ow irritating is the following? A player replaces her ball on the green. She reads the putt from below the hole, from the side and then behind the ball. More than a minute has already elapsed. She steadies herself and then her caddy steps in directly behind the player to ensure she is aiming correctly. The player finally hits the ball and it misses the hole. Well, that was all a waste of time, you think. I am all for a player giving each shot its due consideration. I read almost every putt and I understand professional golfers need to view a putt from more than one angle. It is, afterall, their living. But the extra step of the caddy moving in to ensure the player is

When alignment is out of line

correctly aligned is most irritating. It’s so irritating that I believe it should be banned. I have no problem with a caddy pointing out where to aim — go for the TV tower at the back of the green, the second tree from the right, the guy in the red cap. But alignment should be disallowed. As far as I am concerned if a player cannot align him or herself then they shouldn’t be playing golf. What’s more does it work? To me it doesn’t. Players still miss putts just as often as normal. For some reason alignment by caddies seems to be the domain of women’s professional golf. It almost says that women golfers do not have the confidence to line themselves up.

Equally irritating is it does not happen just on the green. It’s for every shot — the tee shot, the fairway shot, the bunker shot, the chip shot. It has to be cut out. It’s also not helping with the pace of play. Some rounds in professional golf are taking nearly six hours, despite them only playing in groups of two of three. There’s another matter regarding alignment that could be banned. That’s the one where a player marks his or her ball with a straight line and then aligns the line with the direction the player believes the ball should set off on. How many times have you seen a player take nearly half a minute to align the line. After they have removed the ball marker, taken their stance, placed the putter behind the ball and, just as you think

they are about to hit the ball, they suddenly decide the line on the ball is not correctly aligned. It’s cringe time for those watching. The player has replaced the ball marker, the player is again crouched behind the ball and re-aligning the line on the ball. The line on the ball is perhaps moved no more than a millimetre to the left or right. Another half-minute passes by. It’s all very tedious. Finally the player is ready. The putt is made and it misses the hole. Well, that was a waste of time, you think. It makes me wonder if lines on balls should not be used for the purpose of alignment. I understand balls should be marked for the purpose of identification but no more than that.

The remarkable career of Thongchai Jaidee GOLF NEWS 4

T

hongchai Jaidee’s win in the French Open continued a remarkable career for a golfer who did not become a professional until he was aged 30. This is in stark contrast to the trend of today when many golfers turn pro in their teens and the average winning age on the LPGA Tour is 21. Jaidee’s win in the French Open in July made him the tournament’s oldest winner since it became part of the European Tour in 1972. Jaidee was aged 46 years and 238 days at the time of his victory. The previous oldest winner of the tournament was Miguel Angel Jimenez. He was 46 years and 180 days when he won in 2010. The main reason Jaidee did not become a professional golfer much earlier was because he was part of the military in his homeland of Thailand. He joined the Royal Thai Army in

1989 at the age of 20 and became a paratrooper. As a child he lived in a wooden house which backed onto a golf course. He originally played soccer and represented his province but was injured when a wooden skewer became embedded in his foot. During his recuperation from the injury he sneaked onto the army’s golf course behind his house, tied the discarded head of a five iron to a bamboo stick and started playing golf. The French Open win earned Jaidee 583,000 euros (nearly $NZ900,000) and took his career earnings on the European Tour to 12 million euros (more than $NZ18 million). It was his eighth win on the European Tour and he has now won on the tour for each of the last three years. His first victory on the European Tour earned him a personal audience with Thailand’s former

prime minister, who gave him a diplomatic passport to expedite his future ease of movement between countries on the European Tour. The French Open win came at Jaidee’s 11th attempt, which included a second in 2014. He was a model of consistency on the par 71 course with scores of 67, 70, 68 and 68 to finish at 11 under par. He was four shots clear of his nearest rival. “I know the golf course is fantastic,’’ Jaidee said after the win. “I’ve been here many, many years and I think especially this week, it’s a special week for me to win the tournament out here. “Sometimes you need one perfect week. You can’t do well every week. This week is my perfect week because I didn’t miss much. Anything I missed, I found I could lay up and make a good shot and make par and that’s it.’’

NEWS Stenson prevails in one of the most memorable British Opens

I

t was one of those amazing golf stories. Going into the final round of The Open Championship at Royal Troon in Scotland it was billed as Phil Mickelson versus Henrik Stenson. Stenson had the lead at 12 under par by one shot from Mickelson on 11 under par. There was gap of six shots to the next bestplaced player. But so often when such battles are headlined they often fizzle out. One falls over and it turns into a one-horse race. Or both fall over and someone emerges from the pack to snatch victory. But on this occasion it lived up to all the hype — and perhaps much more. Stenson, with his familiar pursed lips expression when he hits the ball, posted a brilliant eight-under par of 63 to win by three shots. The 63 was the lowest final round in the 145-year history of The Open. The previous lowest had been 64 when Greg Norman won in 1993. Stenson had rounds of 68, 65, 68 and 63 for a total of 264. That became the lowest total in the history of golf’s four majors. The previous lowest had been 265 registered by David Toms when he won the 2001 US PGA Championship. Mickelson did not go down without a fight. He eagled the par-five fourth hole and was five-under par through 10 holes. One hole later Mickelson shared the lead when Stenson bogeyed the par-four 11th. But this was truly Stenson’s day. He might have bogeyed two holes in the final round but at the same time he racked up an amazing 10 birdies on a course

almost every other played struggled with. It was a most deserving win in a major for Stenson. He had previously racked up four thirds and a second in majors. Stenson had won the BMW International Open in Germany just three weeks earlier and he said that provided him with the confidence that he was at the top of his game. ``I felt like this was going to be my turn,’’ Stenson said. ``It’s not something you want to run around and shout but I felt like this was going to be my turn. “It was great to get that win there (in Germany). That definitely helped this week, and I felt that extra confidence was going to be huge for me coming into this week.” Stenson achieved his Open win at the age of 40 and became the oldest first-time major winner since Darren Clarke won The Open in 2011 at age 42. Mickelson, 46, was already the winner of five majors including the 2013 Open when ironically Stenson was second. Mickelson scored a final round of six-under par 65 which in most cases would be enough to win. He was disappointed not to win but not disappointed with the way he played. “That’s probably the best I’ve played and not won,” Mickelson said. “It’s disappointing but at least I don’t have to look back and regret something I’ve done. It was a challenging day but I’m happy for Henrik. “He’s a really great champion. We’ve been friends for some time. I’ve always thought he was

one of the best ball-strikers in the game and that major championships should suit him. “I always knew he would ultimately come through and win. I’m happy that he did but disappointed he did it at my expense.” Mickelson’s second place finish marked the 11th time he had been runner-up in a major and took him past Arnold Palmer on that list but still well behind Jack Nicklaus who has 19 seconds. Stenson’s 20-under par for the tournament was the lowest in the history of The Open. The previous best was 19-under par by Tiger Woods in 2000. His winning total in relation to par of 20 under also equals the lowest in major history, set by

WIN

Jason Day at the 2015 US PGA Championship. Stenson also becomes the first man from Sweden to win a major. But it’s nothing new for Swedish woman. Swedish women have won 13 majors of which the exceptional Annika Sorenstam racked up 10. The other Swedish women major winners have been Helen Alfredsson, Liselotte Neumann and Anna Nordqvist. Stenson earned 1.3 million euros for The Open win, which is about $NZ2 million. His career earnings on the European Tour are more than 23 million euros ($NZ36 million) while his career earnings on the PGA Tour in the United States are $US24 million

($NZ34 million). That’s a total of about $NZ70 million. Those figures are tempered somewhat by the reported story Stenson lost $US8 million in a fraudulent ponzi scheme run by American financier Allen Stanford’s investment company. Stanford is now serving a prison sentence of 110 years. Stenson once said of Stanford: “I never met Stanford and it’s safe to say I wont be visiting him in prison. If I did come face-toface with him, then what I’d do to the guy could get me arrested also. I didn’t have all my eggs in his basket, but I had a lot of eggs in there and it hurt. It was a tough experience, but life has a way of setting things right.’’

Ko’s 14th win on the LPGA Tour comes in dramatic fashion I

t was called the Marathon Classic and a marathon it turned out to be. At the conclusion of the regulation 72 holes in the eastern US state of Ohio three players were tied for the lead. They were Ariya Jutanugarn, Mirim Lee and New Zealand star Lydia Ko. The trio headed out to the 18th tee for a sudden-death playoff to determine the winner of the LPGA Tour tournament. The 18th hole for the Marathon Classic was a par five and one of the trio would surely score a birdie at the first attempt, it seemed. But all three ended with pars and it was back to the 18th tee for a second

time. Once again all three scored pars. It was back to the 18th tee for a third time. Yet again all three had pars. Spectators and television viewers started asking themselves how much longer could this go? It was back to 18th tee for a fourth time and Ko finally broke the deadlock to score a birdie. Ko pumped her fist emphatically after sinking the winning putt in what was the longest playoff of the LPGA season and in the tournament’s history. Ko picked up the winner’s purse of $US225,000 and it took her career earnings on the LPGA Tour to $US7.1 million. “We all played and stuck to our game plans, and we all gave it a good run for it,” Ko said. “Our putts were so close and were not falling, and every time I said, hey, the ball is big enough for the hole – yeah, the hole is big enough for the ball. Right? Either way, it’s a long day. “Yeah, so it’s been – it was hard to just see so many putts just slip by. I said, hey, maybe she’s going to win, and then it just slipped by; maybe I’m going to win, and it slipped by. To see that putt

drop on the last hole was a cool feeling.” Ko shot a brilliant 30 on the first nine hole of the final round and built up a four-shot lead. But her two-over 39 on the back nine allowed Jutanugarn and Lee to get back in the mix. Jutanugarn’s clutch eagle on 17 was enough to get her into the second playoff of her career. “It was a really good experience, like I said,” Jutanugarn told reporters at the end of the day. “It’s really nice for me to have a chance in a playoff.” Lee’s final round 65 was the lowest of the day and allowed her to move up from tied for sixth to the top of the leaderboard. Without realising it, the South Korean had actually taken the lead going into her final hole but closed with a bogey to move back to 14-under par. Said Lee: “I didn’t know I’m in the lead. I don’t know, I just played, yeah. I didn’t think about the lead, just that I kept going, enjoyed playing.” Ko’s win was the 14th win of her career on the LPGA Tour and it made her four-for-five in playoff scenarios overall, with the only loss coming earlier this

season to world No 2 Brooke Henderson in the US PGA Championship. It was also Ko’s second win in the Marathon Classic. “Just a lot of great vibes,” Ko said. “I like Ohio. The people have been great.’’ Lydia Ko’s fellow Callaway ambassador Henrik Stenson captured his first career major championship early on Sunday in The Open Championship at Royal Troon. Ko said the two became friends after meeting one another at an outing last year and they trade congratulations messages to each other when the other one wins. “I actually met him at an outing last year, and he was so open, super nice, and actually one of the funniest guys I’ve ever met,” Ko said. “I knew either way today was going to be a great day for Team Callaway. I know Phil (Mickelson) had an amazing week, and I can’t believe he shot six-under or something and ended up losing. I saw the coverage earlier on, and Henrik Stenson, his ball-striking was just amazing.”

he PGA Tour of China has been extended to 13 tournaments for this year. The tour has been made up of 12 events since its inception in 2014 but an additional tournament for this year was announced last month. The tour is divided into two segments. The first half of the tour was conducted between May and

July with the staging of six tournaments. The second half of the tour begins at the end of this month, but instead of there being six events, there will be seven. One of the biggest attractions of the tour is that the order of merit winner gains full status on the following year’s Web.com Tour in the United States. Those that finish

EZGO partners with Windross Farm Golf Course E

NEW GOLF CLUB LAUNCHES

O

ZGO has been appointed to New Zealand’s newest Golf course. Windross Farm Golf course opens next month and is the former Manukau Golf asset. Peter Talyancich Managing Director for EZGO spoke to Golfer Pacific. “We are thrilled to add Windross Farm to the growing list of EZGO course’s in New Zealand. As well as its great location close to AKL city and Auckland Airport it’s located less than 5km’s from EZGO’s head office in Papakura. Auckland’s newest course will be spectacular and the club is hopeful there will be future opportunities to host major events and international golf tourists. 22 Golf cars have been ordered for the launch of the new golf course. “Re-signing with Windross is a testament to the longstanding relationship EZGO has had with Manukau Golf Club. The strong relationship has been

very beneficial to both parties over numerous years and it proves that often ‘you get what you pay for’. Partnering with them at the new course is exciting and positive for Windross, EZGO and NZ golf.” Stewart Halligan General Manager of the Manukau Golf Club is delighted

with the partnership MGC has developed over recent years with EZGO and this re-signing is confirmation of the strong relationship. Windross Farm Golf Course commenced 4 years ago, on land located at Alfriston, South Auckland. The course commenced when Fletcher Construc-

tion purchased the land at the Manukau Golf Course in Takanini. Golf designer Brett Thomson with assistance from Phil Tataurangi as course consultant have been instrumental in designing and shaping the new course transforming it from a flat piece of farmland to a links styled course design. Stewart Halligan says it has been a massively challenging undertaking by our club to create a sensational golf course with clubhouse and an all year round driving range with covered bays. The feedback we have received from many golfing aficionados from NZ and overseas who have visited Windross Farm has been extremely inspiring and heartening. Windross Farm will be open for play by members and member’s guests only from the 1st of September this year. »» www.ezgo.co.nz »» www.manukaugolf.co.nz

Hybrid-like sole design improves turf interaction around the green, especially on tight lies, to help eliminate stubbed or bladed chip shots.

Polymer Insert

The single layer polymer insert provides soft feel for both long and short shots around the green. Hi Def Marxman Alignment System

Two alignment stripes running the length of the club that make lining up shots easier for better accuracy. Superstroke Chipper Grip

The oversized, non-taper grip design helps stabilize the wrists and hands through impact. The longer design also allows you to put your hands in different positions to get the correct feel on a variety of shots.

Olympic format like most other golf tournaments T he format for the men’s and women’s golf events at the Olympic Games in Brazil will be like most golf tournaments. Both events will be strokeplay contests over four rounds. The winner will receive the gold medal with the silver and bronze medals going to the second and third players. If there is a tie for any of the medals there will be a three-hole playoff. The men’s competition will be first. It will be held on August 11-14 while the women’s competition is three days later on August 17-20. There will be a maximum of 60 players in each event from a total of 41 countries. Both tournaments will be held at a new course in the Barra di Tijuca area of Rio de Janeiro. New Zealand has two male and one female representatives. They are Danny Lee and Ryan Fox and the world’s No 1 woman player Lydia Ko. Ko has made it clear the Olympics is her pinnacle event of 2016. “I’m super excited to represent New Zealand, to be able to see the village, the food court and just everything — it’s going to be so cool,” Ko said. Lee has been climbing the world rankings over the past two years which put him in a great position leading into Olympic qualification. Lee is ranked 12th in the Olympic field and has a great chance to

step foot on the podium. “It’s going to be awesome and I’m sure I will make everyone proud,’’ Lee said. “It’s going to be an honour to represent my country”. Fox was just happy to make the team after a tussle with Michael Hendry to gain the second spot for New Zealand. “Obviously it’s a pinnacle sporting event and I can say I’m the third generation of my family to represent New Zealand in three different sports, so it’s a pretty cool thing to be able to do,” said Fox. One player to miss selection was Cathryn Bristow. She was nominated for selection by New Zealand Golf but was not selected by the New Zealand Olympic Committee based on not being able to demonstrate the ability to finish inside the top 16 in Rio. Bristow’s world ranking was 447.

GOLFCOMMENT

What will golf’s future be at the Olympics? By Andrew Whiley A voice from the south

I

n September of 1904, at St Louis in Missouri, a Canadian golfer won the gold medal for golf at the Olympics. His name was George Lyon. He was the winner of the individual event. There was also a team event. That was won by The Western Golf Association players from the United States. Second in the team’s event A won was The Trans-Mississippi Golf Association while third was the USGA team. As you are reading this article, you will likely be busy watching the Rio Olympics and it’s amazing athletes. Hopefully, New Zealand will be on track to win 10 gold medals with Lydia Ko winning the ladies’ golf competition and Danny Lee or Ryan Fox bringing home a medal too. But should golf really be at the Olympics? With some of the world’s best players pulling out, I wonder how many of the top 20 male players will be there? Can

they really blame the Zika virus for their withdrawal, or is this just a convenient excuse? I believe the Olympic organisers have actually failed in two aspects when it comes to golf at the Olympics. Firstly, it should be a strictly amateur-based event. Secondly, the golf course should have actively been played on over the last two years. Adam Scott was the first top player that I heard who openly admitted that maybe the Olympic organisers got it wrong with having professionals play, rather than the world’s leading amateur golfers. Scott’s comments highlighted that having amateur golfers would have been the best way to grow the game on the global stage. When you look at the schedule of the world’s greatest golf circuit, the PGA Tour, trying to accommodate the Olympics was always going to be difficult. The Olympics come in a soft period of the schedule where players would be tak-

ing a couple weeks off after the majors, before heading into the tour playoffs. I also note some of the international players that have qualified have dropped out to focus on keeping their tour card. Think about it; if Tim Wilkinson is sitting at 115 on the money list and knowing he needs to stay in the top 125 to retain his card, would he be keen to head to Rio to play? I would think he would decide to stay and focus on keeping his card for next year? Job security would come first! The Olympic golf course was finished in November of last year and a test event was held in March of this year, where the best player to play was ranked 588 in the world. The organisers had hoped to get some of the world’s best there to experience the course and to assist the organisers to gain experience in handling the logistics of hosting a major event. The delay in opening the course was due to legal issues over land ownership and envi-

ronmental issues. The course had been scheduled to open in 2014. The course designer is Gil Hanse, who really isn’t a household name in golf course architecture but has an extensive resume in renovating golf courses. I know the PGA Tour wouldn’t play a major event on a golf course that hadn’t been tested and players rarely enjoy playing a new course. The grow-in at Rio was better than anticipated but it will be interesting to see how the course does play and how quickly the course can mature. After the Olympics, the course will be handed over to be used as a public golf facility to grow the game in a country that has no golfers ranked in the top 500. Time will tell with regards to this year’s Olympics and how successful the golfing event will be. Roll on the 2020 Olympics in Japan and seeing golf continue on the list of sports. However, will it be pros or amateurs playing? One also hopes that Zika will not have spread there too.

The Swedish model is one worth looking at By Duncan Simpson New Zealand PGA Chief Executive

I

f you took a map of the world and tried to decide which countries were most likely to be fertile breeding grounds for the game of golf, Sweden probably wouldn’t be high up the list. With a climate that restricts play to around six months of the year or less, a terrain mostly unsuitable for golf courses, and a culture with a strong emphasis on social democracy and winter sports, you would expect golf to be a fringe activity at best. Yet this country, with a population around double that of New Zealand, has produced a string of world class golfers across both genders, with 22 men currently in the top 500 in the official world golf rankings. By contrast, New Zealand has five. Sweden can also lay claim to one of the greatest female golfers of all time in Annika Sörenstam, who retired at age 38 with 10 major championships and 72 LPGA victories to her credit. Our own Lydia Ko may be well on track

to eclipse that, but as Tiger Woods knows, the mountain can get steeper the closer you get to the summit. We can say we are ahead in wins by males in majors, but only just after Henrik Stenson’s stunning victory in last month’s Open Championship. The ranking numbers to build rapidly on this are certainly in Sweden’s favour. It’s not just the competitive area that Sweden is doing well in — golf is the third highest participation sport after football (soccer) and equestrian sports in their country. There is a well integrated network of golf clubs throughout Sweden, with a higher proportion of club members (as opposed to casual players) than we have here. This is probably helped by a Swedish penchant for joining clubs as a natural part of any sporting or leisure activity, but research indicates that well organised golf clubs operating to common goals and standards, backed by good development programmes for junior and beginner golfers all help to support the success Sweden enjoys in both the recreational and competitive aspects of the golf industry.

There are also a couple of X factors. Firstly, a strong “Team Sweden” approach not only amongst elite golfers, but also through club players following their heroes on the world stage. Secondly, the use of research to guide and influence industry strategy. The best example is the Swedish research into golfers’ longevity by the Karolinska Institutet which found that golfers in Sweden had a death rate 40 percent lower than other people of the same sex, age and socio economic status, meaning they lived five years longer on average. Results were even better for golfers with lower handicaps. No wonder Henrik Stenson said “Forty is the new thirty” after his triumph at Royal Troon in Scotland. The reasons given in the paper point to the physical exercise involved in playing golf, and also to the social and mental benefits associated with the game. It’s been a great surprise to me that more use hasn’t been made of this research with governments and the public at large, because the economic benefits appear obvious (or don’t governments want people to live longer?), and golf

could certainly use some positive profile to counter the negativity it tends to attract from both outside and inside the sport. The Swedes have also done excellent research into the reasons why people drop out of golf and golf club membership. A lot of it relates to frustration and a feeling that the game caters mainly for golfers of high ability, and shows clearly that the higher the handicap, the more likely a golfer will leave a club and/or give the game up. There is a clear opportunity here for using the tools we have through the NZ handicapping system, and for PGA professionals to recognise the strugglers and get them on the right track. Overall, there is much to be admired about Sweden in general, but in particular how they go about the game and business of golf in particular. You can expect to see a few more Annika Sörenstam and Henrik Stenson-like triumphs in the months and years ahead. 1 “Golf: — a game of life and death — reduced mortality in Swedish golf players’’, Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports, May 2008.

GOLFCOACHING By Anthony Barkley NZPGA Professional

rundlers, buggies, push carts or whatever you like to call them, these golfing essentials have advanced over the years making pushing your bag around the course much easier. I will refer to these as trundlers in this article. I remember when these first came out and I was playing at The Balmacewen Golf Course in Dunedin. The best part of having these trundlers is that you can let them go at the top of a hill, if they go straight! Let’s just say on one large hill I let it go and to the delight of my playing partners it took a shift to the left and ended up ploughing into a tree at full pace, and it survived. Never really went straight again but I kept using it for years. If you have an old Kean Cart pull trundler, I feel it’s time to upgrade to the modern push version. You want to make your walk around the course as easy as possible and the newer styles glide beautifully plus its easier on your body. We have actually had some go to a push trundler from the electric trundlers as they are that easy. The modern trundler comes in 3 or 4 wheel options and I think there are not too many differences in performance between these generally. Certainly the ones with larger wheels glide better, especially

100percentgolf.com

What Trundlers are best for you? when they also have large front wheels. As I said in my story above, you can let them go down hills but do watch out for large bumps (and trees) as it can turn into large mess. Costs of trundlers have gone up slightly but most are close to the prices you used to pay for the older Kean Cart in their day. Now you pay from $250-$500 for a trundler. The higher you pay generally means the better the quality. I would recommend to watch out for the models that have a wire support between the wheel legs as this in my opinion shows some form of weakness in its manufacturing. Most of the cheaper models do have these but they can break so buyers beware.

MY TOP PICS

Sun Mountain MC3

This is the new version of the Speedcart model and now has 4 larger wheels, disc break system and sleek design making it our most popular model. Its strong and has a simple break system. I have not had any models with breakages other than with the umbrella holders which I will talk about later. Its priced at the $349.00 mark but

comes with good warranties and support if you ever need. Sun Mountain also have the New Reflex trundler which folds down smaller and has sold well. Clicgear 3.5 and 8.0 Models

These have been around for a while now and are strong and sturdy. Break issues seen in the 3.0 model have been tidied up and as with the MC3 trundler we have very few breakages with the 3.5. The 8.0 model is a larger model with four wheels that still sells but with its larger price tag lags behind the 3.5. You can add plenty of accessories with these models such as handwarmers, seats etc. The 3.5 models sits at $425.00 each and the 8.0 is $500+. Clicgear also carry the Rovic trundler which is cheaper but in my opinion doesn’t match the 3.5 model for quality. Aspects to watch with both models:

Umbrella Holders: It’s recommended to not use the holders on windy days as they are prone to snap and they are not warranted by the companies as they are not designed for windy conditions. Do use them on calm sunny days as they are awesome for blocking the sun.

Bags: Both companies have matching bags for their trundlers that are top quality and Sun Mountains SYNC bags have a “V” on the bottom that fits the MC3 trundler meaning it will never roll around which can be annoying for golfers. A third brand to consider is the Flip n go models as these sit at a price point just under the MC3 and are similar in functionality. We have not seen too many issues with these models also. So these are my recommendations for push trundlers on the market today. There are loads of options out there, each having different selling points but for trundlers, if you buy cheap, you get cheap so I do recommend you spend a little more as you want your trundler to last. If you would like one of the above trundlers please contact us directly or go online to www.100percentgolf.com and make a purchase and receive a gift to sweeten the deal.

If you need Electric trundlers we sell MGi, MotoCaddy and now PowerCaddy so can give you great advice as to what suits you best and will ship FREE to you anywhere in NZ.

GOLF TRAILS

NEWS FROM AROUND THE REGIONS

NORTHLAND 31ST NORTHPINE BREAM BAY CLASSIC 2016

Despite blustery and cold conditions some elite golfers from 36 different clubs around the country managed to record some very good scores over the 54 holes. With a full field of 90 players teeing off at daybreak on Saturday 9th July, all managed to complete their first day of 36 holes before dark – but it was “touch and go”. Entering into the final round on Sunday 10th July, the leaders were: Open division – Leonard Powell (Clark’s Beach) 143, Kunaal Singh (Whitford Park) 145 and last year’s winner, Luke Brown (The Pines) 146. Masters Division – Mark Anderson (Muriwai) 149, Stuart Nicholls (Waitemata) 153 and Gavin Ashwell (Wellsford), Reg Fleet (Gulf Harbour) and Bob Shirley

(Carrington) all on 154. Ladies Division – Sam Dangen (Whangaroa) 159. Brooke Kingi (Whangaroa) and last year’s winner Waipu’s Kylie Jacoby both on 162, and Subin Wui (Pupuke) 163. Sunday’s extremely windy weather failed to dampen spirits and a good collection of spectators turned up to view the action and enjoy the club’s hospitality. The southerly wind made the sheltered deck overlooking the 18th green the preferred viewing spot. An exciting finish to the competition occurred in two divisions. The ladies had a playoff between last year’s winner Kylie Jacoby from Waipu and Samantha Dangen of Whangaroa, both on 242 over the 3 rounds, with Kylie doing the damage in defending her title. And in the Open division for the Northpine Bream Bay Classic trophy, last year’s winner Luke Brown of

The Pines took the top prize from Bailey Smith of Mt Maunganui in another sudden death playoff, both players completing their three rounds on 220. Masters Division winner Mark Anderson of Muriwai Club romped home with a total score of 223 over the three rounds. Northpine’s director, Richard Wilson presented all the top players with their winnings and of course was especially proud to be presenting the ladies trophy to his daughter Kylie.

Pictured above is Luke Brown receiving his trophies from main sponsor Richard Wilson of Northpine and tournament director Murray MacFadyen and below, the three winners: Kylie Jacoby, Mark Anderson and Luke Brown.

GREAT NORTHERN BATTLE

Northland took on North Harbour for the Great Northern Battle in testing conditions at Mangawhai Golf Club on Sunday, 42 players both each province turned out to show their skills around the challenging par 72 championship course. Players were met with fine and sunny conditions to start their day but as they were making the turn in their round, the winds picked up and rain crept over the course which made play uncomfortable for players and spectators alike. The Great Northern battle is decided by playing 18hole match play where players gain points from halving and winning holes in their match, each match is worth 18 points, the final score is then added together to find the outright winner. Amongst the 42 players competing, there was an Open Womens grade, Masters men, Senior Men and Junior boys all playing ‘off the stick’ matchplay (gross matchplay) and 4 junior girls playing handicap matchplay. North Harbour fielded some very strong teams and took the honours in all sections a part from the Senior Men’s division where Northland came out victorious 7.5 games to 2.5 games. This was the first hit out of the season for most of the Northland sides and the senior men were boosted by the inclusion of Number one and NZ Academy member Luke Brown who has recently returned from Europe, Brown eased his way back into representative golf winning his number 1 match up easily while his playing partner Christian Nitsche also made a solid start to his representative campaign taking care of his counter part showing he

has what it takes to compete at National level. Former NZ Amatuer champion, Kadin Neho slipped back into representative golf and didn’t miss a beat winning his match on the 16th. Other wins were recorded by Alex Neely, Sheldon Kearns & Scott Wightman while Julian fowler recorded the only half of the day.Pictured is Northland captain Lee Neumann accepting the trophy for their senior men’s victory with Golf Northland President Rob Pelsky.

NORTHLAND JUNIOR CLASSIC

The event was held at Sherwood Park Golf Club on the 12th and 13th of July with two boys divisions and an open girls division, we also had a 9 hole division for our purple tee players on Wednesday. In the boys division one, there was some good scoring on day one with North Harbour players Sam Yoshifuji (69) and James Hydes (71) leading the pack on the par 70 black tee course. Northland Players Christian Nitsche and Julian Fowler weren’t far back both carding rounds of 73 on the opening day, while Heochen Wang (82) and Robby Turnbull (84) were battling each other for the division two honours on day one. In the girls field, 3 time champion Brooke Kingi took an early lead carding 75 while Soktaera Sean, Soktaerodh Sean and Belinda May were all close behind each with rounds of 77 on the par 72 yellow course. With multiple players in contention across all divisions, perfect weather and the course looking immaculate the scene was set for a tight finish. In the boys division one, first round leader Sam Yoshifuji had a tougher day carding 77 to finish with a score of six over par 146, this gave Nitsche and Fowler an opening which came down to the 36th hole. After they both hit close approach shots to the final hole, Nitsche had an 8 foot birdie putt to close the door which went rolling by, leaving Fowler the opportunity to chip in for birdie to take the competition to extra holes. Fowler’s chip narrowly missed handing Nitsche the Northland Junior Title

for the first time, continuing his winning form around Northland of late. In Division two, 9 year old Robby Turnbull turned it on carding 82 off the par 71 blue tees giving him a two shot victory over Haochen Wang. The girls division began to heat up after first round leader Brooke Kingi went out in three over par in her first 9 holes and Soktaera Sean was playing nicely going out even par holding a one shot lead at the turn, the lead then stretched to 5 shots before Brooke Kingi birdied 3 of her last 4 holes leaving her and Sean tied going down the last. An untimely three putt double bogey from Sean and a tidy up and down to save par from Kingi meant the Under 23 trophy was heading back to Whangaroa for another year, stretching her winning streak to 4 years in a row. In the purple tee division, Rafe Fleming Bone showed some nice touch carding 46 to take first place while Aaron Halaapiapi won the 9 hole nett, Other players Sam Hewson, Teneille Hiki, and Jack Hay all showed promise which we hope continues in years to come. Pictured is Chairman of Golf Northland John Smith with winners Brooke Kingi and Christian Nitsche.

NORTHLAND TRIAL STANDINGS

Northland number one Luke Brown has made his first appearance at a trial this year after travelling to Europe, testing his skills at the Scottish Amateur, British Amateur, Welsh Amateur and St Andrews Links tournaments. Brown made up for lost time collecting all 500 points on offer after a satisfying win in a playoff to defend his title at the Bream Bay Classic, held at Waipu golf club. Not to be outdone was Scott Wilson who took out the honours of being the leading Masters player in the tournament, giving him maximum points to start his campaign. The next trials are the Busby matchplay tournament and the

North Island Amateur.

NORTH HARBOUR NOTICEBOARD

NORTH HARBOUR NORTH HARBOUR GOLFERS BETTER THEIR NORTHERN NEIGHBOURS

North Harbour representative golfers have won the great northern battle against Northland on Sunday 17th of July in Mangawhai taking home five of the six trophies up for grabs. The open grade women won 9.5/2.5, the junior boys U16’s, U19’s and junior girls all were flawless in 4-0 wins. The Masters (Over 40) men continued their strong run of form with a convincing 7.5/0.5 victory. It was not all North Harbour Golf’s way however as Northland open grade men defeated a very strong Harbour line up to take the Double North Cup by a margin of 7.5/2.5. Overall the great Northern Battle final result would be claimed by Harbour by very convincing score of 426.5 to 330.5. Matches were played in great spirit and a big thank you to the magnificent Mangawhai golf club for hosting both districts. The top golfers in the district now set their sights on the formidable Bay of Plenty teams who will compete against North Harbour at the North Shore Golf Club over the 20th/21st of August.

AUCKLAND VOKE MAKES EISENHOWER TROPHY TEAM

Nick Voke’s golfing stature continues to rise with selection in this year’s New Zealand team to compete for the Eisenhower Trophy in the biennial World Amateur Team Championships to be hosted by Mexico. The El Camaleón Golf Club at the Fairmont Mayakoba and the Iberostar Playa Paraiso Golf Club courses will be used for the championships, 21-24 September. Voke will be joined by Luke Toomey (Waikato) and Ryan Chisnall (Tasman) in the New Zealand team. The three will look to follow in the footsteps of Michael Campbell, Phil Tataurangi, Grant Moorhead and Stephen Scahill who famously won the Eisenhower Trophy in Canada in 1992. All three players have valuable experience on the international stage with Voke having played College golf at Iowa State University in America since 2013 where he has recorded sensational results including three victories and 15 top 10’s to make him a vital member of the side. The Eisenhower Trophy is a stroke play event where the best two scores from three players count toward the team’s score for each round.

On Monday 14th June, the Counties Manukau Veterans golfers played the first finals round in bright winter sunshine at the superb Pukekohe Golf Club. A total of 100 players played some excellent inter-club team pennants golf. Huntly who dominated the qualifying rounds maintained their form to win the SHIELD division with 137 points, while Pakuranga moved from last to first in the PLATE division with a 125 point win, five ahead of Pukekohe in second place. Pukekohe Vets had their hands full running the tournament, playing in the Plate division and defending the CHALLENGE CUP against a quality team from Hauraki. Needless to say their home course advantage saw a successful Cup defence win 39.5 to 32.5. Pukekohe’s Murray Glasgow was in marvellous form winning his match 11.5 to 6.5 and scoring an equal best of the day 38 points. It was Clarks Beach’s Terry Tapp however who was presented with the CLARET Jacket as best player of the day. Playing off a 10 handicap Terry shot a solid 79 gross score for 38 points and helped Clarks to second place in the Shield Competition, just one point behind Huntly and two ahead of Maramarua in third place. The event which is part of the Waikato Veterans Golfers Association’s annual programme, was once again generously sponsored by Westpac Bank. In spite of a period of uncertain weather leading up to the day, the course and greens were in good condition, the rainclouds stayed away and the tournament organization was of a high standard. Even those who did not manage to collect an envelope from the prize table, expressed a willingness to return next year with Westpac already having offered to renew its sponsorship for the day. The competition was based on best

WAIKATO AGE GROUP CHAMPIONSHIPS

There was an exciting end to the 2016 Waikato Age Group Championships at Cambridge Golf Club last month. A 2 man playoff between Willy Eady and Kevin Koong was needed to find a winner of the 2016 Under 19 Boys Division after both players finished their 27 holes five under par. The players were sent down the 1st hole in the sudden death playoff, in which both hit their tee shots down the middle of the fairway, Koong was first with his approach hitting it to approximately 20foot to a back right flag position. Eady then trumped Koong by hitting it to 8 feet.

Koong’s birdie attempt slid by on the low side, which left Eady with an opportunity to wrap it up on the first play-off hole. An opportunity that he took advantage of -slotting his down-hill putt and taking out the 2016 Waikato Age Group Championship. New Zealand representative Alanna Campbell played her way to victory with a solid performance posting a total score of 1 under par for the 27 hole event. Alanna finished 6 shots clear of local player Zeta Syme (113) and Bay of Plenty representative Jode Ngaheu (113). In the under 16 Boys Division Jake Lee proved he enjoys the Cambridge track after winning the Under 14 Boys in 2015 he backed it up by winning the Under 16 Boys Division in 2016. Jake had scores of 76 and 33 to finish 1 over par and clinch victory by 4 shots over Nathan Mayes (113) and Cameron Harlock (114). Five girls battled it out for the trophy in the Under 16 Girls Division, and local Cambridge golfer Ella Cockburn came out on top. Ella had scores of 84 and 39 to win the Under 16 Girls by two shots over Hamilton player Zoann Huang. It was great to see an increase in Under 14 Players in this year’s event, 18 Boys took to the fairways with Springfield player Hoje Kang coming out on top. Hoje had scores of 78 and 36 for a total (114), and three shots clear of Jaewoo Son on 117. The Under 14 Girls Division, like the Under 19 Boys, had an exciting conclusion, after a three way playoff which went to the second extra hole.

Silvia Brunotti, Subin Wui, and Darae Chung all finished with totals of 118 for their 27 holes. The girls were taken down to the 18th tee for a sudden death playoff, all three players hit the green with their approach shots on the first playoff hole with Brunotti coming closest to birdie, her putt up the hill from 20feet slammed in to the back of the cup and jumped out the other side. All players had tap in pars and went back to the tee. Silvia and Subin both hit their tee shots down the middle, with Darae finding the left hand trees. After Silvia hit her approach long left and Subin missed the green pin high right, it was up to Darae to see if she could find some magic from the trees. Darae punched out just short of the green. After hitting her 3rd shot to 4 feet, it put the pressure on Silvia and Subin, both players chipped on and missed their putts leaving Darae the chance for the win with an uphill putt which she rolled in the middle. A nerve raking end to the event for the girls but an exciting one all the same. Darae Chung from Shandon Golf Club took out the event, with Subin 2nd on countback and Silvia 3rd.

SCHOOL HOLIDAYS SERIES ROUND 2

The second round of the School Holiday Series played last month in conjunction with the Hamilton Golf Club Junior Open was a great success. The winners of the Boys 1st Division (Tyler Wood) Boys 2nd Division (Kahn Johnson) and the Girls Division (Zoann Huang). Congratulations!! We look forward to the final round on October 6th at the Te Awamutu Golf Club. In the overall standings, Riverside’s Josh Beattie has made his way to the top with two consistent performances. Josh is sitting on 140 points and leads the series by 10 points over Hamilton Golf Club players Seiga Ikemura (130) and Sam Brinkworth (110points).

EAGLES VISIT MOUNT MAUNGANUI GOLF CLUB

An excellent field of 78 players supported the annual visit by the Eagles to the Mount Maunganui Golf Club on Sunday 17th July 2016.78 players competed – made up of 14 Eagles pairs and 25 Mount Golf Club pairs. Eagles visitors were from Te Puke, Waihi, Lake View and the Mount Golf Clubs. Thank you to the women Club members who joined in and partnered the some of the Eagle players. Played as Foursomes on a course in very good condition BUT the weather the players had to contend with included cold strong gusting winds, showers and one particular blizzard like squall. Not comfortable. Scoring was good taking into account the conditions. The leading score was posted by an Eagles pairing of Philippa Mc Knight 68.5 net followed by a Mount Club pairing of Pam Adlam & Ray Horsfall 70 net then by Laurel & Mike Flattery 70.2 net. Pleasing to see the clubhouse full on a Sunday with players enjoying the comfort, the services available and the camaraderie that is associated with this event. A great effort by the Eagles organiser, John Uden, who through various means, managed to gather a good entry level from the Mount Maunganui Golf Club members to support and enjoy the Mixed Golf event – The Eagles Visit. OMOKOROA SOCIAL GOLFERS

Following recent interclub success against Whangamata and also Mount Maunganui, the Omokoroa social golfers took on Te Puke, Otumoetai, Omanu, Mount Maunganui and Tauranga in the I’Anson trophy on Sunday 19th June. The day was pleasantly dry and the course in great condition after a sunny week. The southerly breeze kept the players cool for the first nine holes, but the weather steadily improved as the day progressed. There was a full field of 120 players, with 2015 winners Otumoetai back to defend the trophy. The scoring was close, particularly in the Mens section where Omokoroa were tied for first place with Otumoetai on 316 points. In the Ladies section Omokoroa were able to pull ahead finishing with 313 points, ahead of the Mount who were second on 282. Overall, Omokoroa were victorious by a fairly clear margin, winning the trophy for the first time since 2011. The victorious team are pictured below with the trophy.

Grateful thanks to the many helpers who assisted in running the competition so smoothly.

TARANAKI TIMING OF TARANAKI GOLF OPEN SEEN AS POSITIVE Story Taranaki Daily News

The Taranaki Open will now be the first Charles Tour event of the 2016/17 season following a scheduling clash with the Carrus Open. Traditionally played in September at Tauranga Golf Club, the Carrus Open has been moved to April, as the initial date clashed with an Australian PGA event which would have seen a number of leading New Zealand professionals unavailable. The change now means the Taranaki Open will be played between September 29 and October 2. It will be the only Charles Tour event held in the North Island before Christmas. The change could prove to be a bonus for New Plymouth Golf Club who hosts the Taranaki Open, with New Zealand professionals eager to get their season underway after the winter break. Added to this, New Plymouth will also host the Toro Men’s Interprovincial in late November and can expect interest from some leading amateurs to play in this year’s Open as part of their lead up to the Interprovincial. These two factors could see one of the largest fields for the Taranaki Open in recent years. ❑The June round of the Senior Invitational Pennant at Fitzroy was played in difficult conditions, with squally showers and ever strengthening north-westerly wind hampering the players throughout the day. Play had barely started when a 15 minute downpour left many of the greens underwater. A decision was made to delay play until 10am to give the water on the greens time to subside. Unfortunately, one team made the premature decision to leave assuming play would be abandoned for the day. The Golf Zone Gators loss was the Revital Fertiliser Coasters gain with the Coasters gaining the maximum 9-0 win by default.

Tournament and is seeking teams of five, hole sponsors and donations of goods to auction. Proceeds will go towards a $10,000 portable patient hoist for Hospice Taranaki. “I was keen to raise money for the hospice because we’ve been beneficiaries of the wonderful, compassionate service they provide,” tournament conveyor Murray Gillespie said. His wife, Alison, died about five months ago. “It prompted me to suggest to the club that the hospice should be a good organisation to raise money for and they agreed.” It costs $250 per team to enter, and there must be a non-golfer in the ranks for the competition, which will be held at New Plymouth Golf Club. Entry includes a light lunch from 11am, with a shotgun start at noon and teams compete for the Russell Moore Memorial Trophy. “That’s in honour of one of our former club members. He was a keen golfer and a member at New Plymouth. His wife Jennie is also a member at our club.” Organisers of the event are looking for businesses to sponsor each of the 18 holes for $500 each, which includes team entry. They also need donations of goods for an auction held on the day. Taranaki Hospice spokeswoman Rose Whitaker said they’ve already bought the hoist, which has gone directly to supporting a patient with mobility issues in his own home. “A hoist provided him with a huge amount of independence and quality of life. We can move him to his bed, to a chair, to the toilet, to the shower.” Whitaker said she was thrilled to be the recipient of funds raised and empathised with Gillespie’s passion for the hospice. “It’s the way the whole club have taken it on board. We’ve had visits from the district governor. It’s not something that they’re passively doing, it’s something they’re fully into. That’s really exciting.” For more information about the event ring Murray Gillespie on 027 924 4281 or Des Friedrich on 021 503 551.

The Hawkes Bay V Wellington Interprovincial was held on 2-3 July 2016. A late start due to frost was the only glitch on a weekend that provided a great contest between the two provinces. PLAY GOLF AT ARIKIKAPAKAPA

Finishing in near dark Williams holed a 6 ft birdie put on the last (9th) to win the match after Dan missed a put to halve. The pair produced 14 birdies in their match which alone showed the quality of the two players. ( Allen Forrest put this win down to Dallas caddie ) A fantastic meal was provided for all the players at the Napier clubhouse after the days play. Sunday provided more of the same. With a promising start the bay team were up early in most matches and the same through the turn. A couple of early wins 4/3 to both Ben Swinburne and Adam Winter saw the Bay hold an early advantage. Carlos Tawera chipped in with another win but the remainder were in the balance. A huge birdie bomb ended Russell Mitchells charge on 17 while both Tyson Tawera and Josh Desant had birdies layed on them on the 18 to see two possible wins turned to a loss and a half. Final Result 9.5-6.5 to Wellington. Steffan Hepburn

Pongaroa beat Hastings 7-5 which took them a long way towards winning but impressively, Pongaroa were down 6-2 to Karamu before Sundays play but managed to win all four games to get the half and secure the overall win. The course was in great order, the greens especially so a big congratulations to the sole green keeper with Dannevirke and the voluntary members who worked hard to get the course presented like it was. Dannevirke were wonderful hosts and lunch and after golf food were all delicious. The Golf Association extends its gratitude to Dannevirke for the effort put in to make it great for all those who competed. To the referees who came down and officiated over the event, a big thank you and finally to Allan Forrest and Russell Burns who ran the event for the Golf Association, thank you as well.

Pictured are the winning Pongaroa team who won the Cup, a cup they wouldn’t give up after the prize giving as it was on its way to be filled up at their local hotel, but hopefully we’ll see it back again soon. A big congratulations to Pongaroa for winning the Cup and of course to the other finalists as well; Hastings, Karamu and Wairoa who all travelled, stayed over and boosted the economy of Dannevirke in the process! MANAWATU WANGANUI SILVER AND DISTRICT PENNANT CHAMPIONS

The final round of the Women’s Silver and District pennants was played in late June at Rangitikei Golf Club. The Metservice weather forecast looked a little grim heading into the day, however thankfully Rangitikei turned it on with a dry day overhead. It may have been a little cold, but the the warm wood fire greeted players as they returned to the clubhouse. The District pennant competition section winners had already been decided with Rangatira taking out section one and receiving the Jean Whitehead Shield, and Marton taking out section two to win the Bessie Fullerton-Smith Shield. However the final round saw teams playing matches against teams with the same placing in the other division to determine final placing heading into next years combined, one division only competition. All eyes were on the top match between Rangatira and Marton for the Womens District Assn Shield. This was won by Marton. The Silver pennant competition was a nail biter to the end, partly due to Eketahuna defaulting to Rangatira, whom were second and obtained the maximum points, putting them on 17 points, the same as Marton heading into the round. So Marton had to win or at least draw against Manawatu. The Manawatu ladies tried their best to upset proceedings, but had to settle with a draw with Marton,

Taihape Golf Club can tick off another district club title, after winning the President’s Trophy final in June. The men’s President’s trophy competition is a district wide interclub event, with 19 club teams taking part in handicap match play competition. The round robin is played in 4 sections with most clubs getting 2 home matches and 2 away

matches, before deciding the quarter finalists. Eight quickly become 4, and then finally 2 teams are left to compete in the final. This year’s final had Taihape playing Apiti in the final played at Rangitikei. Taihape won the match 6.5 – 3.5.

CHAMPIONSHIP & WEEKEND PENNANT WINNERS

The final rounds of the women’s Championship and Weekend Pennant competitions were played in June at Foxton Golf Club. The Championship Wanganui team of Tara Raj and Carron Thompson defeated the experienced Rangatira team members of Jill Hall and Lesley Leary to complete a very good year to remain unbeaten as a team – only the Manawatu pairing of Tania Hook and Rebecca Hoopper managed a draw against them in round 9. In second place was Marton, followed by Manawatu in third. The Weekend Pennant competition played off handicap was again won by Rangatira, narrowly over Manawatu in second and Castlecliff in third. Going into the last round Manawatu actually held the lead. The Rangatira pairing of Jo Alabaster and Melanie Walshe, defeated the Rangitikei team 4 – 1, in 3 close matches, to give them a chance at the title if Manawatu slipped. Unfortunately for Manawatu their pairing of Eva Heinrich and Lily Griffin, whom had done so well through most of the competition, lost 4 – 1 against Pahiatua’s Lindy Wheeler and Sally Dryland, allowing Rangatira to overtake them at the top. Well done to all players that took part in the 2016 competitions. Pictured left is Wanganui team of Carron Thompson & Tara Raj. Pictured top right are Rangatira’s Jo Alabaster and Melanie Walshe.

WELLINGTON SHANDON’S DARAE CHUNG WINS U14 WAIKATO AGE GROUP CHAMPIONSHIP

Darae Chung (Shandon member, and Wellington representative), was competing in the Waikato Age Group championship last month.. After 27 holes of competition, she had a share of the lead for the U14 division. In a situation reminiscent of Lydia Ko at the Marathon Classic, Darae was tied with 2 other girls, and was required to go into a playoff situation. Silvia Brunotti, Subin Wui, and Darae Chung all finished with totals of 118 for their 27 holes. The girls were taken down to the 18th Tee for a sudden death playoff. All three players hit the green with their approach shots on the first playoff hole, with Brunotti coming closest to birdie – her putt up the hill from 20 feet slammed into the back of the cup and jumped out

the other side. All players had tap in pars and went back to the tee. Silvia and Subin both hit their tee shots down the middle, with Darae finding the left hand trees. After Silvia hit her approach shot long left and Subin missed the green pin high right, it was up to Darae to see if she could find some magic from the trees. Darae punched out just short of the green. After hitting her 3rd shot to 4 feet, it put pressure on Silvia and Subin. Both players chipped on and missed their putts, leaving Darae the chance for the win with an uphill putt – which she rolled in the middle. A nerve raking end to the event for the girls, but an exciting one all the same. Darae Chung from Shandon Golf Club (Wellington) took out the event, with Subin 2nd on countback and Silvia 3rd.

Pictured is Darae – 1st in U14 and 3rd overall.

CANTERBURY

ASHBY BERGH & MCGUIRE HENDON TROPHIES HEAD SOUTH

The Annual Ashby Bergh and McGuire Hendon Trophy fixtures were played at Tai Tapu in cool conditions with the course in excellent condition on Sunday July 17 where across town supremacy was at stake. In the Ashby Bergh Trophy fixture Lincoln North, the winner of Canterbury Central Patterson Cup played Pegasus Red, the Canterbury North Temple-

ton Cup winners in a very competitive match with both teams locked together at the end of 18 holes 4-4. Both Team Captains were drawn to play in a sudden death play-off with Lincoln team of, from left Scott Fairweather, Cameron Harker, Kevin Logan, Steve Harrold, Gary Shirley, Geoff Baldwin, Jon Berry and Darryl Moore (c) with the trophy, winning at the second play-off hole against a gallant Pegasus side of Richard Nortje, Jason Gwatkin, Daniel Dwyer, Grant Townley, Gary May (c), Darrell Hansen, Douglas Spencer and Peter Doak. The McGuire Hendon Trophy saw the runner-up of Canterbury Central Patterson Cup, Weedons Red matched against Amberley Gold, the runner-up of the Canterbury North Templeton Cup. Weedons team of Ryan Barham, Chris Hay, Alan Fibbes, Martin Bogue, Ian Shaw, Ian Knowler, Terry Sullivan and Tony Fitzgerald eventually proved too strong for Amberley’s Greg Mills, Rowan Turnbull, Stephen Hartley, Graham Demmocks, Rex Kerr, Hayden Kent, Aaron Eddy and Bob McLeary winning 5-3.

match at the 18th for a commanding 7-2 victory. The Canterbury North Juniors lost their morning foursomes 1.5-.5 with Taylor Willis / Tom McLorinan halving their match and Dallas Wilson / Mitchell Berry being defeated 3/2. The afternoon singles were also close affairs with wins to Wilson 4/3, Willis 1 up, Berry halving and McLorinan being defeated 2/1 to square the fixture 3-3. The Canterbury North Intermediates won their foursomes 2.5-1.5 with team pairings Tim Dunbar / Bruce Hutchison and Jamie Joseph / Leigh Adams winning 3/2 and 2/1 respectively, while Ken McFarlane / Karl Rollinson halved and Paul Neilson / Mike Clapham were defeated 3/2. Marlborough were too strong in the afternoon singles with Hutchison recording the only win 6/4, Dunbar and Clapham halving and McFarlane, Rollinson, Neilson, Joseph and Adams losing their matches, Marlborough winning 7.5-4.5 overall.

CHILLY CONDITIONS FOR CANTERBURY JUNIOR TOURNAMENT

A southerly blast caused challenging conditions for the Canterbury Junior Tournament held at the Avondale Golf Club in July. 36 golfers braved the cold conditions with some great scoring from the junior golfers. Tiaki Ogilvie (Russley) continued his great run of form after winning the Eagles Tournament last week he shot a three under par 67 to win the overall tournament from Hayato Miya (Russley) on 71. The Girls section was won by Juliana Hung (Russley) who shot 77 from Lina Park (Waimairi Beach) on 84 with Amy Weng (Russley) winning the net with 77 on a countback from Deanna Matthews (Weedons). The Grade Two Boys section was won by Nathan Hall (Weedons) with a net 66 from Hugo Reid (Everglades) on a countback with a net 70. The best stableford was Taylor Holland (Lincoln) with 36 points from William Robb (Templeton) with 35 points.

CANTERBURY NORTH FINISH STRONGLY IN MARLBOROUGH REP FIXTURE

Kaikoura Golf Club hosted the annual Marlborough vs Canterbury North representative fixture on Sunday July 10 in fine, cool conditions. Honours were shared in the morning foursomes with the Senior team pairings of Matt Adam / Austin Hamilton and Oscar Cadenhead / Ryan Adams winning their foursome matches 6/4 and 3/2 respectively with Tim Chambers / Jamie Mead and Andrew Green / Richard Sinclair being defeated 4/3 and 3/1 respectively. The afternoon senior singles belonged to Canterbury North with wins to Mead 1 up, Sinclair 3/2, Matt Adam 7/6, Oscar Cadenhead 1 up, courtesy of a 360 degree lap of honour putt on the final hole and Ryan Adams halving for a 6.5-5.5 winning margin. The Canterbury North Masters team won their morning foursomes 2-1 with Mike Taylor / Peter McAllister winning 3/2 while Marcus Mariu / Jason Sincock won 2 up. CANTERBURY PLAYERS COMPETING IN AMERICA

A number of Canterbury players have made the trip to America to compete in age group based tournaments including the IMG World Junior Championship. Dominic Brettkelly and Hiroki Miya (both Russley) had their first tournament experience at the FCG International played at the Sycuan Resort, both had to adapt quickly to the hot and humid conditions as well as recovering from jet lag. Marcel Boet (Christchurch) also played the event returning to America again to gain this experience which he has done for the past few years. Hiroki had a solid tournament finishing tied for 10th place with rounds of 74, 71 and 68, unfortunately Dominic and Marcel narrowly missed the cut which saw the top 25% of the field progress to the final round. The focus is now on the IMG World Junior Championships being played at Torrey Pines 12-15 July. There is a large contingent from Canterbury playing in this event across the age categories. Amelia Garvey (Kaiapoi) 15-17yrs Girls Ethan Lam (Everglades) 7-8yrs Boys Hayden Lam (Russley) 9-10yrs Boys Seb May (Russley) 9-10yrs Boys Zach May (Russley) 13-14 yrs Boys Dominic Brettkelly (Hororata) 15-17yrs Boys Hiroki Miya (Russley) 15-17yrs Boys Tom Parker (Russley) 15-17yrs Boys Amelia Garvey, Ethan Lam, Hayden Lam, Seb May, Zach May, Tom Parker along with 7 year old Cooper Moore are then playing the World Stars tournament in Las Vegas

SBS INVITATIONAL RESCHEDULED TO MARCH 2017

The Otago men’s team will not have the opportunity to defend the SBS Invitational title after this year’s event, which was to be played on November 12-13, was cancelled last month. A lack of support from several of the

larger provinces has led to the decision. The organisers are planning to reschedule the event for March next year. The event has been under a cloud since being moved from March to December, leaving the team’s strokeplay event less than a month before the national interprovincial match play event. This year’s event would have been the 40th anniversary of the successful tournament which began in March 1977 and has continued annually since. Golf Southland spokesman and Jack’s Point Golf Director John Griffin is pleased the event will return to its traditional dates. “It has been very successful before the change and the course is in pristine condition early in the year,” Griffin said. “We have gone back to all of the provinces with the new date and we have provided increased travel allowances for competing teams. “We are putting $25,000 up to assist with team’s travel as well as providing $5,000 in prize vouchers. Golf Southland expects to confirm if the March event will go ahead when it gets feedback from the provinces. “We expect to confirm the event by the end of this month but it is important that the larger provinces support the event to ensure its future.” Last November, the Otago men’s quintet won the title by an impressive 28 shots and the team is keen to compete once again. It would be a travesty if the provinces do not support the tournament which injects more than $30,000 of sponsorship into New Zealand amateur golf.

OTAGO COURSES FEATURE IN TOP 40

Otago has a plethora of highly-rated golf courses with eight of the province’s courses being rated in New Zealand’s top 40 in a list printed in the July edition of the Australian Golf Digest. A panel of 22 professionals, amateurs and administrators judged New Zealand courses, rating them on risk and reward, difficulty and fairness, variety of design, memorability, scenic features, course condition and ambience and atmosphere. An hour north of Auckland, Tara Iti opened last October and immediately went to No1, two ahead of another Tom

Doak-designed course in Cape Kidnappers. Most of the leading picks are resort courses – Jacks Point is rated No2, The Hills No6 and Millbrook No8. The remaining five Otago rated layouts are all historical club courses with Arrowtown No13. With its scenic features, Arrowtown featured highly as well as being in consistently good course condition. The Otago Golf Club is one of the oldest in the southern hemisphere but came in next at No26. Its history and tradition provide a unique atmosphere and the course is always in pristine condition. Balmacewen rates highly on memorability with the renowned Glen hole featuring in many books on golf holes. Chisholm Links, the venue of this year’s masters (over-40) interprovincial, is No36 while Cromwell and Kelvin Heights are at No38 and No39 respectively.

ST CLAIR WEEKEND WOMEN WINNERS OF METRO PENNANTS FOR 2016

A playoff match between the St Clair Weekend and the Taieri Lakes Midweek Pennant Teams was played at the Otago Golf Club on Sunday 3 July in fine conditions. Unlike the round robin matches where only 4 players were required, todays

NATIONAL LEFT HANDER’S TOURNAMENTS

playoff match stipulated that 6 players make up a team. After 9 holes, the St Clair team of Judy Bevin, Sharon Keith, Jocelyn Livesey, Chris Chambers, June Cardoza and Raewyn Ross, were leading in 4 of the 6 matches and this trend continued to the end, with St Clair beating the Taieri team. This match was a replay of the playoff played in 2014 but that result went Taieri’s way. St Clair Weekend will now go forward representing Metro at the Otago District Pennant Final to be played in August. The results of the metro section women’s pennant final played at the Otago Golf Course on Sunday 3 July 2016 were: (St Clair names first) Judy Bevin beat Liz Watt 2 up Sharon Keith beat Janet Hobbs 4/3 Jocelyn Livesey beat Patsy Williams 5/4 Chris Chambers beat Cindy Gatenby 5/4 June Cardoza and Dawn Hyslop all square Raewyn Ross beat Maree Hendry 3/2 Pictured are the St Clair Womens Team (L-R) Jocelyn Livesey, Raewyn Ross, Chris Chambers, Judy Bevin, Sharon Keith, June Cardoza.
