2013 Best Publication Award
2020 was a year that the golf industry has never seen before, with amateurs and professionals alike playing more rounds and spending more on golf equipment than years before. While the COVID-19 pandemic is still in our everyday lives, golf has become an escape to us and we hope the momentum will continue in 2021. We would like to once again thank all of the golf professionals who have tirelessly worked to give golfers a safe place to play a round and keeping up with health and safety protocols and adapting to this new “normal.” There is quite a bit to look forward to this year in the Southwest Florida region, particularly in Naples. The Chubb Classic, presented by ServPro, will take place from April 12th-18th at Tiburón Golf Club in Naples and, as of present time, a decision has not been made regarding the presence of spectators. At Quail Village Golf Club, the Board of Directors have voted to approve a $1.2 million golf course renovation project that will begin in the summer of 2021. The Golf and Casual Shop, located in Fort Myers, will be celebrating their 50th Anniversary in March. It is the only locally owned and operated golf and apparel store in the area. Their sale begins on March 20th, so be sure to check them out. Now that the season is upon us in Florida, it won’t be like the old days where friends reunite in person and when calendars are filled up with social events and get togethers. It will be different this year, but golf has been our constant for a year like no other. It has been our way of being safely outside with friends and family, playing the game we all love. You can visit us at GolfCoastMagazine.com to stay up to date on all of the latest and local news in the Southwest Florida region and subscribe to our free e-newsletter that is published every week. Golf Is Back How New Players are Changing The Game
2020 started with a lot of optimism.
It didn’t take long to see that story end. The last twelve months have been an endless stream of bad news. Lockdowns, closed businesses, and lives cut short. But by the end of 2020, a different story had emerged for the golf industry – as outlined by Golf Datatech:
The good news was that 6.2 million new golfers entered the game. This caused the largest increase in rounds since 1997, which was Tiger’s breakout year. Were it not for shutdowns in March, April, and in a more limited sense through the summer, it’s likely that the number of rounds played would have eclipsed the record set in 1997.
As a result of an unusually high number of players leaving the game due to the pandemic, there is also Equipment sales were up by 10.1% in 2020. a tremendous amount of ‘latent demand’ in the system – that is to Those numbers make good headlines, say, players who would like to return but they mask a great deal of the story. but have not done so due to external In 2020, 5.7 million golfers stepped away factors. from the game according to the National Golf Foundation. COVER STORY
Who is golfing – and how do we keep them in the sport? “We have an embarrassment of riches in the form of new golfers, but can only grow the game if we keep more of them. Over just the past five years, we estimate 13 million people have tried playing golf on a golf course for the very first time. Yet we have not realized very meaningful net growth in on-course golfers. We can do better!” - Joe Beditz, National Golf Foundation, President and CEO Over 570,000 of the people who entered the golf market in 2020 had never held a golf club in their lives. Golf courses have been responding by reactivating clinics that were cancelled due to COVID-19 – with necessary safety precautions – as well as adding new programs for players.

Golf can be a frustrating game for new players. But when a golfer is helped by a PGA professional, their journey becomes easier and they are far more likely to become a lifelong golfer. This new group of golfers is also younger, making it critical that golf facilities to think about their junior programs. Clubs partnering with the First Tee are helping to drive this growth, and the industry needs to focus on bringing more young people to the game to remain sustainable. However, the discussion about young golfers can’t end when they go to college. Facilities that succeed in bringing in younger members have an edge at anticipating future trends in the game. This means tailoring playing options and memberships for young professionals, who often have limited time due to the demands of entry-level jobs and young families. Focusing on those ‘under forty’ golfers should mean fun outdoor activities for young people who don’t

have four hours. Offering nighttime options with lit ranges and beverages is an excellent way to draw golfers who aren’t looking for a full round. Despite our best wishes – COVID-19 will be with us for some time. That means that golf facilities have a tremendous advantage to provide options for people to gather in safe ways. If we can create habits for young professionals, they’ll keep those habits for their lives and, over time, start playing full rounds as well. Focusing on the Communities
are well positioned to be at the center of players’ social lives. If 2020 taught us anything, it’s the importance of human connection. The key for golf courses will be to stay involved in player’s lives – both on and off the course. Providing a wide variety of activities that keep players and members coming back will help build friendships among the community. The best way to develop a ‘sticky’ membership is to be the glue that holds your community together.
However, player programming needs to be molded to fit with who are In Florida, the golf course is often at new players are. Golf has been doing the center of our communities. We’ve proven that golf is a safe activity and need an excellent job of attracting more female players – the way to continue to keep the momentum for all of the ancillary services that our clubs can offer. that success is to ensure that there is plenty of community programming Whether it’s meeting at the targeting women. restaurant for a meal, or taking part in the gym, tennis, pool, or one of This is another area where courses the many other amenities that our can focus on the key ‘under forty’ golf communities offer – our clubs demographic. younger members will help grow the game and give clubs an advantage in a competitive market. Golf Rebounded Because it’s a Safe Outdoor Activity – Let’s Keep it Safe There’s no question that when the pandemic hit, people were looking for anything to get them out of the house, while not risking COVID-19 infection. Golf filled that need because our courses and communities stepped up with social distancing protocols, dividers in carts, low contact check ins, and new rules to reduce touchpoints. The result has been clear – the golf industry has fared better than the wider economy, and 2020 saw a steep drop in the number of golf courses that closed permanently due to poor performance. However, we are not out of the weeds with COVID-19, and we need to continue to offer golfers a safe experience. This means maintaining safety protocols at the clubhouse, while giving players more freedom to make their own decisions while they play. Providing the space to have a good time, while ensuring that golf remains a safe outdoor activity, will be critical to the success of the industry in 2021.

Passion means Embracing Change The golf industry has seen seismic change since it was first invented. In recent history, we saw the game rise in popularity, only to drop when the country was hit by the 2008 recession. We have an opportunity to build on the momentum that we gained over the last year. For players who are watching the game change – embrace it! Welcome new golfers to your groups and participate in the new programming that they encourage. For industry pros, it’ll mean evolving to meet changing needs. Offering new products for a new audience. With a little bit of work from both players and pros, golf will continue to grow.

Trey is a Tour player who was ranked 9th in the world by Golf Digest Magazine as an amateur. He was personally taught and received a sponsorship from David Ledbetter and Nick Price. He holds the course record at Lake Nona, beating Fred Couples’ record of 66 with a score of 65. After a series of injuries, Trey shifted his focus to teaching and has been helping players of all ages become competitive golfers. TIPS TO HIT YOUR DRIVER FARTHER AND STRAIGHTER!
Tee the ball up so half the ball is above the top of the head of your driver. Get in a good posture and place your ball position forward in your stance in line with the inside of your left foot. Tilt your upper body from the hips to the right so your weight is 60% on your right side, when you do this tilt, make sure your shoulders are aiming five yards right of the target. To create power on the downswing, push off your right foot, transferring your weight to your left side. Turn your hips and chest to the target and finish in a tour pose. REVIEW
River Hills Country Club The Revival of a Classic Private Country Club described as being Inviting, Distinctive and Dynamic in the Pursuit of “Best in Class” Amenities, Golf Course and Service.
River Hills Country Club opened in 1989 with a plan to have over 1,100
single family homes upon 1,000 acres with wonderful amenities, nature trail preserve, superb course conditions and a friendly, customer oriented staff. By all accounts, River Hills has become one of the most sought after guard gated residential communities in all of Tampa Bay. PGA Tour, LPGA Tour, PGA Champions Tour and professional athletes with the Bucs, Lightning and Rays have all called River Hills home. Since the original developer Arvida sold the facility in 2000, the club has been owned by several different management companies. Over the years – and hastened by the 2008 recession – the club and its facilities suffered as did most clubs throughout the country. After years of deferred maintenance, the River Hills Master Community Association (HOA) purchased the club in September 2019, sheltering the property from potential residential development and what would have resulted in declining home values. The property owners of River Hills voted overwhelmingly to purchase the club and agreed to a monthly assessment that enabled 100% of the residents to become Social Members with aquatic, dining and fitness facility privileges. Following the purchase, the HOA invested over $2M in improvements. These have contributed to the added value of a community that is truly involved and delighted once again with “their club”. The improvements have resulted in River Hills home values escalating at one of the fastest rates in western Florida over the past year due to the visionary actions of a very active community. Over 100 residents volunteer on various committees of property management and the club. River Hills offers golf and tennis memberships as upgrades for residents and offers those extended privileges to non-residents who may also gain desirable Social

River Hills is also the best and perfect setting for special events like weddings, golf outings and special corporate functions within the 15,000 square foot clubhouse that accommodates up to 200 guests enveloped by timeless décor. Management is overseen by a team with backgrounds, experience and international accolades. Over a century of experience guides this team to be the “best in class” among many fine clubs in Tampa. Simply, they focus upon being inviting, distinctive and dynamic to provide a differentiated uniqueness from others. One of the basic premises of growth is founded in the belief that Members build the culture, and management nurtures the frameworks of excellence on their behalf. Guided by visions to offer a family-oriented experience and atmosphere, River Hills has extensive programming for families, kids and adults. River Hills is also a club that believes in giving of its time and resources to the general community. “River Hills Cares” raised over $15,000 through Member donations in 2020 offering funding to thank over 1,000 essential healthcare and educational professionals with meals and gifts of thanks for their efforts during these challenging times. tourism ads in cold weather markets, the primary emphasis of the advertising always seems to be on our natural attractions…ie unlimited sunshine, the sparkling Gulf of Mexico, and pristine beaches. However, a very strong argument can be made that the allure of our 150+ golf communities brings in just as many seasonal visitors as those other attractions. Naples and Southwest Florida is a destination for avid golfers, both renters and owners. And, if you add up the year-around total revenue contribution of these amenitydriven golf communities, it’s Download the new

obvious that they play an extremely vital role in the economic success of Southwest Florida.
For the past 13-years, I’ve had the good fortune to specialize in real estate sales in these incredible golf communities. My Buyers have predominantly been from the midwest and northeast United States, Florida, and Canada. After doing a lot of online due diligence, these folks all came to town with many questions, and often much confusion, regarding how to satisfy their individual needs, wants, and preferences. It has been truly gratifying for me to be able to help each of my customers find the golf home/golf community that best fit their personal budget, golfing habits and ability, and family lifestyle. Whether I’m doing the search with you, or you’re doing it on your own, it should always start with the premise that all golf communities

are not created equal. The key features of each community need to be evaluated in order to find the community with which you’re most compatible and comfortable. Here are the key points that I’d suggest focusing on… • Community History—who is/was the developer; what’s its age; what is its financial condition; how progressive is it? • Community Size—how many homes does it have? • Location—is it close to beaches; close to 5th Ave. (for Naples’ homes); close to shopping and dining? • Golf Course—who designed it; how “player friendly” is it…for both men and women; how hard is it to get on in peak season (ie January-April)? • Membership Programs—what memberships are available; what do they include; are they optional or mandatory; how much do they cost…upfront initiation fee, and annual fee; are there any new member “incentives” available? • Clubhouse—is it big enough to accommodate the size of the community; does it need updating; sizes of key areas… casual and formal dining; pro shop; etc.?

• Amenities & Activities—do they have a full array of amenities; what ones don’t they have; are they big enough for the size of the community; what is their plan to add the missing amenities? • Housing Sales History—how many homes have sold in the past year; how many are currently for sale…and how long have they been on the market? Quite often, the most important consideration in evaluating golf communities is whether they have the type of home that works best for you? In order to determine which type of Southwest Florida golf home best fits your needs and budget, please review the following list (from most economical to highest price)… • Condominiums—most of these consist of 12-30 units on 2-4 floors, and have carports. These GolfCoastMagazine.com
are the most economical home type within a golf community…in terms of both purchase price and annual costs. Elevators are standard with 3-or-more-floors. Building insurance and maintenance of the exterior of the building are covered by condo association fees. • Verandas—two story buildings with 4-6 units on each floor. They feature front and back lanais, detached 1-car garages, and no elevators. Building insurance and maintenance of the exterior of the building are covered by condo association fees. • Carriage Homes—two story buildings with 4-6 units on each floor. They feature attached 1-car garages, and no elevators. Building insurance and maintenance of the exterior of the building are covered by condo association fees.

HOMES
• Coach Homes—two story buildings with 2-units up and 2-units down. Every unit is an end unit, and upstairs units often feature an extra bedroom and/or bathroom over the garage. They have attached 2-car garages, and some have personal elevators. Building insurance and maintenance of the exterior of the building are covered by condo association fees. • Attached Villas—two-or-more single family homes attached to each other. A desirable feature is that no one lives above you. They feature attached 1-2 car garages, and some have their own pools. The owner is responsible for homeowner’s insurance and exterior building maintenance. • Detached Villas—smaller single family homes, typically between 1,500-2,700sf. Most have attached 2-car garages and personal pools. The owner is responsible for homeowner’s insurance and exterior building maintenance. • Estate Homes—the largest single family homes in a community. Square footage varies greatly by community, but typically is over3,000sf. The owner is responsible for homeowner’s insurance and exterior building maintenance. Obviously, getting answers to all of the above questions and

considerations is a time-consuming process. However, in the long-run, it will save you time and money…and will ensure that you find the right golf home/golf community for you and your family! OUT OF BOUNDS
The Chore of Putting
By Jeff Thoreson, Golf and Travel Writer j.thoreson@comcast.net My friend Ice Pick says putting is fun.
I suppose it is, if you broaden your definition of fun. So now I consider it fun to stub my pinky toe on the coffee table leg. The next time I have to cross an asphalt parking lot in bare feet on a hot August day, I’ll savor the pleasure. When the check for the house payment bounces, I’ll just have to laugh. And when my wife says she’s really had it and is moving to the Caribbean with a guy she’s been seeing on the side for years, well, that will be my new definition of merriment and gaiety. Putting is fun? What’s wrong with this guy? He must love to clean his toilets, burn his dinner and scratch the paint on his car. If this guy thinks putting is fun, he must be the guy out there cutting his grass at 7:30 every Saturday morning. Putting is fun; give me a break. Actually, don’t give me a break. The straight putts are the only ones I feel I have chance to make. Putting is not fun. It’s a chore, no different from taking out the garbage, painting the trim in the living room or cleaning out the gutters. The only difference is you can make your kids take out the garbage, you can hire a painter to do the trim or you can go to Home Depot and buy gutter guards. Putting you have to do yourself. I can see how putting could be fun. If I had a chance to make every 30-footer like the guys on television, I’m sure putting would be a blast. If three-putts were less common than Big Bang Theory reruns, I’d rank rolling the ball on the short grass right up there with sex, Guinness and scratching off an instant lottery winner. But the fact is most of my 30-footers
GolfCoastMagazine.com
then require a six-footer, which I miss, resulting in another three-putt. So rather than extolling the art of putting, I curse the sheepherder who first knocked a rock into a rabbit hole with a stick and decided to make a game of it. I love striking the ball, and I am somewhat competent at it. I love the purity of the feeling. I love the accomplishment of executing an athletic endeavor far more difficult than it looks. I love the result: the ball taking off violently then flying softly, gracefully, and in the end, landing near the intended target with a gentle thump and a nice little roll out. So why is putting is such a problem? If the full golf swing is such a complicated process and I can do it with reasonable success, putting should be a breeze. If the full swing is Chopin’s Fourth Symphony in E minor, the putting stroke is “Chopsticks.” If the full swing is rocket science, the putting stroke is a bottle rocket. You’d think that because the putting stroke requires so little athletic ability – really so little ability of any kind beyond standing up and gently swinging your arms – that everyone would be able to do it reasonably competently. Ice Pick (his stab at the ball is more likely to scar the green than threaten the hole) says putting is fun, but he can’t putt. It’s just that he’s such a terrible ball striker that when he finally reaches the green, he realizes he won’t have to chase it into the woods or the sand or the backyard near the tee box any longer so he enjoys putting. Three or four stabs at it from 50 feet is pure enjoyment compared to seven or eight strokes from 425 yards. Switch back-
OUT OF BOUNDS
ing around the hole a couple of times is fun compared to crossing the fairway three times on a cart-path-only day.You can’t step in any mud on the green, the snakes have no place to hide and as bad as Pick is, he has yet to lose a ball on the green. So yeah, I get it. I see where he’s coming from. Despite IP’s incompetence on the green, he is a fountain of knowledge on the psychology of putting. He actually gets all that Bob Rotella stuff, and he uses it. Not well, but he uses it. And he imparts it on me. Like the thing about tossing a beanbag to the hole. Let’s say you’re looking at a reasonably straight 20-footer. If you tossed a beanbag underhanded to the hole, you’d probably get it close every time. So why can’t you roll your 20-foot putt close every time? Sounds reasonable. I’ve tried the beanbag toss. I can do it. But put a shaft and a flat-faced club head between my hand and the object I’m trying to get to the hole, and I wield it with the clumsiness of a drunken jouster. The problem is, adding that third element – the putter – takes the natural athletic ability out of the equation. Other sports are based on one’s natural motions, instincts and actions refined and perfected over the millennia since human survival was directly correlated to man’s ability to swing a club (the non-golf variety), or throw a spear or a rock. Tell me what Paleolithic caveman ever teed up a rock and tried to launch it with a stick to bring down dinner? When you’re throwing, you rely on instinct. It doesn’t matter how far you’re trying to throw something, you just throw it instinctively. You don’t have a million things running through your mind. You’re not concerned about form or follow-through or alignment. You just throw the ball like man has done since the beginning of time.Your natural instinct and athletic ability take over, and the ball arrives somewhere near the intended destination. It never winds up getting only halfway there, going a ridiculous distance past or missing the target by an embarrassing margin.Yet all those things happen when you putt, or at least when I putt. Other sports are read and react. Actions are
41
made in an instant. Decisions can’t be thought and re-thought and analyzed to the point of paralysis. I have way too much time waiting for my turn on the green, so I overanalyze because I have nothing to do waiting for the others in my group to lag up to two feet and mark. By the time I finally stand over my putt, I’ve decided it will break left, changed my mind and decided it will break right, then reasoned my way to hitting it straight at the hole and letting whatever happens happen because in all honesty I can’t read greens any better than I can read Braille. So I’ve taken the first step to solving my problem. I admit I have one: I can’t putt. There, I said it. Of the three important elements of putting – line, pace and quality of the strike – I usually get two of them wrong. When I do make a long putt, and sometimes even short ones, I don’t feel responsible. It’s a lie. Somehow I beat back the demons without knowing quite how I did it. I suspect many of my made putts are a case of two wrongs making a right – a miss-read and a miss-hit and the ball ends up in the hole. Yeah, Ice Pick, putting is a freakin’ blast, you moron. I spent years searching for the pendulum of my stroke, seeking the perfect metronomic back and forth that would give me the right combination of line and speed. I looked for the “fall line” of my putts, tried to pick out the pinnacle of the break and somehow incorporate that into my line (as if I could actually hit the line I finally decide upon). I searched for the grain and tried to figure out what it meant. It all simmers to a conclusion of worthlessness. Forget all that crap. The secret to being a great putter, my fellow loss on the moss, is to believe you are a great putter. Embrace the mystery. Surrender to the perplexity and bemusement of this oh so simple task. Admit to yourself that putting is just guesswork and that sometimes it’s going to take you three guesses to get it right.
