Martin Davidson Action hots up in the lounge
ou know summer has arrived when it’s teeming down outside but inside the action is unfolding via the rectangular box in the corner of the lounge. That was the case last month when the marvels of modern broadcasting brought us live coverage of the Australian Masters in Melbourne and the Hong Kong Open virtually back to back. New Zealand interest in both tournaments was high, with a dozen or so Kiwis plotting their way around Kingston Heath and Michael Campbell continuing to resuscitate his career in the former British colony. That interest was spiked by the form of our touring professionals as Campbell was the joint leader with swaggering Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez after 54 holes at the storied Fanling course while Mike Hendry was tucked in behind the leader at the halfway stage across the ditch. While Hendry’s run stalled big time with a back nine meltdown in the third round he hung tough in the final round while the Wellington pair of Mark Brown and Gareth Paddison thrust themselves up the leaderboard. When the dust had settled and the winner’s

cheque had been presented to Australian Adam Scott, the three New Zealanders had all secured top-six placings. Scott, with Kiwi caddie Steve Williams toting his bag, was a class apart in finishing at 17-under-par 271, but Brown, Paddison and Hendry all showed touches of brilliance to figure prominently. Brown and Paddison tied for third, eight shots back of Scott and four behind colourful Englishman Ian Poulter, each boosting their bank balance by $73,500, while Hendry, despite that third round 79, made every shot count over the closing 18 holes to tie for sixth and earn a touch over $43,000. Hendry’s collect was enough to keep him atop the Australasian order of merit heading into the New Zealand Open at Clearwater. Up in Hong Kong, Campbell, the outright second round leader, was in the final pairing with Jimenez on the Sunday, holding out the promise of ending a seven-year winning drought. It wasn’t to transpire, of course, as Jimenez
fired a 65 to win by one from Sweden’s Fredrik Andersson Hed, while Campbell’s charge spluttered to a halt before his topped his second from fairway rough into water at the last hole for a double bogey six. By the end his two-over 72 saw him slip back to a tie for eighth, but his second top-10 result in as many months on the European Tour added more fuel to hopes that he has indeed turned his career around. If Campbell needed inspiration he didn’t have to look far. Five weeks shy of his 49th birthday, Jimenez became the oldest winner on the European Tour. It was his 19th tour title and the eighth since he turned 40. That alone tells 43-year-old Campbell that the good times can roll again. After finishing third in the Portugal Masters in October, he is starting to stack up the sort of form which will see him challenge to add to his career title tally. Oh, and before I forget, merry Xmas. I hope your ball rolls smoothly over the festive period.

Turner back on course By Martin Davidson
W
ell, look who’s back. Greg Turner has returned to a fairway near you with his sights set on a career comeback via the European Seniors Tour in
2013. Turner hogged much of the attention last month when he threw his hat into the ring for the New Zealand Open at Clearwater, his first top-level tournament since quitting the game in 2003. It marked his first tentative steps on a trail which in all likelihood will lead Turner to Europe next year. He turns 50 in February and his career earnings of more than 3 million euro on the regular tour there from 1986 to 2003 give him exempt status on to the seniors circuit. He has yet to fully commit himself to sharing tee space with senior colleagues on the continent next year but admits the odds are that he will. The idea of returning to regular competition surfaced after Auckland-based Australian Peter Fowler, who won twice on the European Seniors Tour 2011, got into his ear about joining him on the far side of the world. Fowler’s encouragement led the Queenstown-based Turner to serious consider the option, ultimately leading to his conclud-

ing there was nothing to hold him back. Turner has been far from idle since announcing his playing retirement in late 2003. He was the driving force behind the establishment of the domestic Golf Tour New Zealand, a mini-circuit offering opportunities for this country’s leading amateurs to play alongside the professionals. That circuit has since morphed into the Charles Tour. As well, he has established himself as a course designer of note, working with his savvy and highly credentialed business partner Scott Macpherson on a number of projects, including the extension at Millbrook, the makeovers at Cromwell, Oreti Sands and Harewood and the $7 million facelift at Royal Wellington. They have also just started work on sprucing up Russley in Christchurch. Turner said the Royal Wellington project was running six to nine months ahead of schedule and all going well he expected members to be able to play a fully redeveloped 18 holes as early as April. Aside from that, Russley and another new project in the development stage for south of Christchurch, Turner said there was little on his and Macpherson’s books to fully occupy him during the winter months next year. Hence, playing the seniors circuit would fill a hole, and enable him to reacquaint
himself with the game while also gaining first hand knowledge of any changes in course layout and design that he could dovetail into his own design work in future. When Turner stepped away from the playing aside of the game, after winning 12 titles worldwide, including two New Zealand Opens, and appearing for the victorious International team in the 1998 Presidents Cup in Melbourne, no one expected to see him back on the course in anything but cameo roles. “It is not something I envisaged even five years ago but the reality is, looking through the order book of the design business, we are not that busy through next winter,’’ he told Golfer Pacific NZ. “So what would I be doing? I’d probably be thinking I must get out and look at some courses around the world – some of the new stuff I haven’t seen and reacquaint myself with some of the older stuff. “So there are a few things lining up which suggests it (playing again) is an op-
You’ve got to discover whether (i) you can be competitive and (ii) benchmark in your own mind where you are, where you need to be and how far that is.
tion I should look at seriously.’’ To do that, Turner said he had to get himself match fit, hence his appearance at the New Zealand Open, and likely participation in the New Zealand PGA Championship at The Hills starting in late February plus some domestic seniors events later in the summer. “You’ve got to discover whether (i) you can be competitive and (ii) benchmark in your own mind where you are, where you need to be and how far that is.’’ Turner dusted off his clubs for the Harewood Open in October when he was pleasantly surprised to make the cut before finishing 25th in the Charles Tour event in Christchurch. The New Zealand Open was at an entirely new level again, but he went into the championship happy enough with his ball striking. “I’m hitting a surprising number of good shots and I am reasonably comfortable that that side of things if fine. “It’s a matter of how quickly you can redevelop what you loosely might call course craft; whether half a dozen tournaments will sharpen that up... one of the reasons for doing this is that I need to find that out.’’ Turner said if he felt he could be competitive there was nothing to stop him from heading to Europe for a couple of six-week stints during the winter. “I’ll have the time to do that and I suspect it is something I will want to try. “If we had three or four projects coming on line the time wouldn’t be there but that’s not going to be the case.’’

Compton tames conditions
T
e Awamutu teenager Compton Pikari added another feather to his cap with a composed victory in the 35th Omanu Classic. He and the rest of the field battled particularly testing conditions on the first day of the 72-hole tournament during which he produced a classy four-under-par 68 in driving rain. The wind then got up the next day but Pikari held firm as he was more than kept honest by William Howard (Rotorua). Only one shot separated these two with two holes to play, with Pikari, in the group behind, holding the advantage. Pikari parred the par-three penultimate hole with a tidy up and down from behind a tree after over-shooting the green then kept a watchful eye on the action ahead of him as Howard bogeyed the last. After a good drive Pikari had a downhill lie into the strong wind to reach the green. A perfectly executed six iron drew the ball into the flag and while it slipped off the side off the green a simple chip and putt sealed the title. Pikari finished on even par 288, with Howard making do with his 290 for a very creditable second place. Aside from Pikari, only two others bettered 70 in the tournament, with 18-yearold Jordan Golding (Omanu) shooting 69 in the opening round before finishing ninth equal, while Brad Kendall (Mt Maunganui) posted the same number on the opening day before a wind-buffeted 77 in the third
round derailed his hopes. Eddie Burgess (Tauranga), a former back to back Omanu Classic winner in the 1990s, took out the mid amateur (over 30s) title while finishing ninth equal against the young guns in the field. Arthur Parkin (Maungakiekie), getting in some tournament golf before another seniors event overseas, also proved that age and experience offer much in challenging conditions for a creditable finish in the top 20 as well as the fourth best nett score. Ho Jung Sung (Hamilton) took the best nett prize home. National representative Munchin Keh (Titirangi) topped a strong women’s field with a four round score of 300 allowing her to hold off Chantelle Cassidy (Tokoroa), with Omanu 14-year-old Alanna Campbell in third place.

Priceless exposure for NZ
N
ew Zealand has received some priceless exposure as a golfing destination. Some of this country’s most exclusive courses have received rave reviews in a 100-page story in one of China’s biggest selling golfing magazines. With a monthly circulation of more than 350,000, China’s Golf Digest last month dedicated an entire edition to showcasing New Zealand as a premium golfing destination. Top courses such as Cape Kidnappers, Kauri Cliffs, Clearwater and Jack’s Point were profiled in a 104-page feature entitled `Fantastic New Zealand’. Four writers from Golf Digest visited New Zealand, hosted by Tourism New Zealand, this year.
Over 10 days, the media group travelled the country visiting courses in Northland, Auckland, Hawke’s Bay, Canterbury and Queenstown. New Zealand major winners Michael Campbell and Sir Bob Charles, and Trade NZ chief executive Kevin Bowler were interviewed. Trade NZ’s general manager of corporate affairs Chris Roberts said golf was a specific interest area for Chinese travellers to New Zealand. He estimated the coverage in Golf Digest was worth an estimated $1.9 million in equivalent advertising value. “The publication allows us to engage directly with a targeted audience and raise their awareness of what we have to offer,’’ he told media.

Waikato make history
T
he long wait was worth it when Waikato won the Freyberg Masters crown for the first time in 26 years at Maraenui in Napier. They dominated the tournament to record eight wins from eight encounters to lift the silverware for the first time since the event was first contested in 1986 at Paraparaumu Beach on the Kapiti Coast. Waikato signed off with a flourish on the final day, securing successive 3-2 wins over Taranaki then Auckland, the most successful team in Freyberg Masters history with 10 titles. They were superbly led by their No 1
Andrew McKechnie, who won all of his eight matches, often under pressure, and was rightfully named as the player of the tournament. Seven-time champions Wellington rallied late to draw 2.5-2.5 with 2011 champions Canterbury in the final round to secure second place. Aorangi, who beat Hawke’s Bay and Bay of Plenty on the final day, performed outstandingly well to finish third, just reward for their consistent play. Auckland finished fourth, Canterbury fifth and North Harbour sixth after all falling victim to Waikato.
Final standings: Waikato 8.0 points 27 individual wins (Andrew McKechnie, Wybo Veldman, Phil Hunter, Ken Shea, John Gatley), Wellington 6.5 24 (Peter Brinsdon, Frank Borren, Rodney Barltrop, Malcolm Gullery, Myles Averns), Aorangi 6.0 26 (Jason Leary, Simon Wright, John Smitheran, Peter Fox, Robbie Bell), Auckland 5.5 25.5 (Brent Paterson, Martin Tumata, Michael Barltrop, Tom Duffy, Mike Leitch), Canterbury 5.5 24.5 (Scott Ritchie, Andrew Dufton, Aaron Forsyth, Paul Bailey, Jason Sincock), North Harbour 5 25.0 (Mike Leeper, Reg Fleet, Phil Mosley, Mark Dawson, Rob Noffke), Northland 4 23 (Bob Shirley, Tony Mayo, Paul Young, Scott Wilson, Iain Power), ManawatuWanganui 4 21.5 (Malcolm Wells, Stuart Smith,

The boys’ squad consists of Jason Yoo (Waitikiri), Compton Pikari (Te Awamutu), Sean Masters (Kaitaia), Nick Coxon (Narrows) and Kadin Neho (Whangarei) while the girls’ squad is Wenyung Keh (Titirangi), Te Rongopai Clay (Titahi), Lita Guo (North Shore), Tyla Kingi (Opotiki) and Laura Hoskin (Arrowtown). The event format will include competitions for men’s individual, women’s individual and a team event (two men and two women) in 72 holes of strokeplay. Golfers must be under the age of 18 at January 17, 2013, and there is a handicap limit of 3.4 for the men and 6.4 for the women at the time of entry. The inclusion of golf for the tournament, run by Golf Australia and the Australian Olympic Committee, acknowledges the fact the sport is awaiting its
Olympic Games readmission in 2016. Golf was an Olympic sport in the 1900 and 1904 Olympics. “Seeing golf back at the Olympics is a very exciting time for the sport,” NZ Golf high performance manager Gregg Thorpe said. “The Australian Youth Olympic Festival is a great opportunity for our young golfers to get a taste of what competing at the Olympics would be like. “It is a great initiative from the Australian Olympic Committee and it provides an opportunity to introduce New Zealand’s emerging talent to international competition.’’

cott Hellier was the standout as Southland successfully defended their South Island interprovincial title at Balmacewen in Dunedin. It was a timely confidence boost for the reigning national interprovincial champions ahead of the Toro tournament at the same course early this month. While the composition of the team will change from an eight-man to a five-man lineup, there was much to admire in the Southlanders’ performance, headlined by Hellier playing in the No 3 position. He was the only player in the 40-strong field to emerge with an unblemished record, his four wins contributing significantly as Southland opened with a 4-4 stalemate against Otago before beating Tasman 5.5-2.5, Canterbury by the same margin and Aorangi 7-1. The Southland side, which also featured Liam Balneaves, Tyler Mclean, Jeremy Hall, Matt Tautari, Kyle Dobbie, Jason Osborne and Daniel Mills, finished with 3.5 points and 22 individual games. It left them a full point ahead of Otago, with Canterbury pipping Tasman for third on individual games and an understrength Aorangi tailing the field. Southland were without New Zealand’s leading amateur Vaughan McCall, who was contesting the Asia-Pacific championship in Thailand, but his absence did
not hold them back, an encouraging sign ahead of the national tournament, which McCall was also to miss because he chose to accept an invitation to play the Australian Open. Other important contributions for Southland came from No 4 Jeremy Hall with three wins and a half while No 8 Daniel Mills was also unbeaten with two wins and two halves. For Otago, No 1 Brent McEwan, Mark Collie and Kayne Wardell all emerged unbeaten with three wins and a half each. Other unbeaten players were Oscar Cadenhead, Michael McAuley (both Canterbury) and former Balmacewen junior Thomas Facer, who played at No 7 for Tasman. Final standings: Southland (Liam Balneaves, Tyler McLean, Scott Hellier, Jeremy Hall, Matt Tautari, Kyle Dobbie, Jason Osborne, Daniel Mills) 3.5 points 22 games, Otago (Brent McEwan, Michael Smith, Brandon Hodgson, Samson Kim, Tony Giles, Mark Collie, Kayne Wardell, Jamie Anstiss) 2.5 points 21 games, Canterbury (Owen Burgess, Harry Bateman, Jason Yoo, Tom Turner, Sam Purdon, Oscar Cadenhead, Daniel Laughton, Michael McAuley) 2 points 16.5 games, Tasman (Hamish Campbell, Ryan Chisnall, Tom Dasler, Nick Ludbrook, Glen Drummond, Nick Loach, Tom Facer, David Riordan) 2 points 15 games, Aorangi (Cameron Grant, Daniel Perham, Garth Simpson, Jordan Green, George Wardell, Daniel Green, Adam Marshall, Matt McLean) 0 points 5.5 games.

Munn falls short
J
osh Munn fell agonisingly short of his target when losing the final of the Argentine amateur championship. Munn (Manawatu) belied his 28th seeding to advance to the 36-hole decider at Estancias Golf Club before going down 5 and 3 to Spain’s Antoni Ferrer Mercant. The match was a tight affair before Mercant, the 10th seed, took control from the 26th hole to seal the win in the prestigious event. After losing the first hole, Munn responded by winning the following three holes to earn an early 2 up advantage. Mercant hit back with birdies on six and eight to get back to all square then Munn lost his way on the back nine as he made bogeys on the 10th and 13th to gift his op-
ponent a 2 up lead. He birdied the 14th for a win but Mercant was again 2 up when he made birdie on the 15th, an advantage he took to into the second 18. The first six holes of that 18 were halved before Mercant made a telling birdie on the seventh to jump to a 3 up lead. Munn tried to force the issue and bogeyed the 27th hole to see his opponent take a 4 up lead with nine holes to play. He bogeyed the next as well and although Munn rallied with birdies on the 29th and 30th holes further bogeys on the 32nd and 33rd ended the contest. Christchurch’s Jordan Bakermans also impressed before being eliminated in the quarterfinals when losing 1 down to Canadian Garret Rank.

Caddies wanted
A
s I was watching golf this evening on television, I saw some amazing golf shots. What really got me was the banter between the players and the caddies, as they waited on the tees or walked between shots. Everyone seemed to have so much fun that I wished I was there. No, not as a player, as I know how stressful that is, but carrying the bag of a good player who is shooting a sharp score and moving up the leaderboard. As a junior at Miramar Golf Club in Wellington, I often caddied for some good players in Wellington events and in the Duncan Cup. One year, I even caddied for Greg Turner in the Miramar Open. I then worked for 12 months as a professional caddy at Pebble Beach in California. It was probably the best “working year” of my life and I met some very interesting people and caddied in two AT&T American PGA Tour events. Wow, they were great memories. It actually cost me a lot of money – one day I was tipped to buy Microsoft stock and stock in a Semiconductor company by a San Francisco stockbroker and his Silicon Valley mate as I guided them around
the course. That was in 1989. What a pity I didn’t take the caddy money and buy those shares. Now, I am looking for caddies. Actually, I am looking for over 100 caddies in my role as the caddymaster for the NZ PGA Championship at The Hills in Queenstown at the end of February. Caddies need to arrive at The Hills no later than 10am on the Wednesday morning (February 27). Ideally you should be ready a day earlier because most of the professionals like to play a couple of practice rounds and break in their new bag carriers. Yes, caddies do receive payment, and it varies based on how well the player plays and if the “pro” makes the cut. But on average most caddies receive $50 per day and usually end up with some extra golf balls. This year there were some great caddy stories that will now be memories for life for those caddies. Many will be coming back and some will be picking up the bags for the players they carried for this year. Back at the “caddy shack” we heard a lot of funny stories and it was always “we played well” or “he played average” or
golferpacific.co.nz Resident Pro at Chisholm Park, Dunedin
“he had too many bogeys”! One of the young caddies explained it really well when I asked him what he thought of the golf course: “Wow, it’s long and now I know why they call it “The Hills” with all the walks up to the elevated tees.” The common theme was to “be fit” and have “strong shoulders” but that it is a lot of fun and very exciting to be inside the ropes of the tournament. For the caddies who are not fussed about caddying for a professional, we do require about 40 caddies for the amateurs and the celebrities who will play on the Saturday and Sunday of the tournament. This will not be as intense as caddying for a professional but will still give you that sense of excitement of being inside the ropes and watching some great golf. However, I cannot guarantee you will caddy for Ian Botham or Nick Farr-Jones or any other of the celebrities, as most of the caddy allocation is random and sometimes the “name players” will have friends come and enjoy the experience with them. So if you would like be a caddy at the 2013 NZ PGA Championship please email me at nzpgacaddy@hotmail.co.nz. It will be great to have you on the caddy crew.

between the wars, with only 36 members on the register in 1946 when the annual subscription ($NZ2.10) remained exactly the same as in 1913! Since then, membership has grown steadily to over 400, comprising about 220 full or vocational members, 60 tour professionals and 35 trainees, with the balance made up of senior/retired and honorary members. That growth has not been without its challenges: for example, the NZ PGA Championship, first played for in 1920, went into recess for 17 years from 1987 to 2004 before its rebirth at Clearwater and, of course, now at The Hills. The past century will be remembered not only for great players such as Andy Shaw, Sir Bob Charles, John Lister, Frank Nobilo and a number of others who have
won on the world stage, but also for club professional stalwarts such as Stuart Cox, who recently completed an astonishing 60 years continuous membership with the PGA of New Zealand. Over the next few months, we’ll dig into some of the less well known members who have made huge contributions to the game of golf in this country not only through their playing skills but also as coaches and club professionals who laid the foundations for the PGA to swing on through to its next 100 years. The PGA centenary in 2013 will be celebrated with a number of activities, including the New Zealand PGA Foursomes Championship in Dunedin in October to acknowledge the origins of the association, and a gala dinner in Auckland the following month. In the meantime, we here at the PGA of New Zealand want to extend our season’s greetings to all, with the hope you enjoy a happy summer of golf.

McCall leads way for NZers
N
ew Zealand’s top player Vaughan McCall was the leading Kiwi at the Asia-Pacific amateur championship in Thailand. The Gore 21-year-old carded a three-under-par 69 in the final round at the Amata Spring Country Club near Bangkok to finish on a three-under total of 285 in a share of 14th place. He was 12 shots back from China’s Tianlang Guan as the 14-year-old won by one shot from Taiwan’s Cheng-tsung Pan to secure an invitation to the 2013 Masters at Augusta National. Guan and Pan both earned spots in international final qualifying for next year’s British Open. McCall, 13th in the individual standings at the Eisenhower Trophy world amateur teams championship in Turkey in October, made a fast start in the final round. He birdied three of the opening six holes to climb the leaderboard before a double bogey on the par-three eighth stalled his progress and saw him make the turn in one-under 35. He added further birdies on the 15th and 17th coming home to sign for a 69 and secure another top 15 finish in a quality international field. It continued McCall’s fine season after he became the first player in 24 years to win both the New Zealand strokeplay and New Zealand amateur titles in the same year. He will rue his third round of four-over 76 that dropped him from the top seven to

Tasman’s Blair Riordan was another shot back after signing off with a disappointing 75. Bay of Plenty’s Peter Lee finished tied 29th and Compton Pikari tied 55th and North Harbour’s James Beale shared 57th place. New Zealand is still searching for its first success in the Asia-Pacific tournament. Ben Campbell finished third last year and Peter Spearman-Burn fourth in 2010. The event is organised by the Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation (APGC), the Masters Tournament and The R&A, and featured 120 players from the APGC’s 36-member associations.

ydia Ko, the world’s best amateur woman, has confirmed that she will once again grace the fairways of the The Hills near Queenstown for the New Zealand PGA Championship in late February. On the back of another record breaking year, including victory in a top field in the LPGA Tour’s Canadian Open, Ko is sure to be one of the main drawcards in the invitational amateur field for the event, where she will be one of 68 amateurs (up from 62 this year) to be teamed with the professionals, as part of a two-ball, best ball competition over the final two days of the tournament. Organisers have already announced that Ko will be lining up alongside English cricket legend Sir Ian Botham in the amateur field. Ko, pictured with coach-caddie Guy Wilson and American actor Don Cheadle), competed in the championship this year and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. “The NZ PGA Championship this year was an absolute blast and I had so much fun,’’ she said. “It’s not often that you get to play alongside a Hollywood star, give golf tips to the Prime Minister, and take on the top male pros, so I was very keen to come and play in the tournament again. “When you add in the amazing course and all the great activities that you can do in Queenstown it was an easy decision to make. Last year was my first trip to Queenstown and I loved it, the tournament was fantastic, it’s set in a beautiful place, and had a great atmosphere. I’m really looking forward to coming back.” Fifteen-year-old Ko’s stocks have soared this
Lydia Ko with coach Guy Wilson and Dean Cheadle. NZPGA year with her victories in the Canadian Open and US amateur championship, as well as finished as the top amateur at the British Open. NZ PGA Championship organising committee chairman John Hart said Ko headed the list of invitees in the amateur field and he was thrilled to confirm that she would be playing again. “Lydia was a major drawcard for fans last year, with some of the largest spectator galleries following her group, and we hope that even more people will take the opportunity to come out to watch her in person and to see what makes her such a special player. “This will be an increasingly rare chance to see one of our top sporting talents up close as her international profile and reputation continues to grow.” The Australasian PGA Tour-sanctioned championship is on February 28 to March 3, with 2012 winner Mike Hendry and runner-up Mark Brown confirmed starters.
Our Favourite Courses For a country of such modest size New Zealand boasts an enviable number of golf courses that would hold their own – and more – anywhere on the globe. The country’s much admired land-
scapes offer a magnificent array of backdrops – from the coastal splendour to be enjoyed high above the sea on American philanthropist Sir Julian Robertson’s two North Island gems at Kauri Cliffs and
Cape Kidnappers, to the jaw-dropping beauty of Central Otago which looms large over Millbrook near Queenstown. And in between these splendid layouts are any number of golfing venues to chal-
lenge, inspire and woo the most discerning of players. In a sweep from north to south, we feature the very best New Zealand has to offer.
Terrace Downs Kauri Cliffs Just 30 minutes from Kerikeri in the Bay of Islands in Northland, Kauri Cliffs has gained a worldwide reputation for its incredible panoramic views as much as its quality golf offering. While the majority of holes hug the coastal bluffs, the remainder of the course features beautiful inland holes that wind through marsh, forest and farmland. Designed by American David Harman, the 6510m par-72 course overlooks the nearby Cavalli Islands and is consistently ranked among the top 100 golf courses in the world. While out of the way, it is well worth the effort to visit.
Wairakei International Long regarded as one of our premier venues, Wairakei International near Taupo is everything it is built up to be. Established in 1970 as a green fee facility rather than a club facility, the course is open to all who are passing through. Wairakei is firmly established on both the domestic and international golf radar, having been rated by the prestigious US Golf Digest magazine to be in the top 100 courses in the world outside of the United States. A par-72 it plays to 6444m off the blues tees in an amphitheatre setting surrounded by thick forest. A magnificently memorable layout with numerous dog legs, elevation changes and scenery to die for. It is part of a 180ha wildlife sanctuary, native birds abound while 200 mixed colour pheasant and a small herd of fallow deer are being reared on site, within a deer-fenced area.
Titirangi An inner-city gem, Titirangi is one of the very best metropolitan courses in the country. In the west of Auckland, it is the only Alister MacKenzie designed course in New Zealand. MacKenzie’s designs are admired for producing holes that offer an ideal balance of risk and reward and after designing Titirangi in 1927, he went on to design some of the world’s top courses, including Augusta, Cypress Point and Royal Melbourne. Over the last few years, millions of dollars have been invested in an upgrading programme, confirming Titirangi’s reputation as one of the best golf courses in New Zealand. The par-70 course features elevated tees, rolling fairways, challenging bunkers and greens with pronounced undulations. Its par threes face the four points of the compass so no matter what the weather conditions, you experience a different test on each hole.
Very handy to Christchurch, arguably this country’s capital when it comes to the number and variety of quality golf courses of offer, Terrace Downs won the 2010 World Travel Awards as New Zealand’s leading golf resort. Perched on the edge of the spectacular Rakaia River, the resort boasts stunning high country views up to Mt Hutt and is within close proximity to various ski fields. The par-72 6440m championship course includes 11 lakes and 70 bunkers with something to test even the most experienced golfer. Players will remember every hole, use every club in their bag and eagerly anticipate the next day’s play. Possibly the most exhilarating hole is the diminutive par-three 16th which plays to just 130m from the back tees. It’s not the length of this hole that stops you in your tracks, it’s the scenery. The tee box hangs on the edge of the gorge and towers about 200m above the Rakaia River that tumbles along below.
Millbrook Cape Kidnappers The sister property of Kauri Cliffs, Cape Kidnappers is just 25 minutes from Napier in Hawke’s Bay. Stretching to 6533m off the blue tees, it is at the very top end of the market and ranked inside the world’s top 100 courses. A tough, tough test, particularly if the wind blows above the coastal cliff faces. Accuracy is paramount because it is not advisable to spray the ball about, both for financial reasons (lost balls are commonplace) but also for safety purposes because often a missed fairway means a sheer drop to the Pacific Ocean below. It is the second of Sir Julian Robertson’s unforgettable gifts to New Zealand’s golfing landscape.
Very close to Queenstown, a magnet for tourists all year round, Millbrook opened in 1992 and was originally designed as 18 holes by Sir Bob Charles. In 2010, the new Coronet nine-hole course was added and four of the original holes were redesigned by Greg Turner. The course suits every type of player and there are five tee options to choose from. Club tees for both ladies and men measure 4450m and 5410m stretching back to tournament and professional tee for the longer hitters. Millbrook prides itself on the condition of the course during the golfing season, with fairways beautifully stripped and true, smooth greens. The course rewards the straighter hitters and if you stray from the shorter grass, the long brown top rough and bunkers definitely make up for the lack of trees.

Lee comits to 2013 Springfield Open Danny Lee will continue to give back to New Zealand golf with confirmation the 2013 Springfield Open will once again be sponsored by the country’s top ranked professional golfer. Springfield Golf Club club captain Mike Dragovich said it was wonderful news to hear that Lee and his family had once again committed to the legacy they had started in Rotorua where a young Danny learned much of his game. “Danny and his family have never forgotten their time here in Rotorua with us and this is their chance to give to a new generation of golfers while supporting our club,” Dragovich said. The Springfield Open has been running for seven years and next month will be the fifth time it has carried Danny Lee’s name. “Their generous support allows us to put on a high class amateur golf tournament where players get great value for their entry

and the under-23 players are subsidised through Danny’s pledged support,” he said. While Lee is fighting to retain his playing rights on the US PGA Tour with former Bay of Plenty representative Jason Laing on his bag, preparations are well underway for the 54-hole Danny Lee Springfield Open on January 11-13. An AM AM ambrose event for tournament sponsors and invited amateurs will be played on the Friday afternoon while the championship proper will be played over 36 holes on the Saturday followed by 18 on the Sunday. Mt Maunganui is a must visit locatio n
A LAND O Bay of Plenty is aptly named when it comes to options, whether it’s for golf or other leisure interests. The great weather means that golf is available somewhere in the Bay, with all of your expectations and challenges well catered for by the many courses which are seldom, if ever, closed. The courses (some with management/professional services) throughout the region provide golfers with a great variety of challenges and unique experiences. Booking is essential for the main courses. The coastal strip – taking in Katikati, Tauranga, Te Puke, Whakatane, Ohope and Opotiki with inland courses at Te Teko and Kawerau – provides a fantastic range of top rate courses and golfing options ranging from parkland to links layouts. Mount Maunganui Golf Club is one of the feature courses (parkland/links) of the Bay with its magnificent greens and fairways, and closely followed by the attractive and challenging Ohope International links course, while Tauranga provides a different experience, as
does Whakatane. The thermal area of Rotorua-Taupo-Turangi and its neighbouring courses of Murupara, Waiotapu and Lake View presents courses that are unique, challenging and top rate. Resort courses Kinloch and Wairakei, which are very close to Taupo, present another high quality sphere of golfing experience. Visitors to the Bay of Plenty are blessed with a myriad of activities to fill in their time away from the course. There is an abundance of scenic and alternative activities (surfing or fishing on the coast at Tauranga and Whakatane, to skiing, trout fishing, hunting, jetboat rides, bungy jumping etc) at Taupo-Turangi) to excite the appetite of all. The region’s main centres of Tauranga, Rotorua, Whakatane and Taupo are each within a one-hour drive of at least a dozen golf courses. The Bay of Plenty has a history of producing top golfers, including Danny Lee, Josh Geary and many others, and is a high profile district with a group of developing amateurs performing well in national representative tournaments.

NEHO NAILS IT DANGAN THE CHAMP Samantha Dangen emerged a comfortable winner when the Northland women’s champion of champions strokeplay event was staged at a magnificently presented Whangarei last month. Dangen (Whangaroa) won the silver division after shooting 77 and 78 for a 36-hole total of 155 to see off her nearest challenger, Sjanna Bonnington (Wellsford), by eight shots. Ngunguru’s Moira Pullman won the bronze division, while Mickey McKegg (Northland) was the runner-up, and Kerry Pevy (Whangarei) took out the senior 18-hole competition ahead of Kyra Rapana (Houhora). There was more success for
Kadin Neho did the business when the Northland junior age group strokeplay championships were staged at The Pines. Neho (Whangarei) carried off the boys’ under-19 gross honours with a 36-hole total of 149, showing consistency in putting together rounds of 75 and 74. That left him six shots clear of Ben Kennedy (Houhora), who took the nett honours on 146. The boys’ under-16 competition saw Braden Keown (Waipu) blitz the field, his gross rounds of 73 and a very hot 65 leaving him 11 strokes to the good of Ben Bowmar (Whangarei) and Julian Fowler (Northland). Relative newcomer, Casey Attwood (Hikurangi), had the best day of his golfing career to easily win the nett prize with
scores of 62 and 58. The three gross winners for the girls were the same as last year – Racheal Williams (Hikurangi) in the under-19 division, Jodi Macalister (Northern Wairoa) in the under-16s and Soktaera Sean (Northland) in the under-13s, the latter after a sudden death playoff against her twin Soktaerodh.
WELLSFORD KEEP TROPHY Wellsford retained the Le Garth Trophy by comfortably repulsing a challenge from Whangarei. Their lower order came to the fore to register a 7.5-2.5 success after No 1 Darren Ashwell and No 3 Wayne Gravatt lost to Kadin Neho and Nira Kingi respectively. Wins for Wellsford were posted by Graham Rhead, Kevin Mitchell, Jason Rhead, Les Harvey, Stephen Gravatt, Lincoln Smith and Butch Chadwick while Craig Radford came from five down to earn a half against David Wright.
SHERWOOD PARK TWO-DAYER Chris Cleave and Ann
Hathaway claimed the major prizes when Sherwood Park hosted a two-day veterans tournament. Cleave (Sherwood Park) produced the best men’s gross score of 167, six ahead of the runner-up Malcolm Burrell (Northland). Hathaway (Bay of Islands Kerikeri) likewise won the equivalent women’s competition with a total of 173, three better than Glenis Webb (Sherwood Park). The best men’s nett of 138 was produced by Bruce Pickford, with Bob Langford (The Pines) running him close on 139, while the women’s nett was won by Pat Smith on 143, with Jeannie Allen second on 145. MILLER GETS NOD Remuera visitor Graham Miller trumped the locals when Mangawhai held a Summer Lake Series haggle last month. Miller ensured the trip north from Auckland was worthwhile as he compiled a winning 44 points. Brian Browne was second on 42 on a countback from Paul Rennie while Hira Wynyard and Ernest Hurley both posted 40 points. Ray McIntyre and Ray Hutchinson had 39, Don McLean 38 and Jim Burke (The Grange) and Peter Bridge 37. Miller, McLean, Hurley and Hutchinson all posted twos.
since 2000. The combination of Robert Bedwell, Liam Pilgrim and Sean Wakelin romped home with 130 stableford points to take the top spot. Wakelin was the best contributor with 53 points on his own. Peninsula were second on 128, boosted by Rocky Price-Jones’ contribution of 51 points, while third place went to Gulf Harbour on 115.
PUPUKE CLEAN UP Pupuke members cleaned up when their club hosted the North Harbour nine-hole provincial event. The gross honours fell to Ruth Alvey while Christine McFadzean took out the nett, with Chris Rasmussen the runner-up.

McIntyre, who shot into contention thanks to her second round collect of 41. Another to perform strongly in the second round was Linda Anderson, whose haul of 43 promoted her to third on 69, two ahead of Marilyn Trent, with Shelley Good, Margaret Cook and Val Dale all banked up on 66.
LISSINGTON WITH EASE John Lissington was a cut above when Waitemata held the Dave Crowe Memorial Trophy seniors stableford in November. He had plenty of breathing space, with his winning haul of 45 points creating a four-point lead over the second placed Tyrone Low. Sue Storck (Pupuke) topped a strong visiting contingent to finish third with 40, while Laurie Hewitt was next with 39, followed by GP Singh (Titirangi) with 38. Vivien Gunn (Waihi), Tony Kermode (Maungakiekie), Frank Bland (Warkworth), Ben Storck (Huapai) and David Houng-Lee (Titirangi) all had 37 points.

DELIGHT FOR DARBY Neil Darby had plenty to smile about when the Redwood Park men contested a scramble round early in November. Darby did just enough, collecting 43 stableford points to hold off Kevin McGurk on 42. Peter McSkimming was outright third with 41, while Malcolm Saunders nabbed fourth with 40 on a countback from Simon Allen, Stephen Hanham, John Atkinson, Michael Holloway, Paul Biddle and Terry Lee.
AUCKLAND GOLF TRAIL AN ON THE UP Sam An timed his run nicely to win the Auckland strokeplay championship at Manukau. An (Titirangi) held his game together in the final round when blustery conditions unsettled a number of his rivals, among them Tyler Hodge (Levin). Hodge, who opened his account in the 72-hole event with a round of six-underpar 66, led An by four shots entering the last round. But by the turn An, the Auckland No 1, grabbed a lead he was not going to re-

linquish as he went out in three-under to Hodge’s two-over. And whereas Hodge faded to a 77 and a tie for third, An calmly plotted his way through the back nine to finish with a 71 and a total of five-under 283. It completed a tidy performance from An, the only player to posted four successive sub par efforts after earlier shooting 70, 71 and 71. It was just enough for him to hold off Luke Brown (The Pines) by one shot after Brown came home strong with a closing 69 to claim second. Brent Curnow (Pukekohe) and Hodge tied for third on 285, while Josh Leitch (Maungakiekie) was another stroke back in fifth. Cameron Jones (North Shore) was next on 287 while Tom Brockelsby (Hamilton) was another shot back in seventh place, immediately ahead of Neel Ram (The Grange) and Shiv Sabherwal (Howick) on 289. The top 10 was rounded out by Nick Voke (Manukau) on 290.

him a six-shot advantage over the second placed Sam An (Titirangi). Koh had started with an unconvincing 73 but then reeled off rounds of 68, 72 and 70 to distance himself from the field. Neel Ram (The Grange) claimed third on 290, one shot in front of Nick Voke (Manukau) and Josh Leitch (Maungakiekie).
... AND SO DOES KEH New Zealand representative Munchin Keh came from behind to win The Grange Women’s Open 54-hole tournament. Keh began the last round trailing her Titirangi clubmate Brittney Dryland by two shots before taking full toll of Dryland’s struggles. While Dryland posted an 82 to slip into a tie for third, Keh coolly posted a 72 for a 220 total and a four-shot win over her sister Wenyung (also Titirangi). Dryland and Brooke Hamilton (Maungakiekie) shared third place on 228, while Kristin Farrell (Waitakere) and Larissa Eruera (Aviation) tied for fifth on 232, one shot ahead of Sai Ma (North Shore).
CHINESE CUP LAUNCHED The inaugural James Law Auckland Chinese Cup attracted nearly 100 entries at Akarana. Held just one day after the Akarana club championships, the course was in great shape although the fast greens were a challenge in the gusty conditions. Winning the men’s gross division with a score of 74 was North Shore’s Han Jun Yu. Julie Liu (Pupuke) won the women’s division with a gross 89. In the team competition it was China v Taiwan v Hong Kong, with Taiwan emerging on top after their top 10 players scored 342 stableford points. Tournament organiser Simon Cheung is hopeful this will become an important annual event for the growing Chinese golfing community in Auckland.
BARRY TOO GOOD Glenice Barry could not be denied when a Melbourne Cup Extravaganza stableford was staged at Pukekohe last month. The fairer sex occupied the top three spots, with Barry the best of them with a collect of 45 points, followed by Elaine Findlay on 42. Elizabeth Montgomerie was third with 41 on a countback from Kenneth Neal, while Colleen Glasgow, Anne Woodward and Brian Thompson all impressed to score 40. Trevor Stevens and Celia Wright scored 39 and 38s were returned by Sandra Stevens, Peter Gatland, Dennise Biddick and Lyn Sibley.
WAIKATO GOLF TRAIL BE IN TO WIN The Waihi Golf Club are hosting the 2013 Newmont Golden Quartz four-day tournament on January 3-6. It will be the fifth edition of a popular tournament which attracted a full field of 128 players in 2012. Entries are still open, however filling fast! As an additional attraction next month, the tournament is offering the Newmont Golden Nugget hole-in-one cash prize of $5000 on the 146m par-three sixth hole. The remaining three par-threes will also be sponsored by 2 Degrees for product to the
value of $1000. Hole-in-one prizes will be on offer for all four days of the tournament. The Waihi course has stood up exceptionally well to a wet winter and club officials anticipate the conditions will be excellent for the 2013 tournament. Pictured are Mike Rose, Colin Keightley, Rick Carter (Newmont Representative), Rodger Bagshaw, Deane Tetley and John Drent.
BRYANT HEADS CLASS Wayne Bryant was too good down the home straight as he won the Melbourne Cup day stableford tournament at Cambridge. Bryant was first across the line with his 45 points, giving him a winning margin of two points on Ashley Lynn. Duncan MacGillivray filled the next minor placing with his 41 points to claim third, ahead of Rollo Webb, adjudged fourth with his 40 in a photo-finish with Stuart Hale. In the fillies’ section, Audrey Turner did just enough to win with her 40 points, ahead of Rosemary Bennett 39, Karen Bodle 38 and Pat Gould 36. The winning team with 55 points were the Noble Wallys featuring Wally Jones, Bob Noble, Dean Clarke and Don Campbell.
PRESIDENT THE BOSS There was no arguing with Taumarunui president Keith McKenzie when the club held a par competition last month. McKenzie was in a class of his own to finish an amazing 11 up, which equated to a nett 59. Left in his wake were Murray Craig and Lain Bacon on +4, Allan Brown +2, Jason Simpson and Barry Smith +1, and Garry Grimes, Huck Lawson, Rodger Bartlett, Ken Detman, Laal Bhullar, Alan Ferguson and Cliff Hayes all square.
OGILVY SNEAKS IN Tristin Ogilvy kept the locals at bay when Ngaruawahia held a scramble competition last month. Ogilvy (Te Kowhai) emerged victorious when his 43 points saw him win on a countback from Eric Sigley. Ronald Davis also needed a countback to separate him from Ra Harris after they both scored 41 points, while outright fifth on 40 was Keith Stuart, followed by Laurie Mardon 39 and John Loveridge, Stephen Leatherland and Malcolm Catley on 38.

GOOD SCORING AT HAURAKI Hauraki members got their acts together when staging a Liquor King Open nett medal tournament last month. Sharp scoring kept everyone honest, with Clifton Hallum topping the men’s field with his 62. Tucked in behind with 63s were Stephen Smyllie and Barry Flooks, while Sam Thompson and Andrew Watson scored 65s, one better than Frank Hayward. Leading the way among the women was Caroline Lynch with her 64, one ahead of Susan Saunders, while Michelle Sutton posted a 67, Kathy Karl 68 and Margaret Bergerson and Janet Davis had 70s.

tery won the Pacific Coast Village 72-hole mixed foursomes’ Stanley Cup on their home course from Omanu’s Joshua Tamihana and Wai Wyatt. Previous winners of the trophy, the Flatterys (pictured with tournament convenor Ray Horsfall) were keen to reclaim the cup and put in some hard work, playing in the Rotorua mixed foursomes as one of their leadup events. There were any number of likely favourites in the division who faltered along the way, among them Pip and Owen Kendall (Mt Maunganui), Alex and Raewyn Te Moni (Ngaruawahia), Martin and Tarraleigh Te Moni (Ngaruawahia), Steve and Leslie Haggie (Cambridge), Mike and Ricky Leitch (Auckland), and Geoff Winchester and Claire Davison (Mt Maunganui). All divisions were hotly contested with many matches requiring a “putt-off” to decide
the winner. Highlights of the weekend, apart from the weather and the course presentation, were June and John Winstanley scoring a two on the par-four seventh hole, and the dead heat for closest to the pin by Steve Snow and Steve Haggie. A full field of 80 pairs competed over the five divisions.
BOP KEEP SHIELD Bay of Plenty have extended their remarkable record in the Garrard Shield quadrangular interprovincial men’s tournament. The combination of Brad Kendall, Peter Lee, Sam Davis, Victor Janin, Landyn Edwards, William Howard, Craig Hamilton and Cam Neal locked away the shield for the seventh successive year with victory at Royal Auckland. Bay of Plenty tightened their grip on the silverware by beating Northland 5.5-2.5, Auck-
land 4.5-3.5 and drawing 4-4 with Waikato. Lee emerged with three wins and Howard had two wins and a half. Bay of Plenty’s buoyant mood was helped no end by the success of the under-19 team of Bailey Smith, Charlie Hillier, John Campbell and Chris Charton, who won the Ralph Cup for the first time since 2008 after beating Northland 3-1, Auckland 2.5-1.5 and Waikato 3-1. The dual success followed both teams’ wins in the earlier Central North Island quadrangular at Taupo, where the Bay of Plenty men beat Eastland 5-3, Taranaki 7-1 and ManawatuWanganui 6-2. The under-19s were equally as dominant, beating Eastland 4-0, Taranaki 3-1 and Manawatu-Wanganui 2.5-1.5.
SUCCESS FOR BOWDEN The main toast was for Lynne Bowden when the provincial
nine-hole champion of champions was held at Ohope. Bowden (Taupo) topped the champion division gross with her 42, four strokes clear of the runner-up Noeline McAuley (Whangamata). McAuley posted the best nett of 29 and combined with Galy Hooley to see Whangamata win the team nett as well. In the runner-up division, Jan Cattermoul (Tauranga) topped the netts with a 33, ahead of Judith Bunyan (Whakatane) with her 38.
KINGI CROWNED Tyla Kingi made her statement early en route to victory in the Bay of Plenty Women’s Open at Whangamata. Kingi (Opotiki) took a firm grip on the 54-hole tournament when posting 69 in the first round. She then followed up with rounds of 78 and 75 for a 222 total and a four-shot victory

DELIGHT FOR DIANE Diane Bland’s Christmas came early when she topped the board at the Otumoetai women’s Xmas stableford last month. Bland posted a winning 40 points, two clear of Colleen Jarratt, with Katie Winiata and Mel Edwards managing 36, Sue Moeke 35 and Jan Moyes and Karen Morley 33. The men’s Xmas nett on the same day saw Bruce Hills in irrepressible form, holding sway with 58 to be two shots ahead of Frank Bullen and Stan Hill. Robin Allison and Bob Morris shot 62s, and 64s were turned in by Jon Bell, Gary Wikohika, Tony Ryan, Glenn Boyer, Richard Shore and Bill Kennedy.
NUMBERS GAME We all know golf is a numbers but this is stretching it. John Foley achieved his first hole in one
after playing the game for 20 years when he aced the 160m par-three ninth at his home Mt Maunganui course last month. His perfect eight iron caused plenty of discussion in the clubhouse later when it dawned on those present that Foley’s ace created a statistical oddity. The new men’s club captain used an eight iron to ace the ninth hole on the 10th day of the 11th month of 2012. Run together that’s 8-9-10-11-12.
defending champion Bruce Phillips 3 and 2 while Casey Whanau won the junior title. Ev Gibbs made it back to back titles in the women’s intermediate division with a come from behind 1 up win over Wendy Burnand while Carolyn Davidson had a comfortable win over Anne Honeyfield to win the junior title. In the men’s 18-hole limit final Elton Whakatutu beat Nick Williams 5 and 4 to win his first matchplay title.
UPSET FOR POWELL
TARANAKI GOLF TRAIL SELECTOR SHOWS HOW Representative selector John Newland showed he could do more than simply judge the abilities of others when claiming his first senior championship title at Patea. But he was made to work hard by Darcy Faiers for his 1 up success in the 36-hole matchplay final. The women’s final saw Kathy Faiers collect her 22nd senior title with a decisive 8 and 7 win over Jenni Newland. In the intermediate men’s final, Greg Huston overcame an early deficit to defeat
Damien Powell produced an upset to win Manukorihi’s senior men’s matchplay title. Powell played sub par golf to beat the more fancied Carey Hobbs 4 and 3 in the 36-hole final. Wayne Hall pipped Kenny Leonard 1 up to claim the intermediate title while the junior division went to Ian Titter, who had a 5 and 4 win over John Van Der Leeden, and the limit final went to the 19th hole before Ben Chamberlain prevailed over Trevor Hughes. In the women’s finals, Lesley Elliott took out the bronze one division with a 5 and 4 win over Jo Foreman and Tere Hodges won the bronze three division with a 4 and

Rhonda Miller (Westown) and Glenys Scheliin (Stratford) were another stroke back. The major nett prize went to New Plymouth’s Karen Vandenberg (50-17-33), who beat Stratford’s Ann Gordon (53-20-33) on a countback.
CAWLEY IN A CANTER Tony Cawley made short work of Grant Kite to win the Stratford senior men’s matchplay championship. The 36-hole final never went the distance as Cawley prevailed 6 and 4. The intermediate final saw Jeremy Johnson upset his father Terry to win 3 and 1 while the junior title went to Kris Kretschmar thanks to his 6 and 4 success over Murray Cook. Another decisive result came in the 18hole limit final where Robbie Barnard beat Ray Reitzama by a 6 and 4 margin.

determine the overall winners. A total of 43 players competed, with the field made up of both locals and visitors from many of the Wellington clubs, particularly Wainuiomata, Karori, Shandon and Royal Wellington. Playing conditions for the qualifying round proved very testing, with strong winds and very slick greens resulting in some less than impressive scoring as only three players managed a 79 and everyone else was in the 80s or higher. However, the weather did settle down and the remainder was played in reasonable conditions. The overall winner of the championship group (handicap 10 and under) was John Warner (Featherston), who also received the South Wairarapa Challenge Cup. The best nett qualifying score was produced by local veteran Adrian Blackett with 67 to win the Charlie Watt Cup. Next year there will be a change in format, with both a 72 and 36-hole strokeplay options for all contenders, plus the tournament will have order of merit status, which is sure to boost numbers.

won the men’s title with a gross 69, just ahead of Sam Bridgen on 70. Bridgen had the consolation of winning the nett division with 64, on countback from Barry Boyed. Due to the generous sponsorship of Penny Mason from Risk Management Services, Kapiti hosted a women’s section for the first time. It was won by Ngaire Trappitt with a nett 70, ahead of Sharon Menzies and Robyn Stringer on 72.
DAVIS REPEATS
Lucy Davis retained her Wellington matchplay title by beating top qualifier and Manor Park clubmate Julianne Alvarez 2 and 1 in a tight final at Shandon. The two top qualifiers easily won their first round matches but both were extended in their semifinals, with Davis beating Imogen Donnelly-Lawrence (Manor Park) 3 and 1 and Alvarez beating Alanah Braybrook (Boulcott’s Farm Heritage) 2 and 1. Davis made a great start in the final to be 2 up after two holes before Alvarez halved the margin by winning the fourth with a par. But Davis extended her lead to 4 up by winning the fifth, sixth and eighth holes, with Alvarez responding with a birdie at the ninth to stay in touch. The next four holes were halved in pars and despite Alvarez winning the 14th with a birdie she was running out of holes. The next three were halved, leaving Davis to celebrate a successful defence of her title.
CUMMINS PREVAILS AT KARORI
Ross Cummins held his form nicely to win the City of Wellington Classic at Karori. Cummins (Wainuiomata) was forced to a playoff by Anaru Reedy (Karori) after both posted 74s in regulation, with Cummins winning the title after extra holes. Kevin Rice (Paraparaumu Beach) grabbed third place with his 75, while Jacob Forty (Royal Wellington) and Darin Hiroki (Mornington) both shot 77, Dave Clarke (Karori) and Michael Trass (Miramar) 78, and Peter Grace (Miramar), Bryan Pengelly (Wainuiomata) and David Van Drimmelen (Karori) 79. Cummins also took out the senior nett with his 66 as well as the stablefords with 40 points. The junior men’s gross was won by Ken Spark, who shot 86, Satish Chandra (Karori) took out the nett with a 66 and the stableford with 40 points. The women’s gross honours went to Ga-

Wales by six strokes after carding a oneunder-par 71 in the final round. The former national amateur representative had rounds of 72, 65, 71 and 71 for a nine-under 279 total at Club Catalina Country Club to comfortably hold off defending champion Matthew Cort, of England, and New South Welshman Alex Edge.
(Men’s gross winner Ross Cummins is pictured with Anaru Reedy, who he beat in a playoff).
BEVAN BEATS THEM Peter Bevan was a clear winner of a Sunday stableford contested by Otaki members early last month. Bevan had his way thanks to his haul of 46 points, leaving him to enjoy a four-point buffer on Bert Lombard. Henry Williams grabbed third place with 41, just ahead of Thomas Gambitsis with 40. Twos were slotted by Bob Symonds, Jeremy Simpson and Don Moselen.
TITLE FOR MACKENZIE Brent Mackenzie lived up to his top seeding to win the Masterton senior men’s matchplay title. He and Gavin Harris jousted for much of the first round before Mackenzie won the 18th hole to go 1 up at lunch. Mackenzie then really warmed to his work to shoot three-under on the outward nine in the afternoon and gradually increased his lead to wrap it all up 5 and 4 at the 32nd hole. Harris had excelled to reach the decider for Sellar Trophy decider, knocking out Sam Forrester in the quarterfinals and Jeff Ogg in the semifinals. Hira Renata withstood a spirited fightback from Murray Wolland to win the intermediate title 2 and 1, and Innes Kennard secured a 4 and 2 win over Mike Dixon in the junior final.

CAMPBELL GOES LOW Hamish Campbell lowered his own course record en route to a decisive win in the annual Kina Open at Tasman. Tasman representative Campbell (Greenacres) crafted a five-under-par 63 in the first round, bettering by one the mark he set when winning the title last year. He followed it up with a 67 in the second round for a 130 total, securing his third successive Tasman Trophy title by four shots over clubmate Ryan Chisnall, who shot 69 and 65. Aaron Kotua (Waahi Taakaro) scored a two-round nett 126 to claim the Kina Cup while the women’s gross went to Emily Greenhough (Motueka) with a 36-hole total of 163.

GOLF TRAILS from Jim Cooke on 40. A medal competition the next day was won by Ken Eggers (Wairau Valley) with an impressive nett 65, while Chas Craig’s 75 was the best gross score and saw him take out the senior title. The intermediate gross went to Nick Thompson with an 84 while John O’Brien’s 91 gave him the junior honours. Nett competition winners were Williams Harrison (senior), Tony Yardley (intermediate) and Malcolm Aitken (junior). A highlight of the tournament was an ace at the par-three 13th hole by Brian Bartlett (Waikanae). He chose the wrong hole, though, with a new car up for grabs for anyone holing-in-one at the fifth.
VICTORY FOR JERRAM Peter Jerram reigned supreme when Wairau Valley members contested a stableford last month. Jerram emerged victorious on a countback from Frances Payne after both scored 42 points. Alf van der Huist was next best with 39, followed by Marion Flynn 38 and Colin Baker and Grant Flynn with 37 points.

RUSSLEY CELEBRATE A spirited fight back on the back nine by Waitikiri was not enough as Russley held on to win the Woodward Cup interclub final. Russley were looking comfortable at the halfway stage but had to hold their nerve before winning 3.5-2.5. They were up in three matches and square in another after nine hole at Waitikiri then weathered the host team’s rally, which was led by Ian Donaldson, who dusted off Mark O’Malley 7 and 6. Waitikiri greenkeeper Richard Belcher had an impressive birdie on the long parfour 18th to snatch a half while Chris Bond beat Regan Kilpatrick on the 18th. That left Waitikiri’s 16-year-old No 1 Jason Yoo needing to halve his match against fellow Canterbury representative Harry Bateman to force a playoff. Yoo strove mightily hard, coming back from three down with three to play to win the 16th and 17th holes and knocking his approach to the last to 15 feet. But Bateman responded, guiding his second to three feet and when Yoo missed his putt Bateman’s was conceded. Russley qualified for the playoff in fourth spot and advanced past the semifinals with a 3.5-2.5 win over Christchurch while Waitikiri took care of Templeton 5-1. The winning Russley team, pictured from back left, is Harry Bateman, Owen Burgess, Andrew Dufton, Mark O’Malley; front left, Michael McAuley, manager Murray Brown and Regan Kilpatrick.

PLAYOFF PRESSURE Coringa survived a playoff to win the women’s Pollock Cup final against Russley. The contested was locked at 2-2 when Russley put out their No 1 Elisha Crosbie for the playoff against Coringa No 4 Louise Gebbie. Gebbie had birdied the playoff hole, the 18th, in her earlier 2 and 1 win over Nicole Nathan, and she did it again by rolling in a downhill 15-footer to secure the title. Her relieved teammates were Kim Moggach, Fiona Gebbie and Melissa Newburn. Coringa, the most consistent team all season, had seen off Templeton 4-0 in the semifinals while Russley got through on a countback after ending 2-2 with Waimairi Beach.
EASY FOR GEBBIE Louise Gebbie distanced herself from her rivals to comfortably win the provincial women’s champion of champions title at Russley. Gebbie (Coringa) was the only competitor to break 80 in the 36-hole event and her rounds of 78 and 78 left her 10 shots clear of Kate Turner (Rawhiti). Clair Reid (Templeton) won the inaugural nine-hole champion of champions title, on a countback from Faye Sedgley (Harewood). Mary Samuela-Anderson (Scargill) narrowly won the best 36-hole nett trophy from Judy Smith (McLeans Island) while Russley won the gross stableford rosebowl district competition. The Russley team of June Park, Lesley Martin and Kyungwook Kim accumulated 97 gross stableford, just ahead of Christchurch on 96 in second on a countback from Templeton.
RECORD ATTEMPT Canterbury Golf will oversee a bid for a Guinness world record in February at Christchurch’s Hagley Park for the most people teeing off at one time. It marks the start of a “Hook into Golf” campaign from February 11 to March 17 designed to boost club membership. During that period district clubs will offer give-golf-a-go-days to the public. The target is to attract new and beginner golf-
ers, particularly families.

OTAGO/SOUTHLAND GOLF TRAIL ALMOST FOR BONIFACE Robyn Boniface fell one match short of contesting the Australian women’s senior amateur final in Canberra. The 56-year-old from the Invercargill Golf Club, who has won the New Zealand women’s senior championship for the past three consecutive years, was in line for a special double. But she was beaten by 2 and 1 by eventual champion Jacqui Morgan, the New South Wales fifth seed, in the semifinals of the championship. Morgan, from Monash Country Club in Sydney, went on to defeat seven-time champion Sylvia Donohoe (Narooma) 4 and 2 in the 18-hole final. Boniface finished as the leading qualifier after rounds of 75 and 80 at the Gungahlin Lakes Golf Club in Australia’s political capital for the four rounds of matchplay.
SOUTHLAND MAKE IT FOUR The Southland women extended their dominance of the national masters teams event to four years with another win, this time on home soil at Invercargill Golf Club. The combination of Robyn Boniface, Robyn Pullar, Kerry Mariu and Fiona Murray led from the first round and did not release their grip before emerging victorious in a district event contested in a gross stableford format. Southland completed the four rounds with 369 points, finishing 11 ahead of Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay, who performed with credit to claim second for the fourth successive year, after beginning the final round just one behind the leaders. The Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay team – featuring Janie Field, Vicky Turley, Lynne Roberts and Kathy Olsen – were a comfortable 26 points in front of third-placed Auckland, the 2008 champions who were well served by Brigit Holford, Ingrid Jagersma, Scarlett Jean and Shirlie Barbedes. The plaque for the leading individual player remained in Southland hands, transferring from four-time winner and captain Boniface to Pullar, who compiled 131 of her team’s points. “I never thought about (the individual title),’’ Pullar said after scoring 34, 37, 26 and 34 points over the four rounds. “I was there to play for the team and that’s just a bonus if the side comes through.’’ Winning at home was a special feeling. “This is really satisfying being at home. I’m really pleased to do it on my home course.’’
QUEENSTOWN TOO GOOD Queenstown ended St Clair’s dominance of the senior A interclub pennants with a spanking 5-1 win in the final at Cromwell. Otago No 1 Brent McEwan was the only St Clair player to post a win after giving Wakatipu schoolboy Samson Kim little chance by shooting a five-under-par 67 which, believe it or not, included an air shot. But the rest of the games went Queenstown’s way with schoolboys Chadol Han, Jamie Anstiss and Sungwoo Han all postings wins over their more experienced opponents. Chadol Han beat Tony Giles on the 17th, while Anstiss accounted for provincial Masters representative Stephen Hitchcox in 16 holes. Sungwoo Han edged out Greg Johnson on the final green while Queenstown almost completed the clean sweep with Simon Hollyer and Simon Boland winning convincingly. North Otago won the senior B final, beating a Balmacewen team with three wins and two halves. Intermediate honours went to Island Park with a convincing 5-1 win over an Arrowtown sextet. The junior A honours went to Maniototo, while Lawrence won the junior B title with a narrow win over Roxburgh.
CLASSIC 4BBB Joshua Graham and Blair Kinraid dovetailed nicely to win the St Classic 4BBB nett event last month. They two combined for a mighty score of 58 to pip the Mark Davis-Scott Waide and Murray Bruce-Sam Smith combinations by one shot. Craig Johnston and Jamie Mackay (Riversdale) were next on 61, alongside Mark O’Kane and John Thomson. The women’s honours fell to Janet Hobbs and Alison McBride (Taieri Lake) with a 65, ahead of Rose Callender and Sandra Newton (Island Park) on 67 and Judy Bevin and Susan Greig 69.
