the greens so you don’t short side yourself.” Jackson’s got one more tip: “The area’s wineries are a must see: award-winning wines and culinary extravaganza.” Beautiful scenery, challenging holes, excellent service, a great clubhouse, and wineries close by — all the right ingredients for a terrific day of golf.

hen we cut the ribbon on the Vancouver Island Golf Trail back in 2000, it featured six exceptional courses linked into a vacation package for golfers from nearby: Vancouver, Calgary, and Seattle. And the golfers loved it, calling it a “hidden gem.” Now, 21 years later, the Vancouver Island Golf Trail isn’t a hidden gem anymore — it’s a confirmed “must play” and has become the repeat destination of choice for golfers from across Canada, California, Texas, the southern U.S., and the Pacific Rim. beaches of Parksville Qualicum Beach offer almost 20 kilometres of glorious sand and sun-warmed waters with ample opportunity for well-spaced relaxation and summer fun. But Parksville Qualicum beaches are just as appealing in the cooler months as they are in the heat of July and August. In fact, many vacationers prefer to be here when the summer crowds subside and the beaches are more conducive to quiet contemplation and peaceful strolls. On land, most of the region is included within the Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region, recognized with a UNESCO designation for its unique microclimate and ecosystem of Douglas fir and giant red cedar. For jaw-dropping views of the Strait of Georgia, explore the alpine trails leading to Mount Arrowsmith, Cokely, and Moriarity. No Island experience is complete without a walk in a forest. Milner Gardens and Woodland features 60 acres of woodland with trails leading deep into the old-growth forest. The property also boasts 10 acres of gorgeous gardens surrounding a heritage house with an intriguing history. The Qualicum Beach Heritage Forest is another incredible old-growth forest experience, with mulch trails through 50 acres of rare remnant Coastal Douglas Fir, Western Red Cedar, Hemlock, Grand Fir, and Sitka Spruce, as well as a salmonbearing stream. Opportunities to explore the great outdoors include Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park, which has an accessible pathway and spectacular waterfall views. More waterfalls await in Englishman River Falls Provincial Park, along with hiking trails, a picnic area, and an all-natural pool for swimming. As for the golf, it has been a favourite pastime here since 1913.

PARKSVILLE Qualicum Beach Highlights

Parksville Qualicum Beach is a gorgeous area that includes most of Central Island’s beaches, making it one of most popular vacation destinations on Vancouver Island. Amazing Places: The UNESCO Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Reserve (MABR) is big — 118,593 hectares, with a core area of 3,538 hectares. Amazing Places is a project that showcases areas within the MABR that people can visit and explore, such as Top Bridge Park, Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park, and Cameron Lake, to name just a few. There is even a GeoTour, a real-world outdoor treasure-hunting game that uses a Geocaching app or GPS to find cleverly hidden geocaches. Craft breweries and distilleries: Top off a round of golf with a pint or two of local beer at the local craft breweries. At both Mount Arrowsmith Brewing Company and LoveShack Libations, you can sample smallbatch brews and chat with the pros, then take a growler to go. The region is also home to two very fine distilleries: Bespoke Spirits House and Misguided Spirits.

Exciting attractions: Continue that friendly competition on the golf course with a spin around the track at Fast Time Amusements, where you can drive like a Formula One racer in a European-designed kart on a half-kilometre Naskart track with 35 turns. This fun family attraction also offers axe throwing and archery tag. Coombs: No trip to this region would be complete without a visit to Coombs, a small rural community with a big heart and all kinds of artisan goodies, antiques, and locally made food, as well as the famous goats that graze on the grass roof of the Old Country Market. North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre: This incredible facility is home to more than 60 resident, non-releasable animals, as well as those who will return to the wild. Eagles, owls, black bears, hawks, turtles, ravens, and turkey vultures are just some of the ill, injured, and orphaned creatures rescued and cared for at this beautiful wildlife rehabilitation centre. Horne Lake Caves Provincial Park: One of Vancouver Island’s most popular attractions, this park offers a variety of exciting outdoor options, including family friendly caving and hiking. While access to some areas and tours may be restricted depending on the situation with the pandemic, the park and the trails are open.

Fishing charters and marine adventures: Whether you’re fishing for your dinner or snapping photos of marine wildlife and scenery, an adventure by boat is an experience you won’t want to miss. he first thing that strikes anyone about the North Island is the wilderness — evergreen forests, towering mountains, and accessible shoreline — but it is the warmth of North Island communities within that wilderness that makes a lasting impression.

The North Island is home to Strathcona Provincial Park, which includes six of Vancouver Island’s seven highest peaks, as well as the wild, rugged coastlines of Cape Scott Provincial Park. Adventures in the North Island region include wildlife and cultural excursions,

stunning aerial tours by helicopter or float plane, fishing charters, snorkelling with salmon, kayaking, skiing at Mount Washington, hiking through forests to amazing viewpoints, mountain biking, and cycling. It is also home to some of the best cold-water dive sites in the world.

For well over a century, fishing has topped the list of adventures here. According to legend, the waterway between Campbell River and Quadra Island was once so bountiful that it could be crossed by walking on the backs of the salmon. These days, chartered fishing trips with experienced guides are the best way to get out on the water to where the fishing is best. The North Island’s Indigenous cultural roots are woven into the fabric of each community. Totems, petroglyphs, and oneof-a-kind art can be found in communities throughout the region, including Quadra Island’s Nuyumbalees Cultural Centre, Alert Bay’s U'mista Cultural Centre, and in museums and art galleries in Campbell River and Courtenay. Creature comforts await in the many communities scattered throughout the region: luxurious spas, arts and cultural experiences, and fine wine and food, most likely grown or raised right here in this rich agricultural heartland. Chefs love it here because so much of what they serve in their dining rooms comes from local land and water: fresh produce, farm-raised meats, justcaught fish and seafood, handcrafted cheese, and freshly baked bread. Farm markets, guided farm tours, and cycling tours are also wonderful ways to see the sights and sample the region’s culinary delights. The North Island is also gaining a reputation for wine, spirits, and craft breweries. With speciality small batches, exclusive tasting room offerings, and inhouse-only purchases, these are must stops. Naturally, these local products pair beautifully with local dishes. It all makes for some excellent options to round out your golf vacation. Marine adventures are unforgettable in the North Island.

While the course has a few forgiving par threes, as well as awe-inspiring par fives, the signature hole is the 12th — and it is also the hardest hole. and Driving Range is a highlight, where you can enjoy a fun-first experience in a casual setting, order food and drinks, and hit balls into the night using Toptracer technology. “We have already seen the game introduced to hundreds of ‘non-golfers,’ and it has led to increased interest in learning more about the game.” For those already familiar with the game but ready to pick up a few more skills, the indoor golf academy outfitted with Trackman technology and the world-class 8,000-square-foot practice area are second to none. “We’ve created a space that reflects realistic on-course situations, from a simple bump-and-run to a 60-yard wedge shot, that provide golfers ample opportunity to improve all aspects of their short-game,” says Mounsteven. July 2020 brought the opening of a 2,400-square-foot retail space/golf shop that will appeal to golfers and athletic enthusiasts alike. The new space also features brand-new locker room facilities sure to make your visit all the more comfortable and enjoyable.
