3 Keys to ‘Buying’ a Better Game by Leonard Finkel If new clubs meant you would drive the ball 20 yards longer and drop several strokes, would you reach for your credit card? According to a Golf Magazine fitting study, you should! Partnering with Club Champion, the #1 premium club fitter, builder and retailer of the best brands in golf, Golf Magazine declared, “Fitting Matters!” Based on the data and player interviews, it’s clear that correctly fit clubs help golfers of all levels –“you can actually buy a better game with properly fit clubs.” The study found golfers gained 22 yards off the tee, up to 15 yards with their irons and lowered their scores by an average of 3 strokes per round.

I spoke with Club Champion founder, Nick Sherburne, who gave me a quick primer on what you should look for when buying new equipment. Club Champion is the highly regarded expert in the field, ranked by Golf Digest among the 100 best club fitters year after year. They offer more than 35,000 hittable head and shaft combinations, the best-trained master fitters, nearly every brand in golf, plus unrivaled, in-house club building. Here are 3 tips Nick had to share. 1) Choose the Proper Shaft The industry has taught us that the head is the most important component of a golf club. However, the proper shaft is actually more important. The shaft powers the clubhead and is critical to how well the club performs. If your shaft doesn’t optimize your swing, then you’re not maximizing your clubhead. Buying the ideal club off the rack is almost impossible because there is no industry standard that defines an R, S, or X flex shaft. The way to determine your best shaft/head combination is to use a skilled fitter working with a launch monitor. Club Champion begins all fittings by evaluating the shaft, not only to determine the appropriate flex, but also the proper shaft weight. They utilize a unique coupling system that allows you to combine any shaft and head together. Most fitters use fitting carts provided by club manufacturers that limit their ability to mix-and-match components across carts. Club Champion, on the other hand, offers hundreds of shaft options, many not available from most other fitters and retailers. 2) Choose the Appropriate Clubhead All driver models have distinctive characteristics that affect launch angle, spin rate and ball speed. Look for a clubhead that provides maximum distance, control and feel for your swing. Launch monitors identify which head and shaft combinations deliver the highest Smash Factor, ball speed and controlled spin. Irons are even more complex because golfers need to choose between design features like offset, leading edge, lie angle, weighting and varying degrees of cavity back, which all impact playability. These design elements can counter a fade, a hook or promote better and more consistent contact. That’s why it is so important for a fitter to blend your swing characteristics with the correct components. This impacts how your club feels when you swing it. With today’s widely variable shaft, clubhead and grip weights, getting the right swingweight is more important than ever. A heavier swingweight will make a shaft play looser; lighter makes it play stiffer. The key application of swingweight is matching clubs within a set. Fox Hollow Golf Club is one of the premier

golf courses in the state and was recently rated 57th by Golf Digest’s “Top 75 Courses Accessible to the Public in Florida”. Purchased by the Creighton family four and a half years ago, one of their goals was to take the course to a higher level by improving course conditions and constantly making improvements. Opening in 1994, the Fox Hollow golf course has the distinction of being one of the last courses designed and built by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., one of the most prolific and innovative golf course designers of all time. Hollow, the legendary Jones created a layout as picturesque as it is playable. Quite simply, Fox Hollow offers a good, fair test of golf. Water comes into play on 11 holes and Jones’ other signature feature – plentiful and penal bunker complexes – abounds. Fox Hollow has hosted local qualifying for the U.S. Open as well as qualifiers for the Valspar Championship, the PGA Tour event held annually at Innisbrook Golf Resort. The par-71 championship layout features five sets of tees and offers new challeng-

Hole #18 es every time it’s played, mixing native trees and vegetation, sparkling lakes, sand bunkers and a variety of wildlife. Fox Hollow’s rolling fairways are a delightful departure from the pancake-flat layouts found elsewhere in Florida. The third hole is a straightaway par 4 (measuring 451 yards from the back tee) that will challenge the most accomplished ball strikers. Viewing the hole from the tee there’s a water hazard left and OB right. A massive oak tree on the right pinches in the landing area, making the tee shot extremely demanding. The approach shot is uphill to a wide, narrow

green protected by a deep bunker in front and more sand on the player’s left. If awards are what you’re looking for, the Tampa Tribune has placed Fox Hollow on its list of top three public-access courses in all of west central Florida; and Central Florida Magazine says the 18th hole is simply the “Best Par 4 in Florida”. From the tips, Fox Hollow’s finishing hole is a robust 459 yards. From the white tees it’s a slightly more manageable 429 yards. With water guarding both sides from tee to green, the fairway appears to be an island of grass. Place

The approach demands a long, accurate shot to a large, undulating green protected by yawning bunkers front left and right. All new bunkers and meticulously maintained greens add to the enjoyment of the course. Beginning in March, Charlotte Harbor National will also host a live golf radio show broadcast Saturday mornings from 8-9. It features Dave Hronek, PGA Director of Golf; Charlotta Sorenstam, LPGA Director of Instruction and Rich Smith. The public is invited to participate as audience members. The show can be heard on FM97 or streaming on their website and Facebook page. The renaissance extends to the golf course and beyond. The 4- 1/2 star Golf Digest rated course designed by 1986 PGA Champion Bob Tway is a fun course for beginners but challenging for even the best golfers. Under the direction of Jamie Detert, GCSAA Director of Agronomy, new bunkers are completed on all 18 holes, and the course is in the best shape ever. Mark O’Neal, a club member for 18 years, has witnessed the tremendous improvements over the last six months. He originally was attracted to the community GolfCoastMagazine.com

because of its small size and the relative ease of making a tee time. A member of the men’s golf association, he also feels the members are so friendly that it’s always easy to find a game. O’Neal credits the teamwork of General Manager Ellen Smith along with her husband Rich’s workaholic schedule to the many ways the community has benefitted. “From inside the clubhouse to the golf course, it’s a remarkable change.” He points to the recent great reviews on Golf Advisor. “The last 3-4 months have been nothing but positive,” says O’Neal. Charlotte Harbor National is also home to the world’s only Sorenstam Golf Academy, led by Charlotta Sorenstam, LPGA 1998 Solheim European Cup Team Member, 2000 LPGA TOUR Standard Ping Register Champion and sister of LPGA Hall of Famer Annika Sorenstam. Charlotta moved the academy from Orlando and has embraced the North Port community, now calling it home. Her large following

of students from Orlando, Tampa and Fort Myers have traveled hours for lessons and to play the course. “The most important improvements I’ve seen here is the greens and bunkers are so much better,” says Sorenstam. “For me, playing a course with greens and bunkers in such good shape makes for a totally enjoyable experience.” CHNGC also supports two main charities, Arnie’s Army charitable foundation and Folds of Honor with a portion of each membership and a dollar from each round. In December, the club raised over $15,000 to donate to men’s prostate cancer in honor of Will Frantz, PGA professional emeritus. In announcing the acquisition of Port Charlotte Golf Club Smith said: “It’s a beautiful golf course. The people there are as nice and friendly as the people at Charlotte Harbor National. Being that this is my hometown and my community I love the fact that I will have two of the nicest golf courses in the area. So many opportunities are in place for members to have two places to play. The clubs are both semi-private and anyone can play but the members will now have two courses to play.” Renovations are scheduled this summer for Port Charlotte Golf Club with the same core values employed at Charlotte Harbor National of exceptional quality, hospitality, charitable giving and lots of fun. As for the big picture to be announced in October, we just can’t wait to hear!

2018 PGA Merchandise Show

If the annual gathering in Orlando is any indication, 2018 is off to a good start. Traffic on the show floor was strong and, more importantly, vibrant. Industry tracking firm Golf Datatech also saw reason for optimism, with founding partner Tom Stine saying he expects 2018 to be a good year for the industry. “I would expect we would see a bounce back in units sold this year, and the price points have been good. I’m optimistic.” Those last two words pretty much summed up the attitude of most in attendance. After years of existence on the sport’s periphery, the application of statistics and data-driven technology is no longer a novelty in golf. Judging by its presence at the show, it’s a mechanism at the heart of all things golf, be it instruction, management, equipment or just plain recreation. Examples include more in-depth output from launch monitor and simulator readings; digital apps that track your playing performance with your clubs and share the info with your mobile device; smart systems in golf carts to identify what parts of the course act as bottle necks; and suits that deduce what parts of your golf swing are causing problems like hooks and blocks. These breakthroughs have been talked about for years, although always using the future tense. As this week’s show proved, the future is now.
