What makes a good player become a great player?
I
By Paul Gueorgieff Editor, Golfer Pacific NZ
t’s that age-old question. What makes a good player great? I have pondered this question a few times recently. One was following the win of a 16-year-old in my local club’s senior championship. It was the third time a 16-year-old had won the club’s main championship and it’s hard not to ask yourself: How far will this lad go? I’m sure all of us have seen a bright, young sport star appear on the horizon only for that star to fade just as quickly as it arrived. Often the blame is placed on girlfriends, alcohol and having to work. But virtually every top golfer has a girlfriend or wife, probably likes a drink or two and knows nothing but hard work. I understand having to hold down a full-time job and play
golf at a higher level is probably impossible but that’s the point where choices have to be made. A club champion will probably go on to represent his region. He soon finds out there are dozens of players as good himself. Is it a bridge too far? Then the good regional player tries his hand at national level. Once again there are dozens of very good national players. Is it a bridge too far? Then the good national player moves to the international scene. Once again he finds there are hundreds of very good international players. Is it a bridge too far? And we haven’t even got to the great players, which is massive bridge to cross. I watched some of the action at the New Zealand Amateur in Wellington last month and was most impressed at what I saw. I
watched Peter Spearman-Burn, Jonathan Cane and Shaun Campbell. All hit the ball magnificently, chipped well and putted well. But none of them won. That honour went to a 15-yearold from Brisbane by the name of Louis Dobbelaar. I had not heard of him previously and I’m sure that would have been the case for many Australians. Three of his wins were achieved in extra holes and it made me wonder: How far will this lad go? Was he just lucky or was this a sign of a good player who could become great? An example of greatness came at the Australian Open last month. Jordan Spieth ran out the winner but he never really looked like succeeding until the first playoff hole. Spieth was four shots behind the leader after the seventh hole in the final round and many
would have said a win was unlikely. But win he did, despite playing below his best. He missed greens but made great up and downs and sunk putts. One of those beaten in the playoff, Cameron Smith from Australia, summed up Spieth’s play. “I think he’s shown everyone why he’s one of the best players in the world,’’ Smith said. I asked former New Zealand Open winner Matthew Lane what’s the difference between a good player and a great player. He had not hesitation in answering intensity. That’s just not intensity in the way they play but intensity in the way they practice. They just don’t practice for the sake of it. They practice with purpose. Pretty good advice, I would say, for a good player.

Boy from Brisbane becomes youngest winner of NZ Amateur GOLF NEWS
T
he trophy will show Louis Dobbelaar as the winner of the New Zealand Amateur Championship but it will not reveal the marathon path he took to get there. Dobbelaar became the youngest winner at age 15 of the New Zealand Amateur in the tournament’s 123-year history but he had to survive some hectic battles to get there. In the first round of matchplay, after two rounds of strokeplay on the previous two days at the Royal Wellington Golf Club at Heretaunga, he found himself in the first of three great tussles. Dobbelaar, from Brisbane, chipped

in to break a deadlock that went to the second extra hole. Then in the quarter- and semi-finals Dobbelaar knocked out two of the tournament’s top chances, the Waikato pair of Nick Coxon and Luke Toomey. An extra hole was required before Dobbelaar triumphed over Coxon in the quarter-final and his match against Toomey in the semi-final went to a dramatic three extra holes. Dobbelaar holed a flop shot on the 21st hole to beat Toomey. Dobbelaar said it was the stand-out moment of the tournament for him. “The shot of my week was really the chip-in in the semi-final,’’ Dobbelaar recalled. “I never thought the ball would get to the hole but it just kept on rolling.” Dobbelaar’s opponent in the final was Peter Spearman-Burn from Wellington who was out to emulate his twin brother Thomas. Thomas Speaman-Burn had won the same tournament when it was held at Paraparaumu Beach, north of Wellington, in 2008. Peter Spearman-Burn had spent a short time as a professional before regaining his amateur status and at age 27 there was no question in the minds of many that his experience would prevail over the young gun. And that’s the way the match appeared headed for much of the 36hole final. Spearman-Burn was never behind in the first 18 holes and went into the second 18 holes with a one up lead. After the 29th hole Spearman-Burn had taken a three up lead and victory was now looking a formality. But the wheels fell off over the next five holes. Spearman-Burn bogeyed each of them to find himself two down with two play. Then on the 35th hole Spearman-Burn and Dobbelaar both had pars to provide the Brisbane boy with a 2 and 1 victory. Despite the youth of Dobbelaar he found it a tiring week. “Now, I just want a good sleep... eight

rounds in five days is a lot of golf, even for me,” he said afterwards. “It feels crazy, the last six holes I thought I had a chance but somehow I battled it out and got the result. “It’s so cool to have a big crowd and it is definitely the biggest win of my career so far, but hopefully there can be a few more.” Dobbelaar was no stranger to the Royal Wellington course. His grand parents live just several hundred metres from the club’s front gates and he had played the course a number of times beforehand. “My dad’s family live just across the road so I love coming here when I get the chance and feel really comfortable,” he said. “I didn’t do anything spectacular to win the final, just make my par putts when it got tight at the end.” Dobbelaar had won the Queensland Boys’ Amateur Championship the previous year, a tournament that had in the past been won by the likes of Greg Norman, Adam Scott, Jason Day and Cam Smith. In the women’s division of the tournament, Rose Zheng showed age was
no barrier as she disposed of her fellow Auckland teammate and captain Munchin Keh, winning by 3 and 2. The 14-year-old became the second youngest in history to win the championship behind world number one Lydia Ko. “I can’t believe it, I can’t believe it and I don’t know what to say,” Zheng said. “It means so much to me and I hope this can be a big boost for my future. Winning my first Jennian Homes Charles Tour event was also a huge booster last week, so I am pretty happy.” Although the margin of victory was dominant, it wasn’t smooth sailing for the Pakuranga member after Keh carded three birdies in four holes early in the second round to bring the match back to even. But for Zheng her to bounce back and finish off the match was a clear sign she is a talent and one to watch for the future. The Royal Wellington club now looks forward to the same time next year. That’s when the club hosts the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship, easily the biggest amateur tournament in this part of the world.

Brand new course for LPGA Tour event in Auckland
W
hen the world’s richest golf circuit for women comes to New Zealand for the first time it will be held at a golf course just a year old. The LPGA (Ladies Professional Golfers’ Association) Tour last month announced that the New Zealand Women’s Open would be added to it’s schedule for 2017 and that it would be held in Auckland at Windross Farm. That’s a name many New Zealand golfers will not be familiar with. And that’s because the golf course was only opened on September 1. Windross Farm is what was known as the Manukau Golf Club which used to be based at Takanini in south Auckland. But the golf course land at Takanini was purchased by a housing developer for $40 million and a new golf course was built a few minutes down the road at Ardmore. The New Zealand Women’s Open has been held in Christchurch in recent years. The latest event, held at Clearwater in February, carried total prizemoney of 200,000 euros, or about $300,000 in our money. Next year’s event, to be held from September 28-October 1, will have a purse of $US1.3 million. That’s $1.8 million in our money. In other words this will be the biggest golf event for New Zealand since Tiger Woods turned up for the men’s New Zealand Open at Paraparaumu Beach, north of Wellington, in 2002. Tiger could only finish fifth with victory going to the rotund

Australian figure of Craig Parry. New Zealand’s interest in next year’s women’s national open will centre of our own Lydia Ko. She has a fair-to-middling record in the New Zealand Open. For example in 2010 she could only finish seventh. Some of you may point out that she was only aged 12 at the time. Fair point. More recently, in 2014, she only finished second. Some of you may point out that she had come down with a bug during the tournament and could have been forgiven for withdrawing. Fair point. More seriously, Lydia has played our national open for the last seven years, never missed the cut and has won three times in the last four years. An amazing record. But next year the opposition will be 10 times stronger and distraction will be a bigger obstacle than anything else as she will be the tournament’s figurehead. Ko headed the announcement of next year’s tournament. From Florida in the United States she said: “I am so excited with this announcement to bring the LPGA to my hometown in Auckland. “I am honoured to be the first player to sign up to play. It is going to be amazing for me and my family to host my LPGA friends

in my country. I want to see golf grow in New Zealand and more women playing the game, so this news today is fantastic.” The LPGA has committed to the tournament for at least three years. LPGA commissioner Mike Whan said: “We’re excited to extend our global reach... and enable our tour players and global television viewers to experience the beauty of New Zealand.” The tournament will be sponsored by

McKayson, a newly launched sports apparel brand. Auckland mayor Phil Goff joined the announcement. He said: “The tournament allows us to work with government to showcase Auckland to wider high-value tourism markets like those in China, Japan, South Korea, the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom. “The media exposure alone in the high value markets will reach millions of people. The coverage we get from this will help grow golfing tourism to the benefit of Auckland.” New Zealand Golf chief executive Dean Murphy said: “The LPGA international platform will allow Auckland and New Zealand a unique opportunity to
promote ourselves to a worldwide audience in over 150 countries with over eight hours of television coverage. “We have a chance to show off our great golf courses in this country to a massive global audience and build on the investment in golf infrastructure and tourism. “Bringing the major women’s golf tour to this country will provide an unprecedented opportunity for all golfers and sports fans to watch some of the game’s best players in action, as well as excite young kids to take up the sport. And it gives us a chance for Lydia to play in an LPGA event here at home.” LYDIA KO PHOTO: LPGA TOUR

“The course has been officially ranked as the #1 golf course in Dunedin and #24 in New Zealand by www.golfrankings.co.nz. On behalf of the members at Chisholm Links Golf Club, I would like to extend a very warm welcome to the 32nd National Left Handed Golf Tournament. Chisholm Links is situated 10mins east from the heart of Dunedin, in Tainui and borders the Pacific Ocean. The course was developed on reserve land during the 1930's depression years. The original name was Ocean Beach Links. From these humble beginnings it has become one of the best links courses in the country. Former European and Australasian Tour professional and leading NZ Golf Course architect Greg Turner thinks Chisholm Links is pretty special. He says, "It has good turf and it's on good golfing land. It offers classic links golf. I think, that after Paraparaumu Beach, it's the second best links course in New Zealand". Chisholm Links has been very fortunate to have a great volunteer work force who works tirelessly with our greens team to maintain and upgrade the course we have today.”

Campbell and Kobori to join Ko in Florida T he three recipients of the Lydia Ko scholarship have been announced by New Zealand Golf. They are Alanna Campbell (Bay of Plenty), Momoka Kobori (Canterbury) and Eujin Kang (Auckland). The goal of the scholarship is to better prepare New Zealand’s top women amateur golfers for success on the world stage, said New Zealand Golf’s high performance manager Gregg Thorpe. “Without access to the right information bridging the gap, from being a strong national level player to being an internationally successful amateur can be a difficult one,’’ Thorpe said. “Without this step, turning professional can ultimately

seem out of reach.” As part of the scholarship two of three players — Campbell and Kobori — will head to Florida in the United States next month to spend time with Ko and gain some understanding of life as a top professional. Added Thorpe: “To be able to spend time with Lydia and her team will deepen the players understanding of what skills are needed, and to learn how to bridge these gaps. “Alanna and Momoka are very capable young golfers with exciting futures, they are certainly deserving of this opportunity. “The ultimate goal is to get more of our elite amateurs playing on the world stage, to compete and win, and to fly the Kiwi flag.
“The mentoring Lydia and her team offers is invaluable to furthering their development,” Ko said she was excited at the opportunity to host the girls and proud to be able to provide support back to women in golf in New Zealand in recognition of the support she received along her journey. “I am really pleased to be able to work with New Zealand Golf to in some small way, help out the next young golfers,’’ Ko said. “I received support from so many people as I grew up and I’m proud to be able to give something back. I’m really looking forward to having these girls over and spending time with them, hopefully they enjoy their time with me.” Momoka Kobori

Millbrook Resort awarded Oceania’s best golf hotel
M
illbrook Resort has won two top prizes at the 2016 World Golf Awards, which celebrates and rewards excellence in golf tourism, world class courses and golf destinations. The World Golf Awards, held in Portugal last month, named Millbrook as the winner of both Oceania’s and New Zealand’s best golf hotel awards. The Oceania region represents Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. Millbrook Resort director of operations Brian Howie said: “We’re honoured to receive this award and to not only be recognised for our 27-hole championship golf course but also for our passion for hospitality and delivering first-class customer service. “In 1993, the Ishii family set out to create a resort of international standing to be built in harmony with the land. This award is an endorsement of their vision and business strategy.” The award comes ahead of the New Zealand Golf Open that will be hosted by Millbrook next March. The New Zealand Open is part of the PGA Tour of Australasia held in partnership with Japan Golf Tour. The event will see leading professional golfers from the Japan Golf Tour play the event. Millbrook’s golf course was designed by two of New Zealand’s most renowned professional golfers. The original 18-hole course was designed in 1993 by Sir Bob Charles and in 2009 an additional nine holes were designed by Greg Turner who also remodelled the 18-hole course. This provides three interchangeable 18hole course configurations set in spectacular alpine scenery against the backdrop of the Remarkables Mountain Range. Each of the nine-hole courses is named after local Queenstown landmarks — The Remarkables, The Arrow and The Coronet Nine.
In 2014 Millbrook acquired 66 hectares of land adjacent to the resort, which will enable further development of an additional nine holes that will provide even further options for guests and golfers. This is the second time in the three years that the World Golf Awards have been running, that Millbrook has won New Zealand’s best golf hotel. Votes from the public and industry professionals determine the award recipients. A vote from an industry professional carries five times the weighting of a public vote. Millbrook has also recently won New Zealand’s best resort spa at the 2016 World Spa Awards 2016 and has been rec-
ognised as New Zealand’s best luxury hotel at the 2016 World Luxury Hotel Awards. Howie added: “These award wins demonstrate our success in achieving our vision for Millbrook to be not only the first choice of lifestyle resort, but a destination in itself.” Millbrook is a five-star golf and lifestyle resort, in the Queenstown area. It offers luxury accommodation, a day spa, four restaurants, a 27-hole championship golf course, a health and fitness centre, conference facilities and real estate. It caters for on-site weddings, corporate retreats and conferences, as well as independent hotel guests and day visitors to the resort.
MILLBROOK WINS INTERNATIONAL LUXURY HOTEL AND SPA AWARDS MILLBROOK RESORT has won the luxury spa hotel award at the 2016 World Luxury Hotel Awards and been named New Zealand’s best resort spa at the 2016 World Luxury Spa Awards. Millbrook resort director of operations Brian Howie said the resort had gone from strength to strength, and the team was delighted to be recognised by the awards, adding to numerous other awards and accolades received over the past few years. “Our surrounding natural landscape, commitment to open space in and around the resort, and range of luxurious accommodation options, are what sets Millbrook apart,’’ Howie said. “But we’re also focused on delivering first class customer service, as an essential part of meeting the expectations of guests seeking a bit of luxury.” The spa at Millbrook was opened in 2001, and has undergone on-going expansion and development to meet local and guest demand. Millbrook is a five-star golf and lifestyle resort, in the Queenstown area. It offers luxury accommodation, a day spa, four restaurants, a 27-hole championship golf course (host to the New Zealand Open), a health and fitness centre, conference facilities and real estate.
Record golf tourism growth for New Zealand
G
olf tourism in New Zealand is thriving with golf visitors up a record 23 percent alongside an 18 percent increase in spending by these visitors for the year ending April, 2016. The growth rate is among one of the highest in the world. Golf Tourism New Zealand’s third golf tourism progress report was released last month, providing a summary of activity taken over the past year as

part of the International Golf Tourism Strategy. An impressive $329 million is being pumped into the economy each year from international golf tourism, the organisation said. Over the last few years there has been significant investment in new and existing courses resulting in New Zealand offering a range of uncrowded but internationally ranked courses that are proving very attractive.
Chief Executive of IAGTO (International Association of Golf Tour Operators) Peter Walton said the growth in golf visitors to New Zealand in the past year is a great example of what can be achieved within a relatively short space of time when a national tourist board invests in golf tourism promotion and, most importantly, is guided by a sustainable golf tourism promotional strategy. “The results speak for themselves and are testament to
December 2016
Tourism New Zealand’s golf tourism initiative,’’ Walton said. “We are confident that international golf travel to New Zealand will continue to snowball because the destination has clusters of truly spectacular golf courses providing a golf experience that is quite unique to New Zealand and will be much sought after as the word spreads.'' The golf tourism market is extremely valuable. Golfing visitors tend to stay longer
and spend more, staying on average 27 days compared with other holiday visitors who stay for an average 16 days. Golfing visitors are also more likely to do other activities like visiting wineries and local attractions. New Zealand has around 400 courses and offers incredible variety, from oceanfront subtropical courses in the north to alpine settings in the south.

Hawke’s Bay 4-Course Classic makes it’s debut T
he inaugural Hawke’s Bay 4-Course Classic, celebrating golf and wine across the Hawke’s Bay region, finished with winners from Nelson, Purangi, Royal Auckland and Mt Maunganui. More than 110 golfers and partners from 45 golf clubs in New Zealand, Australia, the United States and Fiji took part in the four-day event, playing Maraenui, Napier, Hawke’s Bay and Hastings golf clubs. The men’s and women’s field was split into 5 divisions by handicap with a concurrent strokeplay competition for lower handicap players. The main competition was stableford, with daily prizes recognising the top scores at each course. Shirley Otton (Nelson) won the women’s first division with 151 points, and a six-point margin over Sherrill Jeeves (Sherwood Park) in second place. Kathy Maxwell (Windross Farm) was third, one shot on
a countback from Judy Hart (Remuera). In the second division Maxine Kavalli (Purangi) led all week, finishing on 154 points, a six-point winning margin. Younghwa Lee (Waitemata) was second and one point back third was Gretchen Brown (Feilding). In the men first division, another Purangi member, Tim Barlett took the honours with a score of 158 stableford points, the largest winning margin over the five groups. Seventeen points back second was Brian Murphy (Marenui) while Philip Green (Nudgee, Australia) was a point back, on 140, to take third. John Henley (Royal Auckland) with 146 points, won the men’s second division, three ahead of Jack Callesen (Omanu) on 143. Fellow Omanu club member Kevin Powell was third, with 142 points. In the third divisiion Bill Potze (Mt Maunganui) had a solid week leading in all four rounds, and fin-
THE GREATEST AMATEUR IN THE WORLD — TED MCDOUGALL PICTURED is the front cover of a book about one of New Zealand's greatest amateur golfers, Ted McDougall. The book has been compiled by McDougall’s son Peter. The book was made possible by Ted McDougall’s wife Leonie who kept an extensive scrap book of newspapers clippings from her husband’s feats on the golf course. The book contains many references from those clippings and some of the delightful phrases of those times. One example was when McDougall won the 1957 New Zealand Amateur. The New Zealand Herald newspaper reported there would be a welcoming committee to greet McDougall when he stepped from the train at Pukekohe on his return home.
ishing on 159 points. Second was Bob Walker (Purangi) and Peter Wright (Waihi) came third. Eleanor Hodson (New Plymouth), an accomplished Taranaki representative, won the women’s strokeplay event with rounds of 88, 85, 82 and 90 for a final score of 345 while the men’s strokeplay ended on a tie with a total score of 320. The two oplayers Craig Maxwell (78, 79, 82, 81) and Kevin Yeo (81, 77, 81, 81). Maxwell is a member of Auckland’s recently opened Windross Farm while Yeo was a visiting golfer from Australia with Redcliff his home club. The tournament was managed and promoted by PaR nz Golfing Holidays, New Zealand’s largest golf tour and tournament operator, supported by the four clubs and in conjunction with Napier City Council, the Art Deco Society and Hawke's Bay Tourism.
The newspaper mentioned several dignitaries who would be part of the welcoming committee and that there would be a social evening at the Pukekohe golf house that night. In a classic example of the period, the paper reported: “All members of the club and their friends are invited to be present. The ladies are asked to take a plate of something to eat.’' McDougall was a strongly-built man who became known for a power-packed game. Newspaper reports often referred to this and lines would include: “... unleashed his powerful shoulders.’’ McDougall won two New Zealand Opens and represented the country at an amazing seven Eisenhower Trophy’s.

Plenty in store for 2017 Mid Am tournament By Denise Langdon PaR nz Golfing Holidays
GOLF NEWS
O
manu Golf Club in the Bay of Plenty will be the venue for the 2017 New Zealand Mid Amateur Men’s and Women’s Championship. This is an excellent venue in the heart of Mt Maunganui – a popular beach and golfing destination. Dates have been for January 13-15, securing a Friday-to-Sunday slot in mid-January in a similar fashion to this year’s Mid Am in Mangawhai. This scheduling puts it outside of most club and season opening times, and avoids clashing with other national events.
The summer dates are likely to attract players both nationally and internationally to a beautiful part of New Zealand that offers many top attractions and beaches for non-playing partners and families. Omanu is a top venue that has hosted two national events: the 2010 NZ Men’s Seniors and a year later, the New Zealand Under-19s. Often in the shadow of nearby Mt Maunganui and Tauranga Golf Clubs, Omanu is a relatively new course. It was registered in 1971 after a twoyear period of development involving fund-raising and acquisition of land next to Tauranga Airport. As with many new sporting bodies, cash was tight. Initial funds were raised through a series of debenture offers, including NZ$10,000 from five local investors. The course was opened for play in April 1972, after the project succeeded ahead of an alternative land-use proposal for a children’s park. Course designer Harry Dale worked on an initial 10 holes, and the first clubhouse was built in 1974. Re-working and further course design, including new holes, was completed in 1975.
The course is relatively flat, based on a sandy soil with a number of gentle undulations and a few water hazards. The course is known for its well-groomed greens, which are firm but smooth. The current Mid Amateur format combines the previous NZ Men’s Mid Amateur and the Women’s Individual Masters Championship. Play is over
three days, a 54-hole gross challenge with prizes by age groups in addition to net and stableford prizes. Entry forms will be out shortly and available via www.parnz.co.nz or www.golf.org.nz. Omanu means ‘nesting’ place or ‘resting place of birds’ – so we hope that the 2017 competitors find this a good omen for some top golf.
Waikato Women’s President wins Women’s Senior Foursomes D
ianne Sweeney (Walton) the Waikato Women’s President, partnered with Deb Ring (Walton) have won the 43rd New Zealand Women’s Senior Handicap Foursomes at Matamata Golf Club today. For their four days work, the pair win the NZLGU Senior Women’s Salvers and the 2016 title. In a closely fought match that seesawed between the front and back nines, the Walton duo denied the Matamata pairing of Lynne Edmonds and Brenda Hull a coveted home win. Sweeney and Ring took an early that they held till the 11th, being 3 holes up. Edmonds and Hull however clawed back to be all level at the 15th. A wayward tee shot put the home favourites out of bounds on the tricky par 3 - 16th, followed by a missed putt on the 17th gifting Walton a 2/1 win. On reaching this afternoons final, Sweeney and Ring needed 20 holes to edge out Janet Myers (Cambridge) and Nan Johnston (Hamilton) in this mornings semi-final. Edmonds and Hull had had an easier run when they secured their final place 2/1 against fellow Matamata members, Ruth Taylor and Diane Voyce. Top qualifiers after Monday’s net qualifying round were Ngaire English

and Robyn Pardy. Both are members of North Shore Golf Club. English is a past representative for North Harbour, and Pardy was born with golf in her blood, the daughter of the late Bob Glading. Sadly for this pairing, their early form could not be matched and they lost their first match on Tuesday. They also lost their final match of the tournament, the battle for Flight 2 to the 2011 winners, Donna Sullivan (Weedons) and Wendy Storey (North Shore), this afternoon. Also in the prize pool for the top division were Rosalie Brown and Dixie
Horne, both from Mt Maunganui winning the Plate, and Gillian Hazlehurst and Lynn Ryan (Matamata) winning the other Flight. The second division, competing for the Mrs SS Wilson Plates, was won by Heather Blackwell and Jill Evans (Weedons) on the 18th hole, against Valda Anderson (Foxton) and Larraine Duckett (Masterton). The Plate winners were Judith Simpson (Pupuke) and Diane Taylor (Mangawhai) with Flights being won by Noeleen Hill and Jocelyn Poananga from Whakatane, along with Marian Irvine and Christine Kampfraath, both members of Rotorua. Local hopes were on the strong pairing of Sheelah Lamb and Pam Wright winning division three and the ADLGA Trophies, but alas the Matamata pair were beaten on the 18th this afternoon. Wright, a current Waikato masters representative, and Lamb, were one of the lowest combined pairs on handicap going into the tournament, but a disappointing qualifying round seeded them in the 3rd division. A solid performance all week from Edna Connolly and Anke Hermannsdorfer (Waihi) gave them the trophies, with Lee Ann Pitcon and Heather Sharp (Walton) winning the Plate. The two Flights were won by Nola Marriott and

Jacqui Planicka (Weedons), along with Lis Stringer and Jo Free (Napier). Jo Hollies (The Grange) and Andrea Mark (Paraparaumu Beach) won the fourth division, the Rosetown Cups in convincing style with a 5/3 win over Jan Gibson (Tarras) and Rosa Westgarth (Pleasant Point). The Plate was won by Waihi member’s Margaret Lecky and Denise McConnon, with the two Flights won by Shirlie Ryan (Matamata) paired with Roz Tucker (Mt Maunganui) and Sue Cook with long-time foursomes partner Verna Scott. Cook and Scott are both members of Warkworth. Denise Langdon, from PaR nz Golfing Holidays who manage the tournament on behalf of New Zealand Golf advised that the 2017 venue will be the New Plymouth Golf Club, commonly known as Ngamotu. The dates follow the same annual programme with the qualifying round on Monday 20 November, with 3-days foursomes match play commencing Tuesday 21 November. New Zealand Women’s Open truly goes global By Dean Murphy New Zealand Golf Chief Executive
L
ast month I was delighted to announce the future of the New Zealand Women’s Open. In partnership with our promoter, The Clubhouse (NZ) Limited, we are incredibly proud to bring the first ever LPGA event to New Zealand. The event will boast a purse of $US1.3 million and will be the first LPGA or PGA Tour event to take place in New Zealand. This is a significant achievement and the result of a huge amount of planning and preparation over the past 18 months. At the outset, it is important to state that this journey to bring the LPGA to New Zealand has been inspired by the once in a generation superstar that is Lydia Ko. Never before has New Zealand had such a global phenomenon and we are incredibly thankful to receive her full support for this event. Lydia has signed on as the first player to commit to play in the McKayson New Zealand Women’s
Open and Lydia will also be our tournament host. In my view, Lydia represents all that is good about New Zealand and sport. While she has world class talent and has achieved so much already in her short career, Lydia remains humble, gracious and a Kiwi girl at heart. Best of all, Lydia conducts herself in a manner which is an inspiration to all New Zealanders. We are so pleased we are able to bring her to Auckland to compete in her home town on the world’s biggest tour. This story also underlines the value of golf to the NZ economy and in particular through golf tourism. In-bound golf tourism delivered $329 million to New Zealand in the year ended August 2016 which was a 23 percent increase over last year and an increase from $145 million in 2013. Back in 2013, a small group of experts, including The Clubhouse managing director Michael Goldstein, developed a NZ Golf Tourism strategy which has been instrumental in delivering these great re-

significant asset for the city of Auckland. It is a great reflection on the truly diverse nature of golf where a working class club from south Auckland has developed a world class facility that will now host one of the biggest events ever seen in New Zealand. Bringing an event of this scale excites us at New Zealand Golf because it will provide an opportunity for us to expose the game to a huge number of New Zealanders. Golf is a unique game. It is played by people of all ages, all races, all backgrounds and all abilities and we hope this event will showcase the game and capture the interest of people across the country. We truly hope the sporting public will get right in behind this event and support Lydia as she plays in front of her home crowd. It is an incredible unique opportunity to see the world’s best here in our backyard so I encourage you all to make plans to attend from September 28-October 1 next year. sults. From an event perspective, the LPGA is a global tour with truly global reach. It attracts television and media viewers from around the world and this has helped us to secure significant title sponsorship support of McKayson, a Korean apparel and accessory sports brand. We are thrilled that our vision has been validated by a Korean company wishing to invest in marketing their brand through an event on New Zealand shores and in doing so invest in New Zealand sport. The LPGA international broadcast platform will provide Auckland and New Zealand with a unique opportunity to promote ourselves to a world-wide audience in more than 150 countries with over eight hours of television coverage. We have a chance to show off the fantastic golf courses we have to this global audience throughout the broadcast. Significantly, the event will be staged at the new Windross Farm Golf Course in south Auckland. Windross Farm is a new development that has seen over $30 million of investment to create what is a

Investing in great visuals — such as golf By Andrew Whiley A voice from the south
Y
ou probably won’t be surprised to learn that I do not believe that Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (Ateed) or the NZ Government Events Fund should have invested in the Joseph Parker world boxing organisation title fight against Mexico’s Andy Ruiz in Auckland. I am just not sure how you can leverage an event like this to a global market. When I think of investments in events, I think of “global eyeballs” that will see the event and go “wow”. Yes, I am aware that millions of boxing and sporting fans will watch this event but whenever I have watched boxing, I don’t think I have ever thought “What an amazing location. I should go there”. I may have enjoyed the event and the drama in the ring and I believe the Parker-Ruiz event will be just as spectacular. However, I’m not expecting to watch a boxing match which includes a tourism plug about local Auckland sites and ame-
nities. I remember when I lived overseas and used to watch the New Zealand Open on television. The visuals from Gulf Harbour for the World Cup, watching Mathew Lane winning the NZ Open at Formosa or the Tiger Woods New Zealand Open at Paraparaumu Beach where Craig Parry won — these were events that promoted the regions and showed off their settings. I often had friends talking to me about how great the golf courses looked and how they couldn’t wait to visit New Zealand to play golf. Today, when the NZ Open is played at The Hills (or at Millbrook next year) my Facebook goes off with my friends commenting how great the golf course looks or about the amazing scenery. The NZ Open telecast had the largest broadcasting scope ever, with 25.8 million households receiving live coverage and 22.4 million households receiving nightly highlights. The coverage reached over 20 countries including Australia, France, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Korea, Taiwan, and
Japan. New Zealand Tourism believed the NZ Open delivered significant profile gains with international journalists publishing articles about their time in New Zealand. These articles reached over six million people and the equivalent advertising value of these articles was estimated to be just over $1 million NZD. It is estimated that more than 61,000 international visitors played golf in New Zealand in the last year equating to a value of $329 million. The average spend by the visiting golfer was $5385 which was up 18 percent from the previous year ($4563). These visitors are active travellers and enjoy other tourism activities especially our food and wine. Not all of these visitors are playing the Kauri Cliffs and Cape Kidnappers but many are enjoying the variety of wonderful club courses we have like Waitangi and Taupo Golf Club. So, when I hear commentators in the media rant about how the Parker-Ruiz boxing event should be funded at the same level that the government and
tourism invests in golf, I think they better review what the investment is all about. What will the return be? What is the supporting industry? Sorry, but I am not sure that we would be able to quantify the boxing tourist and calculate the value of what they see and do and translate this to a return-on-investment. The recent announcement of the support from the government and Ateed over the LPGA New Zealand Open next September in Auckland and the 2017 Asia-Pacific Amateur in Wellington in October will provide an amazing month of golf. Millions of visuals will go out globally, resulting in thousands of golfers and often their partners, families and friends travelling to our wonderful golfing country. They may not come next year but like my friends, they keep saying “yes” they are definitely coming sometime soon. So no matter if you agree with my views or not, what I do know is that by the time you read this article, the Parker-Ruiz fight will probably be over. And hopefully, we’ll be celebrating his win.

Exciting year in prospect with much NZ representation By Duncan Simpson New Zealand PGA Secretary
T
he numbers of New Zealand professional golfers on overseas tours in 2017 will create plenty of interest for golf fans throughout the year. There’s also a ton of action locally, starting straight after New Year with a packed pro-am schedule leading towards the New Zealand PGA Championship and New Zealand Open tournaments, both in March. All of this can only benefit the profile of golf. We certainly owe a great debt to Lydia Ko for what she has done for the sport in recent years. But it’s rather ironical that although her results are reported faithfully week in and week out regardless of how she performs, her male counterparts have to actually win a tournament before getting a mention. Here’s hoping there’s more balance in this area in 2017. For starters, we now have Danny Lee, Steven Alker and Tim Wilkinson all on the world’s richest golf circuit, the PGA Tour. Danny had a relatively disappointing year in 2016 by his standards, but he is now well established on the tour and will be able to plan his schedule with reasonable certainty. I predict he will win another event in 2017, and contend well in at least two of the majors.
By contrast, Alker and Wilkinson will have to seize every opportunity they can in the early part of the season to lift their rankings before the big guns come out to play again. Neither will want to return to the grind of the Web.Com Tour, the secondary circuit to the PGA Tour. We will also have Ryan Fox on the European Tour, whose excellent performances on the Challenge Tour over the last two years should set him up well for 2017. He can handle a tough travel schedule, and the multicultural nature of the European Tour won’t faze him. Michael Hendry is now well established on the Japan Tour, and looks set to emulate or better David Smail’s record on this circuit over many years. He may well have Brad Shilton and Daniel Pearce as company, providing they make it through the final Japan Qualifying School in December. The Japan Tour works in well with our local circuit, as that gives players like Hendry time to tune their game before heading off to Japan in April. The Charles Tour events in New Zealand, in particular, are usually a good guide to overseas success. On the home front, there’s a back to the future look about the PGA of New Zealand’s 2017 tournament schedule, featuring several venues that haven’t hosted pro-ams since the heyday of the New Zealand professional golf circuit in the 1970s
and 1980s. The pro-am format is not only a chance for our players to build a stake for the year ahead, but also an opportunity for amateurs to play alongside professionals and see just how good these guys are. Fans and players alike won’t have to wait long for action in the New Year: the Whitford Park pro-am kicks off on January 7, a couple of weeks earlier than normal. Josh Geary won this in 2015 to start a successful year which included several PGA China Tour victories, eventually securing him Web.Com Tour status for 2016. Michael Hendry was a convincing winner of the same event in 2016, to trigger off his best year yet as a professional golfer. So the 2017 Whitford pro-am could again be a good early form guide for the rest of the year. Next cab off the rank is the PGA’s annual Qualifying School in Taupo, where those wishing to have a crack at the professional ranks line up alongside a bunch of existing tour players seeking to regain their status on the NZ Tour. A handful of tour cards will be on offer after three pressure-packed rounds. In recent years Daniel Pearce and Kieran Muir have ignited their professional careers by winning Q School, thus gaining preferential entry to all NZ PGA pro-am events for the next 12 months.
The successful players from Q School will then be eligible to join the circuit for the two day Takapuna tournament on January 17 and 18, with events to follow at Waitemata, Akarana and Pakuranga — a total of $62,000 in prizemoney will be up for grabs over the week. PGA records indicate that it is several decades since Takapuna last hosted a professional golf tournament, and there will be much interest in how the professionals tackle the weekend warriors’ traditional battle ground. A sub-60 round or two could be in the mix, although the Thomas Park track tends to play harder than it looks. January finishes with a swing through the bottom part of the North Island, with one day tournaments at Napier, Martinborough and Paraparaumu Beach, followed by the popular two-day event at the Eketahuna and Masterton courses. This was where Ryan Fox debuted as a professional in 2012, and he must have fancied his chances after shooting 15 under for the two rounds, only to find that Grant Moorhead had gone two shots better. Ryan made amends by winning the Martinborough pro-am two days later — the first of many victories he has recorded since. As I said at the start — looks like an exciting year — and that’s only January.

The Zombie Phenomenon By Anthony Barkley NZPGA Professional
I
heard this expression from a golf company recently and having thought about it, it does make sense in the golf industry. A Zombie in this definition is referred to a golfer that follows the same habits or ways without being open to new methods or goods. In no way is it intended as a personal insult on any reader but let’s find out if you may categorise yourself as a Zombie golfer after this article. So the first thing you need to ask yourself is why do you use the gear you do? If you have used a certain ball for years and years, why? Why do you use the clubs you have? Why do you support the brands you do?
If the answers are because the brand always make good gear, because I have always used it or because my mate said I should then you as a golfer may be part of the Zombie Phenomenon. If this is you rest assured you are not alone and to be honest is it that bad. What it means is that as a golfer you can be a little closed to potential gains from technology in club and shaft design. And lets face it, there have been considerable changes from companies over the last few years that have changed the way clubs are made. The thing is, the technology changes will not stop so as a golfer you can either choose to ignore these and keep doing what you have always done or use it to your advantage. If you keep doing the same things,
if you cant justify why you use a ball or you firmly believe that anything new wont help your game I think you need to break the Zombie cycle and look outside the square a little. You may find yourself something that works. Here is a great example of a client who admits to have being in the Zombie cycle until he tried something different: I was a hard core ……. fan, and never thought I’d find a ball that measured up to this leading brand. That was until someone in my group said I should give the new Wilson Staff Duo Urethane a go. Even though I loved the …….. on approach shots and on and around the green, I found them a bit soft off the tee. The ……… was firmer off the tee, and straighter when I hit a bad shot, but
too hard on approach shots and on and around the green. When I tried the Wilson Duo I was very pleasantly surprised to find that it was a great combination of feeling firm on tee shots and flying far, and being extremely soft feeling on approach shots and on and around the green. For putting, it was particularly nice feeling, and probably softer than the ProV1. For approach shots with short irons the ball had that nice sticky feeling, when you compress the ball and you feel like it sticks to your club face for a fraction of a second. Probably one of the best features of the ball for me being a father with a young family, is the price. So, are you part of the Zombie Phenomenon?

GOLF NEWS
Punch bowl par three course launched at Manor Park G olf is too expensive, it takes too much time and the game is too hard. We hear such comments all the time and they could be some of the reasons behind declining membership numbers at golf clubs around the world. With that in mind Manor Park Golf Sanctuary in Wellington has introduced an exciting new par three course with a difference in an effort to turn those numbers around. Manor Park has used existing holes for the par three course but this is not just a case of marching half-way down the fairway, throwing down some tee markers and calling it a new par three hole. Instead it is a criss-cross of existing holes, crossing existing fairways and approaching existing greens from completely new angles. None of the hitting-off areas will be from the middle of existing fairways — therefore avoiding an unsightly group of divots for the course proper. Manor Park launched the course, known as the Punch Bowl Par-3 to reflect its all-sorts mixture, this month and as a sign of the club’s commitment it will be included as part of the club’s main open summer tournament on
January 2 and 3. The Punch Bowl course will comprise 12 holes and none of them will be long. The holes vary in distance from just 85m to 140m (55m to 125 for women or learners) but include some completely new obstacles. The Punch Bowl course was the idea of Manor Park club captain Ian Voisey
who said something new was needed in the face of declining membership numbers. “Rugby has sevens, cricket has 2020, soccer has indoor five-man and we needed something new,’’ Voisey told Golfer Pacific. “This will be easy, inexpensive and exciting. It won’t take five hours to play.
“The course can be played in less than two hours and hopefully this will encourage people to give it a go. Even the most traditionalist of golfers might try it.’’ At this stage the Punch Bowl course will be open on Friday and Sunday afternoons but the club will be flexible to demand.

TSB Bank Nelson Festival Of Golf 2017 By Derek Drysdale, Tournament Director
GOLF EVENT
We are delighted to announce that TSB Bank have agreed to continue their valued support as our Major Sponsor for our next tournament in May, 2017. TSB Bank Nelson Festival Of Golf has also received sponsorship funding for next year’s event from the Nelson Events Marketing & Development Programme, which is funded by Nelson City Council. The Programme’s objective is to stimulate Nelson City’s economy in the shoulder and off seasons by bringing new spending through visitors coming to Nelson for district events.” For further information contact them on 03 545 6858. As one of the ‘must play’ events in the New Zealand golfing calendar, the TSB Bank Nelson Festival of Golf has it all - one round of Ambrose in teams of four, followed by three rounds of individual stableford competition in separate divisions for daily stableford prizes per division With a fantastic array of prizes on offer, we’re delighted to again be offering all competitors the chance to win a car for getting a hole in one, on the allotted hole during the tournament. Our long putt competition will again bring lots of fun
to the week, and with a major prize at the end of it, it’s worth getting on that practice green early. The overall division winners will be decided on each player’s accumulated total from the three individual rounds played. As in previous years we are again putting up some great novelty prizes and lucky draws to keep everyone in the hunt for a reward. After our decision to move this year’s tournament to early May, our participants enjoyed the beautiful weather that our region is famed for. Hopefully next year will be exactly the same, beautiful sunny weather and fabulous golf courses to enjoy. – Making entry to the TSB Bank Nelson Festival of Golf a great competition for players of all abilities. The format has also changed slightly for this next tournament with the weeks itinerary as follows:
SUNDAY 30TH APRIL:
Registration at Nelson Golf Club between 12noon and 3pm. Tournament Director, Derek Drysdale, confirmed that from 3pm onwards on Sunday 30th April, Nelson Golf Club will offer all competitors courtesy of the course to go out and play some golf to get a feel for the conditions. The tournament committee would like to thank the Nelson Golf Club for this generous gesture, as I
am sure all the visitors to the area would like to take up that offer.
MONDAY 1ST MAY:
9.15am Shotgun start – to be played over the wonderful Nelson Golf Links. This is our only Team Day for the tournament, with everyone playing an Ambrose Competition in teams of four, with plenty of team prizes up for grabs. No individual scores will count towards the individual weekly total and the team section will only apply on the Monday. For anyone entering individually or in couples, you will be matched up into teams for the day. Just let us know when you complete your entry form and we’ll arrange it for you. Before and after play on Monday there will be the Long Putt Qualifying Round, so make sure you have a shot at this fun event as it proved very popular last time round. Qualifiers will go into a shoot-out on Friday with the chance of winning a major prize. The Team Day prize giving will take place in the clubhouse at close of play.
TUESDAY 2ND MAY:
9.15am Shotgun start at Motueka Golf Club. This is the first of three daily individual rounds, in handicap divisions, which count toward the accumulative individual score for the week. Daily prize giving will take place in the clubhouse after play to reward
The course is a great test of golf which will make you think about that next shot on every hole. As their website says, “it is the Best Island Golf Course”.
the best players of the day. New Zealand golf legend, Sir Bob Charles recently played at Motueka and described it as one of New Zealand’s hidden gems. He was not wrong and you will love this beautiful tree lined parkland course. As the next day is a rest day, we thought it would be good to get together n the evening, so we are holding a quiz night at Nelson Golf Club, as we feel the camaraderie is so good during the week it will be a fun night out.
FRIDAY 5TH MAY:
9.15am Shotgun start for this final round at the Nelson Golf Links. Played on wonderfully true greens it will offer everyone the chance to putt their way to glory. Today will determine the winners of each division. There will be the daily prize giving at the end of play The qualifiers for the putting shootout will take part in the final Putt-Off in front of the assembled competitors.... so no pressure, eh? The Major Prize Giving will take place in the Nelson Clubhouse in the evening hosted by The 19th Cafe & Bar. Nelson Golf Links: A wonderful golfcourse which has recently hosted both the NZ Amateur Championships and the NZ Senior Championships. Being chosen to host these great tournaments is indeed a great accolade from New Zealand Golf. I am sure that Superintendent Brendan O’Hara and his team will have the course at its best for all the competitors involved. I would like to thank our sponsors at this time, as without them we couldn’t put things together at this level of competition.
WEDNESDAY 3RD MAY:
A rest day! If, in fact, you need a rest…. we are aware that some of you just can’t get enough golf, and there are many options for a round on a different course, like The Waahi Taakaro 9 holer in Nelson’s Maitai Valley. Alternatively you can enjoy some of the many other fabulous things to do in the Nelson / Tasman Region, there’s plenty to choose from.
THURSDAY 4TH MAY:
9.15am Shotgun start. Played at Greenacres Golf Club, the second round in the individual competition, in handicap divisions could be called “moving day”, so keep those scores low! The daily prize giving will again take place in the clubhouse after the day’s play. Greenacres golf course has outstanding views no matter where you look.

The par-72 6440m championship course includes 11 lakes and 70 bunkers with something to test even the most experienced golfer. Players will remember every hole, use every club in their bag and eagerly anticipate the next day’s play. Possibly the most exhilarating hole is the diminutive par-three 16th which plays to just 130m from the back tees. It’s not the length of this hole that stops you in your tracks, it’s the scenery. NEWS FROM AROUND THE REGIONS
NORTHLAND FREYBERG MASTERS 2016
The Northland men’s Master’s side recently travelled to Otago to compete in the 2016 Men’s Masters interprovincial tournament, the side consisted of, in playing order: Lyn Tugaga (Sherwood Park), Iain Power (Northland), Scott Wilson (BOI Kerikeri), Gavin Ashwell (Wellsford), Bob Shirley (Carrington) and Grant Campbell (Manager/Reserve). It was the first time that Tugaga and Ashwell featured in a interprovincial masters tournament while the rest of the team were shuffled around in unfamiliar playing positions. The Northland side were looking to emulate their successful campaign in 2014 where they were crowned National Champions at the Waitangi Golf Club. Their campaign did not start the way that was planned
with convincing losses to Waikato and Auckland in very windy conditions on the first day, day two didn’t fear much better with the Northland team going down to Canterbury and Manawatu-Whanganui. Day 3 didn’t boost the Northland team’s confidence with another loss to Bay of Plenty, with an afternoon Bye scheduled it was time for the team to recoup and gather themselves before making a final charge over days 4 and 5. Northland squared up against an unbeaten Wellington on day 4 and got across the line 3 – 2 before rolling Poverty Bay 4 -1 in the afternoon, the week ended on a high with a 3 – 2 victory over the host province Otago in the final round with Iain Power winning his last two holes for a 1 up victory and a team win. A week that started with so much promise didn’t quite live up to the hype but a fantastic effort by the North-
land Masters to regain their composure and confidence after a tough start to the competition. Northland ended the week in 10th position, which was a considerable effort after losing their first five matches. Individual results for the week: 1 – Lyn Tugaga: 1.5 wins, 2 – Iain Power: 2 wins, 3 – Scott Wilson: 4.5 wins, 4 – Gavin Ashwell: 2 wins, 5 – Bob Shirley: 5 wins.
ASB SECONDARY SCHOOL SPORTS AWARDS
Congratulations to all Northland players who were representing their schools and region at the ASB Secondary School Sports Awards held in October. Representing the boys: Bradley Foster (Whangaroa College), Tarrin Rous (Rodney College) and Julian Fowler (WBHS). Representing the girls: Soktaera Sean (WGHS), Soktaerodh Sean (WGHS) and Belinda May (Kamo High). The honours on the night were taken by Julian Fowler and Belinda May, both very deserving recipients of the award – Well done to everybody!

amassed over her three rounds of nine. Fellow club member and past-president Maurice Penney won the top men’s division with 62 points. Six new masters were decided on November 12 after three days of competition in four women’s and two men’s divisions, split by handicap. Northland player Liz McQuinn, at 50 points, was runner-up in division one of the women with Jinni Park (Bay of Islands) just one shot back on 49 points. Only one point separated the top-three placegetters in the women’s division two with Gail Cash (Warkworth) finishing on 55 points, and Bella Boston (Warkworth) and Rosalind Cunningham (Wainui) both finishing on 54 points. Boston moved into the runner-up spot on count-back. Jenny Calder (Helensville) had a convincing win in division three, with 62 points from her three rounds, six shots ahead of the field. Tied on 56 points were Cherri Grant (Wainui) and Pam Bosch (Warkworth). Grant pipped Bosch on count-back for the runner-up title. It was a clean sweep for Ngunguru in the women’s fourth division with the top three places all awarded to players from the challenging nine-hole course out from the Whangarei heads. They must breed them tough that way. Val Going won with 64 points, runner-up Kathryn McIntyre was on 58, and Sheila MacKen-
zie was two shots back on 56. Two men’s divisions were awarded, again split by handicap. Bruce Ormiston finished on 54 points behind Penney in division one. Garth Butler won division
two with 60 points and Rod Young followed on 53. All are Bay of Islands members. Since Women’s Golf New Zealand, as it was then known, introduced 9-Hole Golf in 1996 the game has grown to become a significant membership class and option. More than 8000 golfers nationwide have adopted the shorter format. New Zealand introduced an ‘18-hole handicap’ listing on the DotGolf handicap system that changed all players to an 18hole handicap regardless of membership class. This change come about earlier in the year, whereas the New Zealand 9-Hole Masters has always welcomed players from either handicap class. “A huge part of this tournament’s ethos is to have a fun 27-hole event over three days in a location that is also a great holiday destination,” said Tournament Director Denise Langdon. “Accordingly, any player is welcome with players from abroad encouraged.” In the past three years, more than 300 people have travelled to the ‘winterless’ north to play at Kerikeri’s Bay of Islands Golf Course. Players from Australia and the US have joined a myriad of local players. This year’s tournament attracted players from 18 different clubs. Most players were aged over 65 years of age, said Langdon, and it was clear they delighted
in the three-days of ‘away’ golf, as well as the several social functions included. “However, after three years, it is felt prudent to now move the tournament to another welcoming club that’s located within a sought-after holiday destination,” said Langdon. PaR nz Golfing Holidays manages the event with New Zealand Golf’s sanction. Details and dates for 2017 will be made public shortly, but there is a strong possibility that a Hawke’s Bay venue will be confirmed. Seventy-seven starters saw most of the foursomes finish their rounds in just over four hours. The Pukekohe and Waikare teams found their playing mojos, scoring 164 and 159-team points respectively to win the round in their respective Plate and Shield divisions. This result saw Waikare finish overall season runner-up for the COVIC Shield, behind the season-long dominant Huntly team who as expected were the deserved 2016 Shield Champions by a massive 8-point margin. They confirmed their victory through a solid 3rd round placing and ahead of their nearest challengers Maramarua and Clarks Beach, who fin-

ished in a share of 3rd equal. In the COVIC Plate defending champions Pakuranga had their worst round result of the finals being 3rd on the day, but they too had done enough to retain the 2016 Plate trophy by 3-points from runners-up Waiuku, with Pukekohe 1-point back in 3rd place. Onewhero had their best round result for some time, finishing second with 155-points, enough to avoid the wooden spoon. That honour went to Wattle Downs, a surprising result for a team that sparkled in the qualifiers and only narrowly missed making the Shield division for the final rounds. Clarks Beach ended the season on a high by successfully defending the COVIC Challenge Cup against a keen Manukau team 41 to 31 points, thanks in part to Chris Hone’s 12.5 - 5.5 victory. This performance was enough for Chris to be awarded the Craig Smith Pukekohe Golf Shop Player of the Day award and don the CLARET JACKET. Their first CUP challenger next season is Awhitu to be played in the first qualifying round back at Maramarua on Friday 10th March. COVIC players close their 2016 season with a COVIC Championships at Hauraki on Wednesday 23rd November 2016. They will then start the 2017 season with a Pairs Combined Stableford event at Clarks Beach on Friday 10th February, where the competing clubs’ best three pairs aggregate team scores will determine the winner of the Vedi-Veni-Vici Cup. WAIKATO HAURAKI STALWARTS WIN COVIC GOLD MEDALS
The yearlong COVIC golf season was concluded with the Craig Smith Pukekohe Golf Shop sponsored COVIC Championships on Wednesday 23rd November 2016. They were played at the Hauraki Golf Club in brilliant early summer sunshine with no wind, on a well-presented golf course with some slick greens. It was an individual Net competition designed to find and celebrate the best players who have represented their club teams throughout the 2016 inter-club pennants season, where Huntly GC and Pakuranga GC were the COVIC Shield and Plate Club Champions. Given their home course advantage it was probably unsurprising that four of the top six places went to Hauraki players, including the top two Gold Medal positions on the top step of the COVIC podium. John Hughes playing off an 18-handicap won the Senior Gold Medal with an impressive 66 net score, while Lyal Harris playing of a 24-handicap won the Junior Gold Medal with an extraordinary 62 net score. Lyal was also awarded the Claret Jacket Player of the Day Award also sponsored by the Craig Smith Pukekohe Golf Shop. [See attached photos of the prizewinners]. In the senior division (0 to 20 handicaps) Maramarua leftie Cecil York took out the silver medal prize with a 66 net

score, only missing out on Gold Medal on a count back of scores, while the bronze medal was awarded to Hauraki’s Warwick Davey with a 67 net. In the junior division (handicaps over 20), Hauraki’s Merv Messenger (24) was chuffed to pip Waikare’s Graham Buchanan (24) for the silver medal also on count back, with Graham receiving the bronze medal. The ‘most golf’ bar handle shout went to Ron Davis with a tragic score of 13-shots over his official handicap. The fact that only eighteen players from a total of fifty-six actually managed to beat the par 71 on net, suggests that the majority of visitors found the course difficult to play. All in all it was an excellent day of veterans golf, thanks largely to the hard work of Hauraki Convenor Ross Brydon and his excellent support team. The 2017 COVIC season will commence with a Pairs Combined Stableford event
at Clarks Beach on Friday 10th February, where the competing clubs’ best three pairs aggregate team scores will determine which of the twelve clubs win of the Vedi-Veni-Vici (they came, they saw and they conquered) Cup, that will be presented by the immediate past convenor Corporal Graham Jones. Twilight delight The twilight season has arrived at the Te Aroha Golf Club! This year we are running golf as usual, along with the new addition of footgolf on the club’s new course. The golf programme runs every Thursday night, with a free summer membership up for grabs to a lucky winner each night. Ambrose teams can be made up of 3,4 or 5 or individuals can enter, with entry costs just $5 per night. tarting times are 5pm to 6pm. Footgolf happens every Monday night.
WHANGAMATA WOMEN’S MASTERS
The 2016 Seeka Whangamata Women’s Masters was held recently at the Whangamata Golf Club. 136 contestants from 35 clubs from as far as Martinborough participated in the 54 Hole three day event. Restricted to women golfers over the age of 40 and split into two divisions based on median age, Division 1 was 40 to 63 and Division 2 was 64 +. The tournament had a full field 13 hours after entries opened back in July. It was a very busy weekend of golf and entertainment which included a welcome brunch on the Friday morning, a fashion parade put on by local retailer Shimmers, a gig by a local ukulele group and a Sports draw on the Saturday night. Many local retailers contributed goods and discount vouchers to support the event in different ways and the starter pack for each entrant was a prize in itself. Brigit Holford (The Grange) led the field after Rd 1 with a round of 77, but on the Saturday Julie Gee (Riverside – and an ex Whangamata local), hit her straps with a two over par 73 to take the lead and held it through Sunday to come out Open
Gross winner with a total of 234, seven shots ahead of Brigit Holford with a further six shots back to Joanne McDonald (New Plymouth) on 247. The Open Nett winner was a repeat of last year with Jeanne Wilson (Whangamata) again taking the honours with a nett 190. Div. 1 Nett winner was Dianne Tempest (Whangamata) and Div. 2 Nett winner was Diane McGarald, making it a clean sweep by the locals. The Open Stableford winner was Bev Fuller of Remuera with 125 points. Div. 1 winner was Jan Gyenge (Mt Maunganui) and Div.2 winner was Rosemarie Rutherford (Whangamata). The Whangamata Golf Club wants to thank all participants, sponsors and volunteers for contributing to a memorable weekend of golf and entertainment. HARCOURTS STROKEPLAY CHAMPIONSHIPS
The fourth and final round of the Harcourts Strokeplay Championships were played on Saturday on the Centennial course at Taupo. After the first round in the Junior section (handicaps 17 +) Dave Carllton had held a commanding lead of over 10 shots. Unfortunately he could not maintain his fine form and it was slowly pegged back. In the final round Colin Giles played 6 under his handicap and took the lead to win the competition with a four round total of 344. Dave finished three shots back on 347 followed by Terry Eady, 357 and Colin Ridge, 360. The Intermediates (10 to 16) had been much closer but Mikki McLaughlin held on to his lead to win with a four round total of 321. Travis Delich was second on 324 followed by Laurie Hema, 33 and Roy Menton 344. The Seniors (0 to 9) was also very close. Last years winner Jason McIntosh missed a round while he was away representing the Bay of Plenty. It left a former BOP rep. Kent Skellern to take his chance. He won the Senior division with a four round total of 302 followed by Grant Hill, 305, Bruce Klue, 311 and David Pearson 314. The Alum n Glass player of the day was taken out by Colin Giles, nett 66, followed by Dave Baxter, John Yates and Tony Hay on 69.

Congratulations to all the winners (pictured left – Jennifer Crawley [9 hole], Sara Deam [senior], Joanne Jones [Intermediate], Bronwyn Farquharson [Junior]) and competitors of the individual championships. Congratulations also to the Maraenui team on winning the district Gross Stableford Rosebowl competition.
HASTINGS RETAIN GREENWOOD CUP
The Hastings Golf Club have retained the Greenwood Cup in a very close affair with Maraenui, In the final match between the two clubs, it was 5 all with 5 holes to play but Hastings GC scraped a half back to make the final score Hastings 5 ½ to Maraenui’s 4 ½. This meant Hastings had 7 wins on the board and Maraenui 6 wins, so reverse that result and obviously the result goes the other way. Onga Onga were winners of the Radonich Trophy (best team of the Country Clubs). In the individual players section, the winner of the Bretherton Buist Cup was Carlos Tawera from Hastings who had 7 wins from 7 matches. Also in the running for the cup was Kris Bower (also Hastings) who also had 7 from 7 but by virtue of starting at no.5 Carlos, as opposed to Kris at no.10, Carlos wins the cup. Also unbeaten were a youngster in Mako Thompson (6 wins and a ½) and seasoned campaigner Stu Duff (5 wins and 2 1/2s)
DANNEVIRKE WOMEN BRING HOME ASCHOTT CUP

HAWKES BAY 4-COURSE GOLF &
Over 110 golfers and partners from 45 golf clubs in New Zealand, Australia, the USA and Fiji have been competing in a 4-day event, playing Maraenui, Napier, Hawkes Bay and Hastings golf clubs. The men’s and women’s field was split into 5 divisions by handicap with a concurrent stroke play competition for lower handicap players. The main competition being stableford, with daily prizes, awarded, recognising the top scores at each course. Shirley Otton (Nelson) won the women’s 1st division with 151 points, and a 6- point margin over Sherrill Jeeves (Sherwood Park) in second place. Kathy Maxwell (Windross Farm) was awarded 3rd place, one shot behind, on a count-back from Judy Hart (Remuera). Maxine Kavalli (Purangi) led all week in the women’s 2nd division, finishing on 154 points, a 6-shot lead over the field. Younghwa Lee (Waitemata) was placed 2nd, on 148 points, and in 3rd, Gretchen Brown (Feilding) one shot back. Another Purangi member, Tim Barlett took line honours in the men’s 1st division with a final score of 158 stableford points, the largest winning margin over the 5 groups. 17 shots back was Brian Murphy (Marenui), with Philip Green (Nudgee, Australia) one shot back, on 140 points, taking 3rd place. John Henley (Royal Auckland) with 146 points, won the men’s 2nd division, 3 shots ahead of Jack Callesen (Omanu) on 143. Fellow Omanu club-member Kevin Powell came 3rd, with 142 points. Bill Potze (Mt Maunganui) had a solid week leading in all four rounds, and finishing on 159 to be awarded the top place in the men’s 3rd division, 4 shots ahead of the field. Bob Walker (Purangi) in 2nd, with Peter Wright (Waihi) in 3rd on 146 points. Eleanor Hodson (New Plymouth), an accomplished Taranaki representative won the Women’s Stroke Award with rounds of 88, 85, 82 and 90 for a final score of 345. Two men were tied on 320, and were recognised as the leading stroke play scores – Craig Maxwell (78, 79, 82,

81) and Kevin Yeo (81, 77, 81, 81) sharing the top prize. Maxwell is a member of Auckland’s recently opened Windross Farm, Yeo a visiting golfer from Australia, Redcliff his home club. The tournament was managed and promoted by PaR nz Golfing Holidays, New Zealand’s largest golf tour and tournament operator, supported by the four clubs and in conjunction with Napier City Council, the Art Deco Society and Hawkes Bay Tourism. International brands, TaylorMade, Bosch, Neff and Gaggenau were the main tournament sponsors along with one of Hawkes Bay’s leading wineries, Trinity Hill. PaR nz Golfing Holidays sponsor TomTom complemented the prestigious group of partners to the event. In addition to the four rounds, players and partners enjoyed local cuisine at each of the courses, with wine matching from Trinity Hill. PaR nz Golfing Holidays are expecting that the tournament will, at least, double if not increase significantly and already have forward registrations from Australian golfers. PaR nz Golfing Holidays are in discussions with the four clubs to set dates in November and the 2017 programme, which will be released shortly, along with complementary golf packages for overseas players. Planning and course preparations are underway for the 2017 Bush Classic which will be held over the weekend of 14th and 15th January 2017. Now in it’s 14th year the Bush Classic has earned its reputation as being one of the best and friendliest summer golfing event in the Tararua District. The Bush Classic is an outstanding 36 hole competition played over two great but different courses. Day one will see you tee off at the Eketahuna Golf Club. Defined by locals as the “best summer golf course south of the Black Stump” the Eketahuna course often challenges even the best NZ professionals during their annual Pro-Am tournament held jointly with Masterton Club. Day two and you are teeing off at the Pahiatua Golf Club (The Jewel of the Bush). This beautifully laid out course will determine who will become the deserved Bush Classic Champion for 2017. Located near the iconic Tui Brewery at Mangatainoka the course offers some deceptively easy holes but names such as “The Wrecker” have not been given by the locals without reason. Prizegiving will be held in the club rooms after the end of the days play. Last year we had entries from over 37 different clubs over the lower North Island. This year we have already recieved
over 60 entries. This tournament never fails to be fully booked out so don’t delay. Further details and an entry form can be downloaded from the club website: www. eketahuna-golf.com January 2017 will also see the running of the 36 hole Eketahuna - Masterton Pro-Am competition. This years competition will be held during the weekend of 28-29 January. The Eketahuna - Masterton Pro-Am is the premier event on the Wairarapa golfing calendar ‘showcasing’ local golf on two very different and unique courses. Since its inauguration in 2004 the Eketahuna - Masterton Pro-Am has provided a wonderful opportunity for local amateur golfers to play with some of the best professional golfers in New Zealand such as Tim Wilkinson; Mark Brown and current Olympian Ryan Fox. The 1st golfing day of the event commences at 10:am at the Eketahuna Golf Club with a welcome by the club president to sponsors and competitors alike. A meal and refreshment will be available after the completion of play. The 2nd day is hosted by the Masterton Golf Club. The golf will be followed by the award ceremony and a buffet held within the clubhouse. So get three mates together and join the fun. Cost per 3 man team is $645. Further details will be posted on the clubs’ website in the near future.

members, John& Linda Dow with an impressive 48 points, and they each won a Pestells voucher for a Christmas Ham – so it’s all round to John & Linda’s for that Christmas lunch ! They were closely followed by Gillian Williams and John Black on 47 points, and on 46 points were, Lindsay & Josie Rosser, David Young & Richard Grimes, Sally Moore & Andrea Chapman and Todd Buchanan & Dennis Andrews – and all the above also won vouchers to treat themselves at Pestells for their Christmas meats. A big thank you to all at Pestells for their continued support of this tournament and thanks also go to everyone who took part in what was another great day at Nelson Golf Club.
UPDATE ON THE FIDELITY LIFE OPEN TOURNAMENT HELD AT NELSON GOLF CLUB
The recent Fidelity Life Open was a huge success with a full field enjoying the windy conditions on a wonderfully prepared golf course. Nelson Golf Club has suffered over the years from some less than perfect fairways, but a recent deep sowing project has had some amazing results and the course is in its best condition for some time. Superintendant Brendon O’Hara and his team were congratulated by all the participants on their fine work in the preparation of the course. Fidelity Life have been long supporters of this tournament and it has become a real “must play” tournament in the region. The prize table is second to none for a one day event and they are to be congratulated for their fine sponsorship of this fantastic golf day. The winner of the tournament was Nelson club member Mathew Oldridge, who was a very late entry, when Mathew came down to the club only to practice, he was told that there had been a late call off – so he did the decent thing, paid his entry fee and filled the space on the start sheet. A great decision, as he took away the fabulous Fidelity Life Cup trophy along with a Taylor Mad M2 driver, worth a cool $720...nice work Mathew! Plus4 Insurance Solutions sponsored a Hole in One prize of a brand new Toyota car supplied by Bowater Motors at the 17th hole. However, no-one was able to find that Ace in the Hole and walk away with the big prize. As a consolation though, 6 players that were nearest to the pin on the 17th went into a shoot out on the 18th hole. In front of a packed balcony, the pressure was on the get closest to the pin from the 90 mtr marker. Club Champion Sam Nicholls showed his class and won the shoot out claiming a wonderful prize of a Taylor Made M2 fairway club. Other results were as follows: Women’s division: Korrin Black 35 points c/b Val Wilson 35 points c/b Shirley Winter 33 points c/b Lesley Baxter 33 points c/b Gaye MacKenzie 32 points Men’s Division 1: Nick Thomsen 41 points Brendon Jefferey 40 points c/b Kam Clarke 40 points c/b Rod Baxendine 39 points c/b Andy Drummond 39 points c/b Ash Bradley 38 points c/b
36
Nathan Moore 38 points c/b Men’s Division 2: Derek Drysdale 39 points Paul Yates 37 points John Gifkins 36 points Bryan Hemi 35 points c/b Eric Brown 35 points c/b Craig Chalmers 34 points c/b Sarel Nienaber 34 points c/b Men’s Division 3: Lawrie Currie 39 points c/b Maurice Woodhouse 39 points c/b Richard Bell 38 points c/b Dennis Andrews 38 points c/b Don Pierson 37 points c/b Johnny Corby 37 points c/b Dave Harley 36 points

New Zealand for the second consecutive year at the annual World Golf Awards in Portugal. It won over nominations from nearly all of Golf Tourism New Zealand’s marquee golf courses. World Golf Awards serves to celebrate and reward excellence in golf tourism, world class courses and golf destinations. Votes are made by professionals working within the golf travel and tourism industry – senior executives, travel buyers, tour operators, agents and media professionals. Votes may also be cast by the public (golf tourism consumers). World Golf Awards Managing Director Christopher Frost said: “It is an honour for us to recognise Clearwater Golf Course with the title of New Zealand’s Leading Golf Course. With golf hospitality on an unstoppable rise around the world, with more people choosing to play each year, it is destinations such as this which set the global benchmark for the industry.”
KAIAPOI GOLF CLUB
Kaiapoi Golf Club’s Senior Men’s title was contested by a father and son, Ron and Ryans Adams. To win their semi finals they had to beat a couple of young guns Ron shot a 68 and Ryan a 67. On the day youth prevailed and after 27 holes Ryan was six under par and had won 10 and 9. The both played some great golf and the match was played in great spirit, the respect and great bond they have was obvious for all to see. To make the story more interesting Ron had to play his grandson Mitchell in the first knock out round, this match went to the 19th hole. Mitchell has only been playing for a year and is already a single figure golfer – we have a great junior program at Kaiapoi and a fantastic coach in Jason Tilley. Mitchell is the fourth generation to play at Kaiapoi. Ron has been a member at Kaiapoi for over 50 years and 2 years ago he was made a life member. He has been running the Summer Twilight competition for 20 years, with fields of 60-70 players every week. Ryan and his brother Leigh have been playing since they were wee nippers, both boys have played in the Kaikoura Cup and Ryan has participated for years in Woodward Cup – Canterbury’s top interclub competition.
OTAGO SOUTHLAND WOMEN’S SOUTH ISLAND INTERPROVINCIAL WON BY CANTERBURY
Canterbury convincingly won the South Island women’s interprovincial team tournament in fine conditions on the Russley course in Christchurch last month. The home team put up a commanding performance with four team victories as well as winning 26.5 games of a possible 32 during the four rounds. Individual records showed Canterbury’s dominance as No1 Juliana Hung, No5 Olive Tapu and No7 Kim Moggach won all four of their matches. The only other player in the 40-strong field to achieve this was Otago No3 Annabel Evans, who secured some good scalps during the event. With four points and 16.5 games, Otago finished second on a countback of games from Southland which managed only 12 games from the four rounds. It was a fitting result as Otago beat Southland 5.5-2.5 on Saturday but lost two points when the team was surprisingly beaten by Aorangi on Sunday. Evans had four good wins at No3 while the other younger player, Abigael Crawford, also acquitted herself well at No1 beating Aorangi’s Sharon Bradford as well as the experienced Emily Stenhouse from Tasman. It is the second time this year that Otago has beaten Southland, having ended a six-year drought to win the Salisbury Cup at Balmacewen last month. The return of Jo Hicks-Beach at No2 and Susan Greig at No4 boosted the Otago team for the event and Raewyn Devlin at No. 7 contributed with three wins. Hicks-Beach and Greig had two wins each after not having played in previous
December 2016
interprovincial fixtures this year.
CANTERBURY WIN MEN’S 2016 SOUTH ISLAND INTERPROVINCIAL
A barrage of birdies by Canterbury No4 Matt McLean on Saturday morning sealed the result of the South Island interprovincial teams tournament, which was played over four rounds at St Clair last month McLean was two down to Otago’s Brandon Hodgson with four holes to play but made birdies on 6, 7, 8 and 9 to clinch a valuable half with an in-form Hodgson. At the end of the match, Canterbury prevailed by a 4.5 to 3.5 margin, giving the team a point while Otago received none.As Canterbury was unlikely to lose to Aorangi, Southland or Tasman, the winner of the fixture was decided at the halfway stage. Canterbury finished first with four points and 23 games, while Otago matched the game tally of 23 but had only three points. Otago No1 Fraser MacLachlan joined team-mates Ryan Bellamy (No7) and Michael Ormandy (No8) with four wins. For Canterbury, 16-year-old Hiroki Miya (No5) and Reid Hilton (No6) had four wins, while Brandon Hodgson (Otago), Tom Parker (Canterbury) and Matt Tautari (Southland) all emerged unbeaten in their four matches. As well as losing to Canterbury on Saturday, Otago beat Southland by a 6 to 2 margin and had to amass as many games against Aorangi and Tasman yesterday. The team beat Aorangi 7 to 1 and Tasman 6.5 to 1.5, which helped the team match Canterbury’s game tally. Tasman was third and Southland fourth, while Aorangi emerged with no team win and only seven games out of 32 played. The standard of the golf was high, although incessant rain yesterday afternoon put paid to many birdie chances. Otago No5 Michael Smith had three wins, his only loss being to Miya on Saturday, but he also featured in a gutsy fightback yesterday. Playing the front nine second, he lost a ball on the third to go three down to Tasman’s Matthew Grimes with six holes to play. He won three of the next four to go back to square and when Grimes missed a vital putt on the final green, took the honours.

Timaru golfer Jim Annett can’t quite believe he has nailed his fourth hole-in-one. Annett hit his perfect shot on the 15th at Levels, using a five wood to carry 147m

HIGHFIELD - PENNEY SALVER CHAMPIONS
The Penney Salver Final was played at Gleniti last month between Pleasant Point A and Highfield in perfect calm, sunny weather and the course in excellent condition. It was the Highfield team of from left, Neville Petersen, Ian Rippin, Neville Newburn, Dave Braddick, Ash
Cunnard and Bill Stevenson that turned the tables on top qualifier Pleasant Point defeating them 11-6. Highfield last won the Penney Salver 13 years ago in 2003 so they had good reason to celebrate their victory
WOMEN’S CRYSTALP RINGERS TOURNAMENT
The 2016 Women’s Crystalp Ringers Tournament was held last month at Amberley Golf Club where 25 clubs competed in a pairs aggregate stableford. North Canterbury forgot about the earthquakes for a day that was calm, hot and sunny, and the players were treated to a sumptuous afternoon tea. The Amberley course was in splendid condition but it did have its challenges as reflected in the generally modest results. Winner of the 18 hole competition was the Ellesmere club, represented by Heather Templeton (33 points) and Marg Lowery (39) with an aggregate 72 stableford points. Other prize winners were: Scargill (Mary Samuela-Anderson and Janet Murray) 71 points. Hororata (Raewyn Kars and Barbara Bryant) 68 points on countback. Rawhiti (Kyrene O’Donnell and Jude Davis) 68 points. McLeans Island (Sue Collins and Ailex Barnett) 67 points. The nine hole competition was won by Serena Matthews from Ellesmere with 25 points. Runner-up was Sarah Rutherford from Rangiora on 21 points.
