This has been a year far different than we all expected it to be. The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically changed our everyday lives and will continue to do so well into 2021. Nevertheless, the game of golf saw a huge increase in participation, as well as an all-time high of golf equipment sales. Golf has proven to be a safe sport where social distancing comes quite easy. We are not out of the woods yet. Golf professionals have dedicated their time and hard work to make sure all golf courses have taken the steps necessary to keep all golfers safe and we thank them for providing a safe environment for all players. For more information on safety, along with your responsibilities as a player, please visit GolfSafeFlorida.com There is a lot happening in our community. The Club at Gateway has finished their $5+ million-dollar renovation project, including the dining venues which showcase the talents of Chef Dan Lavallee. We also spotlighted two industry pros - Shane’s Swing-Line Golf, is Naples’ only Master Club Builder and Trey Sones in Fort Myers, who is a former Professional Tour player offers lessons for both adults and children. We are also thrilled to see the return of televised golf! We are looking forward to the Pelican Women’s Championship Presented by DEX Imaging, which will be broadcasted without fans in attendance at the Pelican Golf Club in Belleair, Fl. This is the time of year when Florida welcomes the season with cooler weather and the return of old friends and busy schedules. Golf in Our New World

March 2020 feels a lot farther in the

past than the calendar tells us.

On March 1st, we published an article in this space prognosticating about the future of golf. The story, which was written in mid-February, missed the biggest event of 2020 – the COVID-19 Pandemic. Less than two weeks after readers first saw our story on Golf in the 2020s, President Trump declared that COVID-19 was a National Emergency, marking the moment when lockdowns started across the nation and our lives saw massive changes. There have been countless stories on the human impact of COVID-19 and the tragedies that our community has experienced. We are taking a different angle – looking to the stories of how our industry has reacted to the pandemic and taking a second look at what the future has in store. GolfCoastMagazine.com

An Opportunity to Expand the Game Clearly, there is a short-term opportunity for golf. The benefits of golf beyond playing the game itself are needed today more than ever. Golf is able to provide a safe harbor for both people’s physical and mental well-being. It remains a place families and friends can remain connected while also supporting a healthy lifestyle. With so many other recreational outlets either closed or limited by the pandemic and so many that will likely to be impacted long term by technology alternatives (for example, going to the movies vs. direct home distribution; in the fitness industry, home fitness equipment and added technology will likely impact gym memberships). Golf remains a healthy and inimitable experience. I can exercise and go to the movies from my living room, but I can’t play golf in my living room. Not responsibly beyond putting anyway. In my view, (we need to) continue to extol

more fun with golf boards and scooters, and focusing on hospitality.

Community is more important than ever.

We have a tremendous opportunity to create new lifelong golfers.

Golf is a communal game – we play with our friends and neighbors, often in our backyards. Our homes are built around golf courses. In Florida, where so many of us are from somewhere else, the events at our golf courses are often how we make friends and meet our neighbors.

Golf is experiencing an unprecedented surge in interest and activity. As long as COVID-related lifestyle and business restrictions are in place, golf will remain one of the primary activities people pursue. Existing golfers are playing more golf, former golfers are returning to the sport, and droves of people are taking up golf for the first time. This surge is leading to more demand on all aspects of the industry from club memberships, to tee times, to golf equipment, to lessons. The opportunity for golf is to retain as much of this accelerated activity as possible for years to come. This is the moment golf has been waiting for. We need to make sure this surge of people have FUN. Fun comes in many forms including great hospitality at the course, time with family, shiny new clubs and apparel, and lower scores via lessons. The golf industry has a collective opportunity to retain a new wave of people and boost rounds played for years into the future. As Covid restrictions eventually relax and other activities and business travel again compete for people’s time, a new-found passion for golf must be embedded in people’s lives to overcome other options for their time. - Joe Assell, CEO, GOLFTEC

11

At a time when we cannot spend as much time with our friends and families as we want, maintaining connections could not be more important. Golfers should take this as an opportunity to reconnect with their local clubs and participate in the social programming available to them. It’s a New World for Golf Golf has constantly evolved since its inception. We have done better than many other industries in this difficult period, and we can continue that momentum by taking a forward-thinking approach. By embracing technology and serving our communities, golf can grow sustainably for years to come. GCM

The LPGA Tour Returns to Tampa Bay November 16-22 The stars of the LPGA Tour are headed to Tampa Bay November 16-22 to take on the newly opened Pelican Golf Club in Belleair. The course, which has already become a jewel among Florida golf tracks, promises to serve as a worthy test to the best golfers in the world. Pelican is a Donald Ross design that has been completely overhauled to create a truly unique experience. The tournament announced previously that tickets are unavailable for purchase due to the COVID crisis, but all four rounds will be televised on Golf Channel to more than 155 countries. The inaugural Pelican Women’s Championship marks the first LPGA event in the region since 1989 when the final St. Petersburg Open was played at the Pasadena Yacht & Country Club. The Tampa Women’s Open was held at Palma Ceia Golf & Country Club from 1947-1960.

The field for the Pelican Women’s Championship will be one of the strongest in all of professional golf and is expected to include stars like Lexi Thompson, Morgan Pressel and Brooke Henderson. It’s also expected to include top-ranked players with ties to the Tampa area including Brittany Lincicome and Nelly Korda. The event includes the opportunity to play alongside the pros in the Pelican Pro-Am. Golfers of all abilities are invited to contact the tournament office to learn more about this unforgettable experience. Every professional golf tournament needs an army of volunteers to assist in operations. While volunteer needs will be limited this year due to the lack of general attendance, volunteer support has been especially strong leading into the first year. REVIEW

Golf Clubs are Investing in Health Florida Golf Clubs have been at the center of our communities since people started migrating to Southwest Florida, but they haven’t been standing still. In recent years, Golf and Country Clubs have been placing a heavier focus on offering their members with a well-rounded lifestyle. Numerous local clubs have recently started or approved multi-million dollar renovations of their facilities, including: The Club at Gateway, The Club at Grandezza, Heritage Bay Golf & Country Club, Olde Hickory Golf & Country Club, The Quarry Golf Club, Royal Palm Golf Club, the West Bay Club, and Worthington Country Club, just to name a few. While the golf course is often improved during these renovations, the clubs are investing millions in improving their clubhouses and facilities. The focus is on healthy lifestyles – which means that health GolfCoastMagazine.com

clubs are being built or expanded, space is being set aside for fitness classes, new equipment is being added to attract a younger group of members, and club restaurants are seeing major improvements. These renovations reinforce what we have always known – golf, except on those days when you catch the ‘shanks’, can have enormously positive mental health impacts. But it is just one part of a healthy lifestyle. That is why club restaurants are introducing healthy fare and members are being encouraged to use the fitness facilities. These improvements are helping us bring new people into our communities and improving the lifestyles of those who are already there. Staying healthy has never been more important than it is today. The improvements that clubs make today will keep them at the center of our communities for decades to come.

The GOLF HOME GURU®’s “Top 25 SWFL Golf Communities” By Joe Morgan-GOLF HOME GURU As I start my 16th year of specializing

in Southwest Florida golf community residential real estate sales, the question that I get asked most frequently continues to be… “What is the best private golf community in Southwest Florida?” But with over 100 different golf communities and over 150 golf courses in the area, it’s not feasible to select just one community. In addition, the golfers/golf home buyers that gravitate to SWFL have a very diverse list of needs, wants, and preferences that can’t be satisfied by just one golf community. So, 7-8 years ago I decided to develop a “Top 25 Southwest Florida Golf Communities” list that would enable my tens of thousands of annual website (GolfHomeGuru. com) visitors—most of whom use Download the new

this website as their primary source of information regarding SWFL golf community and housing alternatives— to narrow down our broad assortment of private golf communities, and focus on the handful-or-so that come the closest to satisfying their personal budgets, golfing habits and ability, and family lifestyle. The goal was to make their final selection of an ideal private golf community a lot easier and quicker. The exclusive “GURU Top 25” list has been fine-tuned over time, and it’s now the #1 most frequently visited individual page on my website, which so far this year has experienced over a half million total page visits. The list is based on 15-years of experience of showing and comparing properties in almost 90 different golf communities…and ultimately selling in almost 60 of these communities. It’s updated annually, and it primarily consists of the communities that are most often chosen by my buyers, reflecting their appreciation of the housing offerings and pricing, and the amenities offerings and improvements that are available in these individual communities.

from local golf community General Managers, BOD members, or Membership Directors asking why they aren’t on the “GURU Top 25” list…and what they need to do to get on it? If their community has some obvious deficits that are impeding their attractiveness to my clients—such as overly-high mandatory membership fees; missing key amenities, such as outdoor dining, pickle ball, bocce’ ball; outdated facilities; a high population of homes that need updating inside; etc.—I graciously provide them with this feedback. However, the reality is that most of these communities don’t have glaring defects…and some even have unrecognized or under-appreciated advantages over communities on my list. That’s one of the reasons why I continue to show my clients homes in ALL communities that appear to best fit their parameters, regardless of whether they’re on my list or not. It’s also why I update/revise my list each year. SWFL is blessed with some of the best overall golf/social communities and best golf courses in the nation, and what doesn’t appeal to one of my clients may be another client’s favorite feature. The 2020 list, for instance, contains seven golf communities that weren’t on it a year ago and another 4-5 were added this year to the “Honorable Mention” lists, predominantly due to my clients’ recognition and appreciation of their key advantages…and my clients’ subsequent desire to buy a home in these communities. My advice is to use my list as a tool to narrow down your search due diligence, but don’t definitively rule out the other applicable

OUT OF BOUNDS

Unfinished By Jeff Thoreson, Golf and Travel Writer j.thoreson@comcast.net

If Schubert couldn’t finish his symphony,

how can we be expected to finish golf? The game is music to our ears, a rainbow to our eyes. We chase the pot of golf gold. But we can’t find it. It’s not there. Or is it there, somewhere? We run through the spectrum looking for an end, for a completeness to the natural circle of start to finish. But the game doesn’t provide that. Golf is forever unfinished.

World Woods Golf Club

Featuring Two World-Class Golf Courses

Opened in April 1993, World Woods Golf Club has since firmly established itself as one of North America’s finest golf facilities. World Woods offers two championship layouts, both consistently rated among the top 100 courses in the USA. For good measure, World Woods also boasts one of the top-ranked practice facilities in America. World-renowned architect Tom Fazio carved two distinctly different courses out of ancient live oak groves and pine tree forests along the rolling terrain of Florida’s Nature Coast in northwest Hernando County. “We didn’t start by designing golf holes, “ said Fazio. “We began by viewing the big picture, the land mass, the scale, the concept. We allowed the land to tell us what to do.” Pine Barrens is an intimidating layout named for its large number of pine trees and barren waste areas. Its terrain is reminiscent of the sand hills of North Carolina. Over 7,200 yards long, this par-71 course has impressed all players – amateurs and professionals alike – who have challenged it. Requiring long carries as well as precise placement, Pine Barrens resembles Pine Valley, perennially ranked the best golf course in America. Rolling Oaks – 7,333 yards, parGolfCoastMagazine.com

72 – is a traditional course with rolling hills and beauty rarely seen in Florida. Fairways lined with live oaks, dogwoods and magnolias complement large greens, which feature multiple tiers and cavernous bunkers. The presence of azaleas and closely manicured fairways and greens has helped Rolling Oaks draw comparisons to Augusta National. Prior to challenging World Woods’ championship tracks, players are invited to experience its nationally-ranked practice facility. The circular practice park, occupying over 22 acres, features eight separate teeing areas, target greens, bunkers and trees. Fazio created a rare opportunity for golfers to practice in a variety of wind and sun conditions. The practice facilities also include three challenging practice holes, a 9-hole short course featuring seven par-3s and two par-4s, and a two-acre putting course that has tremendous undulations guaranteed to challenge even the game’s best putters. If you have never experienced golf at World Woods, you have missed a little bit of golf paradise. For most golfers, it’s as close as they’ll ever get to Pine Valley and Augusta National. For more information – including rates and views of all 36 holes – visit www.worldwoods.com.
