Martin Davidson New-look open a good omen
ew Zealand Golf’s short game can’t be questioned after it extracted itself from a particularly tough lie in regards to the New Zealand Open. It has pulled off a considerable coup in relaunching the Open in the pro-am format so successfully established by the PGA Championship in the past two years. That the Open totally consumes the PGA event, replacing it at The Hills near Queenstown, is a heavy price to pay but one that arguably had to happen when the future of the Open itself was in serious question. New Zealand Golf somehow posted a loss of $397,000 on the last edition of the Open, staged last year at Clearwater in Christchurch, reviving painful memories of the 2005 and 2006 Opens at Gulf Harbour north of Auckland which shaved $1.2 million off NZ Golf’s strained reserves accounts. The national body found itself boxed into a corner. Further losses were untenable, a future without an Open unthinkable. So, the PGA Championship in its previous guise has been sacrificed, although a 2014
davomedia@gmail.com
tournament will be staged on dates and at a venue unknown but with a seriously diminished playing purse. But, most importantly, the Open is safe, for the next three years at least as it returns to Sir Michael Hill’s stunning course just outside Arrowtown where it was held so successfully in 2007, 2009 and 2010. Crucially, NZ Golf has stepped back from taking financial ownership of the Open so it is no longer at risk of leaking more money. A new agreement has been brokered, leaving Michael Hill Tournaments Limited to take full responsibility for the Open for the next three years. Hill’s enthusiasm for the Open cannot be questioned. The jewellery magnate hosted three tremendous Opens at his course, unrivalled in this country for its spectator-friendly topography, and was upset when NZ Golf took the Open back to Clearwater in 2011.
But much of that had to do with Hill’s fractured personal relationship with Australian tournament promoter Bob Tuohy, who no longer fills an influential role with the Open. Hill’s enthusiasm, deep pockets and genuine desire to create a tournament well above the mainstream, will stand the Open in good stead. You never know. Hill’s direct involvement may see organisers throw some cash around to entice a name player or two, a scenario not countenanced in the past when financial constraints simply left NZ Golf with no choice but to refuse to consider paying appearance fees. Not that NZ Golf can afford to take anything for granted. The Open remains its flagship tournament – and one that must be protected at all costs.

Alker back in the spotlight By Martin Davidson

ithout wishing to tempt fate, there is now the very real prospect of New Zealand having three players on next year’s PGA Tour in the United States. It really could be a case of famine to feast for Kiwis, who are conspicuous by their total absence on the world’s most lucrative tour this season. It comes after Steve Alker thrust himself into tour reckoning by winning the Utah Championship on the second tier Web. com Tour last month. After missing four of seven cuts on the circuit this season, Alker, who had got by on his limited status, came out of nowhere to claim his 10th career title and his third on the secondary tour, previously called the Nationwide Tour. The 42-year-old survived a playoff against Australian Ashley Hall to collect the winner’s cheque of $US112,500 and catapult himself from 149th to 20th on the Web. com moneylist after 15 of 25 tournaments.
That left three New Zealand ensconced inside the top 25 who at season’s end earn their tickets to the big tour for 2014. But while Tim Wilkinson, seventh with $US180,213, and Danny Lee, eighth with $US162,463, owed their prominence to consistent performances, Alker shot into contention solely on the momentum gained by his victory at Willow Creek Country Club. “There’s certainly a chance for all three of us,’’ Alker said after his first victory since the 2009 New Zealand PGA Championship at Clearwater in Christchurch. “Timmy has been playing very well and consistently all year, and so has Danny. It’d be great to get all three of us in there.’’ As for the sudden change in his fortunes, Alker could only offer a rueful smile of someone who fully understands the peaks and valleys of golf’s varied landscape. “It is funny how everything can change in a week,” Alker said after seeing of Hall with a par at the first extra hole. “I was out of the race completely and this win has changed my whole year. “I know that there is a long way to go. I am inside the top 25 now and the goal for me now is to fight as hard as I can to stay there. “It is a quick turnaround for me but that can happen in golf. This does wonders for my belief that I can get there.” Alker and Hall were tied at 22-under-par
262 at the end of regulation and the New Zealander admitted to some nerves heading into the playoff. “You never know what is going to happen in a playoff so you are always a little bit nervous. “Ashley hit his tee shot into the water and had to play three from the tee so from there I hit for the back of the green and tried to make my par. It was a pretty nervy two-putt but it was a nice feeling to see the putt drop for the win.” The scoring had been particularly hot all week, with Alker flirting with a sub-60 score in the second round before shooting a career-low 62, while American Will Wilcox crafted a sublime 59 in the last round to tie for third, one shot outside of the playoff, to become the fourth player to achieve the feat in the tour’s history. But the only numbers that really mattered were those prefixed by a dollar sign and how they translated on the moneylist. “It is a funny old game and a week can change everything so quickly,’’ Alker said. “I am now back in the hunt (for a PGA Tour spot) which is really nice. “But I think the biggest thing for me is getting back in the winner’s circle and getting the juices flowing again.”

t should make for the happiest of reunions when the New Zealand Open returns to The Hills near Queenstown in late February. The latest reincarnation of the storied championship marks a bold, new beginning at jewellery magnate Sir Michael Hill’s splendid, privately owned course that memorably hosted the Open in 2007, 2009 and 2010. Hill was always a touch miffed when New
ViSiT
Zealand Golf took the Open back to Clearwater in Christchurch in 2011 and 2012, and made do by staging the New Zealand PGA Championship in a pro-am format for in 2012 and 2013 in what was meant to be the start of a five-year arrangement. Now, he has got his wish to play mine host to the championship again in a threeyear deal beginning with the 2014 edition on February 27-March 2. New Zealand Golf and Michael Hill Tournaments Limited (MHTL) have retained the pro-am format so successfully initiated
by the PGA, a funding boost from the Government will lift the purse to a minimum of $850,000 and a formal link with the Japan Golf Tour will ensure 15 players from that circuit contest the championship, the winner of which will earn three starts in Japan. As well, the neighbouring Millbrook course will also be used. A minimum professional field of 132 players will play the first two rounds alternatively at The Hills and Millbrook before the second round cut of top 60 plus ties.
www.keankart.co.nz
The pro-am event will run concurrently to the main tournament, with amateurs partnering professionals in a best-ball format. The top 30 pro-am teams will progress to the third round at The Hills and the top 10 will advance to the final round. New Zealand Golf, ever conscious of the strain on its finances, has licensed MHTL to organise and take full responsibility for the New Zealand Open for an initial period of three years. In addition, the parties have agreed to continue to stage an annual NZPGA Championship, initially on a smaller scale. Plans are already under way for next year’s PGA tournaments but the dates and venue are still some way off. New Zealand Golf chairman Paul Fyfe said it was an important moment for this country’s premier golf tournament. “The New Zealand Open has a rich and diverse 106 year legacy and we are excited by the potential for the event to flourish in Queenstown,” Fyfe said. “We believe that this will be a world first for a national open championship to incorporate a pro-am format and it will be an exciting new era for the New Zealand Open.’’ PGA independent board member John Hart, the tournament chairman on behalf of MHTL and who was an influential figure behind the revamped PGA Championship, said this was a landmark agreement by all parties involved. “We are thrilled that New Zealand Golf and the NZPGA have taken a ‘whole of golf’ approach and have recognised that New Zealanders will be well served by having one premier golf tournament that can compete on an international scale,” Hart said. “Specifically, we acknowledge the NZPGA for their foresight in supporting the development of this pro-am event over the past two years, and for accepting that this transfer to the New Zealand Open is for the betterment of the game and the provision of pathways for elite players in New Zealand.” The scheduling change from a late-year to early-year fit means there will be no Open in 2013, as happened in 1990, 1999 and 2008.

Spirits lifted at Rangatira By Martin Davidson
B
oth the bodies and spirits of members at Rangatira Golf Club have been lifted by the return of their famed electric cable car. The car’s reappearance is to be formally celebrated next month but by the time your eyes are cast over these words, members and visitors alike were expected to be enjoying the ride again from the 18th green to the clubhouse. It ends a difficult period for the northern Manawatu club, nestled on three levels beside the Rangatira River just north of Hunterville, after the cable car was shut down on February 25. The forced closure of the iconic car, which had ferried players and their trundlers up a steep incline without incident for 41 years, came after a health and safety inspector followed up a complaint and deemed it unsafe. The small matter of $77,000 later – the cost of repairing the car – and the tourist attraction is back in business, leaving Rangatira members to count their blessings. The final bill, well above the optimistic early estimates of $20,000, has been the blow from left field for the small, rural club. But secretary Lesley Leary told Golfer Pa-
cific NZ that the whole affair had brought the club’s 105 members closer together as they rallied around a common cause. While income from green fees – which average up to $60,000 a year – keeps the club afloat, that income stream fell by about 20 percent over the five months the cable car was out of action. “The green fees are our bread and butter and that’s why this has been such a big blow to us. There had been nothing wrong with it (cable car) for 40 years and then... just boom,’’ Leary said. Rangatira members were far from idle, though. The first in a series of special tournaments in a Save Our Lift campaign was staged on June 9, offering a prize draw of a $1000 gift voucher. The tournament was repeated in July, again on August 11 and finally on September 8 as extra the funds raised are diverted into a fund to pay the repair bill. As well, Rangatira is to hold a blacktie dinner in Hunterville on September 7, where touring professional Mark Brown and former All Blacks fullback Allan Hewson are to be the guest speakers and an auction will be held. The club is confident of meeting its bill repayments with money raised from the above tournaments, plus grants and donations that the club has received by institu-

Leary said the generosity of people had been heart-warming. “We’ve had one substantial grant from the New Zealand Community Trust and other people have made donations and pledges.’’
Leary said the past five months had been a “very frustrating period’’ for the club. “But, in saying that, the whole club has pulled together exceptionally well and the response and support we’ve had from other golf clubs has been overwhelming. “The response has been quite phenomenal.”

Japan: A golf and cultural odyssey

apan is many things simultaneously. This technological superpower with jam packed, non-stop mega-cities give way to mountain vistas, rural serenity, ancient temples and generations of fascinating history, culture and tradition. Rightfully famous for technology and fashion, the land of the rising sun’s rich cultural significance is on display through its food, hospitality, geisha, sumo, karate, onsen and the list goes on. The Japanese are warm and welcoming people whose unique culture can be enlightening in its complexity and contradictions. It can take many years to get a good grasp of the Japanese language and psyche. Hospitality, consideration for others and respectfulness is intrinsic to being Japanese. Possibly more than any nationality in the world, the Japanese love to eat out, and the cornucopia of culinary options, even in the smallest towns, is dizzying. There’s something for every taste and budget, from the oft-excellent, humble workmen’s canteens, to famous specialist restaurants that will satisfy even the most particular gourmets. There are scores of different styles of cooking, and specialist restaurants to match. Spring is an idyllic season to visit Japan and Hanami. The Japanese cherry blossom (sakura) festival is an added bonus. Hanami, which literally means flower
6 GOLFER PACIFIC August 2013
viewing, has been celebrated for many centuries and holds a very prominent position in Japanese culture. The Japanese celebrate that time of the year with hanami (cherry blossom viewing) parties under the blooming trees. From an uneducated perspective, Sumo wrestling may just seem like two fat, barely dressed, guys wrestling. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Sumo is closely tied to the Shinto religion and a professional Sumo wrestler in Japan is considered a “demi-God” by the Japanese public. Arthur Golden’s 1998 novel Memoirs of a Geisha revived interest in an aspect of Japan that is so intrinsic to the Western stereotype and yet so far removed from the reality of daily life here. Geisha do still exist and ply their trade, of course. But the role they play in modern society is minor and, except for the attention they get from camera-wielding tourists, largely unseen. But like their male counterpart the samurai, the geisha and her world continue to fascinate people around the world as part of their image of a mysterious and timeless Japan. Tsukiji Market is a large wholesale market for fish, fruits and vegetables in central Tokyo. It is the most famous of over ten wholesale markets that handle the distribution of fish, meat, produce and flowers in metropolitan Tokyo. The
sight of the many kinds of fresh fish and other seafood and the busy atmosphere of scooters, trucks, sellers and buyers hurrying around, make Tsukiji Market a major tourist attractions. Getting naked, hot and wet with a bunch of total strangers is perhaps the most quintessentially Japanese thing to do. There are thousands of onsen (natural thermal hot springs) scattered the length of Japan, perhaps a bequest from the gods made as a sort of natural compensation for all of the earthquakes. No earthquakes equals no onsens, and the Japanese are in general fairly happy with the trade-off. Japanese golf courses are groomed to perfection and playing a number of the country’s finest courses, coupled with expert caddies, make for a memorable
golfing experience. Course layouts are usually set among heavy pines, while generous fairways with strategic hazards promote risk and reward play. On course, the expression “Fah” is the Japanese equivalent to Fore! There is much to savour about Japanese culture and Go Golfing Travel’s tour delivers exceptional quality, unique encounters, first class golf and a real sense of history through its cuisine and art. Highlights include a private lesson and lunch with sumo wrestlers, a Kabuki performance, private dinner with Geisha, cherry blossoms in full bloom, day trip to Miyajima Island, and golf at exclusive members only Rokko Kokusai Golf Club. McCall (Gore) and Cameron Jones (Muriwai) were 20th and 22nd respectively in Mississippi in an event won by American Bryson DeChambeau. McCall, whose overseas tour had earlier seen him finish runner-up in the Berkshire Trophy event in England, managed a two-under-par total of 278 for the 72-hole tournament, ending up 12 shots in arrears of DeChambeau. Bateman wins EuroPro title Masterton’s Harry Bateman has claimed his first professional victory by winning the EuroPro Tour’s Buildbase Open in England. Batemen carded a final round of three-under-par 69 for a 54-hole total of 12-under 204 to win by one stroke from Englishman Scott Campbell and claim the $16,600 winner’s cheque at Frilford Heath Golf Club in Oxfordshire. A product of PGA professional Jimmy Napier’s junior programme out of the Masterton Golf Club, Bateman had begun the day two strokes behind overnight leader Tom Wilde, an English amateur who finished the week at six-under as one of six players tied for 18th following a final round 77. Despite doing well in quali-
fying school at Frilford Heath in April, Bateman had missed every cut until this event. “I was surprisingly calm,” Bateman said of his final round. “I thought I would be a lot more nervous but I felt the same the whole day from start to finish. It isn’t a bad way to finish when I make my first cut. “I found something just before the tournament with my swing, it was really consistent and I stuck with it all week and putted so well. The greens here were amazing, probably the best I have seen since I have come over to the UK, and I holed everything. “It is a good base to build from quite early in the season. A few more good results and you can get onto the Challenge Tour, so this is pretty big for me.”

Road show a revealing exercise M any of you will be aware that New Zealand Golf is leading a review process aiming at establishing the best administration structure that can support the current needs of the game, particularly at grassroots level. As part of this process, I have recently completed a road show all over New Zealand with NZ Golf chairman Paul Fyfe and it was great to engage with the clubs and district associations that run the game across our country. The purpose of the road show sessions was to offer clubs a chance to share their views and opinions on a number of key topics. NZ Golf and the district associations acknowledge there are major issues facing the game, many of which are at the club and grassroots level of the game. NZ Golf believes that the health of our sport is not as good as we all would like it to be and action needs to be taken. It is clear we cannot continue doing the same things hoping for a different result. The road show encompassed 18 individual meetings between golf clubs, district associations and NZ throughout May and June. Meetings were held in Whangarei, Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Rotorua, Nelson, Greymouth, Christchurch, Timaru, Queenstown, Gisborne, Hastings, Palm-
erston North, Wanganui, New Plymouth, Wellington, Invercargill and Dunedin. These meetings followed the 15 individual meetings held with district associations in March and the district association forum held on April 4. Throughout the country, and across all regions, there was strong alignment on the major issues facing golf clubs. These included financial pressure, membership and participation rates, securing volunteers, competition between clubs and the sourcing of external funding. Among a wide range of discussions the common solutions proposed by club representatives included new membership initiatives that focus on key target markets and new participants, more diverse product and service offerings for golfers, more diverse use of golf club facilities and better collective promotion of the game. The format of the game was raised consistently, with many calling for a much shorter format. Nine-hole golf is a major growth area of our game but it was suggested that many more options and products are needed to meet the changes in society. It was also regularly suggested that NZ Golf needs more successful players on the world stage to encourage people into the game. As part of the meetings, clubs were asked to share their views on the future role of the district associations.
The general consensus was that district associations should be principally responsible for the running of local district and representative golf, the local promotion of the game and the co-ordination of local club communication. The common view around the country was that NZ Golf should principally be concerned with increasing the promotion and profile of the game, more active support of clubs, and the running of national golf matters such as the handicapping system and the New Zealand representative programme. While there are many success stories throughout the golf club network the general feeling around the country is that we all need to adapt and change in order to face future challenges. It was pleasingly to hear that so many clubs felt that it was now more than ever critically important to work together in partnership with district associations and NZ Golf. This has been an incredibly valuable process and we have learnt a great deal. The engagement from the club sector, in particular, has been fantastic with some pretty clear messages received on the issues facing the game and the support desired in the future. We now have some great guidance that will help us enormously as we complete the final part of the review process in association with our district associations over coming months.

COMMENT

Resident Pro at Chisholm Park, Dunedin
How golf courses have improved over a century I n previous articles I have written about 100 years of golf and how the game has changed in New Zealand. This month I want to talk about the role of the golf course superintendent and how golf course maintenance has evolved. Firstly we need to acknowledge the contribution that today’s superintendent plays at providing a wonderful playing environment week in and week out. Being a golf course superintendent (commonly called the greenkeeper) is often a thankless job unless you have a love for golf and passion for your place of work. So please take the time to comment to your green staff at your course about the great job they are doing. They take such pride in their job to produce the best product they can with the budget and machinery they have – and usually with the weather not playing its part.
Golf courses have really evolved in how they are maintained over the last 100 years. Today, most courses have over $250,000 in machinery with a greens mower, tees and surrounds mower, fairway and rough mowers plus machinery for various other tasks around the course. Unfortunately, when golfers watch golf on television they see manicured fairways and courses prepared for tournament conditions and usually at courses that have a budget 20 to 50 times more than most New Zealand courses. Mowing greens was usually done with `walk behind’ mowers until the early 1970s when ride-on mowers (triplex mowers) became the norm. The speed and conditioning of the greens improved with the ride-on mowers. If you get the opportunity to watch highlight packages from tournaments in the 1950s you will
notice how slow and bumpy the greens were. A lot of the good players back then used putters with a little loft to help the ball skim across the green so they weren’t knocked off line early in the putt. The ride-on mowers revolutionised greens mowing, both in regards to speed and being able to mow in two planes, conventional cutting horizontally and vertically (verticutting). The start of irrigation and the invention of the pop-up sprinkler were other milestones in course conditioning. Through the 1960s and onwards, courses started laying pipes and sprinklers so at a flick of a switch the course could receive the appropriate amount of water. This changed the labour aspect of the greenkeeper through the summer who had previously spent his time moving hoses and sprinklers around from one hole to the next.
The knowledge of grasses and use of fertilisers and sprays to improve the playing conditions has also had a dramatic effect on the courses we play. Grasses suited to the climates improve our fairways. Plus, there’s a whole area of research and science which goes into the understanding of the soil pH which ensures that our courses are healthier. Again, all of this knowledge is pulled together and utilised by your greenkeeper. Today’s golf course superintendent is highly educated and knowledgeable. They understand and care for the courses they work on and many are avid golfers themselves and understand what they want from the course as a player. So, remember to `tip your hat’ to them and tell them that you appreciate what they do to make your game that much more enjoyable.

everal families have made outstanding contributions to the game of golf, their clubs and the PGA over the last 100 years. Names like Galloway, Watt, Clements, Smith, Forrest, Maisey, Dyke, McDonald and Owens keep cropping up in the history of New Zealand golf, and the list goes on. It’s hard, though, to beat the record compiled by a father and son combination, who between them have served the Napier Golf Club for 63 years and counting. In fact, the story of Ernie and Kim Southerden is much more than one of long service, because both were outstanding players and teachers of not only club members, but also trainee professionals and top amateurs, starting with their own families. Kim’s son Brett now lives in Australia, but still plays off +1. Daughter Lauree, who holds a double degree in Biomedical science, played at No 1 for Hawke’s Bay for some years and maintains her golfing connection through her job at Boulcott’s Farm Heritage Golf Club. Ernie Southerden was born in the UK and left school at 13 after his father (a fisherman) died, initially working at Rye and Lamberhurst Golf Clubs. Wounded in Egypt in World War II, he later mar-

Shortly afterwards, he met two Napier businessmen, who persuaded him there were good opportunities for a golf professional in Hawke’s Bay, and he and his wife sailed to New Zealand in January 1950, where he started the family connection at Waiohiki. Ernie wasted no time in putting his stamp on the local scene, winning the 1950 PGA Championship at the Christchurch Golf Club. He added two more PGA titles in 1959 (Paraparaumu Beach) and 1962 (Titirangi). He was almost a permanent feature of our Canada Cup (the
forerunner of the World Cup) team, representing New Zealand seven times between 1954 and 1962. Ernie has another little known claim to fame, as the winner of the first Australian Masters title. Most histories record this tournament as starting in 1979 at Huntingdale, when it was won by NZ PGA member Barry Vivian. However, the green blazer won by Ernie back in 1956 for a tournament called the Australian Masters is still in the family’s possession. Ernie continued to work at Waiohiki until a few years before his death in 1996 at the age of 79. By then Kim, who started as his father’s apprentice in 1976, had taken over the business he contin-
ues to run to this day. Kim also fashioned a strong playing record throughout the 1970s and ‘80s when he was competitive against the many overseas stars playing here at the time. He has vivid memories of the finish to the 1977 Otago Charity Classic where a 20-year-old Spaniard drove into the trees on the 18th then shaped a three iron out to the vicinity of the green. Expecting a lob shot, Kim was astonished to see a low wedge chip hit with so much force it seemed to be headed out of bounds, only for it to jam to a halt 30cm from the pin. Severiano Ballesteros won by three shots, and was to continue to weave this sort of magic for the next 30 years. Kim emulated his father by representing New Zealand with Dennis (Yogi) Clark in the 1978 World Cup. He won the 1981 Pacific Harbour Open in Fiji and many tournaments on the local Pro-Am circuit. All in all, a remarkable family whose talents also encompassed course design (Ernie being responsible for Taupo Centennial and several others) and club making from scratch. Thanks to the foresight of those Napier businessmen in 1950, golf in this country is all the richer for their efforts.

NZers bow out in Oregon
T
he challenge of New Zealand amateurs Josh Munn (pictured) and Blair Riordan ended early in the matchplay rounds of the Pacific Northwest men’s amateur championship in Oregon. Munn (Manawatu) was the equal top qualifier after shooting rounds of three-over-par 73 at Bandon Trails and one-over 73 at Bandon Dunes.
But he was eliminated in the first round of matchplay when pipped 2 and 1 by American Kyle Schrader. Riordan, who had qualified 11th with a 36hole score of 150, went one stage further after winning his first round match 1 up over American Justin Wiles. But he dipped out in the second round, losing 4 and 3 to Alex Chiarella, of Hawaii. Photo: Photosport

Campbell wins in US
Otago professional Thomas Campbell has enjoyed his maiden win on one of the mini pay-to-play tours in the United States. Campbell carded rounds of 69, 66 and 67 at the Westwood Ho Country Club to win on the Dakotas Tour by two shots on a 14-under-par 202 total for the 54 holes. The 27-year-old, who studied on a golf scholarship in the US and is now based in Minneapolis, banked $NZ$22,400 for his first win as a professional on American soil. He was rock solid
in the final round. He made the turn in twounder 34 before making four birdies and a bogey coming home to sign for a five-under 67. His two birdies in the final three holes proved vital to holding off the challenge of Americans Jay Myers and Jack Newman. Campbell’s victory continued his hot recent form he had shown on the Dakotas Tour. In the previous three events he had finished tied for seventh at the Bakker Crossing in South Dakota and runner-up at The Bluffs South Dakota Open.

Scott inspires Gold Coast golf tournament inquiry
A
dam Scott’s victory at the US Masters in April is creating record inquiry for participation in this year’s Mitsubishi Motors World Masters Golf Championship to be held in Scott’s hometown, the Gold Coast in southern Queensland, Australia. Peter McCarthy, the managing director of event organiser, Go Golfing, is expecting more than 1000 golfers from around the world to participate in the week-long amateur event, now in its 18th year. “There has been huge overseas and local inquiry since Adam Scott’s win at Augusta,” he said this week. “Many keen golfers want to experience the courses in the region where Adam Scott learnt to play, so this year’s event will be very special.” The Mitsubishi Motors World Masters Golf Championship, the biggest tournament for club golfers in Asia-Pacific, will be held at four Gold Coast courses from October 20 to 26. Open to male and female golfers over 35 with an official handicap, the competition is played in stableford format in 20 divisions based on age and handicap. The private and exclusive Arundel Hills Country Club, arguably one of the Gold Coast’s premier and most challenging layouts, joins other host venues – the Greg Norman-designed The Glades, Jack Nicklaus-designed Lakelands and the new Australian PGA host course, RACV Royal Pines. Peter McCarthy said Royal Pines would be in mint condition for the event, to be held only a few weeks before the Australian PGA, which Royal Pines has secured for the next five years. “Golfers from as far as Saudi Arabia and Poland will join record numbers from south-east Asia for this year’s Mitsubishi World Masters,” he said. “Participants will enjoy Australia’s favourite holiday playground, which boasts 57 kilometres of pristine coastline, surf beaches, vibrant nightlife and 30 golf courses, including eight championship courses designed by golfing luminaries. Success in US for Guo
N
orth Harbour teenager Lita Guo has made her presence felt in the United States. The 17-year-old from the North Shore Golf Club underlined her growing credentials by winning the Killington Junior Golf Championship, an American Junior Golf Association event. Guo, pictured, shot rounds of 73, 71 and 73 at the Green Mountain National Golf Course in Killington, Vermont, to finish tied with American Jennifer Peng on four-over-par 217. The New Zealand representative then prevailed on the second playoff hole to secure her first international title. It continued Guo’s fine season where she has been one of the star turns on the local scene. She secured her first nation-
al title when she carded a oneunder-par 73 in the final round of the Charles Tour’s LawnMaster Classic in Palmerston North to win by six shots. Earlier, she claimed a bronze medal at the Australian Youth Olympics Festival as part of the New Zealand mixed team. Guo made her senior debut for New Zealand team at the Queen Sirikit Cup in Taiwan and was the best of the Kiwis as the New Zealanders finished a disappointing 13th.

Whats New Stay Dri
golferpacific.co.nz
Golfers can now Stay Dri in New Zealand conditions After 15 years experience manufacturing and marketing wet weather apparel into the industrial market, new Stay Dri owner, Chris Morgan, intends to maximize his knowledge to drive the Stay Dri brand back into the NZ golfing scene. As Chris explains, “I bought this business because I saw a product that offers so
many levels of performance in what most would see on the surface as pretty basic item.” Performance features include excellent waterproof protection when you get caught out on the course, extremely high levels of breathability, it is arguably the lightest product on the market and is windproof.
“I believe in it and although I know that this product isn’t for everyone, I am totally convinced that it is the most functional”. Chris sites that the way the garments are made and the type of fabric used, allows the wearer a full range of motion through the swing even in the rain. “The fabric doesn’t hold water because it can’t. Most other
raingear actually gets heavier and therefore restricts the full movement but Stay Dri does just that.... it stays dry!” Stay Dri rainwear is still made right here in New Zealand and is stocked in most parts of the country. Check out www.staydri.co.nz to find your local stockist. If one isn’t close by, you can always purchase off the website.

Ever thought about a South African golf tour?
A
uckland based VSL Events, owners and operators of the Golden Oldies Sports and Vintage Sports franchises, are expanding their VSL Golf division with their initial South Africa Golf Tour next March. The tour, which incorporates seven rounds and luxury accommodation, also includes a three day, two night stay at the prestigious Kariega Game Reserve as the tour opener. Laurie Bunting a director of VSL and the host of the tour said “We have held several large sporting events in South Africa in recent years which also incorporated golf days. Subsequently with our South African partners we have put together an extremely well priced top of the range golf tour. The NZ dollar goes a long way there so it makes South Africa an extremely attractive destination. From a purely golf perspective this tour is the match of anything, anywhere else in the world. It really is the trip of a lifetime. It’s also important that people know that where we’re going and staying it is absolutely safe and we have the people to make sure that our golfers make the most of their South African experience.” All the details are on their website www.vslgolf.org

The tournament offers 4 challenging rounds over 5 days with a ‘rest day’ mid week to enjoy just some of the attractions on offer in the Nelson region. Over the same week non-golfing partners can enjoy the diversity that the Nelson Arts Festival has to offer. Registration for all paid entrants will be Sunday 20th October at Nelson Golf Club. The Club are holding a fund raiser for Nelson Hospice on that day and any entrants to the Festival of Golf are welcome to play in this Ambrose event for a nominal fee on the day. Due to limited numbers for the shotgun start, anyone wanting to play in this event is requested to contact the golf office on 03 548 5029 to book a place – an ideal chance to test out the course. Monday 21st October at Nelson Golf Club – a true links experience playing on some of the best greens in New Zealand. NZ Golf have rated Nelson golf course highly enough to have chosen it as the host club for the NZ 2014 Amateur Championships – an ideal chance to experience the challenges it will offer these top national amateurs. Tuesday 22nd at Motueka Golf Club – a totally different layout will test your game to the full. Beautiful tree lined fairways meander round the course leadPROUDLY Supported by:

The wide and diverse choice of restaurants within the region has to be rated as very high indeed. Thursday 24th – promises another interesting course, at Greenacres GC, the Best Island Golf Course. Situated on the Waimea Estuary, the course offers fabulous views in all directions. The course is another great challenge for all levels of golfers. Friday 25th – return to Nelson for the final round, followed by a wonderful lunch and prize-giving promising a great array of prizes for all divisions and hopefully lots of laughter and banter too. The format will be a 10.30am shotgun start on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday culminating in a final day 8.30am shotgun start on Friday, to allow time for the lunch and prize giving. There will be special offers in the Pro Shops, perhaps you can arrange golf lessons to get you through the week, or a group clinic should

Bowater Motor Group have arranged for multiple cars to be on offer – an amazing challenge – so not just the first person that gets a ‘hole in one’ wins.... but every player who ‘nails that ace’ at the right hole will drive away in a luxury car – something even the Pro Tour rarely offers. The generous sponsors have put up a wonderful prize fund for daily individual prizes as well as overall individual prizes for the week. Team prizes for accumulated week scores. All prizes will be fairly distributed amongst all the divisions giving everyone a chance to win. There will also be optional two’s competitions at each club along with putting competitions, raffles and some lucky draws for all non-winners each day, giving the opportunity for everyone to have a chance of win something. The Nelson region is extremely fortunate to have three such different course layouts within the region and to have this opportunity to can come and play them all in one week, meet new golfing friends as well as maybe driving away in a new luxury car. It’s an opportunity too good to miss. Don’t
put it off any longer, places are filling fast. Go to www.nelsongolf.co.nz/festivalofgolf and complete the entry form now. The Nelson City Council sponsorship funding is through the Nelson Events Marketing & Development Programme. The objective of the programme is to stimulate Nelson’s economy in the Spring Season by bringing new spending through visitors coming to Nelson for distinct events. Their Sponsorship funding will be used for marketing the tournament. As you will in the area, why not also take advantage of yet more golf as Nelson Golf Club is also hosting The Fidelity Life Open Cup – a one day tournament on Saturday 26th October. There are two shotgun starts at 8am and 12.45pm for this single stableford competition which boasts a massive $7,000 prize fund. This is the second year of this prestigious tournament following the huge success of last year’s event. Again, we ask anyone wishing to play in this event to please contact our golf office for further details on 03 548 5029. This Nelson Festival of Golf is a fantastic opportunity for all golfers to be in at the start of what we believe will prove to become a “must do” for all New Zealand golfers and hope you will want to join us in this beautiful part of the world for a week of wonderful golf twinned with spending time enjoying all that the region has to offer.

NORTHLAND GOLF TRAIL BUSINESSMAN ASSISTS TO GROW JUNIOR GOLF AT BAY OF ISLANDS Local Northland man Brady Arkle (pictured) has been a catalyst for improving the Junior numbers and programme at
the Bay of Islands Golf club at Kerikeri. Brady from the Radio Network promoted an idea that would both fund and grow their junior golf programme. Junior Golf numbers 3 years ago had reduced 13 players. Brady’s son Jackson was showing great promise so he got behind the club and developed a system where the club allowed Brady exclusivity to market to local businesses hole signage, which he then sold in conjunction with a great Radio Advertising campaign developed by the late Neil Jenkins, senior creative writer for The Radio Network. As the signage appeared, so did the Radio commercials across TRN’s top rating stations in Northland. Classic Hits, Radio Sport, NewstalkZB, Coast and Radio Hauraki. The benefit to the Junior Golf was that 10% of the revenue from each hole sponsor was donated to the Junior fund. The result is the Club’s Junior programme has over 100 kids of all ages learning to play the world’s greatest game. The commercials on the Radio relayed to people that these businesses support junior golf at the Bay of Islands Golf club at Kerikeri. The club contributed to the programme with sets of junior clubs for only $1 per week hire, minimal outlay for parents, with families and Juniors enthusiastically visiting their weekly lessons from course Pro Arron Bartrum. The fees are also scaled so it affordable for kids from all backgrounds to get a shot. An example of Business and Business leaders supporting local golf clubs with emphasis on Junior Golf.
tournament director Murray), proved his strength to win by four shots from Jason Gulasekharam of North Shore, James Beale who is on a golf scholarship in the USA and Mike Leeper from Omaha who took the Masters trophy for the second year. The Ladies division was won by Samantha Dangen from Whangaroa with last year’s winner, Brittney Dryland from Titirangi in second place. Brittney recorded a best score 69 for the ladies on the white course in her Saturday afternoon round. fitting to put it to this event. Ivan had served many years on the Waipu Golf Club executive and in later years had been the club Patron. He had also been President of Golf Northland. This year the Ivan Bartulovich Trophy went to “The Patron’s Saints” for the best score in the 9 hole Ambrose. The best dressed team was “Ruakaka Supervalue” and the best team name went to “Whiskey Galore” (pictured).
GOLDEN OLDIE HOCKEY/ GOLF TOURNAMENT Pat and Morris Came (and crew) have been organising their annual Ambrose golf tournament at the Wellsford Golf Cub for the last twenty years. From humble beginnings of a dozen teams, the largest field to date has been twenty seven teams (we had twenty two this year). All participants tend to get a prize – which is very encouraging for new (and average) golfers. Part of the tournament’s success is that many (ex and current) hockey families chose to enter en mass and make a day of it. Unique to this tournament is all players tee off on the first with a hockey stick. Closest to the pin wins the Jay Arasoo Memorial trophy (current trophy holders are Lyn Jones and Lincoln Smith). The popular tournament attracts local sponsors and support from businesses as far afield as Dunedin. Pat is tireless in her pursuit of sponsors and her passionate sale of raffle tickets. Money raised from the tournament is invested into junior Rodney hockey and in recent years over $10,000 has been raised to install an artificial turf at Warkworth.
Pictured are Pat Came (Secretary Northland Golden Oldies Association, Brett Illingworth (Chairman of Warkworth Hockey Turf Trust) and Vanessa Guest (President Northland Golden Oldies Hockey Association).

Top North Harbour representative Lita Guo is currently on a tour of the US playing in events to hone her skills. The highlight has been her recent win at the Killington Junior Golf Championship where she won
defeating Auckland overall by 14.5 matches to 11.5. The senior teams fought out a draw (5 all) whilst the Auckland Masters team retained the Ray Lazarus Memorial Trophy defeating their counterparts 5 matches to 3. But it was in the Age Group section that North Harbour flexed their muscles running out 6.5 to 1.5 winners with not one match lost by their Junior team.

NORTH HARBOUR GOLF TRAIL MURIWAI MASTERS The 2013 NH Masters held at the Muriwai Golf Links on the 30th of June was an outstanding success. The club established this special 4BBB event back in 1997. The single round composed of a shotgun start with a capacity field of 116 players. Playing conditions could not have been more perfect for this time of the year, the course was firm underfoot and the weather co-operated with a temperature early afternoon reaching a balmy 18 degrees. The 4BBB Stableford competition was taken out by Colin Whetton and Marc Oliver with 44 points. Individual Gross by was won by North Harbour representative Waka Donnelly with an excellent 73. Individual Stableford was won by Phil Connolly with 38 points.
• AUCKLAND
North Harbour won the overall competition against Northland at Mangawhai at the annual ‘Great Northern Battle’ but struggled in sections against a very determined and strong Northland side. With blustery and wet conditions many players struggled with the conditions. The sectional results were as follows: Senior Men – Northland 6.5 / North Harbour 3.5 Masters Men – Northland 6 / North Harbour 2 Under 19’s – North Harbour 3.5 / Northland 0.5 Under 16’s – North Harbour 2.5 / Northland 1.5 Senior Women – Northland 4 / North Harbour 2 Masters Women – Northland 3 / North Harbour 1 Junior Girls – North Harbour 3 / Northland 1 The strong results from the junior players plus some very tight matches in the other sections meant the hole by hole points system for the overall competition resulted in a win for North Harbour by a margin of 364 points to Northland’s 355.
CEO PENNANT CHALLENGE The Muriwai Nobilo Pennant Team rounded out a superb season on Sunday 23rd of June with a convincing win of the CEO Trophy at Pukekohe Golf Club. This event incorporates the best two pennant sides from the districts of Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty and North Harbour. Nobilo finalists Muriwai and Waitemata contended from the North Harbour region and it was Muriwai who won the overall 36 hole competition (fourball and singles gross stableford). The can now lay claim to being the strongest pennant team from the upper North Island. Congratulations!

Matamata Women’s golf hosted the New Zealand Women’s Foursomes on Friday 12th July for the second year. Thirty six pairs from Taranaki to Northland took part. The forecast wasn’t promising but the day turned out to be brilliant for two rounds of golf. The top six pairings teed off last and after the first round the leaders were The Khoo sisters by one shot (72) from Seifert and Cassidy (73) and a further shot back were the Keh sisters (74). The positions didn’t alter dramatically in the afternoon with the Khoo’s on 73, Seifert and Cassidy 74 but the Keh’s (79) were overtaken by Rica Tse and Sai Ma (76, 75)

was held at the Cambridge Golf Club on a very foggy morning of July 22nd over 27 holes. With 90 starters teeing off in thick fog it looked like it was going to a challenging day. The fog did lift though mid-morning giving us a brilliantly fine afternoon. The young golfers played outstandingly well with some very low scores. Golf TRAILS normal but the scoring proved to be of a high standard, especially with the low handicap players. Recent difficult weather and other commitments saw a number of player from 2012 not enter. A very good response from players form Hawkes Bay, Taranaki, Taupo, Hamilton, Raglan and Muriwai helped to fill the field of 40 players. A disappointing response from the local left handed players. Played in perfect weather on a perfectly presented course the players responded with returning some very good scores. The Men’s field was 31 and the women 10 with 7 being right hand golfers. Leading scores were returned by 9 visiting players. Playing off a 9 handicap and with a new pair of golf shoes, Tony Stowers (Te Aroha) scored and excellent 41 points and followed by 3 other visiting players on 39 ponits-Bill Burt (Ohope) Stan Mathews (Otumoetai) and Wayne Chesham (Ngaruawahia). 38 points were entered from Ken Shea (Raglan) and winner of the Gross with 74, Ken Tynan (Omanu) and John Barber (Remuera). The Women’s field although light with left handed players (3) was led by Christine Sigley (Omanu) with a very good 40 points, well head on the nearest player (Right Handed) Margaret Jensen (Ohope) on 35 points.

The finalist have been found for this winter interclub competition with Opotiki fighting it out for the Laing Trophy and Te Puke having to overcome Kawerau at home to win the BOP Plate.

CANTERBURY WOMEN TO THE FORE IN NZ HOME LINKS On the back of last year’s fine results, Canterbury women members have again performed very well in the nationwide women’s home links competition. Over 13,500 women participated in the various 18 hole, 9 hole and junior competitions. Golfers compete for the national prizes within their own club competitions, and the results are sent to NZ Golf for collating. Russley’s Robyn Cruse backed up Sylvie Williams’s win last year by taking out the Best Gross Cup with a score of 2.2 under NZCR, 0.6 of a shot ahead of Greenacre’s Katrina Manaena. The Waitikiri team of Kate Lagan, Sandra Radford, Julie Sadler and Lynne Fergusson took out the main gong – the National Teams Championship. With a combined score of 20.2 under NZCR, they sneaked past a Huntly team by 0.2 of a shot. The other Cantab winner was Amberley’s Liana Donovan. She won the Coronation Medal with a score of 10 under NZCR. She won by two shots.

CANTERBURY 4BBB CHAMPIONSHIP
This popular winter championship was held in blustery southerly conditions in early July at Christchurch Golf Club. The wind became so strong at one stage that it threatened to halt play, but ironically by 5pm it had died down to a mild zephyr. The conditions rewarded patient, good shotmaking, and confident putting. Locals JJ Love and Aaron Pablecheque won the men’s title with a fine 65 in the conditions -two strokes ahead of Jordan Bakermans and Jacob Roberts. Christchurch Golf Club rounded out the placings with a third to Karl Kitchingham and Peter McDougall. In his victory speech, JJ thanked Men’s Rep Manager Rod Hayes for support in recent months through the men’s senior rep training programme. Always a talented golfer, JJ is looking to push his game to the next level and into rep selection. Of course he teamed well with good friend and Woodward Cup partner Aaron Pablecheque who also played very well. Top seeds in the women’s field Elisha Crosbie and Kate Turner were too strong with a 72, winning by a stroke from Nicole Nathan and Robyn Cruse. They played consistent golf in the conditions with few mistakes. Others in the field seemed to fritter shots away, particularly around the greens where any short game insecurities were exposed by the wind and fast greens. The young Coringa pairing of Fiona Gebbie and Hillary O’Connor shot a fine 74 to place third. The Men’s Division One Net was won by the Russley pair of Connell Kilpatrick and Lewis Gillon with 68 on a countback from Jake Hallinan and Jarrod Satherley who also shot 68. The Women’s Net was won by Coringa’s Fiona Rynne and Jan Stupples with 65. Based on handicap, they were the last pair into the field and made the most of it. They were delighted to just be playing having just missed out on the field in the previous two years. Mihee Woo and Ji Young Lee were second with 67.

GOLF TRAILS The Men’s Division Two Net was won by the Waimairi Beach pairing of Matthew Parratt and Isaac Mellish. Again, they were the last men’s pairing into the field but played superbly shooting a gross two under 70 and easily winning the net with a 64. Their gross score would’ve tied them for fifth overall. Runners-up were Jamie Mead and Bradley Wilcock.
LINCOLN WIN PATTERSON CUP The Patterson Cup Final was halved after the finish of the round so the teams had to go to a Sudden Death playoff the numbers were drawn by lot and the # 8,6,5,4,2 had to start from the number one tee. The first to lead off was the # 8’s which Lincoln won on the first Hole. The # 6’s were next and Ellesmere won on the first hole, the #5’s were next and Lincoln won the first hole the #4’s were next and halved the first hole and Lincoln won on the second hole. Lincoln B was then the Patterson Cup winners for 2013, with Ellesmere A runners up receiving the Smart Cup.
BURNHAM WINS BROWNIE CUP The Burnham Team has won the Brownie Cup for the first time since 2009. The team of Dave Kirton, Al Falloon, Clayton Hogg, Gerald Brown, Wayne Cromer and Mike Cole put up a very strong final performance to beat Ellesmere 8 games to 1 in the final round to finish on top of the table with 10 points and 37 games just ahead of Akaroa/Kaituna who were on 9 points and 34 games.
PEGASUS WIN KAIKOURA CUP The finals of the Kaikoura Cup, Templeton Cup and Gardiner Trophy were held recently at Pegasus Golf Club. The Kaikoura Cup saw Pegasus defeat the reigning champions Rangiora 1 on the first playoff hole after matches were tied two all. The winning Pegasus team is Nathan James, James Loveday, Gus McPhedran, Mike Taylor, Steve Pawson, Ian MacGillivray, Rhys Jamieson & Keri Maaka. Kaiapoi B triumphed over Rangiora 2 by 6 - 2 in the Templeton Cup while Composite 1 beat Rangiora 2 to win the Gardiner Trophy.
RICCARTON PARK CHAMPIONSHIP This popular winter championship was held in blustery southerly conditions on Sunday 7 July at Christchurch Golf Club. The wind became so strong at one stage that it threatened to halt play, but ironically by 5pm it had died down to a mild zephyr. The conditions rewarded patience, good shot-making, and confident putting. The field was the highest quality seen in recent years, with 14 men’s pairs balloted out, and pairs needing an average 5.5 handicap index to get in the field. Playing on their home course, JJ Love and Aaron Pablecheque won the men’s title with a fine 65 in the conditions—two strokes ahead of Jordan Bakermans and Jacob Roberts. Christchurch Golf Club rounded out the placings with third going to Karl Kitchingham and Peter McDougall. Runners-up were Jamie Mead and Bradley Wilcock. The Shirley Links were in fine order given the stormy conditions of previous days. The green-keeping staff were kept busy dealing with two large pines that had come down, as well as the multitude of debris that littered the course. The field were privileged to get the opportunity to play on one of Canterbury’s finest, and we thank the club and its members for hosting the tournament.
OTAGO/SOUTHLAND GOLF TRAIL INVERCARGILL’S STRONG START Invercargill Golf Club had a very good start to Golf Southland’s Mataura Licensing Trust Presidents Pennants competition on Saturday, with the competition teeing off at Southland Golf Club (Oreti Sands) and both Invercargill teams taking convincing wins from the day’s play. In section one, Invercargill B beat Greeancres 3 ½ – ½ (D O’Connor def J Hall, C O’Rorke sq D Mills, B Harper def B Geary, B Terry def N Piggot) and Wyndham beat Queens Park A 2 ½ – 1 ½ (B Sinclair lost M Tautari, G Sutherland def T Proudfoot, B Dynes sq P McDonald, R Mainland def S Carroll). In section two Invercargill A beat Queens Park B 3-1 (T McLean lost G Radka, K Mariu def J Osbourne, K Dobbie def E Clark, P Adams def M Mackway-Jones), whilst the Golf Southland Juniors drew 2-all with Gore (L Campion def J Kean, G Brinsdon lost S McCracken, J Hellier lost L Todd, J Morris def G Ruddenklau). The Northern Southland Golf Clubs pennants series took some time to get into full swing, with bad weather earlier this year postponing two rounds of the competition, but it has been back in action of late with the second round played at Waikaia in early July and the third round playing out at Dipton in mid July, The third round was played in fine conditions, with all eight clubs competing in teams of four in a stableford competition. The Dipton Golf Club has its usual challenges of hills and sloping greens and there were said to have been a few comments on the added challenge of Ken Todd’s pin placements on some tricky slopes. It all added to a good day out with the
home team claiming full points – 141, followed by Kingston on 131 and Mossburn 129. Those results mean Mossburn leads after three rounds (398 points), followed by Lumsden (387), Waikaia (285) and Dipton (282). The final round will be played at Kingston on Sunday August 11.
NOMINATIONS OPEN The Southern Turf Managers Association is now taking nominations from clubs for the following awards for 2013: • Best presented course. • Volunteer or Voluntary group of the year. • Trainee/Apprentice of the year. Winners will receive a plaque for their clubhouse. Clubs must have their superintendants registered to the STMA as financial members to be eligible for nomination and nominations can be emailed to John Humphries at sthtma@yahoo.com
ANSTISS WINS JUNIOR OPEN The Chisholm Park Junior Open was held over 18 holes in mid July. Like the Taieri Open, the day before, The Chisholm Park tournament attracted a good field of junior players from throughout the Otago District. Winner was Jamie Anstiss (pictured), Otago GC, with a solid round of 71, finishing one shot ahead of local player, Conor Jamison. Cam Ryder, North Otago, tied with Jamison on 72 and Dylan Stock, winner of the Taieri Open, completed a good week with a 73 for 4th place. Nicholas James, Island Park, took the nett section with a fine round of 82-14-68. Seven players tied for second with nett 70’s.
indicated a strong challenge for senior honours later in the season. Sean Masters, a former Northland rep is studying in Dunedin, having moved south at the beginning of the year. On a plus 2 handicap and now based at Balmacewan, Masters fronted up for his first event since February. His birdie, par eagle finish, for a 76, announced that there is plenty of talent there, even if little has been seen of him on the course in that past 6 months.
MCEWAN TAKES ST CLAIR TO FINAL St Clair No 1 Brent McEwan sank a birdie putt on the 18th green to beat Sean Geary and give St Clair a 3.5-2.5 win over Chisholm Park in the semifinal at St Clair last month. The win pits the defending champion against the unbeaten Otago Blue sextet in next Saturday’s final at Balmacewen. With McEwan and Geary tied playing the final hole, the outcome looked set to be a 3-3 draw which would have given the Park team its first final berth on a countback of holes. St Clair was without three of its regular players – Tony Giles and Clayton More were unavailable, while club stalwart Greg Johnson is at Muirfield, in Scotland, watching the British Open. With three holes to play, St Clair looked certain to take the honours with McEwan 2-up on Geary. But surprisingly, McEwan bogeyed 16 and 17 allowing Geary to win both holes with pars and get back to square. The tightest game was between No 3s Chris Snow and Phil Bungard, which finished all square. Giles and More are available for the final and will play at Balmacewen if selected.

The Taieri Junior Open was held over 18 holes in Mid July. A strong field of 39 players contested the event. Some excellent scoring was recorded by the senior players with Otago’s Dylan Stock and Jamie Anstiss tying for the gross on 71. Stock won the event with a par on the 6th hole, the first hole of a sudden death play-off, after Anstiss, playing an iron from the tee, found the water hazard. Both players have previously played for Central Otago clubs (Wanaka and Queenstown), but have moved to Dunedin to study in 2013. They have clearly settled in well at Balmacewan and are thriving in the competitive environment of Metro golf. Josh Finnie, Chisholm Park, was well in contention until a 9 at the par 5 15th derailed his chances, but he showed plenty of grit to battle on for his 75. In the Under 16 section, Jacob Bleach and Nelson Yorston (both 14 year olds) with 78 and Nelson Yorston 80, show plenty of promise. Another of the young brigade beginning to emerge as a prospective rep player is Queenstown’s Jack Turner (pictured). Son of Greg Turner, Course Designer and former European Tour Pro (now competing on the Senior tour), Jack is sure to be getting some quality tuition to go with the natural competitive nature of the Turner clan.
