an you name the winner of the New Zealand Open? It was only held a month ago, it was live on pay television and covered by the mainstream news media. So who did win? I would suggest most will not be able to name him. I would also suggest many will not even have the foggiest idea. Some may remember that the Japanese guy was leading but he was beaten on the last hole. Some may remember that the guy that beat the Japanese guy was possibly from Australia, but they couldn’t be sure. Unfortunately this column is spoiled because we have a picture of the winner on the front cover but even that may not be enough for some to recall his name. So what’s the point I am try-
Danny, we need you ing to make? Put it this way. If it had been a New Zealander I wouldn’t even be asking the question. Most would know, even non-golfers. If it had been Ryan Fox, Michael Hendry, Josh Geary, Steve Alker, David Smail or Mark Brown then I am sure most of us would have been able remember. What I am trying to say is we need a winner we know. But that doesn’t mean buying a big name from overseas. I am dead against paying huge appearance money for, say, a world top 10 player. That’s just giving money away to someone who doesn’t need the money. There have been examples in the past where a tournament has bought a big name player, only for that player to miss the cut. What a waste.
We also have to keep in mind that it is only the New Zealand Open. We are never going to rival the US Masters, the British Open or the US Open. We have to understand our place in the market and that market is Asia-Pacific. But there is one obvious player we need. His name is Danny Lee. Even if he didn’t win, he would create great interest by simply making an appearance. Danny is our No1 player, he plays on the world’s biggest stage, the PGA Tour, and has won on the PGA Tour. New Zealand Open organisers have tried to court Danny but so far he has declined. We can’t afford to pay for Danny but maybe we could upgrade his airfare to two checked-in bags and an inflight meal. But no more. I un-
derstand Danny needs to concentrate on the PGA Tour but we need him to make an appearance in the country that funded much of his amateur career. Look at Lydia Ko. What an ambassador she has been for New Zealand and in a great show of loyalty she has kept coming back for the New Zealand Open. I know Ko’s situation is different to Lee’s. Ko is the world’s No 1 and can easily pick what tournaments she wants to play. She donated her winnings from this year’s New Zealand Open to charity. But oddly enough, despite Ko’s presence, there was no live television coverage of the women’s New Zealand Open. That doesn’t make sense to me. So who did win the New Zealand Open? Time for an answer. His name is Matthew Griffin. He is from Australia. He was the guy that beat the Japanese guy on the last hole.

BEST ON TEST The FW7 was rated the No.1 powered model on the market in the latest trolley test conducted by the UK’s top-selling golf magazine, Today’s Golfer. Based on an extensive testing process that put 11 of the most popular electric trolleys through their paces over a number of rounds, the judging process took into account weight, folded size, ease of storing, electronic features, aesthetics and accompanying batteries – and placed the FW7 ahead of all other brands. “The FW7 is a serious piece of kit – it has the bells and whistles that lots of modern golfers crave,” was the verdict of Simon Daddow, Equipment Editor of Today’s Golfer. “It is really well constructed and it performed superbly.”
Former NZ Open winner adds NZ PGA to his tally GOLF NEWS
A
blemish-free final round carried Brad Kennedy to victory in the New Zealand PGA Championship in Auckland. The Australian carded a five-under par 67 for his last 18 holes at the Remuera Golf Club to win by two shots from Josh Geary of New Zealand and another Australian, Nevan Basic. Kennedy, winner of 2011 New Zealand Open, had scores of 70, 65, 64 and 67 to finish at 22 under par. It was his first win for three years. “It feels fantastic,’’ Kennedy said. “I haven’t won since 2013, it’s been a great week and I am really glad I could do the double here in New Zealand.” Kennedy birdied his first hole on the final day and never looked back afterwards. “I was able to get off to a good start and I knew I had to do that today,’’ he said. “The back nine was playing pretty tricky with the breeze swirling. None of us played the back nine as good as we could have and fortunately Josh made a bogey on 17. “That gave me a little bit of leeway coming into the last. I managed to birdie the last so it’s a great feeling to win again.” Kennedy is a regular on the Japan Tour and will be heading back there this year. “It’s a great start for me this year, and I’ve got two months off before the Japan Tour starts. To win anywhere is just a great effort, there were some quality players here “s week so to come over and win in New Zealand, it’s like my backyard now. “Obviously all the locals were gunning for Josh, and making lots of noise, but I just kept doing my own thing. Being over in Japan and being on tour for a long time now, you try to use that as a bit of an advantage, it was a great tussle out there.” Geary’s hopes of victory were virtually dashed when he scored a bogey on the 17th hole. But he was not despondent afterwards considering he finished 20-under par with scores of 68, 65, 66 and 69. “To come out and shoot 20-under and to just lose is not really a bad week,” Geary said. “Brad played really solid, he didn’t give us an inch. I did what I could, I didn’t quite have my A-game but I was still able to shoot some good numbers.

“Missing as many fairways as I did this week I did really well, so I’m still proud of what I achieved here for how I played.” New Zealand’s second highest ranked player in the world, Ryan Fox, gave the locals plenty to cheer about when firing a seven-under on the last day to finish the tournament fourth on 19-under 269. A shot back fifth was another Kiwi, Michael Hendry, and James Nitties from Australia. Holden marketing general manager Marnie Samphier was pleased with the way the tournament went. “It has been a wonderful few days, with more people coming out, bigger crowds this year, high quality golfers and lots for people to do,’’ Samphier said. “The look and feel makes this more than just a golf tournament, it’s a great event for the whole family to enjoy.’’

Australian prevails in last-hole drama at NZ Open NEWS
M
atthew Griffin overcame the nerves on the last green to snatch victory in the New Zealand Open in Queenstown. The Australian was one shot behind the leader Hideto Tanihara of Japan going to the last hole of The Hills course but it ended up being a two-shot swing as Griffin made birdie and Tanihara made bogey. Tanihara’s tee shot at the 18th went into the rough while Griffin hit his approach shot to close range of the pin but admitted it was still a very missable putt. Said Griffin: “I hit a wedge to a nice, close range, long enough to still miss, so it was nice to roll it in. With Tanihara it was a bit unfortunate as his drive just rolled over and went into the rough. “It was the most nervous I’ve been. I did a lot of deep breathing on the green and it was a nice putt.” Griffin began the final day of the tournament, sponsored by BMW and ISPS Handa, two shots behind Tanihara and admitted he was nervous from the outset. But an eagle on the first hole soon calmed him. “You’re always nervous on the first tee,” he said. “I hit a couple of shots in close and it really settled the nerves.” Nearing the finish Griffin said he tried his hardest to close the gap on Tanihara but it didn’t happen despite some good shots. “I took on 16 and 17 as I knew I was behind and hit good spots but only came up with pars – but the last was a great way to finish.” The win was Griffin’s sixth as a professional and it earned him $180,000. But he was just pleased to perform in front of so many of his personal supporters. “My girlfriend Liz, family and friends are here, the celebrations are going to be pretty big,’’ he said. “It’s the first time that my parents have travelled overseas to see me play and it’s the biggest amount of people I’ve had at any event. There will be a drink out of that trophy before the night is over. “This is by far the biggest event I’ve won. To win the New Zealand Open, it’s got so many good names on the trophy, it’s a real step forward for me.” Griffin had rounds of 70, 65, 65 and 67 to finish at 20-under par for the tournament which also included one round at the nearby Millbrook course. Tanihara had rounds of 69, 66, 63 and 70 to finish at 19 under. He ended up in a bunker on the last hole but remained confident he would get down in two shots. “When it went in the bunker I thought it would be okay,’’ Tanihara said. “I wasn’t particularly worried and it wasn’t a shock. However, the last putt I had, I thought it was going to go and I just came up a bit too short which was a shame. “That’s the way that golf goes, there are many good players here. Out of 144 only one can win. I would like to try the same challenge again in the future.’’ Finishing tied for third, and six shots off the lead, were Michael Hendry of New Zealand and Japan’s Shunsuke Sonoda. Hendry gave the home fans something to cheer about by scoring a seven-under par in his final round. Fifth was Yoshinori Fujimoto of Japan on 13-under while Steven Alker of New Zealand was one shot back in sixth. Rounding out the top-10 on 11-under the card were Australians Deyen Lawson, Todd Sinnott, Matthew Giles and Rory Bourke. The tournament’s leading amateur, the winner of the Bledisloe Cup, was 17-year-old Daniel Hillier from Wel-

lington. He did not make the cut but finished at one over par after two rounds. The winners of the pro-am component of the tournament were Deyen Lawson and his amateur partner Anton Booy. Lawson picks up a bonus NZ$12,000 for his team’s effort.

anny Lee’s share of proceeds from last year’s Presidents’ Cup has gone to golf in New Zealand. All players, the captain and the captain’s assistant from each team in the Presidents’ Cup are allocated a portion of the funds generated from the tournament which is required to be given to a charitable cause. Last year’s tournament generated record proceeds of $6.1 million of which Lee had $90,000 to donate. That $90,000 will be split equally between New Zealand Golf, Bay of Plenty Golf and Lee’s home club of Springfield Golf Club in Rotorua. Each organisation has committed to use the funds to assist in Lee’s goal of progressing the development of the game. Lee said the donation was in recognition of the support he received in New Zealand.

“I am honoured to be able to further support and donate these funds to New Zealand Golf,’’ Lee said. “I started playing golf through them as a child and they greatly supported my golfing development. I hope we can help grow the game of golf in New Zealand and I look forward to being back in New Zealand one day soon.” New Zealand Golf chief executive Dean Murphy was thankful to Lee’s generosity. “We are incredibly humbled to receive this donation from Danny Lee,’’ Murphy said. “We are extremely proud of Danny and his achievements at the highest level on the world stage and we are so pleased that he remains so close and committed to New Zealand Golf. “Danny and his team are always so willing to give back to New Zea-
land and we look forward to a time in the near future when his schedule will allow him to return home to play.” To where it all began in the Bay of Plenty District Association, it’s executive director Chris McAlpine was also proud as punch having watched Lee since he was only 13 and has had the pleasure of getting to know him and watch his career grow. “This is a tremendous boost for golf in the Bay of Plenty which we will direct at junior development,” McAlpine said. “It’s been so special following his career from the time he was 12 years of age and barely spoke a word of English. His sense of humour was as much in evidence as his golfing ability from that age. “It means so much to us for Danny to have kept in touch and what a marvellous way to show his gratitude.”

Hendry’s record sixth win on Charles Tour GOLF NEWS
M
ichael Hendry became the most successful golfer on the Charles Tour when winning the Lawnmaster Classic in Palmerston North for the second year in a row. The win was Hendry’s sixth on the Charles Tour, which is New Zealand’s top circuit for professionals and top amateurs. Doug Holloway had previously set the record with five wins. Hendry said the six wins was a record to be proud of from a New Zealand perspective. “It’s immensely satisfying,” Hendry said. “I want to be regarded as one of New Zealand’s best when I hang up my boots.” His sixth title didn’t come easy with Josh Geary consistently nipping at his heals in a real dog fight on the final day. In a tournament reduced to three rounds because of rain on the scheduled first day saw Hendry post an amazing 11 under par in the opening round. But from those dizzy heights it was back to Earth with an even-par round on day two. Hendry was back in the grove in the opening nine holes of round three when he reeled off four birdies in the space of five holes. “I definitely struggled on the greens yesterday,” Hendry said of his second round. “So it was nice to make a solid birdie on five which gave me more confidence and then a little buffer as well.” Geary then came to the party with consecutive birdies on 13, 14 and 15 to be locked up with Hendry in the lead coming down the stretch which the hundred-plus Manawatu Golf Club faithful’s were relishing. Hendry then showed why he has the most Charles Tour victories next to his name with convincing birdies on 15, 17 and 18 to win in style. “When Josh applied some pressure on the back nine, it was a lot of fun,” Hendry said. “It was a bit of a ding dong battle out there and thankfully I made a few more birdies than he did.” Meanwhile, Chantelle Cassidy racked up her second Charles Tour victory in a row when holding off nearest rival Amelia Garvey in the women’s section of the event. Trailing by one shot overnight, Garvey struck early to put pressure on Cassidy, but the latter then put together a near perfect final showing to hold onto her lead. Said Cassidy: “It feels good to win another Charles Tour event. “I have played Lawnmaster a couple of times and come so close, but now I have got the win. I made crucial birdies and just tried to stay focused throughout the day.”

First Australian winner in New Zealand Women’s Seniors NEWS
I
t was another of those damned Aussies again. Australians constantly deny New Zealanders victory in numerous sporting events and this time it was Sharon Dawson from Perth who fended off the Kiwis. Dawson won the New Zealand Women’s Senior Matchplay Championship at Te Anau in Southland in February to become the first Australian to win the tournament in it’s 68-year history. Dawson, who was the Australian Women’s Senior champion, beat the big local hope Robyn Pullar from Invercargill in their semi-final match and then beat the tournament’s 2013 winner Robyn Pellow from Waikato in the final. The semi-finals and final were marred with relentless rain throughout the day but Dawson was also relentless. She beat Pullar in the semi-final on the 18th hole and then won 3 and 2 over Pellow in the final. Dawson had qualified in fourth place for the matchplay competition with a round of 79 on the par 74 course in the strokeplay section. She beat Bay of Plenty selector Carol Leary (Waihi) two up in her first round match and then marched to a 5 and 4 win over Aorangi-South Canterbury representative Jenny Kellahan in a quarter-final. This year’s field consisted of 96 players, aged between 50 and 89, with handicaps ranging from scratch to the New Zealand maximum of 40. The Australian contingent numbered eight, there was one English competitor and one from Canada, who also had membership with Wanaka Golf Club. The 2015 champion Jill Morgan (Te Awamutu) was unable to enter, and the tournament also missed out on the competition from Robyn Boniface (Queens Park), a three-time winner, due to other commitments. Despite the lack of these two strong senior players in the field, the first division, competing for the New Zealand Golf Challenge Cup, was one of the strongest the tournament had seen including a seven-time Australian Senior winner Sylvia Donohoe and 10 current or past New Zealand district representatives. The tournament is managed by PaR nz Golfing Holidays on behalf of New Zealand Golf, who introduced a new sponsor to the event, BSG Group who distribute the Bosch Range of home appliances. Napier Golf Club was announced as the venue for the 2017 New Zealand Women’s Senior Championship, from the February 21-24.

Encouraging greater participation by woman By Dean Murphy New Zealand Golf Chief Executive
A
s we golfers all know, golf is a sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. It is a sport we can enjoy from cradle to grave (almost) and in this fine country, we have the ability to play on all sorts of wonderful courses. All of these factors combine nicely to ensure golf is the highest formal participation sport in New Zealand with approximately 500,000 Kiwis participating in the game each year. While these participation numbers are fantastic, what concerns me is the fact that our membership database of over 100,000 golfers features just 30,000 females. When the population is reasonably evenly split between men and women, why on Earth do we have such a male skewed membership? The male skew is
even worse when including casual participants which again makes no sense. I can’t think of any reason why the membership profile of golfers in New Zealand shouldn’t be closer to 50-50. Perhaps, we as a sport, have been too focused on male participants and have ignored the huge opportunity to encourage more woman to play the game. In my view, we all need to do far better in this area. What do we have to lose? To do our part, we recently launched She Loves Golf - a campaign designed to encourage women to give golf a go. Developed as an on-going initiative, She Loves Golf was launched with a focused month of activity across November on and off the course. The campaign celebrates the fun, health and camaraderie of golf. Headed by five woman ambassadors to drive the content and visibility, supported by pop-up activations, golf offers and programmes; She Loves Golf has become
the brand for golf to showcase to females that golf is welcoming and fun; it’s a great game for life. By engaging key influential females as ambassadors, each with a large social media presence, New Zealand Golf has been able to reach a wide range of female audiences through a variety of communication channels that would be cost prohibitive otherwise. The ambassadors delivered the key messages that golf is a fun, social and a welcoming game that everyone can play with an authentic and trusted voice. New Zealand Golf has been able to communicate the key campaign messages to not only online audiences reaching more than one million social media accounts, but also traditional media including prime television, generating a paid media spend of $94,965 and 3.5 million eyeballs. This resulted in over 10,500 new visits to lovegolf.co.nz in November alone.
A total of 73 golf clubs around the country participated in the initial She Loves Golf campaign, with over 90 female specific events and programmes delivered. Over 90 percent of these clubs have indicated their ongoing support of the campaign and 78 percent have achieved success by getting new females involved in the club. Of the 2000-plus females exposed at club level, over 75 percent are reported to be continuing to engage with the club in some way. As a campaign, She Loves Golf has launched incredibly well with great results achieved over the focused month of November activity. With longer lead in times, existing awareness from clubs of She Loves Golf and case studies of what was successful, club engagement is expected to be greater in 2016. We hope this initiative and the efforts of clubs will help us grow the number of females participating in the game -– something that is long overdue.

Is your golf club growing the game? By Andrew Whiley A voice from the south
T
his past summer has been a good one for golf in New Zealand, with great weather offering plenty of opportunities to tee it up. In talking to some golf professionals around the country, they have been active with teaching, running children’s golf programmes and generally assisting golfers to have more fun playing the game. Then I recently saw an article on a news media website regarding the financially viability of golf clubs in Auckland. Some of the facts could be similar to golf clubs in other parts of the country. The key facts of the article were that most of Auckland’s golf courses were the traditional 18 holes. There was “a distinct lack of introductory golf facilities” in the face of a changing player profile, the document said. “Traditional patterns of play based on
membership of a local club are no longer the norm, and casual play through green fees is now a greater revenue stream for most clubs,” the document said. It added golf clubs were in “survival mode”, with the average club existing on 2-1/2 months’ worth of liquid reserves and one in five being technically insolvent. They were also under-investing in maintenance and depreciation. Meanwhile the population was growing, and it was estimated the number of Aucklanders playing golf each year could rise from the current 94,000 to 130,000 by 2030. As a NZPGA board member, I look at these issues, wanting to evaluate the health of the game, and determine what the key factors are that make some clubs vibrant and healthy and others left struggling. From my experience, it is about golf clubs that have taken a proactive approach and tackled the challenges head-
on versus trying to blame others for their problems. There is nothing easy about running golf clubs today except if you are running them like you were in 2010 then that is your first problem. The key question you want to ask is what should a golf club do in 2016 to be successful? Firstly, survey your members – do you know what they think? What are their key concerns? Do your members believe they are getting value for dollar for their subs? Are they happy with the direction of the club? Most golf clubs I see struggling have lost touched with their members. Secondly, does your club have a regular newsletter that goes out to your membership on a weekly or fortnightly basis that ensures everyone knows what is happening, what the club is doing and addressing club issues? And finally, point three, are you growing the game? In the last six months,

LADIES GOLFING RETREAT Noosa Springs — August
PERTH Golfing Holiday — September
SOUTH AFRICAN Golf Tour & All Blacks game — September/October

has your club invested in attracting new members through new golfer initiatives? Does your club have an active junior golf programme that shows that your golf club is family friendly? I have spent time looking at golf clubs that are successful and the main reasons I have noticed are: 1. They are engaging with their membership and welcoming new people on a consistent basis. 2. They are using the golf club facilities to attract alternative revenue sources like using the clubhouse for events and corporate meetings. 3. They have an active PGA professional involved with the club that is working to grow the game. Whether one is large or small, a successful golf club in 2016 will incorporate all of the above three elements. And most importantly, they will also have a governance team that invests and supports the team leading the golf club.

What path should NZ’s top golf tournaments take? By Duncan Simpson New Zealand PGA Chief Executive
W
ith New Zealand’s “summer of golf” now behind us, thoughts inevitably turn to how we can best develop our three premier tournaments (the New Zealand women’s and men’s opens and the PGA Championship) to help build the profile of golf in this country. It’s not an easy question to answer because each event has a completely different structure, with different challenges, opportunities and objectives. You could also argue that lifting the profile of golf is not the main objective, because the tournaments bring other benefits including showcasing the venue cities and the country as a whole. That is clearly an important element, but if the prime focus is not on improving golf’s profile, then would the significant amounts spent on these events in a very short space of time be better applied to developing other aspects of the game, such as club development and junior golf? Some of the challenges faced by our tournaments are obvious. Finding a clear
slot in the world golfing calendar is the first one. The Masters, US Open and British Open all have the great advantages of fixed dates each year - plus history and prestige as well - enabling travel plans to be made well in advance. By contrast, the men’s NZ Open has moved around from November to March, and the PGA Championship has come and gone over the years. The women’s NZ Open is possibly in the best space but still needs to confirm a venue for 2017. The women’s event has also had the huge benefit of Lydia Ko’s presence in recent years — and long may that continue. However, that has raised expectations for the other tournaments which can only be met by paying appearance fees, and the organisers have rightly steered away from this to date. There is also an assumption that live television coverage should be the norm, but only the men’s open has been able to find the budget to do this in recent years. Other challenges are not so obvious, but equally important. Media coverage is one. It is not a problem when Lydia or Danny Lee are doing well overseas, but getting
adequate reporting of our own events is another story. The recent Holden NZ PGA Championship featured on TV1 on pro-am day, thanks to a story around the winners of a “play with a pro” competition. That was the last TV coverage of the tournament. Local newspaper and radio coverage was adequate on the Thursday, but progressively faded away to nothing by the weekend, which perhaps reflects the paring back by mainstream news media of sports reporters, plus the advent of the Super Rugby season. The second challenge is the apathy of golfers themselves. If Joe Chopper normally plays on Saturday afternoon, you can guarantee he won’t give that up to watch a live golf tournament that day. He might come and watch on Sunday, assuming his domestic/family duties don’t interfere. That leads to the conclusion that if we want to build the profile of golf, we should probably be aiming more at occasional or non-golfers rather than the diehards. The NZ Open and PGA organisers have certainly recognised this, by including family orientated activities (music, kid’s
zones etc), but there is a long way to go. While the NZ Open was taking place, over the hill in Wanaka 40,000 people visited the A & P Show over the same weekend. You can’t tell me they were all there to look at prime stud stock, but to get that number to attend they had clearly created the right product and environment for a mainly family audience, and that over the years, they have succeeded in building an iconic event. Golf needs to think about how we get to that kind of model. We need to demonstrate that our golf tournaments are a great entertainment option for the family, and that golf courses are an important part of the community and an excellent use of urban green space. We need to showcase the uniqueness of golf as a game for life - the competitor age range at both men’s events spanned nearly 40 years from youngest to oldest. By playing to our strengths, and getting better support from the golfing community at large, we can build the profile of golf and ensure that our major tournaments continue to thrive and are an important contribution to this.

GOLFCOACHING

To live the dream, play golf while studying in the USA By Anthony Barkley NZPGA Professional
I
remember a very long time ago when in my 7th form year my golf game kind of took off. I won a few things around the place and an American basketball player in my home city at the time asked if I would like to look at applying for a scholarship in the States. So there was a choice to look to study in the USA or carry on playing in NZ and see where it can take me. I always question if I made the right decision as I stayed in NZ and although I went on to have a fun amateur career here in NZ where I met lots of great people the question still lingers in the back of my mind, what would it have been like over there. So its interesting 25 years on where now I have coached or met many kids who have signed up to agents to study in the USA. Usually an upfront fee of around the $7000.00 is paid. Just looking at one company and I could see 30+ kiwi hopefuls signed up wanting to live the dream. I will never knock anyone for trying as in some ways I regret not giving it a go myself but it scares me that a payment of $7000 with no guarantee of placement is paid by each family. With this in mind I decided there must be a better way and I did find one company (Athletes USA) that only charge once a player has signed with a university, so I am now a scout for these guys here in NZ for all sports, including golf. So there are some options available but if a young player is showing some promise should they stay in NZ or look to head to the land of the PGA Tour. I think either can work as in NZ if you are good enough to represent NZ you will get some fantastic opportunities to travel abroad to gain experience while holding the kiwi flag high. In America you will be put into a pressure cooker of performance. If you don’t trial well week to week, you won’t make the weekend comp. But you get the opportunity to play in America and make a name for yourself which could lead to a future playing golf or at least you will get a degree doing it. If you have not looked into criteria’s to study in the States here are a couple of truths: 1. Academically each student needs to have a good record.
The higher the better. 2. To get a full scholarship a male needs to be on a handicap of 3 or less. For a female athlete its ideal to be 6 handicap or less. 3. You obviously must want to travel and study. 4. If you commit to study in the states a few years out and have a handicap too high. You need to start a structured approach to game improvement. If you don’t have a professional, find one (I can help to mentor anyone).
I feel that at some stage in an athlete’s golf career a decision needs to be made in the direction they take. It’s important that young golfers have a backup plan if they don’t make it as players. Some may choose a job or others University in NZ. Others may look a little outside the square and look to study and play golf. The only real place to do this by way of scholarship is the States that is a very popular option for players around the world. If anyone wants help to try and live this
dream, contact me directly (ant@100percentgolf.com) or look at the Athletes USA website or facebook page. •••

Great golf on Australia’s Sunshine Coast G O L F T R AV E L
T
HINK of the Gold Coast without the glitz and glamour, without the impossibly tall buildings and theme parks. Picture just the natural beauty, endless golden beaches, arcades dotted with charming al fresco restaurants and people with a relaxed, friendly attitude to life. The image in your mind now pretty much sums up Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, a delightful 60km stretch of coastline and hinterland, stretching from world famous Noosa in the north to Caloundra, and all just an hour’s drive north of Brisbane. It’s always been a popular holiday spot for Kiwis looking for warm temperatures, cool drinks, good fishing and surfing and, perhaps, to catch up with family and friends included among the tens of thousands of New Zealanders who visited the region in the past – and never left. These days they’re also coming for the golf. The Sunshine Coast boasts four of the finest resort-style golf courses in the country, offering challenging, yet enjoyable, experiences for all golfers – from the elite to the weekend battler. Situated within walking distance of Noosa Heads, Noosa Springs is a one-
stop shop for a golfing holiday that will delight all the family – even those who don’t always understand the majesty of the game. For example, there’s a world class spa and health centre, a café, bars and a spectacular restaurant offering fine dining, as well as large, comfortable, self-contained two-bedroom apartments. But, for most, the major attraction is the beautiful 18-hole golf course that meanders through lush natural bushland offering glimpses of Lake Weyba, as well as kangaroos, koalas and swans. Designed by Graham Papworth, the par 72, 6180m course can be a challenge, but is always fun to play. There is a network of concrete cart paths which means the course is playable in all weather. One unique feature is that golfers are not required to fill in their divots. Greens staff do that each morning – ensuring that the fairways remain immaculate and the course in pristine condition. A 15-minute drive south is Peregian Springs, an 18-hole delight designed by Adam Scott’s dad Phil, which winds its way through some of Queensland’s
most impressive sub-tropical bushland. The championship course is flat and easy to walk, but spoil yourself and hire one of the club’s brand new fleet of Club Car carts, equipped with the latest GPS system which shuts your cart down should you venture into one of the sensitive environmental areas. When the round is finished, golfers can relax over a drink and a snack in the modern clubhouse, which spills out onto a terrace overlooking the 18th green and the spacious practice area. From there, it’s a 10-minute drive to Twin Waters, not yet 30 years old but still the longest established of the Sunshine Coast’s Big Four golf courses. This is where Adam Scott learnt to play the game and is among his, and Ian Baker-Finch’s, five most favourite courses in the world. The course, which also includes tennis courts and an iconic driving range where players hit into a large lake, was designed by Peter Thomson and Mike Wolveridge, and its stunning setting and challenging layout combine to produce a memorable round of golf. Finally, another 30-minute drive south will find you at Pelican Waters,
One of the bes value for m t oney membersh ips in Auckland
just inland from Caloundra’s cherished Golden Beach and on the doorstep of one of south-east Queensland’s most ambitious residential projects. This Greg Norman-designed gem is always rated highly among Australia’s best public access courses, but best to be right on your game to tame this challenging layout, particularly if the wind’s up. A stunning 18-hole championship course, Pelican Waters has a superb clubhouse, driving range and practice putting and chipping areas, as well as a well-stocked golf shop. Like the other Coast resort courses, Pelican Waters warmly welcomes visitors, and you’d be very unlucky to not be able to take advantage of a wide range of specials that make golfing on the Sunshine Coast not only enjoyable and memorable, but cost-effective, too. Spaces still available for popular festival By Derek Drysdale, Tournament Director
GOLF EVENT
W
e are delighted to announce that TSB Bank has joined us as a Major Sponsor for our next tournament in May, 2016. TSB Bank Nelson Festival Of Golf has received sponsorship funding for this year’s event from the Nelson Events Marketing & Development Programme, which is funded by Nelson City Council. The Programme’s objective is to stimulate Nelson City’s economy in the shoulder and off seasons by bringing new spending through visitors coming to Nelson for district events.” For further information contact NEMDP Chair, Bill Findlater on 03 545 6858. One of the ‘must play’ events in the New Zealand golfing calendar, the TSB Bank Nelson Festival of Golf has it all - one round of teamplay in teams of four, followed by three rounds of individual stableford competition in separate divisions. There will be one women’s division and two men’s divisions. On offer will be daily stableford prizes per division, as well as an overall daily gross prize per division. With a varied array of prizes on offer, we’re delighted to again be offering all competitors the chance to win a car for getting a hole in one, on the allotted holes during the tournament. Our long putt competition will again bring lots of fun to the week, and with a major prize at the end of it, it’s worth getting on that practice green early. Winners will be decided on each player’s accumulated total from the three individual rounds played. As in
previous years we are again putting up some great novelty prizes and lucky draws to keep everyone in the hunt for a reward. After suffering a couple of windy days during our previous events in late October, we have moved the tournament to a new date on the calendar in the hope of providing entrants the beautiful weather that our region is famed for. Hopefully the new dates in early May will offer playing conditions that will provide competitors with chances to shoot great scores in calmer conditions – Making entry to the TSB Bank Nelson Festival of Golf a great competition for players of all abilities to enter. The format has also changed slightly for this next tournament with the weeks itinerary as follows:
SUNDAY 1ST MAY:
Registration at Nelson Golf Club between 1pm and 3pm. Tournament Director, Derek Drysdale, confirmed that from 3pm onwards on Sunday 1st May, Nelson Golf Club will offer all competitors courtesy of the course to go out and play some golf to get a feel for the conditions. The tournament committee would like to thank the Nelson Golf Club for this generous gesture, as I am sure all the visitors to the area would like to take up that offer.
MONDAY 2ND MAY:
Shotgun start – to be played over the wonderful Nelson Golf Links. This is our only Team Day for the tournament, with everyone playing in teams of four, with plenty of team prizes up for grabs. No individual scores will count
towards the individual weekly total and the team section will only apply on the Monday. For anyone entering individually or in couples, you will be matched up into teams for the day. Just let us know when you complete your entry form and we’ll arrange it for you. After play on Monday there will be the Long Putt Qualifying Round, so make sure you have a shot at this fun event as it proved very popular last time round. Qualifiers will go into a shoot-out on Friday with the chance of winning a major prize. The Team Day prize giving will take place in the clubhouse at close of play.
TUESDAY 3RD MAY:
Shotgun start at Motueka Golf Club. This is the first of three daily rounds, in handicap divisions, which count toward the accumulative individual score for the week. Daily prize giving will take place in the clubhouse after play to reward the best players of the day. New Zealand golf legend, Sir Bob Charles recently played at Motueka and described it as one of New Zealand’s hidden gems. He was not wrong and you will love this beautiful tree lined parkland course.
WEDNESDAY 4TH MAY:
A rest day! If, in fact, you need a rest…. we are aware that some of you just can’t get enough golf, so we’re looking at a new extra option for you for the Wednesday, so keep an eye on our website for further news! Alternatively you can enjoy some of the many other fabulous things to do in the Nelson / Tasman Region, there’s plenty to choose from.
>> Entering the TSB BANK NELSON FESTIVAL OF GOLF is very easy, just visit our website at, www.nelsongolf.co.nz/festivalofgolf Entry forms are available online, as well as other useful information regarding accommodation etc. If you would rather speak to someone in person, please call Allison O’Donnell on 03-548-5029 then option 3, and Allison will be happy to deal with your enquiry. We look forward to seeing you in May 2016 for a wonderful week of golf and friendship.
THURSDAY 5TH MAY:
Shotgun start. Played at Greenacres Golf Club, the second round in the individual competition, in handicap divisions could be called “moving day”, so keep those scores low! The daily prize giving will again take place in the clubhouse after the day’s play. Greenacres golf course has outstanding views no matter where you look. The course is a great test of golf which will make you think about that next shot on every hole. As their website says, “it is the Best Island Golf Course”.
FRIDAY 6TH MAY:
Shotgun start for this final round is again at the Nelson Golf Links. Played on wonderfully true greens it will offer everyone the chance to putt their way to glory. Today will determine the winners of each division. The qualifiers for the putting shootout will take part in the final Putt-Off in front of the assembled competitors.... no pressure, eh? The Major Prize Giving will take place in the Nelson Clubhouse in the evening hosted by The 19th Cafe & Bar. Nelson Golf Links: A wonderful golf course which has recently hosted both the NZ Amateur Championships and the NZ Senior Championships. Being chosen to host these great tournaments is indeed a great accolade from New Zealand Golf. I am sure that Superintendent Brendan O’Hara and his team will have the course at its best for all the competitors involved. I would like to thank our sponsors at this time, as without them we couldn’t put things together at this level of competition.
A word from our sponsors: TSB BANK:
“We’ve been New Zealand owned and independent for over 160 years. During that time we’ve grown and evolved, as we have, so has our ability to give back. Sponsoring this event is just one more way we can say ‘thanks’ for your role in our journey, and for making Nelson an even better place to live.” BRENT WILLIAMS, MANAGER
COBRA PUMA
“Cobra Puma are delighted to become involved with the ever popular TSB Bank Nelson Festival of Golf for 2016. Our range is exciting for all golfers, just like this tournament is, so we saw it as a perfect match.”
TOTAL GOLF:
Glyn Delany and his team at Total Golf are proud to be involved with the TSB Bank Nelson Festival of Golf. “We thoroughly enjoyed meeting all the competitors at the previous events and we will be more than happy to provide them with our professional services during the next tournament.” GLYN DELANY, TOTAL GOLF
MIKE PERRO REAL ESTATE:
“I wish every success to everyone involved in this tournament, and if you’re visiting the area and decide you want to move here, I’ll be happy to be of service. Of course, for all the local golfers, I would be delighted to assist them in selling their property.” SHELLEY CARPPE, MIKE PERRO REAL ESTATE

manicured greens, and towering eucalyptus trees are strikingly beautiful and blend harmoniously with the surrounding residential development. A natural water-course featuring lakes, ponds, creeks and native wildlife completes a rare golf course environment. The front nine holes are particularly striking as the trees envelope you as you move around, and the final two holes are a great way to finish the round. Consistently ranked in the top resort courses in the country, the service before and after you play is superb, and we feel certain you will enjoy your day.

The championship resort layout meanders its way through 39 hectares of towering eucalyptus, picturesque lakes and serene waterways. Flowering native and exotic trees and plants abound, while ornate bridges cross watercourses in which luxuriant lilies jostle for space The distinguishing feature of the course is the clubhouse, with its Colonial Queenslander design. You feel like you have drifted back in time as you sit down to that first thirst quenching drink on the wide, breeze-catching Queenslander verandahs which surround the building and offer panoramic views over the golf course and Gold Coast hinterland. Palmer Colonial is well worth the visit, and great value for money. >>

Who would have thought she would accomplish this at 18 years of age. On the night, Lydia gave a small speech and then mixed with all and sundry. Lydia was extremely charming and spent considerable time with fellow Life Members (all 70+) and of course the junior members of the club. Lydia posed for photos, selfies and autographed everything that was put in front of her. Pupuke Golf Club is extremely proud of this young lady and so happy she accepted Life Membership. Would there be another golf club in the world with an 18 year old Life member? I wouldn’t think so.
Nick Faldo series Under 18 qualifier at Clearwater earlier in the year which earnt him an invitation to the Asia series final at the world famous Mission Hills golf facility in China on the Faldo course. He finished 24th overall with rounds of 78, 74 and 74. Jake described the trip as an “awesome experience” with the style of play in China being very different to that in NZ. Jake got to test his game against the top junior players from Asia as well as meet Sir Nick Faldo who held a couple of clinics for the players on how to play many different golf shots. Jake attended the event with three other Kiwis (all from Canterbury) and sees the experience as a truly important step in the progression of his golf. Well done Jake, what an experience!

Despite assurances from our hosts at Pukekohe Golf Club that they could guarantee a sunny day for the annual Life Education Counties Manukau Golf Day, it poured. Ignoring the poor weather, keen golfers arrived ready for a fun day to help raise money for a great cause. After a delicious breakfast of bacon and egg butties, donated by Pokeno Bacon and Craddock Farms, bubbly and coffee the golfers headed out into the drizzle for a 9am shotgun start. By 11.30am, the rain was pelting down and about 10 teams called it quits and returned to the clubhouse for showers, coffee and refreshments. The brave [or foolhardy] teams persevered through the very wet conditions and after a very long 18 holes made it back to the clubhouse for a late lunch, prize giving and auction. 46 Under 16 junior players spread over five different squads recently commenced group coaching sessions for 2016. These entry level groups have always provided a strong base for junior golfers to develop their golf and rise up through the ranks to district representative selection. In addition to the six 2 hour sessions for each squad the association will also support them into some major junior tournament this year. For the more developed golfers Harbour Golf is currently finalising details concerning a high performance squad run in conjunction with NZ Golf and utilising their many resources. More details of this program are to be released very shortly. Finally in regards school golf some exciting plans are currently underway for the association to really increase its impact into school golf and ensure school children in the district are being exposed the game at all ages. The diminishing numbers of juniors nationwide is very concerning for the future of our game and this recent trend must be reversed. Again more details will be released once the detail around this program is finalised.

Over the two days of competition Siyi played with the men at New Plymouth (Ngamotu) and Stratford Golf Courses. After a nervous start at New Plymouth Siyi acquitted herself well at Stratford.
Pictured is Siyi accepting her trophy from the Eagles National President, Peter Skou. The winning team, Sharp Decorating Solutions (pictured above) were presented with a cup and medals donated by Abercrombie Engraving of Pukekohe. They also received a fire-pit and gift card each, donated by the local Mitre 10 Mega. All teams that participated in the fundraiser received prizes, all of which had been donated by businesses across the Counties Manukau area. The real winners on the day were Life Education who raised over $27,000, to help them bring their messages to the 35,000 local students they will be teaching this year.

by BOPGA as a result of a recommendation from NZ Golf for Districts to move into the professional era to ensure that skilled and motivated officers ran the Districts in an effective manner. The long term development of golf at a District level and to ensure there was continuity of expertise available to the District to enable this target to be met. This “part time” role was filled enthusiastically and competently by Chris, and the efforts that he put in to this role were appreciated by all those who had to deal with the problems associated with running the District. Chris ran the District as a sole part time employee, and there was definitely no limit to the hours he spent getting his tasks complete. His work ethic during this period was outstanding Chris maintained this part time role as Executive Officer until the merger of Bay of Plenty Golf Association and Bay of Plenty Thames Valley Women’s Golf Association in 2008 to form Bay of Plenty Golf Incorporated. When the first Board of Management was elected Chris was appointed Chief Executive Officer on a full time basis. This position he still holds today. The results’ of the efforts Chris has put into BOPGolf over the years has resulted in a well run and successful District. We now have a part time Officer for Woman’s Golf, and the appointment of a full time Coach / Development Manager has been very successful. The efforts to obtain funding to ensure this ongoing commitment have been one of Chris’ success stories. BOPGolf now has one of the largest Pennants programmes in the country, and the success achieved at Interprovincial level are in no small ways attributed to the organisational skills and dedication Chris brings to the role.

field of 64 pairs was extended to 68 to satisfy the need. The extremely popular format of one day of 4BBB, then Ambrose followed by Foursomes on the last day. Played in almost perfect conditions on this beautiful course overlooking the Tauranga harbour and in the shadow of the Kaimai Range. The first day leaders, for the men, were John Turner and Barry little with a marvellous 15 under on the card, it looked as if they would be impossible to catch. They were followed by James Alexander and Mark Weston on minus 11. The final day of Foursomes is a great leveller and Hap Sutherland and Hugh Moleta charged through the field to finish as the winners on minus 22.5 narrowly beating Ken Bloor and Don Campbell on minus 21.2. Not to say, for the ladies, that it was a one horse race, but Maree Southall and Marie Stark led from start to finish. On the first day they carded minus 11, four ahead of the field and completing the event on minus 15.3 ahead of Jean Dillon and Reina Mellor.

Muir believes some of the hardships golfers have to endure but that won’t deter him. “I’m prepared to do most things to get to where I’m meant to be because sometimes you have to work hard and make sacrifices.” With several New Zealand Order of Merit Tour titles, he didn’t let the strengthening north-easterlies fluster him. Patience was a key factor, said Muir, who saw the tourney here so early in the season as a yardstick for measuring his confidence into the latter stages of the tour. “It’s another opportunity for me to put my systems in place and assess them against other golfers and see where we can go from there.” He was satisfied that he was playing the game between the ears a lot better than previous seasons. “I had a couple of opportunities last year that I didn’t finish off so I’ll get back and have a chat with my coach to make sure I’m heading in the right direction,” said the former Bay of Plenty amateur who last year finished fourth on the NZ Order of Merit. A member of the Australasian Tour, Muir has only a “conditional card” this year, which means he won’t have as many starts as last year across the Tasman. He also can ply his trade in the South Pacific. He thanked, on behalf of other PGA members, the Hastings club and sponsors for a fantastic opportunity to develop their game at home.
MANAWATU WANGANUI
JUNIORS AT ORLANDO COUNTRY
In early March juniors from the district took part in a fun twilight competition at Orlando Country located on Rangitikei Line. The course is ideal for juniors of all levels. The weather did not play its part in the event. Strong winds greeted the participants and then some light rain fell while they were out on the course.. There was still some very good scoring despite the tricky conditions. Steven Bamford from Manawatu had the best gross score with a 2 over par 32, and Nakul Lakhani had the best net score of 25 off a 16 handicap for the 9 hole course.

PUSHY GOLF PARENTS DETERMINED TO RAISE THE NEXT LYDIA KO CAUSING CHILDREN HARM By Shaun Eade/stuff.co.nz
Pushy parents driven by the prospect of developing the next Lydia Ko could be damaging their children’s chances to succeed in sport when they are older.
The success of Ko at a young age is believed to be a factor in the increase in overzealous and pushy parents in children’s golf. New Zealand Olympic team sports psychologist Gary Hermansson warned that parents putting too much pressure on their children could lead to “serious problems” for athletes when they get older. “It creates the potential for some serious trouble down the line because the kids are going to end up doing it for the wrong reason. “They get trained into a psychological space which is not good for them in performance anyway. They get driven by a focus on the result rather than a focus on the effort they have to put in.” Manawatu-Wanganui Golf development manager Rhys Watkins said their recent age-grade championships featured a couple of incidents of pushy parents including some getting into shouting matches. “Most of the parents are very good, but it is something that is creeping in a little bit,” he said. The problematic parents were not restricted to the competitive grades and involved children as young as 7 in nine-hole participation events. “We are talking about kids who are just starting,” he said. “We just want them out there having fun.” At more competitive levels, Watkins said there has been an uptake in parents questioning the scoring of other children on the course. While the success of New Zealand golfers on the international stage has been important to the sport, Watkins also believed it was a factor behind the parents’ actions. “You see your Lydia Kos and your Tiger Woods of the world and how young they were when they were winning world events,” he said. “The importance of kids being really good at a much younger age in parents’ eyes is there.” Steve Munn, father of former New Zealand amateur No 1 and now professional golfer Josh Munn, said he came across plenty of pushy parents during his son’s development in the sport. “If you look back, the ones who were pushed too hard stopped playing when they were older.” He said his son’s success was because he enjoyed the sport and chose to play
in his free-time rather than being forced. Hermansson said it was important to put the emphasis on the effort and enjoyment the child has in a sport. But there was a fine line parents have to walk when it comes to encouraging their children to reach an elite level. “Caring, but also taking the opportunity to help kids learn to be disciplined is important,” he said. “To do that too early and/or to put that pressure on them for the needs of the parents is where it begins to be an issue and it gets to a point where... it becomes quite a distressing upbringing and it is not a healthy thing to do.”

There’s more than half a century between them, but that didn’t stop Wellington’s top amateur golfer Daniel Hillier and the province’s rep selector John Morgan teeing off in the same field in Queenstown last month. Morgan was on the bag for Hillier over six rounds at last year’s interprovincial tournament and jumped at the opportunity to play at the Open “Here we are over 50 years apart and it shows how golf is such an amazing game. There aren’t many sports like that,” said Morgan. “I went down to watch last year with some mates and thought it would be so much fun to play. It’s expensive but the Open has struggled for years and that’s how they make the tournament profitable. It gives an old fella like me a chance to live the dream.” “Well done to NZ Golf and John Hart and his Team on reformatting this event. It was fun to walk inside the ropes on 2 of NZ best golf courses with my mate and caddy Stu Scott and playing with my Australian based Golf Pro Taylor MacDonald who made the cut by 1 shot” Said John. Morgan believes Hillier has all the attributes for a golfer who’ll progress far. His name is already up in lights: at 16 he became the youngest winner of the NZ amateur, beating 2007 winner Danny Lee by five days. He added the national under-19 strokeplay crown at Shandon in September, joining Michael Campbell, Adam Scott and Jason Day as names etched on the trophy. “It’s pretty cool to have been able to play in the same Open. It’s pretty rare that would happen, 50 years between us,” Hillier said. It’s another big year for Hillier who defends his national amateur title and pushes for his big goal, selection in the New Zealand team for the Eisenhower Trophy in Cancun, Mexico, in September. Another of John Morgan’s Shandon mates Mark Brown performed credibility at the Open tied for 16th at 8 under.’ Good to see Mark play well and after a slow start finished very strongly,.he is one of Shandon’s favourite sons and is Patron of our Junior Academy”.
VOLUNTEERS AT CARTERTON
Where would we be without our volunteers. Carterton Golf Club has been cutting down trees along the number five fairway, In addition trees planted by members some years ago in a another part of the Club grounds have also been harvested. Whilst some were good enough to go to the mill for milling a lot more was destined to be firewood. In addition to our volunteers helping with ‘dropping’ the tree, they also had to be sawn, split and delivered. To date their efforts have raised more than $17,000 to swell the Clubs coffers.
squads to compete in the Australian Junior Amateur Championships to be held in Tasmania this April. The Junior Boys side includes Daniel Hillier (Wellington), Henry Spring (BOP), Harry Hillier (BOP) and Inia Logan (Otago). For the girls Alanna Campbell (BOP), Momoka Kobori (Canterbury), Amelia Garvey (Canterbury) and Ela Grimwood (North Harbour) have all earned their positions within the traveling New Zealand squad. The Australian Boys’ Amateur Championship will be staged at the Ulverstone Golf Club, Tasmania from April 13 – 15 and the Girls Championship will be held on the same dates at the Devonport Golf Club, Tasmania. Both championships are open to players aged under 18 years on the first day of play. The tournaments are contested over 72-holes stroke play (cut after 36-holes), with a handicap limit of approximately 4.4 for the boys and 15.4 for the girls. Within the Australian Girls and Boys Amateur, for the first time, the players will be competing for the Trans Tasman Cup – the boys will be competing for the Clare Higson Trophy and the girls the Junior Tasman Cup. The best three scores out of the four players each day will count towards the team total. The lowest team total will win the respective trophy. The biennial event was last played in 2012 in Victoria, where teams went head to head in match play. In 2012 Australia defeated the New Zealand Girls and Boys side.

CANTERBURY BURNSIDE HIGH SCHOOL DEFEND TITLE AT CANTERBURY SECONDARY SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIP
Three of the Burnside High School team from 2015 repeated the winning performance again in 2016. The team of Amelia
Garvey, Juliana Hung and brothers Hiroki Miya and Hayato Miya dominated the event with a strong performance at the Canterbury Secondary Schools Championship played at the McLeans Island Golf Club today. Hayato Miya was the new comer to the team at just 12 years of age (turning 13 tomorrow) playing off a six handicap. Amelia Garvey and Juliana Hung both played solid golf shooting 74 along with Hiroki Miya who had the third counting score of 76 to secure the win where the best three scores count. The girls also receive a stroke allowance for competing against the boys but the team would have still won without it. Amelia Garvey won the individual trophy for the best gross shooting 74 off the stick (70 with course rating allowance), she won on a countback from teammate Juliana Hung. Fittingly she won the trophy donated by Tom Whitaker who has played a great role in assisting with Amelia’s development through the Kaiapoi Golf Club Junior Programme. Burnside High School will now progress through to the national Secondary Schools Championship being played at the Nelson Golf Club 29 August. Congratulations to Lara Giddy (Papanui High School) who had her first hole in one on the 11th hole at McLeans Island.
FALDO SERIES ASIA FINALS
The Faldo Series Asia (FSA) Championship celebrated it’s 10th anniversary when national championship winners from 20 countries arrived at Mission Hills, China on March 4th to contest the 54 hole finals in 5 age grades. The finals were the second time New Zealand players have competed after the national title tournament at Clearwater Golf Club in January 2016. Juliana Hung (girls U16), Tom Parker (boys U16), Jake Wilmore Meenhorst (boys U19) and Matthew McLean (boys U21) were able to make the trip thanks to the generous support of the Canterbury Golf Development Trust. The major reward for success in any of the age grades at the Asia final is the opportunity to travel to Europe and contest the European Finals (now in their 20th year) in October 2016. The bonus for all finalists is the opportunity to meet, and be guided in two skills clinics by 6 time major champion, Sir Nick Faldo.
VISITING WELLINGTON?
What an amazing opportunity. Sir Nick Faldo, winner of three Masters titles, three Open Championships and a further 30 international professional tour victories, combined with 97 weeks at world number 1 as your host and mentor for a week of championship golf. The tournament follows a 54 hole stroke play format and all players are paired with a local Mission Hills caddy who knows the Faldo Stadium course layout and the many risks this course presents. Two practice rounds were available to the New Zealand players and these were used to work out the best strategies for mastering the approach to the pins in order to avoid three or four putts. Interestingly Sir Nick made mention in his short game clinic of the small landing areas at Augusta where a foot left or right often resulted in a putt that was far longer an ever imagined as slope and grain worked the ball away from the hole. Clearly some of the same thinking was used in the design of the Faldo Stadium course at Mission Hills. The greens are quite large and the measured speed was an average of 9.2, which is slow by many standards but putting downhill at anything greater may have required a chip shot back for all but the most delicate player. This was a skill that would ultimately determine the tournament winner. Round one was a little bit intimidating. Playing with other national champions there is a sense of measuring up. Tom Parker played with eventual tournament winner India’s Arjun Prasad for the first two rounds. Between them they were 7 over par through the first 9 holes on day one and Tom was the one who was 3 over. Arjun played the next 45 holes 14 under par to record his winning 10 under par score, with a string of 5 consecutive birdies during the second part of his first round. In the second and third rounds the players all experienced some bad luck with lost or embedded balls but everyone also had positives. Matt McLean for example was the only player to eagle the tough par 5 18th hole on two occasions. Jake Meenhorst was third on the table of most pars for the tournament (37 of 54 holes) and second on the table of most consecutive pars with 9 in a row during round 2.

The three days of competition, coupled with two Faldo clinics gave all the players an insight into the international challenge that aspiring young professionals must overcome. Different grass types, weather and approaches to play were all part of the valuable learning exercise. For the record Tom Parker finished the best placed New Zealand player, 6th overall, and third in the U16 boys division. Matt McLean finished 6th in the U21 boys, Jake Meenhorst 8th in boys U18 and Juliana Hung was 10th in the girls U16 grade. The third Faldo Series Asia New Zealand Championship, again supported by The Canterbury Golf Development Trust will be held in late 2016, or early 2017 at Clearwater Golf Club. The winners will then travel to Vietnam to contest the Asia finals to be held for the first time at the Laguna Lang Co Golf Club about one hour from Danang.

OTAGO SOUTHLAND MAYFIELD WIN SILVER PENNANT
The fifth round and Final of the Aorangi Silver Pennant was held at the Temuka Golf Course on Monday 14th March. The course was in great condition even though weather has been dry and the weather was perfect for some great golf. Mayfield were convincing winners of the North Zone. The South Zone was very close with Waimate, Tokarahi and St Andrews/Timaru all in contention to make the final with the last round to be played in the morning. St Andrews could only manage a draw against Pleasant Point so this enabled Tokarahi who defeated Waimate by 7 points to 3 to progress to the final by one point. In the afternoon Mayfield and Tokarahi played a very competitive match with both teams being equal after 11 holes and still locked together after 18 holes. Players 1 and 2 had to play on and the Mayfield team from left, Lal Mulligan, Jan Clucas, Judy Webb and Glenys Carr managed to win and half the first playoff hole which game gave them the win. Results of the Final, Glenys Carr (Mayfield) lost to Sandra Gibson 5/3, Judy Webb (Mayfield) beat Carolyn Rowland 2/1, Jan Clucas (Mayfield) beat Margaret Hore 1 up and Lal Mulligan (Mayfield) lost to Val Clarke 2/1. Glenys Carr won the playoff hole.
WAKATIPU HIGH WIN 2016 INTERCOLLEGIATE
The Wakatipu High School golf team featured the best in difficult, windy conditions to head Otago Boys’ High School by three strokes and win the Otago intercollegiate title at Chisholm Links on Friday 18th of March.
34
The four-strong team now qualifies for the national intercollegiate final, which will be held in Hawkes Bay in August. Callum Judkins led the way with a tidy 4-over-par 75 while Danielle Bailey chipped in with a 78 which was cut to 77 in view of the difference between the male and female pars. Jack Turner had a difficult day in the wind but held his card together well enough to put his team in the lead. For Otago Boys’ High School, Joseph Hancock starred, also shooting 75, while No1 Jacob Bellamy came in with 79. Hancock played the shot of the day, holing in one on the 131m par 3 10th, hitting a knock-down driver into a strong head wind. It is the second ace for the 13-year-old who holed in one on the par 3 eighth in the junior interprovincial at Cambridge last October. Bailey has recently switched her allegiance from Southland to Otago and showed with yesterday’s score she will be an asset for an improving young women’s team. Bailey has qualified for the national Eagles final in October in which players have to be under 17 on October 3. She should be joined by Judkins and Hancock who emerged as the two top boys in yesterday’s qualifying event.

The very popular Central Otago Inter-club competition has commenced for 2016, with the first two rounds being completed in quick succession. Wanaka, winners in 2014 and 2015 have made a steady start again this year to hold second position after rounds at Arrowtown and Alexandra. Their total of 732 leaves them just a single shot behind early leaders, Dunstan. There are 8 teams in the 2016 competition with a round to be played on each of the entrants home courses. Teams of 6 players compete in strokeplay competition with the best 5 nett scores counting for the team total. The competition format means that big swings in scoring can occur in a single day, so the 20 strokes that separate the field, at this early stage, are no indicator of where the final placings may fall.

ICHARD ELLIS from Pacific Golf Management has over 25 years’ experience running golf tours, international amateur and professional tournaments around the world. One of their annual events is” Hawaii International Golf week” played on the Big Island of Hawaii, August. 20th to 27th
Ellis says Hawaii is without doubt the golf resort capital of the world. “Hawaii Island”, known as the big island, is a 30 minute flight from Honolulu and has many of the best courses in Hawaii, designed by some of the greatest names in golf. There are seven world class courses within 15 minutes’ drive

from the fantastic Hapuna Beach Hotel at Mauna Kea Resort. Competitors in this event will get to play five rounds on the best of these great course plus there’s a day where they can sharpen their skills at the golf school run by PGA professionals (all included in the cost). The 4 round tournament is played on a different course each day. You don’t have to be a great golfer to join in as there are different handicap divisions for women and men, a scratch section for the guns - great prizes, nightly drinks, cocktail party and fun gala tournament dinner to finish. Accommodation during this event is at the Mauna Kea Resorts five star Hapuna Beach Hotel which is set on one of the best beaches in the world and everyone will enjoy the ocean view from their rooms. We always have a number of non-golfing partners on this trip and as you would imagine Hawaii has numerous activates on offer apart from golf. For those who wish to spend more time in golfing paradise and some well-deserved R& R after the tournament we will take a short flight to the island of Maui, spend 4 nights at the beautiful Westin Resort & Spa on Kaanapali Beach, great shopping fantastic beachfront bars & restaurants and a round of golf at the Plantation course at Kapalua, home of the USPGA Tours tournament of champions. To finish the trip it’s a short flight back to Honolulu and the final night of the tour is at the famous Waikiki. Ellis says this is his favourite tour and tourna-
