TaylorMade Golf now driving the Masters T
HE 2014 Best Ball Challenge Final will be held over 3 days in conjunction with The Taylormade World Masters Golf Tournament and Go Golfing PTY LTD. Club golfers are set to be the big winners with TaylorMade Golf signing on as title sponsor for the 19th annual World Masters Golf Championship on the Gold Coast from 19 to 25 October 2014. The TaylorMade announcement marks a new beginning for this tournament which was well known as the Mitsubishi Masters. Mitsubishi Motors had sponsored the tournament since it started 19 years ago. Hosted by Go Golfing, Managing Director Peter McCarthy said he was grateful for Mitsubishi Motors long term support and excited about what TaylorMade Golf will bring to the event. “Mitsubishi was Go Golfing’s first ever sponsor and their support allowed us to present a tournament that has been enjoyed by more than 13,000 golfers over the past 18 years. While it may take me a little while to stop calling this tournament the Mitsubishi Masters, there is genuine excitement around what TaylorMade Golf brings to the experience.” TaylorMade Golf is well known the world over as the leading manufacturer of golf equipment for tour players and everyday

golfers. Australia’s own Jason Day, Sergio Garcia, Dustin Johnson, Paula Creamer and Jessica Korda are among the tour winners playing TaylorMade. Part of sporting giant adidas, TaylorMade also have Ashworth and Adams Golf in their brand portfolio. The TaylorMade World Masters Golf Championship is open to male and female golfers aged 35 and over. There is 18 age and handicap divisions, guaranteeing golf-
ers compete and play with golfers their own age and standard. Players enjoy a professional tournament experience as well as nightly social and entertainment events headlined by a welcome dinner featuring international comedy and a gala presentation dinner. There’s over $100,000 in prizes which must be won and a car, overseas golf tours and luxury golf holidays are among the major prize draws.
Jerome Ballard from Twin Creeks in Sydney has an app on his phone that counts down the days to the World Masters. “This will be my 13th straight year. It’s just a sensational event, very social, great value and the highlight of my golfing year. It’s also hassle free as Go Golfing book my flights, accommodation, golf transfers and valet my clubs from course to course. I love it.” The success of the World Masters on the Gold Coast inspired Go Golfing in 2000 to start the Wrest Point Masters in Hobart. Fifteen years on this event continues to attract 400+ golfers for what is arguably Australia’s best ‘week of golf’. Go Golfing’s plans for worldwide expansion of Masters tournaments has got off to a great start with 600 golfers competing in the inaugural Centara World Masters in Thailand. China and Vietnam are also on the drawing board. Starting with the Mitsubishi Masters 19 years ago, Go Golfing Travel now takes golfers all over Australia and to 20 countries for tournaments, tours and holidays as well as hosting record numbers of international visitors here to enjoy Australia’s golf and attractions. GOLF EVENT
Nelson Festival of Golf, 2014
C
ONSIDERING playing in a multiround tournament this year? ... then this is the one for you to enter. At last year’s inaugural event, it was dubbed the “friendly tournament” as everyone involved, players and organisers, had such a great time! The tournament is staged at Nelson, Greenacres and Motueka Golf Courses with two days to be played on the highly regarded Nelson Golf Course which hosted the 2014 New Zealand Amateur Championships in April this year, and received great reviews from the top players in the country and Nelson will also host the 2015 Seniors Championships in February. The courses are all very different, giving the players a real challenge for the week. Nelson being a true links course, whereas Motueka is a mature parkland course, with Greenacres offering a mix of challenging waterfront and parkland holes. Tournament dates for 2014 Nelson Festival of Golf are Monday 20 - Friday 24 October with a rest day on the Wednesday to allow competitors to put their feet up, get out and about to visit the many attractions the region has to offer or get some practice for the next two days of golf. The tournament dates again coincide with the Nelson Arts Festival - a great bonus for non playing partners to enjoy when making the trip
to Nelson. Non playing partners are also very welcome to join us for the major prize giving dinner on the Friday evening. The organising committee has decided to keep the number of entries to 128, the same as last year. This created both a competitive yet friendly environment for all the participants. By the end of the week players had played with and made new friends with golfers from all over New Zealand. Tournament Director, Derek Drysdale, said, “at the final prize giving it was really pleasing to hear many of the competitors saying how much they’d enjoyed their week, as we tried to create a tournament that mixed both great golf and great fun, and it seems we did just that! “We are delighted that we have had many of last year’s entrants already registered to enter the tournament again this year,” Derek said. “So if you are keen to enjoy a week of golf in October in the stunning Nelson region, now is the time to register to confirm your place.” Entry forms and full details are available on our website www.nelsongolf.co.nz/festivalofgolf or call us on 03-548-5029 for more information. Sponsorship has been secured from, Waimea Family Estate Wines, Taylor Made Golf, 4 Seasons Home & Leisure and Total Golf and as always the event organisers ask that all competitors support our sponsors
whenever possible. Without the support of such sponsors, we would not be able to offer such wonderful prizes. For instance this year the hole-in-one prizes are still being finalised, but we will be offering a wonderful hot tub spa pool from 4 Seasons Home & Leisure and $5k of golf equipment from Total Golf for all competitors to win for that magic shot, an “Ace in the Hole”. We will also be running our lucky draw prizes, where each day, 4 lucky competitors will win vouchers from our chosen restaurant partners, to enjoy some delicious food during their stay in the region. At the time of printing we are delighted to confirm that the following Nelson restaurants have all intimated their involvement in our tournament prize scheme: Lonestar Restaurant, The Vic’s Brew Bar and the Speight’s Ale House. The event itself will be for individual and team stableford scores contested at Nelson on the Monday and Friday, Motueka on the Tuesday and Greenacres on the Thursday. There will be daily prizes for individual and team scores and weekly overall prizes for individuals. The Entry fee includes four rounds of golf, individual and team competitions, golf gift and a two-course dinner to be held during the final prize giving at the Nelson Golf Club on the Friday evening, where we are planning a party atmosphere
to finish the week off in style! Organisers want to build on the great success of last year’s tournament. They invite you to register now and enjoy the challenging competition offered on the variety of different courses along with the opportunity to widen your golfing experiences, meet new friends and most of all enjoy the week. The golf days will start with a 9.15am shotgun start basis ensuring that all players are back in the clubhouse around the same time providing a tense yet light-hearted atmosphere for the daily prize giving. Play Four in Dunedin F
OR the first time, Dunedin’s four championship golf courses will host a four-course golf tournament. The tournament will run over five days, from Monday 27 October to Friday 31 October 2014, with participants playing one of each of the four courses on the Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. Thursday will be a non-golfing day, allowing participants the opportunity to experience other uniquely Dunedin attractions the city has to offer. The tournament will be staged at
Chisholm Park, Otago, St Clair and Taieri Lakes, with each course offering a different golfing experience. Chisholm Park is a true links course with beach surrounds, Otago is a mature parkland course within minutes of the city centre, St Clair is nestled on a cliff amongst pine trees and native bush and offers magnificent ocean and city views, and Taieri Lakes is situated in the North Taieri countryside with treelined fairways and three lakes that come into play on four holes.
Play Four in Dunedin is an opportunity to showcase Dunedin’s high quality golf courses and wider city attractions and is planned to be an annual event on the golfing calendar. The event itself will be for individual and team stableford scores, and gross for seniors, with daily prizes awarded for best men’s, best women’s, best team and any two’s scored during the day. There will also be a prize giving dinner on Friday 31 October, with major prizes being awarded
for best men’s, best women’s and best team scores. GOLF TRAVEL GOLF TRAVEL
Ramblings from the 2014 US Masters Tour night at the Hotel Aiken with the rowdy crowd singing “Khe Sanh” in unison was a top way to wrap up an amazing day.
Seeing the Masters live at Augusta remains a bucket-list dream for just about every golfer. Go Golfing’s annual tour to the Masters makes this dream a reality and Tour Manager Tracey-Lea Tiley shares her first Masters tour.
The Final Day
O
UR welcome dinner at Pinehurst allowed us to get to know each other in a relaxed environment via a calcutta to decide Masters winners, and a thoroughly entertaining fireside chat with player agent, Tony Bouffler who shared what it’s like to live life ‘inside the ropes’. After 3 days of golf at Pinehurst, we were on the way to the Masters! This was the day the group had been waiting for – to set foot on this sacred turf. I have to admit I was just as wide-eyed as my guests!!! First stop, the practice tee. A large grandstand is positioned behind the tee, everyone has great views and the timing of my arrival was superb. Adam Scott had just made his way to the range and was welcomed by the huge roar. Jimenez was also warming up, complete with stogie cigar and flowing ponytail. Among the usually conservative golfing community he is a breath of if not quite fresh, then freshly lit air! It’s a congenial atmosphere that has complete strangers strike up a conversation – everyone loves an Aussie here! On the 1st Tee, I had the pleasure of watching Matt Jones, Mike Weir (who later nailed a hole-in-one), and The Walrus

Left, Phil Mickelson and kids. Right, Pinehurst. PHOTOS: TRACEY-LEA TILEY (Craig Stadler). What you don’t see on TV when you’re on the 1st hole is the undulation. I was surprised by just how hilly the layout is and my hind quarters felt it the next day! After the fried food of the ‘deep south’ I needed a good walk and what a place to do it! Having watched Bernard Langer (so incredibly stylish for a gentleman of a certain age!) and Vijay on the 10th it was time to walk the walk. So off to the 15th/16th/17th, a great spot to watch the players in a more relaxed atmosphere, skipping balls across the lake. Par 3 Tournament at The Masters is such a special day. Whilst the layout is typical Augusta -challenging with dramatic changes in elevations, framed by pine trees and azaleas, it is undeniably a different feel to the business end of the Masters Course. Watching the players interact with
their families is an absolute highlight – seeing tomorrows legends with mini putters proudly striding down the fairways with their famed dads/husbands/grandfathers is great fun (cue Jason Day’s little boy – what a swing, one handed!). Perhaps the largest roars and cheers came for three of the games elder statesmen; seeing Arnie (Palmer) and watching the effortless play of the Golden Bear and Gary Player, you appreciate just how great they still are. And they gave plenty of love back to the spectators – they sure know how to work a crowd! By this stage our charming southern village of Aiken and base during the tournament was starting to rev up and Wednesday night was karaoke night. There were some brilliantly talented vocalists on tour and within our local operations team (myself excluded). Great fun and a memorable
Dawn had risen on the final day at The Masters and many of our group had varying strategies to land themselves the best view. For some it was a start at the crack of dawn and a scramble to the 18th green to place their chair down. Others decided to sit at the 16th or Amen Corner and spend the morning following their favourite players. I walked the course proudly following leading (Australian) amateur, Oliver Goss for the first nine holes. What a talent and such a cool and composed young man. Freddy Couples ‘All American Guy’, clearly the coolest man on the course, was welcomed at every tee and green with hearty cheers and a standing ovation. We watched Bubba launch a massive drive down the 10th – it’s crazy how far he drives a ball! My own Masters strategy was to make my way with a couple of hours to play to the 18th and get a spot before the crowds descended. Worked brilliantly! I was inline with the pin, 3rd row back with a perfect view of the hole and green. From Scotty through to Bubba’s last putt – this was better than I had ever hoped or dreamed! » For more information about the Go Golfing US Masters Tour for 2015, Tracey Lea would be happy to talk with you on +61 7 5536 3280.
