eclining membership numbers. Increasing average age of members. Those are two factors that will be very familiar to anyone involved with the management of a golf club. And I mean any golf club, anywhere in the world. There will, of course, be exceptions. But that’s all they will be, exceptions. A perfect example is the United States. About 12 years ago there were 30 million players. Last year it had dropped to 24 million, a decrease of 20 percent. Another good example is Aus-

tralia. About 10 years ago Australia had 500,000 players. Last year there were 400,000 players, again a drop of 20 percent. Golf retailers have suffered accordingly. The pro shop at the local golf club is nothing like it was 20 years ago. Most pro shops carry just the basics with little emphasis on golf hardware, such as clubs. Even the big guys have suffered. Last month the world’s largest dedicated golf retailer Golfsmith filed for bankruptcy in the United States. Analysts said Golfsmith stores were too big and there were too many of them. It had 109 stores in the United States and 53 in Canada. It employed 2300 peo-

ple. What has happened with Golfsmith is probably what is happening with golf clubs. Many golf clubs in New Zealand don’t have the membership numbers of 10 or so years ago. Those same clubs may have borrowed money for extensions or developments based on those membership numbers. Now the membership numbers are less, it is much harder to service those debts. I am not about to provide the answers to such situations. I don’t know any answers other than the strong will survive and the weak will not. And strong doesn’t mean the biggest, as in the case of

Golfsmith. The fall is only harder for the biggest. The average age of a club member in New Zealand is about 60 from memory. The younger people are simply not joining clubs like they used to. This is just a sign of the times. They are still playing but can’t justify the commitment of an annual subscription fee, even if it is broken down into monthly payments. I know some people who used to have membership of a golf club as part of their salary package. Can you imagine that happening today? It is just a sign of the times.

Daniel Hillier charges from the back to win NZ Under-19 GOLF NEWS 4

D

aniel Hillier went into the final round of the New Zealand Under-19 Championship in Nelson six shots from the lead and virtually out of discussion as a contender. But like a horse race at Trentham the leaders found the home straight a long one and charging from the back was Hillier. At the finish there was no need for a photo with Hillier winning by two shots. He had the equal best score of the final round with a brilliant five-under 66. Sharing the equal best final round was Jake Meenhorst from Auckland who got up to share second with Charlie Smail from Waikato. Most of the fireworks from Hillier came in the last seven holes. One of them was a fizzer with a bogey on the 17th but another four of them were birdies. Hillier, from Manor Park Golf Sanctuary in Wellington, said he knew he would need to produce something special in the last round to give himself a winning chance. “I was feeling pretty good about my game going into the tournament,’’ Hillier recalled. “At the start of the (final) day I knew there was a big chase up ahead and I

had to go pretty low to give myself a shot. “I went out with an attacking mindset and it was one of those days when it pays off. Sometimes it doesn’t. “I didn’t think it would pan out the

way it did but I’m just really honoured to come away with the title again.” Hillier, 18, had won the same tournament the previous year when it was held at Shandon in Wellington and the latest victory continued an outstand-

ing year and a half. In that time he had become the youngest male to win on New Zealand’s Charles Tour when beating the professionals at the age of 17 in the Harewood Open in Christchurch last October. Five months earlier he had won the New Zealand Amateur Championship in Auckland and more recently he won the Australian Boys’ Amateur Championship for under-18s in Tasmania in April. The Tasmanian win gained him a start in the Australian Open at the Royal Sydney Golf Cub from November 17-20 and Hillier is very much looking forward to it. “They’ve announced that Jason Day, Adam Scott and Jordan Spieth will all be there so it’ll be nice to hopefully meet a couple of them,’’ he said. “If I’m extremely lucky, maybe I’ll get a practice round with one of them.” But for the meantime to win consecutive under-19 national titles was a proud moment. “It’s awesome to be in the winner’s circle once again and my year seems to keep getting better,” he said. “To win and then defend this championship is something I will never forget, so it’s a pretty special day for me.”

Playoff required to decide women’s winner T here was a dramatic finish to the women’s division of the New Zealand Under-19 Championship with Focus Jonglikit (pictured) of Waikato prevailing. Following the three rounds of regulation play at the Nelson Golf Club there was a tie for the lead between Jonglikit and Hillary O’Conner of Christchurch. A playoff was required to find a winner and it took two holes before the deadlock was broken with Jonglikit holing a 15-foot putt for victory. Jonglikit started the final round two shots off the lead. She went through the first nine holes with eight pars and a bogey but turned up the heat on the second nine. She racked up four

birdies and five pars for a final round of three-under par 70. Jonglikit and O’Conner finished the regulation three rounds at eight under par.

Jonglikit, from the Riverside Golf Club, had scores of 69, 72 and 70 while O’Conner (Russley) had 69, 70 and 72.

Good to see you, Michael GOLF NEWS

M

ichael Campbell is making a comeback. It won’t be in the open ranks against the likes of Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy or Jason Day — unless something dramatic occurs. Instead it will be the seniors’ tour for players aged at least 50. Campbell confirmed his intention in a surprise visit to New Zealand last month. He is already marking down the time to when he turns 50 in February of 2019. There were no maybes, no hopefuls. It was a case of will do. Campbell has not played in recent years. He lost form and the difficulties that come with divorce proceedings were hardly the platform from which to get his game back on track. Instead he has turned his hand to golf coaching. Campbell now operates a golf academy in Spain and said all was going well. He had recently increased his staff from six to eight. He’s even learned to speak a little Spanish. “Dos cervezas por favor,’’ Campbell offers as an example. The translation is no surprise. It means two beers, please. Campbell returned to New Zealand mainly as a surprise guest for his father’s birthday in Wellington. But his

presence in the country was quickly swooped on. He ended up giving advice to the New Zealand’s Eisenhower team which happened to be in Wellington at the same time. Campbell, of course, was part of New Zealand’s winning Eisenhower team in Canada in 1992 along with Grant Moorhead, Phil Tataurangi and Stephen Scahill. And just to underline his seriousness about a return to golf he had a lesson. Yes, you read correctly. Campbell, after spending time with the Eisenhower team at the Royal Wellington Golf Club, popped down the road to the driving range at Silverstream for a lesson with Matthew Lane. Matthew will tell you Michael made the trip from Spain especially for the lesson and the fact that Michael’s father was having a birthday at the same time was merely coincidence. But the two together rekindled memories of a golden era in New Zealand golf. Lane and Campbell are both New Zealand Open winners and were part of a streak of five successive wins by New Zealanders in our national open. For the record they were Michael Long (1996), Greg Turner (1997), Lane (1998), Campbell (2000) and David

Michael Campbell (right) poses with Manor Park coaching Bruce Farmer upon his first visit to the club for about 20 years.

Smail (2001). There was no tournament in 1999. Earlier in Campbell’s day around Wellington he called into his old stomping ground of Manor Park Golf Sanctuary. Campbell’s arrival was completely unannounced but he did not need to remove his reflective sunglasses to be recognised despite what he believed his first visit to the club for about 20 years and changes in personnel. Club teaching pro Bruce Farmer immediately said “hello Michael,’’ as he offered a handshake. The sunglasses were removed and the obligatory photos followed. This is an occurrence Campbell is very well used to as could be gleaned from his advice: “No we need to face this way, face towards the light.’’ Then it was off to the club’s driving range to meet up with Lynnette Brooky and Gareth Paddison. Brooky, a winner of two French Opens, is from a similiar era to Campbell and both started their golf in Titahi Bay, north of Wellington. Paddison, like Campbell, played his

amateur golf at Manor Park before turning professional. They were both coached by Mal Tongue. Campbell’s career went into the strastophere in 2005. He won the US Open at Pinehurst No 2 when he defeated no less than Tiger Woods when he was at the peak of his career. A street parade in Wellington followed to celebrate the win. It was just the second time a New Zealander had won a major, following Bob Charles’ win in the 1963 British Open. A few months later Campbell won the World Matchplay Championship. In the semi-final he thrashed Retief Goosen 7 and 6, which came as a surprise to some. Goosen had recorded an amazing 12 and 11 win in his previous match and most bets were on him to win the tournament. Campbell went on to beat Irishman Paul McGinley 2 and 1. He was subsequently named European Tour player of the year and took out the supreme prize at the New Zealand Halberg sports awards.

Kiwi girls in top half of Espirito Santo Trophy N ew Zealand finished in the top half of the field for the Espirito Santo Trophy in Mexico. The world amateur teams’ event for women, held at Riviera Mayo, was dominated by South Korea. In a format where the best two scores from three players count towards the team’s total, South Korea finished at 29 under par over four rounds. There was a massive gap of 21 shots to second-placed Switzerland, which equalled the tournament’s record winning margin. The New Zealand team of Wenyung Keh, Julianne Alvarez and Chantelle Cassidy were not in the same league. They were an ocean away at 16 over par. They finished 19th in a tournament represented by 55 countries. New Zealand’s best performer was Keh. She had counting scores on all four days with totals of 72, 73, 72 and 75. Alvarez’s scores were 77, 75, 74 and 77 and Cassidy’s had 75, 74, 79 and 78. South Korea’s captain Sang-

From left the New Zealand team of Chantelle Cassidy, Julianne Alvarez and Wenyung Keh at the women’s world amateur teams’ championship in Mexico.

Won Ko said the emphasis was always on the team and not individuals. “The key is the team play,” Ko said. “We have been interviewed over the last few days and the players have been so focused on team play. That makes everyone tight and makes for good results.” South Korea’s win was the fourth in the 14 times the country has been represented at the Espirito Santo Trophy which is

staged once every two years. The three previous wins were in 1996, 2010 and 2012. South Korea has also twice finished second and once third. There was no holding back from the Koreans on the last day, despite cruising to victory. Teenagers Hye Jin Choi, 17, and Min Ji Park, 16, each shot five-under par 67 to post a final-round total of 134. It was the tournament’s second-best total, behind the 131 scored by Australia in 2014.

Ko said there was only one question when it came to women’s golf in Korea. “I travel a lot and the first question is always why is your women’s game so strong?’’ Ko said. “And my first answer is we have a greater number of players and they are trying really hard. “Their target is to turn professional. We may be a small country in terms of the land and the population but we have more

NEWS

than 3000 junior players and they are willing to turn professional, which is really a huge number compared to the United States. and Europe, so that’s why I believe our women’s golf is strong.” Korea’s 21-stroke winning margin over second-place Switzerland tied the championship record set by the USA in Chile in 1998. The 72-hole total of 547 also tied for second-lowest. The lowest winning score was 546 by Korea in 2010, when it won by 17 strokes. The 28th Women’s World Amateur Team Championship will be played in Ireland from Augusdt 29-September in 2018 at the Carton House Golf Club in Dublin. The competition, which was held for the 27th time this year, is rotated among three geographic zones: Asia-Pacific, Americas and Europe-Africa. This year’s event was hosted by the Mexican Golf Federation. The teams played for the Espirito Santo Trophy.

illbrook and Jacks Point continually get world acclaim and are literally, currently riding a golfing boom – and why not? They are great courses, set in the stunning backdrop of Lake Wakatipu, the township of Queenstown and The Remarkables range. This is what past Chief Executive of the R&A Limited said of Jacks Point. “Jack’s Point was simply unforgettable. I haven’t seen such an exciting layout for a very long time and the condition of the pure fescue fairways is unmatched in my experience.” It’s an exciting design that has been set around the natural landscape, with minimal excavation, built on the most spectacular of Jack’s Point terrain. The fairways weave through native tussock grasslands, dramatic rock outcrops, steep bluffs and swathes of native bush to the edge of Lake Wakatipu. Worthy boasts from their website – state “With a backdrop of 2300 vertical metres of the Remarkables mountain range and an armchair view of outstanding lake panoramas, Jack’s Point Golf course is one of the most visually spectacular in the world.” We happen to agree. Much has also been written about Millbrook Resort over recent years including owner, Mr Eiichi Ishii being

Golf club membership, is it dead? By Dean Murphy New Zealand Golf Chief Executive

I

f you ask around the industry, a good number of people will tell you that the membership model is dead — and that it has been for some time. I remember clearly a golf management conference in Wellington four years ago where a financial expert assured the audience that a number of clubs in the region would soon be closed based on the current state of their finances and their reliance on a dying membership model. Fast forward to today and those clubs are all still open and, in fact, some of them are in better positions today compared to four years ago.

My view is that the membership model isn’t dead — it’s just different and is much harder to re-

tain than it used to be.

As we head into the future, I still believe that dealing with certainty and a user base that has an emotional membership connection with your club is by far a preferable way to do business. Sure, membership models are not for all clubs but I think as a sector we need to put a great deal of thought into this area and the value we are offering.

Supplying playing rights, an official handicap and access to preferential tee times are always near the top of the list when clubs list membership benefits. I really don’t think this is enough and in a very competitive recreation market, my view is that we need to be offering far more and doing it at far more competitive rates.

The argument that golf is too cheap doesn’t wash with me. We have created the true

value of golf by consistently driving green fee rates down over the past 10 years. It’s time we all had a look at the membership offering and be realistic about what value is being delivered and what our customers are actually looking for.

While I’ve just spoken about retaining the value of a membership model, we as a sector also need to totally and fully embrace the casualisation of golf. The two models can absolutely go hand in hand and we need to accept that casual golfers are here to stay and are a big part of the future.

Think about Air New Zealand. It has an enormous and successful loyalty membership programme in place but also has the grab a seat product. Each has appeal to different consumers yet they work seamlessly together. Membership and causal golf needs to get to this space.

The golfer

of tomorrow wants flexibility in the way they play, where they play and how they pay for it. We collectively as a sector haven’t done enough to embrace the casual golfer and I think we are missing a major opportunity.

In my view we need to be working together to provide products that the casual golfers of tomorrow are looking for. That may well include having casual golfers formally affiliated in the future in a manner that clubs and the national body each see as beneficial.

As it stands now we have 104,000 registered club members and 81,000 registered casual golfers in New Zealand. How we deal with each of these consumer groups and balance their different preferences is the challenge before us.

How green is your golf course? By Andrew Whiley A voice from the south

Last month, I wrote about the Remuera Golf Club and how its club and course superintendent Spencer Cooper had introduced four beehives to the golf course. As Cooper said “We are mindful that our course lies in the heart of suburbia, right next to an enormously popular reserve with significant wetlands and magnificent birdlife (the Waiatarua Reserve). ``We are acutely aware that any poor management techniques on our part could have a detrimental impact – not only on the reserve and its birdlife — but also our neighbours.” Cooper went on to say “bees were a vital part of the ecosystem as they are particularly susceptible to pollutants and pesticides. If Remuera was to be a truly sustainable golf course, bees are an excellent indicator for us, of the environmental health of the golf course and should we successfully maintain healthy populations, then we know we are on the right track”. What I was really impressed with was

the vision that Cooper and the management at the Remuera Golf Club had. They were doing everything they could do to be one of New Zealand’s first golf courses to be GEO-certified within the next two years. (GEO – Golf Environment Organization www.golfenvironment.org) Based in Scotland, GEO is a not-forprofit group founded 21 years ago. It has since become one of the world’s largest and most widely-recognised eco-certification agencies for golf courses. Nearly 150 courses around the world have been certified – including some of the industry’s most famous – with hundreds more participating in the programme. New Zealand turf specialist, Will Bowden, is the local GEO specialist and currently also has Huapai and Gulf Harbour golf courses participating in the OnCourse® programme where they are committed to continually improve in the six important sustainability areas — nature, water, energy, supply chain, pollution control and community. These are audited regularly, once certification has been achieved. For exam-

ple, better use of energy involves finding ways to reduce the use of petrol, diesel and electricity. According to Cooper, for Remuera this has meant changing the mowing schedules, returning some areas to their natural habitat and trying to find a better balance between mowing and course playability. “We will adopt techniques to shave our lighting and heating requirements, embracing technologies such as solar and hybrid power,” he said. The club has already made significant water consumption improvements, recently completing a computer-controlled, in-ground irrigation system for the entire course. It’s replaced “an army of antiquated and inefficient travelling irrigators. The new infrastructure not only irrigates with a lower overall electricity cost, but also uses far less water.” Improving water quality is another major focus. In addition to managing the storm water drainage system more stringently to ensure it remains clean and uncontaminated, the club is also exploring the possible introduction of a bio-remediation station.

The club is also implementing an integrated pest management programme that should see a significant change to the use of pesticides and herbicides around the course. These will be replaced, where possible, with cultural practices and biological pest control techniques. Cooper says GEO-certification also involves the development of a community outreach component. Local schools will be invited to use the course and its environmental-improvement programme as a basis for student projects. “My team and I, along with everyone involved with the Remuera Golf Club, are striving to improve our interaction with the local community,’’ he said. ``We know we can make a difference in providing a healthier, more attractive environment. And if GEO-certification helps to break the negative perception about golf course sustainability, so much the better.” Once again, I challenge all golfers to ask their golf clubs, both staff and board members, what are they doing to become more environmentally friendly.

Is technology working and to what affect? By Duncan Simpson New Zealand PGA Secretary

We’ve spoken before about the many advances in golf club and ball technology over the last 25 years or so, noting that if all the improvements claimed by the manufacturers could be added together, the average golfer should be able to drive the ball as far as Dustin Johnson. The reality, as we know, is different and even for professional golfers, the resultant improvement in scores over recent decades has not happened to the extent you would expect. In 1926, Bobby Jones set a course record of 63 at East Lake (home of the FedEx Cup Tour Championship). In 2007, Zach Johnson went round the same course in 60, which at first glance looks like significant progress. However, Jones was using hickory shafted clubs, and a ball that bore little resemblance to today’s power-packed projectiles, on a course prepared to a much lower standard than now. Who knows what he might have shot with the same

equipment and playing conditions enjoyed by Zach Johnson? Similar comparisons can be made using tournament scores over the years, although there are so many variables involved that any conclusions reached have to be treated with caution. Perhaps a PhD or Master Professional’s thesis will one day find a way to weight all factors fairly and prove that progress has (or has not) occurred. In a sense technology — especially that associated with the ball -– has been its own enemy. Continually lengthening golf courses to compensate for the greater distance golf balls go can only go so far, otherwise championship courses would have to be stretched to 9000 metres or more to be the equivalent of those played back in the 1920s, which is clearly not feasible. So the emphasis turns to course set up, pin positions and green speed. Courses can be toughened dramatically doing this, and these are undoubtedly the major factors influencing scoring: in the end the old adage “drive for show, putt for dough” still

holds true. This is equally, if not more, the case for the average club golfer. New clubs and hotter balls have certainly made the game more enjoyable, and the manufacturers deserve credit for this. But it is not the whole answer: handicaps have not come down over the years despite technology improvements. The reasons for this are perhaps easier to see. Most golfers are time poor and prefer to play rather than spend time on systematic game improvement. Where lessons are taken, the vast majority are on the full swing (“please cure my slice”), not on the short game or putting, so is it any wonder that scoring doesn’t improve? Keep your stats for a few rounds and compare yourself to Lydia Ko. She averages 28.5 putts per round, which is more impressive than it sounds because she hits so many greens (73%) in regulation. So while she ranks 118th on the LPGA Tour for driving distance, she is No 1 in putting and No 1 in rounds under par. She will be working with David Leadbetter to try and squeeze out a few more

metres off the tee, but she will also be putting in countless hours on her putting and short game because that is where her results are coming from, and those are the areas that will continue to drive her future success. So to get the best out of the technology you’ve invested so much in, your first port of call should be your PGA professional. He or she will be able to set up a plan that fits your golfing goals and the time you have available, including drills that can be done at home in just a few minutes a day. Now’s a good time to start, with the better weather and longer daylight hours available. Technology is certainly working at one important level, by keeping golfers enjoying the game for longer. But for real improvement and maximum enjoyment, technology needs to be matched to technique, expert advice and meaningful practice. Bobby Jones understood this in 1926 and 90 years later it is still as true as it was then.

GOLFCOACHING By Anthony Barkley NZPGA Professional

I

t’s getting to that time of year where new products are being released so I will outline some of these and how they can help your golf.

SEE MORE PUTTERS

These are not new to the market really but they are being re-distributed in NZ now and I am one to have signed up to fit and sell these putters. After doing my training as a fitter with SeeMore, I am impressed with the technology they use. Zach Johnson is their main player using the See More putters on tour so they have great credibility. I love the hide the red dot principle which keeps the head stable and square plus their putters have the only true face balance at impact which means the putter head wants to get back to impact square each time. Others won’t do this so it’s a great point of difference. Talking about putters, Rosemark have a new line of putter grips which are go-

100percentgolf.com

What’s new and what’s hot ing great. Lydia Ko has her own grip as part of this range which is fantastic and you see her using this on tour. Golf Pride also have a new larger grip model plus of course Superstroke . Certainly the larger grips are still popular and I believe they do help with tension reduction in the hands but any change should be accompanied with a lesson from your local PGA professional. Sun Mountain have released their new SYNC cart bags which are always popular in store. They are lite, stylish and are not a club brand which means people with any brand can have a Sun Mountain bag. A bonus is that they sit on a Sun Mountain MC3 trundler like a puzzle and will not move. Think about a combination buy of both bag and trundler to get the

best deal on these. I had Callaway in store last week showing me the latest clubs and bags. The new driver looks promising for those looking for forgiveness and the new bags look great. Mizuno have some fantastic looking irons out now called the JPX 900 range and include Boron infused into the faces. These irons look pure, perform awesome and create what they call offensive ball speeds. Worth a look if you like the classic shape of an iron and when have these guys ever produced a bad iron? Footjoy have released their new range for the upcoming summer which includes some new models and new colours in other models. From the same company Titleist have their new driver (917) re-

lease which will be interesting to see how they compete against the other models.

WHATS HOT IN THE SHOP CURRENTLY?

PING G range going great in store as loyal PING players discover the G model. It’s worth looking at these if your clubs are 2+ models old as you will notice a significant difference. The Taylormade M1 still is going well although its coming to the end of its life span and will be interesting to the direction of the brand once sold by Adidas. I think its safe to say things have been quiet generally in the golf industry with the crazy weather we have had this winter. Everyone must be hanging out for a great summer of golf, I know I am.

Anthony Barkley is Golfer Pacific’s Golf professional contributor. He is head professional at Rotorua Golf Club. “Ant” is responsible for many aspects of play at the club. One of the main things that he sees his role is to help people enjoy their golf more. Over the coming month’s he will write these articles with this intention of writing about club fitting, coaching, the mental game and will include the occasional review of new products.

North America’s largest golf Ko top performer in year’s five majors retailer files for bankruptcy I G GOLF NEWS

olfsmith, the largest dedicated golf retailer in North America, has filed for bankruptcy. Golfsmith previously had 109 stories in the United States and 55 in Canada. It employed about 2300 people. The bankruptcy comes on the heels of Nike announcing it would no longer manufacture golf equipment and would return to its core of apparel and shoes. In addition, Sports Authority, once the largest US sporting-goods chain, moved to close down after failing to emerge from bankruptcy this year. Sports Chalet, a chain of about 50 locations, also liquidated this year. The troubled times reflect the decreasing number of golfers in the United States. The National Golf Foundation said golf numbers had dropped more than 20 percent from a peak of 30 million players in 2003 to 24 million last year. Businesses that will be most affected by Golfsmith’s troubles will be apparel company Under Armour and golf equipment manufacturer Callaway. Callaway expects to collect all the money Golfsmith owes it, either through bankruptcy court or insurance. Still, that won’t alleviate long-term concerns

about losing a big customer. Golfsmith spent about $US307 million for merchandise last year. The company’s profitability is closely tied to good trade terms with its top suppliers. Those trade terms included rebates and the ability to buy goods below the costs of its competitors. But when Golfsmith began having liquidity problems, those favourable terms began to vanish. That put pressure on the company and contributed to its bankruptcy. Golfsmith’s website used to say of itself: Golfsmith International, based in Austin, Texas, is the largest specialty golf retailer in the world operating Golfsmith stores in the US and Golf Town stores in Canada. The business operates as an integrated, multi-channel retailer, offering customers the convenience of shopping through any of its 150 plus experiential retail locations or 24/7 shopping at its e-commerce sites, www.golfsmith.com and www.golftown. com. Golfsmith International offers extensive product selection of premier branded golf equipment as well as its proprietary products, advanced club-fitting services and pre-owned clubs.

t was another trophy for Lydia Ko’s cabinet. The latest was the Rolex Annika Major Award as the best performer in the year’s five majors. The award is named after one of the game’s former greats, Annika Sorenstam and she was on hand to present the trophy to Ko after the year’s final major, The Evian Championship in France last month. Ko competed in all five events and finished with a record of a win, a second and a tie for third. She finished in the top 50 in the other two. The win came in the ANA Inspiration at the Mission Hills Country Club in California in March. Her second placing was in the PGA Championship in Washington in June. On that occasion she was beaten in a playoff. The following month, in the US Open in California, she was one of four players tied for third. Ko’s win in the ANA Inspiration saw her become the second youngest to win two majors — male or female. She was aged 18 years, 11 months and 10 days. The youngest winner of two majors is Tom Morris junior. He was

aged 18 years, four months and 27 days when he won his second major, The Open Championship in 1869. The Annika Major Award was only in it’s third year. The two previous winners had been Michelle Wie (2014) and Inbee Park (2015). Ko was thankful her consistency had been recognised. “It means a lot, especially because coming into this year my goal was to be more consistent in majors,’’ she said. “To have it named after Annika and how successful she’s been in majors and just in general and what she’s done for the game, I think there might not be some of us if it wasn’t for a player like her.”

Masson races past rivals with nine birdies in final round NEWS

I

t’s not much fun waiting on the practice putting green to see if you have won — just ask Caroline Masson. Masson scored a brilliant five-under par 67 in the final round of the LPGA Classic in Canada last month to stall off three others who ended up being tied for second. There was every chance Masson could be involved in a playoff and she headed to the practice green while the others completed their rounds. But she later admitted she hardly had her mind on a good putting stroke. “It took forever, it felt like,’’ Masson said. “I was just waiting, hanging around, trying to keep loose, not think about it. But yeah, I just tried to hit a few putts to distract myself from the situation.’’ Masson said she couldn’t bring herself to watch the action on the golf course. “You’re never hoping for anything bad to happen, but obviously I was just not really watching.

Masson admitted that her 2016 season had been a bit of a frustrating one. She made the cut in 14 of 21 starts (Previous best: tied sixth in the ANA Inspiration) before the tournament at Whistle Bear “I always know that I can win a tournament on the LPGA,” Masson said. “I obviously also know that a lot of things have to go right for that. Golf is a funny game, and I was a little streaky this year. “I played a lot of great golf, and I missed a lot of cuts and most of them actually by one shot which was really disappointing. It was a really frustrating period this year. And you know, it’s all about just keep working and believing that you can do it, and that’s what I did and that’s what my team helped me with.” Masson has enjoyed success playing on the Ladies European Tour and was a winner in 2012 at the South African Women’s Open.

“I just heard the reaction, and then when I figured that she (one of the runners-up, Mi Hyang Lee) didn’t make birdie on the last, it was just, yeah, definitely worth it.” Masson’s win saw her become the first German to win on the LPGA Tour in five years. The previous had been Sandra Gal who won the Kia Classic in 2011. Masson, 27, started the final day three shots behind the leader and her finish was the third-best on the LPGA Tour for the season. But it could hardly have got off to a worse start. She had a double bogey on the first hole but had an amazing nine birdies in the lst 17 holes and become the sixth first time winner on the tour for the season. “It’s hard to believe,” Masson said. “I mean it really is. Obviously I was in a good position coming into today, and I was thinking, well, if I can shoot a really good round, I might have a chance, but I was totally not expecting it.”

Caroline Masson with her trophy following her win in Canada to become the first German winner on the LPGA Tour in five years.

REDWOOD PARK WELCOME NEW MANAGER

RIVERSIDE UNDERTAKES NEW BUSINESS MODEL FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

GOLF NEWS

Riverside Golf Club in Hamilton is heading down a new path. The 36 hole club, which comprises two neighbouring courses of Lochiel and Narrows, has appointed Andrew Noble (pictured) as the new golf manager who will guide the club on its new journey. Andrew has spent the last 16 years as a golf coach in Sweden but is no stranger to the Waikato. He started swinging a club at the age of six when his grandfather would take him to Lochiel for a hit and as a player represented Lochiel and Waikato in competition. He was the head teaching professional at the Grodinge Golf Centre in Sweden and he will continue to conduct coaching at Riverside. He is a member of the New Zealand Professional Golfers’ Association. Andrew’s other main focus will be to take the club forward. Riverside is now operating under a new business model, having taken ownership of the golf shops at Lochiel and Narrows which were previously operated by a contractor. Riverside now also operates the clubs’ catering and bar services and so far has seven retail employees on its staff. There has also been a move away from the traditional pro shop stocking loads of golf equipment. The basic golfing needs have been retained but there has been a move to a cafe and a sprig bar offering a good range of food and beverages with both indoor and outdoor seating. Andrew’s tasks will include the promotion of golf and hospitality

Welcome to Redwood Park’s new General Manager, Warren Ogilvie. Warren's skills are broad across all areas of organisational performance, having gained leadership and management experience in both the profit and not for profit sectors. He comes to the club from managing a business in the tourism sector, with previous experience in sports management, retail, local government, and education. In the sports sector, his experiences have been with organisations at a national, regional and community level. He has facilitated projects with a range of sports, assisting many in a successful change process that has resulted in improved capa-

bility. Warren has served on the Boards of three sport organisations at regional and national level. Warren is very keen to engage further with the community and get more people playing golf. This will entail having a good junior programme and creating opportunities for novice players to learn the game and feel confident in their play. The members of Redwood Park Club worked extremely hard in developing the course for the community to use, and it remains important to the club that families and community members enjoy the facilities provided so they lead active healthy lifestyles.

to corporate users and sponsors at both courses and drive membership numbers and generally grow the business. He said those tasks are not too different from what was required from him in Sweden. Junior golf will be at the new core of the club with a big focus on younger players and an emphasis on fun. Andrew and the club is also planning the establishment of a golf school based at Lochiel with both individual tuition and groupclinics. An upgrade of the present driving range and practice facilities is also on the agenda. Riverside chairman Craig Meinsmith said the club could not continue under its previous structure. “The old way simply didn’t serve us well and wasn’t sustainable any longer.’’ “It’s been a challenging and sometimes contentious transition period but we are now through it and can look forward with optimism and excitement for a bright future at Riverside. ’’ Meinsmith told Golfer Pacific.

olfers love to talk about what are their favourite courses and golf holes, so now is the time to get involved and share your opinions with us. When I look around the golf courses of New Zealand, I have many favourite holes and I also definitely have some favourite 19th Holes! We want to hear what are your favourites? Every golf course usually has a signature golf hole that they use in their iconic shots for tourism advertising. I doubt there is a golfer in New Zealand that hasn’t seen the amazing vistas in the photos taken of the 7th or 8th Holes at Jacks Point. Nothing against them, but personally my favourite hole at Jacks Point is the Par 5, 5th Hole. My all-time favourite first hole in New Zealand has to be the 1st Hole at The Hills. Standing on that first tee is simply amazing, with the views, the tee shot needed and the challenges around the green. The 18th hole I most enjoy playing is the 18th (or 9th ) at Coronet Nine, which is a Par 5 with a challenging third shot over the pond in front of the Mill House. I’m also a fan of the 18th Hole at Clearwater that has been the scene of many dramatic finishes in some of New Zealand’s great golf tournaments. When you look around the country there are many other great holes to be con-

sidered. The 17th at Paraparaumu Beach, the 11th at Waitangi, the 16th at Gulf Harbour, and don’t forget the 10th at Terrace Downs or the Par 4, 5th hole at Queenstown Golf Club. What is also important for most golfers is which golf club has the best 19th Hole! Now I have seen a few in my day, not only in New Zealand but internationally. Some are where I have spent many hours solving the world’s problems and some are just a place I stop at when I play the golf course. Kauri Cliffs has my favourite for views; Balmacewan (Otago Golf Club) is my top for its history and definitely Balclutha for the banter and the best post-round food made by members. And don’t forget the heat generated from its cosy log burner! Just a reminder for your submissions, each golf course can have no more than one hole nominated and we are after the best holes in the North Island and the South Island, plus your favourite clubhouse. Your input is important so please get your friends and club involved. »» Here’s your chance to vote for your region’s favourite 18 golf holes and 19th Club House! ALEXANDRA GOLF CLUB • Blue 6000m • White 5718m • Ladies 5179m

A beautiful drive of just over an hour from Queenstown via the river gorges and main vineyard areas of Central Otago Alexandra lies in the Manuherikia Valley at the confluence of the Manuherikia and Clutha rivers. The valley is enclosed by the high mountain ranges of the Old Man, Dunstan and Hawkduns with the barren Knobby Range overlooking the town. This is a special part of rural Central Otago featuring stunning scenery, great history from the gold mining days as well as plenty of things to do for golfers and non-golfers alike. The course features a flat but undulating links style layout with fully irrigated fairways from tee to green. Narrow

fairways mean accuracy is of prime importance if you are to avoid the desert remnants in the rough and the many trees lining the fairways. Golfers find this a most scenic as well as challenging course. Of interest, and one reason why golfers find their round at Alexandra appears to go so quickly, is the lack of continuous holes of same par value! Only twice in the 18 holes do you play consecutive holes of equal par! The golf course and this unique area are well worth a visit. Come and see what we mean, phone SubPar golf shop on 03 448 8374 or email SubPar@xtra. co.nz to book a tee time now. Green fees are $35 for NZ affiliated players with group discounts available. »» www.alexandragolf.co.nz »» State Highway 8, Alexandra 9340 »» Tel/Fax: 03 448 8204

WANAKA GOLF CLUB • Blue 5743m • White 5474m • Ladies 5038m

A SHORT 50-minute scenic drive from Queenstown, the township of Wanaka is a stunning and tranquil holiday destination in the heart of the Queenstown Lakes region. Perched above the picturesque township is the lovely Wanaka golf club; the biggest club in Otago and Southland with over 1000 members. Host to the NZ Mixed foursomes in 2016, the NZ Wom-

The Cromwell Golf Course is located in the centre of Cromwell township. At 200km from the coast the 18-hole tournament course is further from the coast than any other New Zealand course. It is widely considered to be one of the best inland links courses in New Zealandbeing rated in the top 40 New Zealand courses in the 2016 Australian Golf Digest rankings and currently plays host to the New Zealand Open Final Qualifier. Situated near Lake Dunstan in the heart of the fastest growing wine region in the country, the course is one that will challenge the championship player, while providing plenty of enjoyment for the longer handicapper. The upgrade completed in 2009 has created a fantastic golf experience from tee to green. Cromwell’s low rainfall, 2200 hours of sunshine per year and sand based fairways combine to guarantee year-round dry underfoot conditions. From the tee

en’s Seniors in 2012 and Men’s in 2009, Wanaka Golf Club boasts a well maintained, charming and challenging layout, with great value for money green fees. Measuring 5743m (blues) and 5474m (whites) the course isn’t long by modern standards, but careful course management and the ability to shape your shots is important if you want to score well. The small greens and natural contours of the land also present their own challenge, so playing safe to the middle of the greens is recommended.

the open driving holes can be problematic where the prevailing Nor-wester can take hold of any erratic shots. The rough is a challenge, mainly because of the sandy lies or the Marram grass while the large greens have challenging contours and one of the best putting surfaces you could hope to find. The par 4, 18th is a great finishing hole playing 415m off the black tees. Into the wind your drive is challenging and requires a well struck ball to get you into the valley which is guarded by bunkers either side of the fairway. The approach shot to the green funnels into the basin green but care is required to avoid the front-right green-side bunker. There are a number of other unique holes on the course including exciting doglegs, reachable par 5’s which the longer hitter loves, and tricky par 3’s that punish wayward tee shots. Green fees are $50-$75 with club, trundler and electric carts available for hire. »» »» »» »»

It’s also important to try and keep your eye on the ball, as the spectacular views across the town and lake to Mount Aspiring National Park are some of the best in New Zealand, and can certainly add an extra distraction to your game. The two nines are very different. The front-nine, which was established in the 1930s, features an undulating layout with small greens nestled amongst the rolling terrain. The back nine, which was added across the road in 1967, is much longer and slightly flatter—but no less spectacu-

lar. The club has progressed significantly in the past decade with capital improvements and course upgrades, making it one of the most scenic and playable courses around. The club features all the usual facilities you’d expect from a quality golf club, including club and cart hire, fully-stocked pro shop, driving range and a café and bar. »» »» www.wanakagolf.co.nz »» »» Email: wanaka@golf.co.nz »» »» Phone: +64 3 443 7888

Competitions date back to pre war years, and Maramarua is hosting another year of the Counties 54 hole Strokeplay Tournament on Sat 5th and Sun 6th November 2016. It is open to Men -30hcp and Women -36hcp, playing 27 holes each day, in separate divisions. Players meet new and old friends in a relaxed atmosphere, and participate in an historic event. AWHITU WIN THE COVIC CHALLENGE CUP

On Tuesday 13th September Counties-Manukau Veterans golfers played

the third round of their finals series at the Waiuku Golf Club. In dry and sunny conditions 86-players represented their twelve clubs in various team pennants golf competitions. In a surprise victory Awhitu won the COVIC Challenge CUP from holders Huntly 40.5 to 31.5, thanks largely to their number two Selwyn Tangihaere winning his match by a massive 15.5 to 2.5. This means he won 15 holes and halved another out of the eighteen holes played. It is unusual that the two leading teams in the COVIC SHIELD finals would score exactly the round winning points (149), but that is exactly what Huntly and Clarks Beach did to stay locked in their first place battle with three rounds to go. They are 5-points ahead of Waikare with Maramarua a point further back in fourth. In the Plate finals Waiuku used their home course advantage to win with an impressive 155-points and move into second place, just 2-points behind leaders Pakuranga on 6-points, with Pukekohe another 2-points back in third place. The next COVIC round will be played at Huntly Golf Club on Wednesday 5th October 2016, where Wattle Downs will challenge Awhitu for the CUP as all clubs will continue to do battle to win the SHIELD

NICK VOKE USA UPDATE

Nick Voke is now back into his College golf commitments after the summer break which saw him play a number of US Amateur events as an individual. The first event of the season was the Badger Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin. The event was played on the University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wisconsin which was recently named the third-best “Campus Golf Course” in the country by Golfweek. University Ridge plays host to the American Family Insurance Championship each June. Kirk Triplett won the 2016 Champions Tour event, shooting a 17-under par score of 199. The Iowa Cyclones won the event by 10 shots with two of the five man team finishing in the top ten. Nick finished tied for eighth with rounds of 70, 72 and 72 giving him a total of 214. He was six shots off the winner who finished with a total of 208. This is Nick’s 15th top ten finish in his college career.

CONDITIONS NAVIGATED AT POWERCO THAMES VALLEY STROKE PLAY CHAMPS

Auckland golfer Ewen Dawe claimed overall honours at a weather-affect-

ed Powerco Thames Valley Stroke Play Championship on Sunday, August 25. Played through intermittent rain and strong wind at the Te Aroha Golf Club, play was stopped at 18 holes, leaving Dawe with a two-shot victory over Te Aroha’s Mark Wilson. Tournament organising committee member Moana Arnott said the day had been a success, despite plenty of external factors having an impact. “The weather really did not come to the party for us, which made it hard and meant attendance was down, but it was an enjoyable day of golf for those who came along,” Arnott said. “With the rain and wind being such a factor, it was those who managed to play through the tough conditions who had success in the end. “The Te Aroha Golf Club are very grateful to the tournament’s principal sponsors Powerco for their continued support.” A total of 24 golfers attended the day, with competitors coming from as far as Northland, and joining a collection of local-based players. The tournament was the last of the major winter events for the club, with the twilight golf and footgolf programmes about to get underway in the lead-in to Christmas and the New Year. See following a full list of winners at the 2016 Powerco Thames Valley Stroke Play Championship.

PLAY-OFF NEEDED TO FIND CHAMPIONS – LUNDEN LINKS

It was a close affair from start to finish in the 2016 Lunden Links Competition played earlier this year. The Lunden Links is a nett based Secondary Schools Competition with teams of four players, and the best 3 scores counting towards a team total each day. This year’s competition saw players experience two of our 9-hole courses, firstly starting at Hukanui Golf Club, followed by Ngahinepouri Golf Club. On Day 1 at Hukanui Golf Club, players were experiencing very true and fast greens. Players who made the most of the conditions, and put together some great golf were Mitchell Stuthridge (HBHS) with

66, Sean Bonenkamp (St Peters) & Jayden Cleary (HBHS) both with 67, Josh Law (St Peters), Cody Mortensen (Pio Pio College) and Keenan Membery (HBHS) all with 68. Some great scoring on day 1 resulted in a team total of 205 for both Hamilton Boys High School #1 and St Peters School. Following closely behind after day 1 were Pio Pio College with 210, and a further 11 shots behind were St Johns on 221. On Day two, the competition moved to Ngahinepouri Golf Course, again in great condition, the scene was set for some great scoring. Pio Pio College came out firing on Day two looking for their first win in the competition’s history. Jack Mortensen posting nett 64, and brother Cody Mortensen with 67, Pio Pio College were in pole position. Co-leaders after day 1 Hamilton Boys High School #1 dropped away slightly with Keenan Membery posting his second 68 of the competition, Jayden Cleary was solid with 72 and Leo Ko with 74, but it wasn’t good enough to keep up with Pio Pio College. Pio Pio College number 1 Oliver Barnsdall posted 73 for a team total of 204 (the best of the day). St Peters School who were co-leaders at the conclusion of day 1, went about their work with counting scores from Scott Law (74), Sean Bonenkamp (70) and Roger Tsao (65), a team total of 209 would push them to an overall total of 414, the same total as Pio Pio College. Out came the rules of the com-

petition, which stated “if a tie exists at the conclusion of the competition, the non-counting score on the final day will determine the winner”. Both non-counting scores were 79, Josh Law (St Peters) and Heath Barnsdall (Pio Pio College). “If a tie still exists, the number 1 players will play a sudden death playoff from a hole determined by the organising committee”. Oliver Barnsdall (Pio Pio College) and Scott Law (St Peters) would head down the 18th hole, in the first play-off hole. Both showed nerves when putting for victory on the first play-off hole, Oliver firstly missing his 15foot opportunity then Scott missing his 5foot opportunity to take it out. They would head back down 18 only to both make par again. It was then decided to go down the 7th hole, which screams danger for anything travelling down the right side, in which Oliver found out, after Scott Law placed his tee shot strategically in the left trees, Oliver sent his tee shot aggressively down the right hand side only to find a horrible kick which ended up out of bounds. Scott then punched out making bogey for the hole and taking the win for St Peters. An exciting finish to the competition which saw some great golf and equally good sportsmanship between schools. A very big thank you to Hukanui and Ngahinepouri Golf Clubs. The golf courses were in great condition, and all the players were raving about it. If you are looking for somewhere to play your next round, try one of these or better yet, try both. RAU WANA TOURNAMENT AT KAWERAU

TARANAKI NOTICEBOARD

Rau Wana Tournament was held on a beautiful autumn day, Sunday August 21st. Golfers from Te Teko, Murupara, Ohope, Mt Maunganui, Tauranaga, Whakatane, Hamilton, Australia, Christchurch and Local club Kawerau turned out to play for this popular trophy. He was one of Kawerau Golf Club’s favourite gentleman and the large turn out is the prestige this man had at this club. The recipient of this Trophy is local man Lucky Karekare who played golf with Rau Wana from a very young age. It was good to see him win this trophy as he had many wonderful memories playing golf with Rau and was very emotional when receiving the trophy.

KAIMAI TRAY AT MORRINSVILLE

Beanies, snoods and thermal underwear were the order of the day when the hardy Omokoroa members made the trip over the Kaimais to Morrinsville to contest the Kaimai Tray. This competition is played annually between Omokoroa, Omanu, Walton and Morrinsville. The temperature gauge told us that the temperature was somewhere around 4 degrees when we arrived at the golf course – but that was not factoring in the wind chill from the steady southerly breeze. It was cold! A warming cup of tea prepared us all as best possible and off we went with a shotgun start at 10am. As the day progressed the cold southerly did abate somewhat and the sun was shining quite brilliantly. The course was in very good condition indeed consider-

ing the amount of rain they have also had over there. By the time we made it to the 14th tee we were able to strip off some of the layers we were wearing and bask in the sunshine. The Omokoroa scoring was steady but not remarkable – with the Morrinsville and Walton Men taking up most of the places on the first page of the leaderboard. However, the Omokoroa Ladies produced some good scores and we were all highly delighted when it was announced that the overall winners were Omokoroa. Omokoroa had not won this trophy since 2003 and last year playing on our own course we were pipped into second place by just 5 points. So a great result and an excellent day out. Following the other recent success for Omokoroa in the I’Anson Trophy and interclub with Whangamata and the Mount it is clear that Omokoroa social golf is in great shape.

HAWKES BAY/POVERTY BAY ANGELA TAKES THE CROWN SOURCE: Hawkes Bay Today

Everything happens for a reason and, for Angela Jones, a maiden Kapi Tareha Memorial Tournament crown in Napier in August goes a long way to explaining that. That is not to say it is the most important thing in Jones’ life after prevailing in five attempts but, suffice it to say, there

is a common denominator as to why the stars and moons aligned for her defining moment as an amateur golfer. Yes, the 25-year-old from Havelock North swears by her set of metal woods and irons that her return to the province almost two months ago teed her up for the annual 54-hole tournament. The complex web of events that saw Jones etch her name on the salver yesterday is worth mentioning – job, boyfriend and coach, to name a few. “I wasn’t expecting too much. I just wanted to shoot under 80,” said the three handicapper last night after carding a gross 225 following three rounds at the Napier Golf Club course to beat fellow Hawke’s Bay/Poverty Bay representative Tessa McDonald, of Gisborne, by six strokes. So this is how it panned out after Jones graduated as a qualified nurse from the Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT) to

head to the big smoke to work at the orthopaedic department of Auckland City Hospital in Grafton in 2014. “I met my boyfriend [Duncan Morrison] about a year ago while I worked there for 18 months,” she said of the champion orienteer from the Bay, whom she had never met while growing up in Otane. The former Central Hawke’s Bay College pupil later found out their parents – Sheree and Bruce Jones, and Val and Derek Morrison – were acquainted before their children’s paths crossed. “My grandfather, Jock Jones, of Otane, employed Duncan’s father at the milk producers,” she explained. “Yes, it’s tiny old New Zealand so it’s all so crazy.” Both sets of parents cheered her on throughout the weekend and her boyfriend lugged her golf bag.

GHB&PBW 36 HOLE STROKE PLAY TOURNAMENT

Hawkes Bay’s annual 36 Hole stroke play tournament was held on Sunday 11th September at Napier Golf Club. A beautiful sunny day was the order and that’s we got! Dallas Williams showed his class winning the Mens Gross competition with a total of 141, with Mako Thompson the runner up with 143. Russell Mitchell was third on count-back from Stu Duff, both players going around in 144. In the nett section Gregory Eketone won the day with a nett 136 from Cosmo Graham on 142 and Blake Burton 143. In the Women’s gross section Tessa McDonald was a clear winner with 150 from Angela Jones on 153 and 5 shots back to Sara Deam in 3rd place with 158. Women’s nett saw Pip McCarthy a 10 shot winner with 140, Deb Ruwhui second on count-back with 150, which Martha Manaena scored also to finish 3rd.

MANAWATU WANGANUI LINTON CAMP WIN ZONES COMPETITION

Linton Camp won the men’s Zones Interclub competition last month defeating Manawatu 5 – 1 in the final, played at Palmerston North Golf Club. Going into the final Manawatu had won the comp on 6 previous occasions, the last time in 1992, while Linton Camp had only won it once in 1983. Taihape Golf Club is the most prolific winner of the competition having won it 23 times in the

63 year history of the competition. The Linton Camp team was Trevor Shailer, Eugene Wilson, Tony Rogers and Mark Salmon vs the Manawatu team of Mike Hallam, Richard Shaw, Leigh Thomas and Stuart Robbie. In the singles matches Shailer, Wilson and Salmon all won their singles, while Manawatu’s Leigh Thomas got Manawatu’s only point beating Tony Rogers. Linton Camp won both fourball best ball matches.

Greenskeeper Shay Melis on 144. The women’s event was very close with local Rangitikei player Jill Hall winning the Challenge Shield with scores of 77 and 84. One shot back was Wanganui’s Tara Raj (82, 80). Another shot back in third was Manawatu’s Tania Hook (79, 84). The course proved challenging for most players despite the perfect conditions. Rangitikei demands very good course management tee to green, and some tricky pin placements meant players needed to position the ball well on the greens. Many players struggled with that requirement which led to higher scores than many would have expected.

GABRIELLE PALADO AGAIN WINS WELLINGTON STROKEPLAY AT MANOR PARK

SIMON CUP SALVER SHARED

Gabrielle Palado was overcome with emotion after winning the Wellington Strokeplay Championship for the second year in a row at the home of champions, Manor Park, at the weekend (September 24-25). The Manor Park star went into the final round of the 72-hole tournament two shots behind fellow Manor Park member Darae Chung but a five-over par 78 was enough to get her home by two shots from Chung. The emotions were in check as Gabrielle and Darae thanked each other on the completion of the final hole. But soon after, when the significance of Gabrielle’s achievement was realised, she shed a few tears. The win was much closer than when she won the same tournament at Te Marua last year by 14 shots. Gabrielle had rounds of 81, 75, 87 and 78 for a total of 321 while Darae’s scores were 82, 76, 83 and 82 for 323. Another Manor Park member Jennie Hewett finished sixth. In the men’s division former Manor Park club champion Jonathan Cane ran out a comfortable winner. Jonathan, winner of the 2002 club championships, went into the final round with a five-shot lead over Peter Spearman-Burn. Jonathan had a two-over par 73 for the last 18 holes which reduced his winning margin to four after Spearman-Burn had 72. Jonathan had a four-round total of 283 with scores of 68, 71, 71 and 73. Spearman-Burn was on 287 with rounds of 71, 71, 73 and 72. Five shots away third was Manor Park player George Barralet. He had scores of 69, 75, 72 and 76 for a total of 292. Manor Park greenkeeper Ben Slaven finished fourth. He had scores of 68, 77, 78 and 70 for 293.

3RD FALDO SERIES ASIA NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIP

The third Faldo Series Asia New Zealand Championship will be played at Clearwater Golf Club from December 12th-13th 2016. Once again the event is extremely thankful for the vision and support of the Canterbury Golf Development Trust. New Zealand age grade winners will travel to Laguna Lang Co Resort near Danang in Vietnam for the Asian Finals contested against 19 other nations in March 2017. This new venue, after 10 years at the Faldo Course at Mission Hills in China, brings a new Faldo designed course as a championship challenge for those lucky enough to compete. Winners in each age group in Vietnam will advance to an expenses paid entry into the Faldo Series European finals.

The opportunity to engage with a six time major champion at a social and professional level is an experience that any aspiring professional golfer will find inspiring. In the first two years of the New Zealand Championship we have been privileged to see our players perform strongly and it is only a matter of time before one of our champions conquers the Asian region competition. Entries are open to all amateur players with a NZGA handicap index of 10 or lower born in the years of 1995 to 2004. Priority will be given to players who have competed in previous years, and then players will be selected by handicap index should the capacity of 90 players be reached. See www.clearwatergolf.co.nz for entries.

OTAGO SOUTHLAND WESTPAC QUEENSTOWN OPEN & MASTERS

The Queenstown Open and Masters weekend went very well despite some trying conditions on September 4. A quality field turned out for the event. Luke Toomey certainly showed his class but Craig Palmer despite a poor 1st round played really well. Queenstown WJGC junior Callum Judkins (16) could not make the Saturday due to the NZ junior age group champs in Nelson but played the 36 holes Sunday 69 and 70 which is 5 under! The Eisenhower and Espirito guys and girls graciously donated their prizes to the WJGC. A big thank you to Bruce Cunningham, Holmes Byars, Nowell Stewart, Rob Taylor and Heather Atkinson for all your hard work. Huge congratulations to Tournament

Director and new Father Simon Boland who once again ran a fantastic event.

KIDS GIVING GOLF A GO

A great day last month was had at the Ashburton Domain with over 100 children aged 6 and 7 learning golf as part of a Have a Go at Sport day which was organised by Mid Sport Canterbury. “It was a great opportunity for the children to learn some of the fundamental skills of golf using the SNAG Golf equipment” said Malcolm Wood Aorangi Community Golf Manager. “The kids had so much fun hitting the ball to the velco targets and then using the launchers for a long drive competition. We are looking forward to getting golf into more schools in Aorangi to engage more children in the game”. Children attended the day both from local Ashburton primary schools along with Rakaia and Mayfield School.

2016 WANAKA OPEN TO CHRIS SNOW IN PLAYOFF

Chris Snow (St Clair) won the 36-hole Wanaka men’s tournament after scoring

a par three on the second hole of a sudden death playoff to beat Sungwoo Han (Queenstown) last month. The players finished the two rounds on par figures and halved the first playoff hole, each scoring a par four. On the second playoff hole, Han dragged his tee shot well left of the green while Snow’s iron finished on the putting surface. When Han failed to get up and down, Snow two-putted for his par three. National under-15 gold medallist Joseph Hancock (Otago) was third, one shot behind the leaders, and is making a statement for inclusion in the Otago senior teams. Wanaka professional Alan Rose was fourth followed by Kane Wardell (Allan Grange), Brandon Hodgson (Otago) and Fraser MacLachlan (Millbrook Resort). MacLachlan was the standout of the Otago players in Queenstown the week before but lost any chance of winning with an 8-over 78 in the morning round. He recovered with a sub-par 69 in the afternoon to ensure he is on target for certain selection in Otago teams.Han set the early pace with a 3-under 67 which included four birdies. At lunch, he held a two-shot lead over Snow with Wardell a further shot back while Hancock finished on 2-over 72. Jonny MacKay (Lower Waitaki) and Hodgson kept in touch with 73 each while, barring an upset, the remaining senior players looked out of contention.

In the afternoon, Snow was the epitome of consistency birdieing the par-5 10th for a sub-par homeward nine after turning 2-over with bogeys on the first and ninth holes. Sam Smythe (Dunstan) finished in a tie for 14th but has every reason to fondly remember this year’s tournament. He hit a five iron on the 170m par-3 13th for his maiden hole-in-one.

QUEENSTOWN OPEN TO WAIKATO’S LUKE TOOMEY

Luke Toomey, Wenyung Keh and Andrew Hobbs emerged as the winning players in the Queenstown Open over 72 holes on the Kelvin Heights course last month. Toomey (Riverside) won the men’s event by an impressive eight shots while Keh (Pakuranga) finished strongly to win the women’s by five shots from Chantelle Cassidy (Riverside). Hobbs (Island Park) set the scene on Saturday with 73 for an overnight lead of four eventually taking the masters (over40) event by five shots from John McIntee (Otago) and Simon Boland (Queenstown). Toomey has been the nemesis for the Otago men’s team, having played at No1 for Waikato which beat Otago in the past two national interprovincial finals. Hills golf director Craig Palmer came second with a strong finish, carding a 5-under 67, one shot off Jamie Anstiss’ course record. Last year’s winner, Fraser MacLachlan

had to be content with a tie for third with Tasman’s Ryan Chisnall but was still the star of the Otago triallists. The leading contenders in the men’s event meant business from the outset. Toomey and MacLachlan shared the first-round lead with 68. Cadenhead was one shot back, while Chisnall and Harry Smith started with a one-under par 71. Croudis was three shots back on 74, while five players were tied on 75 for a share of seventh place. On Saturday afternoon, Toomey went sub-par again with 69 to take the outright lead from Chisnall and MacLachlan. Cadenhead fell five off the pace with 73, while Duncan Croudis, Palmer and Smith were on par figures overnight. Some greens became unplayable due to surface water and play was suspended for more than half an hour late in the third round. But the greens drained well and Toomey was not side tracked by the delay, carding his second 4-under 68 to take a four-shot lead over Chisnall. MacLachlan was one further shot back on 210 while Cadenhead was the only other serious contender on 211. In the women’s event, Cassidy took first round honours with 74, while Keh lay in second place one shot behind. Cassidy increased her lead in the second round with 72, Keh was three shots back and Julianne Alvarez in third place, eight shots off the pace.

NEW ZEALAND OPEN GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP ATTRACTS NEW NAMING RIGHTS SPONSOR

New Zealand Golf and Millbrook Tour-

naments Limited (promoters of the New Zealand Open) are delighted to announce the signing of ISPS Handa as the new naming rights sponsor for the ISPS HANDA New Zealand Open for a minimum three-year term, covering the 2017, 2018 and 2019 events. This follows the co-naming rights agreement that was in place for the 2016 BMW ISPS Handa New Zealand Open, with ISPS Handa now taking the sole naming rights position for the next three years. In addition to the naming rights agreement, the organisers are also pleased to announce that the partnership agreement with the Japan Golf Tour (JGTO) has been renewed for 2017. Under this agreement a minimum of 25 players from the JGTO will compete in the 2017 ISPS Handa New Zealand Open. “In view of the fact that the first five finishers in the 2016 event all ply their trade on the Japan Golf Tour, this partnership agreement again represents an excellent investment that the tournament continues to make in terms of securing quality Professional players from this tour,” said Tournament Chairman John Hart. Mr Hart also thanked BMW for their enormous support for the Queenstown event over the past three years, which has helped grow the event into one of Oceania’s premier sporting events since it’s re-launch as a Pro-Am format in 2014. “With the tournament’s focus on Japan in particular, it is especially exciting to have ISPS Handa on board as a naming rights partner for the next three years. It gives the tournament enormous stability, and further cements our relationship with Japan.” CEO of New Zealand Golf Dean Murphy added his delight at this significant addition to the national Open. “ISPS Handa sponsors over twenty tournaments around the globe, and to have them add our premier men’s golf event to their huge stable of events is a real vote of confidence to the event that we deliver.” Dr Handa, ISPS Chairman and Founder was equally thrilled. “I thoroughly enjoyed playing in the Pro-Am section of the tournament this year, and saw for myself how this innovative tournament brought so many business and sporting people together. “I am pleased to have our organisation

support the ISPS Handa New Zealand Open, and to use this opportunity to highlight our goal of adding assistance to blind and disabled golf throughout New Zealand, Australia and SE Asia.” The ISPS Handa New Zealand Open will be played in Queenstown at Millbrook Resort and The Hills on March 9-12, 2017.

VOLUNTEERS WANTED FOR ISPS HANDA NEW ZEALAND OPEN GOLF TOURNAMENT – ‘VOLLY SPOT’ ON OFFER FOR NEXT YEAR’S TOURNAMENT

Organisers of the ISPS Handa New Zealand Open are once again on the hunt for keen golf enthusiasts to volunteer – and one lucky ‘volly’ will get drawn to play in the Pro-Am section of the 2018 tournament. The ISPS Handa New Zealand Open tournament, a tier one event on the PGA Tour of Australasia, will be held from March 9 to 12 2017 at Millbrook Resort and The Hills golf courses in Queenstown. The growth in tournament size – with both Millbrook Resort and The Hills hosting the event for the fourth year running – means up to 450 volunteers are needed over the first two days of the four-day tournament. All volunteers will once again go into a draw to win a space as an amateur player in the 2018 tournament, and there are complimentary rounds of golf on offer too. Tournament Director Michael Glading says volunteer assistance is “absolutely key” to the success of the event. “The 2017 event needs the support of enthusiastic volunteers to ensure successful delivery throughout tournament week, and across both golf courses,” he says. Arrowtown ‘local’ Richard Hoskin is the new volunteers’ manager, working for New Zealand sports marketing agency The Clubhouse which is managing the 2017 event. Former first-class Otago cricketer Hoskin is also the former chief executive of Sport Southland, and he currently operates Arrowtown Lodge with wife Sally. Daughter Laura, 21, is a rising young golf star currently training in the United States. Hoskin is relishing his new volunteers’

role with New Zealand’s leading tournament. “We’re looking for anyone who’ll bring enthusiasm, motivation and passion to this outstanding sporting event. You don’t have to be a golf lover to be a volunteer, though it certainly does help,” he said. Volunteers are needed to carry out roles such as carrying scoreboards, marshaling on course, shuttle drivers, ‘ball spotting’, overseeing the leader board, walker scorers and inputting data in the media centre. Tournament organisers are looking for ‘vollys’ for either the entire four days of the event or for just Thursday and Friday. They’re asked for a minimum commitment of six hours on any given day, benefitting in return from free tournament admission and parking, a commemorative shirt and cap, and lunch each day. Prospective volunteers can register by contacting Richard Hoskin at richard@ theclubhouse.kiwi and all details are at http://www.nzopen.co.nz/volunteers. html

Developing Better and More Capable Managers-GMANZ

D

eveloping better and more capable Golf Club managers was the primary focus of the 2016 Golf Managers Association of New Zealand, 7th Biennial Conference that took place in Wellington between August 28 and August 30 2016. The Conference attracted a number of New Zealand’s renowned sports and business leaders as presenters and just on 100 golf club manager delegates and golf industry personnel. Billed “Delivering Golf,” the Conference clearly focussed on the GMANZ’s purpose to support its membership and increase golf and other club management capabilities across New Zealand through the provision of training, resources, network and support. The Conference targeted anyone with a Golf Club Management or Governance role. A range of noted guest speakers including NZ Golf CEO Dean Murphy, NZ Rugby CEO Steve Tew, and Former Rugby League International Howie Tamati spoke at the conference. One of the highlights of the Conference was the breakfast at The Beehive with Prime Minister John Key present. John a keen golfer in his own right gave a very interesting speech on his thoughts on the golf industry in New Zealand, the outstanding efforts of our two key players on the world stage, Lydia Ko and Danny Lee, the importance of golf as a tourism income earner for the country and how golf clubs throughout the country could add value to tourism promotion. The next conference is Queenstown 2018. For more information on GMANZ contact Des Topp, Executive Officer on +64 (021) 392007 or info@ gmanz.co.nz.
