March 2020 feels a lot farther in the

past than the calendar tells us.

On March 1st, we published an article in this space prognosticating about the future of golf. The story, which was written in mid-February, missed the biggest event of 2020 – the COVID-19 Pandemic. Less than two weeks after readers first saw our story on Golf in the 2020s, President Trump declared that COVID-19 was a National Emergency, marking the moment when lockdowns started across the nation and our lives saw massive changes. There have been countless stories on the human impact of COVID-19 and the tragedies that our community has experienced. We are taking a different angle – looking to the stories of how our industry has reacted to the pandemic and taking a second look at what the future has in store. GolfCoastMagazine.com

An Opportunity to Expand the Game Clearly, there is a short-term opportunity for golf. The benefits of golf beyond playing the game itself are needed today more than ever. Golf is able to provide a safe harbor for both people’s physical and mental well-being. It remains a place families and friends can remain connected while also supporting a healthy lifestyle. With so many other recreational outlets either closed or limited by the pandemic and so many that will likely to be impacted long term by technology alternatives (for example, going to the movies vs. direct home distribution; in the fitness industry, home fitness equipment and added technology will likely impact gym memberships). Golf remains a healthy and inimitable experience. I can exercise and go to the movies from my living room, but I can’t play golf in my living room. Not responsibly beyond putting anyway. The LPGA Tour Returns to Tampa Bay November 16-22 The stars of the LPGA Tour are headed to Tampa Bay November 16-22 to take on the newly opened Pelican Golf Club in Belleair. The course, which has already become a jewel among Florida golf tracks, promises to serve as a worthy test to the best golfers in the world. Pelican is a Donald Ross design that has been completely overhauled to create a truly unique experience. The tournament announced previously that tickets are unavailable for purchase due to the COVID crisis, but all four rounds will be televised on Golf Channel to more than 155 countries. The inaugural Pelican Women’s Championship marks the first LPGA event in the region since 1989 when the final St. Petersburg Open was played at the Pasadena Yacht & Country Club. The Tampa Women’s Open was held at Palma Ceia Golf & Country Club from 1947-1960.

The field for the Pelican Women’s Championship will be one of the strongest in all of professional golf and is expected to include stars like Lexi Thompson, Morgan Pressel and Brooke Henderson. It’s also expected to include top-ranked players with ties to the Tampa area including Brittany Lincicome and Nelly Korda. The event includes the opportunity to play alongside the pros in the Pelican Pro-Am. Golfers of all abilities are invited to contact the tournament office to learn more about this unforgettable experience. from local golf community General Managers, BOD members, or Membership Directors asking why they aren’t on the “GURU Top 25” list…and what they need to do to get on it? If their community has some obvious deficits that are impeding their attractiveness to my clients—such as overly-high mandatory membership fees; missing key amenities, such as outdoor dining, pickle ball, bocce’ ball; outdated facilities; a high population of homes that need updating inside; etc.—I graciously provide them with this feedback. However, the reality is that most of these communities don’t have glaring defects…and some even have unrecognized or under-appreciated advantages over communities on my list. That’s one of the reasons why I continue to show my clients homes in ALL communities that appear to best fit their parameters, regardless of whether they’re on my list or not. It’s also why I update/revise my list each year. SWFL is blessed with some of the best overall golf/social communities and best golf courses in the nation, and what doesn’t appeal to one of my clients may be another client’s favorite feature. The 2020 list, for instance, contains seven golf communities that weren’t on it a year ago and another 4-5 were added this year to the “Honorable Mention” lists, predominantly due to my clients’ recognition and appreciation of their key advantages…and my clients’ subsequent desire to buy a home in these communities. My advice is to use my list as a tool to narrow down your search due diligence, but don’t definitively rule out the other applicable
