olf can be a frustrating game. We all experience it. It doesn’t matter who you are, whether it is the best player in the world, the worst player in the world or anyone inbetween. We all have different levels of expectation and when we don’t meet them we become frustrated. How can we play so well one day and so poorly the next, is a question we all would have asked ourselves. At the time of writing this column, I had been going through a frustrating period. I had been playing poorly for several weeks and what was frustrating was that I had been practicing hard in order to rectify the situation. But the practice wasn’t paying off. At times I thought I practiced
Coping with the frustrations of golf well but when it came to the golf course the scores were not reflected as I might have hoped. That’s frustrating. Adding to the frustration was the feeling of letting down a playing partner. I had played the semi-final of a mixed doubles event at my club and my poor form continued. What was frustrating was even if I had only played averagely well we would have gone close to winning the match, because my partner had played very well. When that happens, that is frustrating. I am a keen golfer but far from a top golfer. So when I don’t play well it doesn’t really matter too much, except that I lose the haggle we regularly play for. Consequently that helps ease my frustration levels. But what about a top golfer?
They are playing in much more important events and the lack of good form could be much more frustrating. Such an instance was mentioned to me recently. The father of a top player said you used to be able to tell from a couple of fairways afar whether his son was playing well or not — slumped shoulders, dropped chin, lagging behind were a clear indication the player was not happy. The father said it is no longer the case. The player had learned to accept frustration because it was just part of the game. We all want to play well but it simply doesn’t happen as often as we would like. It’s just the way it is. The father said, as a consequence, his son was a better player for it.
The same father said another top player who had moved into the serious side of the game was having trouble coping with the frustrations of the game. As a result the player’s form had slumped and until the player learned to cope with the frustration he would continue to struggle. It’s a hard game, sometimes. I will admit I openly express disappointment when I play a poor shot. But I like to think I get over it very quickly and soon after I am talking to my playing partners about the weather, the value or otherwise of a bit-coin or Donald Trump’s latest tweet. Mmmmm. Maybe my playing partners might prefer that I slumped my shoulders, dropped my chin and lagged behind.

Top New Zealand golfers queuing up for national open GOLF NEWS
N
ew Zealand’s top golfers are lining up to play the New Zealand Open in March. Already confirmed are last year’s winner Michael Hendry, European Tour player Ryan Fox, PGA tour player Tim Wilkinson who is returning home for the first in more than a decade and United States-based Steven Alker. The open will be held from March 1-4 at the Millbrook and The Hills courses near Queenstown and it will be the 99th staging of the event. Hendry last year became the first New Zealander in 14 years to win the open and despite a potential second invitation to play in the World Golf Championship in Mexico at the same time he will be back to defend his title. “It wasn’t really a hard decision,’’ Hendry said of the clash of dates. ``Mexico is an amazing event and the chance to play against the best players in the world is a big thing for a player of my stature. “But you don’t just win it once (the New Zealand Open) and forget about it. You want to keep coming back and winning it. As far as I am concerned it is my trophy and I am not going to let it go.” Hendry followed his playoff victory at Millbrook Resort with another outstanding year on the Japan Tour that included seven top-10 finishes including second in the Mizumo Open and third in the Mitsui Sumitoma Masters. “I would give my year in Japan a seven out of 10. I was consistent, which is something that we strive for. I’ve played 26 events and only missed three cuts. The one thing that marks it down is not winning again in Japan. “Winning the New Zealand Open was a great thing and something that was very special for me. But I play golf to win and I’ve come very, very close in a lot of golf tournaments this year so it’s been a great year but one tinged with
Michael Hendry following his win in last years New Zealand Open.
a bit of frustration also.” If he was to win again this year he would become the 12th person to win in consecutive years, a feat not achieved since American Corey Pavin did so 32 years ago. “You never go into a tournament expecting to win, you go in hoping to win,’’ Hendry said. `` I suppose now with my track record around those courses I know I am going to have a pretty good chance if I have a good summer in terms of preparation and get myself ready for the event properly. If I do that then I can put myself in a position to defend. Fox, meanwhile, has a similar attitude to Hendry when it comes to the New Zealand Open.
“As a Kiwi it is the fifth major for us,” Fox said. “My career would not be complete without winning a New Zealand Open. All the best Kiwi players over the years have this on their resume. I would like to join those guys at some point.” Fox has had a very busy year and was delighted with what he had achieved in his first year on the European Tour. “To play the (tour) final series, play in two majors and a WCG event in my first year on the European Tour is something I wouldn’t have dreamed of at the start of the year. I am very happy with how it turned out.” He had modest goals stepping into unchartered waters in 2017, just wanting to retain his full playing rights for
2018. The highlight was his threeweek run where he placed sixth in the French Open and a share of fourth at the Irish and Scottish Opens. “I finally put it together at the French Open and from that point it took the pressure off the rest of the year. I played well at the Irish and Scottish where I gave myself an outside chance and felt pretty comfortable. “I probably played a little too much golf. We play a lot all over the world and I’ve done a lot of travelling and the body and mind have felt that in the back end of the year. I will learn from that. Fox finished sixth in last year’s and the 2014 opens and was 11th in 2016.

K J Choi confirmed for NZ Open
orea’s K J Choi, arguably the most successful golfer to come out of Asia, will compete at the New Zealand Open near Queenstown in March. Choi, one of the top 25 players on the all-time money list, joins defending champion Michael Hendry and fellow Kiwis Ryan Fox, Tim Wilkinson and Steven Alker, among the first to confirm for New Zealand’s premier golf tournament, sponsored by ISPS Handa. The open, which is co-sanctioned with the PGA Tour of Australasia and the Asian Tour, and in partnership with the Japan Golf Tour, will be held at Millbrook Resort and The Hills from March 1-4. Choi is probably the highest profile foreign golfer to compete in the open since Tiger Woods, but it will not be his first time in this country. “I visited New Zealand as part of a winter training group in 1995 and I remember the beautiful trees on the golf course,’’ Choi said. ``I can’t believe it’s already been 21 years. I’m very excited and can’t wait to play in front of
the New Zealand golf fans.’’ The Korean-born 47-year-old has enjoyed 20 professional wins worldwide, with eight wins on the PGA Tour including the 2011 Players Championship and has amassed more $NZ50 million in prizemoney. “I’m motivated to continue playing because of the fans. This is my 19th season on the PGA Tour and 25th year playing professional golf,’’ Choi said. ``I certainly would not have achieved what I have been able to do without the fan support. Knowing this I’ve always tried to repay the fans by playing my best out on the golf course. “I’m still hungry to achieve. It’s not easy but I really want to send a message to young players that it begins with diligence and preparation. I’m no longer the young-gun but I play every tournament believing in myself that I can do great things. “I would love to be able to win a few more times on the PGA Tour which is one of my biggest goals, and I am also looking forward to three years’ time when I can join the Champions Tour.’’ New Zealand Open tourna-
ment chairman John Hart said Choi’s entry is further demonstration of the burgeoning international status of the event, which will be broadcast to 151 countries. “It will be a thrill to have KJ with us and an opportunity for golf fans to watch one of the world’s most accomplished players and one of its most recognisable and likeable figures,” Hart said. Choi was a former power-lifter but was told to try golf when the sport was first introduced into Korea. That proved a life-changer. Following his early years learning the game in New Zealand, he began his professional career on the Asian Tour and the Japan Tour before finally earning his PGA Tour card in 2001. He set a number of firsts for Korean golfers – the first to gain a PGA Tour card, and the first to win a PGA Tour event in 2002 when he won twice. He followed this with a further win on the PGA Tour and the German Open the following year. By 2007 he had moved into the top-10 in the world, peaking the following year with a world

ranking of No 5. His Players Championship victory came in 2011 at TPC Sawgrass when he beat David Toms in a playoff. He has also played in the World Cup for Korea three times and in the Presidents’ Cup on three occasions. Now based in Texas, he has retained his PGA Tour status because of his place among the top 25 on the all-time tour money-list.
Tickets for the open are on sale. Anyone who buys a ticket before February 6 will go into a draw for the ``ultimate fan inside-the-ropes experience’’. On the final day the winner and a friend will walk with the leading Kiwi pro inside the ropes. They will also win a tournament shirt and cap, plus two tickets to the VIP champions’ lounge on the first three days. »» Details: www.nzopen.co.nz »» Tickets: www.ticketek.co.nz
CADDIES WANTED FOR NEW ZEALAND OPEN
M
ore than 120 caddies will be required for the 2018 New Zealand Open from March 1-4 at Millbrook and The Hills golf clubs. At last year’s event, we had several caddies needed on the Sunday, either caddying for professionals or assisting some of the amateur players with one of our young caddies on the bag of runner-up, Brad Kennedy. In 2015, one of our volunteer caddies, Jaimes Wood from the Royal Wellington Golf Club, had the experience of carrying the bag for the winner Jason Zunic. Jaimes described it as an “incredible experience that he will never forget”.
With the format of 132 professional players and their amateur partners teeing off Millbrook and The Hills on the Thursday and then swapping courses on the Friday, we will require approximately 120 caddies for the professional and amateur players. On the Friday evening, there will be a pro-am cut of the top 30 amateurs and top 60 professionals (plus ties), who will go on to play at Millbrook on the Saturday and Sunday. Caddies will need to pre-register online by February 15 and be on site at Millbrook no later than Wednesday, February 28 at 10am. Most of the caddy jobs will be pre-assigned ahead of arriving at the
golf course with those arriving on the Monday or Tuesday being given preference. There is a $39 cost to register as a caddy, and all caddies receive a ISPS Handa New Zealand Open logo-ed golf shirt and cap to wear while caddying and to take home as a souvenir. Caddies should be social or serious golfers with a good level of fitness to carry the golf bag around Millbrook and The Hills golf courses. To register, please visit our official ISPS Handa New Zealand Open website, nzopen.co.nz and click on the volunteers tab for the caddy registration page.

Interprovincials win concludes a great year for Mark Hutson GOLF NEWS
N
ew Zealand Strokeplay champion Mark Hutson capped a top year when North Harbour beat Auckland in the final of the Interprovincial’s Championship. Hutson headed the North Harbour team which was unbeaten in eight games of the Interprovincials held at the Mangawhai Golf Club in North Auckland last month. It was the 10th year Toro had sponsored the tournament. Hutson, who has been in the North Harbour team for four years, said being part of a winning team was a rare feeling in golf. “It feels really cool to be part of a team, golf is such an individual sport — so to do this with all my mates feels great,” Hutson said. “It’s pretty awesome, the boys have done a fantastic job and haven’t lost a game all week. I couldn’t be more happy for them.” Hutson had won the New Zealand Strokeplay at Hastings in March, when he led from start to finish, and also been one of the New Zealand representatives in the Asia-Pacific Amateur in Wellington in October. “It’s been a busy year and I have played a lot of golf. It’s been an awesome ride to be honest and after a few career highlights, I am looking forward to a little rest.” The final of the Interprovincial became a battle of the bridge with Auckland being North Harbour’s opponent. North Harbour beat Auckland 3-2 and a feature of the winning side was the record of Jake Lee, playing at No 5, who was beaten only once in the weeklong event. In the final Lee cruised to a 5 and 4 win after being an incredible seven under par through 14 holes. In addition to Lee’s win, North Harbour’s other two winning points in the final came from Hutson and Kevin Koong. Results from the semi-finals and final were:

GOLF NEWS
Auckland’s dominance continues at Interprovincials S even wins in the last nine years — that’s the outstanding record of Auckland in the women’s division of the Interprovincial Championship. The latest win came at Sherwood Park Golf Club in North Auckland last month when Auckland cruised to a 4-1 win over Canterbury in the final. Auckland was simply unstoppable throughout the week of the Toro-sponsored championship, dropping a mere 2.5 points in the pool play section of the tournament. Auckland was anchored by player of the tournament Caryn Khoo, who went undefeated at No 2 in her final appearance at the event. Carmen Lim and Siyi Keh were also unbeaten, at No 4 and 5 respectively. Khoo had been playing college golf in the United States for some time and this was his first Interprovincial for six years. She was delighted to be part of the winning side before she takes the leap to becoming a professional this year. “It feels awesome, it’s been a very long time since I was here and it’s nice to do it in my last appearance,” Khoo said. One of the Auckland side’s most successful players is Brittney Dryland. She finished things in style in the final with a 20-foot putt from the fringe of the green and the ball rocketing into the back of the cup to notch up an amazing fifth Interprovincial title. “Every year we have a great team that gets along, both on and off the course, so I’m just really happy for all of them,” Dryland said after the win. “This is my fifth win and it feels as good as the first. It’s been an awesome journey with all the Auckland girls and I love this event.”
While Auckland had a stress free final day, it was a different story in the second semi-final earlier in the day between Canterbury and North Harbour with all hopes falling on the shoulders of No 3s Catherine Bell (Canterbury) and Vaha Fapiano (North Harbour). Fapiano sent the crowd into rousing applause after a rallying comeback which was completed on the 18th hole to extend the match. However, from there Bell was able to compose herself and made a clinical up and down on the first extra hole to secure Canterbury it’s second final in three years. This meant that Bay of Plenty took home the bronze medal after a very impressive week in the far north with their most impressive 4-1 win being against Canterbury in the final round of pool play. This year’s Interprovincials will be held at the Christchurch Golf Club. Results of the semi-finals and final:-

SIX OF NEW ZEALAND’S BEST FOR ASIA-PACIFIC IN SINGAPORE
VIEWER CALL-INS NO LONGER TO BE CONSIDERED
New Zealand’s representatives for the inaugural women’s Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship have been named. The tournament will be held in Singapore at the Sentosa Golf Club from February 21-24 with each of the visiting countries allowed up to six players. New Zealand will have a full compliment with those chosen, based on world rankings and availability, being Wenyung Keh, Amelia Garvey, Juliana Hung, Britney Dryland, Rose Zheng and Caryn Khoo. The winner of the tournament receives an invitation to play in two major championships, the women’s British Open and the ANA Inspiration. The winner will also be invited by HSBC who support women’s golf around the world to play in the 11th staging of the HSBC Women’s Championship. The format of the tournament will be 72 holes of strokeplay with a total of 86 players making the full field, with approximately 20 countries being represented.
A working group led by the United States Golf Association (USGA) and The R&A has agreed to adopt a new set of protocols for video review when applying the rules of golf. The group, consisting of the PGA Tour, LPGA, PGA European Tour, Ladies European Tour and The PGA of America, as well as the governing bodies, implemented the following measures from January 1: • Assign one or more officials to monitor the video broadcast of a competition to help identify and resolve rules issues as they arise • Discontinue any steps to facilitate or consider viewer callins as part of the rules decision process In addition, the USGA and The R&A have approved the adoption of a local rule, available to eliminate the additional two-stroke penalty for failing to include a penalty on the scorecard when the player was unaware of the penalty. All of the organisations represented on the working group will introduce the local rule for this year, and the scorecard penalty will be permanently removed when the modernised rules of golf take effect on January 1 of next year. The USGA and The R&A established the video review working group in April to initiate a collaborative discussion on the role video footage can play when applying the rules, including the challenges and benefits of its use and also the issues that arise from viewer call-ins. “The level of collaboration with our partners has been both

vital and gratifying as we look to the future,” said Thomas Pagel, USGA senior director of the rules of golf and amateur status. “As technology has continued to evolve, it has allowed us to evolve how we operate, as well.” David Rickman, executive director–governance at The R&A, said: “This has clearly become an important issue in the sport that we felt we should address at this stage ahead of the implementation of the updated rules of golf in 2019. “We have concluded that whilst players should continue to be penalised for all breaches of the rules during a competition, including any that come to light after the scorecard is returned, an additional penalty for the scorecard error is not required.” The new protocols also recognise the importance of limiting video review to material obtained from the committee’s broadcast partner. Other video, such as from an individual’s smartphone or camera, will not be used under these protocols. The new protocols and local rule are the latest measures announced by the USGA and The R&A to address concerns related to video evidence. In April, decision 34-3/10 was issued to limit the use of video through the introduction of a ‘reasonable judgement’ standard and a ‘naked eye’ standard.

Hillier gains Halberg nomination D
aniel Hillier is a nomination for the emerging talent award at New Zealand’s major sports celebration, the Halberg Awards. The winner will be revealed at a function in Auckland on Thursday, February 8. Hillier is one of 13 nominations for the award which has been won in the past by Lydia Ko and who has also been a threetime winner of the sportswoman of the year award and winner of the supreme sportsperson of the year award in 2013. Hillier’s feats for last year include winning the New Zealand Amateur for a second time and becoming the first to win the tournament twice as a teenager. “It’s a pretty amazing feeling,’’ Hillier said of the award nomination. “I didn’t really see this coming so I’m pretty ecstatic. It’s been an awesome few years, playing round the world and seeing so many different places. This is the icing on the cake after a
huge amount of hard work.”
DANIEL HILLIER’S STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
Hillier made history this year becoming the first player ever to win two New Zealand Amateur Championship titles whilst still a teenager. This is one of New Zealand’s oldest sporting trophies dating back to 1893. The format is also the most challenging. Not only do you have to qualify through 36 holes of strokeplay, you then enter five rounds of knock-out golf to find the winner. Ninth at Junior World Cup 2017 Hillier was also leading Kiwi at the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in Wellington where he finished in 6th. This brings together the best golfers in the Asia-Pacific with the prize being entry into the two biggest events in the world, The Masters in the United States and The Open in Britain. He followed this up by beating
all of our Kiwi professionals at the New South Wales Open in Australia and finish as the lead Kiwi in a tie for 14th. This was a field of the best professionals in Australasia. New Zealand named top golf destination in Asia-Pacific GOLF NEWS
N
ew Zealand has been named top golf destination in the Asia-Pacific region by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO). Tourism New Zealand chief executive Stephen England-Hall said: “This is a great result and fantastic recognition of the work the industry and Tourism New Zealand have done to showcase the country’s world class golf offering. “An award like this gives New Zealand incredible international exposure as a must visit golfing destination.” The award is given to the country that has delivered a great experience for golf travellers and is voted on by golf tour operators across the globe. England-Hall added: “It’s a remarkable result considering New Zealand is up against well-established golfing destinations like Thailand, Australia and Vietnam.” IAGTO chief executive Peter Walton said: “This award signifies that golf tour operators the world over have recognised New Zealand as an established golf destination that consistently delivers a tremendous experience for golf travellers.'' New Zealand’s transition from a hidden gem to a much sought after golf destination is the combined work of the private and public sectors, which have pooled their resources and experience to position New Zealand to attract larger numbers of high spending golf visitors. The golf courses are working together to present themselves as clusters and trails and Tourism New Zealand has done a tremendous job of promoting this internationally. The proof is in the numbers, with golf tourism to New Zealand rising rapidly over the past couple of years, as more and more golfers seek the “spectacular and unique.” New Zealand hosted three major international golf events last year, the New Zealand Open in Queenstown, the New Zealand Women’s Open in Auckland and the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in Wellington.
Kauri Cliffs in Northland, an example of some of New Zealand’s spectacular golf courses.
Stephen England-Hall said: “Tourism New Zealand took full advantage of the events, running strategic marketing campaigns to maximise international exposure before and after the events.” International golfers deliver millions to the economy each year, staying significantly longer and spending more than the average visitor. New Zealand has around 400 golf courses and offers incredible variety, from ocean front subtropical courses in the north to alpine settings in the south. Golf tourism to New Zealand is seeing significant growth that is
among one of the highest being experienced worldwide. New Zealand was named undiscovered golf destination of the year in the 2002 IAGTO awards and golf destination of the year for Asia and Australasia in 2009.
THE AWARDS
The IAGTO awards, held annually by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators since 2000, showcase the best golf destinations and resorts as voted for by the world’s golf tour operators and golf travel writers. The award was announced at the International Golf Travel Market in the Palais
des Festivals et des Congrès in Cannes, France, in front of an audience of 1300 international golf tourism delegates. IAGTO is the global trade organisation for the golf tourism industry, comprising over2220 accredited golf tour operators, golf resorts, hotels, golf courses, receptive operators, airlines, tourist boards, approved media and business partners in 98 countries. IAGTO operators control over 85 percent of golf holiday packages sold worldwide and their combined annual turnover exceeded €1.5 billion last year.
NEW GOLF SCORING SYSTEM LAUNCHED IN CANADA A new golf scoring and handicap system has been launched in Canada. It is similar to the stableford format, which is easily the most popular for most club events, but promotes greater scoring for birdies and better. The system has been named golf points index (GPI) and was developed in order to provide golfers with a more equitable, engaging, entertaining and fun way to keep score and track progress. GPI awards a half a point for a double bogey, one point for a bogey, three points for a par, five points for a birdie and eight points for an eagle. All scores above a double bogey get no points. GPI founder and president Ron Zevy admits that the genesis for the system came because of frustration
12
when compared with a stroke based scoring system. “How can a birdie only be worth one stroke less than a par when it is much, much harder to achieve?” Zevy asked. While GPI is not the first points based scoring system, stableford is widely used around the world, and the PGA Tour employs a modified stableford system for one event, it is the first and only one which incorporates the point totals into a working handicap index. The GPI handicap is the average nine-hole point total over the last 180 holes played. It allows players of different levels to compete on an even playing field. A player with a GPI of 12, for example, will give an opponent with a GPI of eight a four-point lead in a nine-hole match.
January 2018
The free www.golfpointsindex.com website and mobile applications allow the golfer to enter their point totals and the system will calculate current GPI in addition to GPI for individual golf courses. A golfer can play as many or as few holes as they like and still enter a point score for their index. In addition to being free, GPI does not require the golfer to belong to a golf club in order to register. GPI will be a boon to recreational golfers who do not carry a traditional handicap but would still like a way to benchmark and track their progress. While beneficial for golfers of all ages and levels, GPI is especially geared to junior golfers, mid to high handicappers and seniors.

Clearwater wins for third time at world awards
F
or the third year in a row, Clearwater Golf Club in Christchurch was again confirmed as New Zealand’s best golf course at the 2017 World Golf Awards ceremony at La Manga Club in Spain. Following on from it’s 2015 and 2016 successes, Clearwater was also named the best course in Oceania for the third time at the ceremony, defeating Australia’s Royal Adelaide course and Fiji’s Natadola Bay Golf Course. The World Golf Awards serve to celebrate and reward excellence in golf tourism, world class courses and golf destinations. Golf tourism constitutes a vital segment in the global travel and tourism market place. Votes are cast by professionals working within the golf travel and tourism industry – senior executives, travel buyers, tour operators, agents, media professionals and the public (golf tourism consumers). John Hodge, chairman of the Clearwater Golf Club, confirmed that the award reflected the combined work of the club’s board, golf committee, members and staff. “Clearwater treats its day members and its annual members with recognition, respect and a sense of belonging,’’ Hodge said. ``The club is a great place to escape to and enjoy a day of golf on a proven championship layout, followed by great social engagement in our members' lounge.” Whilst Clearwater might not have the scenery of Queenstown, Hodge said it does have the time to give great service and “the positive comments we receive from visitors almost always focus on their human interactions at Clearwater.'' Clearwater’s general manager Andrew Bell was on hand to receive the awards in Spain. Bell said: “The opportunity to meet with over 100 other World Golf Award winners
Clearwater Golf Club in Christchurch which was named best in New Zealand for the third time
from across the globe is the best investment we can make in our own improvement in 2018. “We place a huge amount of our emphasis on creating an escape for golfers rather than putting up barriers or challenges that take away from the social value of golf and we will continue to learn by comparing our offering with the best in the world.” Ryan Brandeburg, golf specialist for Tourism New Zealand, acknowledged the importance of the global recognition earned by Clearwater Golf Club. Brandeburg said: “Clearwater’s strong showing for three years running is fur-
ther proof that New Zealand has become a legitimate golf destination.“ Golf has been a significant part of Tourism New Zealand’s strategic plan to grow international visitor numbers to New Zealand. Brandeburg added that “the golf strategy put in place by central government in 2013 is paying significant dividends, with golf tourism’s annual economic impact valued at well over $300 million to the New Zealand economy. “ Chris Frost, managing director of World Golf Awards reinforced the growth in the event stating that the 2017 World Golf Awards were the most successful to date.
‘This cements our position as the global benchmark for golf hospitality,’’ Frost said. ``It has been a pleasure to recognise so many industry leaders here at La Manga Club this evening and I hope their recognition, both by their peers and members of the public golf community, will inspire them to aim ever higher in the pursuit of excellence.” Aside from Clearwater’s success, Millbrook Resort was named as New Zealand’s best golf hotel following up on their 2014 and 2016 successes. The Hills was named as finalist in the golf clubhouse of the year.
PLAYERS SPENDING LESS TIME OVER THE BALL DID BETTER Professional golfers can achieve greater success if they spend less time standing over the ball, according to a player performance study conducted by RSM in collaboration with the European Tour. The study collected data on 47 European Tour professionals over five tournaments, 304 rounds of golf and 22,579 shots. Led by Dr Matt Bridge, senior lecturer in coaching and sports science at the University of Birmingham, the study revealed three key findings: • Spending less time over the ball could earn a European Tour player an extra €189,000 per season. • Quicker shots improve performance. A shorter time over the ball across all putts results in a 90 percent increase in the likelihood of strokes gained. • Consistency of time spent over the ball leads to a greater chance of making the cut. When players are more consistent in rounds one and two they are 50 percent more likely to make the cut compared to less consistent players. Ryder Cup player Andy Sullivan said: “Could findings like these be a potential game-changer? Absolutely. As players in a complex game with so many variables,
14
it’s crucial that we look at the data and how even tiny changes can help improve our performance. “Personally, for my game, the findings have given me a lot to think about, but I think they’ll also be of interest to the amateurs that are looking for ways to get their handicaps down.” Keith Pelley, chief executive, European Tour, said: “I’m constantly thinking about how the game of golf will evolve and what the future looks like. Without a doubt, data analytics and the kind of insights provided from the RSM player performance study will be core to that future. “The more data we can make available, the more the pro golfers, and amateurs, will be able to understand the nuances in their performance and hopefully gain that extra edge or advantage. The concept of understanding is core to the way RSM does business and I can absolutely see how that concept could support and help to shape the future game of golf.” European Tour professional Paul Waring said: “The average figure of €189,000 more a year if players improve the consistency of their routines and spend less time over the ball will certainly open a lot of eyes in
January 2018
the European Tour locker rooms. “Stats are so important in all sports and especially in golf, when you think of the range of elements we need to consider in our game. RSM is leading the way with player performance research and my personal results from the study have been fascinating. “I’m looking forward to working with my coaching team to make improvements in my own routine ahead of the 2018 season.” RSM is a leading audit, tax and consulting firm to the middle market with 3800 partners and staff operating from 35 locations throughout the United Kingdom. Dr Bridge has led the RSM player performance study. He has been working at the University of Birmingham since 2001 where he lectures in coaching and applied sport science in golf and other sports. His research interests lie in gaining a greater understanding of what leads to maximal golf performance. This includes developing better performance analysis methods for golf and the optimisation of physical preparation for golf.

ith 2017 now behind us and our team enjoying the holiday break, I’d like the opportunity to thank all of you in the golf sector for your contribution to the game last year. We are incredibly thankful for the efforts of so many people throughout the country and particularly those working at the grass roots in golf clubs who make our game happen on a daily basis. Last year was an exceptional one for our game and we believe the sport is in great heart. While there are many highlights to look back upon, we’ll fondly remember 2017 as the year when: • Mike Hendry became the first Kiwi to win the New Zealand Open Championship in 14 years; • The first ever LPGA event was held at the spectacular Windross Farm in south Auckland; • Frank Nobilo and Greg Turner were inducted to the New Zealand Golf hall of fame; • The Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship was hosted in New Zealand for the first time with the outstanding Royal Wellington Golf Club setting new standards for excellence; • Ryan Fox enjoyed a breakthrough year on the European Tour and Josh Geary qual-

From a New Zealand Golf perspective, we’ve had a great year and are very pleased with our progress on several fronts. Our strategy to lead, grow and support the game is in full flight and across all key measurement metrics we are making great progress. For us, the end of 2017 brings to a close a very busy three-year strategic period and it is timely for us to look back at what has been achieved:

NZPGA graduates are world class By Andrew Whiley A voice from the south
L
ast month I enjoyed attending the NZPGA trainee graduation day at Gulf Harbour Country Club in north Auckland. The purpose of this day was to celebrate the trainees completing their three years of education and graduating as full members of the New Zealand Professional Golfers’ Association. Having been a NZPGA board member since 2008, I have seen more than 80 trainees graduate as full members of the PGA. Each year the quality of the trainee golf professionals graduating is even more impressive. Having a day to recognise and celebrate with their families, all of the hard work that these trainees have put in, is important. Gulf Harbour was in
great condition and a majestic setting for this day and the evening meal and presentations highlighted why this is a great location for golf and events. This year nine new members were recognised at the PGA trainee awards and graduation: AA class members were Nick Loach (Nelson Golf Club), Larissa Blackbourn (Bay of Plenty), Sam Lee (Wainui Golf Club) and Conal Cooke (Remuera Golf Club). A class members were Jason Mann (Auckland), Ray Martin (Pakuranga Golf Club), Daniel Ruttley (Howick Golf Club), Glenn Robinson (Paraparaumu Golf Club) and Dongwoo Kang (Gulf Harbour Golf Club). PGA professionals complete a threeyear modern apprenticeship to be qualified in coaching, management, small business, club technology, repairs and events. Trainees graduate through the NZQA New Zealand Apprenticeship
scheme and were presented with NZQA qualifications: Level 3 certificate in sports coaching, level 3 certificate in retail and sales, level 4 certificate in adult learning, level 4 certificate in sport and recreation and level 5 diploma in golf business. The workload to pass the studies whilst maintaining their golfing ability playing in trainee matches and tournaments, on top of working 40-hour plus work weeks, really makes for a very busy three years. After personally having interviewed these future golf professionals at the aptitude assessment day three years ago, it is always a privilege to see how these individuals grow and become more professional over time. As New Zealand is part of the PGA world alliance, this allows NZPGA graduates to be internationally recognised. The education programme is taught to the standards that are globally recognised. What
is pleasing to the NZPGA is that we have instructors and educators here in New Zealand that are truly world class and experts in the industry, who are available to impart their knowledge to these future golf professionals. Today, graduates of the NZPGA programme are known to be well educated and have the skills recognised as assets in golf roles around the world. Currently, there are New Zealand golf professionals working throughout Australia, Asia, South Pacific, North America, the UK, Scandinavia and Europe. So when you are next in a golf shop talking to the trainee or young NZPGA professional behind the counter, or getting a few tips from them, remember that these individuals aren’t just knowledgeable and good at what they do — they are truly world class.

Over the years I’ve been writing these columns, a number of common themes have inevitably reoccurred. Pace of play (the number one concern of club golfers in the USA, and no doubt here as well), trying different variations of the game – especially in winter - getting the best out of technology and professional advice, and ideas for growing the game have all been covered more than once. But as noted on several occasions, visible change and progress is hard to detect, whether you are talking about the average golfer’s handicap, or the financial challenges faced by many golf clubs. There are a couple of bright spots – which I will come to later – but the main conclusion is that most golfers either don’t want change or else take some perverse satisfaction from their weekly self-flagellation, and in continually criticising the way their club is run. As Peter Alliss said many years ago, if golfers approached their day jobs the way they treat their golf, they would soon be fired or out of business. For example, you wouldn’t employ a talented and experienced accountant, and then try and learn the finer points of accounting, product pricing and tax returns from YouTube. You wouldn’t buy a new computer system or leading edge piece of equipment without taking professional
Golfers can be a perverse lot advice. Nor would you appoint a board of directors and then expect them to solve all the problems of the business whilst you regularly took pot shots at their performance. Yet that’s exactly what happens at many clubs. Thankfully, there are some signs of progress and in most cases the involvement of a PGA professional and his or her team is part of this. There is a growing number of PGA-qualified people moving into roles in golf club management, golf operations and multipurpose roles in smaller clubs, and making a difference through their expertise. There’s nothing new about this: the original professionals came out from Scotland to build a new life here, and literally had to create a game that would sustain a reasonable livelihood by designing and constructing golf courses, making clubs and travelling around New Zealand to teach the game. They were the undisputed experts in the game and business of golf, and the same applies in 2018. Clubs should be making use of this resource, and the corollary is that PGA professionals need to be proactive in using their skills to help individual golfers play better golf, because the more they play, the more the club will ultimately benefit. Profession-
als also have much to contribute in areas such as course design and setup, the competition programme and in game development initiatives. For this to happen, we need a circuit breaker and the new rules of golf could be a key. I’m really encouraged by the thought that has gone into simplifying the rules and the focus on speeding up the game through ready golf, not requiring pins to be attended (a huge time waster on courses with large greens), reducing the searching time for lost balls and so on. The PGA professional can be the heart of this, as the first point of contact with club members and visitors alike, and being in the best place to monitor and take advantage of the changes. My only criticism of the new rules is that we have to wait until 2019 before they come into force. The second thing that needs to happen is that golf club members must start playing their part in really supporting their club. The point was well made at my club’s recent AGM: success won’t be achieved by expecting the board, head professional or general manager to drive the growth needed for a sustainable future. Members should be doing their bit by patronising the club and its facilities, and importantly by bringing visitors and encour-
TWILIGHT GOLF
aging them to do the same. There is a huge population of “lapsed” golfers out there, who with a bit of a push could become regular customers of your club. Some may become members eventually, but that should not be the main aim initially. Small improvements can make a huge impact: a dozen extra green fees a week across the year could mean $30,000 to $50,000 extra revenue for a club. We all know people with golf clubs sitting in their garage, so if we each invite three or four a year, the target will be easily achieved. Similarly with pace of play: picking up a couple of minutes a hole through ready golf means you finish 30 minutes earlier, often the difference between someone staying for a drink and bite to eat, or not. The club as a whole – including you – will benefit. This column will be my last contribution, at least for a while. I have now fully retired from the New Zealand Professional Golfers’ Association, and so it’s time for someone else to take up the cudgels, and for me to spend more time practicing what I have been preaching for the last nine years. All the best for your golf in 2018, and the years to follow.

Compliments of the season By Anthony Barkley NZPGA Professional
I
hope your holidays have gone well and you have managed to get in lots of golf. Certainly, if the weather has continued the way it is currently the courses will be very dry and you will be enjoying lots of run. I will cover a few different elements in this article and will start with something I heard from a customer who visited a golf store in Hamilton. I have learnt over the years to not have a strong opinion of things unless I actually know enough about it. Golf equipment is the same. If I don’t stock an item or brand than how can I comment on how good or bad it is. Have I had the opportunity to test the
item to see how it compares to others? So this customer went in and asked about Taylormade in this store that didn’t stock the item. The comment back was that the technology does not work and their brands were better. This is a strong comment considering how many of the top 10 in the world play the gear plus the success I have had with the gear when testing against others. I’m sorry but the salesperson must have been desperate for a sale that day and I see bagging other products is not a great sales technique. So buyers beware, if a salesperson puts down another product that they cannot offer you to test, then test what they have for sure, but keep notes and shop around just in case what they say is wrong. If you are thinking of getting into your
golf more and starting to hit the range more, consider reading a book calledPractice to Learn. Play to Win By Mark Guadagnoli. If you can get your hands on one, it talks about adding consequences to your practice to help gel the range work to the course. We all know that often we can practice well but when on the course it doesn’t always go to plan. This is because of the internal pressure or that each shot has a consequence where on the range each shot means less. Its very good and I wish I had read something like this when I was an up and coming player. My last element is coaching in general. With the rise of online and TV coaching tips I think its important to be consistent on your approach. This means if you are getting coaching, stick with advice from your professional. Why I say this is that
we as coaches make calls in regards to your swing from what we see in front of us. We can video, for more details as well making our assessment of what you need much clearer and precise than a piece of advise you hear on a YouTube article. I have a few on there but they are general tips but you should get to your local PGA professional. As a golf coach what I have learnt over the years is that one drill won’t work for all and focusing on the one type of swing concept may work, but without help it likely won’t. Don’t get fooled with fancy marketing and big promises. So enjoy the sun while it lasts and get out on the course more. While you are doing it bring along a friend as we sure do need more players in this game.

Phil Tataurangi shares his thoughts on Golden Oldies World Golf Festival four course challenge GOLF EVENT
E
isenhower team and individual winner, 2002 PGA winner, international golf commentator and proud Kiwi, Phil Tataurangi shared some special insights in a video on the courses to host the Golden Oldies World Golf Festival four course challenge in April 2018. Phil has played the four very different courses a number of times over the years and recounted his personal thoughts on his favourite holes on each course along with a tip or two on how to play them. Terrace Downs is in a truly wonderful setting, according to Phil. High up in the Rakaia Gorge at the foothills of the Southern Alps’ splendid Mt Hutt, the stunning location of this Scottish highlands style course can be a real distraction. Thirty minutes north of Christchurch is the Pegasus Golf and Sports Club, one of the newer courses in Canterbury. Phil noted that, like Terrace Downs, nature
is one of the features of the Christine Kerr-designed course, warning golfers to be wary of the nor’easter wind which can prove challenging. Harewood Golf Course is one for golfers who like to hit straight. Phil described Harewood as a parklands style course, renovated by Greg Turner and Scott McPherson about five years ago and boasting 18 brand new tees. History and heritage are the real features of the Christchurch Golf Club, the second oldest in New Zealand dating back to 1873. The club has hosted NZ Open Championships, Amateur Championships and the 1992 Eisenhower Cup at which the New Zealand team, including Phil, finished second. To gain some insights into Phil’s favourite holes at each course check out the video on the home page of www.christchurchgoldenoldies.com.

Challenge yourself on the West Coast GOLF EVENT
The West Coast has a long golfing history and is proud to offer The West Coast Golf Challenge, a great experience for both local golfers and friends from ‘away’ – which is every
part of the world that is not on ‘The Coast’. March 6th-March 9th 2018, will be the 6th edition of the West Coast Golf Challenge.
A new feature of this year’s event is a new Pro Grade. It is a great opportunity to combine four rounds of golf on four quite different courses with the chance to experience some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. The four hosting clubs are Westport on their Kawatiri links at Carters’ Beach, Reefton on their Glenburnie course, Hokitika on their links course at Mahinapua, and Greymouth on their course at Kaiata. All of the courses will offer different challenges, from the links courses of Hokitika and Westport to the parklands layouts of Reefton and Greymouth, and all will be well prepared and presented. Good hospitality is guaranteed. This is the West Coast after all! Visitors are encouraged to take time either before, during or after the tournament to visit picturesque landmarks such as Denniston, Cape Foulwind, Charleston, Punakaiki, Oceana Gold mine, Lake Brunner, Brunner Mine, Shantytown, Lake Kaniere, Hokitika Gorge or The Glaciers and all of the beauty that lies between and beyond. The chance should also be taken to be impressed by and get your own examples of the wonderful art and crafts
that the West Coast prides itself on. A good variety of accommodationand restaurants are available in all of the towns and visitors can choose to relocate for the next day’s play, which the schedule readily allows for, or make any of the towns their base for the duration of the tournament. The courses will be played in the following order, Westport, Reefton, Hokitika and finally Greymouth. Tournament organisers are confident that visitors and locals alike will be impressed with the $14000-plus value prize list. The tournament will be a stableford in three divisions, one for women and two for the men. With fields over 100 in the last two years we expect the limit of 120 players to be reached fairly quickly so enter early to avoid disappointment. To express interest and receive an information pack, or visit the tournament website at http:// westcoastgolfchallenge.com for more informationand an entry form. he Greymouth Golf Club is located on Golf Links Road approximately 6km east of Greymouth town centre. The course is acknowledged as having the best manicured fairways of the 18 hole courses on the West Coast, and while not long at about 5600 metres it provides an interesting test of golf. Most of the Club’s major tournaments are played in the period from January to March, starting with the New Year’s Day tournament, followed by the Westland Classic in mid February, and as one leg of the West Coast four course challenge in early March. Hole No 8 is the club’s signature hole. While not long, the 329 metre par 4 dog-leg left has an out-of -bounds on the left. There are also two strategically positioned mature kahikatea to manoeuvre past in the fairway. Sir Bob Charles has described this hole as one of his top 18 holes of golf in New Zealand. Greymouth’s Kaiata links course really is a gem in the crown of local sporting facilities in Greymouth. Green fees are a competitive $25 per round.

NEWS FROM AROUND THE REGIONS
NORTHLAND WOMENS TORO INTERPROVINCIAL
The Northland Women had a stunning week at Sherwood Park starting their campaign with an upset win (3-2) against a strong Wellington Side with wins to Jacoby, Bulkeley and Cox while May and Taylor both went down on the final green, a perfect start none the less. Onto round two and the challenge wasn’t any less coming up against a strong Man Wang team who had toppled North Harbour in the morning, another 3 – 2 win sent the ladies into the spotlight on day one with wins to Kacoby and Cox while May and Bulkeley both had halved matches. Round three saw the women take Taranaki apart 4 – 1 with wins to Jacoby, May and Cox while Bulkeley and Taylor both halved their matches. A tough match in
round four against defending champs Auckland was never going to be an easy one, unfortunately the Aucklanders were too sharp taking the match 5 – 0. With no time to dwell on the Auckland match, the girls were back at it in Round five picking up a crucial 3.5 to 1.5 victory over Aorangi keeping their finals hopes alive, wins to the top three and a half to Cox. Round six saw Northland take a well earned rest before getting back at it in effectively a quarter final against North Harbour, while we fought hard we could only muster 1.5 points with May picking up a win and Jacoby halving her match, a great week pipped in the final round to just miss out on a semi finals berth. None the less, they dusted themselves off and beat Waikato in the fifth and sixth play off match to finish the tournament in fifth place – what a fantastic effort by the
team. A huge thanks goes to Sherrill Glen for managing the team throughout the week and Kylie Jacoby for her continued commitment towards womens golf in Northland – the girls are now looking to go one better next year in Christchurch!
MENS TORO INTERPROVINCIAL
The week started well for the men taking a strong win (4-1) first up against Tasman, round two saw Northland taking on Waikato and a slow start from the boys in blue gave Waikato the sniff they wanted early, unfortunately some loose shots and crucial moments saw us eventually go down 4 -1 to the multiple time champions. No time to dwell on the loss, the men looked to round three where they had a massive match against defending

champions Wellington, a great match which went right to the final green where Luke Brown defeated the current NZ Amateur champion Daniel Hillier giving Northland a 3 – 2 victory (wins to Brown, Wightman and Neho). With all to play for, the Northland lads were looking for a big victory against Man Wang and they did not disappoint, a clinical afternoon of golf (where combined the team was close to 30 under par) saw us take the win 4 – 1 with wins to Brown, Wightman, Neely and Neho while Nitsche went down on the final green. A huge match against Auckland was next up with both teams looking to keep their finals hopes alive, hope was high in the Northland camp after beating Auckland only three weeks

prior at the Garrard Shield and a fairytale finish was on the cards. Auckland took the early dominance with both Neely and Neho going down in tight battles giving the Aucklanders a two nil lead putting all Northland supporters on edge, this wasn’t eased when Nitsche (1 up on 18) carved one into the bush after his opponent had done the same, a scrambling effort from the trees was enough to halve the hole and win his match, Wightman (AS on last) then sent the clubhouse into raptures as he holed a 50 foot birdie putt down the hill to win his match one up – unfortunately that was all the magic we had in stall that day as Brown had to take an unplayable and found some tree trouble ruling him out of the contest. Hopes were still high, needing a big win against Aorangi to finish the week and some favorable results to open up a semi final berth but it wasn’t to be as we halved our match with Aorangi leaving us with no hope but a credible 7th place finish. Scott Wightman was the stand out player for the week on his home track not losing a game to pick up five points throughout the week, Neho was also a valuable member picking up four points in his return to representative golf. A big thanks to Shaun O’shea who managed the team for the week and all supporters and caddies, onto Clearwater for another crack next year.
WAITANGI GOLF CLUB PRO–AM
Preparation is underway for the 2018 Pro-Am, which will be held on Thu/Fri 22nd /23rd March. Most of our sponsors from previous years have signed up again, recognising the opportunity to showcase their business whilst giving their customers an enjoyable day out. We are anticipating 32 teams will take part, which means 32 of New Zealand’s finest young Pro golfers will be coming to Waitangi to try to tame the course. Several of the Pros are return visitors, determined to put their mark on part of what has been deemed “ The Northern Swing”
– a fortnight of Pro Am tournaments held at five different Northland courses. This year we are being assisted by Riki Kinnaird, from Duke of Marlborough Hotel, Russell, in our marketing and fund raising endeavours. Riki is arranging a Gala dinner on 21st March at the Duke, where the guest speaker will be Steve Williams of caddying fame. There is a raffle being held in conjunction with the dinner, with prizes in excess of $10,000. The 1st prize being a Luxury Weekend for 6 people at Eagles Nest in Russell. Our own auction and raffle, held at the Welcome function will donate all funds raised to his foundation. The preliminary programme for the Pro – Am follows the formula used in previous years, which has proved both popular and successful. Thurs Mar 22nd: Shootout – Pros play the first nine holes to qualify for a skins type back nine, with players dropping off after each hole. In the event of a tie, the players will play No 9 until a winner is declared. Welcome Function – A meal and an opportunity for the team members to get to their pro after the selection process. Friday March 23rd: 18 holes of golf by the teams consisting of one pro and three amateurs. Prize giving at the end of the day, expected to be approx. 4.00pm. Tickets for the raffle or the Gala dinner are available from Waitangi Golf Club email waitangigolf@xtra.co.nz for details.

An amazing achievement for a team with made up of players with an average age of just under 18 years! “It’s pretty awesome, the boys have done a fantastic job and haven’t lost a game all week. I couldn’t be more happy for them,” says Hutson, who also took out the Player of the Tournament trophy. After 11 years as the helm, Andrew Leventis has left Harbour Golf to pursue a new career. Andrew achieved so much for the Association, including the negotiation of a major sponsorship contract, the first in Harbour’s history, and was been responsible for lifting the profile of some of our tournaments into events that are regularly frequented by some of the top amateurs in the country. A lot goes on behind the scenes, organising the many events and representative teams at all levels, and Andrew provided very professional service to the Harbour Golf board and all its members for over a decade. He leaves big shoes to fill and we wish Andrew and his family all the very best for the future.

Josh Leitch (Maungakiekie) won the Men’s Champion of Champions at the Windross Farm Golf Course last month. His victory was set up in the first round when he posted a superb 68 to be leading by one shot over Akarana’s Timmy Tu and Remuera’s Connor Barker. Leitch followed up with the equal best afternoon round of even par 71. The Intermediate section was won by Onewhero’s J.Ruddell on 81 stableford points over Royal Auckland’s Paul Hain on 77 points. Both players parred the first two holes and then they both birdied the 21st hole. But it was Dryland’s superb approach to the 22nd hole that set up the win. AUCKLAND NOTICEBOARD

AUCKLAND WOMENS PROVINCIAL MATCHPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP
Titirangi club mates Britney Dryland and Miree Jung fought out the final of the Auckland Womens Provincial Matchplay Championship last month at Windross Farm Golf Course. And it was literally a fight as the match was not decided until the 22nd hole with Dryland making birdie to secure the title. Dryland was ahead early in the match but Jung eventually claimed the holes back and then went ahead with one hole to play. Jung found the fairway bunker on

2017 SEEKA WHANGAMATA MENS MASTERS
This year’s tournament held recently at the Titoki course drew a field of 128 players from 39 clubs playing 54 holes over 3 days. A golfing weekend away at a very popular beach location makes this event an extremely popular annual getaway, with the full field sign going up within a few days of entries opening. The weather over the weekend was great for golf, fine with a bit of wind. The field was divided into 2 sections based on age which this year saw the age split at 57. Mike Leeper (Pupuke) held the honours at the end of the first day with a 71, 2 shots better than Dave Singer (Waitakere) and a group of 3 who were one shot further back. At the end of the second day, the field had closed up with three players equal on 146, Mike Leeper, Philip Hunter (Morrinsville) and Bryan Grafas (Whangamata), with Dave Cooke (Tau-
ranga) one shot back. Sunday came with a continuation of the fine weather and close scoring golf. Gareth Chitty (Titirangi) shot the best round of the day but was unable to catch up with two of the leaders who finished equal first on 217, Mike Leeper and Philip Hunter. An extremely exciting play off that went to sudden death after the first two holes ultimately saw Mike Leeper come through, winning on the fifth play off hole and taking the tournament honours for the second year in a row. Another highlight of the tournament was a hole in one on the 154m No. 17 hole by Jim Denyer from Redwood Park. A well-attended prize giving ceremony followed on late Sunday afternoon. Sponsors and local businesses combined with the Whangamata Golf Club to build a prize list worth in excess of $14,000.

TARANAKI TORO INTERPROVINCIALS
Last month’s Men’s and Women’s Toro Interprovincials in Northland saw both Taranaki teams off the pace. The Wom-
en’s team competed at Sherwood Park Golf Club – Whangarei where despite opening the tournament with a 3-2 victory over Aorangi, found the going tough for the rest of the sectional play and had to wait until the final day to record their only other victory, beating Tasman 4-1 in the 11th and 12th play-off game. During the sectional play the team found themselves up against the eventual back to back champions Auckland and beaten semi-finalists North Harbour losing both games 5-0. They were also well beaten by hosts Northland 4-1 and suffered a narrow defeat to Manawatu-Wanganui 3-2. All 6 of the team were able to record one individual win, with Rochelle Keegan achieving the best record of the week with 3 wins a half from her 7 games and Celeste Mclean recording 3 wins. The Men’s event which started a day later at Mangawhai Golf Club saw the Taranaki team finish in 10th place overall. Defeats on day 1 to Southland 4½-½ and Canterbury 3½-1½ meant they were always going to struggle to finish higher up the ladder. A 3-2 victory on day 2 against Otago and other results going their way gave the team some hope, but a 4-1 defeat against North Harbour who would go onto win the title, ended the team’s hopes of a semi-final berth. A half against Hawkes bay 2½-2½ and a 3-2 win over Poverty Bay East Coast saw the team climb to 10th position overall. Fletcher Broderick recorded the best individual record for the week with 4 wins and a half from his 6 matches. Scores last month at golf clubs around the district have provided ample evidence that summer golf is well and truly here. 47 points plus from 1 or 2 golfers have not been uncommon with a great deal more scoring over the 40 point range. There has even been one or two over 50. However it is hard to imagine many getting past Waitara Golfer Lewis Faulkner’s 54 points he racked up at New Plymouth’s Christmas Hamper pre Christmas. Playing on a 34 handicap Lewis had a 87 to finish 5 points ahead of Inglewood’s
Chris Watson, who must have felt confident that 49 points would be more than enough to take out the Junior Division. TARANAKI NOTICEBOARD 5-Jan

HAWKES BAY/POVERTY BAY NAPIER NAIL DOWN GREENWOOD CUP FOR 2017
Greenwood Cup Winners 2017: Napier Golf Club Played in November Napier GC remained unbeaten to claim the prestigious Greenwood Cup, Napier played Maraenui and in a close encounter came out on top 6-4, so the first critical match had been decided. Hastings had two wins so crunch time for all 3 contenders. Maraenui beat OngaOnga all eyes were on the Napier – Hastings match. It was as tight as you can get and in one of the last pairings home T. Whitehouse who was one down, pitched in beautifully on 18 to birdie the hole, taking that match to be all square and giving Napier an overall result of 5.5 to 4.5. Napier was looking good at this stage and it would have needed a loss to OngaOnga in the afternoon and win by Maraenui for them to be toppled. In another session of tense golf Maraenui and Hastings halved and Napier were taken to the wire by a game OngaOnga but
eventually Napier came out on top 6-4. A fantastic performance from Napier who have some up and coming young stars in their team, along of course with a few experienced gentlemen as well. A great combination as Napier were unbeaten after 7 matches, so obviously end up on 14 points. Maraenui were amazingly close, if they had got up over Hastings and Napier had lost, they may have scraped in by a single game point, but eventually finished on 11 points. Hawkes Bay were 3rd on 10 points and certainly had their moments, obviously winning 5 matches and taking Hasting’s scalp. Hastings finished 4th on 9 points and needless to say will be somewhat disappointed with that. While the Country Clubs compete in the Greenwood, they also play for the Radonich trophy, the best of the Country clubs, and the winner of this was Dannevirke; 2017 being the 1st time they have achieved this. Congratulations to Dannevirke (6 points) who beat all the other country Clubs in matches to win this trophy. OngaOnga were second with 4 points, Waipukarau 2 points and Takapau didn’t have a great Greenwood/Radonich, unable to score a point. There were a number of unbeaten players throughout the course of the two weekends play and while they didn’t win them all, the following were unbeaten, so congratulations go to: Perry Simpson 3 wins and 4 halves Dave Wilkinson 5 wins and 2 halves Carlos Tawera 6 wins and 1 half The Bretherton Buist Cup which is for the best performing player and while those unbeaten are contenders, those with 7 wins from 7 games hold preference as the winner. Those that had the perfect result included: Russell Mitchell Gabriel Whincop Christian Walker Zack Swannick Mako Thompson The eventual winner was Mako Thomp-

MANAWATU WANGANUI OOM TO KICK OFF EARLY
The Manawatu Wanganui Order of Merit will start this year with the Joe Kells Memorial & PN Classic on Sunday 28th January. The Joe Kells Memorial is a long standing open club event at the Palmerston North Golf Club, which was re-introduced in 2017 in a July date. The event will now return to its traditional end of January time slot, in the hope that clubs will want to use it as a pennant trial. The Masters women have the event as a trial. The event will remain on the Manawatu Wanganui Golf OOM to kick off the rep trial season nice and early. Despite it being along time away from most rep matches, Manawatu Wanganui Golf believe it is in the best interests of players to spread OOM events right throughout the year, including in “better weather months”, so as not to over commit rep players all at once at the end of the season. We want to make it attractive for potential rep players to put up their hand for selection. NZ Golf have also confirmed that it will be included in the NZ Golf OOM, which attracts national and international amateur ranking points. The 2017 Joe Kells winner was Junior Tatana, and the PN Classic event was won by Brydie Hodge.

That result showed what the Manawatu Wanganui team was capable of when enough players perform well at the same time. Unfortunately a narrow loss to Northland halted some of the early momentum. This was followed by two more team losses. Auckland was always going to be tough match, however the team would have been hoping for a better result against Wellington. Wins against Aorangi and Taranaki was a great way to finish pool play. To go through pool play with a 50% win/loss record was still a pretty good effort. Unfortunately the team lost their final playoff match against Hawkes Bay/Poverty Bay to eventually finish in 10th place, which perhaps did not accurately represent how they had played throughout the week. The best individuals from the Manawatu Wanganui team was Mudra Lakhani with 4 wins, Tara Raj with 3 and a half wins. Brydie Hodge at number 1 had 3 wins. Auckland won the event with an extremely dominant week. They did not even really get close to losing any matches throughout. The Manawatu Wanganui men however had a very disappointing week eventually finishing in 15th place from the 15 teams. They did have some very close matches, however it seemed that the team just struggled a little to finish the matches under pressure. We do not believe they were the worst side at the event, but unfortunately had a horror draw striking none of the weaker sides on their side of the draw. The biggest positive was some very good individual performances and a draw against defending champions Wellington. Two players stood out throughout the week, Guy Perry playing at two, had 5 wins from 6, and Liam Finlayson, playing at three, had 3 wins and 2 halves. For both those players to lose just one match each was a great performance.
Pictured is Junior Tatana – 2017 Joe Kells winner.
INTERPROVINCIAL RESULT
The Manawatu Wanganui teams finished off the pace in the Toro Interprovincials held last month in Northland. The women’s team had some great moments and could have easily finished higher up if matches had gone their way. They beat North Harbour in round 1, whom ended up making the semi finals.

MEN’S CRIGHTON ITM CLASSIC
It took a sudden death play-off to decide the Gross winner of this event. Played at Levin Golf club a clutch 10-foot uphill putt saw Adrian Burns beat Shaun Milled into second place. Great to have this sort of finish as the clubhouse empties out and becomes the gallery for such a tight finish. Good to watch.
Xmas Cheer was a wonderful day on a course that is in such great condition after a terrible wet winter. Bob Eadie won division two, Diane Dunlop the Women’s and David Giddens division one.

INTERCLUB REPORT
2017 was a great year for Kapiti Golf Club’s Ladies Interclub teams. Their 9 Hole Ladies won their competition at a canter - after going 8-1-0 they could afford to lose their last 2 games. The Mary Alward 18 Hole team also had a great season. They also won their division, and their semi-final 7.5-4.5 v Titahi Bay at Otaki. They then played the final v Otaki at Paraparaumu Beach but lost 5-7, with 2 matches being lost on the last hole. The Kapiti Pennants team (18 Hole) finished second just 2 points behind leaders Miramar. The Kapiti Men’s teams have had a tough year, with the exception of our top Division 4 team. After a slow start, they suddenly clicked and a win-ning run sent them to 2nd place in a very tough division.
STAN’S SUNDAY CLUB SHOOTOUT
Kapiti Golf Club’s 2017 Shootout has been won by Gus Mooney. A full field of 50 golfers lined up on Saturday 11 November, and after 9 holes we had whittled down to a final section of Gus Mooney, Sue Green, Peter Curran, Oki Latief and Tui Masi. It was left to Tui and Gus to contest the final (9th) hole, and Gus finished with a great chip and putt to win the trophy. It was a well contested event, my group had a 5 way putt-off, and another group reported a 7 way putt off. The Repechage final finished with Graeme Fraser beating Allen Earnshaw.

ENTRIES OPEN FOR ALLAN SCOTT MARLBOROUGH WOMEN’S GOLF TOURNAMENT: MARCH 2018
Entries for the 19th Allan Scott Marlborough Women’s Golf Tournament are now open on-line for 12, 13, 14, March 2018. Marlborough Golf Club has a new website developed by dotgolf. We’re proud to be one of the first of their sites to have on line entries for any NZ affiliated golfer. This means entries can be completed with a couple of clicks for each day you wish to play. If you do experience difficulties in entering then please e-mail jensen.pru@gmail.com and include name, club and membership ID, days you wish to play, if you require a trundler and if you wish to have a casual before you leave on Wednesday. The Committee have been brainstorming to come up with new ideas and ways of making this tournament fun, functional and friendly for all the ladies who flock in from around the country. The main route between Blenheim and Kaikoura is open, reducing the travel time considerably. It also creates an opportunity for you to enjoy the new scenery along the coast line and appreciate the long hours of work that the hundreds of extra staff have put in to repair the road following the earthquake in November

CANTERBURY PLAYERS EXCEL AT FALDO SERIES
Hiroki Miya (Russley Golf Club) has successfully defended his Faldo Series New Zealand Championship title and will once again be travelling to the Nick Faldo designed Laguna Lang Co golf course in Danang, Vietnam in early March 2018 to contest the Faldo Series Asia Championship title. The 17-year-old was the stand out player of the tournament posting the tournament low rounds of 68 in both his opening and closing rounds of the 54 hole event, which combined with his second round of 71 left him 9 under par with a final total of 207. Miya was 7 shots clear of second placed Amelia Garvey (Kaiapoi Golf Club) who finished on 214 to reclaim her title as the Faldo Series New Zealand Girls Champion in what has been an outstanding year for her golf. Miya and Garvey were the only players
31
to finish the 54 hole event under par as the three rounds were contested over the full range of weather conditions, which is a strong indication of their collective shot making ability. Like Miya, Garvey will hope to return to Vietnam and claim a Faldo Series Asia regional title, having lost out to a countback in the finals held in March 2017. The reward for success in the Asian regional finals includes a trip to Europe to compete in further Faldo events for the age grade winners. Both Miya and Garvey will be able to provide insight and support to the other winner on the day, Kazuma Kobori (Rangiora Golf Club) who came from started the day with a one shot deficit to the 36 hole leader, Oliver Merritt. Kobori posted a solid final round of 73 whilst Merritt slipped in form to record an 82, leaving Kobori to win his age grade by 2 shots from Hayato Miya (Hiroki’s younger brother). Kobori is another Canterbury player enjoying a strong year with a win in Australia in September to claim the 2017 Victorian Boys Championship. Andrew Bell, General Manager of Clearwater Golf Club, was quick to praise the success of the Canterbury trio in a field of golfers drawn from throughout New Zealand. “This year’s contest brought together our lowest ever handicap range of young players, and involved players from more clubs from throughout New Zealand than previous years. I am very pleased for Rachel Thow at Canterbury Golf who works so hard to get our young golfers out on course and into the game, as well as working on the high performance development as needed.” Bell also thanked the events principal sponsors Todd and Marion Heller who, along with two other Clearwater members were supporters of the first event 4 years ago, and have again provided support to ensure the winners can travel to Vietnam. “We are very grateful to Todd and Marion for their support, along with that of New Zealand Golf Inc. This investment in Canterbury junior golf and this event is something that Todd and Marion do out of pure generosity.” Today, 40 Faldo Series tournaments take place in 30-plus countries worldwide, touching more than 7,000 golfers each year. Past champions include Tseng Ya-ni and Rory McIlroy, both multiple Major winners.

CANTERBURY AGE GROUP CHAMPIONSHIPS A SUCCESS
The Canterbury Age Group Championships and Teams event was held over 36 holes at Clearwater Golf Club played in conjunction with the Faldo Series event played ast month The field of 60 players enjoyed the opportunity to play the championship course which was in superb condition for the event. This is one of the largest fields in recent years with the event being supported by Aorangi Golf who provided the opportunity for seven junior players to travel up to gain experience from the event and well as several entries from North Island players who were also competing in the Faldo Series event. It was impressive to see seven players under the age of 12 who competed in the event sustaining the full 36 holes with excellent scoring. Eight year old Ethan Lam (Everglades) played exceptional golf to win the Golf Foundation Cup for the best net score for girls and boys under 13 with net rounds of 67 and 64. What is equally as remarkable is that this was won on a countback from 12 year old Weedons member Joseph Hall, great scoring from two talented up and coming juniors. Hiroki Miya set the pace in the morning’s round with a four under 68 from the blue tees with Dominic Brettkelly only one shot back. Miya played steady golf in the afternoon to record a second sub par round of 71 to win the title from Brettkelly by six shots. In the Under 16 section it was younger brother Hayato Miya who stole the show, after starting with a round of 81, Miya found his form in the afternoon to equal his older brother’s score to also post a round of 71 which was good enough to win the title from Tiaki Ogilvie on 155 and Mitchell Berry on 156. Not to be out done by his older brothers Yuki Miya had a good day with rounds of 80 and 82 from the white tees to win by the Under 13 section from Hayden Lam by six shots. Kaiapoi’s Amelia Garvey won the Under 19 section in a closely fought contest with
Juliana Hung who finished just one shot back. The Salver for the best Girls net was won by Jasmine Clancy with net scores of 66 and 68. The Canterbury Teams Championship is also played in conjunction with the event with 12 teams representing eight different clubs with the best three scores counting from the four person team. The Russley team which included Hiroki Miya, Ben Baker, Dominic Brettkelly and Hayato Miya successfully defended the U19 Gross Team title. The young Everglades team of Hugo Reid, Kyle Manson, Hayden Lam and Ethan Lam had an excellent score to win the Canterbury U19 Net Teams title by six shots from the Weedons Team of Nathan Hall, Joseph Hall, Deanna Matthews and Jack Ryder. The teams event takes into account the difference of course ratings between the different tees used for boys and girls. Our thanks go to the Clearwater Golf Club for hosting the event and assisting in making it a very successful day.
CANTERBURY GOLF WOMEN’S CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT
82 players competed in the CGI 18 Hole Women’s Christmas Tournament at Waitikiri Golf Club on Friday 8 December. Including players from Ashburton and North Canterbury. With the temperature at 30 degrees, Waitikiri’s green fairways and trees offered some relief and players coped well in the conditions. Rachel Eder (pictured left) from Clearwater revelled in the conditions to return a sizzling one over par 75 to win Grade 1 and receive the Heather Harvey Salver. Grade 2 Gross and the CDLGA Salver was won by Sharon Brazier (pictured right) of Waitikiri with a 94. The prize winners were treated to a prize table of hams and other Christmas goodies.

Revolutionary Groove-In-Groove Technology headlines new Mack Daddy 4 wedges CALLAWAY UNVEILS NEW STANDARD IN SPECIALIST WEDGE PERFORMANCE
C
allaway, the #1 hardware company in the United States, launched late last year Mack Daddy 4 wedge line featuring an all-new proprietary Groove-In-Groove Technology that sets a new standard in shot-stopping spin and performance. The Mack Daddy 4 line is the most rigorously tested and Tour-validated wedge family Callaway has ever produced, and represents the finest collaboration to date between wedge design legend, Roger Cleveland, Callaway’s in-house R&D experts, and its global team of Staff Professionals. Roger commented: “MD4 sets a new and higher standard in performance and appearance. Shape, feel, spin, control, versatility, finish and detailing have all been elevated to the highest level we’ve ever achieved.” New Groove-In-Groove Technology combines a unique suite of features that provide incredible levels of spin and control: • The main grooves are horizontally milled and saw-cut to precise tolerances. In the lower lofts (52° and below) a 20D groove has been used for consistent spin on fuller shots, while higher lofted wedges (54° and above) feature an aggressive 5D groove configuration for maximum control out of the rough and around the green. • Each wedge features a 16-groove configuration which also includes a new extra ‘Nip-It’ groove near the leading edge for added control, especially on shorter shots. • In-between each main groove on the flat part of the face is a milled ‘Micro-Positive’ surface texture that features three raised micro-ridges, extending the length of the hitting area. Micro-grooves between the ridges then help grab the ball’s cover to increase spin significantly on a variety of shots. • This combination of grooves, plus
micro-grooves, provides 84 different contact points to grab the cover of the golf ball. Roger Cleveland’s tireless work on Tour refining shapes, soles, grinds and camber has led to a more compact shape, straighter leading edge, tighter leading-edge radius and slightly more offset, compared to MD3 wedges. The tight radius makes it easy to make clean contact on tight lies for maximum spin and control. The uniquely satisfying feel of MD4 Wedges comes courtesy of a soft 8620 carbon steel head (available in an elegant Platinum Chrome or non-glare Matte Black finish) and a four-port aluminum medallion weighting system that allows for the precise positioning of the CG in each head. CG moves progressively upwards as loft increases, ensuring a solid shot
