ason Dufner’s parents must have privately been delighted when their son stumbled on golf in his teens to add some excitement to his life. The American cut a colourful figure at Clearwater Resort yesterday when he defied buffeting southerly winds to shoot a fiveunder-par 67 and claim the first round lead in the New Zealand PGA Championship. Dufner, 28, and a one-time winner on the second-tier Nationwide Tour in the US, is a curiosity in that none of his declared special interests – among them sleeping, reading, darts and bubble hockey – threaten to get pulse rates racing. While some may argue golf was a perfect fit... Those words appeared in morning newspapers on February 24, 2006, and here we are 7-1/2 years later celebrating golf’s newest majors champion after Dufner won the 95th PGA Championship at Oak Hill, Rochester, New York. Nothing in Dufner’s character has changed since he finished seventh in that New Zealand tournament. He remains laidback in

Each to their own the extreme, expressionless and devoid of emotion. After sinking the winning putt at Oak Hill, he celebrated by half-raising both arms to the height of his shoulders, without even a hint of a smile crossing his facial features. The only hint that Dufner had accomplished something special was when he gently patted his wife Amanda’s rear when they hugged coming off the 18th green. Dufner’s robotic persona is anathema to those who argue golf needs all the help it can get to broaden its appeal; for players to express themselves, share their emotions and remove the masks of indifference they must don to cope with the wild fluctuations of fortune they endure on the course. But surely Dufner is/was only being him-
self. If it suits him to suffocate any semblance of emotion, who is to say he is doing the wrong thing? It really is a case of each to their own. Whatever floats your boat. If it works, don’t change it. For every extrovert like, say, Ian Poulter, there in an introvert like Dufner, even if golf’s latest majors winner seems an extreme case. Back to the press tent in Christchurch in 2006, Dufner bordered on boring when recounting his 67 in tones more suited to someone sharing the secrets to a mathematical equation. Well, his public face remains unchanged all these years later. And, good on him. He is what he is and is unwilling to change to suit others.

New name for club By Martin Davidson
W
hat’s in a name? Plenty, according to Bottle Lake Golf Club. Bottle Lake? It’s the new moniker for the former Windsor Golf Club in Christchurch, which officially changed its name on September 1. It’s the third title bestowed on the course since 1942 when it began its life as Burwood Golf Club before adopting Windsor as its name in 1956. Now, the club has undergone another facelift, and one geared towards name recognition in a region stacked full of golf courses, with 32 of them within half an hour of Cathedral Square in the heart of the city. The rationale for the change emerged from the wreckage of the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes which devastated large swathes of Christchurch. While the Windsor course largely escaped unscathed – save for some minor liquefaction and one or two

reconfigured greens – the club’s membership was hard hit. Fifty-two percent of the membership lived in the eastern suburbs that bore the brunt of the damage and many of that number have been forced to shift, either to find alternative accommodation or to be closer to relocated workplaces. Since 2010, Windsor’s membership has fallen by 110 to its present day 380, leaving officials grappling to find a solution. At a time when club numbers were already dwindling nationally, the earthquakes compounded what was already a difficult situation. Club president Don Brown said at this time last year officials began looking at alternatives. “We found ourselves looking to do something different. To keep doing the same thing is a very common business definition of stupid,’’ he told Golfer Pacific NZ. A push went on to broaden the club’s income streams, not simply raise subscription fees for present members. “We started looking at our commercial partnerships and doing things we hadn’t done before – basically starting on what is now a changed agenda.’’ Very early on in the piece feedback received by club members left them believing few people knew the geographical location of Windsor Golf Club, on the northeastern outskirts of the city. There was no suburban attachment because Windsor School is some distance away and the Windsor shopping complex is no more, thanks to the earthquakes. But within the confines of the course is a 1ha expanse known as Bottle Lake and the club is bordered on one side by Bottle Lake Forest Park, a landmark Christchurch residents know well, hence the new
Bottle Lake 5th green. Photos: Supplied linkage with the club. Members embraced the change of name at a special general meeting in June, and the official changeover was held off until this month for bookkeeping purposes because the club’s financial year ended on August 31. For interclub competitions, the new name will come into effect at the start of the new playing season on January 1. Windsor have long fought above their weight in competition, holding the Presidents Cup and Metro B titles while their women were runnersup in the Nancy McCormack national foursomes this year. The course has long stood alone in a crowded marketplace due to its topography. Unlike many of the flat Canterbury courses, its parklands-style layout, with a par of 70 and stretching to 5450m off the blue tees, is noted for its elevation changes and rolling, undulating fairways. Since the post-quakes slump, Brown said the club had recently began picking up new members who had moved to Christchurch to take part in the rebuild.
www.keankart.co.nz
“After a wave of membership went out we are now starting to see that membership come back. We are about 40 members less than what we should be to be in a comfortable situation. “As people have realised we are doing things a little differently, and realised what we have to offer, we are now picking up people who have come to Christchurch to work in the recovery.” Off the course, more use is being made of the clubroom facilities for functions, which brings in invaluable revenue. As well, positive progress has been made on the sponsorship front, with two companies coming on board, neither of which Brown said would be considered golf-centric. “There was significant cash, up front, with that. It was based on an offer that enabled them to be identified with a club that is going through some change, but also we’ve been able to make a specific marketing offer to their employees for either casual golf or as a membership offer.’’

With second round cuts safely negotiated, Wilkinson came into his own, a third round scoring average of 66.80 placing him second in that category while he was 10th in final round scoring with an average of 69.00. His long-time coach Andre White, of Manawatu Golf Club, reckons Wilkinson will return to the PGA Tour a much more complete player to the one who did not look out of place when he played in the elite ranks for the first time back in 2008. “He is substantially better now, no question,” White told Golfer Pacific NZ. “Technically, he is far more sound. He’s physically stronger and hits it further than he did. He hasn’t lost any of his short game either, if anything he’s gained a bit in that area.” White said the wrist injury which inflicted Wilkinson in 2009 had hurt him both physically and mentally. “It effectively killed two seasons for him. He came back probably too early in 2010, got off to a poor start and just struggled. “Then in 2011 it was not particularly nice because he didn’t feel he wanted to be on the secondary tour. “He began to get his old self back in 2012 and this year has been very, very solid.’’ White backs Wilkinson to make his mark next year but he has never been one to of-

t’s back to business at boardroom level for Tim Wilkinson, one of two New Zealanders returning to the big show for 2014. Wilkinson and Danny Lee earned their PGA Tour stripes courtesy of their high rankings at the end of the regular season on the second tier web.com Tour in the United States. The Palmerston North left-hander was rewarded for an ultra-consistent season, six top-10 results from 15 outings leaving him 10th among the leading 25 players to gain fully exempt status on the top tour next season. The 35-year-old Wilkinson last graced PGA Tour fairways in 2010, while Lee, 23,will also make his return for the first time since 2012 after finishing 15th. There was heartache for a third Kiwi, Steve Alker, who fell agonisingly short of guaranteeing himself a promotion for next year. Alker missed the cut at the last event of the regular season, the Cox Classic, falling from 22nd to 26th on the moneylist with tournament income of $US139,313. The 25th and final spot was filled by American Andrew Svoboda with earnings of $US140,540.
But Alker’s dream of returning to the PGA Tour fulltime for the first time since 2003 is not over. The top-75 players from the web.com Tour and those PGA Tour players who end their season placed 126-200, play in a four-tournament swing called the web.com Tour Finals this month, all boasting purses of $US1 million and ending with the Tour Championship at Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, on September 26-29.. Another 25 cards are available for those with the most cumulative earnings from those four events. But it was Wilkinson’s consistency which most caught the eye this season. It has taken him a number of years to rediscover his top form since a wrist injury cost him his status on the PGA Tour circuit when his medical exemption expired in 2010. He’s clearly back to near his very best now, as reflected in the 2013 web.com Tour statistics. He earned $US216,948, had a best result of second in the Stadion Classic in May, and his scoring average of 69.07 was third best on tour. His short game and weekend play were both immaculate. Wilkinson averaged just 28.45 putts per round, ranking him fourth in that category, while he was tops in scrambling at 69.19 percent.

fer generalised predictions. “Who knows what is going to happen? The men’s game is so deep that the difference between finishing fifth and missing the cut is sometimes very, very small. “One thing I can say is that Tim’s golf is more suited to the PGA Tour than the web. com Tour. “The courses on the secondary tour are not so penalising. If you’re not so much in control of your golf ball, you can get away with it more there than you do on the PGA Tour. “The PGA Tour is more penalising so it rewards better controlled players.’’

ydia Ko delivered a knockout blow to a world-class field as she successfully defended her Canadian Open title last month. The 16-year-old became the first amateur to win twice on the LPGA Tour when she blew her rivals away in Edmonton to vault a projected 12 places on the world rankings to seventh. Twelve months after announcing her arrival at the top table, the North Harbour phenomenon left nothing to chance, closing with a six-underpar 64 at Royal Mayfair Golf Club for a 15-under total. That left her with a five-shot buffer over second-placed Frenchwoman Karine Icher after a stunning closing round that saw her at five-under making the turn before leaving the 18th having required just 26 putts. In her wake Ko left a quality field containing the world’s top 10 players, 46 of the top 50 and 96 of this year’s top 100 current money earners. It was Ko’s fourth win in a professional event following victories in Canada a year ago, the 2013 New Zealand Open and the 2012 New South Wales Open. As well, it marked her eighth top-10 result in professional company this year and immediately sparked speculation that a switch to the pro ranks is quickly approaching. Her coach Guy Wilson admitted Ko’s latest accomplishment would aid that process.

Ko repeats in Canada “We know how good she is, and it’s just a matter of time until she is cashing the cheques. This may make her process in applying a little easier though.” Ko herself played a straight bat to the inevitable questions from reporters at Edmonton. “I’ve always said I was thinking about it, it’s the same answer right now,’’ she said. “Nothing’s changed in the last 72 hours. I’m happy at the moment and I think this win will make us think a little better and make us think what is a good option right now.” Ko has now made the cut in all 14 of her appearances on the LPGA Tour, with her amateur status depriving her of an estimated $1.5 million in prizemoney. Her exploits on foreign soil this year have not ended yet, with Ko entered for the next major, the Evian Championship at Evian-les-Bains, France, on September 12-15, before she returns home to resume her school studies.

Peter Lee could afford a triple bogey on the par-four 16th in his final round en route to a commanding seven-shot victory in the North Harbour strokeplay championship at Muriwai. The 18-year-old from Rotorua carded rounds of 70, 72, 70 and 68 for a 72-hole card of eightunder-par 280 on the testing coastal layout which experienced everything from torrential downpours to balmy sunshine during the three-day event. Lee began the final round level with Hayden Beard (Mt Maunganui), with Tae Koh (Manukau) another four strokes back in third. The Bay of Plenty pair had fought out a playoff in the Bay of Plenty Open a fort-

night earlier when Beard prevailed at Whakatane. This time Beard slipped back in the final round when he signed for a 75 while Lee strung together a remarkable round to claim his third title of the year. Lee, who lost the New Zealand amateur championship final last year at Mount Maunganui, made seven birdies and an eagle on the 12th to go with two bogeys and that triple bogey on 16. He believed the foundation of his win was his first round of 70 when the weather was at its worst. “I played really solid in that first round and that set it up for me,” Lee said. Lee’s win continued his ultra-consistent season. He has now recorded nine top-10 finishes from 16 events in 2013. Lee, who has also
won the South Island strokeplay and Rotorua Open this season, intends to turn professional at the end of the year. Northland’s Kadin Neho, the New Zealand amateur champion and the leading amateur at the Charles Tour’s Muriwai Open in May, finished third on 288. He was a shot behind Beard after carding a 67 in the final round. It was a number matched in the third round by Eddie Burgess (Tauranga), who won the New Zealand amateur title in 2000 at Christchurch, before a closing 76 left him in ninth place on 293.

McCall dips out in US
Vaughan McCall failed to qualify for the matchplay of the US amateur championship in Massachusetts. The Southlander, who carded a five-over- par 75 in the first round at the Charles River Country Club, signed for a 76 in the second round to finish in a share of 182nd place. The first New Zealander to play in the championship since Danny Lee won it in 2008, McCall finished on an 11-over total, seven shots back from the qualifying mark of the top 64 players and ties. The New Zealand representative entered the championship feeling confident after a fine performance in qualifying three weeks earlier in Texas when he carded a five-under 31 on the back nine at the Woodlands Country Club to finish in a share of second and secure his place by finishing inside the top four qualifying spots in the 300-strong field. But he couldn’t find that magic in the main event. McCall made four bogeys and a birdie in the outward journey in his second round and made the turn in 37. He then added three more bogeys coming home to remain off the pace. He finished 17 shots back from England’s Neil Raymond and Australian Brady Watt, who shared the qualifying honours on six-under 134. Lee remains the only Kiwi to have won the championship. Five years ago he was the youngest winner in the tournament’s history, usurping the record of Tiger Woods.

Na’s patience to be rewarded By Martin Davidson
Y
ou often hear groans about the wheels of justice grinding too slowly. Well, the same can be said of any number of infrastructural developments in this country, and those of the golfing kind included. It’s certainly the case with the Whisper Creek course/academy project in Christchurch, which Canterbury businessman Young Hwan (Thomas) Na announced was going ahead a little more than two years ago. Now, it seems a project 12 years in the making is actually going to leave its footprint at Spencerville.
Earthworks are due to start on the site early next year, which will come as a relief for Na, who has reputedly already invested $17 million in the $160 million project, which will feature an 18-hole course, international golf academy, driving range and practice facilities. All going to plan, the course itself is scheduled to open in 2015. The course design work is being shared by Christchurch’s Kristine Kerr, who designed the Pegasus course to the north of the city, and England’s multiple majors winner Nick Faldo. Complementing the golfing facilities will be 141 high-end sections, 131 resort apartments, an
indoor sports complex and a wetlands park. Na expects the golf academy to attract 160 budding golf professionals and put $68 million into the local economy each year. The resort will create 120 parttime and fulltime jobs, including coaches, greenkeepers, and hospitality and administration staff. Originally from South Korea, Na bought the former dairying farmland in two blocks in 2003 and 2009 after receiving Overseas Investment Office approval. He selected the site over other potential locations in Seattle and Sydney, and was granted resource consent after Environment Canterbury dropped its opposition to
the project in 2011. The 6435m par-72 championship course and attached academy will be marketed throughout Australasia, North America and Scandinavia although it is expected most of the student intake will initially come from Korea, Japan and China. Most students attending the academy will be of university age and will train for careers as golfers and/or golf administrators. Na has said the academy will help other local clubs because the students will need experience on other courses. He considered the facility, along with courses such as Terrace Downs and Pegasus, would help make Christchurch an international golfing destination. Faldo, best known these days as an erudite golf analyst, has been quoted saying that he is ex-
cited about playing his part in the Whisper Creek project. “New Zealand is a country which loves sport, and I’m looking forward to adding my own contribution to the country’s sporting culture,’’ he said. “In particular, it is going to be a privilege to play a role in Christchurch’s regeneration (post-earthquakes) after such a difficult few years. “My design team does a huge amount of technical work on each hole and we enjoy getting out on site with the shapers. “Memorability, strategy and the visual ‘wow factor’ are the three things always in my mind when designing a course like Whisper Creek.’’ After such a long wait, golfers from Christchurch and farther afield can hardly wait to see what Na, Kerr and Faldo create.

Cameron Jones has secured his best international result with a top-10 finish at the Canadian amateur championship. The 20-year-old from the Muriwai Golf Club carded rounds of 69, 75, 70 and 68 at the Royal Colwood Golf Club and Gorge Vale Golf Club in Victoria, British Columbia, to finish tied for ninth on even-par 282. The North Harbour player, who broke through earlier this year when he claimed his first national title, the New Zealand strokeplay championship at Paraparaumu Beach, finished six shots back from American Eli Cole. A former recipient of the Michael Campbell Foundation Scholarship, Jones came home strong in the final round with six birdies and four bogeys to climb inside the top 10. His win on the Kapiti Coast at the start of the year was a turning point in his confidence and now Jones is carrying that form on to the international stage. Jones earned 475 world amateur ranking points in the Canadian amateur to climb 11 spots on the world rankings to 332. He is a member of the Institute of Golf on
Auckland’s North Shore which world No 1 amateur Lydia Ko and New Zealand’s leading professional Michael Hendry have made famous through their success. Former Canterbury representative Keelan Kilpatrick and former North Shore golfer James Beale, who are now based in the United States, also had solid weeks in Victoria, finishing in a share of 31st and 57th place respectively. Two New Zealanders have won the Canadian amateur championship – the legendary Stuart Jones in 1967 and Wellington’s Gareth Paddison in 2001.

Hamilton schoolboy Denzel Ieremia has lifted his burgeoning career to new heights with a commanding win in the Cambridge Classic. The 17-year-old last month secured “one of my biggest victories” when dominating the field in the 41st edition of the 72-hole strokeplay tournament. He cleared out from his rivals in the closing two rounds after sharing the lead at the halfway stage. A superb, blemish-free third round of eight-under-par 64 put some distance on the field and Ieremia coolly capped his performance by closing with a 69 for a 16-under 272 total. Ieremia’s third round performance rated as one of the finest rounds of golf played in the 113-year history of the Cambridge Golf Club. Following success at the Waikato age group championship earlier also held at Cambridge, Ieremia’s 64 catapulted him to a five-shot lead, which he comfortably protected. Fellow New Zealand representatives Peter Lee (Rotorua) and Tyler Hodge (Levin) shared second place on 10-under 278. A very keenly contested women’s title was won by 2012 New Zealand amateur cham-

Talented trio inspire next generation
I
t is an exciting time for New Zealand golf on the world stage with Tim Wilkinson, Danny Lee and potentially Steven Alker securing their PGA Tour cards for the 2014 season. Wilkinson, Lee and Alker were all outstanding representatives for New Zealand as amateurs and have earned their cards in different ways. Wilkinson has led the way. The Manawatu pro earned the nickname of “Top 15 Tim” as he racked up nine top10 finishes in an incredible run. He has been the most consistent player on the web.com Tour without a win. Lee, who initially has struggled to convert his longheralded potential in the pro ranks, has quietly gone about his business to get the job done. His return to the big time is well deserved after missing out in qualifying by just one stroke last year. Alker left his run late and at the time of writing is right on the cusp of qualification. The 42-year-old Hamilton pro turned his season around in one week – with his win of the Utah Championship – and it is hoped he can do enough to return to the PGA Tour for the first time since 2003. As we all know, golf is a long-term development sport where talent takes time to grow. Players can take many years to reach their potential, however, for these three players, there is a growing sense their time is now and
they are ready for the big time. Being on the PGA Tour really is the very sharp end of the professional game. Apart from the multi-million dollar prize purses on offer each week, good performances on the PGA Tour see players rocket up the world rankings and become in contention to play major championships. Higher world rankings also enhance the chances of a player representing New Zealand at the Olympics in 2016. As Wilkinson recently told the web. com Tour: “I feel when I get back there I can play well. I’m a pretty down-to-earth person, and I know a lot of players out there. I won’t be overawed by it.” New Zealand has a proud record on the PGA Tour and this trio has the chance to join the seven other Kiwis who have won on the PGA Tour to continue that legacy. But what does this mean for New Zealand golf? Quite simply, it is huge. While it is often hard to directly quantify the impact, it is widely accepted that Kiwis succeeding on the world stage plays an important part in inspiring people to participate in sport in New Zealand. From a golf perspective, Michael Campbell winning

the US Open in 2005 had a major impact on the game here. The profile of the sport grew exponentially and even managed to stop the proceedings in parliament. Lydia Ko is currently having a similar impact as she continues to consistently break records in the amateur game. Next year it is likely that every week New Zealand will have a presence on the PGA Tour television coverage. This will inject new life into the media coverage and exposure of the game here in New Zealand. It will create a buzz in the 386 golf clubs around the country every weekend and inspire new people to participate in our sport. From a purely playing perspective, it provides all New Zealand elite amateurs and aspiring professionals with the belief that Kiwi golfers can make it on the world stage. A generation of young Kiwi golfers will grow up with role models on the biggest stage, much like Wilkinson, Lee and Alker would have done when the likes of Frank Nobilo and Grant Waite were on the PGA Tour. People love winners and to be part of a success story and in 2014 all golf fans will be part of an exciting new era for New Zealand golfers on the world stage.

Top names, top times in NZ
I
n celebrating 100 years of the New Zealand PGA, this article is dedicated to “foreign” major tournament winners who have played golf in New Zealand. The list was originally created by Terry Kelso (the former professional at the Titirangi Golf Club) who met many of these golfers when they played in the Air New Zealand Shell Open. By posting it on the NZPGA Centenary Facebook page, it was quickly contributed to by PGA members, former caddies and avid golfers from around the world. Yes, we all remember Tiger Woods playing in the 2002 New Zealand Open and Jack Nicklaus has been a keen visitor to the country, building Kinloch golf course although he spent most of his time, prior to that, fly fishing the back country. Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and some of the other legendary players came to NZ and played exhibition matches around the country with Sir Bob Charles in the 1960 and 1970s. Terry’s list now features 62 major winners (British Open, US Open, Masters and
US PGA), 12 senior major winners and eight ladies major winners. While this list is pretty extensive, we think there may be a few missing so at the end of this article, I have listed all the names for you to review. Some great stories have come from the Facebook page on who played where and what happened. For example, in 1996, Palmerston Golf Club hosted the NZ under-19 boys’ championship won by Adam Scott. He later came back and played in the Kiwi Challenge. Jason Dufner finished tied for seventh at the 2006 PGA Championship at Clearwater and Bubba Watson played in the 2005 PGA Championship when this event was part of the Nationwide Tour. Many of the recent major winners played their New Zealand golf rounds at the 1998 World Cup at Gulf Harbour or played in our top amateur events. Some household names played in the Eisenhower Trophy in Christchurch in 1990, including Phil Mickelson, David Duval and Annika Sorenstam. Rory McIlroy played at Royal Auckland at the Michael Bollanack
Trophy in 2006 and Justin Rose played in the 1998 NZ Open. The NZ Open always used to host one or two top players each year with the likes of Larry Nelson and Corey Pavin. I remember seeing Jose Maria Olazabal playing a sensational shot at the NZ Open when he played at the Grange in 1986. Many of the top players in the 1970s played in NZ and the walls of the St Clair Golf Club have some amazing photos of Seve Ballesteros, Johnny Miller and others who played in the Otago Charity Classic and the Garden City Classic in Christchurch. Space restrictions do not allow me to write more, but please feel free to email me if you feel we have missed anyone from the list. Could you please add where and when they played in NZ. pro@chisholmparkgolfclub.co.nz Regular tours: Gene Sarazen, Walter Hagen, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Billy Casper, Gary Player, Lee Trevino, Tony Jacklin, Johnny Miller, Hale Irwin, Andy North, David Graham, George Archer, Tom Watson, Payne Stewart, Cur-

Links Hope Island Located just 20 minutes from Surfers Paradise and 40 minutes from the Brisbane CBD, Links Hope Island Golf Course is the centrepiece of Hope Island Resort. With its 5-Star facilities and consistent rankings as one of Australia’s top ten resort courses, Links Hope Island is the ultimate destination for corporate and social golf, functions and events. Your day begins with a friendly welcome from our concierge, and may include a practice session on the aquatic driving range, or a meal on the Legends Terrace. It will then involve some careful strategic thinking while you make your way around the Par 72 course, avoiding the natural and man-made hazards and the 128 challenging pot style bunkers. Heading home after a fantastic day, the signature Par 3 – Hole 17 – is a challenge for any golfer and is an experience in courage or folly. At 230m off
the black tees and 180m off the whites, most players cannot reach the green due to the prevailing head wind. So one must consider playing this par four rather than a par three, but then again, you decide! 18 provides visitors with a fantastic view and although it may be a long journey “home”, there is plenty to see and avoid. The 18th green is surrounded by bunkers and a hollow out front. A challenging end yet it is hoped you’ll not be disappointed. The Club welcomes visitors and there are plenty of opportunities for Public, Corporate and Social Golf Packages to be arranged through the Club. A farmland once home to cows, weeds and bush has been transformed into a beautifully groomed course with lush fairways and meticulously manicured greens. The 6,424 metre, par 72, championship resort layout, meanders its way through 39 hectares of towering eucalyptus, picturesque lakes and serene waterways. Flowering native and exotic trees and plants abound, while ornate bridges cross watercourses in which luxuriant lilies jostle for space. T
he World Cup of Golf returns to Royal Melbourne in November and is likely to attract more than passing interest. For one thing, the criteria for entry and the conditions of the competition will be very similar to those proposed for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. The field will comprise 60 players who will play four rounds of strokeplay (no cut) for $US7 million. Entry is based on world rankings as at September 23, with a maximum of four players from any one country. For countries with more than one qualifying player, a teams competition for an additional $US1m will be played alongside. On present rankings, Michael Hendry will almost certainly qualify, and Danny Lee would be on the fringe of making the field as well. If both get in, that will continue a long association between New Zealand golfers and the World Cup, stretching back to 1954. The Cup itself was the brainchild of Canadian businessman John Jay Hopkins, who saw international golf as a way of fostering international relations, and so in 1953 donated the cup which still bears his name. The tournament was initially known as the Canada Cup, becom-

Our best result under these conditions came in 1967 in Mexico City, with Sir Bob Charles and Walter Godfrey finishing second behind the US pair of Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. Palmer won the individual trophy by five shots, with Sir Bob tying Nicklaus as runner-up. Over the years, New Zealand teams have recorded a series of creditable performances, finishing in the top six on several occasions, including the last World Cup at Royal Melbourne (1988) where Frank Nobilo and Greg Turner tied sixth. “his best shot ever”. Michael Campbell and Smail were in the same grouping, and could have won with a birdie on the last, but with the crowd going nuts after Woods’ effort, Campbell could not convert an 18-foot putt, and we dropped out on the first playoff hole, with the South African team of Ernie Els and Retief Goosen eventually triumphing. Further changes to the rules saw us failing to get a start in 2005 and 2006, breaking our record of participating in every event since the 1954 Canada Cup in Montreal, where Eddie Fennell and Southerden (see last month’s article) were our inaugural representatives. Here’s hoping that record can be continued or even improved on at Royal Melbourne: given the Olympic-style format, and with the event being part of the new PGA Tour, it should attract a stellar field and be a fantastic tournament on one of the world’s top 10 golf courses.

Golf Northland goes from strength to strength
G
Olf Northland continues to increase its focus on sustainability, introducing initiatives to help ensure the long term growth of golf and the 24 clubs in the region. Nearly two years ago The First Tee programme was introduced in Northland to entice more children into golf and combat the aging membership faced by all regions. The ‘9 core values’ of the First Tee programme sets the programme apart from other codes and has seen the programme go from strength to strength with teachers, principals and parents alike reporting positive changes in participant behaviour. The popularity of the pro-
gramme has seen the appointment of Bronwyn Winter as the regions First Tee Coordinator allowing Golf Northland to continue to meet demand as the school programme expands and club based programmes are established. “It has been heartening to see children from the Mid and Far North areas discover the benefits of The First Tee Programme – with help from Social Workers in Schools children from primary schools in Moerewa, Pakaraka, Ohaewai and Oturu have become involved. The second highlight in August was the commencement of clubbased First Tee Programmes at Waipu and Whangarei Golf Clubs with plans underway to start at The Pines and Waitangi clubs in
Term 4. Feedback from parents of our Under 13 Golf Academy squad who have completed Player Level 1 was amazing – one parent said ‘it has changed our lives for the better’ – a true sign of the success of The First Tee.” At club level Golf Northland has embraced the new National ‘Partner Club’ initiative with newly appointed Northland Golf Development Manager Michael Macdonald leading the programme. “There is no doubting the decline and ageing of golf club membership throughout the country, this programme offers clubs the opportunity to identify where they are at, where they want to be and how to get there” said Macdonald who noted this was part of a long term nationwide community golf strategy. Initially five clubs – Kaitaia, Northern Wairoa, Northland,
The First Tee programme, Waipu Girls Waipu and Waitangi are participating in the programme. To begin with the clubs are led through the Sport New Zealand ‘Warrant of Fitness’ by the GDM to get a snapshot of where the clubs strengths and weaknesses lie. A Club benchmark report is then produced giving clubs both quantitative and qualitative information from which clubs will be able to make informed deci-
sions when addressing the key areas of: capability, participation and membership environment, volunteer environment, junior environment and coaching environment. The GDM will then be available to help clubs implement the identified actions and changes. Visit www.northlandnz.com for information, accommodation and activities.

NORTHLAND GOLF TRAIL SPRING STROKE PLAY The 54 hole Spring Stroke play tournament was started in 2002 to host the players who did not make the cut for the Waipu Golf Club’s elite Bream Bay Classic. Played off the Blue mid- distance course this nett tournament is open to all players with a maximum handicap 24. This year’s event is set for the weekend 19th & 20th October and as with the Bream Bay Classic will be the last on the existing course. The new par three hole currently under construction will come into play next season completely changing the course layout. Once again local sponsorship will ensure an attractive prize table. An interesting twist to this year’s competition evolved recently when the major sponsor Ian Kitchen of Northland Real Estate and partner Craig Duffus won the Northern region Pacific Golfer 4 Ball Best Ball competition committing them to head off immediately following his own tournament to take part in the final. With a practice round on Friday and plenty of local accommodation available this is a weekend not to be missed. The clubhouse café is open daily for
meals and visitors and spectators are always made welcome to enjoy great views and congenial hospitality. Entry forms are available on the website: www.waipugolfclub.org.nz or by contacting the clubhouse. Email Waipu@ golf.co.nz, or phone 09 4320259 for more information.

WAIPU’S BEST BALL A great day with a good field and reasonable weather, but extreme winds. The event results were extremely close with two pairs on 44 stableford points and five pairs on 41. Winners Craig Duffus and Ian Kitchen are pictured with organiser Bron Reynolds.
Results:-
1st Ian Kitchen and Craig Duffus on a countback from 2nd Doug Shadbolt and David Hopkins. Two ladies in the field came away with 3rd place on a countback 4 other pairs; 3rd Julie Gordon and Ilsa Alison; 4th Greg Shanaghan and Dave Wistrand.
ELAINE BLEDISLOE TOURNAMENT This last weekend has seen the Waitangi Golf Club host their Annual Elaine Bledisloe 72-Hole Matchplay tournament. The weather behaved reasonably well with two fine days compared with last year’s storm. There was a field of 88 players, the top 8 handicap players with handicaps of 1 – 7 playing in a championship division off the white tees, off the stick. The youngest in this division, 14 year old Brooke Kingi played the eventual Bledisloe Cup Winner, Sjanna Bonnington from Wellsford, in a 36 Hole final. In winning the Bledisloe Cup, Sjanna adds her name to a long list of winners which includes her great-grandmother, Molly Bainbridge who won the cup in 1959, 1960 and 1962 and her grandmother, Jo Bonnington who won it in 1971. Amazingly, Jo is still playing in this Tournament along with her daughter Robyn and daughter-in-law Julie. Her son Alex, is the Waitangi Golf Club Pro so it was a real family affair. There were four more divisions playing 72 holes over the two days with some having to finish games on Sunday morning as it became too dark on Saturday night. The eventual winners of these divisions were: Division Two – Waitangi Cup – Elaine Jordon – Whangaparaoa; Division Three –
Pictured above are winners Jeanne Allen, Betty Southgate, Sjanna Bonnington, Flo Smith, Annette Wallace, and Elaine Jordan. Last year a new division was included for over 65 year old players. This was popular and repeated again this year with a field of 16 players, playing 18 holes each day with a format of Best Nett, Best Gross and Best Stableford over the two days. This Division Six – Paihia Cup was won by Annette Wallace – Wellsford. This Tournament also acts as part of the trials for the Northland Representative Team and it was wonderful to see so many young guns in the top two divisions competing for this right to represent Northland. As usual there needs to be a large thankyou given to the large band of men and women who spent two days, some out on the course, helping run this Tournament and also to our fantastic sponsors.

NORTH HARBOUR WOMEN PERFORM CREDIBLY The North Harbour Women’s team have finished a very credible second in the annual Northern Quadrangular held between Auckland, Waikato, Northland and Harbour. The event was played at Aviation for two matches on Saturday 17th August and one round on Sunday 18th August at Pukekohe. On the first day North Harbour won 6 of the 8 matches against Waikato for a 12-4 victory. In the afternoon match however Auckland proved too strong winning by a margin of 10-6. On Sunday morning however Harbour rebounded to comprehensively beat Northland 13-3. Auckland won the event defeating all three teams. North Harbour has improved on their third place finish recorded in 2012. Well done team!

LEE DOMINATES NORTH HARBOUR STROKE PLAY Rotorua golfer Peter Lee had a triple bogey on the parfour 16th in his final round but still won the North Harbour Strokeplay at Muriwai by seven shots. He had rounds of 70, 72,70 and 68 for a four-round total of eight under par on the testing west coast layout which experienced everything from torrential downpours to balmy sunshine during the threeday event. The 18-year-old Lee began the final round level with Bay of Plenty team-mate Hayden Beard from the Mt Maunganui Club with a four-stroke break to Tae Koh (Manukau). The Bay pair had fought out a playoff in the Bay of Plenty Open a fortnight ago with Beard prevailing. But this time Beard slipped to a final round of 75 while Lee strung together seven birdies and an eagle on the 12th to go with two bogeys and that triple. The foundation of his win was his first round of two-under 70 when the weather was at its worst on Friday. He has won the South Island stroke play and Rotorua Open this season and in-

AUCKLAND GOLF TRAIL OUT OF THE ROUGH The 2nd Winger Subaru “Out of the Rough” fundraiser golf tournament held in late August was a resounding success despite inclement weather. 132 golfers participated with the highlight being a hole in one recorded on Hole 6 by Mike Woods a visitor from The Grange Golf Club. We are very happy to report that thanks to the generosity of our hole sponsors, our participant’s, together with the proceeds from a very successful auction a cheque for $25000.00 was presented to Club President Ross Baigent which will go towards the club’s Building Restoration programme. WAIKATO MASTERS CHAMPS The 36 hole 2013 Waikato Masters Championship, proudly sponsored by Prodrive Golf Hamilton, was held on Saturday, August 17, at the Waikare Golf Club. Despite some very heavy overnight rain and the prediction of more to come on the Saturday the event was played in mainly sunny but windy conditions. A field of 88 men took part with many of them having travelled down from Auckland including a contingent of 16 from Maungakiekie Golf club who have remained very loyal supporters of this event for a number of years. The first round leader was John Gatley from Hamilton Golf Club with a 69 Gross, followed closely by Arthur Parkin and Mike Leitch of Maungakiekie and Brent Fabish of Akarana all on 70. The leading net score was also John Gatley with a 65 follwed by Paul Johns with 67 playing on his home course. Round Two again produced some good scoring with John Gatley again shooting a round of 69 which included 3 two’s. The runner up on the day was John Batley (no not a typo in the name) of Titirangi by lot from Brent Fabish. The overall net winner was Allan Garrick of Waikare with a com-

PATRONS TROPHY About forty Matamata Golf Club members turned out over three wintery Saturdays in a row to compete for the Patrons Trophy. The best combined stableford score over three rounds earns you the honour of winning the Patrons Trophy. Along with the men, there was also 13 year Jack Trower (pictured) who turned up
with a “can-do” attitude reserved for the young. That attitude paid off with a first round score of 45 points launching Jack into the lead. His second week’s score of 35 had Jack leading by only three, but he put the nail in the coffin of the rest of the field with a third round score of 39, making a grand total of 119 – 6 points ahead of his closest competition. Jack has been playing golf since around the age of 9, and is currently on a handicap of 8. Living across the road from the Matamata golf course is certainly a bonus, with Jack spending most of his waking hours practicing, when he’s not at school of course! Congratulations Jack, we shall enjoy watching your progress in future years.
SUCCESS FOR CAROL Katikati golfer Carol Leary (pictured) joined Waihi Golf Club in 2012, transferring from Manawatu-Wanganui District’s Waimarino Golf Club on 9 handicap. After

a short settling down period, familiarising herself with the course, she has gone from strength to strength, and is a wonderful asset not only to the Club, but to the Bay of Plenty Association. In late July at the Ruth Middleton Memorial Open 54-hole strokeplay tournament at Matamata, Carol finished 12th in the Nett competition in a field of 90 top-quality players from Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Manawatu, Wanganui and Taranaki. Continuing her good form, in early August she competed in the Bay of Plenty 72-hole Open Tournament at Whakatane, qualifying 16th of 28 players who made the cut in a field where the highest handicap was 9, and two-thirds were on handicaps between +1 and 4, finishing 17th in the field in the final day’s 36-hole contest. Playing at Taumaranui on August 7 and 8 in a 72-hole Matchplay competition, Carol convincingly won the Championship Division, playing consistent golf over the four rounds. Her success in these competitions has now reduced her handicap by two strokes to 6, and prompting her to trial for a place in the Bay of Plenty Interprovincial 14-player squad from which teams will be picked for the Caledonian Quadrangular

BEARD SCOOPS BAY OPEN TITLE
A course record 61 on Saturday morning gave Mount Maunganui’s Hayden Beard the perfect start for his first 72 hole tournament victory at the Bay of Plenty Open but not before having to fend off a late challenge from Bay number one, Peter Lee. After an opening one under 69 Beard took advantage of the early tee time on Saturday with an eagle par eagle start and got it to 9 under after 14 holes and despite some near misses the 61 second round score gave him a 4 shot lead on 10 under going into the final 36 holes on Sunday from Peter Lee and Otago number one Brent McEwan. Beard struggled to maintain momentum on Sunday morning and it took several miraculous par saves to come in one un-
der. Meanwhile Lee shot 66 to reduce the margin to just one shot going into the final round. Both players had turns at getting their noses in front early in the final round before Lee’s drive on the 9th took a nasty kick to finish just millimetres out of bounds which allowed Beard to take a two shot advantage into the back nine. Birdies at 10 and 12 brought Lee back into the picture but Beard came back with a great birdie at the 15th before Lee shanked his tee shot on the Par 3 16th which allowed Beard to go back to 2 ahead. Beard then bogeyed 17 and 18 to allow Lee to force the result into a play-off back to the 18th tee. Both players found the fairway in the gathering gloom but a superb 2nd shot into the 18th backed up by an extremely well judged downhill birdie putt was enough for Beard to claim victory. The women’s championship did not have the same drama as Wenyung Keh showed her liking for the Whakatane links to claim a 5 shot victory. Pictured above are tournament winners Hayden Beard and Wenyung Keh. Keh starred at the 2011 Toro Interpro-
vincial played at Whakatane going through the week undefeated and an outstanding 4 under 69 on morning proved to be an unassailable lead over rivals Sai Ma and her sibling Munchin.

HOLE IN ONE FOR CROSSAN It took 40 years but New Plymouth Golf Club member Peter Crossan has now crossed it off his golf bucket wish list – the 11 handicapper scored his first hole in August at his home course when he used a five iron to ace the 146 metre par three ninth hole. Crossan went onto record a gross 79 and the feat also completed a Crossan trifecta with older brother Don and younger brother Grant having both achieved hole in ones.

FABULOUS FAIRWAY FASHION Over 100 ladies were wined and dined, and treated to a spectacular fashion show at Hastings Golf Club on August 21. “It was a marvellous evening, fun atmosphere and gave our members the opportunity to check out the latest fashions in golf,” says Brett Allan, event organiser and Hastings Pro. Hastings Golf Club and SpecialTee Golf organised ‘Fashion for the Fairways’ as a unique and memorable night out for their lady members. “Every golfer wants to look smart and stylish when she is driving, chipping or putting. This event was all about looking glam and sophisticated – both on and off the course!” says Brett. “We showcased upto-the-minute fashion trends in golf attire – the designs were hot off the press! The feminine clothing that was on display was both contemporary and sophisticated.” Fashion in golf has evolved significantly in recent years. As a sport which is traditionally steeped in tradition, it has advanced from the ‘bulky and dated’ look to that of ‘comfortable and fashionable’ attire. “With high profile golfers as role models, such as Lydia Ko, the shift is more visible towards trendier and more fashionable golf outfits. It was marvellous that we could showcase the latest fashions in a fun night out,” says Brett. ‘Fashion for the Fairways’ was held in the clubhouse at Hastings Golf Club, overlooking their stunning course. Some lucky
ladies walked away with some wonderful prizes, including hampers and hairdressing vouchers, donated by the event sponsors. Everyone also enjoyed a delicious meal thanks to the talented onsite chef at the club. “We made good sales on the night, and possibly even enticed a few new members to join the club!” says Brett. “The event was very successful for our club’s exposure in the community.” Hastings Golf Club would like to thank their event sponsors; Milton Andrews Hairdressers, Trinity Hill Winery, Grande Gourmet and Hughes & Smythe Pharmacy.
MANAWATU WANGANUI GOLF TRAIL MANAWATU WANGANUI VS WELLINGTON As has been the trend in recent years the Match vs Wellington was played on a very wet day at Levin Golf club in early August. The morning round in the end was very close with the Manawatu/Wanganui Juniors winning 5 – 1 and the Masters winning 4 – 2. A slightly weakened Manawatu Senior line up without NZ reps Josh Munn and Tyler Hodge, surprisingly went down 8.5 – 3.5. The Wellington players were showing some very good form, and clearly did not want to lose the trophy two years in a row. The home women also battled hard but trailed 5.5 – 2.5 after the morning. Some good results from some of the women was very positive, with a battling half by Amber Rose Thompson Newth and wins to Leanne Corbett and Jenny Ritchie the highlight. Emma Clayton also took National Rep Julianne Alvarez to the final hol. The total after the morning was 17 – 15 to Wellington, but still anyone’s match. The Home Junior and Masters teams with the home Senior Men and Women were looking to reverse the result from the morning. After 13 holes the home Senior Men were ahead in 7 of the 12 matches. From Manawatu/Wanganui team Trent Munn and Ewan Westergaard were both all square heading down the last, both had birdie putts holed by their opposition to swing those matches, while Josh Sedgewick and Guy Perry also had their matches swing late in the round to their opposition. In the end the home Seniors were again handed an 8.5 – 3.5 defeat by Wellington. The Wellington Junior Boys team

The Saturday morning foursomes started well for Marlborough with them taking a 3.5 to 1.5 lead over Wellington. Wellington’s only win was from the Miramar combo of Brad Rowland & Ryan Western. Wellington made some headway into the Marlborough lead in the pm reverse singles by winning by the narrowest margins of 5.5 to 4.5. Leaving Marlborough with a narrow 8-7 overnight lead. Wellington needing to win the Sunday am singles by 5.5-4.5 to retain the Marwell Cup and did exactly that with the result not being secured until the last 2 matches on course were completed. KIM RECORDS FIRST PRO WIN Former Canterbury and NZ Rep Dana Kim recorded her first professional win on the Korean LPGA Tour recently. Dana spent her formative golfing years in Christchurch before leaving to pursue a pro career in 2009. Dana Kim stayed true to her vow of remaining cool under pressure last month as the South Korean fired a final round 73 to claim her first victory as a pro at the US$500,000 Kumho Tires Ladies Open in Shandong province. Holding a one-stroke lead going into the final round at Weihai Point Hotel and Golf Resort in the joint-sanctioned event between the China LPGA Tour and the LPGA Tour of Korea, the 24-year-old Seoul native finished at 8-under 208 for a one-shot victory and the US$88,000 first prize.

COURSE SET TO BECOME REALITY The new Whisper Creek Golf Resort in Spencerville is set to become reality with developers saying 18 holes will be playable in three years time. The Nick Faldo/Kristine Kerr design will be a “TPC” international standard course at 6650 metres, but will have five tee blocks per hole to accommodate all players. Facilities will include a two-storey 30 bay practice range building along with a 325 metre driving range. The following is courtesy of sharechat.co.nz: The proposed $160 million Christchurch golf academy and residential resort near Spencerville on the north-eastern outskirts of Christchurch has been given the green light and developers are hopeful that physical work can start in the next few months. While there are still resource consents to be gained, ECAN’s withdrawal of an appeal against the Christchurch City Council’s acceptance of Private Plan Change 45 allows the development to go ahead on the 160-hectare site.

CROMWELL & ARROWTOWN TIED After the winter recess, the second half of the 2013 Central Otago Inter-club competition kicked off at Cromwell last month Cromwell led the competition after 4 rounds and, with the second half of the season starting out on home turf, there was every reason to expect that lead to open up further. However, the home team faltered and allowed last years winners Arrowtown to draw level with 3 rounds to play. Wanaka won the day at Cromwell, catching up some 12 strokes on the leaders and occupying 4th place on the table, just behind Queenstown.

The event was reinstated after a 13-year break, following the success of Brent McEwan and Michael Smith who won the silver medal at the national foursomes event earlier in the year.
