his is my first column for Golfer Pacific New Zealand. I have taken over the editorship of the publication from Martin Davidson who has moved onto greener fairways, so to speak. Let me introduce myself and reveal any possible conflicts of interest. Firstly I am golfer. I’m afraid that means I will be viewing many subjects from a golfing perspective. Here’s a for example: The world is about to end – but please continue to enter your scorecards for handicapping purposes. We want to know what you true handicap was when the world ended. Secondly I am a journalist. One of my favourite newspaper headings is: ``Gamblers’ Anonymous to receive $100,000 grant.’’ This, to me, always conjures up the image of the recipient saying, ``I reckon I can double that grant... there’s this horse in the third at Trentham...’’ Most of my working life has been as a horse racing journalist. I was the racing editor for the New Zealand Press Association (NZPA) for 15 years during which time I covered eve-
pgueorgieff@yahoo.co.nz
Introducing the new editor ry major racing event in this country as well as some across the ditch. I am also trying to recover from the TAB the huge amount of money I have given it as a loan. I was made redundant from NZPA five years ago and a couple of years later the news agency closed down altogether after more than 100 years. Soon after being made redundant I began working at a golf driving range in Wellington. A year later I purchased a share in the driving range which is located at Silverstream in Upper Hutt. Part of the complex is a 9-hole golf course which is affiliated to New Zealand Golf. The golf course is not Pebble Beach and we do not pretend it to be. Its main purpose is for those learning the game and we are happy for it to remain that way. There is no dress code – jandals and singlet are fine. The correct name of the complex is Silver-
stream Golf Park but amongst friends I refer to it as Silverstream International Spa and Country Club. That may seem an exaggeration but we are at Silverstream, we welcome international visitors, we have hot running water (that’s the spa bit), we are in a country and we are a club. I am of course a member of Silverstream Golf Park but don’t mind admitting my primary club is just down the road at Manor Park. I am on Manor Park’s marketing committee and am a captain of an interclub team. I played golf at Manor Park as a child but like so many people gave it away once I started work. Being a racing journalist meant my main working days were Saturdays and Sundays. That ruled out the main golfing days and I basically gave away the game for 30 years. But that’s another story for another column.

Alvarez is saying kon’nichiwa to Japan By Paul Gueorgieff
J
ulianne Alvarez will be brushing up on her Japanese next year. The top New Zealand golfer has her heart set on representing the country in the world amateur teams’ championship, known as the Espirito Santo, which will be staged in Japan in September. The Espirito Santo is held once every two years and this will be the 17-year-old’s first realistic chance of making the New Zealand team of three. Alvarez, with the departure of Lydia Ko to the professional ranks, has clearly established herself amongst the top two amateur women golfers in New Zealand following a stellar year. She has racked up wins in three New Zealand title events of which the latest was the Harewood Open in Christchurch in October. The Harewood Open is amongst the important Charles Tour events and victory at Christchurch had added significance for Alvarez.
The plus two handicapper had won the same tournament the previous year and to win again reinforced that her game was on the right track. ``It helped me gain more confidence,’’ Alvarez told Golfer Pacific New Zealand. ``In the past couple of years I was kind of up there but not able to break through. Now I have not only broken through but I have gone back and defended a title.’’ Weather conditions in Christchurch were very windy and Alvarez said even for a Wellingtonian like herself it made for testing times. ``Branches were falling down and balls were being blown off the greens. I found it tough but playing in Wellington, I guess I was a little more adjusted than others to such conditions.’’ Alvarez’s two other main wins this year were the New Zealand amateur in April and the New Zealand under-19 in September. She also reached the quarter finals of the Australian amateur this year and last month was
2013 NZ amateur Julianne Alvarez. Photo: Photosport named Wellington Young Sportswoman of the Year for the third successive year. Her immediate target is this month’s Interprovincials which are being held at Muriwai in Auckland. Wellington was second to Auckland last year and Alvarez is keen for her team to go one better this time. Also high on the agenda for Alvarez is the New Zealand Open on January 31-February 2. Alvarez played in the event last year, without making the cut. She is
again likely to gain a start without having to go through a qualifying process. If she did make the New Zealand Open field her opponents will probably include Ko. Alvarez is happy to measure herself against Ko. ``I definitely look up to her,’’ she said. ``She’s performing so well. She’s the benchmark and it would be good to perform as well as her – if not better.’’ Alvarez is also keen on a profes-
sional golfing career. ``Definitely. It’s just a matter of when, not if.’’ But for the meantime her emphasis remains on the amateur game with the Espirito Santo a main goal. New Zealand has not won the event but has twice finished second. ``You have all the world’s top amateurs at the same tournament. It would be a great experience.’’ She is already familiar to a couple of Japanese phrases. Without hesitating she was able to reel off the words kon’nichiwa and hajimemashite. Kon’nichiwa means hello or good day and hajimemashite translates to nice to meet you. I was impressed that a teenager was able to easily know these words and asked if she was studying Japanese at college. She wasn’t but had just picked up the words from a couple of Japanese exchange students at her school. It perhaps underlined how Alvarez is a quick learner and perhaps one of the reasons she has succeeded at golf.

Bay of Plenty’s Hamilton wins in Christchurch
B
ay of Plenty professional James Hamilton has delivered one of the best finishes seen in the history of The Charles Tour to win the Harewood Open in Christchurch. The 24-year-old birdied the 17th and eagled the par five 18th at the Harewood course to come from behind and upset tournament favourite Josh Geary. Hamilton, from the Omanu club in Tauranga, scored a two-under par 70 on the final day of the tournament to finish on a nine-under par total of 279 for the four rounds. He won by two strokes and it was the biggest win of his golfing career. Tyler Hodge, from Levin, also scored a two-under par in the final round to take the leading amateur honours for the tournament but the talk of the Harewood clubhouse was the performance of Hamilton. His overwhelming feeling after securing the title in the $40,000 event was one of relief. “I am relived, ecstatic... just stoked,” said Hamilton. “This is a huge moment for me. I have played in about 15 of these [Charles Tour events] and to win one is an unbelievable feeling.” The former Bay of Plenty repre-
sentative drew level with Geary with his birdie on the 17th after Geary had birdied the par 5 16th. “I was feeling good on the 18th tee,” he said. “I was just telling myself to cool off a bit. I was pretty pumped up. I just kind of relaxed and got back into it.” Hamilton delivered the championship defining shot when he hit his approach to the 512m par 5 18th to around 22 feet and set up an eagle chance. His putt on the last, which was met by a huge roar from the sizeable gallery when it dropped, will be his standout memory from his breakthrough win. “I rammed it. It was never going to be short. I said that to myself. It was awesome to see if go in.” Hamilton will have to change his plans for summer. He had intended to take the next five months off golf to get back into work and then rebuild in an attempt to qualify for the Euro Pro Tour. Hamilton paid tribute to his mentor Geary, who helped him as a youngster with golf clinics in the Bay of Plenty, and said he was the benchmark for his game. “He was really unlucky today,” he said. “Beating someone like Josh means that I am on track. I don’t know what else to say. He has been
Geary was disappointed to miss a good opportunity but he paid tribute to Hamilton for his finish. ‘’I was impressed with the way he played the last two holes. He bounced back really well to have a birdie, eagle finish. I hope that he pushes on from this win and does something good in the next few weeks. He played really well under pressure and hopefully now he will be on his way.”

He lipped out at least five times throughout the final round and conceded it was just one of those days. “That is golf,” Geary, 28, said. “I actually played pretty solid. I had five or six lip-outs, some of them pretty bad ones, just nothing was dropping.”

Kiwi physio helps Queenslander to Auckland pro-am win
ueensland golfer Karen Pearce has an Auckland physiotherapist to thank for her victory in the Anita Boon pro-am at North Shore Golf Club in Auckland Pearce, who had been the overnight leader, scored a two-over par 74 to win the $35,000 36-hole event by four shots. The tournament was co-sanctioned for the first time with the Australia Ladies Professional Golf (ALPG) Tour and New Zealand Professional Women Golfers (NZPWG). Pearce, who suffered a hip injury in the opening round, turned up the morning of the final round expecting to withdraw from the tournament. She was directed to local physio Brad Takai, who works out of the nearby Institute of Golf facility, and as a result Pearce was not only able to play, but hit the ball with more freedom than in the opening round. ``Honestly, I thought there was no way I would be able to play today. But he was fantastic and it really freed me up,’’Pearce said. The former regular on the LPGA and a winner on the ALPG tour mixes her time as
both a golfer and a tennis player. She was part of the Australian over-35 years team this year. “That’s probably where I got the injury playing a little too much tennis but I love both sports and in fact I am probably more passionate about tennis because I am still improving at it.” Pearce headed across the Tasman mainly for a check on her golf game. “I had not played a tournament for a while and needed to know what I have to work on with the big events coming up. So I guess this result is very encouraging. “I enjoyed the week. It is an excellent golf course, it was very well run and New Zealand and Auckland is a beautiful place.” Starting her round on the third hole, Pearce mixed five bogeys with a birdie and an eagle on the 18th which proved the turning point. “There was no way I could have made it in two yesterday but because I had the hip freed up, I hit two full shots in and made a good putt.” Second in the tournament was 24-yearold South African-born Kiwi, Jenna Hunter after firing the final day’s best round of even par 72. She finished on six-over 150.
Hunter, who completed her professional traineeship at North Shore Golf Club, made five birdies and five dropped shots in her round. ``I played really well today and made a lot of birdies,” Hunter said. “I just need to concentrate on not making the small mistakes like I did today. ``I am very pleased with today in my first big women’s professional tournament and hopefully now I can do well and be playing on the LET (Ladies European Tour) next year.” Three Australians shared third place on seven-over 151 comprising last year’s winner Katelyn Must, rookie professional Ashley Ona and Vicky Thomas, ahead of compatriots Adriana Brent, Tamara John and Jody Fleming one shot back. Young New Zealand professionals Stacey Tate (North Harbour) and Jess Guenzerodt (Christchurch) rounded out the top 10. The event was established in 2009 as the first all women’s pro-am in this country in memory of former New Zealand representative Anita Boon who passed away from ovarian cancer. The tournament, promoted by the New Zealand Professional Women’s Golf, includes a range of female profession-
als and former tour players, club professionals and teachers as well as amateurs.

Aussies complete Wairakei double
A
ustralians completed the double at the New Zealand men’s mid-amateur and women’s masters’ championships. For the first time both events were held together with this year’s venue being the Wairakei Golf and Sanctuary in Taupo. The women’s masters, for those aged 30 and older, was won by Jacqui Morgan from the Monash Golf Club in Sydney. Morgan, winner of last year’s Australian masters, had rounds of 81, 77 and 78 in the three-round event to distance her rivals. There was a gap of 14 shots to the second-placed Trish McBride from the Waikato club of Ngahinapouri. Four shots back third was the tournament’s 2010 and 2011 winner Kathy Olsen from Maraenui in Hawke’s Bay. Other prominent scores included Rahira Ellison (Shandon) who was fourth overall and the winner of her age group, with a score of 255, and Debbie McCallum from Te Ngutu, one shot behind on 256. The defending champion Eleanor Hodson (New Plymouth) won her age group and was sixth overall with a tally of 257. The men’s event, also for those aged 30 and over, was won by Mark Boulton from Phillip Island Golf Club, south of Melbourne. Boulton had scores of 79, 74 and 75 to win by three shots from defending champion Stuart Duff (Hastings). Equal third were Michael Ursin from the Manor Park club in Wellington and Hughes Diego of New Caledonia. Next year’s tournaments will again be held at Wairakei.

New thinking required for NZ golf to prosper
A
lbert Einstein once said that ``we cannot solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them”. Those words from the science legend are probably fitting as the golf administration bodies in New Zealand contemplate the future. As we head quickly towards the end of 2013, it is clear that the game of golf faces many challenges and it is my view that we need to change our approach in order to create a prosperous and sustainable future. We cannot keep administrating the game in the same manner if we wish to achieve better results. With this is mind, New Zealand Golf is looking to the lead the way in a number of areas. A discussion paper, entitled The Way Forward, is now being considered by district associations and clubs. It will evolve over the next few months to ideally become the blueprint for effective golf administration and support for our clubs throughout the country. The review process is underpinned by a desire to provide more support to the grass roots of the game. While we will debate the various ways this can be funded and structured, it is my view that we must reach an end position that eliminates the inefficiencies of the current administration structure and provides a coordinated administration delivery structure that is fully aligned under one strategic direction. If we can achieve this result, I am confident we will
14 GOLFER PACIFIC December 2013
be able to deliver meaningful support to our member clubs that has a positive impact. As we develop this thinking and undergo the review progress, we have started to invest strongly in the club golf area with our national community manager Kenny Halliday making a good impact in this space. Kenny, with a team of experts from ANZ bank, recently staged a national club seminar series which was titled Reducing Your Club’s Handicap. The series looked at the ways ``we have always done things” and questioned them with relevance to the club’s financial position and their point of difference. Another great club initiative underway is a national group-buying scheme NZG started in partnership with group-buying facilitator GSB. Already in just a few short months over $35,000 has been saved by clubs with the savings growing each month. For those involved in the club administration network, you will have recently seen our general manager Dave Mangan and marketing manager Jan Rowsell as they visited clubs around New Zealand to discuss the upcoming LOVE Golf membership campaign. This new promotional initiative will see golf and clubs
promoted and marketed on a nationwide scale with greater impact through economies of scale. The details of the campaign have been met with outstandingly positive feedback and we are confident this initiative will make a big impact when people from all walks of life share their love of golf as the promotional activity unfolds. You may have spotted the LOVE Golf campaign first being seeded in the now highly popular ``kogoespro’’ video with Lydia Ko and All Black Israel Dagg. Our young Kiwi golfing superstar showed what can be achieved when you do things differently. Her announcement that she was turning professional in a YouTube video released on twitter was bold statement and one that has been met with widespread approval. More than 100,000 people have already viewed the video around the world and many sports journalists have praised the initiative saying it was the ``coolest way to make an announcement of that scale.” As we move into 2014, NZG is focused on doing things differently and we expect different results. It is going to be a great challenge and we are up for it. We all need to take new steps towards building a prosperous future for the game we all LOVE.

Resident Pro at Chisholm Park, Dunedin
Local pro at the grass roots of NZ golf
O
n Friday, November 8, the New Zealand Professional Golfers’ Association held its centenary dinner and what a night of celebration it was. Looking around the room, I would struggle to add up the years of golfing experience and the number of golf titles won. Obviously, the legendary Peter Thomson, winner of five British Open Championships, (guest of the NZPGA) and our own Sir Bob Charles led the way with tournament wins and stories. Personally, what I was more impressed with was the recognition of the 40-year and 50-year membership in the NZPGA, of some of our local club professionals. I was fortunate to be sitting at a table with Bob Doms and his wife, and it illustrated to me the many unsung golf professionals that have really made a difference to the game here in New Zealand. Those professionals were and are working at small golf clubs, teaching and growing the game at the grass roots level. These golf professionals didn’t do it for the money or fame, but did it because
they loved the game and wanted others to have that same love for the game. Thanks to the book, History of the PGA, written by Jim Wallace, I learned that Bob Doms became a member of the NZPGA in 1955 and served the King Country golf community from his home in Taumarunui. He spent most of his career running a sports shop in the town and was officially involved in the golf course for 45 years and in 1962, he was the club captain and club professional. When I look around the list of PGA members that were recognised with 40and 50-year certificates, I took note of the
service that these golf professionals had contributed to the game. They didn’t necessarily play the world’s great golf tours and win thousands of dollars or a shelf of trophies, but they grew the game in this country. How many golfers that are reading this column remember their first golf lesson? I bet it wasn’t taught by a famous tour player but provided by the local professional who really understood the game and was able to show you how to improve your game. These are the same people, on a dayto-day basis, that answer your questions or provide that piece of advice to reduce three-putting or who show you how to hit

crisp chips. Your local golf professionals are active at growing junior golf in the community and trying to grow membership at your golf club. I remember my first junior clinic that I attended in 1979 at the Miramar Golf Club in Wellington. Bob McDonald, the golf pro at the time, taught us to putt and chip and from this first introduction, I was hooked on the game. Today, I am always excited to see golfers arrive at the golf club that I helped to get into the game. So, my plea to golfers around the country is to take a moment and say thanks to your local golf professional for being at your club or driving range and helping golfers become better players. If it wasn’t for golf professionals like Bob Doms and others of his era, golf in New Zealand wouldn’t have the player base it has today. And yes, it was great to see the NZPGA recognise Bob on the same stage as Peter Thomson and Sir Bob Charles. They all deserve recognition for services to the game of golf.

T
he Professional Golfers’ Association of New Zealand wound up its centenary celebrations with a dinner attended by over 200 guests in Auckland last month, including a number of local and overseas golfing celebrities. A highlight was the presentation of awards to members with 50 years or more service to the PGA. They were Dennis (Yogi) Clark, Bob McDonald, Terry Kelso, Robert Doms and Sir Bob Charles but topping them all was Stuart Cox (represented by his daughter Sally) with a staggering 63 years of membership, spanning nearly two-thirds of the PGA’s first century of existence. The achievements of this remarkable group have been covered in previous columns, but it was fitting that they and the nine 40-year members who preceded them were publicly acknowledged on the night. The evening also honoured two great Australian golfers who are both members of the World Golf Hall of Fame, and who both made immense contributions to golf in New Zealand. They were Peter Thomson and Kel Nagle. Both were granted honorary membership of the PGA of New Zealand. Peter

A night to remember Thomson recalled that his first trip to this country had been triggered by a discussion with Bob Glading (also at the dinner, now aged 93) who had persuaded him to play in the 1950 NZ Open at Shirley, where Bob was the head pro. In those days the trans-Tasman crossing took nine hours in a flying boat from Sydney to Auckland. Thomson came and duly won the first of nine Open titles he was to win over the next 20 years, together with five PGA foursomes victories, and one PGA championship. By the year of his last title, he also had five Open Championships under his belt, and was the only man to win three in a row last century. So we all owe a debt of gratitude to Bob Glading, because without that conversation 60 odd years ago, the history of golf in this country may have been quite different. Sadly, Kel Nagle was unable to travel to receive his award in person, which was accepted on his behalf by Mark Gibson, president of the PGA of
Australia. Presentations were also made to the PGA by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, represented by the Rt Hon Sir Thomas Gault, and the PGAs of Europe, and Great Britain and Ireland, with chief executive Sandy Jones in attendance. Sandy captured the spirit of the occasion by reflecting that if golf could be packaged in a can, the four letters of golf would stand for “Great opportunities – lifelong friendships”. He also neatly summed up the role of the PGA professional over the years by noting that although the amateur golfer and club member was the lifeblood of the game, the PGA professional was the heart of the game and the golf club – the pump at the centre that keeps the lifeblood moving. His last presentation left the PGA of New Zealand with an interesting dilemma. In 1901, the PGA of Great Britain and Ireland commissioned a special whisky blend from Johnny Walker to commemorate their own centenary that year. By
Five-time British Open winner Peter Thomson (right) receives a preseentation from Geoff Smart, president of Professioinal Golfers’ Association of New Zealand. Photo: Supplied 2011 only four bottles remained from the original cask. Two were presented to the PGAs of Australia and Canada, which reached its centenaries that year. One is reserved for the PGA of America, which will reach that milestone in 2016. The other Sandy presented to the PGA of New Zealand at the dinner. The burning question is of course when should the bottle be opened, or given its rarity, should it be opened at all? It’s quite possible that decision may have to be deferred, and who knows, it could well form the centrepiece of the 200th anniversary of the PGA, and round off an evening to truly remember.

Sweet success for Sugar Valley’s Geoff Quill
G
eoff Quill (pictured) from Sugar Valley, a little 9 hole course north east of Sydney, won a new Mitsubishi car just for playing in the World Masters Golf Championship on the Gold Coast. Billed as Australia’s biggest and richest amateur tournament for club golfers, Geoff was among the 700 participants that came from every state and from as far afield as Russia, UK and Asia to join the 18th annual Mitsubishi Masters. One of the events great traditions is the major prize draw during the final night gala presentation dinner. This year there were 10 prizes with a total value of $50,000, including a Mitsubishi car as the top prize. Ten entrants are drawn to come on stage for a second draw that sees players leave with prizes increasing in value. Finally it came down to Geoff and first time entrant Allan Meehan from Kurri, NSW to see who would win the car. When Allan’s name was drawn out for second prize, a $6,000 golfing holiday to Thailand, Geoff knew he had won the car. “My golf was average so I didn’t expect to win anything. I still can’t believe I won the car.” The Mitsubishi Masters is open to all male and female golfers aged 35 plus and competition is played in age and handicap divisions with organisers pairing you with

lenge, inspire and woo the most discerning of players. In a sweep from north to south, we feature the very best New Zealand has to offer.
The Grange
Cape Kidnappers
Founded on the current site in 1924, The Grange Golf Club remains one of New Zealand’s premier parkland golf courses. The testing Par 70 layout has seen 8 New Zealand Opens held at the Club, and a variety of other top National events. A combination of tight dogleg fairways, fairway and greenside bunkering, lateral and water hazards and perimeter out of bounds creates a a tight layout where careful placement of drives is critical. The greens are large and well contoured, again requiring well thought out approaches to leave the ball under the hole. Come visit The Grange..it’s only 25 minutes from downtown Auckland and 15 minutes from Auckland Airport. Better still, come and talk to us about joining this great golf club Phone the office on 09 2789777, email office@thegrangegolfclub.co.nz, visit our website www.thegrangegolfclub.co.nz or visit facebook.com/ thegrangegolfclub.
The sister property of Kauri Cliffs, Cape Kidnappers is just 25 minutes from Napier in Hawke’s Bay. Designed by legendary golf architect Tom Doak, the Cape Kidnappers par 71 golf course measures 7,119 yards (6,510 meters) and will challenge golfers of all skill levels. Completed in 2004, our spectacular New Zealand golf course has been hailed as one of the great modern marvels in golf, ranking it well inside the world’s top 100 courses. In 2008 and 2009 Cape Kidnappers and Kauri Cliffs hosted the Kiwi Challenge, our PGA TOUR Challenge event featuring four of the top PGA TOUR players under the age of 30. Hunter Mahan won the 2008 event, beating Anthony Kim in a playoff. In 2009, Anthony Kim was victorious in a playoff over Sean O’Hair. It is the second of Sir Julian Robertson’s unforgettable gifts to New Zealand’s golfing landscape.
Titirangi
Wairakei Golf and Sanctuary
Terrace Downs
An inner-city gem, Titirangi is one of the very best metropolitan courses in the country. In the west of Auckland, it is the only Alister MacKenzie designed course in New Zealand. MacKenzie’s designs are admired for producing holes that offer an ideal balance of risk and reward and after designing Titirangi in 1927, he went on to design some of the world’s top courses, including Augusta, Cypress Point and Royal Melbourne. In recent times, millions of dollars have been invested in an upgrading programme, confirming Titirangi’s reputation as one of the best golf courses in New Zealand. The par-70 course features elevated tees, rolling fairways, challenging bunkers and greens with pronounced undulations. Its par threes face the four points of the compass so no matter what the weather conditions, you experience a different test on each hole.
Long regarded as one of our premier venues, Wairakei Golf and Sanctuary near Taupo is everything it is built up to be. Established in 1970 as a green fee facility rather than a club facility, the course is open to all who are passing through. Wairakei Golf and Sanctuary is firmly established on both the domestic and international golf radar, having been rated by the prestigious US Golf Digest magazine to be in the top 100 courses in the world outside of the United States. A par-72 it plays to 6444m off the blues tees in an amphitheatre setting surrounded by thick forest. A magnificently memorable layout with numerous dog legs, elevation changes and scenery to die for. It is part of a 180ha wildlife sanctuary, native birds abound while 200 mixed colour pheasant and a small herd of fallow deer are being reared on site, within a deer-fenced area.
Very handy to Christchurch, arguably this country’s capital when it comes to the number and variety of quality golf courses of offer, Terrace Downs won the 2010 World Travel Awards as New Zealand’s leading golf resort. Perched on the edge of the spectacular Rakaia River, the resort boasts stunning high country views up to Mt Hutt and is within close proximity to various ski fields. The par-72 6440m championship course includes 11 lakes and 70 bunkers with something to test even the most experienced golfer. Players will remember every hole, use every club in their bag and eagerly anticipate the next day’s play. Possibly the most exhilarating hole is the diminutive par-three 16th which plays to just 130m from the back tees. It’s not the length of this hole that stops you in your tracks, it’s the scenery. The tee box hangs on the edge of the gorge and towers about 200m above the Rakaia River that tumbles along below.
Just 30 minutes from Kerikeri in the Bay of Islands in Northland, Kauri Cliffs has gained a worldwide reputation for its incredible panoramic views as much as its quality golf offering. While the majority of holes hug the coastal bluffs, the remainder of the course features beautiful inland holes that wind through marsh, forest and farmland. Designed by American David Harman, the 6510m par-72 course overlooks the nearby Cavalli Islands and is consistently ranked among the top 100 golf courses in the world. While out of the way, it is well worth the effort to visit, with accolates such as a 2013 number 74 ranking by US Golf Magazine for best golf course in the world; and a 2001 ranking of best new international course by the same magazine. You won’t be disappointed.

Millbrook
Queenstown Golf Club situated on the Queenstown peninsula, surrounded by the rugged Remarkables and on the shore of the beautiful Lake Wakatipu. This 18-hole course will give you reason to pause and soak in the scenery. You have the lake on three sides and the craggy Remarkables on the other, with Coronet Peak and the town behind you. We have 4 different tees, catering for all abilities and welcome visitors to our course year round.
Very close to Queenstown, a magnet for tourists all year round, Millbrook opened in 1992 and was originally designed as 18 holes by Sir Bob Charles. In 2010, the new Coronet ninehole course was added and four of the original holes were redesigned by Greg Turner. For 2014, Millbrook will Co-host the NZ Open. The course suits every type of player and there are five tee options to choose from. Club tees for both ladies and men measure 4450m and 5410m stretching back to tournament and professional tee for the longer hitters. Millbrook prides itself on the condition of the course during the golfing season, with fairways beautifully stripped and true, smooth greens. The course rewards the straighter hitters and if you stray from the shorter grass, the long brown top rough and bunkers definitely make up for the lack of trees.

Come join us in Waikato for an unforgettable experience. Visit Te Awamutu
Te Awamutu is a pretty course easy on the eye (and the legs) with narrow tree lined fairways more undulating on the back nine than the front. It is a course that requires “Triple A” accuracy and on its longer par 4’s big drives. Six of the par fours average 380 metres in length, which means two big shots to reach those greens in regulation. There may be a little let off on the two par fives which average 450 metres, but there are also two big par threes at 194 metres and 175 metres. The long and short of it … a course of contrasting lengths and contrasting colours. It’s a popular stopover for golfers from Auckland Waikato and Bay of plenty regions promising tranquil satisfying golf and always a welcome in the clubhouse and bar.
Thames Golf Club
Thames is the Golf Club you pass on your way over the hill from the big city to the Coromandel summer playground. They’re the Coromandel Peninsula Club with the open fairways and available tees. The ideal time to try the Thames course is on the NEW YEARS OPEN on January 2, offering great prizes (including a Mitsubishi car for a hole-in-one on ten), and great facilities for a fantastic day out. There’s also twilight every Wednesday from 4pm, Saturday scrambles and lots of green fee opportunities. For more information call the club on 07 8689062.

len and Brooke Hamilton but then proceeded to win the sudden death playoff. Local Peninsula members Graeme and Denise McGregor were the Nett Winners on the day with a total of 133. Southern Quadrangular
Congratulations to Ryan Leslie and Sjanna Bonnington who are the 2013 champions of the 20th annual North Harbour Mixed Foursomes Championship. The tournament was held at Peninsula Golf Club on the 20th of October and comprises of 36 holes of stroke play. After posting a total of 146 for the two rounds Ryan and Sjanna were tied with Josh Al-
North Harbour for the first time hosted the 2013 Southern Quadrangular at North Shore Golf Club on November 2nd and 3rd. The event is normally held in the Nelson area but as the North Shore Golf Club is hosting the 2013 Men’s Interprovincial it was agreed that the teams of Christchurch, Tasman and Wellington make the trip north to get a preview of the course. The three associations along with North Harbour were presented a course in truly superb condition and some excellent golf was played over the three rounds of match play. In the first round Harbour would lose a tight battle to Christchurch 4.5 to 3.5 and then also to Wellington 5-3 in the Saturday afternoon round. After some soul searching and discussion with strategic coach Jacques Nortje and team advisor Scott
Johnson the team would come back firing in the final round to record a dominating 7-1 win over Tasman on Sunday morning. Tasman was looking to win the title after they had defeated Christchurch on Saturday afternoon but North Harbour was determined to make a statement. Ultimately Christchurch and Wellington shared the trophy while North Harbour claimed third spot. Of consolation was that the team recorded the most individual match wins over the 3 days. The hard work continues as we head towards the December Interprovincial tournament in what looks set to be an epic battle between the districts from around the country.
9 Hole Provincial The North Harbour 9 Hole Women’s Provincials was held on Tuesday, October 22, and was a great success with almost 90 players competing on the day at the Waitemata Golf Club in Devonport. The Best Gross Winner was Joy Holdsworth (Whangaparaoa) and the Runner up Sala Bishop (Warkworth). The Best Nett Winner was Margaret Moverley (Waitemata) and the Runner up Best Nett Julie Cullen (Pupuke). Congratulations to the winners. To top a great day off Di Bates from North Shore scored a ‘hole in one’ on the 4th hole, well done Di! Pictured below is 9 Hole Provincial winner Joy Holdsworth with president Sandie Jennins (left).
day at Peninsula where she holed out on the 13th hole on the 17th of October, The second time she achieved the feat was a club day on the 2nd of November. It was achieved on the same hole (number 13) with the same club. Number 13 is not always unlucky! Maureen has a 33 handicap and while her husband Jack is very proud of his wife’s recent achievement he must wonder when his own special shot will come as he has never recorded a hole in one of his own! Well done Maureen!

Marrowthon success Gareth and Layne Shepherd would like to thank everyone who donated to their Leukaemia and Blood Cancer NZ Fundraising efforts, which culminated in the pair playing 100 holes of golf at Wairakei Golf Sanctuary on October 18. It was a fantastic day with an early start – registration and breakfast at 6.30am with a 7.30am shotgun start. They started on the very picturesque Par 4 6th hole with the format of playing one ball on every hole and 3 balls
on the par 3’s so, effectively, each round played was 26 holes. In order to beat the 5.30pm ‘curfew’ they had to complete 4 rounds in under 10 hours – i.e. complete each round in 2½ hours – albeit in a cart but they were fair racing! Gareth and Layne finished 101 holes in 9 hours 40 minutes to be done by 5.10pm with Gareth shooting 423 and Layne shooting 455 for the 101 holes! Gareth finished with 9 birdies and Layne had 8 in a little side bet between the two. A special note has to go out to 2 golfers who participated in the event who actually walked it all and completed 100 holes in an amazing 10 hours & 15 minutes. There were 40 golfers participating in this wonderful event and everyone had an awesome day with fabulous Taupo weather. The goal was to raise $5000 and Gareth and Layne raised $5688.78 in total. They were overwhelmed with the support received – so thank you to everyone who contributed. The grand total raised for the Marrowthon was over $119,000, which is an awesome effort. The money goes straight back into local communities as it helps LBC to continue to work supporting blood cancer patients and their families across the country. Well done to all involved!
JAMES LAW CUP SUCCESS Hosted by Golf007.co.nz, James Law Auckland Chinese Cup was played at Akarana Golf Club on November 14. There was a huge turnout, with over 100 Chinese players, along with players from Hong Kong, China, Taiwain and Malasia, making this the biggest Chinese-based golf tournament in Auckland so far. This year a group from China won over the defending champions from Taiwan, by a small margin. Jimmy Zou and Julie Liu won the Nett #1 for men and women, and each received a holiday for two sponsored by Kauri Cliff Golf Club and Millennium Hotel. The lucky prize draw was for a Samsung

Galaxy S4, sponsored by Telecom Auckland Business Hub and a one-year full membership from Akarana Golf Club. There was also a huge prize table worth over $15,000 from sponsors Osim uPaper and uSqueeze, BNZ Golf accessories and JYP face cream. Manager of Golf007.co.nz, Simon Cheung says he will continue to host this event for the Chinese community annually.
BAY OF PLENTY GOLF TRAIL Classic win by Koh It was a perfect weekend for golf for the 36th Omanu Classic held on the 16th & 17th November. After three rounds there were five players in contention but Tae Koh (Manukau) made the Classic his own with a superb 65 in the final round. He started the final round one shot behind, but played a bogey free round that included seven birdies to run away from the opposition. After picking up birdies on the front nine par fives he established what was an unassailable lead with further birdies at eight, ten and eleven. As opposed to previous Classics where the eighteenth has always produced drama, Koh sealed his win with yet another flawless birdie playing down the middle and one putting to leave all in his wake. He finished on 278, 10 under par after starting with a solid 74 on his first round. Koh’s playing partners, Peter Lee (Springfield) and Charlie Hillier (Te Puke) could only watch as they played solidly, but not with the string of birdies produced by Koh. Lee started out well with two 69’s in each morning round, but faded a little each afternoon to finish on 283. Hillier shot into contention with a fine third round of 67 to lead going into the final round, but like Lee consistency was not going to win. He finished second equal also on 283. Compton Pikari (Te Awamutu), the defending champion and Ho Jung Sung (Hamilton) also shot under par on 285 after playing four consistent rounds, but without that brilliance shown by Koh. Again there was a strong ladies field entered and it was Joanna Kim (The Grange)
who lead the field home with a four round total of 296. She lead Chantelle Cassidy (Tokoroa) by three shots going into the final round which quickly dropped to two. But try as she may Cassidy could not bridge the gap from her playing partner and Kim maintained her two shot lead through the final nine. Omanu’s hope Alanna Campbell played solidly to beat the chasing pack and finish in third place. The course was again in superb condition, but the speed of the greens surprised the players with only Lee breaking par in the first round.
72 HOLE MIXED FOURSOMES Mike and Laurel Flattery (Mount Maunganui Golf Club), won Group 1 of the Pacific Coast Village 23rd 72 hole Mixed Foursomes Tournament and claimed the “Stanley Cup” for the second year in succession, adding to the 2008 win. Very fitting that Mike & Laurel should receive the trophy from the new manager of Pacific Coast Village, a position that Mike held up until early 2013. Held in perfect weather and on an excellently prepared course 64 pairs went in to 72 holes of head to head combat. Foursomes being one game that can bring out the best!
Pictured are Ian Nicholls (Club President), Bruce and Yvonne Oxenham (Group 4 winners), Jenny and Derek Beard (Group 3 winners), Laurel and Mike Flattery (Group 1 and Stanley Cup winners), Bruce Fleming (Pacific Coast Village Manager), Roz Tayler and Wayne Ashworth (Group 2 Winners). Pleasing to have new players in the event and special welcome to those who return each year, especially Ann Matenga from the Milton (Otago), the Te Moni’s pairings from Ngaruawahia and other regulars from Auckland, Coromandel and Taupo. The putt-off provision to decide a tied match was used numerous times, indication some closely fought handicap matchplay contests. Seeding by combined handicap meant for nothing as none of the winners were in the top 5. An enthusiastic field of players who enjoyed some great golf and the associated

camaraderie that is associated with this Foursomes event, made possible through the continued sponsorship of “Pacific Coast Village”. Div 1: The 13th seeded Flattery’s had first to overcome 4th seeded A & R Te Moni, previous winners and regular high performers, then another local pairing of Vantol/Noel before meeting and winning over White/ Meade (Mount/Hamitlon) in the finals. White/Meade proved too good for the M & R Te Moni (Ngaruawahia) also proven good performers, to move on to move the Cho’s (North Shore) to the Flights and followed up by beating the Kirsopp’s (Te Awamutu) (who eventually won Flight 1). Div 2: Winners, 6th seeded Wayne Ashworth (Mount)/Roz Taylor (Waiheke Island) won over Newson/Baker (Mount), then H & M Drost followed by the Shaws (Mount) before defeating another good Mount pairing of Jim Uden and Sandy Long. Uden/Long as 12 seeds, had to defeat Payne/Young pairing before confronting a colourful Mount pairing of Ward/Winhoven and then dismissing P & C Pratt (Whangamata) to a flight. Div 3 Leading out as a win all, the 10th seed pairing of Derek & Jenny Beard (Mount) won over the Bain’s (Fairview), defeated the York’s (Remuera), (2012 Group winners), before taking out the win over the McRobbies (Maramarua). The McRobbie’s as the 10th seed pair followed a similar trail defeating Mount
pairings of the Winstanley’s then another Mount pair, B & V Peter’s before sending the B & G Thomson (Hamilton) off to the Flights. No 1 seeding John and Julie Sheridan fought through to a Flight 4 win. Div 4. B & Y Oxenham (Matamata), a 12 seed pairing, started with a win over the Bezer’s (Otumoetai), then sent Jopson/Cameron (Mount) to the Flights before doing the same to Uden/Fielden (Mount/Omanu). Then a win in the final match over the Akarana pairing of M & J Hannan. M & J Hannan, as a 6th seed pair, managed a win over 11th seed A & S Cornes (Matamata) leading on to another win against the pair of G Hendrickson & L Irving. On to the Jenkins/Palmer pair (Mount) who the sent off to the flight only to meet the eventual winners

Te Puke welcomes 4 Day Vets The week of November 11 to 14 saw 4 days of mixed Vets showing off their talents in a mix of events, ranging from combined stableford to American and Canadian foursomes. The club had 16 campervans on site for the week, and hosted 38 pairs in the annual tournament. The golf course, just south of Te Puke on the Whakatane highway turn off, is looking fantastic, and the greens are almost back to their slick best after renovation week in late October. This lack of numbers did not restrict the players from some excellent scoring, (six scores of 40+ stableford points) – a feature of the Mount Maunganui Course so soon after coring.

Masters triumph The Bay of Plenty Masters well and truly got rid of their “easy beats “ tag at the Freyberg Masters Tournament played at Coringa. Not many years ago the Bay were cellar dwellers but manager/selector/ organiser/ motivator -Ross Fowler took responsibility of this team and the improvement has been very apparent and although their previous best effort was 7th they were all quietly
confident of performing well this year. If ever there was an example of how success can be achieved with hard work, good planning and a great team culture this team showed just that. Only one player had played the Tower in their younger years and that was a one off event so it was natural that they should fly under the radar. Ross assembled a squad of 9 Masters who all worked extremely hard all year to ensure they peaked when it mattered. The 5 chosen to play the Freyberg were: Darryn Lowans (Omokoroa) Blair Murdock (Tauranga) Steve Heberley (Whakatane) Tony Hewlett (Omokoroa) and Jason Madden (Mt.Maunganui). The Bay only lost one match during the week and a vital Round 9 victory over Southland kept them in the hunt and with all the other contenders watching their backs and then self-destructing at the business end, they sneaked through for their historic victory.
eight straight Hot on the heels of the Masters victory the Bay of Plenty Men’s team won the Garrard Shield for the 8th year in a row on the Lochiel Course at Riverside Golf Club. This was no pushover with the match against Waikato going right to the wire. After the neighbouring districts both achieved wins over Auckland and Northland, Waikato went into the match with a half a match advantage so the Bay knew the needed 4.5 points to retain the shield. Early on things seemed to be favouring the mooloo boys but the first sign of things to come was number 8 Charlie Hillier who fought back from one down to sink a 3 me-
tre birdie putt on the 18th and gain a vital half. Karl Knedler and Victor Janin were soundly beaten but William Howard and Brad Kendall secured wins and Sam Davis put the Bay noses in front with a 5/4 victory over Compton Pikari. Bay captain Hayden Beard fought back to gain a crucial half with Denzel Ieremia and Peter Lee was 2 down on the 16th tee against Nick Coxon but won the 16th with a birdie and was conceded the 17th after a wayward Coxon drive to be all square playing the last. With both players holding birdie putts on the 18th the halved match was enough to take the shield back to Tauranga.

GOOD SCORES BY VETS For Mount Manganui Golf Club, the feature of the week is the really good scoring by the men vet members. Robert Lunn and Kevin Laylor won the South African Sta-
bleford competition with an average score of 6 points per hole. Both players scored over 40 points with Robert Lunn playing to his age. The next day, playing against some of the low handicappers, Kevin Lalor stole the show and the prize by winning the Shootout. Taking on board the advice of his Thursday partner, Kevin kept to the fairways and was consistently looking at at least par for a hole. A net 2 on the 3rd par 4 hole was only a warning sign that he was on a mission. Then on the weekend following, Robert Lunn, playing in the early Mixed Christmas event, while Kevin rested, played under his age for the 2nd time in 4 days. His 43 stable ford points saw him finish 2nd = with fellow Men Vet players around him. Brian Peters (44), Ken Davis (43), Rex Ferris (41), John Keate (40), an indication that the week belonged to the really experienced golfers.
Mount Maunganui launch TWILIGHT GOLF Although the season was due to start on FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1, the organisers of Mount Maunganui’s Twilight Comp, Col-
leen Noble and Lyn Irving, decided to “Get in the Swing” with a 12 hole event was held on Sunday, October 20. With a very good field of over 50 players and equally pleasant weather, ensured a very enjoyable introduction to the new season of 2013/2014 Twilights. Main sponsor “BAYLEYS” was in attendance to play in the golf day and to announce their continued sponsorship of the twilights. An excellent effort was displayed by Colleen Noble, Lyn Irving and her team of assistants (including husband Dennis). Despite recent coring there were some breathtaking scores, proving that you do not need to be a great golfer or have perfect greens to return low winning scores. The highlight of the day was an impressive 3 under gross score by Terry Mooney.

Eight out of 26 women scored and average of two points per hole – playing to their handicap. But, 14 of 21 men played to their handicap. Inglewood golfer Kerry Otene (66-62128) was in a class of his own at the Taranaki men’s Champion of Champions event played at the Waitara Golf Club last month. The plus one handicapper shot a total of six under par for the 36 hole tournament to claim the senior champion of champions title by a massive eight shots over defending champion Aarun Langton (70-66-136) from Opunake. Jamie Reid (69-68-137) from Fitzroy was a further shot back with a trio of players – Daryl Baird (68-71) from Kaitake, Tony Cawley (70-69) from Stratford and Tim White (69-70) from Hawera on 139. The intermediate title went to Brad Gibbons (76-74-150) from Stratford with Richard Hamil (73-80-153) from Manukorihi finishing runner-up. The junior title went to John Bishop (82-83-165) from Eltham, who finished three shots clear of Bob Cave (84-84-168) from Stratford. The Vinn Young trophy for the best club aggregate net score went to Stratford (Tony Cawley 68-67, Brad Gibbons 65-63, Bob Cave 64-64-128) on 391, with Opunake (Aarun Langton 6965, Chris Cathie 67-61, Snoz Hamilton 6974) second on 405.

Taranaki finish Third The Taranaki men’s golf team finished third at the Central North Island Quadrangular tournament played at the Taupo Golf Club last month. The eight strong side was thrashed 7 ½ – ½ in the opening round by Bay of Plenty and then went down 4 ½ to 3 ½ to Manawatu -Wanganui in a close match with three games being halved. In the final round Taranaki beat Eastlands 6-2. For the Taranaki side Kerry Otene was unbeaten at number five with two halves and a win while Tyla Otene (no 4) and Sam Jones (no 6) both had two wins. Earley/Llyod Combination
Future of Golf on the up!
Fitzroy golfer Mike Earley teamed up with Jill Lloyd (Wairakei) to win the second division of the New Zealand Mixed Foursomes championship played at the Taupo Golf Club over Labour weekend. The duo won the seeded foursomes matchplay title when they beat Jayden MaCrae and Caroline Appleton (Shandon) 4/3 in the 18 hole final.
MANAWATU WANGANUI GOLF TRAIL Ben lands hole in one Ben Anderson from Feilding Golf Club is a 19-year-old golfer playing off a handicap of 2. This month Ben showed his skills with an Albatross aka Hole in One on a Par 4. Walking to the tee block, Ben suggested, “This pin looks accessible!” He decided to take on the dogleg, 308 metre par 4, by cutting the corner and smashing it over the trees. On walking up to the green, with no ball in sight, his playing partner jokingly said, “It might be in the hole!” Ben strolled towards the hole, eagerly anticipating a hole in one and there it was – a Hole in One.
Hodge Sportsperson of Year Levin’s Tyler Hodge has been named Manawatu Junior Sportsperson of the year for the second year running at the annual awards last Friday evening. This year Tyler won the World left handers champs in Turkey, competed for NZ at the 10 nations cup, and had a handful of top results in NZ Order of Merit events, including a thrid and best Amateur at the recent Harewood Open, a Charles Tour event. Currently a New Zealand Elite Academy member, Tyler has a goal of turning professional during the next couple of years. Manawatu’s Josh Munn was a finalist on the Sportsperson of the year award. Josh has had a very successful year representing New Zealand, and won the prestigious Lake MacQuarie Amateur in Australia, and was the medalist in the Pacific North West Championship in the USA, and got his name on the trophy previously won by

The future of golf in Manawatu Wanganui is looking promising after our 12 person Junior team won the annual Eagles Quadrangular at Pahiatua last Sunday. The event is played against Hawkes Bay and Wellington, in a handicap stableford tournament format. Teams are made up of boys and girls with the top 6 between 5.0 and 10.0 handicap and the bottom 6 between 10.1 and 18.0. Any players that are outside this range play off a reduced handicap to qualify for the event. This years team was very young, with all players aged between 10 and 16. Pictured, Left to right are, back, Fergus Smith (Wanganui), Jamie Connell (Manawatu), Steven Bamford (Manawa-
tu), Euan Scott (Palmerston North), James Scott (Palmerston North), Khalil Peta (Foxton), Josh Logan (Palmerston North). Front, Anthony Ilton-Maher (Foxton), Tara Raj (Wanganui), Kaleb Idemaru (Manawatu), Sam Smith (Manawatu), Katherine Paskins (Palmerston North).
Senior Team 2nd at Central North Island Quad The Manawatu Wanganui Senior Team finished 2nd in the Central Nth Island Quad played last month. On day one the team convincingly took care of Eastland 8 – 0 in the morning, before a very tight match against Taranaki ended with a 4.5 – 3.5 margin. Five of the eight matches went down the final hole, the difficult Par 3, 18th hole measuring 210m into a breeze. Of those five matches three players won the final hole, and the other 2 were halved, for the team to take out the match, so it was very close and could have easily gone the other way. Josh Munn’s par down the last to his opponents bogey, earnt Munn a half for the team win. This meant that a win on against a very strong Bay of Plenty team would secure a
rare win at the event. BOP however is consistently the best performed team in NZ over the past decade, winning the Interprovincial on a number of occasions, including last year, when they defeated us in the final, after a playoff to decide the title. They comfortably beat both Taranaki and Eastland on day one, dropping just half a match for the day against Taranaki The Juniors also had the similar equation on after defeating Eastland 3 – 1 and tying with Taranaki 2-2. BOP were undefeated on day one. With both Manawatu Wanganui and BOP senior teams feilding a mix of both international players, and players with lots of Interprovincial experience, the match was always likely to be close and so it proved. Hayden Ring continued to show his strong matchplay ability by coming back from 4 down after to 5 to record a 3/2 victory. Hayden was unbeaten for the weekend, just to remind selectors of his matchplay consistency before the naming of the Interprovincial team. Mike Birchall and Jack Leenards, playing at 8 and 6 respectively were defeated in their matches leaving the top 5 players having to win 3.5 matches. Trent Munn had a good win over former international player Brad Kendall, however Junior Tatana was not at his best and was comfortably defeated. Lachie McDonald was playing some very strong golf throughout the weekend and was looking very good throughout his match against Victor Janin. However late in the match the BOP player holed 2 long bombs (putts) sending the match down the last where Lachie failed to match his opponents up and down, to finish all square. This meant both Josh Munn and Tyler Hodge required wins. Unfortunately an out of bounds from Tyler Hodge on the 17th meant his match ended there, meaning BOP were going to claim victory. Josh Munn however produced a brilliant chip in for a birdie on the final hole to defeat fellow NZ rep Peter Lee 1up, which was a victory Munn was determined to achieve. In the Junior matchup BOP proved slightly too strong for our young players winning 3 – 1. Josh Sedgwick played some great golf to defeat his opponent 3/1 after struggling for form on day one. Greg Shaw rallied hard to take his match down the last, however well played 3’s by both players meant a loss 1 down. At number one Rhys Harold was soundly defeated by a player that showed great form to be well under the card at the conclusion of the match. Rhys had 2 wins on day one, as did Nic Quantock-Holmes who was also out

Manor Park golfer Julianne Alvarez has successfully defended her title at the Harewood Open in Christchurch. The 17-year-old, who won her first national title at the same Charles Tour event last year, carded a two-under par 70 on the final day of the tournament on Monday (October 28) to win by five strokes from Taupo amateur Grace Senior. “It is really meaningful to win back to back here,” said Alvarez, who is Wellington’s No 1 ranked player. “This is the place where it all started for me last year. I won my first national title here and it feels really good to have defended my title.” Alvarez said there were nerves standing on the first tee on the final day as she knew the title was hers to lose. “Grace (Senior) played really well today and put pressure on me. There are always going to be nerves when you are trying to

win a title but I handled it pretty well. I was just focusing on myself.” Alvarez has enjoyed a dream season. She won the New Zealand amateur title in April, the New Zealand under-19 in September and now has added her second win on The Charles Tour. She said the key to her form has been the renewed belief in her ability. “The confidence I got from winning this tournament last year- knowing that I could win a national title was a big turning point for me. Now I back myself more and I have sharpened up my game a lot more as well. “The big difference that has helped me winning titles this year has been my putting. I have made big improvements in that area of my game and it is paying off.” Alvarez is looking forward to carrying this form on to the women’s interprovincial tournament which will be staged in mid-December at the Muriwai Golf Club in Auckland. Wellington finished runner-up to Auckland last year at St Clair in Dunedin and
Alvarez is keen for the team to go one better this year. “I hear Muriwai is really windy as well so I am looking forward to that,” she said. “We are all pretty excited about that week. It should be good fun.”
NEW MEN’S CLUB CHAMPION Congratulations to Daniel Hillier of Manor Park Golf Sanctuary who has become the men’s Club Champion at the tender age of 15 by defeating last year’s champion Armand Hill. Daniel shot a 2 under 69 in the morning round and was a delight to watch and was always going to be difficult to head off in that type of form. He now holds three Club trophies; the Stroke-play, Match-play and was Top Qualifier and we look forward with much anticipation as to how good he will get as he advances to adulthood.
Tupangaia comes of age Royal Wellington turned on the weather played last month and just as well with the majority of players finding the black tee (6601 meters) blocks more than a challenge with only a few mastering the length of the course coupled with the tricky greens. GOLF TRAILS ing to Daniel Hillier and Rodney Barltrop respectively. Tavita Mene beating masters No 1 Malcolm Gullery and Thomas Spearman Burn beating James Jennings. Darin Hiroki followed up his masters tournament debut beating Shandons Devon Kay. The Quarterfinals also threw up a number of upsets with Wellington No 4 for the Toro Interprovincial Thomas Spearman Burn soundly beaten by Tavita Mene 5/4, with Rodney Barltrop running out a comfortable victor over Elton Nicholson and on the other side of the draw Carl Tupangaia thumped his club mate Daniel Hillier 7/6 and Darin Hiroki managed to sneak past David Van Drimmelen on the 20th hole. There was a bit more wind in the semi finals with the breeze picking up as the day went on. In the semi finals Carl Tupangaia continued his good form being 3 up after 9 holes and going 4 up at the tenth but gave 3 back with 3 costly double bogeys only to steady the ship and win with a tap in birdie on the 17th by 3/1. Rodney Barltrop was 2 up after 2 holes but with a string of bogeys saw Tavita Mene turn 2 up. Rodney Barltrop’s back nine play was to steady for Mene, Barltrop running out the winner 3/2 setting up a final against Manor Parks Carl Tupangaia. The final between Carl Tupangaia and Rodney Barltrop started with a win each with Barltrop on the first and Tupangaia squaring the match on the 2nd. Barltrop 3 putted the par 3 third hole to lose to a Tupangaia par. Tupangaia missed a short putt at the 4th hole to again bring the match back to square. On the tough 443 mtr par 4
golferpacific.co.nz fifth hole Tupangaia played two great shots into the wind to 15 feet and Barltrop conceded the hole. With a par on the sixth Tupangaia went 2 up and stayed that way till the 13th hole with Barltrops superb sand save at 11 keeping him from going 3 down. Barltrop got one back at the 13th when Tupangaia found the trees on the left side of the hole. This was to be the last win for Barltrop as Tupangaia put the foot down and birdied the 14th hole from 6 feet and a solid par on the difficult par 4 15 was followed up by the shot of the final on the 215 mtr par 3 16th where Tupangaia hit a 3 iron to 2 feet and after Barltrop missed his chip the hole and match was conceded and Tupangaia winning 4/2. The final was memorable feat for Barltrop after 1st winning this trophy in 1968 and having won the Wellington matchplay no less than 8 times. In the playoff for 3rd Darin Hiroki beat Tavita Mene 1up in a tight match where both players could be pleased with how par they progressed in this tournament.

CANTERBURY GOLF TRAIL
MEN’S TEAM FINISH THIRD
NARROWLY DEFEATED In the lead up to the Toro NZ Interprovincials the Canterbury Women’s team played against Wellington at Clearwater last month. In the morning Wellington dominated the young Canterbury team 5-1 with Hillary O’Connor securing the only point with a 1 up win. The Canterbury Women’s team showed great fight in the afternoon in the singles matches to win 4/2, finishing with an overall result of 7-5 going Wellington’s way. Canterbury was missing the services of Catherine Bell due to exams so young Amelia Garvey stepped up to the number two position taking on NZ rep Julianne Alvarez in the morning suffering a 6/5 loss but she fought back in the afternoon with a great win 7/6 over Te Rongopai Clay.
The 3 Under Canterbury Men’s Team have finished third in a close battle for the South Island Interprovincial title. Played at Methven Golf Club last weekend, the teams played Southland, Otago, Aorangi and Tasman. The team managed a half against Tasman and a win against Southland and Aorangi but was beaten by Otago. This left the team on 2.5 points and 17 games, while both Tasman and Otago had 3 points. Tasman was awarded the trophy on a countback of games.
CGI WOMEN’S CHAMP
A DRAMATIC DAY OF FINALS
The CGI Women’s Champion of Champions and Gross Stableford Rosebowl was held at Christchurch Golf Club last month. Hillary O’Connor from Coringa was victorious in the Champion of Champions with scores of 82, 79 161, 4 shots clear of Nicole Woodgate from Templeton. The Gross Stableford Rosebowl was won by Clearwater (Maryanne Marlow, Rachel Eder and Anne Peate) by 5 points from Ellesmere.
The final of the Woodward Cup was played last month, with Russley taking on Christchurch. As expected this was a battle royal and ended in a play-off after regulation play finished 3 – 3. But there was much drama prior to the play-off including some controversy when Shaun Jones, with a short putt into the 15th hole, picked up his ball after another player in the group had put the flag in. said it had not been conceded and Jones lost the hole, and went on to lose the game 1 down. Christchurch also got wins from Ryan Chisnall over Owen Burgess 4 & 2 and Marcel Boet beat Connell Kilpatrick 4 & 2. For Russley Steven Heyes beat JJ Love 5 & 4, Andrew Dufton beat Richard Reed 2 & 1 and Garth Treacy beat Phil Tuoro 4/2. Notably Dufton was bought into the Russley team in the afternoon for Michael McAuley, Manager Murray Brown probably looking at Dufton’s recent good form at the Freyberg Masters to bolster the team’s chances. So to the play-off and one player was chosen from each team. Jordan Bakermans
played for Christchurch and Steven Heyes for Russley. They played the 18th hole and Jordan Bakermans had a five footer to win it for Christchurch – he hadn’t missed one all day but did so this time and the hole was halved. They went back down the 18th and this time Heyes stuck his approach three foot from the pin. Bakermans flew the back of the green and failed to get upand-down, conceding Heyes his birdie and the title to Russley. There were joyous scenes around the 18th green as the day had stretched out to 7.30pm. Pictured from left are the winning Russley team of Andrew Dufton, Owen Burgess, Murray Brown (Manager), Shaun Jones, Michael McAuley, Steven Heyes, Connell Kilpatrick, Regan Kilpatrick & Garth Treacy.

with a 4BBB Stableford on the Saturday, followed by Combined Stableford on the Sunday. This event has been sponsored by Skyline Queenstown every year since 1979 and boasts to be the longest sponsored golf tournament in New Zealand. There are two fields each day teeing off at 7.45am and 1pm to the sound of a Shotgun. Saturday was a perfect day for golf with no wind and a temperature of 26 degrees, which set the course up for great scoring with Queenstown members Peter Waaka and Corey Sinteur taking the overnight lead with a 4BBB Stableford score of 49. On the Saturday Night players went up to the Skyline for a delicious Buffet Dinner and a couple of beers and wines, while Guest Speaker Warren Lees entertained and educated a captive audience. On Sunday the weather played its part in bringing gusty winds and high cloud, which made for difficult scoring. Queen-
stown member Sam Lee with his partner Mihee Woo combined the best with 81 points, which jumped them up from 79th to finish 2nd (one point behind), But it was Harewood Members Peter Chadwick and Darren Herd that won the 35th Skyline Classic with an overall points total of 122.

The format has the silver division 0 -18.4 playing 36 holes and the bronze 18. Wanaka’s Liz McRae handled the windy conditions best with 77 and 81 off the stick while in Bronze I Zeta Burgess from Arrowtown, playing off a 23 handicap, shot a very creditable 85. Arrowtown club narrowly won the Team Shield which is calculated on the best 3 36-hole gross scores from any one Central Otago club. June Watson, Dale Dagg and Maria Arhanic finished on 502, just one shot better than a Wanaka trio At the prize-giving Central Otago association president Jude Laing, and secretary and life member Val Braidwood congratulated the participants on their support so that the event could become an annual one once again. Cromwell Club Captain Laurel Brent had special thanks for the 2013 tournament sponsors Crom-

Arnesen Champions Pictured are 3 of the 4 Arnesen family who are members of the Roxburgh Golf Club. They all took part in the recent Club Championships and were all winners. On the left is Nigel – Senior Champion. He is also an excellent and committed Junior Golf Coach who has been instrumental in generating so much interest, skills and enthusiasm amongst our young golfers. On the right is his brother Derek – Intermediate Champion and in the middle is Derek’s 12 year old son Daniel, Junior B Champion. Daniel and 15 year old Jonty McKinnel are both proteges of Nigel. Jonty recently won the Club Junior A Championship. Both these Roxburgh Area School boys took part in the Otago School Pupils matchplay and strokeplay Championships held at Chisholm Park in the last school holidays. Jonty won the Handicap Matchplay Tournament again (back to back following his success last year) and Daniel the Stableford Competition. The Roxburgh Golf Club is very proud of all our Junior Golfers and is especially grateful to the time and commitment made by Nigel Arnesen.
Otago Second on Game Count at 2013 SIIP A first-day loss to Tasman has cost Otago a win in the South Island men’s interprovincial teams tournament, which was played over four rounds on the Methven course last month. Otago went on to beat Aorangi, Canterbury and Southland but the team tied with Tasman which had two wins and two halves. Tasman took the honours on the countback with 19 games, while Otago finished second on 17.5 games and Canterbury languished in third place. Southland which won the Toro national event in Gisborne two years ago and was defending the South Island title, failed to post a win and took the wooden spoon, with half a point and 12 games. The event was the most level contest in recent years with the 40 golfers meeting a fiery course, in windy conditions, on Saturday and a very different track yesterday, after overnight watering. Only two golfers notched four
wins during the weekend. Josh Smith at No5 cemented his place in the Aorangi quintet and Karl Mariu (Southland No3) continued his winning form. Mariu, a former Canterbury representative, also won seven of his eight games in last week’s Masters (over-40) contest, at No 1 for Southland. Mark Brooks, at No2, was the pick of the Otago golfers but he did not find it easy and all of his four games finished on the final green. Brooks finished with two wins and two halves while Tasman’s Hamish Campbell and Nick Ludbrook were also unbeaten, with three wins and a-half each. Otago’s No. 1 Brent McEwan had three wins and almost got out of jail after trailing Tasman’s Ryan Chisnall by four after eight holes. Nick Borren was solid at No3, winning his first three games in style losing only to Mariu, on the 15th green in the final round. However, many of the other players still trialling for places were tentative on Saturday, with unpredictable bounces and recently cored greens. But they came to the party yesterday, when both Sean Masters (No5) and Brandon Hodgson (No7) won both their matches.
Strong Finish by Otago at Freyberg Masters
A gutsy performance on the final day of the 2013 Freyberg Masters has lifted Otago to a respectable 5th place finish in the tournament. With six wins and a half from eight outings, Bay of Plenty won the Freyberg Masters (over-40) tournament which concluded on the Coringa course in Christchurch last month. Aorangi finished in second place, pipping Northland on a countback of games with Canterbury fourth and Otago fifth. It was pleasing to see four of the five South Island teams in the top six as Southland finished one place behind Otago. Otago did Aorangi proud, in the penultimate round, by beating a strong Northland, but the South Canterbury golfers lost to Auckland in the final round which cost them the title. Simon Wright and Robbie Bell (both Aorangi) were the best individuals with seven wins and a half each while Otago No 3 Andrew Hobbs lost in the morning which prevented him from a clean sweep. Otago finished strongly with two wins, beating Northland and Manawatu-Wanganui by a 3 to 2 margin. The pick of the Otago players were the greenkeeping duo with Hobbs winning seven while Gary Creedy won six of his eight matches. Special mention to Queenstown’s Simon Boland who stepped up to No 1 on three occasions,
GOLF TRAILS
golferpacific.co.nz both finished on the 17th green. No 2 Hobbs turned two light and Bob Shirley played solid golf coming home, not letting Hobbs back into the game. Creedy beat Scott Wilson on the final green while Ken Shaw (No 5) had putting woes and was out of contention at five
notching two wins and one half. Northland had a star-studded line-up with Saali Herewini at No 1 and Kevin Billington at No 3 – both former New Zealand representatives. But Boland and Greg Johnson accounted for both in the morning matches which

in a tight tussle, Johnson eked out a half with Martin Field. Creedy was behind all the way, eventually losing to Tony Chettleburgh on the 15th. Shaw concentrated on his putting at lunch which paid dividends as he beat Kieran Corkill on the 16th green.
