HE Algarve is where the ‘golf holiday’ began many years ago, and it remains one of the most popular golfing destinations in Europe today. We start our journey through Portugal’s most popular golf region with Sir Henry Cotton’s classic championship layout at the impressive Penina Hotel and Golf Resort. This was the first 18-hole course to be built in the Algarve and has hosted no fewer than 10 Portuguese Opens.

The resort is set in a stunning 360-acre estate and boasts two additional courses to Cotton’s design along with a fabulous five-star hotel. Similarly impressive, Dona Filipa Hotel is just 10 minutes from the world-class San Lorenzo course. This has 154 rooms, stunning scenery and amenities galore. Many of the rooms and public areas have been recently refurbished, to further enhance the property. The luxury five-star hotel sits on the Atlantic Ocean and the Vale do Lobo beach. Guests can dine at two restaurants on site, with the ‘Praca’ - a hub of great bars and restaurants - just a wedge away. Situated close by is the superb the San Lorenzo course, which
offers a collection of perfectly manicured greens and fairways that border the region’s scenic lagoons. Originally designed by the American course architect Joseph Lee, this 18-hole layout opened in 1988 and has long been established as an Algarve classic. While much of the course has an inland feel as it winds through the surrounding pine woods, the short 5th treats you to views of the glorious sandy beaches of the south-west coast of Portugal. The Amendoeira Golf Resort also has two brilliant courses, the Faldo and O’Connor Jr, a short drive north west of Albufeira. They are two of the really powerful courses in Portugal with the Englishman’s design regarded as one of the most exacting in the whole of continental Europe. Also available within the Oceanico Resort group are the Pinhal and Laguna layouts. Pinhal was the second course to be built here and was created by Frank Pennink, who was also responsible for designing the Old Course. Laguna was formerly a 27hole layout before one of the loops was used to create the front nine on the Millennium Course. It contains many lakes, which influence play on 11 holes, 79 bunkers and is more exposed than other Vilamoura courses so the wind is more of a consideration.

ILAMOURA is a fantastic base for a trip to the Algarve - and surrounded by stunning courses including Laguna, Pinhal, Millennium, The Old Course & Victoria. Elsewhere, the eighttime consecutive host of the European Seniors Tour Qualifying final, Vale de Pinta golf, is rightly respected - not just for its playability and challenging layout but for outstanding levels of beauty and enjoyment. Inaugurated in 1992, Vale de Pinta has earned its place as one of the best designed courses in Europe. After his success designing Vale de Pinta, Ronald Fream teamed up with the former
world No. 1 Nick Price to create the unique design of Gramacho. With 18 holes and 27 greens, plus numerous different tee points, players are able to enjoy the same course time and time again but always with slightly different challenges. Silves meanwhile sits in a serene spot at the foot of the Monchique mountain, but it’s anything but ‘a walk in the park’. For example, your drive at the opening hole has to flirt with
water hazards on both flanks. This course is for players - low handicaps will find it a serious challenge to come in under par. Most holes offer spectacular mountain views overlooking palm trees and olive groves, while the surrounding cork and citrus farms generate a true feeling of authentic Portuguese golf. The legendary Alto course is the last designed by architect Sir Henry Cotton, and features the 600-metre par 5 known as the ‘Sir Henry Challenge”.

HE Costa del Sol is an obvious choice if you want to enjoy a golfing holiday in the Spanish sunshine - and with good reason. The region stretches from Gibraltar in the south west to Malaga in the east and visitors can choose from an array of perfectly presented courses where water is rarely far from being in play. In fact, there are over 50 courses in this sun-kissed region and many directly

overlook the warm waters of the Alboran Sea, on the other side of which is Morocco and the North African coast. Let’s begin in the Marbella area, which is in the heart of the Costa del Sol and therefore a natural base for your trip. Needless to say, in Marbella glamorous beaches, bars and restaurants are certainly not in short supply and neither are high-quality resorts and courses. Los Arqueros Golf is definitely one to include in any itinerary.
A mixed course situated less than an hour from the Malaga and Gibraltar airports, and only 10 minutes from Marbella, it was the first golf course to be designed by the legendary Seve Ballesteros. It is set among the mountains of the Sierra de Ronda, and has an original layout in beautiful surroundings. Its prime location makes this an ideal destination for a stressfree golfing holiday. Also close to Marbella is El Paraiso, where you’ll need a

El Paraiso boasts generous, easy walking fairways set amongst palms and pines, oleanders and olives with meandering streams and two magnificent lakes. Lisbon Head for the bright lights and great courses of the capital
LTHOUGH the Algarve might be considered Portugal’s standout region for golf, the area around the country’s capital also boasts a collection of outstanding courses. Nearby is Quinta da Marinha, an excellent base for a golf trip west of the capital. The setting is beautiful with the mountains of Sintra on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other. As well as being picturesque, the course is never less than challenging, especially when the wind whips in from the Ocean, which is when things can become very interesting. Another world-class resort in the western Lisbon region is the fantastic Penha Longa.

There are three loops of nine holes to choose from here: the Atlantic Championship, the Atlantic North and the Atlantic South. The Championship is the standout option and also the most difficult. Set among the Sintra foothills, the course snakes through wooded valleys and up to tee boxes and greens set on elevated rocky outcrops. It was back in 1992 that Robert Trent Jones Jnr brought all his skills to bear, creating what is a thrill-seeking golfer’s delight. Moving to the north and west of Portugal’s capital, we come to Bom Sucesso and Praia D’El Rey. Both are considered within the Top 200 courses in Continental Europe, so this is
Quinta da Marinha is never less than challenging certainly an attractive itinerary waiting to be tackled. Set among extensive pine forests and undulating dunes, Praia D’El Rey benefits from spectacular views out to the Atlantic and beyond to the Berlengas Islands. Laid out by the celebrated American architect Cabell B Robinson in 1997, it is complemented by selfcatering apartments and a Marriott hotel on site. The course at Bom Sucesso is a relatively new and impressive track designed by esteemed British architect Donald Steel.
It offers views out over the coastline and to the ocean beyond, with the Obidos Lagoon in the foreground. Also in the Lisbon area are the two championship Aroeira layouts. Set in a pine wood with several lakes - and benefiting from a microclimate that allows all year round golf both courses provide a test. Aroeira I opened in 1973 and was designed by Frank Pennink. Aroreira I plays through mature pines so there is a premium on hitting the narrow fairways. The Donald Steel-designed Aroeira II opened in 2000 and provides a contrast to its neighbour, being wider and flatter with more lakes and bunkers to avoid.

N a beautiful area to the west of Lisbon lies one of Continental Europe’s original venues. Estoril is undoubtedly one of Portugal’s classic courses. It is a relatively short parkland course that has hosted the Portuguese Open on numerous occasions and several amateur events. It sits close to the Atlantic coast and provides great views.

If you’re in need of a real test of your golfing mettle, the 7,300-yard Royal Obidos course is a must play while in Lisbon. The first hole, a generous right handed dogleg, heads north, setting up a spectacular combination of holes overlooking the lagoon (Lagoa de Obidos). The feature hole of the front nine is the 3rd, a 144-metre par 3 off the yellow tees to an island green. The second nine holes overlook the Atlantic Ocean. Six holes meander between an intricate ecosystem of lakes interconnected by cascading streams. The highlight of the back nine is the 18th, a 490-metre par 5 off the yellow tees, with a panoramic view over the back nine, the clubhouse and the ocean beyond. Portugal is the stunning Dolce CampoReal Resort, with its 151 luxurious rooms and suites and equally impressive golf course. Designed by well-known architect Donald Steel, CampoReal is a challenging par-72, 18-hole layout that runs through the hills. Blind shots, steep inclines and wooded valleys create a series of obstacles that will make playing this course unlike any other you’ve encountered before. To the west of Lisbon is Oitavos Dunes, which many consider the best course in the country. Some rate it the best in mainland Europe. Designed by the leading American architect Arthur Hills, it is far removed from the kind of target parkland golf familiar to the Iberian countries, instead offering a wonderful combination of woodland and links-style holes. You will struggle to find a weak hole here and the finish is brilliant and varied with three par 3s and a brace of par 5s all being encountered in the last seven holes. The par-3 9th and 14th are sensational, and an added benefit to a visit to Oitavos Dunes are the pretty towns of Cascais, Estoril and Sintra. Elsewhere, Belas is a championship course which has the Carregueira Mountains in the background, and the Lisbon Club is one of Portugal’s oldest courses, having been founded in 1880.

ITH such a wealth of options elsewhere in Portugal, you could be forgiven for overlooking Porto as a place to base your next golf break, but there are some excellent options around Portugal’s second largest city. The beauty of playing here is that there is something to cater for everybody. THE GREAT GOLF GUIDE 2016 | SPAIN & PORTUGAL ORTH-EAST Spain is home to one of the country’s best layouts, the Stadium Course at PGA Catalunya. As would be expected of a European Tour host bidding for the 2022 Ryder Cup, it is long with tight fairways and undulating greens. PGA Catalunya is also home to the Tour course, which sits in the shadow of its neighbour but should not be ignored. It has wider fairways, shorter holes and a more sympathetic design. It therefore sets up very well for the club golfer. There is however more to golf in the Costa Brava than PGA Catalunya. The Links and Forest courses at Emporda offer contrasting 18-hole tests in the heart of the region. The Links Course is an inland track which has many features commonly found on seaside courses. Meanwhile, the Forest Course is a more classic woodland offering – here you will find more spacious fairways that are flanked by pine trees.
