I’m sad to say goodbye to Jean Couser, my long-time partner and publisher of the Sarasota Edition of Golf Coast Magazine. She has retired and is now devoting her time and energy to being the best grandmother she can be. We go way back to 1987 when Golf Coast was originally conceived. Jean Couser – The Queen of Golf Coast Jean Couser, who founded the Greater Sarasota edition of the Golf Guide in 1987, which later became Golf Coast Magazine, is retiring to spend more time enjoying life as a new grandmother. As a publisher, Jean built the company from an idea into an established magazine with three print editions and a large digital following. In 1995, Tami Vaughan joined the team to update the map and eventually, help publish the entire magazine. The internet was still in its infancy in those days – making publishing a frantic process. They would burn the pages onto CDs and overnight them to Hilton Head for printing. The magazine was always mailed minutes before the UPS truck came to pick it up! In 2012, Jean joined force with Bruz Fellenz, who was publishing the Golfer’s Guide in the Greater Tampa Bay Area, to create Golf Coast Magazine. The magazine was sold to Rose and Ryan Ruppert in 2015, in a first attempted retirement. However, that didn’t go to plan and Jean decided to stay until 2021! Golf has had its ups and downs through the years, and Jean was always there fiercely advocating for the industry and her clients. Jean has always had her eye on the future, which is why she is passionate about introducing kids to the game. She served on the Board of Directors of the Greater Junior Golf Association for 18 years, a position that twice earned her The Dunlap Award which was given to the volunteer who contributed the most to the organization. She was also named Amateur of the Year by the SW Chapter of the North Florida PGA and honored by the North Florida Section of the PGA with the same award. She always likes to add that it certainly wasn’t given to her for her playing ability!

“Throughout our time of “working together” it never seemed like work. Jean has been a friend, sister, mentor, mother, shoulder to cry on and only occasionally a boss,” said Tami Vaughan, which was echoed by Bruz Fellenz who added, “Jean has always had my back, no more so than when we broke away from Golfer’s Guide and resurrected Golf Coast Magazine. We have always had a friendly competition, but that never stopped us from being great friends and helping each other whenever the opportunity arose.” Ryan Ruppert reflected on her leadership, saying, “Jean’s tireless work building Golf Coast Magazine from the ground up cannot be overstated. Working with her for the last five years has been a true privilege. Our magazine would not be where it is today without her guidance and dedication.” Though Jean is retiring to spend more time being a grandmother, her impact will be felt for years. She plans to continue offering advice, so her guidance will continue shaping the future of Golf Coast Magazine for years to come.

LPGA Stars Return to Tampa Bay November 8-14 The stars of women’s professional golf are returning to the Tampa Bay region for one of the most talked about new events in all of professional golf. For the second-straight year the Pelican Women’s Championship will be contested at the Pelican Golf Club, a Donald Ross design that has been completely overhauled to create a truly unique experience for golfers and fans. The tournament will be held November 8-14, 2021. Last year’s inaugural event featured a star-studded field of elite golfers like Lexi Thompson, Brooke Henderson, Lydia Ko, Morgan Pressel and more. Also competing in the field were local LPGA professionals like Brittany Lincicome and Nelly Korda. The event was won by major winner Sei Young Kim, who moved to second place in the World Rankings. While the inaugural event was initially postponed and then held without general spectators in attendance, organizers are expecting to host thousands of fans later this year and will offer a variety of activities and entertainment options in addition to watching golf. The week of festivities includes activities for kids and adults of all ages. Children under 18 get in free and are invited to the Junior Golf Show on Saturday to meet and mingle with LPGA professionals and learn about what it takes to be a professional athlete. The event also includes the opportunity to play and party alongside the pros in the Pelican Pro-Am. Golfers of all abilities are invited to contact the tournament office to learn more about this unforgettable experience.

The tournament is highly engaged in the community, including the launch of a Ticket Design Contest with local elementary schools. Thousands of students will submit their own designs and winners will be selected to appear on the faces of the Daily Grounds Passes. The Women’s Leadership Summit during tournament week promises to be an amazing afternoon of personal and career development. Speakers include notable community and business leaders, as well as some of the world’s top professional golfers showcasing their skills. Every professional golf tournament needs an army of volunteers to assist in operations. While volunteer support was especially strong in the first year, there are always open positions available. There are a variety of options to attend the event and tickets will go on sale this summer. Grounds passes provide the opportunity to walk the course and witness not only the impressive play of the golfers but experience the immaculate course renovation completed by Beau Welling Design. Located in the heart of Citrus County, Black Diamond Ranch is a sanctuary for those looking for a golf retreat unlike any other in Florida. Mainlands Golf Club Family Owned and Operated for 50 Years

November 2021 marks 50 years in business for Mainlands Golf Club. Located just north of Park Boulevard on US 19 North inside the Mainlands of Tamarac retirement community, the course is nestled in the heart of Pinellas County. As such it is easily accessible from most anywhere in Tampa Bay. A family run and owned golf course, it has built its reputation over the years by providing the golfing public with great conditions at excellent prices all in a laid back and friendly environment. In 1971, fresh from New Jersey, Bill Blair purchased the Mainlands Golf GolfCoastMagazine.com

Club from the Mainlands home owners. In the 1990’s and 2000’s, Bill left control of the course to Tom Duane, his son in law. During that time the course underwent significant renovations. The course was lengthened, the greens were redone and about half of the holes were modified. Originally an executive track, the course was now a par 67 measuring 4800 yards, that was enjoyable for everyone from the novice to more seasoned golfers as well. Fashioned in typical Florida style, the open fairways of Mainlands are generally kind to shots hit with less than perfect

aim. Water comes into play on 12 of its 18 holes. However, only two feature forced carries, both under 100 yards. Comprised of nine par 4’s, seven par 3’s, and a par 5 on each nine, the course offers a little something for everyone. A natural match for golfers without long bomber distance, Mainlands nevertheless teases longer hitters with the possibility of driving the green on several par 4’s. Both par 5’s – with a well placed drive – also offer the potential for eagles. With a par of 67, you can play bogey golf and still shoot an 85 without having to explain that you played a course mea-

suring just over 4800 yards from the tips. Yes, Mainlands has two potentially drivable par 4’s to start you off the front nine, but before you start imagining those eagle putts, remember the risk of straying into the bunkers guarding those two greens. The risk/reward theme continues throughout the round. The 470 yard, par 5 fifth hole will tempt you to try and reach it in two, but don’t pull either shot into the lake that runs down the entire left side of the hole. The par 5 eleventh is another “reachable” par 5 measuring 490 yards from the back tee. However,

Mainlands’ seven par-3’s measure from 129 to 156 yards from the white tees. the hole is a pronounced dogleg left around another lake, requiring much risk for the reward of an eagle putt. You’ll probably make more decisions on this par-67 layout than you would ever make on a regular par-72 course negotiating the varying hole distances, the strategically-placed bunkers and the abundance of water. And you’ve done it in a lot less time, for a lot less money, and if you walked, you got some exercise. Founder Bill Blair passed away a few years ago. And Tom Duane has retired, placing Bill’s grandson Tyson Duane as General Manager. With the help of his Director of Golf Michael Summers and crew, Tyson is proud to offer the same friendly and personal service that he learned from his family. Tarpon Springs Golf Course Originally built in 1908, the Tarpon Springs golf course follows the architecture of the time with small, elevated greens and quite a few doglegs. The course is very scoreable on your good days, while water hazards can wreak havoc on your bad ones. During the summer of 2014, all 18 greens and two practice greens were reconstructed. The greens now feature new contours and state-of-the-art Seashore Paspalum turf. At the same time, bunkers were re-sanded and the driving range renovated. Tarpon Springs golf course is honored to be a participating course on the Florida Historic Golf Trail. The President’s Report We are off and running in 2021 and what a great year it has been so far. The event calendar is filled with great tournaments such as Pro-Pro’s, Pro-Am’s, the Stableford Championship and, as always, the annual Chapter Championship and Senior Chapter Championship. The WCC Assistant Association is still going strong, with a newly added WCC Education Series for our members. The WCC Education Series is a great way for our members to continue their education while earning MSR points. These events kick off at 9:00 AM with an Education Seminar, followed immediately by our Chapter Meeting ending at 12:00 PM. Participants will then take a lunch break until the fun portion of the event begins at 1:00 PM. Each of the Education Series events include a fun golf tournament using different formats such as a 2-Person Team (Blind Draw) Stableford, 2-Person Scramble and 4-Person Shamble. The cost for each of the Education Series events, including lunch and golf, will be $50 per person. We would like to give a huge “thank you” to Josh Poole and PEScience for partnering with us to support the WCC Education Series. The Assistant Association is flourishing GolfCoastMagazine.com

because of the leadership of Zoran Ilic. Zoran has organized another year of education seminars and tournaments for all of the Associates within our chapter. If an Associate attends a minimum of three events, they will have the opportunity to be awarded one of the $1,000 Association Grants that can be used towards their PGA Associate education. This is possible because of Gary Koch and his foundation, who have committed another $3,000 this year to our Assistant Grant. The three Grant winners of 2020 were Hollie Grchan, Richard Webster and Alec Bolla. Congratulations to the 2020 Association Grant winners and another huge “thank you” to Gary Koch and his foundation for their support.

The Meadows Golf And Country Club Changing With The Times

Sarasota hasn’t always been the busy city that it is today. Just a decade ago a great deal of the land being developed on University Parkway was farmland, the Mall at University Town Center was swampland, and there were nearly 100,000 fewer people living here. Sarasota has evolved, and so has the Meadows Country Club.
