here are you from? That’s a question that is often asked as we meet new people as we play golf tournaments. It’s a question that is usually asked as polite conversation but can just as often provide very interesting answers. I played a tournament, essentially a social event, on the Gold Coast in Queensland last April when that question was regularly asked as the players were from around Australia and more than a dozen of us from Wellington. I had one interesting answer from an Aussie when I said I was from Wellington. The Aussie said is Wellington in the top island or the bottom island? Firstly this was question that I couldn’t care to answer. What did it matter if Wellington was in the top or bottom island, was my first reaction. I relented and replied it was at the bottom of the top island. I thought that was a good reply because the Aussie would probably be confused with the use of the words top and bottom in the same sentence.
The people you meet at golf tournaments The Aussie was indeed confused because he then asked is that the island with Auckland in it. This was even more infuriating for me as it made me think that the Aussie thinks New Zealand revolves around Auckland. Grrrrrrr, I said under my breath. The Aussie was from Newcastle. I felt like asking is Newcastle on Australia’s big island or little island. I refrained from doing so, but only just. But what I did say greatly impressed myself and it’s better to impress yourself than anybody else. From my horse racing background I knew what a person from Newcastle is called. There are a lot of good horses and horse people from Newcastle and therefore became familiar with the name given to the inhabitant of Newcastle. I said to the Newcastle golfer: “Ah, so you are a Novocastrian.’’ The Novocastrian golfer was indeed impressed. He said: “Most people guess Newcastleton or Newcastleite.” I raised this conversation with my Wellington golf friends at a Malaysian
restaurant in Surfers’ Paradise that night and we took the subject further. Sydney, Melbourne, Manchester, Glasgow, Los Angeles — what do you call people from those cities. The answers are at the end of the column with Los Angeles perhaps the most intriguing. At the same golf tournament a year earlier an Australian asked me where I was from. I kept it simple and replied New Zealand. The Aussie said whereabouts in New Zealand? I didn’t feel like replying because I thought he would only say where’s that but I said Wellington. The Aussie said whereabouts in Wellington? I thought this is becoming stupid. Nobody from outside New Zealand asks whereabouts in Wellington. I replied Lower Hutt, thinking that would surely bring an end to the questions. But it wasn’t. The Aussie asked whereabouts in Lower Hutt. I said you have to be joking? I said I live in Kelson. To my amazement he said: “Ah yes,
I know, Kelson. I used to live in Taita.’’ Kelson and Taita are two Hutt Valley suburbs, about 10 minutes drive apart. You could have blown me over with a feather. I saw the same man at the latest golf tournament and now call him the Taita man. This story also reminds me of another occasion when I was an international flight away from Australia and New Zealand. A god damn American woman seated alongside me asked where I was from. When I said New Zealand she replied: “Ah, I’ve been to Sydney.’’ I was puzzled by her reply. Should I tell her that Sydney and New Zealand are separated by a big pool of water? Or should I ask: “The United States, is that the place below Canada?’’ Now for the what you call someone answers. A person from Sydney is called a Sydneysider, a person from Melbourne is a Melburnian, a person from Manchester is a Mancunian, a person from Glasgow is a Glaswegian and a person from Los Angeles is an Angeleno.

GOLFCOMMENT Does your golf club have a plan? By Andrew Whiley A voice from the south
Over the last six weeks I have talked with representatives from eight different golf clubs about the state of the game and where golf clubs are heading. What was interesting was that almost every golf club was facing the same challenges in that they wanted more members and needed to increase income generated from their facilities. The main issues they faced was the aging demographic of the members, declining current memberships, the lack of new memberships, and the reduction of overall income coming into the club. So what can be done about this? In my opinion, it starts by establishing your golf club’s plan for 2020. This isn’t a 10 year plan but a “now to four-year plan” because if many golf clubs don’t act aggressively now to change their direction, they could fold! In my books, the No 1 goal of every golf club should be to have people excited to come through their gates. This means, that members and guests should be excited to play golf, to participate in the club’s golf programmes and excited to use the clubhouse facilities for any number of golfing and non-golfing events. A key issue is that if you cannot create an environment that someone would enjoy coming to in the first place, then why would they wish to return? Attracting all ages from youngsters to the retirees is really important. For this reason, every golf club should have a relationship with a PGA golf professional to run their golf programmes and work with their local district sports association to co-ordinate and link with local sports programmes such as: Snag Golf, Green Prescription and Active Families. I would also encourage all golf clubs that have land capacity to talk to some of the other local sporting facilities. For example, some of the golf clubs I have recently visited could easily incorporate two bowling greens (ideally all-weather artificial surfaces). Many bowling clubs are struggling in the same way that golf clubs are – in that their facilities and memberships are ageing. The groups share the same demographic issues and reduction in incomes with increased
WWW.GOLFERPACIFIC.CO.NZ
costs. Why not start working together and share green-keeping equipment or staff? Could merging club memberships become a win-win for both groups? Other concepts and sporting partnerships that I believe connect well with golf clubs includes working with their local community to establish the club as a home to a walking club, or setting up a foot golf area (soccer balls and big holes), or frisbee golf, archery areas, pétanque and croquet. I totally appreciate that not all golf clubs will have the ability to include these areas into their golf course but it is worth exploring. The clubhouse is often a more available resource for greater income generation. For example, is your clubhouse promoted as a venue for birthday and anniversary celebrations, wakes, quiz nights, bridge or mahjong clubs or as a host venue for Rotary, Lions or other community groups? This can be profitable especially when there is additional income from food and beverage sales at the club. I am shocked that less than 10 percent of all golf clubhouses I visit provide any indication that they are available to be rented by the members and the community. Yes, I know it is taken for granted that this is the case, yet promoting the fact is simple and easy in the clubhouse and also on a club’s website. This is all about positive and proactive marketing. In closing, I urge all golf clubs to take a 360-degree evaluation approach to their club and to their facilities. Survey your members, green fee players, local businesses and community leaders and groups in the community. You want to know the positive and the negatives about what you provide and how you are perceived. Talk with the local sporting office (i.e.: Sport Otago) as they have already conducted sports facilities reviews and are also aware of where effective consolidation can take place. Also take the time to talk with the team at NZ Golf (some great resources can be found on the NZ Golf website > About the game > Info for clubs). But, above all, think about the golf club you and your members want in 2020 and start creating the pathway to achieve it now.

Muriwai Open provides Zwart and Garvey with maiden wins on Charles Tour T
wo new names were added to the Charles Tour honours’ list with Peter Zwart and Amelia Garvey winning the men’s and women’s divisions of the Muriwai Open in Auckland. Zwart completed a wire to wire victory with a smile on his face as he walked the final hole of the season in comfort to win the Autex Muriwai Open by four shots. He showed no signs of easing up all week with rounds of 65, 66, 69 and 70 for an 18 under par total of 270. The Hawke’s Bay professional was determined from the start and his emotions were hard to hide after winning for the first time on the national circuit. “It’s a bit of a relief really,’’ Zwart said. “I have worked hard for this, so to get the job done on the Jennian Homes Charles Tour is very satisfying.” The 29-year-old had made his intentions clear all week, so to win the final event of the Charles Tour season meant much for him and his family. “This is not just me, it’s a team, with everyone back at home helping me the whole way,’’ he said. “It will be nice to celebrate with them back in the bay.’’ Zwart was keen to shed any thoughts he was a nearly man. “It was getting to that stage when you are looked at as a player who has the ability, but never quite pull through. “But now to be considered as a person who has won a four-round tournament in New Zealand, it definitely ticks off a few goals.” Zwart was pleased with the way the Charles Tour is playing it’s part in New Zealand. “There’s an opportunity for everyone. The prize funds are going up and it shows there is more interest in the

game of golf in New Zealand and it’s obviously more beneficial to everyone.” To top the week off for Zwart he shared the lowest round of the tournament with Johnny Tynan with a score of 65 on the first day. Consequently Zwart and Tynan shared a pallet of Asahi beer for their efforts. Garvey’s win in the women’s division of the Muriwai Open confirmed the promise of the 15-year-old. “It’s awesome,’’ Garvey said. “I have struggled to get the win for quite a while so it was nice to have a good day today. I’m pretty glad I didn’t three putt from eight feet on the last,” she added with a laugh. Garvey is in the New Zealand academy so for her to finish this off under pressure is a big step in her development and is certainly one to watch in the future. The Muriwai Open was the final event of the Charles Tour season. The
2016-17 season begins with the Carrus Open in Tauranga in September.

Gold Coast: A golfing mecca N E W S and more affordable than ever By Paul Gueorgieff Golfer Pacific editor
T
hinking of heading to the Gold Coast in Queensland for a winter golf trip? Not sure where to play? I can help. I was there in April and have been there many times beforehand. First let me say that many venues that I did not play on my latest visit are often advertised in this magazine. I have played virtually all of the courses that are regularly advertised and all are very fines courses. Second let me say that many venues on the Sunshine Coast, to the north of Brisbane, are also advertised in this magazine. Once again I have played most of them and without exception they are excellent courses. This is simply a recount of the courses I played last April to provide a little insight if you are considering a Gold Coast golf trip. I must mention at this point the main purpose of the trip was a golf tournament, but it was essentially a social event. I was part of a group of 15 golfers, all from my Tuesday club gathering, plus another 10 wives. These were numbers I was extremely proud of considering we were all from the one golf club and I must pass on my congratulations to Tom Parsons who organised us. The tournament was played at Royal Pines. We played there four times, once for a practice round and the other three times for the tournament proper. Royal Pines has undergone some significant changes recently and the changes certainly don’t make the course easier.
There are 27 holes at Royal Pines and we played what is known as the green nine and the gold nine. Unfortunately the tournament was generally played from the blue tees which was too tough for the type of players in the tournament. Royal Pines is a tough course. A very tough course. Let me put this into perspective for you. The Australian PGA was played at Royal Pines last December and the winning score after four rounds was par. That is very unusual for a fully fledged professional tournament where the winning score is often around 12 under par or better. On virtually every hole you are confronted by water or bunkers, or often both, from either the tee or approaching the green, or, once again, both. But adding to the difficulty is that most of the greens are raised and most have shelves and that means run-offs. From my experience the run-offs could easily be into bunkers or water. My scores on all four days at Royal Pines were poor or very poor. My first reaction to this course was I would never return. But it didn’t take me long to change my mind. I want to go back and get my revenge. I want to go back and try, at least, to post a fair score. My advice is if you go to Royal Pines, don’t play off tees too long for your ability. The course is tough enough. The first two courses we played casually are two of my old Gold Coast favourites. They are Palmer Gold Coast (better known as it’s previous name of
READERS’VIEWS
Robina Woods) and Palmer Colonial. I have played both these courses numerous times and neither has diminished in my liking for them. One of the features of Robina Woods (sorry that’s how I best know the course) is that a good number of holes are totally secluded — you cannot see anyone else on the course other than those on the hole you are playing. There are plenty of bunkers and water is common. Colonial has it’s similarities to Robina Woods, except water comes into play far more often. If you stray off the tee you can more than likely say goodbye to your golf ball. Another course we played was Palm Meadows. I hadn’t played Palm Meadows before but yet another fine golf course. Once again plenty of bunkers and water, although the water was not as dominant as it is at Colonial. Unfortunately we played Palm Meadows on a Sunday afternoon, a day when I presume they get a lot of casual golfers. Consequently it took me five minutes to get out of every bunker — one minute to play my one shot to get out and the next four minutes raking the whole of the bunker which, seemingly, everyone before me had not bothered doing so. Later, from another fairway, I noticed a player who was about to walk away from a bunker without raking it after he played out of it. I yelled out and he sheepishly returned to the bunker before making a pathetic attempt to rake it. Perhaps one of the main at-
RACV Royal Pines Resort
tractions of Royal Pines, Robina Woods, Colonial and Palm Meadows are they are all very close to Surfers’ Paradise. All are no more than 20 minutes’ drive from Surfers’ Paradise which is not long considering the traffic is often very busy. The fourth course we played was a good half-hour away. It was Gainsborough Greens and it is perhaps more of a members’ course. What I mean by that is more of the players are probably members than visitors. But this is another very good course. It’s closing holes are very difficult because of the presence of water. The 18th is a good example. It’s a par five which requires the third shot to carry a big stretch of water to reach the green. That means the second shot needs to be as close to the water as possible to reduce the distance of the third shot. The fifth course we played was Nudgee in Brisbane. This course is literally five minutes drive
from Brisbane International airport and because of that we played on the day before catching the 7pm flight back to Wellington. In other words it fits in perfectly to the travel schedule. Once again another fine course. I would happily play this course every time I am returning home from Brisbane. I haven’t mentioned any prices. Royal Pines was part of our tournament entry fee but the advertised cost is $A150. Three of the courses we played were all under $A50 and all included a cart for two people. Another course was under $A40 because of a reciprocal arrangement with our golf club and another was under $A30 because of deal going at the time. I came to conclusion that green fees on the Gold Coast have reduced greatly from a few years ago. The Gold Coast is really a golfing mecca and is probably now more affordable than ever.

IS THE WRONG PERSON BEING PENALISED? In reply to Paul Gueorgieff’s editorial last month about whether the onus should be on the person asking for a ball to be moved (usually on the green) should also be responsible for it being returned (instead of the person whose ball is being moved), one reader has responded. The current rule penalises the player whose
WWW.GOLFERPACIFIC.CO.NZ
ball has been requested to be moved. Dear sir, I agree with all you have said. One of our lady players from Te Aroha suffered a similar problem. It meant that she missed out on the first prize which was valued at approximately $500. Second prize was about $200.
June 2016
Can a player refuse to mark their ball? I know that this would be unsporting but when the above thing happens it would make you think twice.
Editor: No, you can’t refuse to move your ball.

Sir Bob Charles becomes NZ Golf patron GOLF NEWS
S
ir Bob Charles was elected to the position of New Zealand Golf patron at the organisation’s latest annual meeting. Sir Bob, always the consummate professional, has been a significant part of the golfing landscape in this country and New Zealand Golf said it was with great honour that it announced Sir Bob’s acceptance of this distinguished role. The position was left vacant after the late Sir Thomas Gault died last year. Justice Gault had been a life member of New Zealand Golf for more than 20 years and held the position of New Zealand Golf patron for 22 years. Sir Bob is one of the world’s most renowned and popular golfers, earning the title of golfer of the year after winning The Open in a play-off at Royal Lytham & St Annes in England in 1963. He won nearly 80 titles around the world and in New Zealand’s new year honours of 1999, Charles was appointed a knight companion of The New Zealand Order of Merit for services to golf. Charles was also admitted to the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2008 and recently be-
came the newest honorary member of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club showing his class and worldwide recognition for what he has given to the game. Sir Bob has always taken a keen interest in the development of the game of golf at home. As he continued his golfing success into his senior years, winning over 20 times on the senior tour, he donated a significant part of his earnings to New Zealand Golf and the country’s professional golf tour is named after him. Since 2008, the Charles Tour in New Zealand has grown to become an important tournament series that prepares our best amateurs and young professionals for a successful life as a golfer. Sir Bob continues to have a significant impact and influence in a number of areas across the golfing industry. Sir Bob attended the recent New Zealand Golf annual meeting where he talked about his involvement in golf along with his recently voiced passion for speeding up the pace of play and simplifying the rules of golf.

e started his working career as a bank teller. He later became one of New Zealand’s most famous golfers with his win in The Open Championship in England in a 36-hole playoff. Now he is an honorary member of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews. “I am extremely proud and gratified to be invited to become an honorary member of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club,” said Sir Bob. “Winning The Open was a tremendous part of my career and I have always had a huge affinity for the championship and the wonderful links courses on which it is played. The club is at the heart of golf in St Andrews and
it is a privilege to follow so many other great champions in becoming part of its history.” Gavin Caldwell, captain of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, said: “I am delighted to welcome Sir Bob Charles as an honorary member of the club. “He has graced the sport for many years as one of its outstanding champions and has given back so much to golf by supporting development initiatives in his native New Zealand. Sir Bob has made a substantial contribution to the growth of golf throughout a long and successful career and thoroughly deserves this recognition.” Born in the Wairarapa town of Carterton in 1936, Sir Bob discov-
ered a love for golf at an early age and began work as a bankteller. He went on to win the New Zealand Open as an amateur in 1954 and enjoyed an extensive amateur career before turning professional in 1960. Sir Bob became the first left-handed golfer to win on the PGA Tour at the Houston Classic three years later. In that same year, he finished tied with American Phil Rodgers at The Open at Royal Lytham and went on to win the 36-hole play-off by eight shots with a memorable display of putting. In 1969, Sir Bob won the World Matchplay Championship and, as well as achieving numerous victories around the world, he amassed a string of top five fin-
ishes in major championships, including finishing tied second in The Open in 1968 and second the following year. He then embarked on a successful senior career, winning the Senior Open on two occasions, at Turnberry in 1989 and at Royal Lytham, 30 years on from his victory there in The Open. Sir Bob announced his retirement from competitive golf after the Senior Open in 2010 at the age of 74. Sir Bob received a CBE for services to golf in 1992, a knighthood in 1999 and was appointed to The Order of New Zealand for services to his home country in 2011.

By Duncan Simpson New Zealand PGA Chief Executive
The training of a PGA professional has changed significantly over the last 100 years, but the basic mission – to grow the game of golf and make it easier to play and enjoy -– remains essentially unchanged. When Fred Hood arrived from St Andrews, Scotland, in 1902 to become New Zealand’s first full time professional golfer, he had no formal training in finance and business management, market research, physiology, anatomy, psychology, writing business plans, and many other topics which form part of the PGA trainee professional programme of today. What he did have was expertise in club making, golf course design and maintenance, training caddies, coaching the game, and playing it to a high standard. Fred had no business degree, but he knew that to make a living he would have to attract new people to the game, provide the equipment they needed and teach them how to use it. He also knew how to build the golf courses (which were few at the time) for them to play on, and organise and play in professional events to lift the profile of golf and provide him with a supplementary income stream. The same approach was duplicated by
10
The heart of a successful golf club many of Fred’s contemporaries as they set out from Scotland and England to grow the game in Australia, South Africa, the USA and Canada, and of course many other countries including New Zealand. They built the foundations of today’s golf industry because of their expertise in the game and business of golf. It would be interesting to see what Fred thought of the New Zealand golf scene in 2016. He would no doubt be pleased to see that we now have 395 golf courses, and that most of them are accessible and affordable. He would also note the high numbers of people playing the game, even though most do that on a casual basis without belonging to a golf club. He would be amazed -– possibly baffled initially -– by the array of technology available to the modern professional, as well as the huge advances in ball and equipment technology. He would too be impressed by the qualifications and knowledge of today’s club professionals and their trainees. But on the other hand, he would note with concern the financial struggles of many golf clubs, and the relatively low
presence of PGA professionals in urban and regional golf clubs. He would also be puzzled at the disconnect between the extra knowledge and qualifications they possess today, and the use of this by golf club management and governance, whilst noting some encouraging signs of a number of clubs starting to use PGA members in multi-purpose and management roles. He would possibly conclude that he got better recognition as an expert in the game and business of golf in 1902 than his counterpart in 2016. This contrast is not unique to New Zealand. While on holiday in Australia last month, I visited two golf resorts within 10km of each other in a popular tourist area. Resort A had a small membership (220 members), but a thriving green fee trade, and a noticeable non-golfer presence through its hotel, apartment, spa and family targeted activities. Resort B was larger than A, and had been through an expansive refurbishment programme which unfortunately seemed to have stopped before the golf course, which was basically empty and poorly maintained.
June 2016
One obvious difference was the lack of a proper pro shop and PGA professional in resort B, which was as dead as the proverbial Dodo on the day I visited. It may not have been the only factor in play, but in terms of success or otherwise as a golf facility, it certainly stood out. By contrast resort A had a PGA professional who was the first point of contact for members and visitors alike, who had an encouraging or motivating comment for everyone as they checked in. It reminded me of the words of Sandy Jones, chief executive of the PGA of Great Britain and Ireland: “The PGA professional is the heart of a golf club.” Jones likened the role of the PGA pro to that of the heart in the human body: a healthy heart is necessary to keep blood circulating to all parts of the system. Without a healthy heart, the body cannot live for long. That also means that the PGA professional must live up to the analogy of a healthy heart, and in subsequent articles I will show how this is working in successful golf clubs in New Zealand and around the golfing world.

One of the more defining images of New Zealand golf By Dean Murphy New Zealand Golf Chief Executive
D
uring corporate planning exercises, employees are often asked to present one image that defines their company. A picture, of course, is worth a thousand words and this exercise is a useful way for people to consider the perception, image, values and personality of their company. Recently, I have had opportunity to go through this exercise in relation to the game of golf. While it’s easy to go for dramatically beautiful golfing landscapes or images of golfers playing and having fun together, for me there is one image that sums up the game of golf perfectly. It is the picture of Sir Bob Charles and Lady Verity with The Open Championship trophy in 1963. For me, this image has everything. When I look at this picture I see all sorts of things. Dedication, professionalism, honour, family, pride, enjoyment and humbleness. I also see immaculate presentation and a good deal of joy. These
Bob Charles and his wife Verity pose with The Open Championship trophy in 1963
are all features of this great game and if ever I need to think of all that is good about golf, I refer to this image. While this is a historical image, Sir Bob is far from a man of the past. These days he is as active as ever and is full of ideas and thoughts on how to take this great game into the future. In particular he has a strong passion for speeding up the pace of play and simplifying the rules of golf. I love that about Sir Bob and every time I look back at the Open Championship
photo from 53 years ago, I wonder if he could have contemplated that all these years later he would still be living and breathing the game as much as he still does. That is what is unique about golf. It’s a game that continues to uniquely enrich the lives of its participants. No other sport has what we have and we should all celebrate this. With this in mind, it was fitting that Sir Bob was recently elected to the position of patron for New Zealand Golf. Always the consummate professional, Sir Bob has been a significant part of the golfing landscape in New Zealand and it was with great honour that we announced his acceptance of this distinguished role. The position was left vacant after the late Sir Thomas Gault sadly passed away in May, 2015. Justice Gault had been a life member of New Zealand Golf for more than 20 years and held the position of New Zealand Golf patron for 22 years. Sir Bob is of course one of the world’s most renowned and popular golfers, becoming Champion Golfer of the Year in 1963. He won nearly 80 titles around
the world and in the New Year Honours of 1999, Charles was appointed a knight companion of The New Zealand Order of Merit for services to golf. Charles was admitted to the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2008 and has also recently become the newest honorary member of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club. To this day, Sir Bob continues to have a significant impact and influence in a number of areas across the golfing industry. Outside of his playing career, Sir Bob has always taken a keen interest in the development of the game of golf here at home. As he continued his golfing success into his senior years, winning over 20 times on the Senior Tour, he donated a significant part of his earnings to New Zealand Golf. Since 2008, the Charles Tour has grown to become an important tournament series that prepares our best amateurs and young professionals for a successful life on tour. Thank you Sir Bob. For me you epitomise all that is good about our great game and we are thankful for your continued input and guidance.

GOLFCOACHING By Anthony Barkley NZPGA Professional
C
oaching methods have changed considerably over the years through technology, research and experimentation. Days have gone where the professional will stand on a range for 30 minutes with a client only. Video has been around for a number of years which was a great new element for seeing swing positions and now with an ipad its very portable and efficient. New programmes allow the coach to forward lesson rundowns to each client with a click of a button. Its moved on even further now with the advancements of the Doplar Radar systems designed for golf and other sports. For those that don’t know the FlightScopes and Track Man launch monitors were developed from missile tracking radars and are what you generally see when you watch golf on TV and they track the ball once hit. They are very accurate and helpful for a coach as they can see much more of actual data of impact. Important FlightScope Data: • Clubface consistency at impact averaged over a number of shots. • The consistency of the journey of club into impact and post impact. • Understanding on an individual basis
100percentgolf.com
Golf Coaching - times have changed what creates a straight and consistent shot. The naked eye can only see so much and video will confirm a lot but the FlightScope tells all. I think many people don’t trust this form of technology or think it’s too high tech for them but it’s really effective for any level in pointing out inconsistent factors to their swing. This must be emphasised that we use this tool to help consistent shots, not to try to make your style perfect. So in essence we look to improve the skill of golf rather than style as skill always beats style. You can see this on a Saturday at your home club or even on the PGA tour. Bubba Watson or Jordan Speith don’t swing it fantastic (style) but their skill is awesome. Examples: SKILL
STYLE
Pitching
Perfect swing plane
Short game
Perfect Grip
Shot shaping
30 deg spine angle at set up
Get out of trouble shots
Stack and tilt

One plane Swing
We don’t see many swing models any more as I think they have not worked well for everyone. Lydia Ko works on a
swing model by David Leadbetter that seems to work for her so they can work but I think now, more than any other time golfers need to work on elements that make their own swing work as generic approaches may be too hard to master. An Example FlightSCope Golf Lesson on myself I played a game and it didn’t go well. I don’t practice like I should any more so consistency is very difficult to find. I needed to find out what was going on. I put myself through the FlightScope and found the face at impact was closed, then open, then closed etc so no wonder I was hitting it poorly the day before. Firstly, as a coach looking at the grip comes first as we know the grip is responsible for a consistent clubface position at impact. Tidied that up and then started to hit balls working on one clubface position only (slightly open at impact by thinking of keeping clubface square to target longer). BANG, consistent flight patterns started to occur and I didn’t have to make major changes. Im not saying I will shoot 66 next time I play but now have a plan and should be able to play better.
So the skill was to create a consistent pattern to rely on, not a perfect position. Actually seeing what the face was doing was very valuable. Actual data: Face Before Change

These are just numbers but for a coach it paints a picture that equals better shots = happy golfer and coach. So by having a lesson with a FlightScope, anyone can understand more of how their swing works and what they can do to play consistently. It doesn’t have to be a swing overhaul to fix that slice nor do you have to hit thousands of balls (unless you like to) to make a positive change. Even better is to head out on the course with your pro and a launch monitor to play those holes you have issues with making it more realistic to your next round of golf. On course lessons are very practical for clients games and should be included in any game improvement plan. Check out my tips on our website www.100percentgolf.com and contact me anytime with any questions.

Odyssey Toe Up Putter W H AT ’ S N E W
Odyssey is the leader in putter innovation, and we relentlessly push ourselves to develop new technologies that golfers can use to roll in more putts. And we’ve reached that tremendously high standard once again with our new Odyssey Toe Up Putters. We’ve used Stroke Balanced technology to reduce torque during the stroke for minimal twisting, so when you roll it, it’s going to be much easier to get the face back to square. We do it by strategically placing more weight towards the face to balance the putter, and the CG is aligned with the center of the face. All this is designed to promote a more consistent stroke, and when you put your finger up to the face, you’ll see that it balances toe up like no other putter in the market. And of course we didn’t stop there. Our Metal-X face is fly cut face so that it’s perfectly flat and it’s chemically etched, which leads to a pure roll. Our hi-def alignment highlights the proper address over the ball. And the Superstroke Flatso 1.0 grip gives you Tour-proven feel and new Counter Core technology. Stroke Balanced™ For More Consistency We’ve engineered our Stroke Balanced technology to reduce torque during the stroke for minimal twisting, so you can keep the putter on line. And we engineered the shaft axis so that it’s specifically aligned with the Center of Gravity. By putting all this into the Toe Up, we’ve made it a lot easier to get the face back
to square at impact. And that promotes a much more consistent stroke. With our Tour-proven Metal-X face, we’ve used a fly cut to make the face perfectly flat and a chemical etching, which leads to a pure roll. We got it right down to the last detail. The 3 white lines that worked so well with our Marxman family are now in the Odyssey Toe Up, and the lines absolutely pop off the Charcoal PVD finish. This hi-def system lets you setup perfectly to the ball. The Toe Up comes standard with the Superstroke Flatso 1.0 grip design that allows for even pressure in both hands to eliminate tension in the wrists and forearms. The grip includes Superstroke’s new counter core technology. Weights can be purchased at your local retailer.

The other schools who enter players but not a full team were Tauraroa Area School, Kamo High and Pompallier. NORTH HARBOUR PUPUKE JUNIOR PENNANTS
The Pupuke Junior Pennant team have won the 2016 North Harbour Junior Pennants for the 3rd year in a row. Harbour Golf Junior Coordinator Pam Greenhalgh credits the Pupuke Golf Club for their support of junior golf and the strong junior culture they have developed over many years. One of the key people that deserve some credit is the clubs Junior Director – John Kavanagh. John has been the role for the last 6 years and has spent hours of his time teaching young people how to play golf and manage themselves both on and off the golf course.
The photo of the winning team from left to right is: Kaleb Wharepouri, John Kavanagh, Amy Im, Jacob Wherepouri and Sam Dodds.
MONDIALE PRO AM
Another successful Mondiale Pro Am was played at Omaha Beach Golf club earlier this year. The weather played its part and cou-
pled with the course conditions, offered an ideal opportunity for great scoring. Michael Hendry and Ryan Fox shot course record 63s on Saturday, followed closely by Troy Ropiha on 65. Michael backed up his 63 with a 67 to finish 1 shot clear of Tae Koh and 2 shots ahead of Ryan Fox. Tae shot a very tidy 64 on Sunday ‘leap frogging’ Fox who stumbled on #14 by hitting an eight iron out of bounds for his second shot. Geoff Smart PGA Tournament Director complimented Omaha Beach Golf Club on the success of the weekend and made special mention of the preparation and high standard of the course. It’s easy to see, with feedback like that, why we attract a quality field every year. A big thumbs up to Corey, Allen, Rusty and Eddie as well as all of the course volunteers for the huge effort and an outstanding course presented for the tournament. Amateur results were: Men – Gross Phil MosleyMuriwai 153 Stableford Colin DaviesManukau76 Women – Gross Suzette Eastmond Omaha 158 Stableford Rhonda McCreaRoyal AKL83 The Team event was won by The Mondiale team of Phil Bramwell, Dave Rush and Ken Millar on 243.
NORTH SHORE GOLF CLUB RAISE MONEY FOR BREAST CANCER CURE
On Thursday 12 May the North Shore Golf Club held its Annual Charity Day Golf tournament for women with all proceeds going to Breast Cancer Cure. A capacity
field turned out, 58 pairs, (there was even a waiting list), to show support for a cause close to all our hearts. The guest speaker announced the very sobering statistics that one in nine women will be affected by this sinister disease. This equated to one person at almost every table in the room. Added to entry fees, a silent auction and raffles enabled a cheque in excess of $4,000 to be sent to Breast Cancer Cure. The idea of dressing in pink, the clubhouse being decorated and a pink theme running through the prizes, made the occasion a celebration of life and hope. Well done to North Shore Golf Club for organising a charity event for such a worthy cause that effects so many.
It has been a great year for North Shore Golf Club and Peninsula Golf Club in North Harbour women’s pennant competitions in 2016.
With the season complete North Shore (pictured) has won the A Pennant Grade and both sections of the Midweek competitions while Peninsula (pictured below) has won the B Pennant Grade and both sections of the Weekend competitions. Congratulations to both clubs on their successful pennant seasons.

PUPUKE WOMEN DOMINATE NORTH HARBOUR WOMENS 9 HOLE PENNANTS
Pupuke Golf Club can lay claim to easily having the most successful 9 hole pennant team in the North Harbour competition. The talented lady golfers won the 9 Hole Pennant trophy at Helensville Golf Club in the final round of round robin play on the 2nd of May. The team finished on 210 points, comfortably clear of 2nd pace getters Peninsula Golf Club. This marks the sixth consecutive year Pupuke have won the trophy and eighth time overall since the competition was formed in 2007 due to the increasing popularity of the 9 hole format.

LYDIA KO NORTH HARBOUR AGE GROUP CHAMPIONSHIP UPDATE
Demand for places in the field has exceeded expectations for the inaugural event being held at Gulf Harbour Country Club on the 5th and 6th of June. The tournament has a full field including 14 international players as well as a number of top level national and local players. The event is being supported by former North Harbour representative and current World Number One Lydia Ko of whom herself is a member at the prestigious Gulf Harbour Country Club. Harbour Golf has also been lucky enough to gain the interest of the Hills Golf Academy in Brisbane Australia whereby they have promoted the tournament through the Asian Pacific Junior Golf Association. They are donating a one year scholarship to the overall gross winner of the event as well as three one month scholarships. The tournament will host both girls and boys in age groups of under 19, Under 16 and under 14. North Harbour Golf’s Executive Officer Andrew Leventis is thrilled by the quality and number of entries into this event at all levels. “This year’s event has come together brilliantly with the support of Lydia, The Hills Golf Academy, The Constellation Trust, The Gulf Harbour Country Club and its members. It has been a vision of ours for a number of years to run a high level junior tournament that will allow junior players to compete within their age levels. The entry numbers received are a lot more than we had anticipated and the future of this event is already looking good”. The Gulf Harbour Country Club management is also very excited to be hosting this inaugural tournament and are looking for-

The best ten under 19 junior development players from the North Harbour district have added the first trophy to the cabinet for 2016 with a win in the annual development triangular held at Omokoroa Golf Club in the Bay of Plenty. The event was created a few years ago to assist the North Harbour, Bay of Plenty and Waikato golf associations in providing additional competition for promising up and coming junior boys, with many getting their first taste of district representative golf. The team travelled down on Tuesday 26th of April and got off to a strong start in the afternoon taking a first round lead with 12 points to Bay of Plenty’s 9.5 and Waikato’s 8.5. In the 2nd round on Wednesday morning North Harbour were to hold onto the lead winning with a total of 23 points to Bay of Plenty’s 20.5 and Waikato’s 16.5. The team of Troy Baker (Redwood Park), Matthew Friend (Gulf Harbour), Logan Hooper (Waitemata), Sul Im (Huapai), Jack Lee (Pupuke), Jake Lee (Huapai), Davis Oh (Gulf Harbour), Nathan Mayes (Gulf Harbour), Nicholas Svensen (North Shore) and Reinhardt Saunderson (Gulf Harbour) have illustrated just how strong junior golf is in the North Harbour district. Many of these boys will be going onto top level representative golf as their games develop and congratulations on a great start to the representative season.
ELA GRIMWOOD GETS FIRST RUN AT NATIONAL LEVEL
It was a great experience for talented North Harbour / Gulf Harbour player Ela Grimwood recently as she was selected to represent New Zealand in the 2016 Australian Junior Girls Amateur Championship held in Tasmania at the Devonport
Golf Club from the 13th-15th of April. “It was a really good experience representing New Zealand and it was such an honour. I definitely felt a lot more pressure because I was representing my country, which really has been a dream for me”. Ela described the course in Tasmania being very different to any course she had played in NZ with very small challenging greens. She would shoot rounds of 78, 76, 72 and 78 to finish on a four round total of 304 (+8) and a credible T37th place out of the near 80 players competing in a top quality field. Well done Ela!
2016 NORTH HARBOUR MEN’S FINALS DAY
North Shore Golf Club was the host for finals day of the 2016 competition on Sunday 15th of May. The golf course was in superb condition and clear blue skies greeted the players. Muriwai Golf Links had two teams present with their top team winning the major prize, the Nobilo trophy by a margin of 5-3 over a very game Huapai Golf Club. The also won the Rangitoto Reserve division for the 3rd successive year after a three hole playoff when they finished tied 4-4 with Waitakere in regulation play. In the promotion / relegation match North Shore squeaked past West Coast Trophy holders Redwood Park by 4.5 / 3.5 points to stay in the top division when the new season starts in 2017. Muriwai capped off their stunning season with yet another trophy on the day, when their team also won the Sunderland Trophy down the road at Pupuke Golf Club. Peninsula Golf Club was the other club taking home silverware when they claimed the Kaipara Trophy at the Waitakere Golf Club. Congratulations to all finalists, winning teams and to Muriwai who now claim bragging rights over other clubs in regards to men’s pennants for 2016!

WAIKATO WEIGHT FOR AGE BENCHMARK SURPASSED
Paeroa golfer Tony Wyllie created history on his home track recently when he

managed what many aspire to by very few achieve in their latter golfing years. The eighty three year old club stalwart carded a round of eighty one to becomeunlikely as it may seem- the first player ever to record a better than Weight for Age score on Paeroa’s Rotokohu Valley – first graced by golfers seventy years ago. While some clubs, especially those with par of less than 72, have a board with various names detailing the feat, Paeroa did not have a name to display until two years ago. On that occasion, the same player managed to match his age with his gross score. This time, Wyllie playing off a handicap of sixteen, put together halves of thirty nine and forty two on the par 72 layout (course rating of 122) and thereby also claim the “better than W.F.A.” distinction.
NICK VOKE PLAYING CONSISTENTLY IN THE USA
Young New Zealand Golfer Nick Voke continues to perform well and consistently for his US Based Iowa State team.” The cyclones” finished tied for second at the Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa last month This is Nick’s eighth top twenty finish in the ten tournaments he has competed in this season. The tournament was played at Finkbine Golf Course which
is home to the University of Iowa’s Men’s and Women’s Collegiate teams the Hawkeyes. The Hawkeyes are Iowa State’s nearest rivals whom they tied for second with in this tournament.
HAURAKI 54 HOLE GOLF TOURNAMENT
We live in an age when changing demographics including Saturday work, extended shopping times and a greater choice of leisure activities has negatively effected participation in most traditional New Zealand weekend sporting codes-especially in country districts. However, the Hauraki Golf Club’s annual 54 Hole Tournament is one event on that district’s sporting scene which somehow has survived these challenges to its popularity. Again, a near full field, made up of players from nineteen different clubs from the Thames Valley, Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Auckland region, and a group from Princetown, Victoria, enjoyed perfect weather, a immaculately presented course and typical Hauraki catering and hospitality on May 14th and 15th when the 45th tournament was staged. Several players have played on most occasions since May 1971, but only one, local golfing stalwart Len Cameron, has played every year. His handicap has slipped out a little since his ‘glory days’, but he was again amongst the prize winners and has promised to “shout the bar” if he can remain competitive and claim his half century of tournaments in 2021. Jason Boobyer, (Hamilton Golf Club) winner in 2014 and 2015, played exceptionally well throughout the weekend to
again claim the tournament champion’s title by a comfortable margin. Marc Lesch (Hauraki) was another to finish well clear – securing the Senior Nett prize by ten strokes. Cullen Aislabie (Hauraki) averaged forty points a round in winning the Senior Stableford section while Luke Yeager (Hauraki) made it a one horse race in the Junior Gross contest. The main prize winners were: Seniors: Gross – Jason Boobyer (Hamilton) 205. Tyler Wood (Ngahinepouri) 211, Douglas Millington (Horsham Downs) 211.Ben Kennedy (Hohora) 216. Nett – Marc Lesch (Hauraki) 192, Peter Davey (Hauraki) 202, Gary Paetai (Te Aroha) 205, Greg Twist (Hauraki) 207. Stableford- Cullen Aislabie 120, Geoff Morgan (Hauraki) 118, John Davis (Hauraki) 114. Nicholas Baillie (Cambridge) 112. Juniors: Gross- Luke Yeager (Hauraki) 239, Dave Body (Paeroa) 252, Taylor Pohio (Te Aroha) 253, Kris MacNamara (Haurak) 257. Nett- Aaron Chen (Whitford Park) 201, Keith Pye (Hauraki) 204, Len Cameron (Hauraki) 208 Warwick Davey (Hauraki) 212. Stableford – John Reid (Pukekohe) 118, Brett Baillie (Cambridge) 115, Robin Hill (Hauraki) 109, Don Lyon (Thames) 109.
Cambridge’s Lauriston Park retirement village, Golf Warehouse, Hamilton and New World, Glenview. Players contended with showers and the odd squall but the threatened storms, thunder, lightning and flooding failed to arrive. More than 30 clubs ranging from Sherwood Park to Otaki were represented. In the mixed pairs division Terry and Karen Tapp, Clarks Beach, topped off four months golf and travelling in their motorhome with a win on 119pts. Waverley’s Bob Black, with former New Zealand Senior’s secretary Marie Roberts, came second on 113 with local golfers Dennis Ticklepenny and Marilyn Gilbert, claiming third with 105. Fourth were Colin Harrison and current NZ Senior’s secretary Launa Seddon on 100pts. Cath Matthews, Peninsula, registered a hole-in-one on Narrows’ 170m 10th. The men’s division was won by Riverside club captain John Bridle teaming up with board member Peter Claringbold with a combined score of 117. More locals Tim Brooker and Roger Hocking took out second on 112 with Riverside’s John Crone and Hamilton Golf Club member Bill Noble third on 109pts.

HOHEPA REIGNS SUPREME AT NATIONALS
Local golfer Herewini Hohepa took out the prestigious 2016 senior men’s NZ Maori golf title held at Taupo golf club. With family support and close friends in attendance the Stewart Alexander no.1 pennant player toughed out a close final against a 2.4 handicapper Tyson Tawera (Hastings golf Club) winning 2/1 in the final. As a duel member of both Stewart Alexander & Te Awamutu golf clubs the quiet and unassuming young man went about his way coming 3rd in stroke play and proceeding on to the final match where he won. It was a gruelling 5 day tournament that has the first 2 days as stroke play qualifiers for seeding then splits into divisions according to gross scores and handicap. Match play starts on Wednesday and 2 rounds on Thursday with finals on Friday. The senior women’s title went to Te Rongopai Clay 0.8 handicap (Titahi golf club) who overcome Mary Lines from (Te Teko golf club) Te Rongopai has won this tournament before when Te Awamutu & Stewart Alexander hosted the Nationals in 2011. Due to winning the national title Hohepa has gained entry into the NZ amateur golf tournament and also is eligible for the NZ open qualifier tournaments. Flanked by his family, his mother Deb Hohepa said “It was a fantastic week the
whole family was there to witness his feats – we’re still on a high” Deb also mentions about everyone who has helped her son along in golf. ” I know that Herewini has had a lot of support along the way in golf and I want to say thank-you to everyone” Also a huge acknowledgement to Victor Roberts who has been there from day dot with Herewini. Victor caddied the whole 5 days for Herewini and has done for many other major events as well. Thank – you Victor. Not only was he supported by family Herewini is a part of another golfing group, D12 or the Dirty Dozen these ‘Loyals’ are a squad led by Joe Tapu (Stewart) who support and attend many maori golf tournaments and initiatives. Herewini has been a part of this special team since 12 yrs old and always has made them proud of his achievements. There were a few D12 loyalists or (Stewy members) that featured well in the 2016 NZ Maori golf nationals they are: Tema Tapu Semi finals 2nd 16 Ladies Dean Scott Intermediate Men’s Champion 2016 John Emery Semi finals 2nd 16 Intermediate Romana Graham Intermediate Plate Champion 2016 Herewini Hohepa Senior Men’s Champion 2016 Congratulations to the above people from our club on representing us at a national level, especially Dean and Herewini who won their respective sections out
right. We are expecting great things from Herewini who has been offered a ‘part’ scholarship from Iowa state university, maybe he can shine the torch like other local golfing talent Compton Pikari who has slotted in comfortably at Dixie state university.

BAY OF PLENTY OMANU TRIUMPH AGAIN
The Omanu Men’s Championship Pennant team led all the way through pool play this year and deservedly retained their title in the Grand Final played at Taupo last month by defeating Tauranga 5 games to 4. Tauranga had the edge after the morning foursomes with a 2-1 advantage however only Chris Posa and Byron Willis managed to secure singles victories for the Gate Pa team. Omanu number 6 Keegan Wiltshier gave himself the perfect 19th birthday present but not without a few late speed wobbles. Early on he looked to be cruising at 6 up on 16 year old Josh Presley but then lost 5 holes in a row to be only 1 up on the short Par 4 17th. However his superb tee shot found the middle of the green and a 2 putt birdie secured the first singles win for Omanu after Posa had beaten Omanu number 5 Paul Crone on the 15th. The middle group singles between Omanu’s Tawera Williams and Jobey Hudson and Tauranga’s Byron Willis and Kingsley Wright provided all the drama. The news coming from the top seeds was that Jordan Golding and Shaun Campbell held the edge over Karl Knedler and Sam Davis so with Omanu favoured to secure those two matches the pressure was on Williams and Hudson to get the 5th game in.

Willis kept Tauranga’s chances alive after Williams missed the fairway on 16 and managed to drive the 17th to keep his nose in front. He backed this up making the green on the strong Par 3 finishing hole and even the matches at 4 all. However Jobey Hudson hit a great shot into 18 then calmly binned a 3 metre putt to win 1 up over Wright and take any thoughts of a play-off out of the equation. Manager Ron Sisson who for many years represented Manawatu –Wanganui at Inter-provincial level was justly proud of his young charges and especially his top order where Jordan Golding and Shaun Campbell who both had their first taste on senior Interprovincial Golf last year sent an emphatic message to the Bay selectors that they were ready for the big league. The combined Rotorua team had to work all the way to defeat a determined Mount Maunganui to take the Silver Ladies Brenda Milne trophy. Led by Bay representatives Rotana Howard and Heather Keefe, Rotorua were favoured to take the title and led 2-1 after the foursomes. Sue Aitken secured a singles win over Debbie Maindonald for the Mount and Judy Cameron halved with fellow Masters representative Shelley McElroy and although most matches went close to the wire the Rotorua / Springfield combination prevailed in the other 4 singles matches with Di Gilmore defeating Car-
en van der Meys, Gloria Mayes prevailing over Gillian Lees along with Keefe and Howard both winning. Opotiki seniors put a dent in Springfield’s aspirations of returning to the Championship division by claiming the Senior Championship. A 2-1 advantage in the foursome proved to be the deciding factor and Eastern Bay top 3 of Keanau Howe, Sam Howe and Micky Huriwaka all claimed wins to secure a 5-4 victory. Mount Maunganui completed a very successful season by taking the Intermediate division title built on a strong foursomes effort where they only dropped half a game then Craig Nicholson and Keith Smith both won their singles matches and Gerry Fox gained a half to secure the victory without having to rely on the top of the table matches. Springfield were too strong for Omokoroa in the Junior final in winning the foursomes 3 zip and were the first team back in the clubhouse to celebrate their victory.
CLUB CHAMPS AT TURANGI
Turangi Golf club recently finished their club championships. Exciting Senior finals went to 35 and 36 holes. The winners were: Tira George, Richard Wilson, Doug Holley, Wayne Donald. Ladies winners were: Fran McCarthy, Christine Millward, Judy Gillespie.
OMOKOROA MATCHPLAY FINALS
Omokoroa, the home club of Kieron Muir, front cover and featured player
in last months Pacific Golfer, held their annual matchplay finals last month. The weather conditions were perfect and the competition fierce. All members had their chance to be in the finals as the competition was open to all and played over several weeks culminating on Saturday 30 April. Some played over 36 holes, others 18 and still more played just 9 holes. Only one pairing had to play more than their allotted 36, as Sue Olsen came out the winner over Pixie Lochhead after playing an extra two holes. The men were in four divisions, Senior, Intermediate Junior and ‘C’ Grade according to handicap. The Ladies played in three divisions, Silver and Bronze one and two. Not forgetting the nine hole men and women. A fantastic day was had by all, including the many members who came out to watch and enjoy the warm sunshine and some great golf. Prize giving, held later, saw the clubhouse brimming over as the support for this event has never been better.
2016 PRESIDENTS CUP
It was pleasing to see 20 pairs venture in calm and good golfing conditions at the Mount Maunganui Golf Club (Round 2) on 8th May. The enthusiasm, the challenge and the conditions resulted in some very good scores from both women and men players. Playing in their first round of the competition Melanie and David Cho set the scoring alight with a total of 85 points (43/42) but very closely followed by last
leading pair from last week, Mary-Jane & Geoff Barry with 82 points (43/39). Backing up after a problem first Round Sue Jones and John Uden made a charge with 79 points (39/40 as did Elspeth Wing & Ross Newnham with 79 points (39/40) There were 7 women and 7 men who returned points of 39 to 43 with 12 pairs managing to score 72 points or better. Round 1 & 2 Progress Result. The scene is all set for the 3rd and final round next Sunday in what looks like being a close contest behind the clear leaders Mary Jane & Geoff Barry. But then came along the late starters Melanie & David Cho, who with their 85 look to be in a position to mount a serious challenge. The race for the minor places will be a real contest with 12 or more pairs who could with a good score move into second place. It all depends on the best 2 of the 3 rounds. Results: Round 2. er at the Mount Maunganui Golf Club on 15th May. Scoring was very even as each of the pairs tried their best to take out the trophy despite the 2nd round leaders having what looked like a hand lead. Only two players managed to return a score of over 40 points, Melanie Cho with 44 and Geoff Barry 43 points. R Horsfall scored a 39 points followed by Q Nam on 38 and another 5 players with 37 poimts. Pair scoring was again quite impressive with 2 pairs on 77 points, Melanie & David Cho and Bella & Charlie Kim. Next were 2 Pairs on 74 points – Helen & Roman Tomson and Mary-Jane & Geoff Barry with Laurel & Mike Flattery on 73. The Trophy – Best 2 out of 3 rounds. As expected the final round presented a nail biting finish with the late starters Melanie and David Cho setting scoring alight with 85 points (43/42) chasing the 2round leaders of Mary-Jane & Geoff Barry with a total of 161 points. It was all down to what each pair could score in their final round. In the finish, one point separated the top pairs with Melanie & David Cho, 162 (85 & 77) squeaking in by one point over Mary-Jane & Geoff Barry, 161 (79 & 82). The next best pairings recorded totals of 148 some 14 points behind the winners. This competition has welcomed the many new pairings to Sunday Mixed Golf, including new club members, and especially their enthusiastic involvement over
the full three rounds and enjoying the golf, the competition and above all meeting other club members.

holes which meant they had to continue from where they had started, to find a winner. On the Friday only two matches were tied and as usual had to revert to a chip-off to decide the winners. One chip-off was easy to determine the winning pair as their ball was distinctly closer to the hole but for the other match a measure was required with the winning pair being 50 mm closer to the hole than their opposition. 96 players took part, the field covered entries from NorthlandParaparaumu, plus one from Inwald in Ashurst.

Each day there was a different form of ‘foursomes’ played, this format
added another dimension to the game of golf, resulting in a lot of laughter out on the courses. Presenting the prizes to the winner was Leonie Davies, Sales Manager, Summerset Mountain View.

days, to host the inaugural Hawkes Bay 4-Course Golf & Wine Classic from Monday October 31 to Thursday November 3 this year. Hastings, Maraenui, Napier and Hawkes Bay golf clubs have teamed up to present a 4-day event that includes gross, net and stableford prizes across age and handicap divisions. Hastings is one of New Zealand’s bestknown club courses, as the host of many amateur events over the years and the proud home of one of New Zealand’s most successful amateur players, the late Stuart Jones. In addition to a raft of club and district titles, Jones won a staggering seven national amateur championships. He represented New Zealand from 1953 to 1975, playing in seven Eisenhower Trophy events. His most notable achievements came when he won two professional events and the 1967 Canadian Amateur Championship. Jones died in 2012, aged 87, but his legend lives on. Hastings Golf Club is an outstanding course, well known for the quality of its greens and beautiful grassed fairways. Napier Golf Club is presented by one of the country’s few female greenkeepers, Ingrid van Steenbergen. A former district representative, these days she balances her work-life with other interests and hobbies off the course. Napier also has a proud history of hosting many amateur events as well as being part of the 2016 Golf & Wine Classic. It will also host the 2017 New Zealand Women’s Senior Match Play Championships in February. One of the country’s oldest courses, formed in 1898 at the current site of Waiohiki, it is laid out over three distinct areas of land separated by roadways. Distinctive woodcarvings and ancient Maori gravesites give this course a unique character. Maraenui Golf Club lies on the coast road between the two cities of Napier and Hastings. In addition to a quality 18-hole layout, the club also manages an adjacent nine-hole challenger for beginners and social players. Priding itself as being one of the ‘friendliest’ clubs, Maraenui has a tight, tree-lined challenge
25
that demands accuracy, especially off the tee. Like Hastings and Napier, Maraenui is also an easy-walking course with sea breezes often coming into play. The last, but not least, host club is The Hawkes Bay Golf Club, opened in 1969, and formerly known as the Flaxmere Golf Club. The youngest of the four selected courses, Hawkes Bay is laid out on a pumice base and according to an original design by Commander John Harris. British golf course architect Harris is noted for his contribution to the world-renowned Wairakei Golf Course near Taupo. From the efforts of many hours work by volunteers carrying buckets of pumice away, the Hawkes Bay course now presents wide, tree-lined fairways with much wildlife on site including tui, doves, wild ducks, plovers and herons. Golfers are treated to wonderful views of Te Mata Peak and the northern Ruahine Range from many of the holes. The Hawkes Bay Golf & Wine Classic will be set in a rich region celebrated for its wines, food markets, unique gannet colony, and Art Deco architecture. Wine from the area, over 100 wineries to choice from, will feature strongly at the functions and prize table, of course. Perhaps most significant for golfing visitors, however, is that it is on the doorstep of Tom Doak’s Cape Kidnappers masterpiece, which is currently [as at January 15, 2016 update] rated number 16 in the world by Golf Digest. All players in this year’s Hawkes Bay Golf & Wine Classic will be able to play golf at Cape Kidnappers on Friday, November 4. Now in its 12th year of operation, Cape Kidnappers continues to amaze all visitors with cliffedge landscapes from the driving range to the 18th green. The course’s infinity hole and ‘pirateplanks’ are unique features. Tournament details and player registration are now available on line at www.parnz.co.nz/ tournaments.

There was some impressive golf played and Hugh Harrison from Takapau shot a gross of 67, 3 shots clear of one of Hawkes Bay’s most accomplished golfers Stu Duff from Hastings. Winner of the nett section was Lionel Gates from the Karamu Club with a nett 65 and runner up on count-back was Rob Deam from the Napier Golf Club with a nett 66. In the teams section the Napier no. 3 team were the winners of the HB Salver with the two Waipukarau teams finishing 2nd and 3rd. The 2016 Pike Cup was won by the Hastings no. 1 team by a single point over Takapau no. 1 team and in third place was the Maraenui no.1 team. For the second year in a row Tara Raj, this talented young junior made the final of the Ladies Championship played a first time finalist in Brooke Polkinghorne. A close match where both held a lead at some stage of the first eighteen holes, Tara was four up after the morning round. After a small break for lunch the first few holes were shared but gradually Tara built up a commanding seven shot lead which was pinned back to five after the first nine holes. The consistency of Tara finally saw here take the match but both players are to be congratulated for a very good final. The Men’s final was contested by Mike Arnott, who had been had been the bridesmaid in five previous club finals and Leighton Souness. Both players had their chances and Mike was four up after the morning round. The second eighteen started evenly and Mike held a four up lead after twenty-seven holes. A turning point came on the par three twelfth hole as both missed their tee shots left and Mike made a very good par putt to go five up. The match was finished in style on the par four tenth hole where Mike made a great curling birdie putt to seal the match. In other finals Keith Slight defeated Caleb Tuck one of the club’s newer members in the Intermediate Men’s final. Two new members Neville Butler and Glen Toy fought out the Junior Championship with Neville prevailing and there was no more popular win than Joel Corney holding off John Maslin on the eighteenth hole to win the Men’s C Grade Championship. Helen Dougherty defeated Lyn Hussey in the Ladies Bronze 1 final, Prue McDowall defeated Caro Hutchins in the Bronze
2 final and Barbara Smith defeated new member Wigs Arathoon on the twentieth hole to win the Bronze 3 final. Barry Shannon the Course Superintendent is not only to be congratulated for presenting the course in great condition but also for winning the Trophy for being Top Qualifier in the Men’s Senior Club Championship. Young Bradley Wallis was the best junior nett qualifier in the same event and also won the Senior Plate final.
Pictured are Tara Raj and Mike Arnott, the winners of the Senior Ladies and Men’s Club Championships at Wanganui.
WANGANUI REGION JUNIOR OPEN
On Saturday 7th April the Wanganui Region Junior Open was held at Wanganui Golf Course (Belmont Links). This was a collaborative effort between Castlecliff Golf Course (Junior Committee) and Wanganui Golf Course (Junior Committee). The weather was turned on for the 37 Junior golfers aged from 7 through to 18 years of age, coming from as far south as Wellington through to Taumaranui. Junior Golf in Wanganui has been somewhat lacking in the last few years, having to compete with the other sports, so the organising committee were pleased with the numbers at the tournament on Saturday. The tournament consisted of 4 Divisions, Junior Men 18 holes, Junior Women 18 holes, 9 hole Handicap and 9 Hole Non Handicap, with a great standard of play on display from all divisions.

was bringing someone up from Wellington to play it. What he loved was that he could put $20 in the honesty box, get on the course easily and what a course!. Of course I agreed. Thank you to those who continue and have started to support the haggle, it does make a difference and we thank you very much. As said before it allows us to set our fees low. If talking to new members please encourage them to be involved, to join competitions and tournaments, (it all generates much needed revenue). Fantastic is the word I keep hearing about the new vinyl, doesn’t it look amazing and really makes the clubhouse look bigger. Thank you to all those that coordinated this project and to Pub Charity for the funding. Thanks to Brian Brown and Mark Dunn for laying the vinyl. We have asked that NO golf shoes are to be worn in the clubhouse and also the toilet area out behind the kitchen. If you use this toilet when playing your golf round, please take your shoes off. Thank you. Numbers on Saturday and Wednesday continue to look great. Thank you to those that bought plates along for the dinner we had last Saturday. I am sure that everyone thoroughly enjoyed the delicious meal. If you aren’t on Facebook please like us Rangitikei Golf Club, we put photos up, also up and coming events, results etc on there, so please join us.

2016 TSB BANK NELSON FESTIVAL OF GOLF PHOTOS
By Derek Drysdale, Tournament Director
This year’s tournament was moved from its previous date of October to the first week in May. What a great decision that turned out to be! The tournament was bathed in glorious Nelson sunshine from start to finish, and the competitors loved every minute of it. Golfers attended from over 30 golf clubs in New Zealand from Northland to Otago and everywhere in between. This was the third time that this event had been held, and the consensus of opinion was that it was the best one yet. The tournament benefited from a new major sponsor in the TSB Bank Ltd, a wholly owned New Zealand bank, and if they look after their customers as well as they looked after our competitors, then they are certainly a bank to consider changing to! Local Nelson Service Centre Manager Brent Williams was in attendance all week and welcomed everyone who played in the tournament. Not only that, he and the TSB Bank marketing team came up with tremendous offers to everyone playing in the event. The golf courses were in great condition, considering the dry summer we have had this year. The competitors also loved the different challenges offered by each location and the views from every course which are absolutely world class. The tournament itself was well contested and the first day team event winners were: Vicky Turner (from Omanu), Pru
