uccess is very much a relative term in golf. For midweek hackers, playing more good shots than bad constitutes success; in some cases so much so that the round score itself is irrelevant. What’s the difference between 102 and 108 anyway? For club pennant players, success comes down to how full the trophy cabinet is at season’s end and how many ticks there are in the individual W column. For young touring professionals, success equates to simply surviving, paying the bills, taking care of any dependants and being able to see enough light at the end of the tunnel to believe that perseverance will bring with it some rewards. Then, there are those pros wanting only the opportunity to play on a consistent basis, to build solid pillars on which to construct a career. Into the latter category fall two New Zealand pros going places in 2013. More specifically, Mike Hendry is heading to the Japan Tour and Cathryn Bristow will set her stall out on the Ladies European Tour. For the first time in his career Hendry is

looking forward to playing a full schedule of events. Japanese tournaments, outings on the OneAsia and Australasian circuits plus the odd anticipated invite will see him contest 25 to 30 events this year. That’s more than double the playing workload he’s shouldered in past seasons. Hendry has done commendably well off a limited schedule but to take his game to the next level he needs to be playing regularly. Japan will allow him to do that. Similarly, fellow Aucklander Bristow has grafted hard for a status upgrade after spending the past three years battling to keep her head above water on the secondary Futures Tour in the United States. You don’t prosper on circuits such as that; they are learning grounds on which to develop your game, iron out any technical flaws, and build confidence. Unable to earn promotion to the LPGA Tour, where a very comfortable living can be

had for the better players, Bristow instead changed tack, targeted Europe and ground her way through two stages of qualifying to earn her tour card for 2013. Gaining entry to the ranks of a major tour is a success in itself. But it’s only the starting point. Now both Hendry and Bristow will want to make the most of their chances, in the full knowledge that tour membership is not guaranteed and that they must play well enough to retain their cards at season’s end. It’s something Danny Lee went through in 2012 when he earned $US359,112 in tournament income but still lost his PGA Tour card. He’s now preparing for another tilt on the second tier Web.com Tour from which he hopes to regain his full tour status for next year. He’s done it before, having graduated from the feeder tour in 2011. That’s the thing with the better players. Despite any setbacks, they do not lack determination and keep coming back for more.

Hendry welcomes increased workload By Martin Davidson

ike Hendry is buzzing at the prospect of being one very busy bee in 2013. The Aucklander is preparing for the fullest playing schedule of his career since turning professional in 2005. Having successfully negotiated his way through the qualifying process to earn his ticket on to the Japan Tour this year, Hendry will mix and match his schedule there with appearances on both the OneAsia and Australasian Tours. All up, and taking in some expected invites elsewhere, Hendry hopes to play as many as 25 to 30 tournaments, a significant jump on the 12-13 major tour events he has dieted on in past seasons. “It will be the first time I’ve been able to play a full season,’’ 33-year-old Hendry told Golfer Pacific NZ. With ranking points available in the vast majority of those tournaments, Hendry has his sights set on continuing his rise up the rankings. Despite a limit schedule, he ended 2012 at 271 in the world, having started the year at 517. Ultimately, he wants to push on to the top 100 – and even the top 50, which remains his distant goal. With the extra tournaments come extra stresses on his body. A latecomer to golf after showing considerable promise as a

cricketer, the broad shouldered Hendry remains naturally fit due to that background but he expects he will need to pay particular care to the physical side of his game. “I consider myself fairly young in golfing terms. I’ve only been out on tour for a few years and I am still pretty fit and healthy. I don’t see why I can’t continue to compete for another 10 to 15 years as long as I keep myself fit. “I will be putting more effort into it (conditioning). As you get older you do lose speed and strength and all that stuff. You need to keep on top of your fitness. “You just need to look at the likes of Vijay Singh who was able to compete so well through his 40s simply because he’s so dedicated to his fitness.” Despite the late start Hendry has managed his career superbly to date. He, of course, won the 2010 Indonesian Open on the OneAsia Tour while his victory in last year’s New Zealand PGA Championship in Queenstown was the perfect start to a season which netted him a succession of top10 results. He was fourth in the Perth International, sixth equal in the Australian Masters, seventh at the Nanshan International in China, tied for seventh in the Australian Open and 10th equal in the New Zealand Open. Also, he won some smaller events in Fiji and was third in the Victorian Open, meaning he can look back on a year where his consistency holds out the promise of bigger

and better things to come. “I had a lot of top 10s. I had some really solid events but I also had a disappointing period through the middle of the year. “From May to August I didn’t have a heavy schedule and when I did I played well because I was playing consistently day in day out. The bad results came when the schedule thinned out.’’ With that in mind Hendry will look at playing a domestic Charles Tour event this year if the timing it right before heading off to Japan for a run of events “just to get that match fitness up”. One of the lures of Japan is the carrot of world ranking points, which Hendry wants to accumulate to the stage where invitations come in for him to play bigger events elsewhere. “I just thought it was the right place to go and it was the next step in terms of getting myself ultimately to where I want to be, which is America.’’ Changes to US qualifying school regulations are to make it harder to get on to the PGA Tour. ate on to PGA Tour where previously the top 25 advanced, and the same number gained access through qualifying school. Future qualifying will be for Web.com Tour status only. “I want to get my world ranking to the point where I get through on to the PGA Tour without having to first move there. “To play the Web.com Tour for a year you’d have to take a pay cut and consider moving there for the entire season.’’ But for now, thoughts of the US can remain on the back burner. Japan now occupies his attention, although he will not set sail for there until April. He is buoyed by the feedback he has received from his playing colleagues, who consider Hendry has to game to flourish in Japan. “The exciting this is that I’ve heard from my peers that they believe I will do well, that the golf courses are suited to my game.’’ It all leaves Hendry in an expectant mood as he eyes next month’s New Zealand PGA Championship at The Hills where he is excited to return as the defending champion. “It will be great to have the opportunity to defend the title. I always enjoy my time in Queenstown and I always enjoy the golf course. “It would be nice to play well and get the season off to a good start like I did last year.’’

ay of Plenty had no shortage of heroes as they reasserted their authority to win the national men’s interprovincial teams championship at Balmacewen in Dunedin. Bay of Plenty continued their remarkable record to collect the silverware for the seventh time in 11 years. It was not a time for the faint hearted as they survived two playoffs on a tense final day before leaving the Otago Golf Club having extended a record envied by their rivals. But Bay of Plenty stood firm when the pressure was at its greatest as firstly Peter Lee then Victor Janin won playoffs. Lee, who ended the week unbeaten and was named player of the tournament, answered the call in the semifinal against 2011 champions Southland that had ended 2.5-2.5 after regulation. The 2012 New Zealand amateur championship beaten finalist, Lee had halved his match with Scott Hellier and these two returned to action for the playoff, which Lee won with a 20-foot birdie putt at the first extra hole. Lightning then struck twice for Bay of Plenty when the final against ManawatuWanganui also ended in a 2.5-2.5 deadlock, leaving Janin and his No 4 rival Junior Tatana to scrap it out. These two halved the first hole with pars before Janin knocked his approach at the second to five feet of the stick. Tatana’s chip shot finished 12 feet short of the hole and when he missed his par attempt Janin made his birdie putt to win the title. “It is absolutely unbelievable,” Bay of Plenty team manager Aaron Walsh said. “We talked about being brave and showing courage all week. Those were the two key words and Victor showed that for us when it mattered most in the final. It is phenomenal to be standing here as champions after a really great match with Manawatu-

I am just so proud of our boys.” It could have been so different for Manawatu-Wanganui, looking to win the title for the first time since 1964. They had a chance to win the tournament in regulation. Tatana was 1 up heading down the final hole and made a costly double bogey to halve his match with Janin. “That was the most nervous I have ever been playing golf,” 21-year-old Janin said about his four-foot bogey putt to keep his team alive. “I could feel my knees shaking. To see that go in was huge relief and then to go on and win in the playoff was a huge moment – the best moment of my golf career without a doubt.” The team’s victory capped a magnificent week for Lee.

“It is a huge honour to claim that award (player of tournament) with the great players that are here,” the 18-year-old said. “It was never my goal at the start of the week but to win that is special. I just wanted to win as many times as I could for the Bay team and in the end I had a great week.’’

Bristow earns LET card

whole continent of opportunity has opened up for Auckland lefthander Cathryn Bristow, who has earned her playing card on the Ladies European Tour this year. Bristow, who has spent the past three years scraping out a living on the second tier Futures Tour in the United States, can pack her bags after surviving the final stage of the tour’s qualifying school in Morocco last month. The 28-year-old finished 25th equal to join the top 30 and ties who gained a full card for the 2013 season. Bristow will be the second New Zealander on the circuit, joining Wellington veteran Lynn Brooky, who continues to play a limited schedule in Europe. “It is very important to be able to play on one of the main tours,’’ Bristow said. “I will play great courses, against some of the best players in the world, and getting on the tour is another step in the right direction for my career. “I have worked very hard and it’s nice to see the work pay off in this way. I’m excited.” She has been based in the United States

since undertaking as scholarship at the University of Oregon where she graduated in 2009 with a degree in psychology. She has won once on the Futures Tour, at the 2011 Pennsylvania Classic. Bristow finished this year’s Futures programme ranked 59th on the tour after one top-10 result in 15 tournaments. She plans to play as many events as possible, although she is still to confirm her schedule. One tournament pencilled into her calendar, though, is the New Zealand Women’s Open at Clearwater in Christchurch on February 8-10, an event co-sanctioned by the European and Australian tours. Bristow was the only New Zealander – male or female – to progress through Qschool in Europe or the United States last year.

Dryland aces it for Auckland

rittney Dryland emerged the heroine as Auckland defended the national women’s teams interprovincial crown in Dunedin. She survived the week at St Clair with an unblemished record and delivered the coup de grace under immense pressure in the final against Wellington before Auckland won a gripping affair 3-2. The Auckland No 4 stood on the tee at the par-three 145m 13th hole all square in her contest with the well performed Lucy Davis with Wellington seemingly in charge and poised the win the title for the first time in 20 years. That was until Dryland delivered the shot of the championship – a four-iron for a hole-in-one – to swing the match and take a 1 up lead over her Davis that she held until the end. After witnessing the ace from the adjacent hole her team-mate Joanna Kim made a great putt for eagle and the championship match was well and truly back in Auckland’s favour. There were plenty of swing in momentum coming home but Dryland’s ace was a moment that halted Wellington’s progress and got Auckland back into the match. “I had a five iron and Kaye (Carroll) our manager came over and told me to take one more club so I did,” Dryland said, surrounded by her jubilant teammates. “I knew it was a good shot so I picked

up my tee and I didn’t know it went in but everyone started screaming. It was great. It gave us that bit of confidence that we needed to keep in the match and keep fighting.” Auckland captain Larissa Eruera, who delivered an important half against Alanah Braybrook, said the hole-in-one was heard by her team around the course. “I didn’t see it but I heard it and I was celebrating. And then hearing that Joanna eagled the hole before was amazing. It gave me a bit of a pick-up. It gave us the momentum that we needed.” Carroll said the come-from-behind win ranked among the provinces’ finest. “That has to be the tensest final I have ever seen,” she said. “They deserve this win. They have worked so hard. The Keh sisters (Wenyung and Munchin) practice 30 hours a week each and you can tell. The turnaround from that shot [one in hole] was dramatic. It wasn’t looking too good there for a while.’’ But heading down the last the title was still there for the taking. Wellington No 1 Julianne Alvarez showed her class with a 4 and 3 win over Wenyung Keh and Auckland’s Joanna Kim levelled the ledger by defeating Barbara Pereno 5 and 4. Wellington’s Braybrook had a golden chance to get the second point on the board in her match with Eruera. She was 1 up walking down the 18th and had a three-

foot putt to win but it slid by the hole and Eruera putted in from two feet for the half. The battle between Dryland and Davis proved decisive. Irwin booked for The Hills

hree-time US Open winner and World Golf Hall of Fame member Hale Irwin has been confirmed to play in the New Zealand PGA Championship starting at the Hills near Queenstown on February 28. With a career spanning more than four decades and featuring wins in three majors, 20 PGA Tour and 45 Champions Tour events, the American is sure to be a major drawcard. Since turning 65 in 2010, Irwin has shot his age or better on seven occasions in Champions Tour events. He will be joined at the championship by his son Steve, who qualified for the 2011 US Open at the Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland. “I cherish the opportunity to come to New Zealand to play in the NZ PGA Championship. To travel with my son Steve, play golf in Queenstown and then sample some of your renowned fishing and hospitality is too good to miss. I am really looking forward to it”, he said. One man who knows Irwin well and has played alongside him many times is Sir Bob Charles, who is looking forward to joining Hale on the fairways once again. “Hale is a fantastic player and I’ve had the pleasure of walking the fairways of some of the world’s greatest courses with Hale over the years, so I can’t wait

Omaha Ascension Pro Am

he Omaha Beach Golf Club Pro Am is a major Professional Golf Tournament on the New Zealand PGA Circuit. It attracts many of the country’s top professional golfers and the list of winners includes Kiwis, Stephen Alker, Richard Lee, Grant Moorhead, Tony Christie and one of Australia’s top touring professionals Peter Fowler. Total prize money for the Pro Am in 2012 was $22,500 attracting the country’s top golfers. This PGA sanctioned event is now in its fourteenth year and attracts a full field every year with a large waiting list of players wishing to enter this popular tournament. The tournament has also attracted total support from the PGA and in recognition to the high rating that Omaha has now achieved the final qualifying round for entry to the $500,000 Hills Tournament will be held at Omaha on the Monday 25th February immediately after our Pro Am. The future of Golf

ast week I saw the future of golf. I was teaching at an intermediate school in Dunedin for four days and taught over 600 kids. Teaching golf in schools was something I used to dread with all the rules, regulations, safety and then trying to ensure that the kids had fun; it was basically mission impossible. Thanks to SNAG Golf with the tennis ball-sized golf balls and plastic oversized clubheads, the kids were able to get into playing golf around the school field quickly and easily. My daughter cringed when she heard I would be teaching at her school as she thought I would probably embarrass her. I came close to the latter but one of her friends did tell me that their classmates were excited to have another session of SNAG Golf. A teacher told me how she overheard one of the students comment “thank goodness we didn’t have to spend time standing around learning how to grip the club and swing this way. We just got to start playing and it was really fun!” Now the next question you will be asking is: how does that happen? How can I give brief instructions and send the kids

At Chisholm Park, we have now set up a nine-hole SNAG Golf course every Sunday afternoon. Here we encourage families to come and “give it go”. It is a new concept and the testing we have done so far, shows that non-golfers are enjoying it as well. Seeing our older members bring their grandchildren to come to play SNAG with them is a “win” in introducing the next generation to our golf course. Golf clubs are always looking for new players but the formula used in the past to attract new players is failing. Having introduced SNAG Golf at Chisholm Park and the local schools, I have seen the confidence of the new players grow dramatically. No longer do I get “I can’t play golf” but rather “wow, that was so fun! Can we do it again?” I believe that SNAG Golf is the future of golf instruction and is the progressive step in introducing the motor skills that the golf swing requires. I have introduced SNAG Golf to over 700 participants under the age of 14, and have had a 100 percent participation rate. Both the teachers and the students have really enjoyed the sessions.

he Scottish origins of our game are well known to all golfers, but the role of the Scots and their early professionals in spreading the game around the world has probably not received due recognition. In the 1880s and 1890s, there was an exodus of many Scottish professional golfers and clubmakers to all parts of the globe, driven no doubt by the promise of better wages and conditions, and in some cases by health reasons and the search for a better climate. Australia and New Zealand were no exceptions, as reflected in the founding fathers of the PGAs of both countries. The first president of the PGA of New Zealand, Fred Hood, came from St Andrews in 1902 and was the first employed professional in the North Island, at the Auckland (now Royal Auckland) Golf Club, where he was also involved in the design of the Middlemore course. In those days professionals had to travel widely to make a living from playing, course architecture, coaching and the making and selling of clubs. This included travel to Australia, where Fred played in the final of the 1906 Australian Professional Championship at Rose Bay (now Royal Sydney) against another Scotsman, Dan Soutar, from Carnoustie.

Back in the day... After 18 holes Fred was three up, but either lunch didn’t agree with him or Dan found another gear in the afternoon as Soutar went on to win 5 and 3. Dan Soutar won four Australian PGAs in all and was one of the 15 professionals who founded the PGA of Australia in 1911. His golf DNA lives on through his great nephew Geoff Smart, the current president of the PGA of New Zealand. Back in New Zealand, Fred Hood continued his travels, designing the Hamilton Golf Club (naturally known as St Andrews), running a golf school in Wellington and a busy golf club manufacturing business. These clubs are still keenly sought after today by collectors. He spent six weeks at Christchurch Golf Club as their first professional, eventually finishing up at Miramar in the early 1920s.

In 1926 he was still competing in professional tournaments, finishing second equal in the handicap strokeplay at the Otago Golf Club (Fred’s handicap being plus one). The winner of that tournament was J A (Joe) Clements, a three-time winner of the NZ Golf Association Professional Championship in 1908, 1909 and 1911. Hood was also a two-time Professional Champion in 1903 and 1906, although he had only one opponent on the second occasion. The Professional Championship eventually became the NZ PGA Championship in 1920, playing for a cup donated by a Mr W H McDougall. The Dunedin event was played under trying conditions, with a strong, hot wind whipping over the Balmacewen links. Ties, jerseys and thick tweed plus fours – the traditional garb of the day – would not have helped player comfort.

Tragically Fred was to succumb a few months later to weather of a different kind, after playing golf in the rain while suffering from a heavy cold. He contracted pneumonia and never recovered, dying at the age of 46 as New Zealand’s oldest and longest serving golf professional at the time. He left a widow and three children, and his fellow professionals took up a collection to fund a plaque for his grave. The New Zealand PGA “family” at that time consisted of fewer than 20 professionals, and next month we will follow their progress through the 1920s and 1930s.

In those days professionals had to travel widely to make a living from playing, course architecture, coaching and the making and selling of clubs...

The defending champions began the event with a total of 301 from the best four scores at the Discovery Bay Golf Club and that was to prove the final and winning. The scheduled 54-hole event was reduced to one round due to rain and fog which made for almost zero visibility. New Zealand managed 304 to again finish runner-up to the Australians, who continued their fine record in the event by winning the title for the third consecutive year. Denis Dale, who won the individual competition and the title of Asia Pacific senior amateur champion, led the way for Australia for their three-stroke victory. He opened with a one-over-par 73, good enough to win the title by one shot from New Zealander Frank Borren and Hong

Kong’s William Cheung.

Busy time across the Tasman

ew Zealand’s leading amateurs face a busy period across the Tasman this month. Two squads have been named for a number of fixtures in

Australia. The men’s squad includes Tyler Hodge (Levin), Blair Riordan (Takaka), Josh Munn (Manawatu) and Vaughan McCall (Gore). Those players will compete in three events – the Australian Master of the Amateurs on January 8-11, the Australian amateur championships on January 15-20 and the Lake Macquarie amateur on January 24-27. The three women who will compete in the Lake Macquarie Cup on January 8-11 are Julianne Alvarez (Manor Park), Sarah Bradley (Cambridge) and Munchin Keh (Titirangi). They will all stay on to compete in the Australian amateur where world No 1 Lydia Ko will join them and look to defend her title at the Commonwealth and Woodlands Golf Clubs in Melbourne. The squad namings marked a changing of the guard as a number of leading players have left the amateur ranks in recent times. New Zealand Golf high performance manager Gregg Thorpe welcomes the introduction of some of the younger talent to the senior ranks and has an eye on these players

for the future. “As is often the case at the conclusion of an Eisenhower and Espirito Santo year a number of players make the transition to the professional ranks,” Thorpe said. “This year is no different with the likes of Emily Perry, Ben Campbell, Mat Perry, Dan Pearce and Fraser Wilkin all making the switch. “The very nature of a player development pathway is that players continue to progress and move on from amateur golf, now it’s the turn of a new group to step up, it’s an exciting time for these players.” Also, McCall, Hodge, Riordan and Munn have been chosen for the inaugural Ten Nations Cup in George, South Africa, on February 6-9. The event is an expanded version of the Four Nations Cup, which New Zealand hosted last year. It is now played over four rounds of strokeplay between 10 countries, with confirmed entries at this stage from South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, England, Scotland and Ireland. The four New Zealanders will also stay on to compete in the South African strokeplay championship on February 12-15.

Play Hawke’s Bay Golf region this summer

awke’s Bay is like most regions throughout New Zealand regarding the downturn in club membership. It appears the region’s membership may be down by as much as five percent in 2013. However, on the positive side a number of golf clubs have put in place some membership drive initiatives and from reports to Golf Hawke’s Bay at least three clubs have already reported a positive response to their initiatives with new members joining.

Golf Hawkes Bay is to shortly announce a new junior golf development manager to take over from Jasmine Wilson. The organisation, along with the new development manager, plans a slightly different approach to the junior coaching programme during 2013. Although it will still be targeting the youngsters at primary schools, an emphasis will also be placed on identifying those keen to take up the game at intermediate and secondary school level. This will hopefully lead to more juniors joining golf clubs throughout Hawke’s Bay. There are also plans for Golf Hawke’s Bay to work more closely with clubs that are nearest to the schools. Both of the province’s men’s and women’s Toro interprovincial representative teams featured a number of teenagers in 2012.

This wonderful 368 metre par four hole dog-legs to the right enticing players to hit across the corner. However don’t be tempted to cut too much off the corner as trees and heavy rough lie in wait. Ideally, a tee shot up the left half of the fairway opens up the green nicely. Your approach must be kept short of

the hole and will feed in from the right side. When on the green, your work is only half done as the green slopes from back to front and contains some testing undulations. Most players are satisfied with two putts on this challenging green.

2013 HASTINGS OPEN

There was a 14-year-old in the men’s team and a 15-year-old in the women’s team. Both of the youngsters forced their way into the elite teams by consistently performing at a top level. For any golfer visiting Hawke’s Bay there are some wonderful 18-hole and nine-hole golf courses to play.

Tourism Hawke’s Bay has produced an excellent map of where all the golf courses are situated throughout the region and a copy of the map should be available at motels and information centres throughout the region. It is nearly always possible to get a game on the golf course of your choice year round and don’t forget the weather is great in sunny Hawke’s Bay.

The fairway has trees on both sides, which protect out of bounds on the far right and a hazard on the left. Shots to the left hand side don’t get a shot at the green as this is blocked by mature pine trees.

Having placed your 220m-plus drive on the right-hand side of the fairway you have a daunting approach shot over a rock-surrounded pond to a two-tiered green. If the pin is on the top level the landing area is small. Here you will be faced with the decision whether to aim for the top and risk an overshot of play to the lower area and guarantee a difficult two putt. Either way, it’s one heck of a hole!

However, the second shot needs to be accurate and the large bunkers and undulating fairways taken into account. for the third shot is also important if the heavily bunkered green is to be safely reached. Anything wayward will result in a scramble to make par or worse. Add in the effect of the in-your-face prevailing winds and everything just gets a whole lot harder. A tricky two-tiered sloping green rounds out the hole and hopefully a par or better is achieved. Or as one member suggests – you can smash it 290, follow it up with a lazy six iron on to the green and you’re up for an eagle or at worst an easy birdie. But that’s another story!

Into the prevailing westerly wind, from either of the elevated teeing grounds, and over the large lake that ends near a bunker tucked into the left front of the crescent-shaped green. THE signature hole on Rotorua’s Arikikapakapa course is undoubtedly the parthree 14th. This hole is extremely picturesque and can play as difficult as it is beautiful. From the elevated tee you need to hit across a thermal lake to a generous green, however it is virtually all carry and

plays its full distance, particularly if you’re playing into any sort of breeze. Any errant shot right of the green will bring big trouble, so it’s best to favour the left side of the green. It is certainly a memorable hole and to make par or better is very satisfying.

The third hole, known as ‘The Ridge’, is a famous hole in New Zealand golf. From the tee there is a minimum carry of 125 metres for women and 142 metres for men to clear the bank and reach the fairway. The longer hitters need to keep the ball in the narrow neck between the poplar

trees that flank the fairway. The yardage to the pin is import to gauge correctly as the dead ground in front of the pin deceives most players. The second shot can be very difficult because of the poplar trees and the steep drops on either side of the fairway.

THIS feature hole is a relatively easy parfive when playing with a southerly breeze but can be a monster during a strong north westerly. Out of bounds down the right side and evenly spread pot bunkers running down the left side of the fairway stiffen the test. The well bunkered green has a double bunker on the right in front of the

green with the second bunker hidden from view from the fairway. The green can be a difficult to hold approach shots down wind and with a narrow entrance into a long two tiered green there is little room for error. Watch putting down wind and down hill.

THIS hole is named after the large native Cabbage tree that sits on the edge of the fairway some 255 metres from the championship tee and 207 metres to the green. The Cabbage Tree is also the centrepiece of the club’s logo. For the big drivers, the aim is to clear the tree. For all others it is to leave yourself with a second shot that will negotiate the tree and open up the

green. At the tree the fairway and airspace around the tree is only 12 metres wide. You can pass by down the left side but in doing so you are generally playing from the rough. For most, having cleared the Cabbage tree, you are looking at a possible birdie. Miss and it’s more likely to be a bogey. A great little hole.

AT the first tee, mountain views stretch to the horizon, a shimmering lake mesmerises and lush fairways beckon. Winner of the World Travel Awards 2010 as New Zealand’s leading golf resort, Terrace Downs offers a par-72, 18hole championship golf course. Nestled in the foothills of the Southern Alps, there are very few scenic alpine courses like it. The 16th hole is one of the most exhilarating holes on the course. It is 130 metres from the back tees, but it’s not the length of this hole that stops you in your tracks, it’s the altitude. The tee box sits close to the edge of the

gorge and about 200 metres above the aquacoloured Rakaia River that tumbles along below. The 16th hole is just a wedge or so away, but you will have to carry two ravines that drop all the way to the river through thick native bush. Your tee shot also has to carry a deep pot bunker short of the green and skirt another bunker on the left. It is hard picking a hole to stand out as a mere mortal on comparison to the rest which are lying across the most tranquil of locations.

The 11th hole on Otago Golf Club’s Balmacewen course is known as The Glen and is the signature hole of the course. It regularly pops up on best holes in New Zealand lists and has even been mentioned on a few overseas lists. It is not a hole at 316 metres, but accuracy off the elevated tee is paramount and again it is important to be accurate with the approach shot as the green, though 40 metres long, is thin and slopes away from the fairway. Also two large bunkers

guard each side of the green. The correct club selection will aid any birdie opportunity. In 1966, when this was the ninth hole it measure 370 metres from the championship tees. Arnold Palmer drove the green while playing an exhibition match with Sir Bob Charles and then two-putted for a birdie. It is a unique and beautiful hole, a great sight from the tee with lovely native bush on both sides of the fairway.

The majestic resort course was at its glorious best with the sun shining throughout the day, accompanied by just a faint breeze to keep the players cool. Sam Klippel, Mike Tolhurst, Trevor Martin and Terry Randell won the chance to contest the GHSGC Championship after they successfully progressed through the top-16 playoff at Gulf Harbour. Along with the finalists, four fellow GHSGC members, Beverly McAlpine, Simon Klippel, Denise Baker and Allen Cumming, also won the chance to play Kauri Cliffs by way of a random draw. Sam Klippel was the bookies favourite after he convincingly won the GHSGC playoff with a two-over-par 74 at Gulf Harbour for 44 stableford points, including his first hole-in-one on the par-three 13th hole. Scott Wilson was rewarded for his solid play when winning the Northland men’s champion of champions senior title at Whangaroa. A 36-hole total of 144 was good enough for Wilson (Bay of Islands Kerikeri) to collect the spoils, three shots ahead of Luke Brown (The Pines). Brad Bonnington (Wellsford) and Bob Shirley (Carrington) tied for third on 149, one shot ahead of Chris Truscott (Waitangi). The intermediate title was easily won by Peter McTaggart (Whangarei), whose two-round 156 earned him an eight-shot cushion on Gary Webb (Sherwood Park), while Les Harvey (Wellsford) was next on 165, ahead of Peter Thorne (The Pines) and Boon Nook Ha (Bay of Islands Kerikeri) on 168.

Pam Hunter emerged victorious when the Bay of Islands Kerikeri women enjoyed an Xmas Cheer stableford. Hunter accumulated 40 points to pip Yu Rim Ha on a countback, while Margaret Chambers nabbed third place with 37, also on a countback from Carol Garland (Waitangi). Maritha O’Leary, Carolyn Price, Kath Gibson, Angela Coen and Bertha Leslie all managed 36 points. The men’s competition unfolded in similar fashion, with Brian Coen’s 40 points earning him the win on a countback from Bruce MacGregor. Robert Wolff was third with 39, ahead of Michael Perrin, Murray Anderson, David Cheesman, Maurice Penney and John Stratford with 38.

VICTORY FOR MERRICK John Merrick topped the charts when the Mangawhai men staged a Closing Day international stableford. He won with a haul of 20 points to edge out Paul Alexander on a countback, one point ahead of the third placed Paul Goodin. Peter Bridge was next with 18, followed by Ian Dunlop, Ray McIntyre and Geoff Finlay with 16, while Don McLean, George Gardiner and Jason Archibald managed 13.

BILLINGTON THE BEST Kevin Billington led the gross returns when Sherwood Park staged a Pak ‘n Save tournament last month. He was in top touch to craft a round of 68 to finish two shots ahead of Lyn Tugaga. Gavin Ashwell (Wellsford) and Shaun O’Shea posted 72s, while 73s were returned by David Alison and Bill Williams. The stableford scoring was healthy, with Merv Sim winning with his 44 points on a countback from Gordon Stanning and John Gunson (Waiotira). Vincent Dempster and Keith Davidson (Northern Wairoa) scored 43, and Brett Sawyers, Terry Powell and Bill Williams had 42. The women’s gross was won by Shanice Bowmar with her 79, while Lesley Ridgley took out the stablefords with 41 points on a countback from Mary Jack. 

NORTH HARBOUR GOLF TRAIL MUST MAKES THE MOST OF IT Australian Katelyn Must marked her first outing in New Zealand in the paid ranks by winning the Anita Boon Pro-Am at North Shore. Must prevailed after shooting rounds of 78 and 73 to edge Sarah Nicholson into second place. Caroline Bon was third on 152, two shots ahead of Vicky Thomas and Marnie McGuire. The round one ‘all women’ pro-am was won by Susan Farron’s team of young juniors Brooke Hamilton and Shantael Ligaliga and New Zealand Golf’s former board member Susie Simcock. The round two ‘mixed’ pro-am event was won by Emily Perry’s team of Pip Dunphy, Mi Hyeon Shin and Aontach Breatnach.

The North Harbour masters team finished a creditable sixth in their national event at Maraenui in Napier. It marked significant improvement for Mike Leeper (Omaha), Phil Mosley (Muriwai), Reg Fleet (Gulf Harbour), Mark Dawson (Pupuke), Rob Noffke (Muriwai) and Dave Izzard (Muriwai) after North Harbour managed 13th place 12 months earlier. LAM CLEANS UP Julita Lam was a comfortable winner of the North Harbour women’s champion of champions silver division title at RNZAF Golf Club. Lam, who plays out of both Muriwai and North Shore, was barely challenged after she put together rounds of 75 and 73 for a 148 total. That left her six shots clear of the second placed Elaine Jordan (Whangaparaoa), who managed 76 and 78. Third place on 160 went to Annette Muir (Waitemata). The bronze division was won by Teresa Tan (North Shore) with a 36-hole total of 176, three strokes in front of Georgie Sorokin (Peninsula). Lam also celebrated victory in the Rosebowl competition, contributing 63 stablefords over two rounds to North Shore’s winning total of 139. Her teammates were Tan and Judy Oh. PENINSULA CLEAN SWEEP Peninsula combinations dominated when the North Harbour 36-hole mixed foursomes titles were contested by 43 pairs at Peninsula. The host club provided all the major winners, with Dayna McCormick and Grant Fairweather triumphing overall with their 151 total. Faye and Steve Nickson were second on 154, while the nett winners on 130 were Meralyn Radonich and Paul Tahiwi, with Katie Pryce-Jones and Sam Reese were the runners-up.

SHAW THING AT WAITEMATA Matthew Shaw showed his mettle through two rounds of the Laing Memorial Trophy nett medal competition at Waitemata. Shaw put together rounds of 66 and 65 for a 131 total, leaving him just ahead of Mike Kearney after the latter shot 65 and 67. Dave Lane and Paul Toohey tallied 134 after managing 69/65 and 66/68 respectively, while Warren Raynel, David Douglas, Allan Eriksen and Quinn Harris were all on 135. 

Whitford Park won the Roy Pye Cup interclub event contested at Akarana. The team of Jeff Kim, Wesley Jeon, Kunaal Singh, Raysen Jiang and Kieran Brook combined for a winning gross tally of 595 over two rounds. With the best four of five scores counting in each round, Whitford Park headed second placed Titirangi by eight shots. The Titirangi team contained Brian Joe, Johnny Tynan, Fiontann Lawlor, Ryan Trainor and Ryan Steven. Third place on 609 went to the Maungakiekie team of Josh Leitch, Tom Parker, Ben Kendall, Campbell Rainsford and Matt Tiplady. George Helsby (Royal Auckland) had the best 36-hole gross of 144 while Chris De Bruyn (Remuera) had the best 36-hole nett of 138.

The nine-hole strokeplay championship was won by Mary Cole (Titirangi), with Pam Upchurch (Maungakiekie) second. The nett honours went to Sheryl Gow (Howick). The Titirangi combination of Keh, Hitchcock and Carmen Strang won the Rosebowl gross stableford ahead of Maungakiekie’s Kimberley McPhatter, Lisa Hong and Linda Nham.

HOT SCORING AT THE PARK Masame Segi had to be on top of his game on a day of hot scoring when the Mick Brown Trophy nett medal was contested at Chamberlain Park. Fourteen players posted sub-70 scores, with Segi the best of them with his very impressive 60.

Tai Wilson was also in top touch for his 61 while Sofeni Faifua and Sikaipa Ofisa posted 63s. David Lamositele, Lene Mauala and Jehan Dharmartne had 65s, Kele Tovia 66 and Ian Cooke and Stephen Ross posted 67s.

GOOD CITIZENS Alan Clark and Doug Harper worked together well to win the Citizen Classic combined stableford at Pukekohe. Clark and Harper tallied 81 points to win the day, ahead of Brian Bell and Dennise Biddick with 79. Nancy and Roger Cornish were third with 78 points, ahead of Laura and Ron Pryor (Onewhero) and John Mohn and Raewyn MacMahon (Ngahinapouri), both with 76. Terry Broughton and Martin Harvey (Waiterimu) were sixth with 75 points, one in front of Ian Todd and Murray Glasgow (Whitford Park) and Neil Grant and Brian Sutherland.

HOT FORM AT HOWICK The scoring was scorching hot when Howick held their Hamper Day stableford last month. Division one was taken out by Mark Cook, whose 42 points saw him edge out John Rickerby on a countback, with Steve Kelley third thanks to his 41. David Philippe topped division two with 46 points, three in front of Ian Parkinson, while Lauris Roberts led the way in division three, a return of 48 points seeing her hold on by one of Sharon Dowsett. 

WAIKATO GOLF TRAIL GOLDFINCH THE MASTER AT Whangamata Very difficult weather conditions greeted a field of 112 players from 31 clubs who contested the Whangamata Masters tournament. Blustery winds tested kept everyone honest with no one managing to beat the par of 70 over the three days. Aucklander Glen Goldfinch (The Grange) led from the start of day one and was never headed to take away the honours for the best 54-hole gross of 217, followed by Stewart Stephen (Whakatane) on 221 and Dave Cooke (Tauranga) on 222.

Titoki greenkeeper Terry Heaney made the most of his local knowledge to take out the best nett competition, and Neville Konz (The Grange) took out the best stableford competition. Local players who made it on to the prizewinners’ list included Bill Marshal and Geoff Tempest, who each won their division, and Guy McDonald, Bryan Moore, Brian Pittams, Frank O’Neil, Peter Williams and Ross Dingle, who took out the minor placings in various divisions. A well-attended prizegiving ceremony was staged when sponsors and local businesses combined with the Whangamata Golf Club to build a prizelist worth in excess of $15,000. GOLF TRAILS champions. The men’s event on the same day at Te Awamutu saw Justin Morris (Putaruru) take first spot in the senior division. Tony Stowers (Te Aroha) won the intermediate title and joint winners in the junior division were Kane Doherty (Ngaruawahia) and Brad Mitchell (Tahuna).

XMAS PRESENT FOR CHIBNALL

Karen Chibnall received an early Xmas present when topping the stablefords in the Hamilton women’s Christmas tournament. Chibnall totalled 45 points in a polished performance, giving her a two-point buffer on Janet Safe (Horsham Downs), with Esther Kelly third with 42 on a countback from Elaine Troutbeck (Stewart Alexander). Keum Kim, Ali Paterson (Lochiel) and Jenny Potter all scored 40 points. Chibnall also led the way in the nett medal, her 63 leaving her ahead of Safe on 65 and Troutbeck on 66. The gross honours went to Fai Tongdethsri, who shot 75 to see off the next best Kim on 80.

GOOD OLD NORM

Norm McIntosh made his visit worthwhile when leading the stableford returns in the RSA Open held at Ngaruawahia. McIntosh (Hukanui) could not be bettered, his 45 points proving too much for the field. Gary Kite was his nearest challenger with 42, while Te Orangi Thompson posted 41 points and Brian Thomson, Bernard Trumper and Michael Rutledge all scored 40. McIntosh not surprisingly prospered in the nett count as well, his 63 leading the way ahead of Kite’s 65 and 68s from Trumper, Rutledge and Thomson. Robert McLeod had the best gross score of 73, ahead of Rodney Jackson (Lochiel) with a 76. KELLY CROWNED

Dan Kelly had breathing space atop the stableford and nett medal scoreboards when Waihi held an Xmas Open tournament last month. Kelly won both with room to spare, a haul of 45 stableford points leaving him four clear of a trio containing Stephen Cutfield, Lawrence King (Paeroa) and Darryl Warren (Pukekohe). Gilbert Wellington also did well for his 40 points, followed one back by Julian McMath and Greg Bundle. Kelly cleaned up in the nett, too, shooting 63 to earn a four-shot win over Cutfield, King and Warren. The best gross scores of matching 77s were returned by Alistair Cochrane and Andy Roche. The women’s stableford was won with 42 points by Jenny O’Dwyer, ahead of Susan Mustard and Robyn Metcalf with 40. O’Dwyer won the nett as well with a 66, two shots better than Mustard and Metcalf.

LUCAS LAPS IT UP

Kane Lucas tasted success in the Thames Maori Open last month. Lucas (Te Aroha) produced the best gross score of the day, with his 70 allowing him to hold off Aaron Lister (Tirau) and Steve Gooder by one stroke. John Murray (Paeroa) was fourth with

Ian Fielder topped the stableford with a head-turning 48 points, three ahead of Tony Cathcart, with Leslie Wairepo third with 44. Fielder’s sure touch translated into a winning nett score of 58, three better than Cathcart. Lise Lister (Tirau) took out the women’s stableford with 41 points on a countback from Maree Whiteman (Ngahinapouri), while these two topped the netts with 67, and Whiteman held sway off the stick with a gross 75. 

BAY OF PLENTY GOLF TRAIL RANGIHIKA RULES

Jordan Rangihika made the most of his local knowledge to win the Bay of Plenty champion of champions senior title on his home course at Kawerau. Rangihika carded rounds of 71 and 75 for a 36-hole total of 146, leaving him two shots clear of Tony Cross (Springfield). Cross also opened with a 71 before struggling on the second 18 but still finished two ahead of the third placed Tom Slaven (Taupo). Andrew Brown (Te Puke) and Hayden O’Donnell (Tauranga) tied for fourth on 151, with Luke Robinson (Te Teko) next on 152. Andrew Wiggens (Omanu) won the intermediate title with a 154 total, four ahead of Peter Lawrence (Kawerau) and 12 clear of Alex Lamberton (Springfield) in third place. The junior title went to Alro Cloete (Omanu), ahead of Trevor Kearney (Rotorua) and Alby Oates (Kawerau). Kawerau took out the team prize for combined scores with a total of 481, seeing off Taupo (494) and Te Puke (496) for the honours.

KINGI CROWNED

Tyla Kingi put together matching rounds of 77 to win the Bay of Plenty women’s champion of champions silver gross division at Tauranga. Her 36-hole tally of 154 saw Kingi retain the title she won last year. Alanna Campbell (Omanu) was second with a 161 card, while the nett honours went to Julie Gee (Whangamata) with a 142 total. Gee was in the Whangamata team which won the Rosebowl combined gross stableford. She and Jacquie Hollard and Judy Crawford tallied 121 points. The bronze gross winner was Mavis Bruce (Waihi) ahead of Crawford. Bruce also took out the nett prize as well as the Una Wickham Trophy for a combined nett return of 290 with Carol Leary.

O’CONNOR DOES ENOUGH

Terry O’Connor picked up the division one spoils when Tauranga members enjoyed an Xmas Hamper stableford last month. O’Connor had his way with 44 points, two better than Brian Benjamin, and three ahead of Richard Semple. Division two was won with 43 points by Gary Baker, just ahead of David Stratton 42 and Jon Reid, Barry Clement, David Simanu and Bernie Ryan, all with 41. It was also tight in division three, which was won by Alan Brown with 43, while Peter Walker, David Shaw, Stuart Dumbleton and Neville Grey all scored 42.

Golf TRAILS HAMPER FOR HAMPTON Trevor Hampton had cause to smile when topping the stableford returns at Otumoetai’s Open Christmas Hamper last month. Hampton compiled 43 points to head division one, while Neville Harris kept him honest with 42, and 41s were returned by John McNair, Manu Wimutu and Jason Evans. Darryl Parker (Paeroa) produced the best gross round of 71, one better than Damon Clark, while Leon Clark led the nett with 60, a mark matched by runner-up Bill Kennedy. John Berben and Andre Dodd both scored 39 points in the division two stableford where Kerry Snowden and Barry MacPherson managed 38. Con O’Leary had the best gross of 83 and Wallace Roome had the best nett of 62. The women’s stableford was won by Karen Worley with 40 points, one better than Gail Fisk, the gross went to Joan Kennedy for her 79 and Katie Winiata topped the netts with 65. 

TARANAKI GOLF TRAIL TOPS AT TUMAHU

Joseph Doyle was pushed hard all the way before edging fellow Taranaki representative Brook Gray in Tumahu’s senior men’s matchplay final. Doyle won the 36-hole contest 1 up after a particularly tight contest. The intermediate title decider saw Hamish Kape beat Peter Smyth 4 and 3, while Wizz Manuel claimed the junior crown with a 3 and 2 win over Rex Hodson and the limited division was won by Paul Downes, 1 up over Brian Sharpe, The women’s bronze one title went to Molly Jones after her 3 and 2 success over Lydia Braddock, and the bronze two division crown rests with Anne-Marie Sicilliano following her win by an identical margin over Donna Sharpe.

BEARD DOES THE BUSINESS

Hayden Beard made the trip worthwhile by winning the overall gross title at

the Steve Williams Classic mixed age group tournament at Stratford and Inglewood. Beard (Mt Maunganui) completed the four-round event in 11-under-par, shooting a four-under 67 in the first round at Stratford, 65 and 64 at the par-68 Inglewood layout and capping it off with a 71 back at Stratford. The overall girls’ gross winner was Tineka Kumeroa (Manaia), a 12-handicapper who shot 83, 77, 86 and 85 for a 331 total. The overall nett was won by 22-handicapper Angus Holmes (Cambridge) with scores of 64, 67, 59 and 67 for a total of 257. Ten-year-old Brylee Winter (Manaia), a 34-handicapper, won the girls’ nett with a 248 total. She put together scores of 67, 65, 55 and 61. She shot 87 off the stick in the third round, the first time she has bettered 90.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY John Smith celebrated one milestone with another at Eltham. He marked his 60th birthday last month by scoring his first hole in one. Playing on his home course, Smith used

a five iron to ace the 109m par-three seventh hole. Smith’s feat came just a week or so after Manukorihi’s Gary Johnson registered his first ace, using a seven iron to hole out at the 109m par-three ninth.

HARDY BY NAME... Tony Hardy put his experience to good use to win the Westown senior men’s matchplay title. The Taranaki Masters representative held off up and comer Tyla Otene 2 and 1. The intermediate title went to Richard Barlow following a 4 and 2 win over Dan Park while Brian Dombroski won the junior final 5 and 4 over Colin Webby and Errol Tuffery won the limit final over Gavin Grant at the 19th hole. In the weekend’s women’s finals, Rochelle Keegan beat her sister Nicole 2 and 1 to win the silver division, Trish Bryers beat Marg McDougall 2 and 1 in the bronze one decider and Trixie Harvey bettered Patricia Adlam 3 and 1 to claim the bronze two division. URENUI TITLES Urenui’s matchplay champions have been found for 2012. In the senior men’s final Tony Martin beat Peter Armstrong 1 up while Ian Riley beat Dave McCrea 4 and 3 to claim the intermediate title. In the junior final Dave Cambie beat Neale McEwen 7 and 6 and the limit division was won by Phil Schroder, who beat Robert Blyde 1 up. Taranaki Masters representative Svala Garner beat Marisa Newton to win the senior women’s final and Barbara Rawlinson bear Jo Black 4 and 3 to win the intermediate division. In the junior women’s final, Taranaki Golf life member Colleen Hobbs beat Clazino Hagenson on the 19th and Val Holland took the limit title, beating Judith Hymers 2 and 1. The nine-hole championship was won by Elaine Selby, who beat Anthea Davidson 2 and 1.

BIG FIELD AT OPUNAKE A field of 126 players participated in the Opunake Open Christmas Hamper. In the senior men’s division, Troy Forsyth (74-8-66) recorded the best nett while Joseph Doyle shot a three-under-par 68 to head off Tumahu clubmate Brook Gray for the best gross score of the day. In the intermediate division John Julian (78-14-64) won the best nett and Raymond Lewis won the best stableford with 44 points. The junior men’s best nett went to Noel Baldwin (80-19-61) and the best stableford went to Liam Collins with 41 points. The best women’s nett went to Wendy Vickers (101-34-67) while Ann Braithwaite had the best gross score of 82 and Patti Smith the best stableford with 41 points.

The Jenny Ritchie Trophy for the club with the best nett score was won by Hawkestone. Individual nett winners in the silver division were Deb Henrickson (Pongaroa) in bronze one, Pam Charlesworth (Hawkestone) in bronze two and Sandra Pine (Palmerston North) in bronze two over one round.

MERGER TALK SILENCED Moves towards a potential merger of three clubs in Manawatu have hit a dead end. Southern Rangitikei clubs Marton, Hawkestone and Rangitikei briefly entertained the idea of pooling their resources. But the proposal never really got off the ground, after Hawkestone and Rangitikei members voted heavily in favour of retaining their individual status. Marton remain disposed towards a merger but without a willing partner it seems the status quo will remain. Both Hawkestone and Rangitikei have limited memberships and it could be that they will readdress the merger issue if their very existence comes under threat in the future.

Manawatu’s new par-three 16th hole is now being used. The rebuilt hole was opened after a work project which began in February last year. The stopbank, protecting the hole from the adjacent Manawatu River, now lies between the hole and the river. The hole previously lay outside the stopbank, leaving it prone to flooding. The new hole measures 155m off the back championship tees, 131m off the men’s club tees and 109m off the women’s tees. 

CUP SUCCESS FOR LARKIN Featherston’s Denise Larkin has won the Aotearoa Cup, which was first contested in 1931, with a score of 12-under-par in the New Zealand Golf women’s home links event. The competition is run by New Zealand Golf and participated in by clubs throughout the country. Larkin’s score was 1.2 strokes better than her nearest rival. Her winning round was played in April. Playing off a 35 handicap, she scorched around Featherston in 98 shots, using only irons.

TEAM WIN FOR MIRAMAR Miramar won the Wellington champion of champions teams title contested at Boulcott’s Farm. Represented by Brad Rowland, Mike Jensen and Rob Ellis, Miramar scored a combined total of 79 for the morning round and backed this up with a solid 78 in the afternoon. Shandon completed the afternoon round in second place after coming in with 81 points as they made a bold bid to defend their title. Their team comprised Richard Pegg, Rodney Whitmore and Michael Quin. The individual senior honours were shared by Richard Pegg, Rowland and Cruize Wawatai (Paraparaumu Beach) with a two-round total of 143. The low round of the day belonged to Pegg with a 68. Titahi won the Wellington women’s champion of champions team title at Otaki. Wellington representative Te Rongopai Clay, Laureen Sadlier and Josie Pulman took the honours ahead of Kapiti on a countback. The Kapiti team featured Helen Webster, Sharon Menzies and Adrienne Clarke. Titahi came home strong with a combined 50 gross stableford points, boosted by Clay’s 33 points. She also took out the individual honours with rounds of 80 and 75 in less than favourable weather conditions. POA TRUMPS RIVALS Marlborough players made their presence felt at the Tasman men’s champion of champions event contested at Murchison. Tere Poa (Picton) shot a three-under-par 102 over 27 holes to take out the senior gross title. Duncan Marfell (Awatere) secured second placed on 106 after a countback from Brook Hale (Rarangi). Owen Farrell (Awatere) shot 113 to collect the top gross honours in the intermediate competition, one ahead of John Fielding (Nelson).

The junior title went to Gordon Harvey (Nelson) in front of Elton Netto (Totaradale). Hamish McWhinnie (Tasman) won the senior nett with a 99, the intermediate went to Nick Hewitt (Murchison) and the junior was won by Kelvin Eggers (Murchison). Hewitt and Eggers dovetailed nicely with Kerry Foley as Murchison picked up the teams title for the third consecutive year, ahead of the Greymouth trio of Peter Bourke, Rob Harrison and Steve Elwood. Sixteen clubs from Nelson, Buller-Westland and Marlborough were represented at the annual tournament.

HALLINAN STRIPES IT Jake Hallinan has been striping the ball of late on his home course at Weedons. The teenager set a course record off the white tees last month with a stunning eight-under-par 65. That came not long after he returned a 66 off the blue tees, which would also have constituted a course record had it not been set during a pairs competition.

CLASSIC TITLE TO CADENHEAD Oscar Cadenhead held on for victory despite getting the wobbles in the second round of the Woodlands Classic at Harewood. Cadenhead (Clearwater) and Matthew Latham (Harewood) shared the first round lead after shooting gross 74s but both struggled on the second 18 of the 36-hole event.

While Latham tumbled backwards to finish fifth after shooting an 89, Cadenhead also had his issues as he backed up with an 80. But at the end of the day his two-round 154 saw him hold a two-shot buffer over Daniel Laughton (Templeton). Arrowtown capped a dominant season to win the Central Otago men’s interclub championship title. They won four of the eight rounds, including the first at home and the last at Cromwell. Arrowtown held a 19-stroke advantage over Millbrook and 2011 champions Cromwell heading into the final round. At no stage did they look like relinquishing that advantage as the best five nett scores from the six-man team producing a team score of 367 (an average of 73.4). They ended the season with an aggregate 2897, ahead of Cromwell 2917, Millbrook 2929, Dunstan 2939, Queenstown 2947, Wanaka 2976 and Lake Hawea 2987.

Organisers have chartered the Earnslaw vintage steamship at Queenstown on the evening of April 16, with 200 places available onboard for a social trip to Walter Peak Station for a dog trials and sheep shearing exhibition. As well, the tournament prizegiving on the evening of April 19 is to take place at the Skyline Restaurant high above Queenstown, which is one of the region’s tourist magnets.
