COVER FROM THESTORY EDITOR

What is Rich Smith’s secret for success at Charlotte Harbor National Golf Club and Port Charlotte Golf Club?

Something great is happening in the golf

industry, and it’s happening in our own back yard. Golf industry leaders who talk about bringing excitement and fun back into the game should start listening to Rich Smith, CEO of Cloud Ten! Marketing Group, LLC. As the new owner of Charlotte Harbor National Golf Club (formerly Bobcat Trail) and Port Charlotte Golf Club, he has already elicited a lot of fun and excitement in six short months, with no plans to stop. An hour spent talking with Smith is a highenergy journey of concepts, ideas and also a hint at an announcement being made in GolfCoastMagazine.com

October that he promises will revolutionize the game of golf. He plans to hold a press conference in Orlando that will impact 29million golfers and 15,500 golf facilities. It’s a secret until then, but it is a project he’s been developing for three years. The fun at Charlotte Harbor National begins when you call the club. PGA Tour player and sportscaster Gary Koch is an honorary member at CHNGC and his voice welcomes golfers with his iconic call on Tiger Woods’ improbable birdie putt in 2001: “Better than most! Better than most! Better than most!” before he extols the virtues of the golf course and club.

COVER STORY

The excitement continues in the renovated clubhouse that includes a new pro shop with top of the line fixtures and additional office space to make the pro staff more accessible to the players. The kitchen has been doubled in size to accommodate more diners at Cahoots Bar and Grill. A large dance floor and an expanded patio overlooking the 18th hole add to the ambiance and is the scene of many parties, or as they are called here, OCCASIONS!!!!

Caddyshack came through with a guest appearance by Shooter McGavin. The club is jumping. It even hosted three New Year’s Eve parties. Cahoots Bar and Grill is open 6:30 a.m. for breakfast every day and serves lunch and dinner, provides catering, take-out and even a delivery service.

At CHNGC Friday nights are usually packed houses with entertainment including Elvis sightings, and Rat Pack and Rolling Stones tribute bands. Recently the cast of L-R:Dave Hronek, Charlotta Sorenstam, Rich Smith & Jamie Detert make up the TEAM that is passionate about excellence in golf

All new bunkers and meticulously maintained greens add to the enjoyment of the course. Beginning in March, Charlotte Harbor National will also host a live golf radio show broadcast Saturday mornings from 8-9. It features Dave Hronek, PGA Director of Golf; Charlotta Sorenstam, LPGA Director of Instruction and Rich Smith. The public is invited to participate as audience members. The show can be heard on FM97 or streaming on their website and Facebook page. The renaissance extends to the golf course and beyond. The 4- 1/2 star Golf Digest rated course designed by 1986 PGA Champion Bob Tway is a fun course for beginners but challenging for even the best golfers. Under the direction of Jamie Detert, GCSAA Director of Agronomy, new bunkers are completed on all 18 holes, and the course is in the best shape ever. Mark O’Neal, a club member for 18 years, has witnessed the tremendous improvements over the last six months. He originally was attracted to the GolfCoastMagazine.com

community because of its small size and the relative ease of making a tee time. A member of the men’s golf association, he also feels the members are so friendly that it’s always easy to find a game. O’Neal credits the teamwork of General Manager Ellen Smith along with her husband Rich’s workaholic schedule to the many ways the community has benefitted. “From inside the clubhouse to the golf course, it’s a remarkable change.” He points to the recent great reviews on Golf Advisor. “The last 3-4 months have been nothing but positive,” says O’Neal. Charlotte Harbor National is also home to the world’s only Sorenstam Golf Academy, led by Charlotta Sorenstam, LPGA 1998 Solheim European Cup Team Member, 2000 LPGA TOUR Standard Ping Register Champion and sister of LPGA Hall of Famer Annika Sorenstam. Charlotta moved the academy from Orlando and has embraced the North Port community, now calling it home. Her large following

of students from Orlando, Tampa and Fort Myers have traveled hours for lessons and to play the course. “The most important improvements I’ve seen here is the greens and bunkers are so much better,” says Sorenstam. “For me, playing a course with greens and bunkers in such good shape makes for a totally enjoyable experience.” CHNGC also supports two main charities, Arnie’s Army charitable foundation and Folds of Honor with a portion of each membership and a dollar from each round. In December, the club raised over $15,000 to donate to men’s prostate cancer in honor of Will Frantz, PGA professional emeritus. In announcing the acquisition of Port Charlotte Golf Club Smith said: “It’s a beautiful golf course. The people there are as nice and friendly as the people at Charlotte Harbor National. Being that this is my hometown and my community I love the fact that I will have two of the nicest golf courses in the area. So many opportunities are in place for members to have two places to play. The clubs are both semi-private and anyone can play but the members will now have two courses to play.” Renovations are scheduled this summer for Port Charlotte Golf Club with the same core values employed at Charlotte Harbor National of exceptional quality, hospitality, charitable giving and lots of fun. As for the big picture to be announced in October, we just can’t wait to hear!

Premium Club Fitting Equals Instant Success 8 Out of 9 Golfers Added an Average of 21 Yards Off the Tee by Leonard Finkel With advances in club technology, most golfers could easily hit the ball farther and more accurately, yet a Golf Magazine study found that 90% of US golfers may be playing with improperly fit clubs. Says world-renowned instructor David Leadbetter, “It never ceases to amaze me that golfers buy clubs off the shelf and assume they’re right for them. Whether you’re a great golfer or a casual one, getting a custom club fitting is one of the quickest ways to improve your game.” Club Champion Golf delivers a Tour-quality fitting that produces longer, more accurate shots with a nearly 100% satisfaction rate. Their approach is unbiased; no specific vendor is promoted. The only goal – find the best combination of components to lower your scores. Leadbetter adds, “Club Champion is the #1 premium club fitter, builder and retailer of the best brands in golf. Their master fitters and builders are unrivaled experts. With over 35,000 combinations, Club Champion will build the perfect clubs for you.” A Golf Digest study found that 8 out of 9 Club Champion custom fit golfers lowered their scores by as much as six strokes per round and added an average of 21 yards off the tee. Ranked by Golf Digest among the 100 best club fitters eight times in a row, Club Champion’s unique coupling system allows them to combine any head and shaft together. Golfers hit the precise combination to be custom-built for them. Most stores use fitting carts provided by club manufacturers. While they offer options, golfers are unable to mix-andmatch across carts to determine their ideal combinations. Club Champion offers hundreds of shafts, many not available through most other fitters and retailers. “My new irons have been spectacular,” crows Joe Dresnok (Palm Coast, FL). Joe had a 32.1 handicap prior to his fitting and said it has plummeted 16 strokes per round. “I just can’t say enough about them. I can’t believe that I can hit greens as frequently, anywhere from 150 to 100 yards, much better than I ever could before.” Numerous PGA Tour players have been fit at Club Champion. Because of their unparalleled expertise, PXG Golf sends many of their Tour players into Club Champion studios to fit their premium clubs. Club Champion stands out because they build clubs in-house, to exacting, unrivaled tolerances. Variables such as swing weight, length, lie and flex DO alter performance. PGA Tour veteran Jay Williamson says, “I had access to every brand of shaft and head, but never understood what GolfCoastMagazine.com

REVIEW

they did for me. I couldn’t experiment like I do at Club Champion. They bring the same level of service players receive on Tour; the newest components and most advanced fitting technology. If you’re committed to golf on any level, I highly recommend it.” Incidentally, Club Champion added an average of 15 yards to Jay’s driving statistics. The experience and know-how combining these intricate parts together is what separates Club Champion from its competition. TaylorMade CEO David Abeles believes, “Club Champion truly is one of the most innovative club fitters in the business. They provide a consumer experience that is undeniably helpful for all golfers to play better. We couldn’t be more thrilled with our partnership with Club Champion.” Chuck Thiry (VP Strategic Partnerships – Cleveland Golf) says, “In our experience Club Champion represents the finest in the art of club fitting and building. We are confident that Club Champion will fit, service and support the most discerning golfers at the highest possible levels.”

13

While anyone will benefit from premium club fitting, it’s for the golfer who wants to optimize performance. When Club Champion says you’ll add 20 yards off the tee, they mean it. Using a TaylorMade driver and Callaway irons Gary Lichenstien said, “My distance off the tees has increased by 20 yards consistently, on occasion even more. My average score has dropped about 4-5 strokes on average. I feel over time, I can still pick up a few more strokes.” Whether you’re looking to buy new clubs or just fix your current set, premium club fitting is the answer. Standard price fittings range from $80 for wedges to $350 for an entire bag. Through April 15 at the new Naples location (1040 Collier Center Way), enjoy 50% off full bag fittings and 33% off all other fittings. With 28 studios across the country, at Club Champion, you don’t just buy clubs, you buy guaranteed improvement! For more information, visit clubchampiongolf. com/gcm or call 888-890-3218.

Olde Hickory Golf and Country Club The Best Bundled Golf Community in Southwest Florida

The Southwest Florida area—specifically

Ft. Myers to Naples – is chock full of great golf courses. Many of them are open to the public – some only by means of a “stay and play” package, others you simply pat a daily fee. But the best conditioned courses seem to be the ones that are often behind privacy fences and security gates. I’m talking about “bundled” communities, the type of community where belonging to the club – or at least purchasing a membership – is required by all homeowners. Naples is rife with them; they seem to make up the majority of courses in the area. I’ve had the opportunity to visit play and write about several of the courses and believe me, they are by far the best maintained courses in the area. In this economy, it seems that the only golf facilities that are truly flourishing are those at bundled communities. GolfCoastMagazine.com

Olde Hickory in Ft. Myers is one of those; in fact, it may well be the best bundled community in Southwest Florida. And that’s saying a lot with Fiddlesticks next door and The Legends across the street. There are 561 homes at Olde Hickory Golf and Country Club, all proud members of this private, exclusive bundled community. That’ s a low number considering most of their competitors have about 800 homes per 18 holes of golf. The community is conveniently located just minutes from Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW), Interstate 75, Florida’s Gulf beaches, hospitals and medical clinics. Ft Myers residents enjoy world class shopping, dining, entertainment and everything else the Southwest Florida lifestyle has to offer.

REVIEW

The centerpiece of this masterful bundled Hole #18 is the 18-hole championship community golf course designed by the legendary Ron Garl. At only 6,601 yards from the back tees, it’s not going to overpower anyone, however from the back tees, it will challenge even the best of players. The course opened for play in 1992 and has Bermuda grass greens and fairways. The fairways are well-groomed and the greens roll fast and true. Five sets of tees give golfers of all abilities a chance to enjoy the golf course. Residents can enjoy the convenience of playing a round of golf on their schedule and at their own pace. At only 281 yards, the par 4, 10th hole is the epitome of target golf. Play your tee shot is to a landing area that’s not a whole lot bigger than the green. There’s water on

19

the left and woods on the right, so keeping the ball in play off the tee is key. Succeed in this task and all that’s left is a short pitch shot slightly uphill to a triangular shaped green guarded on the left with water and rocks. It may be a short hole, but all pars (or better) are well earned. If you struggle, the friendly PGA Professional staff can offer lessons to help you shave strokes off your game. There’s also a full-service pro shop, driving range, and carefully designed chipping and putting greens making this a golf lover’s paradise. Olde Hickory Golf and Country Club is not without its share of amenities and it all starts in the clubhouse. This newly renovated, 22,000 square foot facility includes a new 2,600 square foot fitness center with state-of-the-art fitness equipment. As a

member, you’ll enjoy the magnificent view overlooking the driving range and 18th green, while using state-of-the-art cardio and strengthening machines to increase your fitness. If a group is more your thing, Olde Hickory offers several fitness classes provided by Fit Forever, the premier Sports Club Management and Corporate Wellness Company in Southwest Florida. The company has a unique approach to fitness and lifestyle management with classes designed to help older adults maintain their cardiovascular health, strength, and flexibility. Whether you’re a workout warrior or just looking to add some activity to your daily routine, the staff at the fitness center can help you enjoy the benefits of working out in a group setting. If class times don’t fit your schedule, members are still able to bring in workout videos and use the aerobics room. GolfCoastMagazine.com

To many members, a country club is only as good as its dining room and Olde Hickory doesn’t disappoint and it’s always a memorable experience. Executive Chef Werner Dietrich and his culinary team take pride in creating delectable dishes for members and their guests to enjoy. Whether it’s a casual lunch in the Grille Room or a multi-course wine and dine meal in the Dining Room, the food and service are always impeccable. Members also enjoy the club’s themed dinner nights as well as orchestrated dinner and entertainment nights. Step outside the clubhouse and you’ll find two Har-Tru tennis courts. These two surfaces have been completely renovated and are lighted for night play. The club offers women’s, men’s and mixed doubles tennis programs for members. You’ll also find 4 lighted pickleball courts. If you’re not familiar with the game, pickleball is a low impact,

Adjacent to the courts is the heated pool and spa. All residents have access to the master pool and spa, in addition to their “community” pool. The master pool is heated during the winter for maximum use and is the perfect place to spend time with friends or guests, especially since food and beverage is available pool side. Olde Hickory Golf and Country Club offers single family homes - many of which overlook the golf course. Choose from one and two story single family homes and attached and detached villas, all with amenities far beyond what you would expect in a bundled community. The guard gate is manned 24/7/365, providing added security and convenience. At Olde Hickory you will find a friendly, small town atmosphere in an attractive natural setting where exceptional service and professionalism are the rule, not the exception and excellence in golf and country club living finds a home. For many current residents, Olde Hickory’s vacation program was the first step towards home ownership. Potential home buyers can experience firsthand all that Olde Hickory has to offer. A Perfect Day In Paradise By Wayne Mills If you are a golf fan on the Gulf Coast

of Florida there is no better way to spend a day or a few days than at the Chubb Classic, a PGA Tour Champions tournament. Held in Naples, the crown jewel city of Southwest Florida, the Chubb Classic has made it’s home there for 30 years, the longest running Champions Tour event held in one metropolitan area. The Twin Eagles Club, located on 1,115 acres off Immokalee Rd, hosted for the seventh consecutive year and 12th overall. “Hosting this event for over a decade has

been an honor for the Twin Eagles Club and the Ronto Group,” said Andrea Bach, General Manager of the Twin Eagles Club. “This event allows us to represent our community offerings on a local and national scale, which draws new members and residents every year. On top of that, our club will always be proud to support an event that has brought golf’s greatest legends to Naples for 30 years.” The Chubb Classic is contested on The Talon Course, (one of two courses at Twin Eagles) designed by golf legend Jack Nicklaus and his son Jack II. The Talon, playing over 7,100 yards from the tips is the perfect Florida course to test these legends of the game. With fairly generous landing areas off the tee the challenge is the approach shots into greens that are invariably guarded by tight bunkering and water hazards allowing for difficult pin placements. the green the subtle undulations regularly confound the games best players. On Friday we were very fortunate to have been hosted by the Octagon Group who operate the event for Chubb. We were given VIP passes and Honorary Observer tags that allowed us inside the ropes to follow a threesome of two-time US Open champion Lee Janzen, two-time Masters Champion Jose Maria Olazabal and the pride of Mexico, Esteban Toledo. With balmy temperatures in the low 80’s and a gentle breeze Friday at the Chubb Classic it was a true Naples Chamber of Commerce day. The Talon was in superb condition to test the likes of John Daly, Steve Stricker, Bernard Langer, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Colin Montgomerie, Mark O’Meara, Ian Woosnam, Peter Jacobsen and 70 other great players. Walking inside the ropes with long time professional golfers offers a unique perspective on how they ply their trade. Although PGA Tour Champions Tour events are nocut tournaments which takes some of the pressure off they are playing for big moneythe winner takes home $240,000 out of the $1.6 million purse. Our players were all business on the course. There was very little conversation between the them other than acknowledgment of a good shot and practically none with us Honorary Observers. The only discussions that took place were between the player and their caddy. They were totally focused on every shot.

Janzen, 53, an Orlando resident who went to Florida Southern, had finished 10th the week before in Boca Raton. He started off his round on the 10th tee with a sloppy three putt bogey 5. He birdied the next hole and went on to shoot sixunder par 66 for the round. Janzen would ultimately finished tied for second at 15 under par for the three round tournament. Olazabal finished at 7 under for the week and Toledo at 5 under. Although every player in the field is over 50 years old (and some over 60) these guys can all still really play. They all have great tempo to their swings, strike the ball solidly every time, are great course managers and make an extraordinary number of putts. When hitting drivers they regularly get them out there 280-300 yards and are hitting a lot of 7 irons from 180. Being up close and personal is an enlightening experience to just see how these guys manage their games. Yes, distance is important particularly to leave the shortest club in their hands for approach shots and to be able to reach par 5’s in two but positioning is most important. There were plenty of times they played short or wide into greens to avoid trouble. Their ability to control distance and trajectory is just amazing.

Since Twin Eagles and Chubb have been working together on the event for many years they have the administration down to a science making for a very comfortable, easy and relaxed vibe everywhere. Champions Tour tournaments are generally more mellow than regular PGA Tour stops but the Chubb Classic is pure enjoyment all day long. From the nearby off-property parking to the comfortable shuttles to the friendly ticket takers to the marshals, to the signage, the entire Chubb Classic is very easy to navigate.

As part of our VIP package we were treated to access to the Legends Lounge above the 18th green which provided a much appreciated respite at the turn (we started on the 10th hole) for excellent food and beverage and a great view down on the 18th green. After finishing up our round on the 9th hole with handshakes all around we retired to the Taste of SW Florida area, another of our VIP perks. In a cordoned off area the Taste had numerous vendors offering all sorts of food treats from BBQ, to seafood, to pretzels and cookies all washed down with lots of different craft beer and spirits. Adjacent to the Taste was access to a club demo area at the driving range presented by PGA Superstore with access to top line pro equipment by some of the big name club manufacturers. All in all our visit to the Chubb Classic was just a perfect day in paradise.

David Frost on the Chubb Classic We got the chance to speak to David about his experience on the PGA Tour Champions. Competitively, what’s the difference between the PGA Tour and the PGA Tour Champions? On the PGA Tour you are still trying to establish yourself. When you come to the Champions Tour, you have a history and people understand who you are and that you’re able to win. Southwest Florida loves having the Chubb Classic here in our backyard – are there any points on the course that you’d highlight for the spectators? The first tee is always nice and lively – it’s a nice little setup where the crowd stands down the right side and behind you on the tee box. Eighteen is one of the toughest finishing holes on our tour, so it makes it very exciting.

We’ve come to really connect with the First Tee Kids because of our tournament at Pebble Beach each year. When you get there, you see the kids’ enthusiasm. For that to trickle down to the chapters is incredible. The kids work very hard to be there, and it’s unbelievable to read the stories that they write about how golf has changed their life.

You have two passions in life – golf and wine. Can you tell me a little more about your winery? Having golf to earn a living from is something that I could’ve never imagined. I’m third generation in the wine business. My grandfather bought a winery in 1932 that was The First Tee Program is an integral part of this event and the established in 1693. GREAT Real Estate Opportunities In SWFL Golf Communities! By Joe Morgan-GOLF HOME GURU Since 2006, I’ve had the good fortune to show thousands of Southwest Florida (Naples; Bonita Springs; Estero; Ft. Myers) golf community single family homes and condos to hundreds of prospective buyers and tenants. These showings have included residences in almost-80 different golf communities, and sales in over-50

various golf communities. The needs, wants, and objectives of every customer have been personalized by their own individual situation…and my goal has always been to help each one of them find the golf home/golf community that will best fit their personal budget, golfing habits & ability, and family lifestyle. But, even with their diverse backgrounds and preferences, nearly every customer has asked me the same basic—and extremely important—question…”Is NOW the right time to buy a home in a Southwest Florida golf community?” With the roller coaster ride that both the national real estate market and our local area have experienced during the past 12-years, the honest answer to this question has obviously been very fluid, depending upon when it was asked. But, to formulate an answer to this question for the current period of time, I’d like to start with these key general observations regarding the current condition of SWFL golf communities…

• Many prices are still at VALUE levels—Our local real estate market started it’s turnaround 5-6 years ago, and prices have been increasing since then. However, unlike the “bubble” years, this growth has been modest and controlled, and local golf community real estate prices are—in most cases—still significantly below their peak years. • Interest rates are still relatively close to historic low levels—All types of mortgages are still hanging around the 4.0% mark, and even lower. Actually, 60%+ of our buyers pay cash. • Spectacular golf homes are still available—Even though the inventory in all of our golf communities is significantly below what it was during the recession, many of the available single family homes and condos (resale and new construction) feature fabulous upgrades and amenities, decorator furnishings, and incredible golf course views. • Golf communities are much healthier now—A significant number of local golf communities encountered major financial problems during the housing downturn. However, strong real estate and membership sales, coupled with new ownerships, new developers, creative new builder relationships, much-needed changes in bylaws, and significant reductions in membership fees have dramatically improved their profitability and their prospect of on-going financial success. These favorable conditions have actually imposed a need for urgency on the part of anyone who is currently planning to buy in one of our local golf communities, because… • Professional investors—recognizing opportunities—re-entered the real estate market and gobbled up many of the best bargains, sometimes buying multiple condo units at once. • Rapidly-improving sales during each of the past 5-6 years have significantly reduced single family home and condo inventory in golf communities, in most cases down to a 6-12 month inventory level. Some subdivisions within these communities have even lower availability.

REVIEW

• Some of the best value homes on the market are once again experiencing multiple offers, and/or selling prices that exceed asking prices. In addition, many Southwest Florida real estate experts feel that our local home sales will get even stronger if the stock market’s current growth somewhat slows down, or goes thru a correction. They feel that the rapid, sustained growth of the stock market— although creating wealth for our potential buyers—has “discouraged” them from purchasing vacation homes because they didn’t want to pull their money out of a consistent growth market. However, a gradual stock market correction may encourage them to diversify into more real estate.

So, the obvious answer to the question is… NOW is definitely a GREAT TIME to buy your “dream” golf home in Southwest Florida! And, one more tip for those of you that are TRULY SERIOUS BUYERS…the March/ April/May period is your BEST TIME to negotiate a GREAT PRICE because the Sellers know that their prospective buyers are about to head north, and they won’t return until the next January/February! TIPS

Master Swing Tips by Steve Anderson, PGA Master Professional

You may have heard the golf analysts on TV saying; “He has great lag in his swing!” If you’re not sure of what that is, here’s a quick explanation of what it is and how it can help your game.

The photo shows one of my great students named Gil, about half way down into his downswing. Gil consistently bombs them out there well over 300-yards. His hands are nearing waist high, but if you look at his club and specifically the clubhead, you’ll see that it’s still behind his head. His club is, ‘lagging’ behind, meaning it’s coming down last. The club is still cocked back over 90-degrees. It’s easy to see that he’s stored up his power and that right at the ball there will be a tremendous unleashing (un-cocking) of the club into the ball which will give him great power. Most high-handicappers tend to un-cock the club too soon and they, ‘lose their angle’ coming down. The club has already un-cocked before impact so they don’t have a lot of power as they strike the ball. Try pulling your arms and hands down to increase your lag and you’ll be bombing them out there in no time.

TIPS

Top of Swing Master Swing Tips by Steve Anderson, PGA Master Professional The top of the swing is one of the more individual positions of the swing. Just looking at the Tour Pros you can see that quite clearly. Jack Nicklaus had his arms and club in a very upright position. Ben Hogan was very flat. Dustin Johnson has his wrists in a bowed position while John Daly has a huge overswing. These and many great players have their own individual positions at the top, and they can all be considered correct. The majority of good players however share some positions that can make it easier for them, (and you) to return the club squarely to the ball, and that’s what I prefer to teach my own students. The photo of me, (a lefty), shows a few checkpoints that can improve your own ball-striking and consistency. My left forearm and elbow are pointing directly down, in a vertical position. My right arm is at a 45-degree angle, and my club is pointing down my target line. These positions make it easier to drive down into the ball with power and accuracy, and can keep your swing simple and repeatable which is always a good thing.

3 Strategies to Cure the Yips in Golf Do you struggle with executing short putts, getting off the tee with ease, or feeling confident with your shots around the green? The challenge in working with golfers who suffer from the yips is not eliminating the physical yip, but overcoming the bad thoughts (of hitting a poor shot or getting a poor outcome) that are producing the yips. The solution is to address the root cause, not the symptom. Your shots are a reflection of your thoughts. Therefore, you must fix your thinking in order to fix your swing. Here are 3 strategies to help free you from the yips 1 - Reset Your Self-Image The first step to overcoming your yips is to stop thinking of yourself as a golfer with a yip problem. This may sound silly because it’s so simple, but it works. Fixating on how many times you’ve yipped will simply set you up to repeat those yipped shots. The more you begin to see yourself as a golfer who can swing freely, because you invest time thinking about when you have (instead of when you haven’t), the more that better self-image will become your reality, and the more you will produce better shots.

2 - Reset Your Expectations Prior to any shot with which you have struggled, you need to actively remain in control of your thoughts. Are you expecting to yip, or are you expecting to swing freely? The choice is yours. You can talk yourself into hitting a good shot just as easily as you may be in the habit of talking yourself into hitting a bad one. Take active control of your expectations and make sure they are directing you toward the shot you want to hit every time. 3 - Reset Your Routine How you think about and prepare to hit every shot is within your control, and will determine the quality and consistency of your shots. A good pre-shot routine enables you to play without the noise of technical swing thoughts. Unfortunately, golfers with the yips are often overly focused on fixing their technique to solve their problem. The solution is simplifying your pre-shot thoughts to how your good swing feels, rather than how to technically swing the club correctly. Good feel in the practice swing will enable you to focus on repeating that same good feel when you’re over the ball. This approach will keep your mind in play, rather than practice mode on the course. If you struggle with the yips, confidence, a bad attitude or some other mental interference that’s preventing you from consistently playing at your best, don’t you think it’s time to start playing great? Experience the Citrus Golf Trail By Ryan Ruppert

Relatively speaking, I’m a newcomer

to Florida. I’ve loved living in the state and have been to all the biggest destinations – from Tampa, Sarasota (my home), to Naples on the ‘Golf Coast’, to Orlando, Palm Beach, Jacksonville, Miami, and even Tallahassee. Admittedly, I didn’t know what – or better, where – Sebring was. Just a short drive from anywhere on the ‘Golf Coast’, Sebring is an incredible destination where you can take advantage of exceptional golf at value prices. In fact, golfers can stay and play for as little as $99 per person including golf, room, and a complimentary breakfast.

This year I was invited to the Citrus Golf Trail Media Classic – and since it’s unlikely that I’ll be invited back (bad behavior), I thought that I’d share the incredible experience that is the Citrus Golf Trail. We checked into the Inn on the Lakes in Sebring. It’s a quaint family owned hotel centrally located in Sebring, between two large and beautiful lakes. I couldn’t believe how modern and beautiful the room was when I checked in, it was the perfect place to relax after a long day. After checking in, we quickly departed to the Sun ‘N Lakes Golf Club. The club has consistently been ranked among the best in Florida, and it lived up to its reputation. Sun ‘N Lakes features 36 holes – the Deer Run Course designed by Don Dyer and the Turtle Run Course designed by Charles Ankrom.

REVIEW

We played nine holes from each course. The courses were challenging and designed like many of the best courses here on the coast. The designers used water, clever layout, and the beautiful landscape to create an exceptional experience. The Deer Run Course features length and challenging green complexes, while the Turtle Run Course puts more emphasis on accuracy than distance. At the end of the day we went to Cowpoke’s Watering Hole to celebrate a great day of golf. We need to talk about Cowpoke’s. Cowpoke’s is an institution in Sebring that’s been around for over 30 years. It’s not for the faint of heart. If you love steak and you think that the gator you saw on the course looked tasty – then Cowpoke’s is the place for you. You’ll get fried food, including gator, tender steaks, heavy drinks, and a great country style atmosphere. If you serve a phenomenal ribeye, you’ll get a good review from me, so Cowpoke’s gets five stars for providing a delicious indulgence of southern style cooking.

Next on our list of attractions was Pinecrest Country Club. Pinecrest was designed by Donald Ross in 1926 and has been recently restored. It’s surrounded by and is a part of Florida’s history. The most visible historical point is the Pinecrest Hotel – which was a major destination when the rich and famous would take the train to vacation in Sebring. Frequent guests at the hotel included Al Capone, Babe Ruth, and Franklin D. Roosevelt. The Pinecrest Country Club itself was part of history in the late 50s, when it hosted the first nationally televised PGA event, the World Championship of Golf. Players included Sam Snead, Gardner Dickinson, Don January and the winner, Dr. Carey Middlecoff. The course at Pinecrest is stunning. There are no condos or homes bordering the fairways, instead, the course winds through natural wooded areas and orange groves. The course features false

It’s a truly unique 6400-yard course with lots of water, drivable par fours, and several great risk/reward opportunities. This is a course that calls for strategy and accuracy, and you’re guaranteed to have a fun time.

Another day in Sebring brought more great food and drink. We had the chance to visit Eighteen East, a restaurant and bar that was founded by a retired police officer from Indiana. It’s a wonderful place to enjoy a laid-back meal with Midwest classics. We also enjoyed a gourmet meal at Chicanes, the hotel restaurant at the Inn on the Lakes. This is a great place to enjoy a high-end meal in a luxurious setting. I highly recommend the ribeye (you

This course is among my favorites in Florida because of the natural beauty of the setting. It was designed by Dave Harman who patterned it after the Kauri Cliffs in New Zealand. It’s a great track that plays 7141 yards with a rating of 74.7 and a slope of 138 from the black tees. It’s a challenging course and a great way to conclude three days of championship golf. How do you conclude an epic golfing trip with great friends? You go to an internationally renowned racetrack. Our final stop in Sebring was the Sebring International Raceway. It’s America’s oldest road racing track, with over six decades of storied history. The legendary circuit evolved from Hendricks Field, a World War II airbase used to train B-17 combat crews. Sebring is a phenomenal place to visit in March – because on the third Saturday of March, the giants of sports car racing are challenged to one of the world’s most grueling endurance tests. For 12 hours, the best in the sports car racing scene drive the 3.74-mile track for glory.
