o, Maid Merion disrobed to reveal herself as a dominatrix. And what a show she put on as the Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, delivered a truly remarkable US Open last month when tall Englishman Justin Rose won his maiden major at the age of 32. In keeping with the best traditions of the US Open, the course, while short by modern day standards at 6260m and boasting a par of 70, proved a brute to tame as the graduated rough varied from tough at its easiest to extreme at its most challenging. The rough became even rougher due to the torrent of rain which fell on the course before the championship. The soft conditions, exacting pin placements and the el-

Par for the course ements meant the field for the year’s second major was spread far and wide, with Kiwi Michael Campbell among those spat out the other end by the time of the second round cut. By the end of it all Rose blossomed best, a closing round of 70 on the last day seeing him haul in 54-hole leader Phil Mickelson and hold off a posse of challengers for the biggest win of his career. His championship card of oneover-par 281 would have pleased US Open officials, who steadfastly stick to their principles when arguing a par score should be a winning score no matter the

quality of the field. This is the same Justin Rose who tied for fourth at the 1998 British Open as an amateur then marked his early foray in the professional ranks by missing 21 consecutive cuts. He’s certainly come a long way, his Merion heroics seeing him become the first Englishman to win a major since Nick Faldo and the first to win the US Open since Tony Jacklin in 1990. While Rose was left to smell the flowers, there was angst felt in the US where good ole American boy Mickelson had to swallow a bitter pill after his last round 74 left him two shots back

davomedia@gmail.com in second equal with Australian Jason Day. It was the sixth time Mickelson has filled the bridesmaid’s role at the Open. It all made for riveting viewing, especially coming down the stretch on the last day when the potential challengers Rose and fell as the pressure really came on. Back home, June was its usual quiet self on the golf front, the bite of winter gripping much of the country with torrential rain and snow in many parts. One to escape the chill of winter is Sarah Bradley, a young lass from Cambridge who heads to the US this month to pursue her golfing dreams, more than five years after she almost died in a serious car accident. Bradley’s story is featured inside and we hope you enjoy the read.

Ko moving on up

T

he rapid ascension of Lydia Ko on the world stage continues. The 16-year-old Auckland sensation has broken through another glass ceiling, this time barging her way into the top 20 on the official world golf rankings. The Gulf Harbour Country Club member and long-time world No 1 amateur joined the select club after finishing an impressive 17th equal at last month’s major, the LPGA Championship in New York, where she saved her best until last with a closing round of three-under-par 69. That saw her climb 20 places in the field, to finish six shots behind the winner, Inbee Park, of South Korea, who went on to win a playoff against Scotland’s Catriona Matthew. More importantly, her last day flourish saw Ko improve four placings on the world rankings to now sit in 18th place. It was the fourth time Ko has safely negotiated the cut in four major appearances, and the 18th time she has gone the full distance in 18 professional events. The super talented teen, who is surely being courted by any number of commercial suitors as she considers entering the professional ranks at some stage, has now risen 160 places in the world rankings in the past 12 months. Former Ladies European Tour player Liz

McKinnon, who these days works as the high performance co-ordinator for New Zealand Golf, is like everyone else in being blown away by Ko’s continued impact in the upper reaches of the game. ``Lydia’s continual consistent performances on the women’s world professional golf stage has cemented her position as a world class performer,” McKinnon said. ``Moving from 178 to 18 in the world in the last 12 months is testament to the strength of her game mentally and physically. ``The world rankings for women were only introduced in 2006 but Lydia’s current world ranking of 18 is likely to be the highest ever held by a New Zealand woman.” Ko is also streets ahead of her amateur rivals. The New Zealand Women’s Open champion is on 2354.03 average points, more than 600 points clear atop the amateur rankings ahead of Australian SuHyun Oh (1700.00) and American Alison Lee (1663.79). She has been the world No 1 amateur for more than two years and has never lost that mantle since she won the New Zealand strokeplay and New Zealand amateur titles 16-year-old Auckland sensation Lydia Ko Photo: USGA at Russley in Christchurch in 2011. Ko was scheduled to contest her fifth major championship, the US Open, at the Kumho Tyre Ladies Open in China on July Seboneck Golf Club in New York on June 6-9. 27-30, before crossing the Pacific for the She then heads Stateside again for the

Mathoton LPGA Classic in Toledo, Ohio, on July 27-30 ahead of the year’s fourth major, the British Open, next month.

Fox back in the hunt

A

uckland professional Ryan Fox ended a barren patch this year by successfully defending his Fiji Open title last month. The 26-year-old shot rounds of 64 and 65 on the weekend at Vatuwaqa to win the title by nine shots from compatriot, and former New Zealand team-mate, Nick Gillespie. Fox’s final round of sevenunder-par 65 saw him finish on a 20-under 268 total. He was naturally was stoked to return to winning ways. ``I am happy to win again,” Fox said. ``I played a bit scratchy on the first two rounds, especially on Friday as it was a bit windy and wet, but I got out to the weekend and played really well, played some good shots and had fun”. It marked a promising turnaround in form for Fox who had struggled to back up his impressive maiden season as a professional in 2012. He won three times last year, claiming international wins at the Tahiti Open and the Fiji Open after earlier dipping his toe in winning waters at the Martinborough Pro-Am. Wellington’s Gillespie finished on 277, two shots ahead of another Kiwi, Mathew Per-

ry, in third. Fiji was also a happy hunting ground for North Harbour’s Mike Hendry, who secured the Starwood Classic title for the second successive year. Gillespie again filled the bridesmaid’s spot after charging home with a seven-underpar 65, but he was two back of Hendry, who signed off with a 67 and a tournament card of 14-under 274. Hendry and another Kiwi, Daniel Pearce, entered the final round in a share of the lead but Pearce’s bid faltered as a 76 saw him tumble to a share of eighth place on 283. The leading five spots were filled by New Zealanders, with Brad Shilton third on 277, two ahead of Fox and Perry. Fox’s win came almost at the same time another Kiwi, Michael Long, won the 54-hole Spalding Park Open at Geraldton in his adopted home state of Western Australia. Long got into his work early, crafting a seven-under 65 in the first round before a 70 saw him enter the last round tied for the lead with Tasmania’s Craig Hancock. Long was the steadier of the two when it matter, a closing 72 leaving him on nine-under 207 for the tournament, two ahead of Hancock.

S Better late than never for Bradley

arah Bradley has an extra club in her bag as she chases her dream in the United States. The Cambridge player can call on a proven ability to overcome adversity when she leaves on July 20 to compete in three mini-tour events before entering the first stage qualifying school for the LPGA Tour. And the odds are sure to be stacked against her at Mission Hills Country Club in California from August 27 where 216 players will compete for 30 available places to gain entry to the second stage. Tick that box and full status on the second tier Symetra Tour is assured before the second stage contestants battle it out for third stage starts. The odds are long but Bradley is not fazed. She’s overcome tougher hurdles in her 26 years, namely regaining her health after suffering a severe head trauma in a car accident in early 2008. Bradley was holidaying at home during a break in her studies at Oklahoma State University, where she’d spent the previous 18 months on a golf scholarship, when her world fell apart. She was a front seat passenger in a car driven by her father Robert. While her dad escaped injury in the crash, emergency crews took two hours to cut Bradley from the wreck before she was rushed to hospital. She remained there for two weeks before convalescing for eight months at home, frustrated and at times angry as she came to terms with her short term memory loss and drained energy levels. Once she felt well enough to resume her studies, Bradley was cut to the core when her doctor in the US suggest-

there and try.’’ Many of Bradley’s former teammates and college rivals are now on the LPGA Tour, among them Pernilla Lindberg, Caroline Hedwall, Tiffany Joh and Belen Mozo. All are friends who have encouraged Bradley to give it her best shot. ``I have a lot of friends over there who will help me every step of the way.’’ She is more than comfortable with her decision to give the professional ranks a crack, and has a steely determination borne from overcoming what she considers to be a temporary setback in her quest to earn a living from the game. ``The best part of my game at the moment is that I know my strengths. I have it in perspective, I am confident and I also know my swing well enough now to be able to monitor it and maintain things without feeling I have to make drastic changes to get my game so much better. ``If I didn’t believe in what I was doing before, now I really do. You have to get really hard, disregard what others think and take their opinions with a grain of salt. The important people are those in your team who know you well and who really care about you.’’ Golf is very much a head game, and Bradley knows hers better than most. ``I know that I am fully healed from my head injury now and the reason why I know is that I can talk about it now without feeling a yucky cloud hanging over me. ``It’s given me the confidence to know nothing is holding me back now, there is nothing that’s going to be a handicap. ``It’s like a glass ceiling has been lifted.’’

ed she should not play golf competitively. She couldn’t play a full round at that stage anyway, feeling so physically spent that she needed to sleep at regular intervals during the day. She battled with the books, too, memory lapses making it impossible for Bradley to come to grips with her business degree studies, majoring in Japanese. Bradley’s life took a crucial turn when she transferred in January 2009 to Kent State University in Ohio to study communications. Golf remained on the back burner for another year but she benefited hugely from being given a learning specialist who ``taught me how to trick my brain into remembering things’’. She spent 2-1/2 years at Kent before graduating with a bachelor’s degree in applied communications, and played golf again for the last 12 months, ``taking baby steps to relearn the game,’’ until she returned home to Cambridge with a definite goal at the forefront of her mind. Since late 2011 she has worked hard on her game with coach Reon Sayer at the Golf Academy at St Peter’s, recrafting her golfing tools that were sharp enough to earn her selection for New Zealand. As far as Bradley is concerned the time is right to hit the ``play’’ button on her career again after intervening forces pushed a lengthy ``pause’’ back in 2008. ``The odds don’t scare me at all,’’ Bradley told Golfer Pacific NZ. ``The States is a second home for me. I went through a lot of crap when I was there and it made me who I am today. ``I’m doing it now. You will never know if you don’t try. I don’t think I will be full satisfied until I get back out

The Centennial course at Taupo Golf Club

Wairakei Golf + Sanctuary

Taupo, here we come By Martin Davidson

A

ll roads should lead to Taupo in late October for the first edition of The Hilton Lake Taupo Masters. The newest addition to the domestic calendar is the brainchild of Jim Clelland, who has collaborated with Aaron Carter of Total Sport to organise a 54-hole pairs tournament for men and women aged 35 and over. Clelland, the long-time national events manager for the New Zealand PGA, has long recognised Taupo as a golfing des-

tination in its own right, with three high quality courses within a 20km radius of his home in the lakeside township. Kinloch, Wairakei and the Centennial course at Taupo Golf Club will host the Masters from October 30-November 1. Playing them individually is special enough and tournament director Clelland is sure the chance to play all three in three days will provide a memorable experience. ``In late October the condition of the three courses will be as good as you can get them,’’ he said. Entries are now open for the inaugural

tournament, which Clelland hopes will grow to command a permanent place on the calendar. The Hilton hotel chain has come on board as the principal naming rights sponsor, with tournament prizes to include accommodation packages in Australia, while the Taupo District Council is also helping out in a funding capacity because it fully appreciates the importance of golf to the region. The format will see players compete in combined score pairs at Wairakei and Centennial, while best ball scoring will be used at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Kinloch in a nod to the difficulty of that particular course. While it is a pairs tournament, there will be recognition for individual performances.

Clelland has played the three courses regularly enough to be in a prime position to give each a ringing endorsement. ``Kinloch is something very special. I think it is up there as the best in New Zealand. It can be very tough but obviously we will set these courses up at a sensible playing level. ``Wairakei is a golf course everyone wants to play. It is a course for all levels of golfers and they go away with big smiles on their faces. ``Centennial is the secret surprise of the three. It’s gone through some transformations. It’s a 40-year-old golf course which grew up with all the trees growing on it. Now, they’ve been knocked over and now it has a linksy look to it. The greens are superb.’’

in his final round that saw him climb 10 places on the leaderboard. Toomey has been one of the most impressive performers on the national scene this year. He finished runner-up to Grant Moorhead at the LawnMaster Classic, runner-up in the amateur honours at the Taranaki Open and he won the qualifying event for the New Zealand amateur championship by 11 shots after shooting a phenomenal 11-under-par 61. Manawatu’s Josh Munn couldn’t repeat his top 10 effort in the Mexico tournament from a year ago and had to settle for a share of 32nd place on 289.

T

he golfing world of the 1970s was vastly different to today. The European Tour played all its tournaments in Europe during the northern hemisphere summer; the PGA Tour had a longer season but essentially wrapped up by October and Australian events fitted into a January-February time frame. That left a window for an extended New Zealand professional circuit from Labour Weekend until early January. A glance at the 1976 programme shows seven 72-hole tournaments and 10 ProAms fitting into that space, ranging from the $500 Drysdale Ales Pro-Am at Maungakiekie to the $35,000 NZ Airlines Golf Classic at Russley, with total prizemoney of about $200,000. That may not sound much by today’s standards, but if we consider that the 1971 US Open at Merion was played for $US190,000, and translate that into the 2013 purse equivalent, our circuit was effectively worth about $8 million in today’s money. Certainly it was enough to attract a dazzling array of overseas stars to these shores, from a 20-year-old Severiano Ballesteros (who won the Otago Charity Classic in 1977), to the likes of Tom Watson,

New Zealand PGA Chief Executive

How good were those guys? Tom Kite, George Archer, Tom Weiskopf, Sam Snead, George Archer, Tony Jacklin, Jumbo Ozaki and all the top Australians headed by Peter Thomson and Kel Nagle. Some may have come for a spot of fishing, but collectively they made up the strongest fields this country has ever seen, or is likely to see. However, local golfers more than held their own in 1976, with Simon Owen winning the NZ Open and John Lister three other tournaments including the PGA Championship. He was also runner-up in the Airlines Classic at Russley, having won that tournament (previously known as the Garden City Classic) four times in a row from 1972 to 1975. In the history of tournament golf around the world, such a feat has only been matched by one other golfer: Tiger Woods with four Bay Hill Invitationals

from 2000 to 2003. Arguably, John has not received the recognition he deserved. Between 1972 and 1977, he won 10 of the 25 four-round tournaments played in New Zealand, including three PGA Championships. He was more than competitive overseas, winning two European Tour events and the Quad Cities Open (now the John Deere Classic) in the US to cap off an outstanding 1976 year. He played in seven majors and made the cut in each of them, including the 1971 US Open at Merion. He was the only player to birdie the notorious 18th during the final round, and finished with a four round total of 290, which earned him $US1080. The identical score in the 2013 Open was worth $US116,000. Playing in the same field was Bob Charles, who finished 17th with a total of 286,

and $US2220 as a result. In 2013, that would have been a top 10 finish worth $US210,000. Back in the 1970s, we probably didn’t appreciate how good these players were on the world stage, and how fortunate we were to watch golf of such quality for a good part of the summer. We cannot replicate that against the crowded and competing tour schedules of today, but we should certainly acknowledge the importance of hard competitive golf on our home circuit as the base for building success at the highest level, and do our best to support it wherever we can.

Back in the 1970s, we probably didn’t appreciate how good these players were on the world stage...

Andrew Whiley

Resident Pro at Chisholm Park, Dunedin

Has major golf evolved? A s I watched the recent US Open at Merion, I was amazed to see how an `old style golf’ course can still test the best players. It made me think back in time how players over the last 100 years have scored, how much money they have earned and just how the courses have changed in length and style with advances in agronomy. One must also factor in technology advances both in club technology and golf ball construction. At Merion, Olin Dutra won the US Open in 1934 with a winning score of +13. He received $1000. In 1950, Ben Hogan lifted the trophy with a winning score of +7 and received $4000. He won in a playoff over Lloyd Mangrum and George Fazio. Then in 1971, Lee Trevino won in a playoff over Jack Nicklaus and received $30,000. In 1981, David Graham won the US Open with a winning score of seven-under par and received $55,000. This year, Justin Rose wins the Open with a score of one-over par and pockets $1.44 million.

What is more interesting is how the golf course varied in length from 6670 yards in 1934 and 1950, down to 6540 yards in 1971 and 1981 (yes, shorter than both 1934 and 1950). Only to have it lengthened out to 6996 yards for this year’s event. The average length of courses on the PGA Tour in 2009 was 7250 yards. On the Saturday, the par-three 17th hole played at over 250 yards and the parfour 18th hole measured 530 yards. The course was a beast in many ways. As you are reading this article, Muirfield Golf Club will be getting ready to host the 2013 British Open. In 1912, Ted Ray won the Open with a score of sevenover par and received a 50 pound winner’s cheque. In 1966, Jack Nicklaus won with a score of two-under and a winner’s cheque of 2100 pounds. This year the winner will receive about 900,000 pounds. In 1966, the course measured 6887 yards and this year the course will measure 7245 yards. The difference today is in course set-up and agronomy. Golf courses for modern

day majors are generally going through full makeovers with greens being renovated and made more undulating, bunkers introduced and new tees built. The green surfaces are slick and even the fairways are mown to precision with over eight mowers sweeping up every fairway. Imagine being a member at Merion or Muirfield, and heading out to play the week after the Open! In addition, we have today’s club technology with 46-inch Titanium drivers, 60-degree and 64-degree wedges (Phil Mickelson) and balls that are not only more consistent but which also go further. Shouldn’t this result in at least a 10 percent increase in distance and an improvement in scores? The players playing over 50 years ago were presented with these challenging courses that had slower, flatter greens and less rough. Wouldn’t it be an interesting exercise to see today’s players play Merion or Muirfield as a regular club member set using 50-year-old equipment to see the differences in performances

and skill levels? I am a firm believer that in the last 100 years, the PGA tour player has evolved. Today, a player who wins a major championship cannot have any weakness in their games. They need to drive the ball effectively but also have a deft touch around the greens. Evolution in golf is amazing and I would be interested to see what NZPGA members are saying about golf when they are celebrating the 200th anniversary of the association. Just imagine what the winners cheques will look like.

In addition, we have today’s club technology ... and balls that are not only more consistent but which also go further.

Say a long goodbye to anchor putters

G

olf’s governing bodies have announced they will ban the anchoring of putters from 2016 in a move which will please traditionalists but could lead to a split in the game among the professional ranks. The ban was first proposed by the Royal and Ancient (R&A) and the United States Golf Association (USGA) last November. Players and the golfing community were then given 90 days in which to discuss the proposal. The European Tour expressed its support for the idea but both the PGA Tour and PGA of America voiced opposition. ``We took a great deal of time to consider this issue and received a variety of contributions from individuals and organisations at all levels of the game,’’ R&A chief executive Peter Dawson said. ``We recognise this has been a divisive issue but after thorough consideration we remain convinced this is the right decision for golf.’’ USGA president Glen D Nager said the new rule would uphold the ``essential nature of the traditional method of the stroke and eliminate the possible advantage that anchoring provides’’. ``Having considered all the input that we received, both before and after the pro-

posed rule was announced, our best judgment is it is necessary to preserve one of the important traditions and challenges of the game – that the player freely swing the entire club,’’ Nager said. While anchoring will be banned from 2016, long putters can still be used as long as players freely swing the club away from their bodies. Golf could become extremely muddled, or messy at the very least, as it waits to see whether the PGA Tour and the PGA of America back the ban. The PGA Tour acknowledged the move but will not commit to adopting the new

I just believe the art of putting is swinging the club and controlling nerves”

- Tiger Woods

rule in its competitions. ``The PGA Tour acknowledges the USGA has adopted Rule 14-1b which prohibits anchored putting as of January 1, 2016,’’ it said in a statement. ``We will now begin our process to ascertain whether the various provisions of Rule 14-1b will be implemented in our competitions. We will announce our position regarding the application of Rule 141b to our competitions upon conclusion of our process.’’ Last November’s announcement by the rulemakers came after three of the previous five major champions had used `belly’ putters – Keegan Bradley (2011 US PGA Championship), Webb Simpson (2012 US Open) and Ernie Els (2012 British Open). Australian Adam Scott then followed suit when he won the US Masters in April while using a long putter anchored to his chest. Dawson said the recent successes in majors by players using anchored putters had not been a factor. ``No, I can say unequivocally that that had absolutely no impact,’’ he told Britain’s Sky Sports News. ``The greater concern was the increasingly widespread use of them in tour events, up to 26 percent in one case. There was also the concern that young people

coming into the game are being taught that that is the way to putt.’’ Many of the game’s leading players, including world No 1 Tiger Woods and second-ranked Rory McIlroy, have backed the ban. ``I just believe the art of putting is swinging the club and controlling nerves,’’ 14-times major champion Woods said. ``Having it as a fixed point... is something that’s not in the traditions of the game. We swing all other 13 clubs. I think the putter should be the same.’’ South African great Gary Player welcomed the joint announcement. ``Must congratulate the R&A,” he said. ``I think three years is a long time – I think one year would have been right but I’m not going to argue with it. ``I spent hours and hours training my mind to have good nerves under pressure. The long putter takes away the nerves, it allows you to hide the nerves and nerves are an integral part of the game of golf.’’ Eight-times European No 1 Colin Montgomerie was another to agree with the ban. ``Glad to see that common sense has prevailed,’’ the Scot said. ``I have used an anchored putter and it was easier to putt with it, rather than without, but I’m in favour of the ban.’’

FEATURE: Visit Otago

Golf Clubs you must visit in

by Michael Minty

The Otago region in New Zealand’s south island boasts a number of quality courses which offer golfers of all levels different challenges while showcasing the best of both rural and urban New Zealand. The best way to spend a week is to start in Queenstown and work your way down through central Otago towards Dunedin. Along the way there are some fantastic golf courses that you will never see in your local golf magazine or on television. Some may even be small town courses where you might be the only person on the course but by all means, it’s not because the course is considered “a goat track”. As a golfer and a greens superintendant who has lived in both central and coastal Otago, I have been fortunate enough to play on all of these courses over the years. So I have come up with a list of 10 courses you must play if visiting the region. My opinion is based on a 1-10 points system on the following characteristics:

zz Enjoyment factor zz Course maintenance zz Facilities zz Scenery zz Course layout zz Green fees

I have done it this way so that rankings aren’t weighted heavily on my own opinion although there were some characteristics that I have strong views on what makes a good golf course and club in general.

10) North Otago golf club zz Blue 6035m zz White 5687m zz Ladies 5237m

Situated on the east coast in the sea-side town of Oamaru which lies 114kms north of Dunedin. The course offers both rural and seaside views of the Pacific Ocean. The feature holes include the par 4 3rd which is known as “coronary hill” which winds its way around a dogleg to the left with trouble also left, and finishes with a steep climb to a tiny green cut into the side of the hill. Also the 15th is a short par 3 about 115m that drops down a hill that is well bunkered and a creek on the right. The uncanny small greens sometimes require patience and positioning off the tee. Generally an approach shot to the middle of any green is a good option. The course is well maintained and the club employ a head greenkeeper who has a big army of volunteers, many of who have given over 30 years of service to the club. Green fees are around the $25 mark and club hire is available. Despite Oamaru not being the heart of Otago’s golf trail, it is on State highway 1 on route to Christchurch and is well worth a look if you are passing through.

9) Roxburgh golf club zz White 4370m zz Ladies 4079m

Situated on the southern side of Roxburgh, Central Otago, Roxburgh is a little gem and is rated the cheapest course on the list to play with a fee of $20 and is an absolute “must play” if travelling through from central to Dunedin or vice versa. It is a short course but what makes Roxburgh special is the way each hole is laid out in amongst the rocky Central Otago terrain. The front 9 offers a lot of risk and reward with a number of driveable par 4s but if you stray too far from the fairway then you could find yourself out of bounds and writing down a ringer on the card. The back 9 is a touch longer but opens up into a more conventional looking course, by that I mean less rocks, less out of bounds and more open. So for the golfer who is hitting it average all day, this is where they can open the shoulders and not be punished as severely. Facilities are pretty standard and generally greens fees are paid into an honesty box but if you are lucky enough to meet the locals then you will doubt be greeted by a warm welcome.

8) Taieri Lakes golf club zz Blue 5617m zz White 5138m zz Ladies 5138m

Located just 15 mins from Dunedin city near Mosgiel, North Taieri. If you are up for a challenge then this course is for you as it demands a combination of accuracy, strategy, and length in particular. Despite not looking overly daunting on the scorecard, Taieri seems to play a lot longer than its measured length especially on the back nine where holes 10 – 15 require a good long game. However it features a short front nine including par5′s on the 1st and 5th which for the bigger hitters are in reach for 2 shots, But the signature hole is probably one of the best holes in the country, the par 4 6th. The hole offers a couple of options from the tee. A 140m lay up to a plateau will leave about a 110m pitch to the green, which is located over a big pond. This will catch anything that lands 10-20m short of the green, but if you can carry 240m+ off the tee then having a go at the green can offer a risk or reward result. There is an op-

Otago

portunity to bail out to the left into a big bank as the right side is definitely a no-go zone as the pond carries on around the corner. So if you have a demon fade in the armoury that comes out when least expected then maybe the driver isn’t for you. Also beware of a tail wind as the green is protected by another pond in behind. However your only making one visit to Taieri Lakes then make the most of the opportunity and have a crack at the 6th. Green fees are great value at $35 which is about as cheap as it gets for a city 18 hole course. Club hire available from pro-shop.

ably in the spring or autumn as the fairways are un-irrigated and tend to burn off most summers so obviously drain well during wet periods. The facilities are excellent and all club, cart and coaching requirements are available from the pro shop. Green fees are around $60

6) Queenstown golf club (Kelvin Heights) zz Blue 6072m zz White 5839m zz Ladies 5173m

7) Chisholm Park Links zz Blue 5866m zz White 5414m zz Ladies 5022m

Rated as one of the best links courses in New Zealand. Chisholm Park is situated next to St Kilda beach and offers stunning views both of Dunedin city and the Pacific ocean. People I know who have played Chisholm Park often use the phrase ” you can’t beat Chisholm on a nice day”. That’s probably because the course plays so differently depending on the weather and also because a calm day on the links can be hard to come by. Being a coastal links course means it is exposed to the elements. In a southerly it is brutal and a true test of golf. Most holes run predominantly in a north-south direction. But it’s the stretch of holes between 9 to 15 that can destroy any score card when the southerly rears it’s ugly head as they are all into the wind except the 9th which is the infamous Lawyers head hole. This hole hugs the cliff-top and weaves it’s way over a hill into the corner of Lawyers head. A par 4 405m off blue tees, it requires a solid drive preferably favouring the right side. Into the wind, you’ll be more likely hitting a blind shot for your second shot of at least 180m but be warned that any shot landing left and short will more than likely feed left and end up over the cliff which is at least marked as a hazard so a penalty drop can be taken. However if your a fair weather golfer and can choose a fine day to play Chisholm Park then you’ll enjoy the wide fairways and big greens which will hopefully help out the score card. The best time to play Chisholm Park is prob-

Ever seen a post-card of Queenstown? If so then it has probably been taken from the gondola and features the Kelvin Heights peninsula. This is home to the Queenstown golf club which is a picturesque golf club that offers not only views of the Remarkables mountain range and Lake Wakatipu but an exciting challenge of golf. Queenstown golf club is a tree line course that is reasonably hilly but when you reach the top of a hill you have to check of your surroundings and marvel at where you are in the world. But what goes up must come down, and this where the average golfer either is rewarded with some generous yardage as your ball tumbles down a favourable slope, or you’re left feeling a little robbed when your ball receives a average bounce into the trees. The signature hole and probably one of the more scenic photographs on a New Zealand golf course would be the par 4 5th that curves left around the shoreline of Lake Wakatipu to an elevated green. Driving line is key as an over aggressive line combined with a miss-timed drive will see you ending up in the drink, however the hole sets up for a right to left shaped drive which will carve yardage off your approach shot. The facilities are excellent, carts and club hire available from the pro shop. Green fees range from $75-95 depending on seasons.

5) Wanaka Golf Club

golferpacific.co.nz zz Blue 5743m zz White 5474m zz Ladies 5038m

The picturesque town of Wanaka in Central Otago is home to the Wanaka golf club which sits perched above the township and Lake Wanaka. This course’s reputation is improving from year to year, as well as the Wanaka lakes area becoming a popular tourist destination for all kinds of outdoor recreation. The club itself has really progressed over the last 10 years due to machinery and irrigation upgrades so there’s no surprises now when you turn up to find place in good nick. The club played host to the NZ seniors championship in 2009 which is an honour for any club to hold such a prestigious tournament. The course plays quite short but sets up for a golfer who can shape the ball (intentionally!) off the tee. Caution is also required with approach shots as most of the original greens were just mown into the fairways, meaning some shots can roll off easily. The par 4 hole 7th is a demanding driving hole that requires a decent nudge from the tee. A mid iron shot up hill to a redeveloped plateau green will require a well weighted approach as generally all the greens are quite small so it pays to play safe to the middle of this green. Wanaka’s green fees are $60 and all general facilities are available including club hire and a fully stocked pro shop. It is great little club so check it out.

4) Otago Golf Club (Balmacewen) zz Blue 5705m zz White 5407m zz Ladies 5133m

The Otago Golf Club or “Balmac” as it is affectionately known by the locals is one of the oldest courses in the southern hemisphere. It is situated in Dunedin city itself and is traditionally called New Zealand’s home of golf. This is can be one of Otago’s greatest tests of golf both mentally and physically as players face steep climbs to elevated greens and daunting approach shots down to some greens where wind gusts can come and go as they please. The greens are reasonably well sized and can provide some interesting breaks while the fairways are guaranteed to have the classic criss cross pattern mowed into them which looks quite smart. But what makes “Balmac” unique is the setting. Although it is nestled in amongst urban Dunedin, the north-western side of the course showcases the best of the local flora and fauna, in particular the native ferns and Manuka trees that border the courses signature hole, the 11th or otherwise know as “The Glen”. The Glen is a 340m par 4, from an elevated tee which is probably the best part of 50-70m above the landing zone. You have trouble to the far right up a bank but can get lucky with a slight push, and out of bounds left. About 130140m short of the green is your target if you’re

spraying it and need a wide runway. If you try to bite off more yards then the fairway gradually narrows to a point where the ball can kick left towards the native out of bounds area. The green itself is well bunkered and slopes from front to back which can be very deceiving as well as the out of bounds still looping around left and back fringes. If you walk off with a par then you’ve done well, a birdie however is something most golfers dream about when playing the famous “Glen”. Just one note however, the course does feature a few steep climbs the demand a reasonable standard of fitness. The main test is the last hole which can be a long drag home up to green and then some to the club house. Alternatively a golf cart can be hired and may be the best way to get around the course. The facilities at the course are excellent, while the fully stocked pro shop provides coaching and. Green fees are $75.

3) St Clair Golf Club zz Blue 5943m zz White 5483m zz Ladies 5249m

The St Clair Golf Club is located above the cliffs of St Clair beach in Dunedin. This course is Dunedin’s version of the panoramic Queenstown golf club as it offers views of most of the city, the Pacific Ocean and Otago’s southern coastline. The course itself has quite possibly some of the best manicured fairways of any public golf course in New Zealand which gives any golfer with a hint of talent an opportunity to the get their ball to bite on the predominantly sand based greens. Being situated on a cliff means the course can be at Mother Nature’s mercy, a lot like Chisholm Links down the other end of the beach. However protecting a lot of holes from the wind are rows of pine trees which can lure the best of golfers into a false shot. The front 9 can play a lot easier on a calm day as it is shorter and there are less trees to contend with. The back 9 on the other hand is a little longer and tighter but throws up two relatively easy par 5′s that can provide a good scoring opportunity. However if the wind picks up then strangely enough sometimes the back 9 seems to play a little easier. The 18th hole is probably one of the more enjoyable holes to play despite a slight climb towards the clubhouse which sits literally on the apron of the green. A shortish par 4, the 18 requires a decent tee shot to a fairway sloping right to left. The left side is bunkered from about 240m from the tee and a bunker on the other side can also be a nuisance. The kidney shaped green was redeveloped and only opened late last year and is surrounded by an embankment that creates a certain amphitheatre as it makes a fantastic spectator hole from both on the ground and in the clubhouse. It is really fun hole to finish on if you can get a good drive away and set yourself up for a birdie. St Clair caters to all golfers with all the basic facilities and 19th watering hole that is open 5 days a week for the thirsty golfer. Green fees are $60.

over 100 years ago was once a hive of activity during the gold rush era. The course borders the outskirts of Arrowtown which is about 20km from the centre of Queenstown and offers stunning views of some well known ski fields, the Remarkables and Coronet Peak. If you are lucky enough to play on this hidden gem then you’ll will no doubt be blown away by the unique layout of the course as the narrow rolling fairways weave their way through valleys and rocky pillars very much like Roxburgh golf club. In the summertime the Browntop grass in the long rough is left to seed, leaving a colour scheme that represents a truly natural setting and makes the course look like a postcard. Last year the course won the New Zealand Golf Course Superintendants Association (NZGCSA) Environment award which recognises New Zealand’s leading golf course in relation to their environmental management practices. The club under took the removal of wilding trees and broom, while re-establishing Matagouri amongst the schist rock outcrops. From a playability perspective, the course is the shortest out of the top 5 but probably requires the most accuracy from tee to greens. Again like Wanaka, Roxburgh and North Otago, the greens are very small. However for any big hitters, there are a lot of risk and reward holes that can provide a lot of birdies but also double bogeys and beyond. One of the best holes is the 18th which requires a blind shot over a hill to a fairway that slopes to the left towards a pond. A good drive leaves only a wedge shot to the green and a good birdie opportunity however getting a good drive away is the key. Club hire is available and green fees are $75.It is a course that really screams Central Otago at you and is experience that you just can’t afford to miss out on.

1) Cromwell Golf Club zz Blue 6234m zz White 5844m zz Ladies 5204m

Located in the Cromwell township in Central

Otago. This course has had a major transformation in the last 5 years with former NZ open winner and now course designer Greg Turner redeveloping a large chunk of the course which now resembles a sand-based links course except its 200km away from the sea. Cromwell offers so much for the typical golfer. Unlike many of the smaller clubs, Cromwell’s greens are massive and undulating while the fairways resemble a roller-coaster ride which will either add 20-30m if you find the down slopes. With the redevelopment, the course changed dramatically from a typical park-lands course with huge old pines lining the fairways, to the now barren but open driving holes where the prevailing Nor-wester can take hold of any erratic shots. The rough can be a challenge, mainly because of the sandy lies or the pre-planted Marram grass (or tussock as some may call it). The big greens mean it is important to not just hit it somewhere on the green but to actually hit reasonably close to the flag, as some of the new greens have some funky undulations that almost resemble a hole from mini golf. The funny thing with Cromwell, is that you can walk off the course feeling like you’ve played ok, but if it’s not reflected on your scorecard then you’ve probably had a few 3-putts. The redeveloped 18th is the hole to mention which was once a par 3 but now a long 393m par 4 of the blue tees. The old tee block is pretty much thin air now as the new tee is now on the old 17th block. Off the back tees into the wind it can be brutal and requires a well struck drive just to get you into the valley which is guarded by steep bunkers either side and thick rough. The approach shot however is a lot more appealing as the fairway rolls down into a basin green but watch out for the frontright green-side bunker. There are also a number of other unique holes on the course including exciting doglegs, driveable par 5′s which everyone loves, and tricky par 3′s that punish wayward tee shots. Green fees are $50 and club hire is available. Make sure you take the time to visit the bar afterwards and watch golfers finish their round from the verandah as the 18th makes great viewing from above at Cromwell. So we conclude the Top 10 golf courses to play in Otago. Whether you just visiting friends or perhaps over the ditch for a skiing holiday. Be sure to test your skills on some of Otago’s finest public courses. Hope you’ve enjoyed a sneak preview into what truly is New Zealand’s golfing heartland.

2) Arrowtown Golf Club zz White 5495m zz Ladies 5035m

Arrowtown golf club is the jewel in the crown literally as it sits below the Crown Range and runs alongside the famous Arrow river which

Women's Weekend Pennants

NORTHLAND GOLF TRAIL NEHO’s GOLDEN RUN CONTINUES W hangarei golfer Kadin Neho’s year just keeps getting better. No doubt enjoying his purple patch of late the talented Whangarei teenager won a third straight Westpac Northern Wairoa Open at the weekend. The event this Photo: Photosport year doubled as a Northland senior and junior trial so competition was expected to be tight as players looked to stake their claim for representative selection. Chase McKeown (Waipu) set the early pace, a two under par 70 in Saturdays morning round giving him a two shot advantage over Houhora teenager Ben Kennedy and former Northland representative Michael Perrin (Kerikeri) at even par (72) with Neho four shots adrift on 74. The final nine holes of the day (the format is 27 holes per day) saw Neho make his move and surge past McKeown (35) who faltered with a couple of late bogies. Navigating some treacherous pin placements Neho posted a staggering seven under par 29 to take him to five under heading into day two and set tongues wagging about the possibility of a 59 when he returned to

complete the second round Sunday. Neho began day two with a back nine 33 to give him a second round 62 and a total of 136 with one round to play. Six shots back in the chasing pack were McKeown (142) closely followed by Perrin (144) and Luke Brown (146). A final round 69 from saw Neho to win number three in a row at Northern Wairoa, his 11 under par (205) total matching his winning score in 2012. Second went to the consistent McKeown at 2 under while the fast finishing Brown (The Pines) beat Perrin for third place by a single stroke. Alex Neely (Kerikeri) finished with a two under par 70 to round out the top five. Senior players now have a month long break to prepare for the next trial, the Bream Bay Classic at Waipu Golf Club on the 6th and 7th of July.

HIKURANGI/WHANGAREI AND WAIPU DO BATTLE The final of the 2013 Northland Junior Pennant competition was played at Northland Golf Club on Sunday 9 June. The annual Northland junior club championship had a change in format this year to encourage more youngsters into the competition. Teams this year comprised a mix of two Kiwi Tee players and two full course players. The ‘Kiwi Tees’ are an initiative

brought in by NZ Golf that sees juniors play from forward tees of Kiwi Handicaps. Typically holes are 90m for a par 3, 135m for a par 4 and 180m for a par 5 meaning players as young as 5 and 6 years old have a chance at birdie and par, thus increasing their enjoyment in the game. Currently there are eight clubs in Northland with Kiwi Tee’s registered and rated with NZ Golf with a further three in progress. The Mangawhai Stingrays and Whangaroa teams got the finals action underway with the third and fourth playoff. The matches between the numbers one and two went one each way, Jamie Thomas claiming the win for Mangawhai over Bradley Foster, while Taylor Wyatt-Logan (Whangaroa) saw off the challenge of Aston Hoskins to see the match evenly poised. The Whangaroa three and four pairing of Kenny Wyatt-Logan and Ethan Leslie finished strong narrowly claiming both matches with wins over Aaron Allot and Pacey Laing-Smith to claim the bronze medal. The final was a similar story with both Hikurangi/Whangarei and Waipu claiming one win each from the one and two matches. Wirihana Williams, captain for Hikurangi/Whangarei had proved to be the rock at the top for his side all season, having claimed four wins from four playing at number one. The final proved no different as Williams finished the 2013 season in style with a big win over his Waipu opposite Michael McRae to finish a perfect five from five for the year. For Waipu, Norton Brown proved just as effective finishing unbeaten for the season with three wins and a half from his four matches. It took a big effort on the back nine from the

CALM WEATHER FOR SAIL ROCK

Forgetting that we’re into the supposed first month of Winter, the weather stayed bright, clear and warm for the annual Sail Rock Cafe Mixed Open at the Mangawhai Golf Club. Held on the Sunday of Queen’s Birthday Weekend, this popular tournament drew a near-capacity field of 120 golfers comprising Mangawhai members and visitors from many other clubs. Sponsor Margaret Fish brought along a strong team of supporters and ensured that a very attractive prize table was there for the taking by the better golfers. Gross, Nett and Stableford competitions were held across two Men’s divisions and one for Ladies. The course was, as always, in outstanding condition and the clear blue skies ensured a day that was enjoyed by all – even those whose golf didn’t quite make the grade. Best round of the day was recorded by Ray Snooks (Huapai and Mangawhai)

golferpacific.co.nz whose gross 74 was the result of good placement and an accurate short game. Best ladies score was posted by Sara Jasmat (Muriwai), her 84 putting her 4 shots clear of Kath Clark (Peninsula). Club President Mike Howard (himself a somewhat surprising winner on the day) presided over the well-attended prizegiving and he thanked Margaret Fish for her generous contribution to the success of the event.

NORTH HARBOUR GOLF TRAIL

nament. Harbour Golf sent its senior squad to the event in an initial warm up and trial for the end of year interprovincial being held at the red course of North Shore. The course and conditions were not easy but the players enjoyed the greens and scored accordingly. Kevin Budden (Waitemata) pictured below with Healthaire sponsor and North Shore Member Rowland Griffiths won the event with rounds of 68, 65 and 70 for a 13 under total, superb golf in the conditions. Runner up was Jerry Ren (Gulf Harbour) with an 8 under total. The Ladies 54 Hole Championship division was decided by an exciting play off with North Shore’s Sai Ma defeating Celyn Khoo (Pakuranga) on their first playoff hole with an excellent putt to clinch the title. Sai carded a 73 in her final round to make the play off. The women’s Masters division was won by Northlands Kylie Jacoby.

FINALS DAY The 7th annual men’s pennants finals day was held at Gulf Harbour on May 19th. The day involves 3 major interclub matches, the Nobilo Championship (Premier Grade), Rangitoto Reserves Trophy (Championship second teams) and the promotion / relegation match. In the Nobilo Championship Grade a close match ensued between Muriwai and Waitemata. Muriwai seemed to have the advantage until a late surge by Waitemata closed the gap. The final score was 4.5 to 3.5 to Muriwai which showcased some of the strongest players in the North Harbour district matched against each other. Muriwai (team pictured below) won the title for the first time since 2009 when they won an

unprecedented four titles in a row. In the Rangitoto Grade a resilient Peninsula Golf Club proved too strong for North Shore Golf Club with a 5-3 victory. There are certainly some talented players at Peninsula Golf Club and this may well bolster the strength of their Championship Nobilo Team in years to come. In the promotion relegation match Pupuke who finished last after round robin play completed earlier in the competition faced West Coast winners Huapai who had a 5-3 victory to gain entry into the top Nobilo grade. Well done to Huapai who join the top clubs in the Nobilo Grade next year

JUNIOR PENNANTS The 2013 season has concluded for junior pennants in the North Harbour district. Peninsula has won Section A of the competition and Whangaparaoa won Division B. Congratulations to both clubs on their fantastic results.

Prime Minister John Key (pictured) proved to be a very useful golfer when he did the honours at the opening of the Remuera Golf Club’s new driving range facility earlier this month. His blood-letting drive – high, straight and true – was met with enthusiastic applause – and quite a bit of envy. The Prime Minister complimented the Club on the recently-completed building – a structure comprising 15 all-weather booths – but said it should come with a disclaimer. He’d used the range frequently

golferpacific.co.nz in the past and noted ruefully that he was never able to transfer the “pure” shots to the course itself. A number of fun events marked the occasion – including a longest drive competition and a prize for any lucky golfer able to score a hole-in-one (a VW Tiguan courtesy of Continental Cars). The car’s ownership was never challenged, but Matthew Blackbourn blitzed the longest-drive competitors with a 295m monster hit. The Club says the new booths expand the range’s existing practise infrastructure (comprising a bunker and a green for pitch shots), and they offer multiple benefits. “An all-weather facility extends the golfer’s practice window into the winter months,” says general manager Chris Davies, “when Auckland’s notoriously flukey weather becomes even more unpredictable. “But it also offer a lot more flexibility for our formal training programmes. It gives our team of golf professionals much more freedom in catering to the needs of their clients. It will, in particular, prove an enormous advantage for our very active Junior Academy Programmes.” The Club has about 130 junior members a mixture of boys and girls between the ages of ten and 17. Beginners attend the Golf Academy’s ‘Gold Development’ classes and after gaining the necessary skills and experience, they become eligible to play the course – with dedicated Junior tee-times reserved on Saturday mornings. The Club regularly has 30 -40 junior golf-

The machine is equipped with an swipe card terminal – but golfers can also pay in the nearby golf shop. “Casual visitors might be interested to know that each of the 15 booths is equipped with fittings to hold mobile phones – allowing the golfers to video and analyse their swings. Each booth has two fittings – one in front, one to the side – so they can record their golf swing from two angles.” Recording a swing on a mobile phone, he adds, will appeal to all the tech-savvy golfers because there are plenty of phone Apps for helping with swing analysis. Pakuranga Golf Club has had their recent application to the Howick Local Board approved. The application was lodged to the facilities partnership funding to cover the $60K cost of constructing a covered in all-weather golf coaching facility at the southern end of the practice fairway, and specifically for use by Club Professional Sam Thomas and his team. Furthermore, the club’s application for a coaching grant for $27K, from Counties Manukau Sports to fund SNAG golf programmes through 4 local schools and 2000+ children has also been approved.

This funding means things are looking great for the development of golf at Pakuranga, but more particularly, junior golf in the area will receive a real boost.

trees, about a hundred and twenty metres from the green. He decided that he had no option but to play a strong punch shot and simply hope for the best. A low branch deflected the ball, which then thundered into the open lid of a large rubbish bin near the 10th tee. The heavy lid slammed shut with the noise of a shot gun. From there, as if assisted by a secret guidance system, the ball flew a further sixty metres, finishing on the green from where Botica completed the hole with two putts for par. Botica’s matchplay opponent Vic Weeks (Waitemata) also made par on the hole, in regulation fashion. Weekes commented that he considered conceding the three metre putt to his opponent after witnessing what happened, as it was obvious that he was competing against divine intervention. Needless to say, Botica went on to win the match.

24  GOLFER PACIFIC July 2013

May 25 was a unique day in the annals of The Morrinsville Golf Club with both the senior men’s pennant teams winning their respective divisions, 3 and 5, in the Waikato Golf Club Senior Pennant tournament. This is unprecedented in the Club’s history and the club thinks that few others would have achieved this feat. Our two teams are considered as being two of the youngest teams out of all the playing teams so this augers well for the future. Playing the finals at St Andrews Hamilton Golf Club the Division III team won 6.5/4.5 over Horsham Downs. The Division V team had a tighter win 5/4 over Stewart Aleader of Te Awamutu. The teams were Division III Cole Townsend (captain), Sam Woodham, Jason Adams, Jason Boobyer, Daniel Smith and Blair Flynn. Division V : Rene Swindley (captain), Tim Louisson, Chris van Drimmelen, Axel Hansen, Daniel Martinez-Sweeney and Bryce Taylor. Division III team was kindly sponsored by

Council Bar and Café Morrinsville and Division V by Hutchinson Rodway Insurance. THAMES VALLEY MATCHPLAY The Te Aroha Golf Club’s 64th annual Thames Valley Matchplay tournament was played over Queens Birthday Weekend with four divisions of sixteen players taking part. The title of Thames Valley Matchplay Champion for 2013, went to Ewen Dawe from the Manukau Golf Club who defeated a previous winner, Andrew Mackie – also from Manukau – at the eighteenth hole on Monday afternoon. Pictured above are winners Ewen Dawe (Manukau), Michael Conner (Akarana), David Taipari (Hauraki), Chian Ho (Te Aroha). The weekend’s format involved two rounds of strokeplay on Saturday to determine qualifying groupings. While the top sixteen qualifiers then played two rounds of “off the stick” matchplay over each of the next two days, the other three groups played matches on a handicap basis. At a time when most clubs find it difficult to fill fields for tournaments over three

days, the Te Aroha event has remained popular. A special association of friends, as well as a healthy sprinkling of new-comers, again came together from as far away as Blenheim and Whangarei to take part. Former Te Aroha member Doug Atkinson (now at Stewart Alexander) has played

every year since 1975. In a rash after-play moment, he offered to ‘shout’ for everyone if he survives to play his 40th tournament next year. An interesting feature of this year’s results was that although the Te Aroha course tends to favour players who have local knowledge, only five of those who were called to the prize table this year were from the home club.

Pictured are G Marsden, D Farquhar, G Hill, D Gordon, R Vincent and R Swney. The Veteran Golfers Pairs Tournament was also held on Monday, June 11 at Te Aroha, and was a huge success. The Kawerau Golf Club held the annual Harvey Norman 54 Hole golf tournament on Queen’s Birthday weekend. There was a good field with over 90 players taking part, from as far away as Foxton and Whangarei. There was the usual large turnout of players from the Pukekohe golf club, who outnumbered the players from the other eastern bay clubs. There was a huge prize table with 60 prizes for 93 players. Saturday was a beautiful day for golf and almost everyone had a great day, even if there scores didn’t reflect the great conditions. The course was in possibly the best condition it’s ever been in, thanks to all of our hard working volunteers. Sunday dawned a little bit chilly but ended up okay and the scores reflected the conditions. The Junior Division Nett was won by Barry Whata (pictured) with a 197 nett, this

included his final round of 79 off the stick on a 19 handicap (his best round ever). The Junior Stableford winner was Roger Childs from Te Teko with 118 points and the Junior Gross Winner was Merv Cooper from Opotiki with 270. In the Intermediate Division the Nett Winner was Thomas Ratima from Foxton, the Stableford winner was Chas Andrews from Kawerau and the Gross Winner was Paul Timinis from Maramarua. The Senior division nett was taken out by Kawerau’s Glenn Tait, The Stableford winner was Tuakana August and the Gross winner was Pacer McCauley. The Warren Ruri Memorial trophy for the overall Best Nett was Barry Whata and the winner of the Brian Bradley Cup was Glenn Tait for the best overall Stableford. Mention must be made of Rusty Brooke and the boys from Pukekohe who organised a huge amount of golf gear and fund-raising product for our junior golf programme. Over $1000 was raised for the juniors. After 5 years at the helm, Jay Carter has resigned as Head Coach and with 3 Men’s Interprovincial titles under his watch he can be justly proud of the contribution he has made. Contractual arrangements with Waiariki Institute of Technology, Academy of Sport are well underway and this move will see Rotorua Professional Gavin Holder take over the position as head coach of the Men’s & Women’s elite squads. Gavin became a fully qualified NZPGA Professional in 2002 and has worked at

Changes are also happening with the appointment of a CoachForce Officer who will be responsible for coaching volunteer coaches and junior convenors along the lines of the NZPGA Gateway programme that Murray Macklin has been refining as well as the appointment of a Golf Development Manager to implement the Community Golf Initiative that National Community Golf Manager, Kenny Halliday has introduced. Five clubs were asked to sign a Memorandum of Understanding to work on the community golf project and Omokoroa, Rotorua, Taupo, Tauranga and Whakatane have all come on board with this. Golf TRAILS ment played over the weekend was won by Nick Coxon of Hamilton’s Narrows Gold Club by one shot from Mount Maunganui’s Hayden Beard. The tournament is played over 36 holes, with 18 holes played on each of the Mount Maunganui and Omanu courses, and the iconic event has grown in popularity across all divisions. Coxon won the men’s overall gross division with a four-under total of 138, while Hannah Seifert from the Lochiel club won the women’s gross with an even-par 142 score. Aside from playing on two different courses, a major point of difference with the Kaimai Classic is the sought after stableford competitions played. Charlie Smail from Walton, Craig Gibbons from Omanu and Brett Williams form Hinehopu won the men’s stableford divisions, while Brooke Hamilton from Maungakiekie won the women’s stableford division one and Omanu’s Katie Peterson division two. The real contest was in the junior division where there were seven players close together and after the second round three golfers had the same number of stableford points. Eventually Brett Williams from Hinehopu won on count-back. Omanu golfer Aroha Tito shot a superb 68 at Mount Maunganui on Sunday to record the lowest round of the tournament.

PENNANT WINNERS Marton had a very successful day at Foxton on May 12, winning the Manawatu Wanganui Association’s inaugural weekend Pennant competition and Championship Pennant competition. The weekend competition was started to accommodate players with handicaps of 8.6 to 22.1, who are unable to play during the week. It was played in a round-robin format with eleven teams of two players entered. Marton’s team of Di Gilmour and Barb Pratt played Rangatira and halved to win and hold off a strong challenge from Feilding. The Championship Pennant team of Jenny Ritchie and Cheryl Rhodes, beat Palmerston North in the final.

the Cancer Society and will carry their daffodil logo on his bag at the British Open next month. As a co-host of the event at his club, he agreed to face any challenger on the par 3 16th – and there were plenty in the field of 32 teams, who willingly paid for the opportunity to take him on. Every now and then a loud cheer could be heard from the 16th as somebody in the field did manage to beat him but it didn’t matterthe money was already in the hands of the Cancer Society. “There was hardly time for me to draw breath before more challengers were lining up. But it was a heck of a lot of fun and very productive for the Cancer Society,” said Brown as he tried to relax in the clubhouse afterwards. Brown also presented one of his bags and the chance for three players to join him over nine rounds, as auction items. Another pro, Ben Campbell, also made an appearance. He issued a challenge for the players to out-drive him. Reports suggest that Hurricanes rugby player Brad Shields might have done just that. Despite some confident pre-tournament talk, the Harley Davidson motorbike, which was the prize for a hole-in-one on the 18th, was never in any danger of being won.

the Bronze 9 games to 3.

ST CLAIR BENEFITS

A default win by St Clair over North Otago has given St Clair not only three points but also added a valuable six games to the team’s tally in the coastal men’s pennant series. Despite losing two contests in its first four outings, the team now shares a game tally of 19.5 with the unbeaten Otago Blue team and is only three points shy of the series leader. The default also launches St Clair well ahead of Chisholm Park, which began the weekend in third place and only half a game behind St Clair. North Otago has been very competitive this year but an injury and work commitments meant it was unable to field a senior team. However, Chisholm Park must take some responsibility for its position, as it was held to a 3-3 draw with the cellar-dwelling Otago Gold team at Balmacewen. There was a bizarre finish to that contest and all six matches finished with close margins. Play in the US Open was suspended at the end of day two, due to the dark conditions, but there was no such alteration at Balmacewen. The players competed on the last few holes in wet, cold and dark conditions. ”We were using the light from our cellphones to look for golf balls at the end. It was just ridiculous,” veteran campaigner Sean Geary said. It was not a good day for the usually successful Geary brothers. Sean fell to George Wardell on the 17th green, and Kyle was beaten by Otago No 3 John McIntee, who parred the final hole to take the lead. The Park tail wagged and No 5 Antony McCullough beat Craig Lyall 2 and 1. At No 6, Josh Finnie notched his first senior pennant win, at the expense of Balmacewen veteran Murray Edgar. It was left to the final two games and Otago looked to be ahead when No 1 Thomas Gillan accounted for Mark Collie with one hole to spare.
