Valencia Golf & Country Club Extraordinary Golf is Just a Short Drive East on Immokalee Road
Valencia Golf and Country Club is
a standout facility in Naples – rated Best Public Course in Naples by readers of Naples Daily News, Four Star Rated by Golf Digest, and still benefiting from a recent renovation that was completed in late 2018.
This breathtaking J. Drew Rogers designed course is open to the public and has been a “must play” golf course here in Southwest Florida since first opening in 1997. “We aspire to deliver the best public golf experience in Naples,” GolfCoastMagazine.com
said Nick Stokke, PGA, Head Professional at Valencia, “Players can expect an exceptional round on a beautifully maintained course every time they play at Valencia.” Valencia naturally compliments Florida’s natural beauty. Tall pines line fairways as you wind through the cypress preserves. Scenic lakes dot the landscape, but do not dominate the course. The course is thoughtfully laid out so that each hole presents a distinct challenge or strategy in the form of risk and reward situations.
COVER STORY
In an ongoing commitment to delivering a first-class experience, Valencia has undergone several major renovations since opening. Most recently in 2018, Valencia closed its course for 6-months to invest in major improvements to playability along with ensuring that the fairways and greens are always exceptional.
11
Valencia also resurfaced their greens with TifEagle Bermudagrass, giving them a better speed and consistency throughout the year. The fairways were all resurfaced with Celebration The renovation repositioned many Bermudagrass, which is renowned of the bunkers and reduced their for drought tolerance and numeracy, creating a more strategic maintaining excellent conditions course for players of all skill levels. throughout the year in Florida.

COVER FROM THESTORY EDITOR
With its record of investment, it’s no surprise that Valencia is consistently recognized as one of the area’s best public courses. Playability and challenge are at the center of what Valencia delivers to golfers. The course can play as long as 7,145 yards if you are playing the tips, down to 4,786 yards at the forward tees. The fairways are wide, the hazards are not punitive, and the undulating greens provide a unique challenge not often found in Florida. Valencia offers public play as well as several compelling membership options. There are options for players who would like to purchase monthly memberships in high season, summer memberships, GolfCoastMagazine.com
or annual memberships. All memberships can be purchased for individuals or families. For players looking for events and game development, there’s nowhere better than Valencia. They offer Men’s and Ladies’ Leagues, Couples Events, and a variety of clinics. They also have one of the best practice facilities in Southwest Florida, complete with 30 grass stations on the driving range, a 5,000 sqft putting green, and a 5,550 sqft chipping green. Quarry Course
Black Diamond
Located in the heart of Citrus County, Black Diamond Ranch is a sanctuary for those looking for a golf retreat unlike any other in Florida. The rolling hills and towering pines provide the perfect backdrop for a memorable round of golf, and private homes welcome guests for a relaxing evening. The signature Quarry Course can best be described as breathtaking. The 13th through 17th holes are carved over and around the canyon walls of two abandoned limestone quarries. Writer Dan Jenkins once referred to this stretch as “the best five consecutive holes of golf anywhere in the world.” Designed by architect Tom Fazio, the Quarry Course opened in 1987 and has garnered high praise from Golf Digest, Links Magazine, and Golfweek, which ranked it 5th in its 2017 “Best Courses You Can Play” list for Florida. While the Quarry Course is one of America’s favorites, the Ranch may very well be the members’ favorite. The Ranch’s 16th, 17th and 18th holes “represent the three best finishing holes I’ve ever designed,” according to Fazio. The Highlands is no slouch either, and may be the most difficult GolfCoastMagazine.com

course at Black Diamond. It can be played in tandem with the front nine of the Ranch or Quarry, offering two more 18-hole combinations. Off the golf course, guests enjoy three and four-bedroom accommodations; private, fully furnished homes conveniently located within the gated Black Diamond community. During their stay, club guests are invited to visit the Black Diamond restaurant for a pre-round lunch or quiet dinner. The chef and his staff delight members and guests alike with a world-class culinary experience. For those who need a break from golf, the club offers a heated pool and Har-Tru tennis courts. HOMES
Matching Buyer Preferences with SWFL Golf Communities By Joe Morgan-GOLF HOME GURU Fifteen years of selling real estate in our spectacular Southwest Florida golf communities has been an extremely gratifying and enlightening endeavor. Regardless of whether my clients came from the USA, Canada, United Kingdom, etc., they’ve all had the common objective of finding the golf home/golf community that would best fit their individual budget, family lifestyle, and golfing habits and ability. However, the diversity of their personalized needs and wants is what has made my job truly challenging and exciting! The purpose of this article is to present you with some of the most common requests I’ve gotten from these folks…requests that reflected their individual preferences and priorities. If you’re currently in the process of looking for a home in a Southwest Florida golf community, some of these requests might resemble your own. If that’s the case, my answers will hopefully point you in the direction of the golf community, or communities, that will work best for you.
CUSTOMER REQUEST: “We’re from Michigan and we live on a lake. We want to buy in a golf community, and also be able to boat and fish in a freshwater lake. What golf communities would you suggest?” ANSWER: The Quarry (Naples) and Miromar Lakes (Fort Myers) have 500700 acres of freshwater lakes for boating enthusiasts, along with challenging championship-caliber golf courses and superior amenities. CUSTOMER REQUEST: “We’ve determined that we want to be in a bundled golf community with new construction. What Naples bundled golf community works best for us?” ANSWER: Esplanade, an upscale bundled golf community, is still under development in north Naples and it offers amazing amenities and golf course. CUSTOMER REQUEST: “We’re members of a private club in Chicago with only 250 members and we don’t have to set up tee times. What Naples club, with less than a $50,000 initiation fee, would you recommend?” ANSWER: Greyhawk at Golf Club of the Everglades, also under development in north Naples, is restricting golf membership to 300-golfers, with no tee times required.

CUSTOMER REQUEST: “We have a big sailboat that we want to bring down here with us from New Jersey. What golf communities in Southwest Florida also have a marina, with access to the Gulf of Mexico?” ANSWER: Your best golf community options for bringing along your sailboat or yacht are Windstar (Naples), Bonita Bay (Bonita Springs), and Gulf Harbour (Fort Myers)…all, obviously, very upscale golf communities. CUSTOMER REQUEST: “We live on an Arnold Palmer golf course in Pennsylvania and we love its design and playability. Did Arnie design any courses down here that we should consider?” ANSWER: Naples Lakes (bundled; Naples) and Wildcat Run (non-bundled; Estero) both feature Arnold Palmer “Signature” golf courses. CUSTOMER REQUEST: “We’ve already determined that we want to be in a bundled golf community—preferably with 36-holes of golf—and we also want to use our personal boat to access the Gulf of Mexico. Will any of the bundled golf communities work for us?” ANSWER: Pelican Sound (Estero) is the only bundled golf community west of Highway 41, and it has its own boat launch into the Estero River, along with shuttle boats to take resident members to Lover’s Key Island. CUSTOMER REQUEST: “We won’t be able to be down here much the first few years we own our Southwest Florida condo, so we’ll probably just play public courses then. But, after we retire, we’d like to have the option to join a private club. Will any local golf community satisfy both desires?” ANSWER: Lely Resort, with two well-maintained public courses (The Flamingo & The Mustang) and one private course (The Classics), offers a great solution for this request. CUSTOMER REQUEST: “We want to buy in a Naples golf community—preferably with no more than $50,000 initiation fee—and we want to walk the course when we play. What would be our best option(s)?” ANSWER: Eagle Creek, Kensington, and Greyhawk—all in Naples—allow golfers to walk at any time. Some others allow walking with certain time restrictions. CUSTOMER REQUEST: “We live on a TPC course in the Northeast, and we heard that there’s one in Southwest Florida that was co-designed by Arthur Hills and Hal Sutton. Where is it?” ANSWER: Treviso Bay, located in southeast Naples, is the only bundled golf community in the TPC line-up of courses. CUSTOMER REQUEST: “We don’t like carports… we want to be able to put our car, and possibly a golf cart, in a 2-car garage. However, we’re on a tight budget so we want a condominium in a bundled golf community, priced under-$250,000. Any suggestion?” ANSWER: Naples Lakes condos—their least expensive properties—all have 1-2 car garages on the first floor of the
28
HOMES
building, with the condos located directly above them on 3-floors. Many are priced under-$250,000, with furnishings included. CUSTOMER REQUEST: “Money is no object with us. We’re looking for a very large estate home with at least 7,000sf in one of your most prestigious golf communities. We must have at least three 18-hole courses to play. What communities come to mind?” ANSWER: Fabulous Grey Oaks (central Naples) has 54-holes of golf, and top notch amenities. Spectacular Bonita Bay (Bonita Springs) has 90-holes of golf, with three courses on-site and two courses located in north Naples. Bonita Bay also has a marina, with Gulf access. CUSTOMER REQUEST: “We will only buy in a golf community that has its own Beach Club on the Gulf of Mexico…and we want to be in Naples. Who do you recommend?” ANSWER: Pelican Bay, Fiddler’s Creek, and Mediterra—all in Naples—all have private Beach Clubs on the Gulf of Mexico. Pelican Bay residents can walk, bike, or take a golf cart shuttle to their on-site Beach Club; the other two require auto or shuttle transportation. Coming In 2020 Highlights of the World Handicap System
What the new World Handicap System means for you: The new system will allow all golfers (regardless of playing ability) to compete on a level playing field and is designed to be as inclusive as possible. It will be easier for golfers of any skill to establish and maintain a handicap. This new handicap system will be universal, and course and slope ratings will be consistent worldwide. Under the current USGA system, golfers must enter a minimum of 90 holes (five 18-hole rounds) to establish a handicap. That number will be lowered to 54 holes and can be a combination of nine- or eighteen-hole scores.
REVIEW
41
The current maximum handicap limit is 36 --- four and 40.4 for men and women, respectively. This will change to a max handicap of 54 for all. As of now, golfers take the best 10 scores in the last 20 rounds to calculate their handicap. Beginning in 2020, one would take the best 8 scores in the last 20 rounds. Plus, handicaps will now be updated daily in the new system instead of twice per month, and abnormal course and weather conditions will be taken into account. The new maximum hole score for all golfers will be a net-double bogey (for handicap purposes only).

Golf’s Best Kept Secret is at Club Champion Proof in Performance: SST PUREing for Better Golf by Leonard Finkel Is golf’s best technology a secret? Most golfers aren’t aware of the SST PUREing process, or the benefits that come with a set of PUREd shafts. Amateur golfers are constantly seeking out the latest and greatest equipment as seen on the PGA Tour, so why aren’t they flocking to the technology that PGA Tour professionals have trusted for over 15 years - the same technology that’s helped win over $1.5 billion? It’s a good question, and one that has a layered answer. Nick Sherburne, co-founder of Club Champion, the nation’s premier club fitter and builder, and Matt Saternus, founder of Plugged In Golf, set out to understand why more golfers aren’t playing PUREd shafts, and to test the technology’s claim of game improvement. “Knowing what I know from years in this industry, I’m baffled that more golfers aren’t aware of SST PURE,” said Sherburne. “There’s a reason that Club Champion recommends all shafts be PUREd, and even includes it free with our custom built woods - a $30 value. Golfers who truly want consistency should start with PUREd shafts.” Awareness is the first layer in answering the question above; you can’t seek something out if you don’t know it exists. So what is SST PURE? It’s important to understand that golf shafts are not manufactured perfectly straight or perfectly round. Irregularities can cause problems when the shaft twists and bends during a swing. SST PURE Shaft Alignment identifies the most stable bending plane or “neutral-axis”, to allow for the club head to be installed in the proper orientation. But does that alignment really matter in the grand scheme of your golf game? That’s the second layer to answering our question, and it’s something that Saternus explored in a previous edition of Golf Myths Unplugged via Plugged In Golf. Saternus tested whether PUREing delivers measurable benefits or if it’s just another placebo. “For this test, we used two seemingly identical six irons,” he explained. “The clubs had the same head, shaft, grip, loft, lie, length, swing weight and total weight. The only difference was that one shaft had been SST PUREd and the other had not.” All of the testing was done at Club Champion in a controlled environment. The test consisted of seven golfers, whose handicaps ranged from the mid-teens to scratch. Each player hit ten shots with the PUREd six-iron and ten shots with a non-PUREd club without knowing which was which. The test concluded that the PUREd shafts led to significant distance increases. On average, the testers gained over seven yards of total distance with the PUREd iron compared to the non-PUREd club. That’s nearly a full club of extra distance despite the clubs having the same loft. The greater distance came largely as a result of greater club head speed, ball speed and smash factor. Players swung the PUREd club nearly 1 MPH faster and generated an extra 2.8 MPH of ball speed.
GolfCoastMagazine.com
REVIEW
The study also concluded that PUREing does, in fact, boost accuracy. On average, the test group was 2.2 yards closer to the center line with the PUREd six iron. That’s the difference between a makeable birdie putt and a challenging two-putt. On the PGA Tour, that would be the difference between being #1 in proximity to the hole and being 91st. PUREing helped players land their shots nearer the centerline and also helped to narrow their dispersion pattern. The average distance between players’ farthest right and farthest left shots was 2.1 yards smaller with the PUREd iron than with the non-PUREd iron. To sum it up, Saternus wrote, “The SST PUREing process is no placebo. It is one of the most impactful technologies that we’ve ever tested.” The full test can be found here: https://pluggedingolf. com/does-pureing-a-shaft-improve-performance-golf-myths-unplugged/. SST PUREing is available for all new clubs purchased and built through Club Champion, as well as existing clubs that golfers would like

13 Rules of Golf Etiquette For Dummies - by Charlie Parsons
If you’re someone who’s been playing golf a while, you know there isn’t much worse than having to deal with poor golf etiquette. It’s one thing to play with someone who’s a brand new golfer but it’s entirely different to play with someone who should know better.
with the golf shop before driving all over the course. Depending on the season and conditions, you might only get to drive on the cart path.
In my opinion, someone’s golf etiquette can really make or break a round, especially if you’re playing with complete strangers. Because let’s face it, you only get one first impression.
This usually happens with winter golf or when it’s really wet conditions to make sure the carts don’t tear up the course. You will also find this is pretty common on holes 1, 9, 18 or any other holes that can be seen from the parking lot or outside the course. They do this to show off course conditions to people driving by or first seeing it.
And the quickest way to never get invited back to a new club is having poor etiquette. People can forgive bad golf as it happens to everyone but bad etiquette leaves a bad taste with other golfers.
Keep that first impression of the course positive by obeying cart path only signs. Make sure to check with the starter and don’t try to drive likes it’s a Fast and the Furious movie. And stick with the 90* rule whenever possible.
Luckily, once you’re finished reading this post you can avoid a lot of common etiquette mistakes.
3. Warm Up with Three Balls -Another quick way to look like you’re brand new on the course? Warming up on the putting green with a bucket of range balls.
If you follow these golf etiquette rules, I’m confident you will make friends, grow your network, and always get invited back. 1. Show Up Early - This is one of the easiest things to do yet so many people still make this mistake every single day. Please make sure to show up at least 20 minutes before your tee time. It’s rude to fellow players and bad for your game when you scramble from the car to the 1st tee box. You want to arrive at least 20 minutes early so you can check in, get loose, and hit some range balls. And even if you “Don’t want to waste all of your shots on the range,” you should at least hit some putts and chips. There isn’t much worse than stepping up to the first tee cold and the first green trying to guess the speed. Showing up early will make it a better experience and most likely a better round for everyone. And you’re more likely to avoid injury too. Aim to arrive at least 20-30 minutes before your scheduled tee time. 2. Obey The Cart Path Rules - If you’re new to the game, you probably think golf carts are the best thing ever. And while they are awesome, make sure you check
GolfCoastMagazine.com
Please use your own golf balls and don’t use more than three golf balls on the putting green. Also, make sure they are clearly marked to avoid. 4. Don’t Talk While Others Are Hitting -The other tips mentioned are important but I’d argue this is the biggest golf etiquette screw up on the list. When someone is hitting, stay silent! When you’re standing over the golf ball, you can hear a twig break and one whisper can screw your swing up. This is the biggest faux paus on the golf course and can really make other golfers angry. Make sure to stay off your phone and always know when people are hitting. This will help you play ready golf and not interrupt another player’s swing. 5. Talk to Competitors Shots - Speaking of talking on the course, another piece of golf etiquette for dummies is to only talk to your golf ball. There is nothing worse than someone saying talking to your golf shot. I hate hearing other golfers say things like “Stay out of the water” or even worse “Great putt” about your shot before it actually went in. Talk to your ball and your ball only.

7. Be Careful Where You Walk -Make sure you are super careful of where you walk on the green as well. While the rules of golf now allow you to fix spike marks, it’s still extremely rude to walk in a fellow players line as it can guide their putt offline.
11. Get Off The Phone - This is a new golf etiquette rule but an important one. While phones and social media are addicting, don’t let them ruin a fun round with your friends. Get away from technology as much as possible and stay off your phone.
Not only do you want to avoid their original line but also their “through line.” The through line is where their ball would go if it missed long and avoid that line as well.
If you need to keep it on or close by, please make sure it’s in silent mode and stay present throughout the round. Just because you putt out doesn’t mean it is time to go back to your phone and look at Facebook.
8. Lost Ball Etiquette -Another great new rule of golf in 2019 is the shortened time to find a lost golf ball. Instead of five minutes you now have three minutes to hunt for wayward golf balls. Personally, I think slow golf is ruining public golf but the new rules in 2019 should help. If you think your ball is going into a hazard or potential trouble, please make sure to watch it land so you can find it quickly. Once your three minutes are up, take the drop and move on. Remember, it’s only a golf ball.
Plus, staying off your phone will help with slow play and make it more fun for everyone in the group. 12. Know the Rules - Each group is different so make sure the rules are clearly established on the first tee, especially if money is involved. What happens if you spray one OB? Are you doing match or stroke play? Are you giving putts or putting everything out?
And if you want to be a standout player, make sure to watch (not talk) to other players balls to help them find them quickly. A little good k
It’s so important to establish the rules for the day before teeing off. There’s nothing worse than someone dragging a four-footer when no one gave it to them. Know the rules in advance and save yourself a lot of frustration later in the round.
9. Playing Slow -As I mentioned, slow pace of play is turning away so many people from the game. At all costs make sure to play fast. My family motto growing up,
Check out our article on the rules of golf, to make sure you have basic understanding before showing up to the course..
“Even if you’re playing bad, make sure that you play bad fast.”
13. Always Yell Fore! - The final golf etiquette for dummies rule is simple. Always know where other golfers are on the course. If your ball is heading toward another group, make sure to yell “FORE” loudly. And I like to add “FORE left” or “FORE right” if you’re in a congested area.
If you notice that you’re behind the next group or get warned from a marshall, pick up, move faster, and stay with the group ahead. Please don’t let your ego get in the way either. No one wants a six-hour round. Speed up your round by using a GPS device or rangefinder instead of walking off sprinkler heads. Plus, if you’re just beginning golf, having the exact yardage probably is not going to matter that much anyway. And if slow play becomes a regular thing, tee it forward as it’ll make the game more enjoyable for you and everyone on the course. 10. Ready Golf -One of the reasons golf takes so long is that most golfers aren’t playing ready golf. Ready golf is nothing more than being ready when it’s your time to hit. It’s about being prepared and not taking loads of time once you’re up. Whenever I’m playing with strangers I always say ready golf on the 1st hole to make sure the group plays ready golf vs. honor’s golf. The only time I’d recommend playing honors golf is when someone makes a birdie, eagle or you are in a competitive event. Otherwise, stick to ready golf. Not only will you play faster but I’ll bet you also stay in rhythm and shoot lower scores.
Nearly getting hit can make other golfers extremely angry. So make sure you’re avoiding a fist fight on the course by yelling FORE if your ball is anywhere close. Golf Etiquette For Dummies Wrap Up If you’re brand new to the game and you happen to make some of these mistakes, don’t worry. Learn from them and move on. But the biggest ones to avoid are talking in someone’s swing, walking in their line, and not yelling fore towards another group. The other 10 tips will not help your etiquette but also make it look like you know what you’re doing out there. Hopefully, you can use these golf etiquette tips to have more fun, make new friends, and play better golf this year. And while you are at it, if you are a complete beginners head over to our post on common golf terms https:// theleftrough.com/golf-terms/so you don’t sound like a beginner.About the author: Charlie Parsons is the the owner of TheLeftRough.com He’s been playing golf for over 35 years and is a regular golfer just like you.
