Ireland Fall in love with wild linksland or manicured parklands
RELAND has everything from rugged links to manicured parklands. Even a mere corner of the country has enough quality links to satisfy a connoisseur. Let’s look, for example, in the west of the country. Lahinch was originally laid out in 1894 by Old Tom Morris and Dr Alister MacKenzie revised the layout in 1927. It was broadly untouched until esteemed modern architect Martin Hawtree modernised the course in 1999. Two of the original Old

“Royal County Down hosts the Irish Open in May” Tom holes remain. The par-5 4th, Klondyke, and the short 5th, The Dell, are both as they were 100 years ago. Blind shots abound and this pair of holes engenders significant post-round debate among visitors and members alike. Nearby, Trump International Golf Links and Hotel Ireland has a Greg Norman-designed course with an extensive dune network that place it high on any list of modern
layouts. The giant dune that forms the backdrop to the par-5 1st is a teaser for what is to follow, a layout set up for the travelling golfer, meaning it is more manageable, but no less interesting or spectacular than Lahinch. The next destination is Tralee. It is epic. Tralee is one of those pieces of golfing terrain where it is impossible not to build great golf holes. Twelve of the holes here are world class. The genius is the holes that tie these classics together do not let standards slip too far. The King himself, Arnold Palmer, designed the front
nine and God created the rest - so the saying goes. A two-pint Pebble Beach if you will. To the Ring of Kerry and Waterville, the sometime pre-Open hangout of Tiger Woods, Mark O’Meara and the departed Payne Stewart. The feeling of isolation and privilege is a happy combination. Looping around a peninsula, the links here are, put simply, one great hole after another. Another brilliant stop, Ballybunion, which boasts the Cashen, the ‘second’ course here but a real cracker. Mainly flat and more subtle in its demands, Palmeraie is nevertheless a fine test and pleasurable for players of all levels. Much tougher is Kyle Phillips’ new Al Maaden. Albeit long and demanding, its design is constantly intriguing and invigorating. You can also enjoy a relaxing 27 holes at Royal Golf Marrakech, built by
the Pasha of Marrakech in 1933 and which has hosted the likes of Winston Churchill and Lloyd George. There are also three Arizona-style desert courses, by Steve Forrest, Jack Nicklaus and Niall Cameron. Forrest’s Noria offers areas of cactus-covered wasteland and boulderstrewn ravines. The architect’s vision was of a traditional village that celebrated the architecture of southern Morocco. Meanwhile the Samanah Club is a stunner, showcasing Jack’s work at its best.
