Is rugby about to go through what golf endured a couple of years ago? I
By Paul Gueorgieff Editor, Golfer Pacific NZ
was interested by last month’s announcement that telecommunications company Spark had won the rights to broadcast next year’s Rugby World Cup. Spark was joined in its bid by television company TVNZ. It seems Spark had to have a television company on board because it appears that the organisers of the World Cup require that seven matches must be televised live on free to air television. This is what happened at the last World Cup which was held in England. In case you have forgotten, the All Blacks beat Australia 34-17 in the final. Subscriber television broadcaster Sky had the rights to that
World Cup but screened seven of the matches on free to air channel Prime. On that occasion Prime broadcast the opening match of the tournament, two of the four quarter-finals, the two semi-finals, the playoff for third and the final. It would seem Spark is under the same obligation for next year. The remainder of the games, most likely, will be shown over the internet by Spark. You could either subscribe to matches individually or purchase a more comprehensive package. What interests me is this is similar to what golf went through a couple of years ago when Sky lost the rights to broadcast the world’s richest golf circuit, the PGA Tour. Golf fans instead had to sub-
scribe to the broadcasters of the PGA Tour. This meant watching the PGA Tour on your laptop or linking your laptop to your television screen. I went through this process. I tried watching the golf on my laptop but I did not enjoy it. The pictures were exactly the same as would have been shown on television but for some reason it did not provide the same pleasure. Maybe it was the small screen of a laptop compared to the large screen of a television. Broadcasters of the golf encouraged us to link your laptop to your television. I went through this process as well. I went out and bought a piece of wire that plugged into the back of the television and into the side of the laptop. After several attempts I finally found the
appropriate buttons to press in order to make it all work. It did work. But I sill didn’t like it. Every time I wanted to watch golf I had find the wire-thing and remember which buttons to press. It was cumbersome in my book. At the time I remember comparing the whole operation to driving a car. I said that while a car was a highly complex piece of machinery it was simple to drive it. You simply inserted a key and turned it. When it comes to next year’s Rugby World Cup it is hard to imagine I will be switching on the laptop to watch any game. I laugh at the image of my wife and I gathered around the screen of a laptop watching a rugby match.

Gareth Paddison’s second Muriwai Open win after three playoff holes
areth Paddison won the Muriwai Open in Auckland for a second year in a row but it took three extra playoff holes before he prevailed for the second time. After a long week with no power, the Muriwai Beach Golf Club lit up the final afternoon with some spectacular golf, topped off with Paddison sinking a clutch birdie putt for an exciting and well-deserved finish for the local gallery. It wasn’t his first clutch moment after showing his experience to come back from two-shots behind after James Anstiss laid down a great challenge, highlighted by an amazing eagle on the 14th hole to jump into the lead with three holes remaining. Anstiss then added a birdie on the 16th hole to apply huge pressure on the eventual champion who handled it well. With three playoff holes and three impeccable wedge shots, Paddison couldn’t get the final putt to drop on the first two occasions, but it was third time lucky as he secured yet another title. “This one means a lot in defending my title,’’ said Paddison, from Manor Golf Park Sanctuary in Wellington. ``There is a lot at stake and a lot of pride on the line, so it was a great day and I couldn’t be happier. “James played exceptionally well and made that eagle on the par five and was unlucky to drop a shot on the last, so he was very impressive today. All the young guys were impressive this week and have a big future ahead.” Paddison, who turns 38 on May 13, has been a professional golfer for 18 years. Anstiss, from Queenstown, carded a memorable final round five-under par 67 and only had positive thoughts after falling just short of his first win on New Zealand’s Charles Tour. “I’m obviously a bit gutted not to win, but it was an awesome week and I’m pretty happy with how everything went,’’ Anstiss said. ``It’s nice to be up there, right in contention and to have that energy running through the body down the stretch. “I played really well all day, recovered well and took advantage of some great opportunities with the bonus of that eagle. It’s the great thing about this tour is that if you play well you are going to be up there and to have these feelings will prepare me well with what’s to come in the future.” Wellington amateur Daniel Hillier started the final day birdie and eagle to throw his name in the mix early, but couldn’t challenge the leaders enough from there. It still was enough to once again end the week as leading amateur. Oscar Cadenhead and Jang Hyun Lee were tied for lowest round of the week (66) which earns them a share of 52 dozen Asahi beers. However, with Lee being

just 15-years-old, he is unable to accept his part of the prize, which put a large smile on Cadenhead’s face. In the women’s division of the Muriwai Open it was Auckland professional Munchin Keh who won by a mammoth nine shots. It was her third win in the Muriwai Open and her fifth win on the Charles Tour. Keh was the only player who could handle the tough weather conditions throughout the week and it provided her with her first win as a professional. “It feels really good and I’m stoked with the outcome,’’ Keh said. ``I wasn’t too focused on the lead, I was just trying to focus on my game and play each shot which turned out pretty good. “It’s nice to get my first professional win out of the way, and even more special to do it here at home.” Keh was to return to China to continue her career but said the Charles Tour had been a great platform to build her game. “This tour is where I grew up playing golf and building the confidence and reaching national level which has helped me a lot, especially with overseas experience.“

Fruits have flourished for Kerry Mountcastle GOLF NEWS
I
n March it was victory in the New Zealand Amateur Strokeplay Championship at Paraparaumu, north of Wellington. Last month it was a win amongst the professionals in the Carrus Open at Tauranga. They were two major steps in the burgeoning career of Wairarapa golfer Kerry Mountcastle from a seed that was probably planted in the Asia-Pacif-
ic Amateur Championship in Wellington last October. In that event, full of rising stars in the Asia-Pacific region, Mountcastle finished a very creditable ninth. It convinced Mountcastle to give up his job as an electrician and concentrate on his golf. The fruits have since grown. In the Carrus Open it took until the last of 72 holes for Mountcastle to gain the outright lead but that’s where the

finish line is. Going into the final day’s play the clear favourite was Mark Brown who had amazingly won the tournament in the three previous years. Brown had scored an outstanding 11 under par score of 59 on the second day but he finished with a moderate score of even par 70 which allowed Mountcastle to pip him and two others at the finishing post. Mountcastle ended with a fourround total of 16 under par at the Tauranga Golf Club with scores of 65, 67, 64 and 68 in what was the final event of the Jennian Holmes Charles Tour for the 2017-18 season. “It’s a great feeling and great experience to win on this tour, especially one that is named after Sir Bob Charles,” a proud Mountcastle said. A highlight of his round came very early with a chip-in eagle on the second hole, but the only part which may have not gone to plan was leaving himself a slippery three-foot putt on the last hole to seal the deal. “The three-footer to win wasn’t the putt I wanted to leave myself, but it was very nice to see that go in and take the win.” If he had let this one slip by, tour-
nament officials were preparing for a mammoth four-way playoff, but the new champion found the centre of the cup with a silky-smooth stroke to join an elite group of amateur golfers to win on the Charles Tour. “The other amateurs that have won these events are achieving great things at the moment, so to join them is really nice,” Mountcastle said. Things started to really heat up down the stretch with Dongwoo Kang shooting a sublime round of six-under 64 to join the frenzy which also included Lachie McDonald and Mark Brown. As the lead chopped and changed throughout the final afternoon, Kang and McDonald will only remember their final hole bogeys which sadly cost them a chance of a playoff. Finishing earlier in the day, Hawke’s Bay professional Daniel Pearce has won the season long points race to the Jennian Homes Trophy today after another great season on the national circuit. Meanwhile in the women’s division of the Carrus Open, Brittney Dryland lead all the way to win by a convincing five-shots and claim her second title on the Charles Tour. With a round of two-under par 70

on the last day, which was her fourth consecutive round under par, the Aucklander shot out to a lead that made it near impossible for anyone to catch. Her previous victory on the national circuit was at the Akarana Open in Auckland two years ago, so she is starting to know and enjoy the feeling of being at the top. “It feels pretty amazing to play solid the whole week and to have four rounds subpar makes me very happy,” Dryland said. “It’s been a really busy start to the year with a few overseas trips and I think all of it has helped me get better every week and I’m really happy with where my game’s at.”

Daniel Pearce’s third win on the Charles Tour GOLF NEWS
D
aniel Pearce racked up his third win on New Zealand’s professional golf circuit when he took out the Akarana Open in Auckland. The Hawke’s Bay player had rounds of 66, 64, 66 and 65 to finish at impressive 19 under par in last month’s tournament sponsored by Barfoot & Thompson. Pearce ended up with a comfortable winning margin of three shots. His nearest rival was Gareth Paddison of Wellington who was the tournament’s defending champion. It was technically Pearce’s second win in a row on the Charles Tour, sponsored by Jennian Homes. The 29-yearold had won the previous Charles Tour event which was the Ngamotu Classic in New Plymouth last October. Pearce said you can’t beat the thrill of winning. “It’s a great feeling,’’ he said. “Winning is always fun and puts a smile on the face, so it was a good day out there today.’' Pearce said the win came despite a poor tournament with the driver off the tee. “This gives me a lot of confidence, the game is in pretty good shape and I now know I can win a golf tournament even when I’m hitting the driver so badly.” It was Pearce’s iron play that stood out through the week as he played the extremely challenging par threes in fine style, which are the strength of the Akarana Golf Club. “I think I played the par three’s seven or eight under this week, which is something I have never done in a tournament before. To have my iron play going so good was a nice feeling. “It’s awesome to win out here, the Jennian Homes Charles Tour is a great breeding ground for New Zealand golfers. Without this it’s really hard to progress yourself because we play overseas a lot, but if you’ve got nothing at home to play, to develop yourself and learn

Lee equalling a course record of 61 in the second round, followed by Kevin Koong’s consistency to finish alongside Lee in a tie for third place. Meanwhile in the women’s division of the tournament, Vivian Lu lead all the way to win her maiden Charles Tour event after fending off a courageous Darae Chung of Wellington to win on the last of the 72 holes. Lu set up her week with a superb opening round of seven-under par, but had to battle hard in the final round as Chung slowly caught her to co-lead beginning the final day. Lu looked to have taken control throughout the day before an amazing up and down from the trees by Chung which squared up the lead coming down the last hole. However, he trees weren’t so forgiving on the 18th as they swallowed Chung’s ball which forced a drop, ending the 13-year-old's challenge. Lu, from Auckland, said after the win: “It feels amazing. I’m very overwhelmed because I started off well, but struggled in the second and third rounds. “I will learn so much from this week because I was so nervous entering the final day, but it was nice to have my friend caddy for me and my family watching.”
awke’s Bay professional Daniel Pearce won the season-long points race to the Jennian Homes Trophy after another great season on New Zealand’s Charles Tour. The 29-year-old year will be remembered by his two wins in the Ngamotu Classic in New Plymouth and the Akarana Open in Auckland. Pearce picked up an additional $5000 in prizemoney, courtesy of Jennian Homes which continues to help grow the game and provide New Zealand’s leading amateur and professional golfers the opportunity to prepare for performing on the big stage. “It’s great to be rewarded after a long and pleasing season on the Jennian Homes Charles Tour. I want to thank Jennian Homes for what they are doing for the game and giving us the chance to play in our own backyard,” said Pearce. “It’s crucial to have tournaments like these at home with it giving us the perfect preparation to play well overseas and grow our careers. “I have had a tough couple of weeks to finish off, but I am stoked with what I achieved this year and hopefully I can build from here and play well in China.” The 2018-19 season of the Charles Tour begins in October.

Carnoustie preparing for it’s eighth British Open
T
he Open Championship returns to the links course of Carnoustie in Scotland in July. Carnoustie last hosted The Open in 2007 when Padraig Harrington was the winner. Harrington went on to win again the following year at Royal Birkdale. It will be the eighth occasion that Carnoustie has hosted The Open with the likes of Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Tom Watson and Paul Lawrie among those to have gone on to win at what is widely regarded as one of the most challenging courses in major championship golf. Johnnie Cole-Hamilton, executive director – championships at The R&A, said: “The Open is only a matter of weeks away and there is a great deal of anticipation for when the global sport-
ing spotlight once again falls upon Carnoustie for what will be a world class festival of golf. “It is always exciting to see the venue for the championship begin to take shape with the installation of the grandstands, spectator facilities and iconic scoreboards and we look forward to the arrival of many thousands of fans from all around the world in July.” A £5 million ($NZ9.6 million) extension to Carnoustie Golf Links Clubhouse opened last month. The community facility includes a bar and restaurant, locker rooms and caddie facilities, as well as a new pro shop. Seven golf simulator bays, featuring some of the world’s most famous courses, will also be installed in the building.

Drive for more women to play golf
G
olf’s major ruling authority The R&A is continuing its commitment to increase participation in golf among women and girls by providing funding to support the appointment of new development managers in Australia, England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Working with its affiliates around the world to enhance golf’s appeal, the investment forms part of The R&A’s drive to encourage more women, girls and families to play golf more regularly across the globe and to go on to become members of golf clubs. An initial three-year funding package of £75,000 ($NZ145,000) per nation has been agreed between The R&A, Golf Australia, England Golf, the Golfing Union of Ireland/the Irish Ladies’ Golf Union, Scottish Golf and

Japanese golfer has Nick Faldo impressed GOLF NEWS
M
ark down the name of Suzuka Yamaguchi from Japan as a golfer of the future — just as six-time major winner Sir Nick Faldo has. Six weeks after becoming the first female winner of the Faldo Series Asia title, Yamaguchi’s reputation as one of Asia’s most exciting golfing prospects has been further enhanced. Thanks to her triumph in the 12th Faldo Series Asia Grand Final in Vietnam in early March, the 18-year-old broke into the top-100 in The R&A world amateur golf rankings for the first time. Backing that up with impressive performances in the Japan LPGA Tour’s T-Point Ladies Golf Tournament and the ANA Junior Inspiration, Yamaguchi’s upward trajectory has seen her rise to a ranking of 70. Faldo said of Yamaguchi: “I was hugely impressed with Suzuka. In winning the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final, not only did she display tremendous skill, but also great composure. “Clearly she is an outstanding talent who has the ability to go a long way in the game – hopefully all the way to the top. “What has struck me is that she’s fared well in prestigious amateur tournaments around the world, showing she’s able to adapt to different conditions and cultures which are crucial attributes for a young golfer. “Furthermore, she’s also showing she can compete with the professionals on the Japan LPGA Tour. “We’re only a third of the way through 2018, but it’s already been a memorable year for Suzuka. I’ll be watching her progress closely in the months ahead.” Indeed, Yamaguchi has enjoyed a flying start to the year, becoming the first Japanese to triumph in the Australian Women’s Amateur Championship prior to her Faldo Series Asia Grand Final success. A fortnight after that, Yamaguchi was the leading amateur in the Japan LPGA Tour’s weather-hit T-Point Ladies Golf Tournament. At Ibaraki Kokusai Golf Club, she posted rounds of 70 and 73 to claim a share of 16th spot. The following week, she headed to America to compete in the ANA Junior Inspiration at Mission

Hills Country Club, the Pete Dye Challenge Course and the Dinah Shore Tournament Course. Undaunted by the long journey and the effects of jet-lag, Yamaguchi once more acquitted herself admirably, finishing joint sixth in a world-class field. The Faldo Series Asia is supported by The R&A and endorsed by the Asian Tour and the Asia Pacific Golf Confederation. The International Junior Golf
Academy is a partner of the Faldo Series. As well as two events in China and Thailand, the 2018-19 Faldo Series Asia season will include championships in Australia, Bangladesh, Chinese-Taipei, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam.
Big plans to develop Cambodia as an international golf destination
C
ambodia is setting its sights on growing its golf tourism industry. The Southeast Asian nation is becoming increasingly popular with foreign tourists, attracting more than five million visitors in 2016. Around seven million are expected by 2020. Golf tourism, however, is still very much in its infancy. There are currently nine golf courses in Cambodia. Four are in the capital Phnom Penh, including the country’s oldest course, Cambodia Golf & Country Club, which opened in 1996, the Grand Phnom Penh Golf Club course by Nicklaus Design and the IMG-managed Garden City Golf Club, which opened in 2013. Among three courses in Siem Reap are former Asian Tour venue Phokeethra Country Club and the Nick Faldo-designed Angkor Golf Resort, which opened in 2007. There are also two courses on the coast at Dara Sakor Golf Club, forming the first
14
part of a project by a Chinese developer in Koh Kong province. A further two Faldo Design courses are set to open soon at Vattanac Golf Resort, 15 kilometres from downtown Phnom Penh. The first course at the resort is due to open for play by later this year. Cambodia’s ministry of tourism secretary of state Chea Bora said the country saw the potential of golf tourism in Cambodia, having watched it become established in its neighbouring countries, Thailand and Vietnam. “We see the importance of golf tourism in Cambodia as well, but for Cambodia it is still at an early stage,” Bora said, although he added there was a significant increase in the number of people playing golf. Cambodia’s lure for golfers is underpinned by its appeal as a tourist destination, with the main attraction being the world heritage site temple complex near Siem Reap that includes Angkor Wat, the
world’s largest religious monument. Last year it was named the world’s top heritage site by review website TripAdvisor. “We have one of the best destinations in the world, in Angkor Wat,” Bora said. “If tourists want to come to see our temples, our destinations, at the same time they can play golf. I think that is one of the reasons we can become one of the best golf destinations.” A keen golfer himself, Bora is also secretary general of the Cambodia Golf Federation. He said that only around 500 Cambodians play golf, while the total of those and foreigners, mostly businessmen and diplomats, living and working in Cambodia is close to 1000. They generally play at weekends, leaving courses little played during the week. One of Bora’s aims is to increase the number of tournaments in Cambodia. The Cambodian Open was the country’s first professional golf tournament. Offering a purse of $US300,000, it formed part
May 2018
of the Asian Tour and was staged at the Phokeethra Country Club in Siem Reap from 2007 to 2010. Thai star Thongchai Jaidee was twice victorious. Bora said discussions are being held with the Asian Tour to bring another tour event to Cambodia, while he hoped to have a tournament with neighbouring countries in the near future. In terms of future golf expansion, Bora would like to see more golf developments on Cambodia’s coast. Dara Sakor Resort, which lies about 200km around the coast from the major southern port city Sihanoukville and its international airport, currently has two golf courses – one by the beach and one facing the mountains – as well as one hotel. The plan is for it to eventually have five courses and five hotels. He said there were also plans for more golf developments in Sihanoukville and on the coast in Kampot Province, 90 minutes to the east.

NZ Golf’s annual report for 2017 By Dean Murphy New Zealand Golf Chief Executive
I
recently had the great pleasure of presenting the 2017 activities of New Zealand Golf at our annual general meeting. The key message was that the organisation has enjoyed a very satisfying year and we are pleased with our continued positive progress. When we look back, 2017 will be remembered as being an exceptional year for our game and we believe the sport is generally in great heart. While there are many highlights to look back upon, we’ll fondly remember 2017 as the year when: - Our club support programme expanded to have national coverage and now support over 140 clubs; - Great championships, player performances and national marketing programmes drove the profile and positive perception of golf to new levels; - Michael Hendry became the first Kiwi
to win the New Zealand Open in 14 years; - The first ever LPGA event was held at the spectacular Windross Farm; - Frank Nobilio and Greg Turner were inducted to the New Zealand Golf hall of fame; - The Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship was hosted in New Zealand for the first time with the outstanding Royal Wellington Golf Club setting new standards for excellence; - Ryan Fox enjoyed a breakthrough year on the European Tour and Josh Geary qualified to join the ever growing list of players on the international circuit; and - New Zealand Golf established fantastic new headquarters at the Remuera Golf Club in Auckland. From a financial perspective, the business performed very well in 2017. We remained profitable and have added further strength to our balance sheet in what continues to be a challenging environment.
The group financial result (including DotGolf) sees a net surplus of $476,962, an improvement in the group’s cash position of $22,142 and group equity has grown to $2,719,597. New Zealand Golf’s operating surplus for the year was $173,160 which is a pleasing result and has contributed solidly to the group financial performance in 2017. With 2017 now in the books, we can look back over the past few years and see that sound decision making and management has ensured the organisation has considerably improved its financial position. A reflection of this improvement is the growth in equity from $1.6 million in 2014 to $2.7m in 2017. Despite the challenges in front of us, golf remains the highest formal participation sport in New Zealand with approximately 500,000 Kiwis participating in the game each year. A great deal has been achieved in 2017 and we are excited to
head into 2018 and beyond. We remain totally committed to working closely with district associations and clubs to continue to grow our great sport. We are all fortunate to be involved in a game that truly enriches the lives of its participants. No other sport can be played equitably, fairly and competitively by people all ages, backgrounds, genders and abilities. The path ahead is full of obstacles. However, if we think positively and we are prepared to work hard, we will be successful. Growing our sport is vital to us all and there is much work we all need to do in the future if we are to see our sport continue to thrive. Golf is uniquely positioned as a sport and we believe this uniqueness will see us thrive into the future. During 2018, we will launch a refreshed strategic plan and several new initiatives. We look forward to working with our sector partners to continue the growth of the game we love.

Be honest with yourself when considering coaching from a professional By Dominic Sainsbury New Zealand PGA General Manager
A
re you getting the most out of your golf game? Coaching is one of the best ways of enriching your golf experience, but how do you go about finding the right coach for you? Here are some useful pointers to help you get the best Professional Golf Association (PGA) pro for your game. First up, be honest with yourself and ask yourself what you are really hoping to achieve by having coaching. What are your targets and goals? · Are you a beginner looking to learn the basics, to enjoy a monthly social fourball with your friends · Are you the competitive kind who has just given up football or rugby and wants
to transfer that competitive streak to golf and be the best you can be? · Maybe you are a mid-teen handicapper with aspirations of reaching single figures · Perhaps you’ve been playing for 10 years and seen your game go backwards while your friends’ handicaps have come tumbling down · Or maybe you have struggles with a particular facet of the game such as chipping or putting There are a myriad of reasons why people decide to get coaching (and no right or wrong reason either) but being clear in your own mind from the outset will help you find the right coach for you. Among the questions to consider are: · How much time are you prepared to invest in improving your golf? · Is it a quick refresher on the fundamentals ahead of the season or is it a lon-
ger-term commitment that you are after to really maximise your potential? And what kind of learner are you? · Do you like one on one coaching, prefer the fun and social interaction of group coaching, a session at the range or the real time scenario of an on course lesson? Another aspect to consider is does your coach use modern communication methods. Many coaches utilise video and technology such as ball monitoring equipment in their coaching and can email you feedback and set you a practice plan that focuses on performance based practice. As you see there are lots of options so clarifying what is best for you is an important part of the process before investing time and energy in selecting a coach. Finally, perhaps the best piece of advice is to pick up the phone to prospective PGA pros or call in to a golf club or facility and

GOLFCOACHING By Anthony Barkley NZPGA Professional
L
ife as a club pro has caught up with me and by the time you read this article I will be a few weeks out from finishing up at the Rotorua Golf Club. It’s been fantastic working at a great club like Rotorua but I have decided to use my skills in another challenging industry, Real Estate. Its been an honour to be at the club. I will keep my PGA status, coach a bit and may even play more which will be awesome and will likely keep writing as I love the game. So what have I learnt as a club pro? Coaching: Our role as a club pro is to grow the game and I think to keep people in the game. Giving lessons is a must to help out members and its an area I have always enjoyed and how lessons are taught have evolved. Many professionals now use launch monitors for some lessons (like me) and camera is still a big part but with club members it’s more about making their own swing more consistent rather than make major changes.
100percentgolf.com
New directions Understand their swing not create a new swing. If coaching a 16 year old it’s different but for most, they don’t want to make major changes. Club Fitting: This area I have really grown to love as creating the right clubs for people is an art and everyone is different. The studio has really helped me grow this service and I can’t remember selling a standard set of clubs. It’s strange some companies still ask for shops to stock sets in store when almost all sales are custom. Time: Time is always the issue as a club pro if you are unable to afford enough staff. I wrote down a list of the duties we do for the club and in store and it was honestly pages long. I don’t think members understand how much we actually do which is frustrating at times but it’s just part of the role. We hear everything in the shop and often have to try and put
out a few fires along the way. It’s like any business where 60-80hrs per week is quite normal and incorporates time in the shop, processing fittings, lesson rundowns, website management, facebook, meetings, bookings etc etc. The biggest aspect is talking with members and visitors which is always interesting and often a laugh. I will miss some of the banter that occurs in the pro shop. Service: A strong service culture is something I am proud of in the shop. Its so important to try and go above and beyond with customers. Frustration when companies don’t back you our service which has happened from time to time. This is hard and you can tell that some customers don’t believe us that its the company supplying the products fault so I have almost given up saying this and just take it on the chin.
5 THINGS I WILL MISS
1. Member contact and the friendships you create in store. 2. Club fitting and simulator play 3. Seeing improvements through coaching-may continue. 4. Banter in store with staff and members 5. Talking with International visitors and members
5 THINGS I WON’T MISS
1. Cart breakdowns. 3 written off over Christmas was not fun. 2. Not playing enough and watching everyone else play☺ 3. The 12-13hr shifts 4. Daily Cart cleaning 5. Not being able to spend enough time with my family. So next time you see your pro, thank him for all the work he does, and much you don’t see. Understand it’s a lifestyle role we play and is often not as lucrative as you may think. Those days have well and truly gone. Unsure yet but at time of printing there may be some fantastic sales in store and online as we wrap up the shop operation.

NOOSA SPRINGS – WHERE KIWIS COME TO PLAY Why do nearly 70,000 New Zealanders visit the Sunshine Coast each year? Well, it may have something to do with the weather. While Kiwis shiver in 11 degree temperatures in July, beachgoers on the Sunshine Coast are still soaking up the sun and surfing the breaks. New Zealand tourists also come for the events and attractions, the laid back lifestyle, world class restaurants and the friendly locals (including more than 20,000 of their countrymen who love the place so much they chose to not go back). But for an increasing number of Kiwis, the lure is the quality and accessibility of
the Coast’s golf courses. Golf tourism is one of the region’s fastest-growing sectors. And the best of the courses is Noosa Springs, situated just a few minutes’ drive from Noosa Heads, and set amidst the stunning bushland of the Noosa hinterland. The 18-hole championship layout, lush and green with beautifully manicured fairways, meanders through tropical bushland and picturesque lakes. Chances are you’ll spot a few kangaroos lazing in the shade of the winter sun. Noosa Springs hosts a Q-school event
each December, where aspiring professional golfers vie for a spot on the Australian PGA Tour; and it’s a mecca for golfers – of all skill levels – from around the country. Hamish Robertson, a Kiwi who for years carved out a living from playing golf in Australia and New Zealand, loves it so much he’s landed a job at Noosa Springs as a teaching professional. Noosa Springs is more than just a great golf course. Its attractions include a world class spa, tennis courts, a well-stocked golf shop, friendly staff, a superb restaurant and bar overlooking the course, and
a fitness centre. And you never have to leave the property. There’s a range of superb accommodation, comprising not just spacious, air-conditioned units, but luxurious villas – boasting four and five bedrooms, media rooms, outdoor entertainment areas and their own swimming pools. Each year, from July to October, Air New Zealand flies direct from Auckland to the Sunshine Coast. We’d suggest you book early. »» www.noosasprings.com.au

NEWS FROM AROUND THE REGIONS
NORTHLAND GREAT WEEK FOR NORTHLAND WOMEN AT NZ MASTERS By Andrew Leventis andrewleventis312@gmail.com
While the team were unable to defend the title they fabulously claimed in 2017, they have still represented Northland with distinction and skill, in bringing home a second place finish and silver medal in the recent NZ Women’s Masters Tournament, held from the 6th to 8th of April at the Inglewood Golf Club in New Plymouth. The team of Kylie Jacoby, Alayna Cox, Jo Taylor and Jenny Peters accumulated 350 gross stableford points over the four rounds (best 3 of 4 per round) to finish only six points behind Waikato. It has been a fabulous few years for the Northland masters team who have truly found a good combination of players and team spirit which has led to unprecedented success for the district in this prestigious national tournament. Well done to the team on yet another great performance!
NORTHLAND GOLF – WORKING TO LINK SCHOOLS TO CLUBS
Realising the importance of introducing golf to kids at a young age to promote the sport at grass roots level, Northland Golf
in partnership with PJA Contractors (Paul Allen – “Get into Golf” coach) have been delivering programs at primary school level aimed at teaching golf skills, personal development and building a relationship with local golf clubs, throughout primary schools in the Northland district. The “Get into Golf” in-school programme has recently visited One Tree Point School over the past month to year 1-6 students. The first three sessions involved skill coaching, game play and fun challenges while the fourth session linked the school kids, parents and keen golf club members together so they could gain their first experience at the local golf club and play a few holes with their parents and supportive club members. One of the challenges of the game at grass roots level has always been forming the link between entry level school initiatives and giving them their first experience on an actual golf course. It is excellent to see this being addressed in the Northland Golf / PJA contractor initiative and the program has also been rolled out at the Kaurihohore School leading into the Term 2 holidays. Congratulations to Northland Golf on forming local relationships to promote the game to these young children, it is great to see these types of grass roots based and introductory initiatives. If you know of a school interested in this programme please email paul@golfnorth-

“SWEET GOLF ALABAMA” FOR BELINDA
On Wednesday 11 April, Belinda May signed perhaps the most life-changing document of her life. A Junior member of the Mangawhai Golf Club and, for some years, a major emerging talent on the New Zealand golf scene, Belinda put her name to a golf and academic scholarship agreement with Troy University of Alabama, USA. Her American Dream began in 2015 when she travelled to the famed Pinehurst golf complex in North Carolina to compete in the US Kids Golf Teen World Championship. After this amazing experience she knew she wanted to return and become fully immersed in the American golfing system. Now, 17-year-old Belinda and her supportive family team of mum Sherrall, dad Iain and brother Konrad (who first inspired Belinda’s interest in golf) have reached a moment in her life that has them all a little frightened and a whole lot excited. A proud Northland girl, Belinda has spent the last few months evaluating scholarship offers from more than 16 American universities - “all of them so incredible!” - before settling on Troy. She gave her verbal commitment to Troy University then had to keep the secret until her signing day when she could publicly announce the details of her commitment to Troy. “Troy University has a very strong athletic programme and the golf coach I’ll be working under has a great record in developing a player’s ability. The current TroyTrojans girls golf team has been chalking up some really strong results results recently, so this just seems the best opportunity for me,” says Belinda. “Troy’s not too big, just under 20,000 people live in the city, and I’m frantically reading as much as I can about the area so I can fit in quickly.” Belinda’s time at Troy will start in August – and it’s not going to be all golf. scholarship programme places a strong emphasis on achieving academic goals and she expects to complete her degree and then aims to gain entry to the Q School, the pathway to gaining a spot on the LPGA tour. She’ll be leaving Kamo High School with a strong list of scholastic achievement where she has excelled across a range of subjects. It’s these skills, along with her golfing abilities, that brought her to the attention of several strong universities and she’s determined to keep this successful balance in her life. “Belinda’s past year has been full on as she’s worked toward qualifying for a golf scholarship in the States,” says proud Mum Sherrall. “Her workload’s increased tremendously with extra practice, late nights, early mornings and lots of travel to tournaments around New Zealand. “The last 3 months have been really hard for her. She says that learning the SAT exam to get into a university in America was harder that her toughest round of golf. She’s sent so much paperwork to America that she’s probably cut down all the trees in Northland!” Belinda has been a member of the Mangawhai Golf Club for the past 3 years: “I love the course. NORTH HARBOUR JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT TEAMS DOMINATE IN 2018 OPENERS By Andrew Leventis andrewleventis312@gmail.com
The phenomenal strength of junior golf in the North Harbour district was on full display at the recent development quadrangulars that kick off the2018 junior representative season. This year Auckland came on board for the boy’s event (36 holes of gross stableford / stableford) meaning four teams (as opposed to three in past years) would compete for the development shield. On day one North Harbour led on 20.5 points with Bay of Plenty and Auckland trailing on 16.5 and 15.5 points respectively. On day two Bay of Plenty stormed back into contention finishing with 19.5 points for the day and 36 points in total. North Harbour however grinded out 16.5 points and would finish on 37 points total to claim the title. Auckland would finish third on 28.5 points with Waikato fourth on 18.5 points. Congratulations to the team of Logan Hooper, Jaewoo Son, David Chung, Luke Old, Luke Ho, Jesper Bengtsson, Arikinui Pecqueux, Cole Manson, Sam Dodds, Nicholas Svensen and managers

Rangi Lemon and Jonathon Ho for their great performance. Not to be outdone by the boys, the junior girl’s development team have also won their respective representative event held on the first week of the April school holidays in Hamilton. The event is a two day/3 match head to head match play battle. The six-strong team (like the boys) took on Auckland, Bay of Plenty and Waikato districts. By the end of the competition North Harbour was once again victorious making it two from two to start 2018! Congratulations to team members Jessica Green, Yeonsoo Son, Amy Im, Haeseung Yeom, Eunseo Choi, Eujin Kang and manager Glenda O’Connor for bringing yet another title home to North Harbour. Following on from a phenomenal finish to representative golf for North Harbour in 2017, this early success certainly illustrates the depth of talent in the district and that North Harbour is going to continue to be a considerable force in the junior representative scene. THREE TEAMS ATOP THE COVIC SHIELD TABLE
A field of fifty three COVIC players took the opportunity on Tuesday 17th April, to play a round of golf and have an awesome meal afterwards at the Awhitu Golf Club. The weather was fine with only occasional wind gusts while the course was playing harder, after recent rains have reduced the fairway run. In round 3 of the Shield Qualifying, Waiuku surprised with a winning team

score of 140 points one ahead of second place getters Clarks Beach (139). Third equal were Maramarua and Wattle Downs (138), fifth Awhitu (133), sixth Pukekohe (132), one ahead of Onewhero and Hauraki (131) in seventh equal, then Huntly-Waiterimu (127) 9th and Waikare (115) 10th. These results mean that three teams are now atop the Shield Table – Onewhero, Maramarua and Clarks Beach all having 10-points after three rounds. Awhitu are 4th (13), Waiuku 5th (14), Hauraki and Wattle Downs 6th= (16), Pukekohe 8th (18), Huntly-Waiterimu 9th (20) and Waikare 10th (24). The COVIC Challenge Cup matchplay event saw holder Maramarua gain another walk-over while the Craig Smith’s Pukekohe Pro Shop Player of the Day Award went to Hauraki’s Bob Rogers. Playing off a 16 handicap Bob shot a 78 gross score for a total of 42-points, clearly the best round of the day and a deserving winner of the Claret Jacket and a sleeve of Callaway Balls. Other top scorers were Maramarua’s Ces York and Clarks Beach’s Chris Hone who both shot 41-points, while Henry Robin of Wattle Downs returned with 40-points. The next COVIC round will be played on Friday 11th May at the Onewhero Golf Club. As a means of attracting more women entries, Onewhero will be trialling a seperate COVIC division for Women players at their event. Men and women playing extras are welcome and should either contact their club’s convenor to enter, or Onewhero’s host convenor Les Johns at lesleoniejohns@gmail.com.
QUALITY OF WOMENS GOLF IN AUCKLAND DISTRICT ASTOUNDS By Andrew Leventis andrewleventis312@gmail.com
The Auckland women’s top level representative team capped off yet another incredible year of representative golf in 2017 by winning their seventh interprovincial title in nine years. 2018 continues to be just as successful for their top representative players. In recent Charles Tour events at Akarana and Muriwai, Auckland players have dominated the top positions. At Akarana, Auckland’s amateur representative players accounted for 6 of the top 10 positions with the hugely talented Vivian Lu (Royal Auckland and Grange Club) winning the title
WWW.GOLFERPACIFIC.CO.NZ
at Akarana. This trend continued at the Muriwai Open with Auckland Golf players once again accounting for 6 of the top 10 positions of those that made the cut, Brittney Dryland (Tititangi) being the highest ranked amateur in 2nd position. The winner, which even further illustrate the amazing depth in Auckland over the years, was Munchin Key (pictured below) a former Auckland representative player who was a member of numerous interprovincial successes for the district. Both Brittany Dryland (Titirangi) and Caryn Khoo (Pakuranga) have also been named in the upcoming Queen Sirikit Cup to represent New Zealand in Thailand from the 9th to 11th of May. As per usual, Auckland are sending out strong signals with their performances to other districts round the country, that come the 2018 interprovincial in Christchurch, it is going to take something very special to deny them of yet another national title.
Jonglikit (St Peters School) Division Two – Jakob Bird (Rototuna Junior High) Division Three – Matt Dellar (Hamilton Boys High School) Division Four – Seiga Ikemura ( Hamilton Boys High School) Consolation – Oliver Leen (Hamilton Boys High School) This great junior golf initiative from Waikato Golf, and with the very capable assistance of the team at Te Awamutu, gives many junior players their first taste of competition golf and the match play format. Waikato Golf with the running of the junior interprovincial and other numerous other junior events place a great deal of emphasis on the promotion of the sport at the junior level. How great it is to see the district promoting the sport heavily at the junior/grass roots level. Well done!
WAIKATO WAIKATO GOLF INITIATIVE / SECONDARY SCHOOLS MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP By Andrew Leventis andrewleventis312@gmail.com
Waikato Golf has one again shown the importance the association places on junior golf initiatives in the running of the second edition of the Waikato Secondary Schools Match Play Championship. The tournament was held on Tuesday and Wednesday (20th/21st of March 2018) at the Te Awamutu Golf Club. This school golf and junior development initiative consists of 18 holes of stroke play in a qualifying round on the morning of the first day. After the first-round the participants are placed in four divisions (8 players per division) seeded in terms of their qualifying result. Knock out head to head match play then ensues where a champion is crowned in each division at the end of the second days play. There is also a consolation stableford competition on the second day for players that lose their matches in the first round of knockout play. The tournament integrates both boys and girls into the same divisions and there were 68 players entered from all parts of Waikato. Champions from the sections were as follows: Division One (Main Winner) – Focus
NEWS FROM COVIC
We are so spoilt with the present condition of our Counties District Golf Courses, Hauraki amongst them! “Probably the best playing conditions in twenty years!” according to COVIC Convenor Russ Ford. Hauraki’s greenskeeper Paul Mitchell has overcome a lot in life, including the fire loss of the Hauraki Greenskeeper Shed along with course machinery in 2017. Perhaps it’s the result of now having new technology mowers, but Paul and his staff has the course and its greens in superb condition. This was evident in the delight of the seventy three COVIC players who showed up for round 2 of the COVIC Shield on the 28th March. The round started with Huntly-Waiterimu leading the competition, but by the end they were down to sixth. It was previously

second placed Onewhero who had taken a convincing 4-point lead (on 3 points), over Maramarua (7), with Awhitu and Clarks Beach third equal (8), Hauraki fifth (9), Huntly-Waiterimu sixth (11), Pukekohe seventh (12), Wattle Downs and Waiuku eight equal (13) and Waikare tenth (18). In probably the closest day of competition over the last five years, three teams finished first equal with team scores of 152-points – Onewhero, Clarks Beach and Hauraki. They were followed by three more teams in equal fourth with 150 points – Maramarua, Awhitu and Waiuku. Pukekohe with 147 were 7th, Waikare and Wattle Downs with 139 were eight equal and first round winners Huntly-Waiterimu with 138 points finished 10th. The COVIC Challenge Cup matchplay event saw challenger Waiuku put up a mighty effort against the long. Term holders Maramarua. Waiuku looked as though they had done it with a 29.5 to 24.5 points lead after the first three matches. But it was Maramarua’s Owen Evens who delivered when needed, beating his opponent Frank McGrath 12 to 6, for the closest of one point team victories to Maramarua 36.5 to 35.5. The Claret Jacket winner of Craig Smith’s Pro Shop Player of the Day Award went to COVIC regular Glen Guy of Clark’s Beach (pictured). A first time winner of the award but long overdue. Playing off a 23 handicap, Glen scored 44 points, well clear of a group of four players on 41 points – including his team mate Brian Jenkins (19 handicap), Hauraki’s John Hayward (17), Maramarua’s Andre Ruiterman (31) and Waiuku’s Peter Blackler (17). They were followed by three players on 40 points apiece – Awhitu’s David Thomas (17) and Jim Ruiterman (25), along with Onewhero’s Dane Rasmussen (23). In an interesting competition where the players, were asked before the round to nominate the total amount of stableford points that they would end up scoring on the day, seven players or ten percent of the field chose correctly. All in all a fabulous day of golf and fun thanks to the efforts of Hauraki’s COVIC Convenor Stephen Crooymans and his support team. The next COVIC round will be played on Tuesday 17th April at the Awhitu Golf Club, located alongside the magnificent Awhitu Peninsula Reserve overlooking

the waters of the Manukau Harbour. If Onewhero can manage to rally together ten players for the day, they also hold the right to challenge Maramarua for the COVIC Challenge Cup. Limited extras are welcome and Awhitu’s host convenor Bruce Wilson can be contacted at awhitugolf@xtra.co.nz. The club also runs an excellent open mixed day event on the last Sunday of every month.

2018 NEW ZEALAND WOMEN’S MASTERS: THE MOO LOO’S HAVE IT!
Waikato have won the 2018 New Zealand Women’s Masters at Inglewood on 6-8 April, by a comfortable 6-point margin. Arguably spurred on by last year’s disappointing 4th equal placing on home soil in Ngaruawahia, they led in all four rounds of the 3-day tournament and were, ‘the team to catch’. The determined team had their ‘game-faces on’, with all four contributing to the teams 356 total.
Captain Jill Morgan was the top scorer with 122 personal points. However, her 27 gross stableford points today, were not needed when her three team mates had scores on the board totalling 90, enough to seal the win. The format of the tournament, which has not changed in 27 years is based on the cumulative total of the best three scores, gross stableford points, per team of four, per round, over four rounds. The win today was Waikato’s third, previous wins being in 2013 and some years ago in 2005. The team total while the best on the tough short Inglewood course, was some 23 points lower than the 2017 winning score, posted by Northland. There was some scepticism on the selection of the Inglewood course which is infamous for its numerous par-3’s and only two par-5’s, making par for the course only 68. Water hazards feature on all but one hole and with tight lies, it proved a challenge for many of the 56 district master players assembled for the 2018 Championship. However, it would be fair to say that Morgan, along with team mates, Robyn Pellow, Julie Gee, Pam Wright and travelling reserve Sian Stevenson, won’t be too bothered about the stat’s and comparisons, the Russell Grace Trophy is there’s for another twelve months. Northland, chasing back to back wins, had to settle for second place, six shots back with 350 points. No 1 Kylie Jacoby, the anchor of the team with 125 points, but like Waikato, all four players contributed to the team’s total. Prior to 2017, Northland had not featured in the prize table but they have proved over the last two years, they are a team to be reckoned with. Jacoby, Alayna Cox, Jo Taylor and Jenny Peters now have
a silver NZ Golf medal to sit alongside their gold won last year. Jacoby along with partner Nathan is the current NZ Mixed Foursomes Champion and is set to defend this title in Maraenui over Labour Weekend in October. Rocketing up the team placings was North Harbour who finished in 9th place in 2017, but this year, take home the bronze medal for third place. Team Harbour, Vaha Fapiano, Pam Sowden, Lynda Tate, Fleur Reynolds along with travelling reserve Annette Muir, also scored 350 points. Tournament conditions, dictate that the non-counting card was to be factored in the event of a tie, and so for 2018, they settle for 3rd. However, a huge change in form and one of the biggest jumps in team placings – arguably another team, that came to love their Inglewood experience. Only one point behind was Southland that had a rare ‘blow-out’ in yesterday’s second round but today showed again, the force they are, scoring the best round of any team over the tournament. Going from 2nd place after the first round, a tumble to 8th in round two, a solid third round and a stunning 98 points today, they finish in 4th place for 2018. While disappointed to not be on the

medal table, along with the best team score today, Robyn Pullar had the only par-round of the tournament with a 68 today. Birdies on the par 4, 3rd and par 3, 8th, her only blemishes being bogeys on the par 3, 2nd and the par 3, 12th. Southland’s captain Robyn Boniface demonstrated yet again her revered consistency claiming the Canterbury Shield for the best overall individual, with 126 points, for a record 7th time. Auckland started the day in 3rd place overall but will settle for 5th place with a team score of 345, down two places from the 2017 team standings. The Bay of Plenty posted 339 points, 6th place, a finish that is also down on their 2nd placing in 2017. The remaining eight districts jostled today for placing and finished with a mix of results. Aorangi, with 334 points, 7th place in 2018, compared to 4th equal in 2017. Taranaki despite solid daily performances could not match the likes of Waikato, finishing in 8th place, with 331 points, no change from their 2017 result. Hawkes Bay / Poverty Bay finished with 319 points, 9th placing, compared with 7th in 2017, two shots ahead of their close rivals, Manawatu / Wanganui. In 10th place, Manawatu / Wanganui jump one place from their 2017 11th finish. Wellington finished in 11th place, up one from 2017 results, on 309 points, one point ahead of Otago who started with a clear goal of improving their 2017 bottom place. They achieved this jumping two places to 12th, with a total of 308 points. Canterbury have gone backwards, down 3 places to 13th for a district that has won the tournament 5-times, their last win 18 years ago, while Tasman have finished at the bottom this year. The tournament is due by venue rotation to be held in Tasman, so hopefully Tracy Bary and her team can boost their standing with a home advantage in 2019. MANAWATU/WANGANUI SUCCESSFUL JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT QUAD
Manawatu Wanganui golfers took part in the Junior Development Quad and Shand Salver events at Rangitikei Golf Club last month. The event was played between the 4 lower North Island districts of Wellington, Manawatu Wanganui, Hawkes Bay and Taranaki. A total of 56 juniors compete from the 4 districts. The Shand Salver which dates back to 1977 was played at this event due to the timing of the Junior Interprovincial in 2017. The competition was contested amongst the top 4 available juniors from each district in off the stick matchplay from the championship tees. The competition between the teams was very close, and any of the teams potentially could have won, but the Manawatu Wanganui team of Anthony Ilton-Maher (Foxton), Bradley McSherry (Palmerston North), Kaleb Idemaru (Manawatu) and Ethan Dodds (Manawatu) prevailed with team wins over Hawkes Bay & Wellington, and a 2 all draw against Taranaki. Congratulations guys, great effort. The Junior Development Quad has now been going for 10 years and has evolved into an important development event on our annual calendar. This year for the first time combined both boys and girls into the 10 player team event. The format was off the stick matchplay for the top 6 players and matchplay off handicap for the in the bottom 4. This allowed teams to add players that are much earlier in their development stage. The purpose of the event is not so much about the winning, but the experience and learning, and I believe all players will be able to take away valuable learning experiences for their development. With players staying at Huntley Boarding School, it provides a real team experience. Wellington was the eventual winning team securing wins against all 3 other teams. Manawatu Wanganui finished 2nd with team wins against Taranaki and Hawkes Bay. The Manawatu Wanganui team was: Cameron Giddens (Levin), Lily Griffin (Manawatu), Jack Donaldson (Castlecliff), Ethan Ward (Feilding), Ryan Donaldson
(Castlecliff), Remy Early (Feilding), Nikhil Banerjee (Palmerston North), Sera Raj (Wanganui), Liam Magill (Feilding) and Jackson Dreliozis (Rangitikei). Aiko Jademongkalrat, an exchange student from Thailand, currently playing out of Manawatu Golf Club also competed filling a gap in the Hawkes Bay team.

BOYS HIGH WIN DISTRICT INTERCOLLEGIATE
Palmerston North Boys High School has once again taken out the district Intercollegiate competition at Marton Golf Club with a comfortable victory over their nearest competitors. Played last month the result always looked likely after Bradley McSherry shot a two under par 70 to also record the best individual boys gross score. Second best score went to team mate Kaleb Idemaru with a 76. Palmerston North Boys High School’s 3rd counting school was Ethan Dodds with a 79. Only one other boy broke 80, and that was Feilding High School player Ryan Rooney, also with a 79. That score helped Feilding High School in winning the team net competition. Palmerston North Boys High School will now go on to represent the Manawatu Wanganui district at the National Secondary Schools championship this year being played at Palmerston North Golf Club in September. In the girls Individual section, Manukura’s Tineka Kumeroa, and Palmerston North Girls High student Lily Griffin, tied for the best individual score with a 79. The trophy was awarded to Tineka on the countback system, with the best 2nd nine score. Summary: Best team Gross: Palmerston North Boys High School Best team Net: Feilding High School Best Individual Boys Gross: Bradley McSherry 72 Best Individual Girls Gross: Tineka Kumeroa on countback over Lily Griffin both shot 79. CHUNG RUNNER UP AT AKARANA
Vivian Lu has gone wire-to-wire to win her maiden Jennian Homes Charles Tour event at the Barfoot & Thompson Akara-
27
na Open after fending off a courageous Darae Chung to win on the 72nd hole. Played last month.Lu set up her week with a superb opening round of seven-under par, but had to finish things the hard way as Wellington’s Chung slowly caught her to co-lead entering today’s final round. Lu then took control throughout the day before an amazing up and down from the trees by Chung squared things up coming down the last hole. The trees weren’t so forgiving on the 18th as they swallowed the 13-year-old’s ball which forced a drop, ending her challenge. Our newest winner on the national circuit was very satisfied with her week and will take a lot of learnings from it. “It feels amazing, I’m very overwhelmed because I started off well, but struggled in the second and third rounds,” said Lu. “I will learn so much from this week because I was so nervous entering the final day, but it was nice to have my friend caddy for me and my family watching.” Although the Auckland amateur is unable to receive prize money, she walks away with a new Iphone after her Dad had a slip of the tongue which she cashed in on to claim the biggest victory of her career. Chung who ended the week two-shots behind will mark this down as a hugely successful week as the 13-year-old from the Shandon Golf Club, continues to grow. In third place was former champion Brittney Dryland who was unable to repeat her 2016 efforts to finish with a tough final round of two-over. In the Men’s Tournament, Daniel Pearce has won his third Jennian Homes Charles Tour title by claiming the Barfoot & Thompson Akarana Open by three shots this afternoon at the Akarana Golf Club. Pearce showed his experience this week with rounds of 66, 64, 66 and a composed 65, to hold off defending champion Gareth Paddison who finished in outright second. This also means the 29-year-old has recorded back to back victories on the Jennian Homes Charles Tour, with the last event being the Ngamotu Classic in October 2017, which he also won in convincing fashion. Wellington’s Dan Hillier-Manor Park (74,68,66,65), Kerry Mountcastle-Masterton (71,70,68,68) and Jordan Loof-Royal Wellington (67,67,72,75) all featured at the top end of the field
FORRESTER AND CUI WIN AT TRUST HOUSE WAIRARAPA 54 HOLE OPEN
Sam Forrester was the victor by one shot from provincial captain Jonno Cane with Elton Nicholson a shot further back in 3rd place . Played last month, Erika Cui was a repeat winner after last year’s victory.

TASMAN NBS OPEN TOURNAMENT RESULTS
SATURDAY 24th MARCH 2018 – NBS Open Tournament Report Saturday morning started off rather wet but the skies cleared and it turned out to be a beautiful day. There was a keen group of 94 players who competed for 2 men’s and 1 ladies division. Due to the wet conditions, following 3 days of rain, players were given a 1 club length placing. The putting surfaces were in magnificent condition. The over 30 visitors to the club really appreciated the presentation of the course by Brendan and his team. Special thanks to the tournament sponsor Peter Havill and NBS. Thank you also to support sponsors being Bowater BMG, who offered a brand new car for a whole in one on the 3rd, and Hello World Nelson, Total Golf and Blue Berry IT. The tournament organisers congratulate all the winners and thank the many volunteers who ensured a well run event. Results are as below:

What It Is
Play When It Suits You
Paying expensive fees each year can be a burden and you need to play many games to get value for money. Warkworth Golf Club has made it easy to play when you want and guaranteed value for money with our Go f4Me membership. It’s planned to fit in within your budget and your lifestyle.

How It Works
19
The Go f4Me card is like a golf debit card. To get going, load it up with an easy $250, and then you top it up as and when required from as little as $10. It’s fully value for money because your credit has no use by or expiry date. Once you receive your card you can use it to pay for substantially reduced rounds of golf saving you $$$ on the regular unaffiliated rate, purchase items in the Divot golf shop and food and beverages in the club rooms.
Do You Have a Competitive Streak? Then why not become an NZ Golf Affiliated member. You will receive near full playing rights and the ability to join in competitions, not just at Warkworth but all of New Zealand. Imagine playing the Christmas Cheer event at Hikurangi, one of those must play events. The NZ Affiliated fee is just $60 per year and of course you can pay it with your Go f4Me card from your $250 start up fee. This is a golf membership targeted for today’s busy people with limited time and tight budgets, it means you CAN have it all and you CAN have it now.

Odyssey Exo: A New High-Moi Putter Line
N
ew premium line of Tour endorsed multi-piece high-MOI Putters using classic head shapesOdyssey, the #1 Putter Brand in Golf, has today revealed a high-MOI mallet putter line with the launch of its EXO range. Bringing together elegant detailing and Tour level performance with some of the finest finishes ever seen in an Odyssey Putter, the EXO line marries the on-trend Red and traditional Black putter look in one technology-rich package. All three multi-piece designs take inspiration from two classic head shapes in Rossie and Number Seven and a more recent shape, the Indy, from Odyssey’s Toulon Design family. Each head is precision-milled, with a weight-saving aluminium red section contrasting with an elegant, milled black

stainless steel body that drives significant increases in MOI, pushing putter performance to new levels for all golfers. On impact with the golf ball, an all-new White Hot Microhinge Insert – a slightly firmer Tour-developed insert with an identical feel to the Tour’s ‘gold standard’ White Hot insert – imparts pure roll thanks to Microhinge Technology. To give each Odyssey EXO Putter a premium look, each head is skim-milled, a light, yet precise milling process that refines edges and corners while giving the surface a beautiful sheen and feel. Sean Toulon, General Manager of Odyssey Golf, said: “Red putters in a way have reinvigorated the market, whilst Black putters are more timeless, and now we have a family of super highMOI designs that incorporate both colours so beautifully.
“Odyssey EXO is the culmination of some of the best looks and technology and the putters look amazing. Our Tour players love the sound, they love the feel and the cosmetics are striking.” Each head, engineered slightly bigger than the original design thanks to the weight-saving red aluminium section, are offered in either face-balanced or toe hang ‘S’ slant neck models, giving golfers every option to match an Odyssey Putter with their stroke-style. The Odyssey Seven EXO, Indy EXO and Rossie EXO come in 35" shaft lengths. The 7S is also available in a left-handed option. Odyssey EXO Putters will be in store from May 18th 2018. »» PRICING »» NZD: $549.99 R.R.P. »» For further information about the complete Odyssey product range visit http:// www.odysseygolf.com.au/
