omething disturbing was drawn to my attention recently. A member of my golf club joined a group of three in a tournament. It was a teams’ event where the scores of the four players contributed towards the team’s total. Early in the game my golf club member noticed that one of the other players had placed his marker an inch or so in front of his ball on the green. When he replaced the ball, it was an inch or so in front of the marker. In other words he had cribbed a couple of inches or so. Initially my golf club member didn’t say anything because he wasn’t absolutely sure what he had at first witnessed.
Making your mark on the green But when he watched more carefully the next time, and saw a repeat of the cribbing, he spoke up. The response was everyone does it. But, thankfully, the cribbing stopped. This was a clear case of someone trying to take advantage of the fact that all four players were on the same side — hoping nobody would say anything because it was only a little bit of cribbing. I have used the word cribbing but you may also know this act as cheating. It was also a reminder of what may go on when there is nobody within a playing group who is opposition. But that’s another story. But what this episode also did
was get me thinking about how we mark the ball on the green. Everyone I play with, everyone I see on the PGA Tour, everyone I see on the LPGA Tour, all mark the ball from behind. Is it a rule that you must mark the ball from behind? The answer is no. The only requirement is that you must replace the ball to where it was. Nothing else. The marker is the guide to where the ball was. With that in mind and the rebel in me, I decided last month to start marking the ball at the front. The first time I did so, I told my three playing partners before we started that I would be doing something different for the day. I informed them that
whatever it was would occur on every hole and I asked them to look out for it. The first hole went by and they didn’t even notice. The second hole went by and again they didn’t notice. Five holes went by and still they didn’t notice. I couldn’t keep them in suspense any longer and explained how I had been marking the ball. It was an interesting exercise. I had to be careful when replacing the ball not to put it in front of the marker as habit dictated but I have continued with the same practice since. Call me rebellious. I wondered if any of the top players in the world started doing the same, what the reaction would be.

wo brilliant rounds paved the way for club professional Dominic Barson to win the Taranaki Open, the opening event of this season’s Charles Tour. Barson tied the course record on day two of the tournament when scoring an eight-under par 64 at the New Plymouth Golf Club at Ngamotu. The score included an eagle three on the 527m par five ninth hole. Barson holed out with a nine iron. But the outstanding round did not, at the time, inspire Barson to thinking he would go on to win. “I can’t maintain it for the weekend,’’ Barson said afterwards. “I know it’s hard to believe but I honestly don’t know where it’s going. I know it went straight today but I don’t know whether it’s going 40 yards left or right.’’ But it proved not to be just a one-off. Barson repeated the fireworks on the final day when scoring a seven-under par 65, without scoring worse than par. It took him from one behind the leader at the beginning of the day to win in a canter by four. Barson, 43, has been playing the Charles Tour events, or its equivalents, for many years and breaking through for his first win on a course where he is the club professional made it all the more special. “It’s certainly very special to win one here,’’ Barson said. “I turned pro when I was 16 and that’s a long time ago, so I must have played 50 or 60 of these events over the years, so it’s nice to finally win one. “It’s an amazing feeling and I hit it really well today and carded no bogeys which was the main plan for the round.” Barson said the win would not alter his ambitions as a professional golfer and it would be back to work on Monday. “It’s straight back to business and I will be back in the pro shop tomorrow and Tuesday and Wednesday....” Barson ended the tournament at 18 under par with scores of 70, 64, 71 and 65. Second on 14 under par was Christchurch professional Shaun Jones while third, at 12 under par, was Masterton amateur Kerry Mountcastle. In the women’s section a four-hole playoff was required to decide the winner. Tyla Kingi (Opotiki) and Ela Grimwood (Gulf Harbour) finished the regulation 72 holes at 10 over par
with a four-round total of 298. Both players sunk clutch putts in the first three play-off holes to keep their hopes alive before Kingi broke the deadlock on the fourth extra hole and post her first win on the Charles Tour. Kingi, the inaugural Junior Tiger winner, had been away from the game for a long time with illness so to see her bounce back in this fashion was extremely impressive. “It’s great to be playing again after a bit of time off, so I am very pleased,’’ Kingi said. “It was even better to have mum on the bag for the whole tournament.”

New Zealand ties with USA in Eisenhower GOLF NEWS
N
ew Zealand was tied with the United States when finishing sixth in the Eisenhower Trophy. The tournament, officially named the world amateur teams’ championship, was held in Mexico last month. The New Zealand team comprised Luke Toomey, Nick Voke and Ryan Chisnall. In a format where the best two scores counted towards the team’s score over four rounds, New Zealand finished at 15 under par. That was only four shots shy of second-placed England. Australia was a runaway winner with a score of 38 under par. Toomey, from Waikato, was the leading performer for New Zealand. He had counting scores in all four rounds with totals of 74, 70, 66 and 70. Toomey finished the tournament at six under par and finished 16th on the individual table. He was very pleased with the team’s effort.
“All of us can be proud of how we carried ourselves this week and to finish sixth is a super achievement,” Toomey said. Voke, from Auckland, was the second top performer for New Zealand with counting scores in each of the first three rounds. He shot 69, 68, 72 and 72. He was 20th on the individual table with a total of five under par. There was no hiding Voke’s delight at representing his country. “This has been the most enjoyable and memorable golfing week of my career,” Voke said. Chisnall, from Tasman, had non-counting scores of 75, 74 and 76 on the first three days but chimed in with 68, the best score of the Kiwis on the fourth day. He was relieved to contribute. “That was pretty huge really to get the monkey off the back,’’ Chisnall said. “I would have been gutted to come away and not have

a score contributing to the week. “The boys were pretty fizzed with how we went. Tied sixth is a great result and finishing tied with the USA is a good achievement.”
The star performers for Australia were Cameron Davis and Curtis Luck. They finished first and second respectively on the individual table with scores of 17 and 15 under par. The Australian team finished
at 38 under par, a massive 19 shots ahead of runner-up England on 19 under par. Sharing third at 18 under par was Austria and Ireland while fifth was Norway at 17 under par.

olfers love to talk about what are their favourite courses and golf holes, so now is the time to get involved and share your opinions with us. When I look around the golf courses of New Zealand, I have many favourite holes and I also definitely have some favourite 19th Holes! We want to hear what are your favourites? Every golf course usually has a signature golf hole that they use in their iconic shots for tourism advertising. I doubt there is a golfer in New Zealand that hasn’t seen the amazing vistas in the photos taken of the 7th or 8th Holes at Jacks Point. Nothing against them, but personally my favourite hole at Jacks Point is the Par 5, 5th Hole. My all-time favourite first hole in New Zealand has to be the 1st Hole at The Hills. Standing on that first tee is simply amazing, with the views, the tee shot needed and the challenges around the green. The 18th hole I most enjoy playing is the 18th (or 9th ) at Coronet Nine, which is a Par 5 with a challenging third shot over the pond in front of the Mill House. I’m also a fan of the 18th Hole at Clearwater that has been the scene of many dramatic finishes in some of New Zealand’s great golf tournaments.
When you look around the country there are many other great holes to be considered. The 17th at Paraparaumu Beach, the 11th at Waitangi, the 16th at Gulf Harbour, and don’t forget the 10th at Terrace Downs or the Par 4, 5th hole at Queenstown Golf Club. What is also important for most golfers is which golf club has the best 19th Hole! Now I have seen a few in my day, not only in New Zealand but internationally. Some are where I have spent many hours solving the world’s problems and some are just a place I stop at when I play the golf course. Kauri Cliffs has my favourite for views; Balmacewan (Otago Golf Club) is my top for its history and definitely Balclutha for the banter and the best post-round food made by members. And don’t forget the heat generated from its cosy log burner! Just a reminder for your submissions, each golf course can have no more than one hole nominated and we are after the best holes in the North Island and the South Island, plus your favourite clubhouse. Your input is important so please get your friends and club involved.

NZ’s chances looking good for Asia-Pacific at Royal Wellington N
Curtis Luck, winner of the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in South Korea. The Australian also won the US Amateur earlier this year.
ew Zealand’s prospects for next year’s Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in Wellington look strong following last month’s event in South Korea. The Royal Wellington Golf Club will host next year’s Asia-Pacific Amateur, the world’s most televised amateur golf event, and anticipation has only been heightened with solid performances by the New Zealanders in South Korea. The tournament was dominated by the Australian pair of Curtis Luck and Brett Coletta but Luke Toomey from New Zealand was a creditable third. The other five New Zealanders all made the cut. Nick Voke was 11th at three over par for the four rounds, Daniel Hillier 15th at six over followed by Luke Brown (eight over), Nicholas Coxon
vietnam
(13 over) and Ryan Chisnall (16 over). Because New Zealand is the host next year it’s representation will increase from six to 10 players. Toomey, from Waikato, had the best score on the final day, carding a bogey-free six-under par 66 at the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club in Incheon. It took him to nine-under par for the tournament, just two behind the runner-up and three behind the winner. Toomey, 23, was delighted. “I’m just bloody stoked and it’s satisfying to know the hard work is starting to trend nicely,” Toomey said. “I came here with the intention to do something special but I probably didn’t make those birdies quick enough. I’m not going to think of the what-ifs, I’m just proud of what I did achieve today.”
Toomey’s finish matched Ben Campbell in 2011 as the best by a New Zealander in the tournament’s seven-year history. Campbell finished third behind Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama, now a top performer on the PGA Tour in the United States. The win of Luck in South Korea continued some outstanding international form. He was the second-top individual performer when Australia was a runaway winner of the Eisenhower Trophy in Mexico a fortnight earlier while Luck also won the US Amateur earlier in the year. Australian players have now won the championship twice to equal South Korea (2009, 2013), Japan (2010, 2011) and China (2012, 2015). Luck, 20, was seven behind Coletta at the start of the final day and had to shoot his

Dooley and Hunter winning combination at New Zealand Amateur Mixed Foursomes Championships
T
he 25th New Zealand Amateur Mixed Foursomes has finished in style with the defending 2015 champions making it ‘two-in-a-row’ to retain the coveted NZ Mixed Foursomes Salver. Grant Dooley (Huapai) and Claire Hunter (Pupuke) won their final today 5/4 against Simon and Anita Fraser (Riverton). In reaching the final, Dooley and Hunter had a tough fight in their opening match yesterday, only managing to secure the win after 22holes, and being 2 down through the opening 9 holes. Their first match of the day was against the 7th seeds, the local pairing of Andrew Aitkins and Nikki Shaw, who arguably ‘punched above their weight’ in the thrilling morning round. John Anderson (Omarama) and Rebecca Calder (Omakau) took Dooley and Hunter to the 15th hole before they secured that match, 4/3, in the Championship’s semi final match. The Fraser’s, seeded 8th by handicap, had a dream run yesterday with two well fought battles against the top seeds, Devon Headland and Fleur Reynolds (Muriwai), and then the strong, local pairing of Liz McRae and Ross Parry. The Fraser’s needed all 18 holes to win 1up and take a well-deserved place in the final this morning. In winning the 2016 New Zealand Amateur Mixed Foursomes back-toback, Dooley and Hunter join only one other pairing in completing such a feat. Anita Harkerss and Paul Bailey, both previous Canterbury representatives, won the title in 2010 and then again in 2011. Past winners of the Salver, have included Una Wickham, Kay Maxwell, Brenda Ormsby, Phil Aickin and Grant Waite. Plate winners in the Championship division were Chris and Meghan Blair (Remuera) with the two flights being won by Ross Parry and Liz McRae, along with Andrew Atkins and Nikki Shaw, all local Wanaka members. A record 96 players entered making 48 pairs and six divisions. The first division competed in a ‘gross foursomes’ match-play format with the other five divisions competing in handicap-foursomes match play. Such was the split, that many matches in divisions two to six were fought with only a handful of shots coming in play. Division two was won by Carrick Jones and Judy Muir, both life members

Flights were won by Steve Roy and Eleanor Newton (Chisholm Links) and Jeff Couch and Anne McKenzie, yet another Wanaka pairing. Lynne and Kurt Edmonds travelled from Matamata, in the North Island to compete in their second New Zealand Amateur Mixed Foursomes and were rewarded with the Division 3 title, winning 4/3 over Barry Wither (Titirangi) and Nan Johnston (Hamilton) in today’s final. Otago board members Murray Nyhon (Balclutha) and Mary-Anne Kane (Tapanui) won the 4th division over locals Jeff Niederer and Maree Rose, 5/4. 18 holes were needed by both the 5th and 6th division winners to secure their wins. Phil Selby and Pamela de Beer (Wanaka) bet fellow club members Michael Thompson and Kim Badger 1up. Same winning margin for Mike Robertson (Tapanui) partnered with Margaret Brookes from Mangawhai,
against Don Senior and Alison Waugh (Pupuke) in Division 6. Robertson and Brookes were paired by tournament organisers and only met in the opening round – a fortuitous introduction as it turned out. The Plate winners in divisions 4, 5 and 6 were Jacob Jones and Sonya George (Wanaka), Alex and Sheryll Johnson (Matamata) and Tony Brent and Chris Scott (Wanaka), respectively. The 2016 tournament was hosted by the Wanaka Golf Club, with stunning clear ‘Otago’ skies over the 2-day tournament, yet again. It was the 2nd time that Wanaka had hosted the tournament, which was supported by sponsors, Bosch, Neff, Gaggenau, TaylorMade – Adidas and Akarua Wines. The 2017 venue will be announced shortly by PaR nz Golfing Holidays who manage the championship on behalf of New Zealand Golf Inc. It is hoped, by many of the competitors, that it will return to Wanaka for the 3rd time; many prize-winners commenting on the ‘friendliness’ of the club along with the sportsmanship and camaraderie of the 2016 event. PaR nz Golfing Holidays have confirmed that it will be held again over the Labour Weekend, timed to back onto the 2017 Millbrook Masters in Arrowtown. »» »» »» »»

Plenty of room at the Shilton B
Brad Shilton
rad Shilton topped off his best payday as a golfer with a runaway victory in the Harewood Open in Christchurch. The Auckland professional had the previous week finished third to American Brandt Snedeker in the Fiji International which earned him $A71,000 ($NZ76,000). That was more than the total purse of $50,000 for the Harewood Open but Shilton was just happy to put a win on the board following an absence of seven years. “I’m stoked to win,’’ Shilton said after the win. “It’s been a long time between drinks so it was nice to get the job done today, even though it was a little scratchy at times.” The previous win for Shilton, 37, had come on his 30th birthday. In the Harewood Open he went into the final round
with a seven-shot lead and ended up winning by six. “It was a strange day having a big lead and just trying to hang on,’’ Shilton said. “I just wanted to be positive, but after four weeks of golf I think the mind just wandered a bit.” Any chance of a comeback didn’t last long as the chasing players failed to get going which allowed Shilton a stress-free final few holes. “Fortunately the boys didn’t get going which made it easier for me and meant there was not too much of a challenge from behind so it was a nice walk down 18.” Shilton finished the tournament, sponsored by John Jones Steel, at 16 under par with scores of 69, 66, 67 and 70. Josh Geary was the only player to take advantage of the benign conditions on

the final day and he did it in style breaking the course record with a nine-under 63, to soar into second place. Ironically he played alongside Fraser Wilkin who held the previous course record of 64. Rounding out the top three was Mark Brown who got a surprise when he found Geary had climbed his way into the runner-up position. Daniel Hillier, the winner of the tournament last year, finished 10th at four under par and was the leading amateur. In the women’s division of the Harewood Open, it was a similar display of dominance with Rose Zheng winning her first win on the Charles Tour, sponsored by Jennian Homes, after carding an incredible final round of seven-under par to win by seven shots.
Zheng was simply too good for the rest of the field finishing at 17-under par, while two-time defending champion, Chantelle Cassidy, in second place with a total of 10-under and first round leader Alanna Campbell finishing in third on seven-under. “It feels great, I have never felt like this before,” Zheng said. “I’ve never played this good in a tournament before, I’ve never been this far under par.” At the tender age of 14, she showed maturity beyond her years in what was an extremely consistent week for the Aucklander. “It was just about being consistent and waiting for birdies, I didn’t go searching and it paid off. I can’t describe how happy I am and hopefully it will keep going from here.”

NZ Golf’s role has grown substantially By Dean Murphy New Zealand Golf Chief Executive
N
ew Zealand Golf’s role as the National Sports Organisation for golf in New Zealand has changed considerably over the passage of time. While we were formed in 1910 and have a long and proud history, our role has significantly evolved and continues to do so. Historically the organisation had a purely amateur golf jurisdiction. But we now embrace a whole of golf responsibility as the leadership entity for the sport in New Zealand. The leadership role is a great responsibility and one which we take very seriously with the guidance and
support of the Royal & Ancient and Sport New Zealand. The leadership role comes with great diversity best demonstrated by our scope of operations. This ranges from working with clubs in the smallest regions in the country to overseeing the New Zealand Open Championships. From running the She Loves Golf marketing campaign to managing the campaigns of our golfers who competed at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Our whole of golf approach also encompasses work with a wide range of partners across the sector. We offer our sincere thanks to The PGA of New Zealand, NZ Golf Club Managers Association,
NZ Golf Course Superintendents Association, NZ Tourism, SNAG (Starting New at Golf), NZ Maori Golf Association, NZ Professional Women Golfers, Par NZ and The Eagles who all do tremendous jobs. We are particularly thankful that all of these partners are strongly aligned to our strategic plan. In a small country like ours, it is critical we are all working together and collectively striving to achieve the same things. To further strengthen our whole of golf approach, late last year we formed the New Zealand Golf Industry Council (NZGIC). The purpose of the NZGIC is to provide a forum to unite the industry on agreed industry wide initiatives. The con-
cept of the group is to share leadership of the sector by bringing together all key organisations in the golf industry (over 20) to work in a co-ordinated manner to grow, support and promote the game of golf. Initial progress with this group has been very pleasing and we are now looking at projects we can undertake as a sector for the benefit of all. The first two projects the group will tackle are providing quality information (and reporting) on the game plus defining the value of golf to NZ. We look forward to continuing our leadership work for the game with the support of so many great organisations and good people across the sector.

Enjoying golf this summer By Andrew Whiley A voice from the south
D
aylight saving is now here and we are enjoying longer days and warmer weather. Hopefully it will also be drier. So let’s get out and start playing more golf. A Swedish golf study, published a few years ago showed that “people of the same sex, age and socioeconomic status who play golf can expect a five-year increase in life expectancy compared to those who do not.’’ It continued: “The death rate amongst golfers by age is 40 percent lower than the rest of the population, which equates to an increased life expectancy of five years”. So why do we play golf? The challenge of the game, the people we play with or the environment we play in. All of these
are key reasons. What a great bonus, we may even live longer. My goal this summer is to play golf. And this is coming from a golf professional that has played the game for 36 years. When I worked at golf courses, I struggled to get motivated to play because when you leave work, where is the first place you would like to escape to? The golf course. So, if you work at the golf course where do you want to escape to? In my last five years working at the golf course I played less than 10 rounds per year. So yes, that puts me in the category of many club golfers that are struggling to justify their membership subscriptions. Unfortunately, you end up in what I call the “golf circle of death”. That is “the less I play, the worse I play and the less I want to play’’. Playing golf is a great way to get away from life, technology, cell phones and
go for a walk and catching up with some mates. Golf does not always have to be 18-holes but can be a pleasurable way to spend 90-minutes playing six or seven holes. But here is the secret to enjoy the game: play with only six or seven clubs, put a carry bag over your shoulder and just walk along. I hate to say the “old fashioned way” but it is a lot more relaxed that way. My personal goal this summer will be to play over 100 holes per month. This does not need to be 18-hole rounds but might be a series of smaller bursts of nine holes or only three or four holes, hitting a couple of balls in a quick one-hour hit and a walk around the course. The benefits I am looking for are taking the opportunity to spend more time
walking and talking to my friends and just enjoying the fresh air and getting away from the computer and phone. The benefit is that hopefully, I will feel fitter and healthier and will perhaps lose a little weight by the end of the summer. I also hope that my golf gets better and I anticipate I will have the desire to play the game more often. I do have an ulterior motive, as I would like to think that I can get my wife out to play. Talking about playing six holes, it is a lot easier to entice my wife than playing 18 holes. For a new golfer, that’s a simple equation of 90 minutes versus four hours. So my challenge to you is to get out and play more golf this summer and as a bonus can you introduce a friend to the game.

Arnold Palmer and his connection with New Zealand By Duncan Simpson New Zealand PGA Secretary
A
rnold Palmer’s passing in September was not only a huge blow to the golfing world at large, but also severed some long standing links with golf in this country, going back 50 years. In October 1966, Palmer arrived in New Zealand to play a four-round exhibition series (sponsored by Benson & Hedges) with Bob Charles at Balmacewan, Shirley, Miramar and Middlemore (Royal Auckland). Arnold was then at the height of his career as the greatest money winner in golfing history to that point, and although he was fated not to add to his haul of seven majors, he had amassed the impressive sum of $US90,000 in official prize money already that year by the time he landed here. Huge crowds turned out at each venue and by the time they reached Middlemore, Charles had a five shot lead which he built on further with a 72 to Palmer’s 75 in the final round, giving him overall victory by 282 to 290 over the series.
However, it was not his score which has stuck in the memory, but some of the golf played by Palmer in his typical do or die fashion. The famous Glen hole at Balmacewan plays today as a par four of around 350m. In 1966 it was of similar length, but there was a solid wall of gorse down the right hand side all the way to the green. Out of bounds lurked on the left. Palmer took all this on, drove the green and two putted for a famous birdie. Later he came to the short par four 17th, which Palmer effectively treated as a par three, smashing a five iron onto the green for a similar result. Of course feats like this were routine for Palmer, from the drive he flew to the first green at Cherry Hills in the 1960 US Open to ignite his last round charge to victory, to an astonishing feat of strength at the 1961 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale. Here his tee shot on the 15th finished virtually under a small gorse bush in the rough, 135m from the green with menacing cross bunkers between his ball and the flag.
Most commentators expected him to chip back to the fairway. Instead, Palmer gave it everything he had with a six iron, removing a good chunk of turf and the bush itself as the ball soared over the cross bunkers to the green. A plaque marks the spot to this day. Palmer was back in New Zealand in 1978 to play in the NZ Airlines Shell Open at Titirangi. He was paid a comparatively modest appearance fee, and part of the deal involved promoting some of the country’s tourist attractions, with Palmer using a mixture of NAC flights and a helicopter to get around. At some point he arrived at the Taihape Golf Club, where he played four holes, including the par three 12th, which he labelled as the “best natural par three in the world”. The club has been dining out on this ever since, and you can find further details on their website. Back in Auckland, the 48-year-old Palmer proved he could still be competitive, finishing third equal on 278 with 2015 World Golf Hall of Famer David Graham, behind Bob Charles who won with 273, just ahead
of Graeme Marsh. PGA records show that Palmer received a cheque for $3780, being $4725 less tax. He also picked up $22.50 in the Pro-Am teams event. In the 1980s, a New Plymouth Golf Club member had the bright idea of ringing Arnold to see if he would be prepared to donate a trophy for the club’s juniors. One of Palmer’s many putters resulted — one he had won several tournaments with — and it is still played for annually. Palmer has been rightly lauded for his part in bringing professional golf into the modern era, and making it into a sport with mass appeal. He recognised that golf had been good to him, and his way of giving back was to do his part in helping to grow the game around the world, not least in New Zealand. His example is in stark contrast to many of today’s stars and their priorities, even allowing for the many changes that have taken place in tournament golf since. Thank you Arnold Palmer for all you have done for the game, and special thanks from the New Zealand chapter of Arnie’s Army.

GOLFCOACHING By Anthony Barkley NZPGA Professional

hat are some of the secrets in gaining distance with your drives? We see on the PGA tour these players hitting the ball ridiculous distances. It’s not just one or two players like in the old days but almost every player on tour hits it long. I know we are not on the PGA tour but we can relate to this as there have been significant gains in technology and technique from balls to drivers to how the swing is taught. I will outline reasons why you may be losing distance and some remedies for you to think about. INJURIES: One of the first considerations we have to make is how our body is currently. Bad backs, hips, knees, shoulders etc will have a direct effect on your body’s ability to hit a shot with power. Often what happens is other weaker muscles will try and compensate for the injured area. An example is if you have a bad back, the body likely will shut down its rotation meaning the arms swing faster to compensate which equals less distance(likely more slice). It’s like a chain reaction of events. Muscle tightness will also reduce our ability to generate club head speed. Remedy: Get your body looked at and get treatment if you want to get some

Where has my distance gone? distance back. It’s very hard to make a change in the swing by your local PGA pro if your body can’t get that position due to body issues. A pro can work around an injury to make it more consistent but it’s natural to lose distance through the bodies inability to do what it used to do. SHAFTS: Shafts have improved tremendously over the years in quality and performance. Match this with the new heads and you may be onto a winner. As part of a fitting the flex could also be beneficial. The truth is that if you have played with a stiff shaft for 20 years, it may be worth booking yourself into a fitting to see if you will get more distance and consistency with a regular shaft. The good thing with most companies is that they have brought the length of the shafts down to a more manageable length for the average golfer. They got so long there for a while that it became very hard to create consistency. Now, it’s about developing ways to alter the performance through weight distribution, material developments and aerodynamics combined with correct shaft matching. Remedy: Get fitted and have an open mind
HEADS: Technology is improving head aerodynamics and make up constantly. We see improvements in club head speed through these changes on the Flightscope. This means more potential distance for the golfer. If you are using an older model its worth trying a new generation driver. Remedy: Trial some of the new models. TECHNIQUE: Hate to say, but it could be how you are swinging it. Generally players will start to force it trying to get the ball further down the fairway (or past their mates). This doesn’t work as the harder you try, the worse it will get. As I have said above, technique can be heavily affected by injury but if this is not an issue then a close look at your rotation, hinge, rhythm and the correct swing sequencing could make a big difference. You are bound to have noticed how some players seem to swing it very easy but hit it very far. This is sequencing at its best where the club is in the right place at the right time in the swing. We can all do this with some help from your local PGA professional but it will take some work. It is always good to get a check up on
November 2016
the basics like ball position, grip, weight distribution and alignment to ensure these simple but very important aspects are not causing any issues. Remedy: Consult with a NZPGA professional on the best way forward for you. BALLS: The last aspect is the type of ball a player uses. Ball types are related to club head speed so the slower the speed of the swing the lower the compression should be of a ball. There are some great balls on the market now including the Bridgestone models. Remedy: Get ball fitted through a Flightscope. I have talked a lot about fittings in this article as through my experience if you trial a club without data it’s hard to see actual benefits. It may appear to go longer or shorter but until your get non biased data you won’t actually be able to tell accurately. I hope this gives you some information to think about when sitting back trying to work out why you don’t hit it as far as you used to. The good news is that there is hope. Why Nike and Adidas are hanging up their golf clubs Story BBC News
GOLF NEWS
T
he sport of golf has received a huge boost in exposure by featuring in the 2016 Rio Games - making its return to the Olympics after 112 years. In addition there are drives to further the development of the game in Asia, while in Europe, including the UK, action is being taken to introduce the sport to a new playing demographic, including women and children. But in the US, the number of golf players has declined from 30 million in 2005 to roughly 24 million last year, and that has provided a problem for major equipment manufacturers, as the nation accounts for half of all players and courses in the world. So it may come as no surprise that within the past few months’ sports equipment giants Nike andAdidas have announced that they are looking to exit their golf club businesses. Although interestingly both are going to remain in the golf footwear and clothing markets. Declining participation numbers in the game’s biggest market means that other sports such as athletics and basketball offer more attractive opportunities for sales growth. As general sports goods providers
covering a plethora of sports, Nike and Adidas were also latecomers to what is a specialised field - one already occupied by established brands such as Ping and Titleist. “Golf is a relatively mature market but with an increasing number of competing suppliers,” says Simon Chadwick, professor of sports enterprise at the University of Salford. “At best, we have to say that the US golf market is static, while at the same time we have seen traditional golf markets across North America and Europe being hit by the rise of cycling,” says Prof Chadwick. Indeed, he says that some social commentators have identified cycling as “the new golf” for middle-aged men. Prof Chadwick adds: “There is some growth in the golf market elsewhere in the world, notably in East Asia, but this market is increasingly being served by domestic suppliers. “It’s a tough operating environment right now for an American golf business.” Nike has been in the golfing market for 17 years, and has a high-profile stable of golfers, including Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Michelle Wie. It launched golf balls in 1999, with Woods starting to use their new sol-

id-core Nike Tour Accuracy ball the following year. The US firm says it will refocus its efforts on golf shoes and clothing (indeed it says it wants to be the “undisputed leader” in these fields), and away from clubs, balls and bags. “The turnover of business is greater when it comes to shoes, but there are also likely to be spin-off benefits for one of Nike’s core businesses, i.e. footwear,” says Prof Chadwick. “That is, what they learn in golf could well positively impact upon athletics, football and so forth, and vice versa. You could call it knowledge transfer across business units.” Like Nike, Adidas hopes to sell the bulk of its golf business to concentrate on its own-brand golf shoes and clothing. The company launched a review of its golf business last August, and wants to sell its brands TaylorMade and Adams, which make golf clubs and other equipment, and also the Ashworth golf shoes and clothing brand. Players that are equipped by the firm include men’s current world number one Jason Day, who uses TaylorMade clubs and wears Adidas golf shoes and clothing. Meanwhile, newly crowned Olympic champion Justin Rose also
wears Adidas golf clothing. Adidas has been in the sport since 1997, when it bought TaylorMade as part of a $1.4bn (£1bn) acquisition of French skiing label Salomon. “The likes of Adidas will look towards cash cows like running and football rather than be stuck with problem children like their array of golf products,” says Prof Chadwick. “Adidas’s cash cows are easier to manage and yield a greater return than slow-moving golf products that have failed to make a major market breakthrough.” However, despite the seemingly gloomy outlook, Nick Oakley, an expert at KPMG’s sport industry group, believes these industry changes also offer opportunities. He says there is now a chance for the golf industry to move away from a golfing “supermarket” approach, and back to a more crafted and traditional “green grass” environment. Such an environment, he says, would be driven by qualified and trained PGA professionals, able to provide a specialist and customised service, and also supported by brands whose core business is golf. The New Zealand Golf industry were unavailable for comment.

Course Classic LOCATED on the southwest edge of Tauranga City on the Racecourse Reserve and 10 minutes from the city centre, the Tauranga Golf Course offers a secluded and peaceful setting for golfers of all ages and ability. Only a two-hour drive from Auckland and a short trip from Rotorua and Hamilton, enhances the popularity of Tauranga as a golfing destination for visiting golfers from NZ & abroad. With a varied and undulating terrain, the Tauranga course has earned the respect of top amateurs and professionals alike as an exacting test of shot
ESTABLISHED in 1971, the Omanu Golf Club offers a great golfing experience to its members and visitors alike. The golf course itself is of a very high standard and would best be described as parkland. The fairways are irrigated, mostly flat with some slight undulation and the rough is cut to a consistent length which provides a challenge for the better golfer but remains playable for all levels. It’s not just about the Golf at Omanu - the Club offers modern facilities including a Proshop , Café and Bar which all open 7 days per week. You will be wel-
placement and concentration. The course has interesting topography and variation in holes (it has been described as two courses in one) and its fairways and sand based greens are in beautiful condition as a result of permanent irrigation systems. The Tauranga Golf Course has an area of approximately 45 hectares, and is a Par 71 measuring 5571m from the back tees. With PGA Professional Jay Carter and a fully stocked Pro Shop onsite, Tauranga Golf Club is fast becoming the home for up and coming amateur golfers.
OMANU GOLF CLUB
OMOKOROA GOLF CLUB is situated on a small peninsula on the Tauranga Harbour. It is a very flat course built on the harbours edge, and our 3rd and 5th fairways are below sea level. We have 5 different tees, so can cater for golfers of all abilities. And even though we are only 20 mins north of Tauranga, and 15 south of Katikati, we are a friendly country course that is so quiet, you can often only hear the birds and the waves lapping on the shore. In August 2011 we hosted the NZ Mens U19 Champs and there were only 10 rounds under par, out of over 300, which shows the
challenge the course can offer from its back tees. Our course has produced many great golfers over the years from NZ reps, Jan Higgins, Stephen Scahill and Andrew Stewart to current touring professional Kieran Muir. So make sure you get out soon to enjoy this hidden gem. You’ll find Omokoroa Golf Club on Links View Drive, which from the State Highway 2, turn onto Omokoroa Rd, onto Kaylene Place and onto Links View Drive. GOLF TRAILS
NEWS FROM AROUND THE REGIONS
NORTHLAND GOLF: NORTHLAND SETTLE FOR THIRD IN GARRARD SHIELD By Northern Advocate
Northland, Auckland, Waikato and Bay of Plenty golfers converged on the Grange Golf Course as Auckland played host to the annual quadrangular matchplay competition. Twelve players from each district attended the event with the Garrard Shield side consisting of eight men and the Ralph Cup consisting of four under-19 players. Players were met with rain and wind on Saturday as Northland matched up against Auckland for the first round. Northland number one Christian Nitsche was only three holes into his tie
when play was suspended because of flooded greens. However, the delay failed to dampen players’ efforts as both districts walked away with honours as Northland won the Garrard Shield match 5.5 to 2.5, while Auckland won the Ralph Cup match 4-0. Unfortunately the script wasn’t followed and Northland went down in a tight battle 4.5-3.5 while the juniors bounced back to record a 2-all draw. Waikato continued their winning ways in the afternoon, taking Auckland apart and placing themselves in a dominant position moving into Sunday’s final round against Northland. This match-up would determine the winner of the Garrard Shield. Northland needed to beat Waikato 5.52.5 to claim the title after their narrow loss to Bay of Plenty.
Waikato were in fine form during their final round with their side boosted by Nick Coxon, back from representing NZ at the Asia Pacific Championship in Korea. The Northland side fought hard right to the end but went down 5-3 to leave Waikato unbeaten over the weekend and ready to lift the prestigious Garrard Shield, stopping Bay of Plenty from completing a record winning streak. The Northland juniors continued to fight hard over the weekend but went down against Waikato in their final match 2.5-1.5. This was the last representative fixture for 2016 for the juniors and the last official representative match for the senior men before they head to the Interprovincial tournament in Taranaki at the end of November. The senior side was selected and announced on Sunday. The makeup of the team is Luke Brown (The Pines), Christian Nitsche (Whangarei), Sheldon Kearns (Northland), Taylor Gill (BOI Kerikeri), Alex Neely (BOI Kerikeri), and Brad Bonnington (Wellsford).

er they can still be very proud of their performance and once again show the fantastic depth we have with junior golf, both boys and girls. The junior girls finished 5th out of the 9 teams in the Junior Girls Interprovincial held in Rotorua in early October. It was a great experience for some of the new comers to the team and it was very pleasing to see North Harbour’s No. 1 women’s player Ela Grimwood recording 4 wins in her 5 matches. Well done girls and also a special thank you to both teams managers Rangi Lemon, George Newlove and Glenda O’Connor who donate their time tirelessly to promote and manage junior golf teams in the district.

2016 JUNIOR INTERPROVINCIALS
The junior boys interprovincial team finished 2nd out of the 10 teams in Cambridge in late September. Unbeaten in pool play with some fantastic results including a must win 8-0 win over Bay of Plenty to reach the final, the boys squared off against local team Waikato in the final. It was a case of what might have been as the boys would lose narrowly by a score of 4.5 / 3.5. It was a tough loss for the lads who have now finished runner up at the event three times since 2010 when North Harbour last won the competition. Howev-
With a few of the top players unavailable it was a chance for some players first taste of top grade representative and they would respond fantastically with North Harbour winning the Quadrangular in Blenheim for the second consecutive year. Wins over Wellington and Canterbury on the first day meant the 8 strong team would face off in a winner takes all on Sunday with Tasman. The final match was very close but in the end North Harbour would record a 4.5 / 3/5 win to take home the silverware. Congratulations to the team and thank you to managers Peter Reid and Len Bilton. Yet another successful representative performance for the district in 2016!

The winners of the Primary School Championships were Joshua Bai from Epson Normal with a gross score of 73 and Eunseo Choi from Bayview Primary also with a score of 73. The winners of the Intermediate School Championships were Henry Wang from Farm Cove Intermediate with a gross score of 73 and An Ann from Murrays Bay Intermediate with a score of 77. North Harbour’s Junior Golf Coordinator Pam Greenhalgh was amazed at the high level and the number of very talented golfers that were out playing this event. This is a great sign for the future of golf and a good reward for many of the golf clubs and golf Professionals in the Harbour Area who have been supporting Junior Golf. The Takapuna Golf Course was a superb venue for this tournament and a great place to learn and play golf. AUCKLAND AUCKLAND WIN DUNES QUADRANGULAR
The Auckland women’s team have defended their Dunes Quadrangular title with a clean sweep of victories over Taranaki, Bay of Plenty and Waikato. It was a hard fought win over hosts Taranaki in the first round with Auckland just prevailing 4.5 matches to 3.5 matches with the outcome decided on the last hole. In the second round against Bay of Plenty it was similarly close with Auckland finally overcoming the challenge to win by 5 matches to 3. The final round against Waikato was a dominant 8 to nil victory with only unbeaten Chloe Maguire going to the wire and winning. It was a great victory given that three leading players were in Christchurc at the Harewood Open.
HUNTLY AND PAKURANGA FAVOURED TO WIN COVIC FINALS
The COVIC Golf Premiership Shield and Championship Plate finals will be played at Maramarua Golf Club on Wednesday 9th November. Last week in the penultimate round of play at Pakuranga Golf Club, fine but soft going saw 78-players represent their clubs in team pennants competition. Pakuranga used their home course advantage to win the round and remain firm favourites to defend the COVIC Championship Plate. Waiuku are the only other team with a chance of beat-
ing them but need to win the final round and hope Pakuranga blow up with a sixth place to earn a right for a sudden death one player shoot-out. Pukekohe are only three points behind Waiuku and will be chasing them for the runner up spot, while Manukau, Wattle Downs and Onewhero, each separated by 1-point, will be trying to avoid the honour of being the 2016 wooden spoon holders. In the Premiership Shield Competition Waikare may have won the round with their 140-point team score, however, it is the ever consistent Huntly who did enough by drawing second with Maramarua to attain an unbeatable position with a six points lead over the second placed Clarks Beach. They had a shocker with only fifth place and moved out to 119-points, just 1-point ahead of Maramarua with Waikare 1-point further back in fourth. While these clubs can no longer win the Shield the battle is on for runner up spot. Hauraki will need results to go their way to move up the table and Awhitu are now too far back to avoid finishing sixth and last in the Premiership. Considering the size of this club, just making the top division this year to have been a victory in itself. As a result of a very wet and late spring the need for a ‘no-carts’ policy at Pakuranga meant Awhitu barely summoned a team to defend the COVIC Challenge Cup against a well-organised Clark’s Beach team, who eventually took the Cup by a close 37-½ to 34-½ margin. They will need to defend it against Ma-
nukau at Maramarua. Should Manukau win it will be the first trophy to be held at their new Windross Farm course. Craig Smith Pukekohe Golf Shop’s Player of the Day was Blake Robin of Waikare who received the Claret Jacket for his excellent five under 67 Net score. It proved to be a good fit so we may not get it back! Following the final round of pennants play, COVIC players will play a season ending COVIC Championship event at Hauraki on Wednesday 23rd November 2016, for Gold, Silver and Bronze individual awards in two-divisions.
WAIKATO HUNTLY AND PAKURANGA STILL LEAD COVIC FINALS
Last month Counties-Manukau Veterans golfers played their fourth of six final rounds, held at Huntly Golf Club on Wednesday 5th October. In dry but difficult windy conditions 72-players represented their clubs in team pennants competition. The Awhitu match-play team, who had surprised in the previous round by capturing the COVIC Challenge CUP, were successful in defending it against Wattle Downs 38.5 to 33.5. In the Premier Shield division Huntly used their home-course advantage to dominate the round with 151 stableford team points, 24 ahead of the next best Maramarua team on 127. Hauraki were 2-points back in third and Clarks Beach another 2-points back in fourth. With two

rounds left to play Huntly now hold a 3-point table lead over Clarks Beach with Maramarua 4-points back and still a possible chance of winning the COVIC Shield. In the Plate division defending champs Pakuranga won the day with 130-stableford points to stretch their table lead to 4-points over Waiuku who finished third on the day with 119-points. Pukekohe’s 12-point second place sees them remain third overall but just 1-point behind Waiuku.

JUNIOR PROGRAMMES TAKE OFF
Both Raglan Golf Club and Hukanui
Golf Club had the 1st session of their Term 4 Junior Programmes with a total combined number participants of 64. After some in-school taster sessions and a well-run Holiday Programme, (which attracted 58 children) the Raglan Golf Club had 24 children register for their programme. Since the Holiday programme the club has had a further 15 participants register for an incredible 39 participants turning up to the first session on Wednesday 19th October. The club see the juniors as an extremely important part of the clubs future, and have decided that all participants will receive a junior membership to the club. The club see that by bringing the students into the club right from the beginning will expose them to the golfing culture at the club. Furthermore, the club has received a number of parents purchasing adult memberships at the club. A real family type atmosphere is being created where parents, sons and daughters can participate in a fun relaxing game. The Raglan Junior Programme will run for 6 weeks with the intention to carry this through into Term 1 of 2017. The Hukanui Golf Club has had an amazing response from the local community also. After a number of in-school taster sessions, the club in association with Waikato Golf have enrolled 25 new golfers into their after school programme. With the help of some amazing volunteers (10 in total) the programme is going to be a huge success. A small fee of $20 is all it takes to be a part of the
programme with this cost being credited to your junior membership if indeed you wish to become a member. This is a great initiative and a positive way to let the children experience the game in a fun manor before making the commitment to be a member. The membership entitles all players full access to facilities on any given day as well as the opportunity to play a round on the weekends. The Hukanui Junior Programme will run for 6 weeks with the intention to carry this through to Term 1 of 2017. For more information on Junior Golf at your club, please contact Jason Boobyer (Jason@waikatogolf.co.nz).

On the final day, the boys played Northland, where Cameron Leigh would secure a point, Jono Blair went down to Ben Bowmar, while Sam Brinkworth went the distance recording a 1up win and Joshua Stevens with a half point. A good win for the boys 2.5-1.5. Defending Champions Auckland would come out on top with 2.5 match points, Waikato placed second with 2 match points. A very impressive display by these boys, invaluable experience gained moving forward into future events. Well done boys.

against to secure the all-important half point against Tyla Winter. The other match on the Saturday morning saw Bay of Plenty and Waikato finish 4-4. Taranaki’s afternoon match against Waikato looked like it might slip away from them with loses in the first three matches on the course. However, a win to Melanie Wilson, playing at No 5, and wins to the top three players Celeste McLean, Tyla Winter and Rochelle Keegan gave the home side a 4-4 half. Auckland made it two from two in the afternoon with a 5-3 win against Bay of Plenty. Sunday’s matches saw Auckland clinch the Dunes trophy with a 8-0 thumping of Waikato while Taranaki had a hard fought battle against Bay of Plenty with three of the matches not decided until the final hole to record another halved match. That meant Taranaki, Bay of Plenty and Waikato all finished on 2 points, with Taranaki claiming second spot by virtue of them having won more singles matches. The results over the weekend will no doubt have provided the team with a great deal of heart leading into the upcoming women’s interprovincials which will be played at Westown in December. *Stratford Golf Club recently completed its men’s match play championships. In the senior division, Tony Cawley won another title when he comfortably beat Grant Kite 9/7. The intermediates title
went to Brad Gibbons who just got up over Steve Ngataierua 1up. The juniors were won by Graham Kelly winning 3/2 against Chris Merson while Chris Drummond beat David Banham 1up to claim the Roy Willis Trophy. *Inglewood’s Wayne O’Donnell secured a hole in one on his home course last week using a five iron on the 151m par three 10th. His tee shot just made the left edge of the green before rolling around to the right before dropping straight into the hole. *A number of Taranaki golfers made the trip south last weekend to play in the Manawatu Open at the Manawatu Golf Club. In a field of 80 men, the best results from Taranaki golfers came from Ben Joseph (81-71-152) and Andrew Searle (77-75-152) who finished in a tie for ninth place. New Plymouth’s Mark Kennard (74-79153) was a stroke further back in 11th spot. The winner was Ewan Westergaard (73-73-146) from the Manawatu Golf Club.

CHOICE LOOMS NEXT YEAR FOR DUAL SPORTSMAN By Hawkes Bay today
There will come a day when Hawke’s Bay youngster Zack Swanwick has to choose between his two favourite codes of rugby and golf. The Taradale Primary School Year 6 10-year-old is already prepared. “Golf will be the priority because I want to be a professional. “I haven’t thought about a career outside of those two sports. I will live the dream first and worry about that after the body falls apart.” The Napier Old Boys Marist 10th grade No8 has been a busy lad in both codes in recent weeks. He has also had to get some repairs on the body. Swanwick, a son of former Black Sox softball pitcher Vincent Swanwick, helped his school rugby team win the rugby section of the Spooner Shield tournament with an unbeaten run. Taradale Primary also won the shield which is the symbol of winter sports supremacy for schools within the Taradale district.

This was a close contest between the current Man/Wang number 1 and 2 rep players, with Regan Cording beating Junior Tatana by just 2.5 points. Despite recording no points at the first event, the Horowhenua Open, Cording had a second at Wanganui, and a win at the Challenge Cup, to propel him up the rankings. Although not playing his best golf at Manawatu, he did just enough to stay ahead of Tatana. Tatana however will rue a costly scorecard mistake at the Wanganui Open, which led to him disqualifying himself following the event once the mistake was realised. This meant he received no points from that event. Manawatu Wanganui golf however commend him for declaring the mistake, as this is a great example of what playing golf is about. He showed great integrity, and we hope others will learn from this example. In third place was Tane North, who won the Wanganui Open outright after Tatana’s disqualification. In 4th was Ewan Westergaard, the Manawatu Open winner, who only competed in the final 2 events.

WELLINGTON 2016/17 JOHN DURRY SALVER KICKS OFF INTERCLUB SEASON
The John Durry Salver, now in to its 3rd successful season has got the 2017 Interclub season underway albeit that the competition spans the months from September 2016 till April 2017. Instigated by PBGC and named after Paraparumu’s late John Durry, the winner of the NZ Amateur an impressive 4 times in 1963, 65, 67 and finally in 1979 at his home course. JD also won the Bledisloe Cup for low amateur at the NZ Open in 61 and 66, five National Foursomes titles including in 1959 with Bob Charles, numerous Club Open’s and events around NZ and abroad and had a long tenure in NZ Rep teams. After this stellar playing career John went on to have a long time involvement within the then WGA. The competition is played between PBGC, RWGC, BFHGC and Miramar by teams of 8 men who are eligible by having a handicap between 5 and 15 and are over the age of 50. A great initiative using course capacity mid week and offering a further competition to support the need for competitive golf within different segments of our golfing landscape.

GOLF HUB MARLBOROUGH OPENS AT MARLBOROUGH GOLF CLUB
A Marlborough man who lives for golf has moved his sporting business from Blenheim out to a golf course in Fairhall. NZPGA professional golfer Jonti Philipson has run a golfing retail business for the past six years, most recently from premises in Alfred St, in Blenheim. The store was formerly called Sharpies Golf Marlborough, but it has a new name and a new location, based out of the Marlborough Golf Club building, in Fairhall. The idea behind the new name, Golf Hub Marlborough, was to create an environment where people could come and talk about the sport in a golfing environment, Philipson said. He was approached by the club and given space in the building lease-free, in exchange for looking after the clubhouse and selling green fees. “It was a lifesaver to be honest,” he said. When the store was in town, Philipson said there had been a lot of support from the other clubs, and he hoped he could keep that despite being based in Fairhall. “There’s no money in selling golfing gear here, it’s more about the love of the game with me, which is why it’s so important to keep the other clubs on board,” he said. To do this he planned on starting an online store, as well as doing a monthly roadshow to the other clubs to sell his wares. The professional golfer, who recently travelled to Vanuatu to compete, also supplemented his income by coaching, and offering lessons to school children. Philipson said New Zealand had one of the highest per capita rates of golf courses in the world, and Marlborough was no exception with six clubs and about 2000 members.

Drivers were his hotest-selling item, with high-end models selling for about $900. “People love hitting the ball as far as they possibly can, it’s the least used item in the bag but it’s also the most expensive,” he said. The store, which opened on Wednesday, would also start selling coffee, along with gear, club.
CANTERBURY LINCOLN MAKE IT A DOUBLE WITH JUNIOR FOURSOMES INTERCLUB TITLE
The final round of Junior Foursomes Interclub was played at Russley last month in calm, sunny conditions with some great scoring to match. Lincoln continued their dominance in Junior Interclub this year adding the Junior Interclub Foursomes title to the Junior Interclub Matchplay title they won earlier in the year. Lincoln finished 1st with a final points total of 319 over the four rounds with Kaiapoi Blue 2nd on 300 points and Russley White finishing strongly on their home course with the best score of the day, 94 points to finish 3rd on 299.
CANTERBURY MEN FINISH SECOND AT QUADRANGULAR
The annual Men’s Quadrangular fixture was held at the Rarangi Golf Club last month. This event is an important representative event on the Canterbury Golf
calendar as we progress closer to the NZ Men’s Toro Interprovincial which will be played at the end of November. The Fenix Pitchfix Canterbury Men’s Team pictured from left are Hiroki Miya (Russley), Dominic Brettkelly (Hororata), Marcel Boet (Christchurch), Richard Reed (Avondale), Andrew Green (Pegasus), Daniel Laughton (Templeton), Reid Hilton (Russley), and Tom Parker (Christchurch). Ian Donaldson was able to step in as Manager for the event, “I was really impressed with the performance of the team, the players never gave up and worked well together. It’s an exciting time as we have new players in the team representing Canterbury in the senior ranks”. The Canterbury team beat Tasman 7-1 in the opening game and then had a close tussle with North Harbour which they narrowly lost 5-3. In the match against Wellington the Canterbury team performed well to get the win 5-3. The team are pictured with the salver they retained after beating Wellington which is played for between the two provinces during the Quadrangular. Overall the Canterbury team finished second behind North Harbour who won all three matches.

MIYA AND HUNG WIN AT CANTERBURY MATCHPLAY
Hiroki Miya and Juliana Hung won the men’s and women’s championships at the 2016 Golf Warehouse Canterbury Matchplay completed at Coringa Golf Club played last month. 16 year old Miya won the title for the first time, while Hung followed up her win in 2014. Miya had a good tussle with Tom Wilson and went through the turn 1up. Apart from missing a couple of putts, Miya played the steadier golf throughout. They were all square after 13 holes, but Miya won the 15th, and sunk a crucial six foot par-saver on the 16th for a half. When Wilson pulled his drive into the rough on 16 and lost his ball, Miya went to the 17th hole 2up. He hit a superb iron to six feet on the 193 metre par 3 17th and completed his 3/1 win with a conceded birdie. Miya has been a golfing talent from an early age, and his break through into the open ranks bodes well for the future. Wilson also had a good tournament, following up some very good form through Woodward Cup. The women’s championship was close for the first nine holes with Juliana Hung taking a 1up lead through the turn. From there she won consecutive holes and by the 14th had a 4up lead. Hillary O’Con-

nor had a cold day with the putter, while Hung’s short game was superb. The 14th hole showcased this when on the par 5 O’Connor had a six footer for eagle. Hung hit an 80 metre pitch shot to two feet for a birdie, and ended up halving the hole when O’Connor missed her eagle opportunity. The match was over on the 15th 4/3. In the men’s masters, Blair Dibley had a battle on his hands throughout against Paul Bailey. By hole 8 he had ecked out a 1up lead and crucially won hole 9 to go through the turn 2up. However Bailey would not go away and it took until the 17th hole for Dibley to finally get the ascendency and win 2/1. The Canterbury Rep Selectors have a conundrum on their hands to select the Freyberg Masters team to be named this week. The incumbents didn’t really flatter through the tournament except for Dibley who will surely be named in the team. The women’s masters was won by Cherl Kemp after a ding-dong batlle that was only won on the 18th hole. There was never more that one hole in it and they went down 18 all square with Kemp prevailing after Chris Marple had bunker trouble. In the Div 2’s, Catherine Bell (women’s), Richard Reed (men’s), and John Rademakers (men’s masters) were the winners.

OTAGO WOMEN WIN 2016 SALISBURY CUP
The Otago women’s golf team broke a six-year drought by beating Southland at Balmacewen last month to win the Salisbury Cup for the annual match between the two teams. Otago last won the cup in 2010, when the event was also played on the hilly Otago Golf Club course. The host team took advantage of local knowledge and took a tidy lead at lunch with five wins and one half from the eight reverse singles games. However, the Southland octet retaliated in the afternoon, posting four wins and two halves to almost make up the morning deficit. The 8 to 7 win was a boost for the Otago team leading into the South Island teams event to be held at Russley on November 5-6. For Otago, No1 Abigael Crawford emerged unbeaten with two halves and Rachel Lissaman had one win and one half. But the Otago tail duo were the heroes of the day: Kate O’Connell (Ardleigh) and Becs Calder (Omakau) won both of their games. For Southland, Olivia Frost had two wins and Robyn Pullar and Jody Drysdale had a win and a half each. In the afternoon battle between the No1 players, Crawford and Angela Gerken had a seesaw match in which Gerken was three ahead after the infamous Glen hole.

Crawford won 12, 13, 14 and 15 to take the lead but Gerken sank a lengthy birdie putt on the final green to snatch the half. Annabel Evans (No2) won her morning match but struck Robyn Pullar, who played the last four holes three under par to give Southland a 4 and 2 win. At No3, Danielle Bailey had an impressive win in the morning at the expense of Helen Baird but she lost to Olivia Frost on the final green after being penalised for a bunker infraction. In the afternoon, Otago was struggling to get the required three games in, even after the tail pair posted good wins. A long cross-green lag putt on the final green by Lissaman all but went in and she grabbed the deciding half when Drysdale three putted.

T’S been a very busy Winter & Spring with our golf tournaments and various tours!
BULLDOZERS MOVE IN AT NATADOLA BAY
The golf course at Natadola Bay is about to undergo a major redesign, to make it a bit (lot) more user friendly. VJ Singh has the scalpel out with changes to be made to 14 holes. The 6-million-dollar renovation with mean only 9 holes will be playable until approximately August next year. This will impact on a number of events on the Fiji golfing calendar over the next 10 months, including an event we run the Sheraton Golf Classic (South Pacific’s biggest proam event). For 2017 the tournament will have all 4 rounds played at the Denarau Golf & racquet Club. There will be over $130,000 in professional prize money and amateur prizes.
HAWAII – ALOHA
We had a great group of people travel with us to Hawaii at the end of August for our annual tour and I would like to thank all 87 people who made the trip. From the comments we have received it definitely lived up to everyone’s expectations. Full on golf the first week for the Hawaii International Golf Week tournament at the spectacular golf courses on the Big Island followed by the hustle and bustle of Maui for 5 days at the end with far too much drinking, eating and shopping. I must say it’s pretty hard to find a better place in the world to play golf and stay in top notch hotels on the beach.
Hawaii 2017 information is now available on our web site, for next year’s Hawaii golfing adventure, same format as this year for the first week, with a practice round and professional coaching on
Golf Tours around the Pacific
day one, followed by the 4 round tournament. Next year we will head back to Waikiki for 4 nights after the tournament with accommodation at the Hilton Hawaiian Village and some more golf. We have two packages, Hawaii International Golf week, for those people that can only get away for 8 days and just play the tournament, 5 rounds of golf. Secondly the Best of Hawaii Golf tour, (12 days) which is the same as above then extends onto Oahu “Waikiki” for a bit of R & R and of course more golf.
FIJI 2017
The Starwood Golf Classic is an event that has been running in Fiji for the past 6 years. Next year will see a name change and the tournament will be called the Sheraton Golf Classic. Next year’s event will be limited to 40 overseas teams of one professional and 3 amateurs. There will be $100,000 prize money for the pro’s and $30,000 amateur prizes. This event is great value for money and sells out every year, for those people who don’t have a team and wish to enter as individuals, we can put you into a team, so be quick with space for only 40 overseas teams for the next event. However; there are very few exotic destinations that offer “4 world class golf courses” designed by the best in the business, luxury 5 star beach front accommodation, amazing food and all in an area bursting with culture and history with 3 UNESCO world heritage sites near by. This is an opportunity to join us for a week in Da Nang on the central coast (China Beach) of Vietnam and play in the inaugural International Golf Week tournament. After the tournament you may wish to go to places like Ho Chi Minh City Hanoi or spend a few more days in Da Nang. There are numerous activities for the non golfers in the Da Nang, Hoi An area.
