ow. That was my initial reaction to Lydia Ko’s win in the World Ladies’ Masters in Taiwan last month. Then I kept asking myself why I was so surprised. Ko had already won four professional golf tournaments. This was just win number five. What’s more the win was hardly a bolt from the blue. She had already attained a world ranking of six and was clearly a leading contender for the tournament from day one. So why was I so surprised? The reason – it was her first win as a professional. For some reason, being a professional, makes all the difference. The most obvious difference was she got to keep the money. For the first time the winner’s cheque did not go to the person she beat. The first prize of $US150,000 ($NZ181,000) was hers. But the wow factor mainly stems from the fact she had only just turned pro. It was only just over six weeks earlier she was an amateur. Technically, as an amateur, golf was a game she played. But as a pro, it’s her job. When she travelled overseas she would no longer write the words school student on the immigration card as her occupation. She could now write

golf professional. Many a player has struggled making the transition from amateur to professional. There are numerous instances of top-ranked amateurs becoming little more than battlers on the world’s golf tours. Suddenly the nervousness of sinking a putt to win a tournament is nothing compared to sinking a putt to make the cut. If you don’t make the cut your income for the week, perhaps months, is zero. And that’s why winning as a pro makes all the difference. It’s coming of age. It’s like saying this is what I do for a living and I can make a good living out of it. It’s no longer a game I play for a bit of fun. Instead it’s my job that I can continue to play as a game for a bit of fun. Adding to the wow factor was Ko’s first win as a professional came at the tender age of 16 and that she needed special dispensation to turn pro. The Ladies’ Professional Golf Association (LPGA) does not usually permit its players to join its tour until the age of 18 but made an

exception in Ko’s case. The LPGA does not elaborate on the reasons for granting dispensation but one comment made by its commissioner Michael Whan about Ko at the time was: ``It is not often that the LPGA welcomes a rookie who is already a back-to-back LPGA tour champion.” That was in reference to Ko winning the Canadian Open in 2012 and then defending the title last August. In other words the LPGA was saying Ko would not be out of her depth. But that would not have been the sole reason for allowing Ko to join the LPGA tour. It would have also seen that Ko copes with the pressures off the golf course such as dealing with the news media, displaying a mature attitude and presenting a good image for the game. In addition Ko is intelligent and has been able to succeed academically despite a very busy golfing schedule. We now look forward to Ko at the New Zealand Open in Christchurch from January 31-February 2 and wonder how many wow factors she will continue to show us.

here are no bounds to the career of New Zealand golfing phenomenon Lydia Ko, says her former coach Guy Wilson. Ko racked up win No 5 in a professional tour event when taking out the Swinging Skirts World Ladies’ Masters in Taiwan last month. The win was significant in that it came just six weeks after becoming a professional golfer – and all at the tender age of 16. But to achieve so much at such a young age only underlined what she could achieve, said Wilson who last month ended 11 years with Ko. ``I think she’s already proven she’s already capable of making history wherever she goes,’’ Wilson told Golfer Pacific from Auckland. Ko’s world ranking rose to No 4 following her win in Taiwan. Wilson believes she is capable of reaching the No 1 spot once she becomes familiar with being on tour. ``Now that she is playing against the best, it’ll be interesting to see how long it takes for her to stamp some dominance and start to rise to the top of the world,’’ Wilson said.

``As we can see it, it has only really just begun. There is plenty more opportunities for her now and I think it is safe to say she will be winning more and more events. This 2014 year is going to be a pretty big year.’’ The fact that Ko made the transition from amateur to professional status with ease not only re-affirmed her outstanding ability but her ability to cope with pressure, Wilson said. ``She is able to process it as if it was just another day, as if it was just another tournament – not feel the mountain of pressure building up and the expectation behind her to get a result, as most people do. It’s amazing for anybody, regardless of what age.’’ Some players, despite a fine amateur career, can struggle with the move into professional ranks. Wilson had no doubt that would not be the case for Ko who had racked up wins in four professional events as an amateur. ``She has played in that environment for the past year and a half now. It’s not like it was something completely different. ``Although there is more pressure to perform, given that she is now playing for money, she can still get it done.’’ Wilson, however, did agree it was

yet another milestone to win as a professional. `Ì suppose it proved to herself that it wasn’t that a big jump for her. `Ì guess it makes herself feel a little bit less stressed, to say she has got one under the belt and not over-thought it. Although there is more expectation on her, she hasn’t really shown it. `Ìt means what she is doing is pretty damn good and pretty damn consistent, regardless of where and what environment she is in.’’ The win in Taiwan could not be dismissed as a lowly end of year tournament. The field contained four of the world’s top 10-ranked players, including the world No 1, it carried an $US800,000 purse and Ko’s winning cheque was a not to be sneezed at $US150,000 ($NZ180,000). We can now look forward to Ko to defending her title in the ISPS Handa New Zealand Women’s Open at Clearwater in Christchurch from January 31-February 2. Ko last year became the first New Zealander to win the event and at age of 15 became the youngest winner on the Ladies’ European Tour.

Kiwis beat Australia in Vietnam

New Zealand has delivered in the final round of the Asia-Pacific Seniors Championship in Vietnam to win by three strokes from Australia. The Kiwis were consistent with Frank Borren, Michael Barltrop, Murray Martin and Andrew McKechnie all shooting rounds of three-over par 74 in the best four out of six scores format to claim the title. Philip Hunter (76) and Mike Leitch (80) had the non-counting scores in the final round. New Zealand, which recently defeated Australia at the Sanctuary Cove Trophy in Queensland, continued its good form to record a 45-over par team total at The Montgomerie Links in Vietnam. The Asia-Pacific Senior Championship is an individual 54-hole strokeplay event run in conjunction with a team’s event. The best four scores of the six players each day count towards the team total. Meanwhile, Blair Riordan was the best of the Kiwis at the 117th Argentine amateur championship in Argentina. Riordan, who is the No 1 for the Tasman district, qualified 19th with rounds of 72 and 73 but lost in the quarterfinals to seventh seed Joaquin Bonjour by 2 and 1.

Until that point Riordan had enjoyed a fine championship. He defeated Agustin Acuna (3/2), Nicolas Pizzolante (2up) and Alfonso Otoya (19th hole) to reach the final eight players. Kadin Neho, who became the first Northland golfer to win the New Zealand amateur in April, lost in round one to Finnish golfer Teemu Toivonen by 4 and 3. No New Zealand golfer has even won the Argentine amateur with Manawatu golfer Josh Munn coming the closest in 2012 when he finished second. Revenge is sweet for Manawatu-Wanganui in Interprovincials

ew Zealand golf’s most prized amateur men’s teams’ event was won by Manawatu-Wanganui for the first time in nearly 50 years. But more importantly for the Manawatu-Wanganui team the win avenged its agonising defeat of the previous year when beaten in a dramatic final on a second play-off hole. Making the win all the sweeter was it beat Bay Of Plenty in the final. It was Bay Of Plenty that had deprived them of victory the year before. There was no need for a play-off in the 2013 event which played at the North Shore Golf Club in Auckland. ManawatuWanganui disposed of Bay Of Plenty in the final by 4-1/2 to 1/2 to give them the title for the first time since 1964. The Manawatu-Wanganui team was humbled to walk into the clubhouse to a rousing round of applause from their rivals who marked their appreciation for their win. Manawatu-Wanganui manager Russell McDonald, who has been with the side for more than 10 years, said it was a long time coming and a special day for the province. ``These boys have worked so hard for this and the way they won it in the final was just incredible,” he said. ``I have worked with all of these boys for many years and to see them fulfil their potential on this stage is so rewarding. They are such a great team, great mates. They do everything for each other and they never give up. That really showed that this week.” McDonald said it was a special performance and the team was motivated to avenge last year’s loss for Junior Tatana. He had represented the side in the play-off but missed the 2013 tournament because of a back injury. ``Junior had unfinished business after what happened last year and these guys really wanted to do it for him. He has been texting me all day. We couldn’t be happier to get our hands on the trophy.” Manawatu-Wanganui No 1 Joshua Munn, who was inspirational all week for his side, said it was an amazing feeling to be the last team standing. ``We haven’t won this in almost 50 years,” said the 22-year-old. ``I can’t believe that, that is a total joke and I am just pleased we ended that drought. This is a great team and we

Photo: Supplied showed that today.” Manawatu-Wanganui, which beat Wellington 3-1/2--1/1/2 in its semi-final, was consistently excellent across all matches in the final to take the ascendancy away from Bay Of Plenty which had romped into the final with a 5-0 win over Otago in the semi-finals. Munn led the way for his side when he defeated the previously undefeated Bay Of Plenty No 1 Peter Lee by 5 and 4 to set the tone for the day. ``I chipped in on the first hole and it gave me the boost that I needed. From there I played really well and it was the best feeling to walk past the board at the turn and see it all covered in red numbers [for Manawatu-Wanganui].” There were more big margins to celebrate

as fellow New Zealand representative Tyler Hodge won the battle of the left-handers when he defeated Sam Davis 4 and 2. Lachie McDonald showed why he is such a valued team member with a 3 and 2 win over William Howard in the No 3 position. McDonald was named as the player of the tournament when he finished with an impressive record of six wins, a half and a loss during the week. McDonald, 22, said: ``It is a huge honour to win this award. I have worked really hard on my game and to win the award in this company confirms that I am on the right track. I couldn’t be happier.” McDonald believed that his side played to its true potential when it mattered most. ``That is the best we have played all week. We definitely knew we were up against it

with a great side like Bay Of Plenty but we just played fantastic to get it done.” He said the win was great to pay off all the people who had invested in them over the years. ``Manawatu is a really proud golfing province and there is a lot of people who have supported all of the guys in this team for many years. Auckland completes Interprovincial hat-trick

hey played 40 games of golf and won 36-1/2 of them. That statistic underlined the dominance the Auckland team displayed as it marched to its third successive win in the women’s Interprovincial tournament. The Interprovincial is New Zealand’s premier teams’ event and Auckland almost made the 2013 event a one-horse race. It breezed through the preliminary rounds with 27 wins from 30 games before sweeping aside Hawke’s Bay in a semi-final to win 4-1/2 to a 1/2. In the final Auckland was up against Bay Of Plenty but once again the result was one-sided with Auckland winning 5-0. Auckland’s performance at the tournament, sponsored by Toro, was one of the most dominant since it was first held in 1950. It was the first time in 30 years that a team had won three times in a row. The previous occasion was from 198183 when Bay Of Plenty-Thames Valley achieved the feat. Auckland has now won the event a total of 22 times with it nearest rival Bay Of Plenty on 17 wins. Kaye Carroll, the manager of the Auckland team for the past 10 years, said the performance of her girls was a special effort as they totally outclassed every team they played. ``I had a machine team,” said Carroll. ``For them to go through and lose only three games for five days is just amazing. It has to be the best record ever in this tournament.” Carroll, who has bowed out as the Auckland manager after a decade of service, said there were a few factors that made her side so dominant at the excellent Muriwai course in west Auckland. ``Being able to come out here and practice a few times as a team, practice shots in the wind and bunkers and so on was good and we bonded so well. ``This is the most special of all my wins with an Auckland team. This is my swansong. I have been doing this for 10 years and with Auckland winning three in a row I feel like it is time for some fresh blood in the camp. Going out on this moment feels pretty special. I am rapt.” Two of Auckland’s players, Wenyung Keh and Brittney Dryland, both went through the tournament unbeaten. Dryland, who won the player of the 2012 tournament at St Clair, played at No 5 and got her team on the board early in the final with a 3 and 2 win over the big-hitting Rotana Howard. It meant that Dryland had finished two

pressure in the final and we brought it back after nine holes. To have only lost three times throughout the whole week as a team is really cool.” Next year’s women’s Interprovincial will be held at the Lochiel Golf Club in Hamilton.

The two halved their opening eight holes before Kim seized the advantage heading into final nine holes. Kim went on to birdie the par 3 17th to win the match 2 and 1 and secure the winning point for her side. ``It was really cool to sink the winning putt for the team,” said Kim. ``That was a special moment for me. I was disappointed to have my first half this morning [for a 7wins and a half record] but apart from that I had a great week.” Wenyung Keh and Munchin Keh completed the whitewash with wins over Grace Senior (2up) and Alanna Campbell (3/2) respectively.

Munchin Keh was excited, happy and relieved to be named as the champions again. `Ìt was a really tough final,” said the 21-year-old from the Titirangi Golf Club. `Èach match was really close and it was tense out there. To win it for the third time in a row, there is no doubt that this is the best win we have ever had.” Wenyung Keh, who matched her perfect winning record from the team’s win at the Whakatane Golf Club in 2011, was named as the player of the tournament. The 16-year-old from the Pakuranga Country Club enjoyed a remarkable week at No 2 for her side and was humbled to receive the honour. `Ìt means a lot to get this award,” said Keh. “I had a lot to prove this week. I have practiced really hard for this and to be named player of the tournament I feel like I have redeemed myself.” Keh said her team had achieved something special. `Ìt feels really great to have won this title three times in a row. Maori golf scholarship announced for 2014 A scholarship for young Maori golfers has been announced for this year. The scholarship has been designed by New Zealand Maori Golf and New Zealand Golf and will be available to male or female players aged 16-19 who are looking to take their game beyond the domestic level. A press release said the scholarship would be for those looking to achieve golfing success on the world stage. It is also part of a programme to grow the participation of Maori golfers and aid development.

The scholarship would assist with the costs of developing the player primarily through either coaching and/or national order of merit tournament assistance. Consideration would also be given to applicants seeking support for golf equipment. Dean Murphy, chief executive of New Zealand Golf, said the scholarship would be an important tool in developing Maori golf in this country. ``New Zealand Golf has a long and proud history of Maori golfers excelling on the world stage and our partnership with the New

Zealand Maori Golf Association is geared to further that success,” said Murphy. ``The likes of Michael Campbell and Phil Tataurangi have paved the way for Maori golf in this country and we want to build on their success and create a partnership that develops future Maori champions. ``This scholarship will provide greater opportunities for Maori golfers and we look forward to seeing them succeed both on the national and international stage.” It was likely about four players would receive scholarships.

Celebrities line Two new directors for NZ Golf up for NZ Open T Amateurs in their numbers will be playing alongside the professionals in next month’s New Zealand Open in Queenstown. For the first two days of the tournament, sponsored by car manufacturer BMW, on February 27 and 28 there will be a minimum number of 132 professionals and an equal number of amateurs. Each professional will be paired with an amateur to form a twoperson team. The best score by either team member on each hole will count towards the team’s score. The top 35 amateurs from the first two days will qualify for the third day’s play on March 1 and the top 10 will battle it out on the final day, March 2. The first two days will be spread over two courses – Millbrook and The Hills. The final two days will be at The Hills. Those in the tournament proper will contest the New Zealand Open concurrently with the top 60 players (and ties) making the cut for the

final two day’s play. The format of amateurs playing alongside the pros is thought to be the first time it has been used for a national open. A number of amateurs will be of celebrity status. Already confirmed in that category are cricketers Stephen Fleming, Ricky Ponting, Allan Border and Mark Richardson and rugby players Jeff Wilson, Justin Marshall and Nick Farr-Jones. Others include Cris Judd and Phil Keoghan. Judd was one of the judges on television talent quest programme New Zealand’s Got Talent and Keoghan is the host of television reality series, The Amazing Race. The scheduling change of the tournament to February means that no New Zealand Open was held in the 2013 calendar year. There have been three occasions of this in the history of the New Zealand Open (1990, 1999 and 2008) and all were due to the rescheduling of the tournament dates.

Shires, a member of the Royal Wellington Golf Club, has developed a management consulting practice founded on an extensive career in the dairy industry with senior roles across a range of disciplines including leadership and strategy, organisational development and transformation, business development and improvement, change management and coaching and mentoring. New Zealand Golf chairman Paul Fyfe said Howard and Shires would be great additions to the board. ``Mike and Anna have plenty of experience and knowledge to add to the wide and varied business experience of the board of directors and we look forward to working

with them in 2014,’’ he said. ``It is a challenging time for golf in New Zealand but our board is a talented and experienced group of people who are well qualified to meet the challenges head on. New Zealand Golf also announced that director Adrienne Greenwood had been re-appointed for a one-year term. Greenwood, who earlier this year was awarded an Order of New Zealand Merit (ONZM) for services

NZ Golf said Fergus had made a valuable contribution to the sport over the previous five years, most notably as chair of the audit and finance board subcommittee. North Auckland pair wins women’s foursomes

uzette Eastmond and Anne Moir, both members of the Omaha Golf Club in north Auckland, won the 42nd New Zealand women’s senior handicap foursomes. They won the championship division, playing for the NZLGU Salver, out of a record field of 160 players. The 80 pairs competing in the four-day event, played on Northland’s links style course of the Mangawhai Golf Club. Eastmond and Moir were seeded seventh after Monday’s net qualifying round and won their first round match 2 up against the Nelson pairing of Maree West and Shirley Otton. They then breezed to a 7 and 6 win against Mangawhai locals Lesley Tolhopf and Barbara Chitty before scoring a 4 and 3 win over another local pairing of Diane Dunlop and Claudia Dowson in the semi-final. Eastmond and Moir had a long wait for their afternoon final against the Pupuke pairing of Jan Aickin and Mary Catherwood. Aickin and Catherwood went to the 20th hole to win their semi-

final against the Mangawhai pair of Sharyn McLean and Christine Bygrave. The 20th hole, in this semi-final, turned out to be a dramatic finish with Aickin and Catherwood playing three of the tee, when their first shot was lost in the direction of hazard and trees but which no-one saw land, and therefore had to take a penalty as a lost ball. McLean and Bygrave then got stuck in the notorious Mangawhai sandy wasteland areas, which eventuated with both pairs taking five shots to reach the green. Both two putted but with a shot for Aickin and Catherwood, they secured the win. McLean and Bygrave had been the top qualifiers with a net round of 64. In reaching the semi-final, Aickin and Catherwood had had earlier wins over Sina McKay and Diane Spiers (Waihi), 2up, and Moria Pullman and Lesley Ferguson, from Ngunguru on the 19th. In the final Eastmond and Moir took command to be 4 up in the middle stages but McLean and Bygrave fought back to take the

Rocco Mediate to attend NZ Open

ne of the drawcards for next month’s New Zealand Open is Rocco Mediate who was involved in one of the most dramatic finishes to a United States Open. Mediate and Tiger Woods were tied at the completion of the regular 72 holes for the 2008 US Open and the next day headed out to play another 18 holes to decide the winner. But after the extra 18 holes they were still tied and a sudden death play-off was required which Woods won on the first hole to make for a marathon 91 holes of golf. Mediate won six times on the PGA Tour and last year joined the Champions Tour on which he quickly made his mark by winning at his second start. His Champions Tour winnings in his debut year totaled $US1.3 million to take his career earnings to $US16.6 million. Mediate posted his 6th PGA Tour victory at the Frys.com Open in 2010, aged 47 years 10 months, to become the oldest wireto-wire winner on the PGA Tour since such records had been recorded. Mediate said he looked forward to visiting New Zealand, a country he knew much about but had not previously visited. A self-confessed adrenalin junkie, Mediate would no doubt sample some of the many treats that the Queenstown region has to offer.

nything to do with China inevitably involves mind-boggling numbers. Golf is no exception. Looking out of my hotel room at Mission Hills in China last month I could see a landscape of forested hills. There was no clue that 12 golf courses were hidden out there within the Shenzhen/Dongguan complex, all carved from land suitable for trees but not much else at first glance. Couple this with the 11 other courses owned by the Mission Hills Group on Hainan Island, and you can understand its claim to be the world’s biggest golf club. The latest of these courses – the Rose/ Poulter at Dongguan – was built in a mere year. A team of 20,000 workers in the day were replaced at night by a crew of 10,000 working under floodlights. There is certainly no shortage of labour in China, with well over 5000 employed on the mainland courses, including 3500 caddies (all female). Some three million people visited the golf courses and resorts in the group during 2013. This was all started by David Chu, who owned a cardboard box making factory in Hong Kong, and who saw golf as a way of building international relations. Through

ent attitude towards learning the game. Thirteen British pros are based at the PGA academy in Dongguan, and one told me he had a pupil taking 20 hours of instruction a week at the equivalent rate of $NZ400 per hour, thereby cramming almost a year’s tuition by New Zealand standards into

five days. Given the numbers of wealthy Chinese prepared to invest at this level for themselves, their sons or daughters, it can only be a matter of time before China starts to have some real impact on the world stage of professional golf. The sheer rate of growth of the game in China brings a number of challenges and opportunities with it. There is no PGA

of China, and unlikely to be one for several years. Fully qualified professionals from other PGAs work in the country, including eight from New Zealand. At the moment though, demand exceeds supply so there are many instructors with either bogus or dubious qualifications putting themselves out as so-called PGA coaches. As with many things in China, checking their bona fides is difficult and the lack of a home PGA does not help. This of course is not unique to China, and is one of the key challenges for the World PGA Alliance in protecting the PGA brand and standards. More on this in my next article, but meantime note that Chinese interest in investing in golf in New Zealand is already apparent, as is the increasing number of high-end tourists coming here, recognised in Tourism New Zealand’s golf tourism strategy. We are going to see a lot more of these people and just wait until the first Chinese player wins a major…

Some thoughts of golf professional graduates

he New Zealand Professional Golfers’ Association (NZPGA) held its annual graduation at the Millbrook Resort in Queenstown last month. As the director of education for the NZPGA, I see trainee golf professionals enter the PGA education programme and then also see them graduate. Last year, we had some outstanding graduates entering the PGA and I would like to congratulate Rob Illot (Millbrook Resort) and Sean Riordan (Nelson Golf Club) as joint trainees of the year for 2013. I asked them and some of their year three classmates about becoming golf professionals. Next month’s column will be where they see themselves heading as PGA golf professionals. I would like to thank Rob Illot, Sean Riordan, Kerryn Jamieson (Pukekohe Golf Club), Mathew Davis (Northland Golf Club) and Matt Davis (Ashburton Golf Club) 1. What skills/background did you possess before entering the

NZPGA programme? All loved golf and wanted to make a career of it. Riordan played top amateur golf and played for NZ, Jamieson grew up in his father’s golf shop and had managed golf operations for Club Med in Australia and Asia, Mathew Davis had completed an honours degree in sport conditioning and coaching from the University of the West of England, Illot was a certified physiology, strength and conditioning trainer while Matt Davis played representative golf for Aorangi and had completed business management papers. 2. What were the highlights of the traineeship? Riordan said comradeship and friendships that he made through the programme, Mathew Davis said learning from the senior golf professionals and outside speakers that had helped him develop as a person, Matt Davis said establishing his own junior golf programme at the Ashburton Golf Club and running his own business, Illot said graduation day and the friendships created along the way. He

enjoyed the learning aspect and Riordan said winning the Australian National Futures event in Australia and placing second and third in the other two years.

3. What has most surprised you about the golf industry? Mathew Davis said how much resistance to change there is at some clubs – however he believed that was changing. Matt Davis said golf was still seen as a rich man’s sport. The industry needed to account for the younger generation and find ways to help fund junior programmes to be delivered by the PGA golf professionals. Illot said people’s ideas about the technique of the golf swing, how teaching of the game had evolved. Riordan said because he came from playing the game at a high level, he thought he knew almost everything about golf and the industry. Now after graduating he said he know 10 times more. 4. What are the key skills you have learnt from your last three years in the NZPGA programme?

Matt Davis said club fitting, giving the customer value for money and performance. Coaching programmes; being able help people achieve their golfing goals and dreams. Illot said planning and preparation skills. Riordan said time management; this he believed was the most important skill for him. He had also learned how to help fellow golfers with their game and relay this information to the player. This was a very rewarding skill and he enjoyed the chance to improve someone’s golf game. Jamieson said understanding how we teach golf. Most people have the skills and ability to be better than they are but were unaware of how to improve in the correct manner. The programme had given him a clear direction as how to better teach the game to all levels of golfers and how to educate all golfers so that they have the knowledge and knowhow to improve the game they love. Mathew Davis said time management, learning the science and art of coaching and how to interact with people more effectively – and many other skills too numerous to list here.

he much-maligned strip of land that is known as the West Coast (referred to by locals simply as the Coast) is the venue for the 2014 West Coast Golf Challenge. The second four-day, four-course tournament is to be held at Westport, Reefton, Hokitika and Greymouth on March 4-7. Golf has had a presence on the Coast for over 100 years and has continued to grow and improve from Karamea in the north to Whataroa in the south. One doesn’t need to travel far for a game of golf – there are three 18hole courses at Westport, Greymouth and Hokitika, a 12-hole course at Reefton and nine-hole clubs at Karamea, Ikamatua and Whataroa plus a couple of private nine-hole courses, Caledonian Creek (Moonlight) and Moana (Lake Brunner). Golf is also very affordable on the Coast. Not only are club membership subscriptions among the cheapest in the country – from just over $400 for the 18-hole courses to about $120 for the nine-holers – but every course on the Coast has reciprocal rights to play on every other West Coast course without a green fee. Add to this, several clubs have ‘sister club’ status with clubs from ‘Away’ (that part of the world that is not the Coast) and members are

able to enjoy green-fee free golf when on holiday. For example, Greymouth share green-fee status with McLeans Island, Weedons and Waimakariri Gorge in Canterbury as well as Dannevirke and Patea in the North Island. While the region’s courses don’t claim to be of Augusta quality they are all well presented, particularly when considering most of the maintenance is done by volunteers. Greymouth, Hokitika and Westport are the only Coast clubs which use paid green staff. There is a wonderful variety in the types of course you may play on the Coast, from the true links of Hokitika and tree-lined links of Westport to conventional ‘parkland’ courses like Greymouth and Reefton. While you enjoy the variety of golf available on the Coast you can spend some wonderful hours taking in the spectacular scenery that is such a feature of the region – from Buller in the north, through Grey District and Westland to South Westland. Lakes, mountains and spectacular seascapes are plentiful and scattered throughout the Coast are attractions and activities to please the most discerning traveller – the Glaciers, Punakaiki, Deniston, Tauranga Bay and Shantytown to name but a few – and wherever you find yourself you will also find iconic arts and crafts, fine dining and great people.

Greymouth Golf Club The Greymouth Golf Club is located on Golf Links Road approximately 6km east of Greymouth town centre. The course is acknowledged as having the best manicured fairways of the 18 hole courses on the West Coast, and while not long at about 5600 metres it provides an interesting test of golf. Most of the Club’s major tournaments are played in the period from January to March, starting with the New Year’s Day tournament, followed by the Westland Classic in mid February, and as one leg of the West Coast four course challenge in early March. Hole No 8 is the club’s signature hole. While not long, the 329 metre par 4 dog-leg left has an out-of -bounds on the left. There are also two strategically positioned mature kahikatea to manoeuvre past in the fairway. Sir Bob Charles has described this hole as one of his top 18 Greymouth Golf Club holes of golf in New Zealand. Greymouth’s Kaiata links course really is a gem in the crown of local sporting facilities in Greymouth. Green fees are a competitive $25 per round.

Hokitika Golf Club Play on one of New Zealand’s few true links courses at Hokitika on the West Coast of the South Island. Reefton Golf Club

The club began playing on this course, the Glenburnie course, in 1960, having been previously sited at Waitahu and prior to that, in the centre of the Reefton Race Course. The course has twelve holes, with holes 1-6 also being holes 13-18, although with different tees. Course is a par 72 and 5511 meters. Green fee players and visitors most welcome to play and enjoy the views. Green fees are set at $15/round. Club days are Sundays. The course is open all day, every day, with the greens mown twice weekly. Although there is a small club membership of 75 the high standard of the course is completely achieved through voluntary contributions of time. Golden acquisition complete for Links Hope Island

he acquisition of the Hotel Development site and majority shareholding of Links Hope Island Golf Club is now complete. The acquisition has been made by Golden Horse Nine Dragon Lake Holdings Limited the owner and developer of the 54 hole Dragon Lake Golf Resort in Guangzhou, China, host of the prestigious PGA event, The Royal Trophy. Dragon Lake are also in the final stages of their proposed purchase of the Noosa Springs golf course on the Sunshine Coast. The assets were purchased from Brisbane based Consolidated Properties who Links Hope Island and several other land holdings in Hope Island from Mirvac in 2007. The two prime waterfront hotel and villa development sites total 8,162sqm and have approvals in place for up to 400 resort rooms and 29 permanent residences, situated adjacent to the golf course and private canals. The hotel can integrate with the existing clubhouse which has recently undergone a multi-million dollar refurbishment

– to utilise function rooms, restaurants, lobbies and full line kitchens. The acquisition includes the balance 552 of 990 equity shares for $10 million in the Links Hope Island golf course. The first round of shares were sold individually to private members, with the golf course widely regarded as one of the premium courses in Australia. The sale was marketed by Colliers International. Consolidated Properties Executive Chairman Don O’Rorke stated the sale represented a once-only opportunity to secure integrated hotel and golf course development in the exclusive Hope Island Resort. “We fielded several offers and after considerable review we believe that the offer from Golden Horse Nine Dragons Lake Holding s was the best for the members of Links Hope Island and the community.” At the Media Event held last month to celebrate the acquisition, Mr. Feng Di, Chairman of Golden Horse Nine Dragon Lake Holdings Limited, stated his excitement

The 7th hole facing south can play driver wedge when the prevailing south westerly winds are blowing driver 3 iron, with the green over 47metres in length from front to back pin placement can dictate second shot club selection. COURSE architect Chris Pitman has worked wonders on the redevelopment of this hole and even though it is a relatively short par-five, it now presents a real challenge for all golfers. A fairway, lined with towering trees, demands a controlled tee shot. Driver is the best option and having found a tight landing space with enough distance on the ball, a birdie opportunity opens up. However, the second shot needs to be accurate and the large bunkers and undulating fairways taken into account. If you struggle for distance then you can lay up, but you have to be mindful of the uphill slopes 130 metres out. Club selection

for the third shot is also important if the heavily bunkered green is to be safely reached. Anything wayward will result in a scramble to make par or worse. Add in the effect of the in-your-face prevailing winds and everything just gets a whole lot harder. A tricky two-tiered sloping green rounds out the hole and hopefully a par or better is achieved. Or as one member suggests – you can smash it 290, follow it up with a lazy six iron on to the green and you’re up for an eagle or at worst an easy birdie. But that’s another story!

large pond. A straight shot will miss the large trees to the right and a bunker to the left, not too many problems on a calm day. With spectacular water views in the background, and the green positioned on a small knoll, the wind factor greatly determines the club selection and can have a dramatic effect on any given day.

Located just half an hour from Manukau, you can enjoy the peace of the country while still being close to Auckland at Maramarua Golf Club. You will also experience one of the best golf courses in the region. The eighth hole at Maramarua requires a long tee shot to the right of a wide fairway. The fairway has trees on both sides, which protect out of bounds on the far right and a hazard on the left. Shots to the left hand side don’t get a shot at the green as this is blocked by mature pine trees.

Having placed your 220m-plus drive on the right-hand side of the fairway you have a daunting approach shot over a rock-surrounded pond to a two-tiered green. If the pin is on the top level the landing area is small. Here you will be faced with the decision whether to aim for the top and risk an overshot of play to the lower area and guarantee a difficult two putt. Either way, it’s one heck of a hole!

Mount Maunganui golf Club 18th Par-4

Par 4: Yellow Tees 275 Metres; White Tees 317 Metres; Blue Tees 338 Metres. The 18th green is framed with the superbly designed clubhouse which gives a 180 degree view of the hole from all lounges. The fairway is lined each side with ‘Pohutakawa’ trees, also referred to as the New Zealand Christmas tree as the bright red flowers appear in December

each year. Towering above the clubhouse is Mount Maunganui, or Mauao, is also the name of the extinct volcano which rises above the town. Shrouded in history and legend, the mountain is a dominant feature of the landscape, and a climb to the summit offers amazing views of the surrounding city and ocean.

plays its full distance, particularly if you’re playing into any sort of breeze. Any errant shot right of the green will bring big trouble, so it’s best to favour the left side of the green. It is certainly a memorable hole and to make par or better is very satisfying.

THIS feature hole is a relatively easy par five when playing with a southerly breeze but can be a monster during a strong north westerly. Out of bounds down the right side and evenly spread pot bunkers running down the left side of the fairway stiffen the test. The well bunkered green has a double

bunker on the right in front of the green with the second bunker hidden from view from the fairway. The green can be a difficult to hold approach shots down wind and with a narrow entrance into a long two tiered green there is little room for error. Watch putting down wind and down hill.

Pegasus Golf Course is a beautiful parklands-style par 72 – 18 hole championship golf course close to the centre of Pegasus Town. Defeat of champs highlight for North The Northland men’s golf team rued missed opportunities at the Toro Men’s Interprovincial in Auckland, but they were the only team to beat the eventual champions. While Northland ended up 11th out of the 15 teams at the flagship event, they still have bragging rights over ManawatuWanganui after beating them in a finalhole putt earlier in last week’s competition. Golf Northland development manager Michael Macdonald said that while the week as a whole was disappointing, the highlight was beating the eventual champions. He added that while the week did not go as planned, it was good to see a former Northland player, Sean Masters, in the final playing for Otago. “We had our opportunities, that’s for sure,” he conceded. “There was a little ex-

pectation that we’d do well but it’s a case of expecting it to happen rather than making it happen. The guys have all got talent, it wasn’t quite the week we hoped for, but we’ll be back next year and we’ll build towards those semi-finals because we’ve got the talent to be there. “It was really good for the guys (to play Masters). Chase McKeown ended up playing him (but) Sean won that in the end. “If we had of won (the match against Otago) they wouldn’t have gone through to the final. That’s how close the competition was. It did come down to that last round.” He said about five teams were “on the edge”. Macdonald said a few of the Northland players would train through the summer whereas the others would likely have time off after last week’s event which is the pinnacle for their season. “A few of them are going to stick with it over the summer. Lee (Neumann) and Kadin (Neho) are going to Australia this

month for the Australian Amateur, and with Kadin being current New Zealand Amateur champ he’ll be looking to add the Australian title. 

Cream comes to the top The best players in each age group category prevailed in the Auckland Age Group Championships played at the Aviation Country Club last month. Fresh form an outstanding performance at the Women’s Interprovincial Tournament, The Grange’s Joanna Kim completed her 36 holes in two under par (146) to win the Auckland Girls Under 19 Age Group Championship by seven shots from Royal Auckland’s Jaime Bellingham and Maungakiekie’s Brooke Hamilton, both scoring 153. Whakatane visitor Henry Spring won the Under 16 Boys Champuonship with consistent scores of 73 and 71 to be on level par; a winning margin of four shots over The Grange’s Mason Lee, Huapai’s Jake Meenhorst and Maungakiekie’s Joe Tiplady. It was Waikato representative Nick Coxon who set up the win in the Under 19 Boys Championship with a superb opening 18 holes of six under 66. He foolwed that up with an even par 72 in the afternoon to claim the title by seven shots from North Shore’s Mark Hutson with a further shot back to Waipu’s Braden Keown and The Grange’s James Morrell.

Sam An (Titirangi) upheld his number one status in Auckland Golf last month when he completed the sought after double; the Auckland Strokeplay and the Auckland Matchplay. An top qualified for the matchplay at the strokeplay event and lived up to his ranking by defeating Auck;and number two Tae Koh (Manukau) in an exciting 18 hole final at the Whitford Park Golf Club. He was made to work hard in the final by Koh and didn’t get his own way leading up to the semi final. Harry Na (Aviation) took An to the 17th in the quarter final as did Leonard Powel (Clarks Beach) in the second round. But it was the experienced An who prevailed on a superbly presented golf course.

Interprovincial Tournament by any team in the history of the competition, the Auckland Women’s team totally dominated. Played last month. They breezed through section play winning 27 matches out of 30; 6 games to nil; with the smallest winning margin being 4 matches to 1. In the semi final Auckland defeated Hawkes Bay 4.5 matches to 0.5 and then won the final, 5 matches to nil. The ladies division was won by Catherine Brown with an excellent gross 76, followed by Sheryll Johnson’s net 67, and Di Romley with 40 stableford points. Division Two men’s was won by Mutu Paterson with a gross 79 and net 61 followed by Kerry Millar with 47 stableford points and Matthew Te Patu 44 points. Division One men’s was won by Craig MacDonald with a gross 71, followed by JR on net 66 and Steve Gadsby 41 Stableford’s. There were a lot of two’s on the day, but Di Romley ruled them by getting two two’s on the 6th and the 16th. Smithy nearly got an ace on 11th, plus a lot of players with the surname Johnson who got two’s which was unusual. Ladies closest to the pin on the 6th was Di Romley, and the longest drive winner was Catherine Brown on the 17th. Men’s 16+ Hcp’s closest to the pin on the 16th was Gavin Weallean and the longest drive on the 8th went to Dave Wright. SOVEREIGN WHANGAMATA MENS MASTERS

This year’s annual tournament held recently saw a full field of 120 players from 37 clubs play 54 holes over 3 days. The weather was better than last year with only a few passing showers and blustery winds. The field was divided into 2 sections based on age which this year saw the split at 4057, and 58+. The oldest entrant was local Whangamata veteran Merv Michael at 80 years of age. Scoring was very close in the “young “ division after the first 2 days, with Richard Craven from Tauranga on 145 leading the charge from Dave Cooke

Day 3 saw calmer weather conditions and Anderson made the most of his opportunities to hit a one over 71 to finally come in with 217, 3 shots ahead of Craven and a further 2 shots back to Cooke. Regular entrant and past winner Glen Goldfinch was another shot behind in 4th place. In the “senior” division, Sonny Te Kanawa from Waitomo was leading after day 2 on 152, 4 shots ahead of Thames’s Greg Overend, with another 3 shots further back to Mike McCarten from Cambridge. On the final day Overend shot the best round of the day, a par 70, to finish on 226 and take out the honours by 4 shots from Te Kanawa with William Zimmerli from Akarana on 236. Whangamata local Bill Marshall won the Stableford prize in the senior division and regular overseas visitor to Whangamata, Yasu Suzuki from Japan took out the Nett overall winner in the senior division. A well-attended prize giving ceremony followed on Sunday afternoon. Sponsors and local businesses combined with the Whangamata Golf Club to build a prize list worth in excess of $15,000. BAY OF PLENTY GOLF TRAIL Te Puke host Maori Nationals The Te Puke golf club is hosting the 2014

NZ Maori Golf Nationals from Monday Jan 6 to Friday Jan 10. They are hosting the seniors (low handicappers), with previous winners including Michael Campbell, Phillip Tautarangi and their very own on site Golf Pro, Nicholas Davey (two time winner). All of these past winners have spent time on the Professional circuit overseas, so this event has and can be a great stepping stone to the next level and international success. With up to 175 players each day and family and supporters the club is expecting up to 400 people through the gates every day. The club is gearing up for this huge event, with a number of local businesses already lending a hand by providing tents and BBQs for the week. Tents have been generously supplied by Farmlands, TePuke Primary School, Harcourts and Wealleans, who have also provided a BBQ for the week. There is no charge for spectators, so come along and enjoy the atmosphere and view first hand some of the best golfers in the country. Te Puke Golf Club boasts 12 powered camping sites and 10 non powered, and so is expecting caravans and tents to add to the festive outlook for the week – if anyone wants to stay on site, it is $50 for the week, which includes full use of the bathrooms

facilities, simply contact the Manager to make a booking. When asked how the greens were running, Mike responded “they’re at about 9.5 on the stimp metre and putting true”. This augurs well for the week. Sandtrappers café and bar are the onsite caterers and have a full week of great food and service ready for the players and supporters alike. Breakfast (continental and fully cooked) is from 6:30am every morning with lunch melding into dinner from 12pm. Tuesday and Thursday is the Sandtrappers famous Roast Lamb, so if you haven’t experienced it before, make your way to the club on one of those two afternoons for a feast you won’t forget. The

bar is open all week to quench your thirst, with the friendly team of Sean and Shona Fitzpatrick providing some of the best service in the Bay. Either relax in the fantastic club rooms overlooking the 18th green and fairway, or enjoy your food and refreshments at the new picnic tables beside the 18th green. On the Sunday, our on-site Pro Nicholas Davey will be hosting a golf clinic, so if you feel like a quick retune of your swing be at the club around 3pm to make the most of Nicks extensive experience. Woman’s CHAMP of CHAMPS Wanganui lady golfers held their season’s pinnacle event, The Champion of Champions trophy, at Castlecliff golf club. Played in late November 2013, the sun shone on all the players, as the weather was beautiful throughout, but it shone particularly on the home club which won the Best Nett Team Event event for the first time since the trophy was first played for in 1993. Clubs from throughout the region, 14 in all, send their individual champions from Silver, Bronze1 and Bronze 2 as well as their Bronze 1 runner up, to compete in a gruelling 36 hole individual and team event. Scores from the team members are used to find the individual “Champion of Champions” in each grade and then collated to find the overall “Champion Club” for

Arrowtown Defend Title The 2013 Central Otago Inter-club competition came to a close with the 8th and final round being played at Dunstan GC late

November 2013. 2012 Champions Arrowtown won the round with their 5 counting nett scores totaling 350, an average of 70 per member. They were 21 shots better than second placed Alexandra on the day and comfortably secured the title as Inter-club Champions for 2013. Going into the final round, Arrowtown held a slender lead over Cromwell. The two clubs had been locked in a close tussle throughout the season and the stage was set for a tight final round. However, on the day, Cromwell capitulated and finished in last place for the final round with a team score of 387, comfortably their worst score in 2013 season. Cromwell’s monumental stumble left them trailing 50 shots behind Arrowtown and allowed Queenstown to slip through into second place. Wanaka finished just 5 shots behind Cromwell in 4th place. The season long competition was again very popular with the players in 2013 and Arrowtown are looking forward to stamping their mark on the 2014 series when the first round is played on their home turf next month.

Keith Yorston (Hawarden), Marie Michael, Kath Adams (Greendale) and John Allan (Hawarden) (pictured above) took out the teams title at the annual Presidents and Secretaries day held at Hawarden early December on a countback from Markham Lee, Jan Stupples (CGRA), Jan Rushton and Warren Houghton (Weedons) (pictured below). Jan Rushton won the Secretaries Trophy with 39 stableford points from Fran A nderson (A k a r o a) on 35 while John Allan won the Presidents Trophy on 41 points from Hamish Kay (Akaroa) on 38 points.

Russley were too strong for their opposition in the gross section of both the Under 19 and Under 23 Teams competition held at Russley Golf Club in early December 2013 The Under 19 team pictured from left of Adam Vining, Reid Hilton, Jacob Roberts and Connell Kilpatrick had the best gross total across the field of 436 with the Under 23’s on 439. The winning U23 team consisted of Owen Burgess, Michael McAuley, Regan Kilpatrick and Anthony Weatherhead. The Hororata Under 19 team blitzed the field in the Net competition with a best three score of 408, 18 shots better than their nearest rivals. The team consisted of Mark Wilson, Jayden Hann & Dominic Brett Kelly with Mark Weatherly absent. The Under 23 Net was won by Coringa Green comprising of Moon Hak Lee, Fiona Gebbie, Jarrod Satherley and Zhi Xing.

Presidents & Secretaries Day

The Bottle Lake team rose to the occasion on their home prior to Christmas to win the Woodward Cup Promotion/Relegation event against Pegasus and Lincoln. The Bottle Lake team of Bruce Johnston, Phil Davis, Kieran Sharvin, Steve Dallow, Jason Campbell and Tom Harding-Ilott, had a combined gross stableford score of 191. Lincoln came in on 155 and Pegasus on 149. 
