A journey that did not emerge from the financial tunnel

Y

ou can’t help feel sorry for Guy Wilson. But life isn’t fair sometimes.

It was a shock to hear at the end of last year that golfing sensation Lydia Ko was splitting from Wilson after more than a decade together.

Even those who suspected something like this might happen, it still would have stopped them in their tracks when they first heard the news.

This was a very dramatic case. Wilson had been with Ko since she was aged six and she had climbed to No 4 in the world at the tender age of 16. But it’s what the future held for Ko that would have hurt Wilson the most.

This was a journey still a long way from its destination but which promised to have some very exciting stops along the way.

And it’s not all about the money. Ko had already won five professional tournaments before her link with Wilson ended. That alone must have been immensely satisfying for the Auckland coach.

But it’s human nature not to consider the money. Wilson would not have derived much

income from his 11 years with Ko and he no doubt harboured thoughts a payback time would come.

Then just as the financial light appeared at the end of the tunnel, Wilson found the tunnel had been shut down. His journey was over.

So why? Because it was presumed Wilson could not regularly be on hand with Ko in the United States? Possibly. Did Wilson need to be regularly on hand with Ko in the United States? Possibly not.

Take the example of Tim Wilkinson. The Manawatu golfer has clawed his way back onto the world’s richest circuit, the PGA Tour.

Wilkinson’s coach is Andre White from Palmerston North. Not once did White travel to the United States last year to coach Wilkinson. It was all done by live video over the internet.

The Ko-Wilson split made me think should coaches be thrusting contracts in front of all their promising students to ensure they get a financial return if they turn professional?

The answer is no. I again return to Wilkinson and White as an example. There is no con-

tract between the pair. The partnership operates on a verbal understanding.

They are the best contracts. The day one doesn’t want to work for the other is the day the other should not work for them.

If it’s any consolation for Wilson he may have suspected a split was a possibility.

Golfer Pacific probably did the last verbal interview with Wilson before the parting was announced.

Towards the end of the interview Wilson was asked if it was correct to presume he technically remained Ko’s coach. ``Thus far, yes,’’ was his reply.

But when asked if he was seeing less and less of Ko up to that time there was a concession that was the case. ``She’s been overseas. Her tour schedule is obviously going to get in the way of that. It will be interesting to see what happens next year.’’

It was that last sentence, with the benefit of hindsight, that perhaps suggested Wilson wondered, or knew, something was afoot. Indeed there was.

Fox keen to try his hand in US or Europe

R

yan Fox, one of leading local hopes for this month’s New Zealand Open, hopes this year can provide him with the chance to qualify to play in the United States or Europe.

Fox, 27, has been a professional golfer for two years and is currently plying his trade mainly in New Zealand and Australia in addition to a few events on the OneAsia circuit.

But the dream of playing in the United States or on the European Tour burns brightly. His avenue to either of those places would be qualifying tournaments, commonly referred to as Q-school. ``It really depends on how the first half of the year goes but I’m thinking of going overseas to Q-school at the end of the year,’’ Fox told Golfer Pacific from his Auckland home.

But because those events are held towards the end of the year that complicates matters for players like Fox whose main source of income is the Australasian Tour.

Some of the better tournaments on the Australasian Tour are played at that time of the year and Fox would need to feel comfortable he earned sufficient money to retain his card for Australasia before trekking to the other side of the world for

Q-school events.

And that’s why early-season form in events like the New Zealand Open is important and that is something Fox is acutely aware of.

It was just last year that he feared losing his Australasian card until finding some form at the end of 2013 with a fifth in the Australian Masters being a standout performance. ``I had won virtually no money on the Aussie tour until the Masters. I was really struggling with my game up until that week,’’ Fox recalled. ``That enabled me to keep my card. I probably won 90 percent of my earnings on the money list in that one week.’’

The Australian Masters carried a purse of $A1 million and because the World Cup of Golf was being played at the same venue the following week it attracted a top class field.

Fox scored a five-under 66 on the third day to be paired with Presidents Cup representative Brendon de Jonge on the final day which added to the occasion. ``I had played with a Presidents Cup player and then to look at the leaderboard and see that three of the four names ahead of me were Adam Scott, Matt Kuchar and Vinjay Singh -- that was a cool thing to see at the end of the week.’’

Fox picked up $A39,000 for his fifth in

the Australian Masters and he described the event as the highlight of his career to date.

A couple of months earlier Fox had earned $A36,000 in winning the Jeep ProAm and although that was not part of the Australasian Tour it eased some financial pressures.

Fox won the Jeep Pro-Am in a three-way play-off after shooting a brilliant seven-under 65 in the final round at the Royal Pines course on the Gold Coast. ``They advertised is as the best pro-am in Australia. It had a $A200,000 purse and because there wasn’t really much on that week it attracted a really good field. ``Royal Pines is a place I have played at Fact file

a lot. The course suited me, I drove it well and managed to sink a few putts later in the week.’’

Fox will have his father, All Back great Grant Fox, as his caddie at the New Zealand Open, sponsored by car manufacturer BMW, which is being played at the dual venues of The Hills and Millbrook in Queenstown.

Fox said having his father as caddie was always a plus factor. ``He’s played top level sport and he knows what it is like. It’s good to have someone like that who has had that kind of experience on my side.’’

But he admitted a father-son relationship on the golf course also brought its difficulties because each had so much invested in the other. ``Earlier on there was some friction there because of that. We kind of worked out that the father-son relationship couldn’t continue on the golf course, if you know what I mean. It’s almost too close, it had to be a player-caddie relationship.’’

Fox said life as a golfing professional was not easy but he wouldn’t swap it for anything. ``I did struggle with it at times last year but I don’t want to do anything else. I still enjoy it. It’s my job but I have still got to let it be fun.’’

It’s what makes the guys at the top the best. That’s always a place to improve, you can never be too good around the greens.’’

Keeping an even temperament was another factor that required attention, he said. ``I probably need to stay a bit calmer on the golf course – not because I get angry.

I might be a little up and down – too excited when I start playing well and a little bit down on myself when I start playing badly. I just need to keep the emotions on an even keel.’’

All is not lost for Ko’s former coach Guy Wilson, says NZPGA chief

G

uy Wilson may no longer be Lydia Ko’s coach but there is one thing that cannot be taken away from him, says New Zealand Professional Golfers’ Association chief executive Duncan Simpson.

Simpson, who is also a columnist for Golfer Pacific, said the fact remains Wilson was the person who nurtured Ko for more than a decade to become one of the hottest properties in world golf at age 16. ``I naturally feel sorry for Guy but these things happen,’’ Simpson told Golfer Pacific. ``Guy can take huge credit for taking Lydia, literally from a six-year-old to where she is at the moment. That’s practically unparalleled anywhere else in the golfing world.’’

While the Auckland coach would no longer be directly associated with Ko he had a connection that would last with him for the rest of his golfing career, Simpson said. ``The fact that he was her coach until the end of last year, I’m sure that

will stand him in good stead in years to come.’’

Simpson said Ko’s split with Wilson did not mean golf coaches should consider the extreme of placing a contract in front a child’s parents from the moment they scored their first birdie. ``I suppose that theory is possible but Lydia is an absolute exception. There are thousands of six- to eight-year-olds who have a crack at golf ... and of course many of them disappear, move to other sports or whatever.’’

Simpson, however, was well aware that something similar was already prevalent in other major sports such as football, basketball, rugby and rugby league.

Scouts in each of those sports are always eager to sign up new blood.

But he added the very promising golfers were well looked after by New Zealand Golf and there is significant funding from Sport New Zealand in Ko’s case.

Those two organisations were probably Wilson’s major source of income from his coaching of Ko. Simpson said tying down a promising amateur to a long-term contract was

also complicated by the fact golfers could come into the sport at different ages, citing the example of Michael Hendry who was more of a cricketer before devoting himself to golf.

Simpson said Wilson took the news that Ko had signed up with an American coach as well at one could expect. ``I sympathised with him. It was tough news to get at any time but I said to him nobody can take away the achievement in taking her to where she is at the moment. I said we are all very proud of you as a PGA member. ``It reflects the fact that somebody down here in New Zealand ... can take a player to that level in the world and I’m sure there are more amazing players like Lydia waiting to be discovered. ``I’m sure there must have been some discussion about carrying on with Guy. They would have weighed that up but in the end that’s the decision they have taken. ``But who knows? At some point in the future, if things don’t work out, he may be back in the frame again. Forever is a long time.’’

Koh follows Campbell’s win of 22 years earlier

A

uckland golfer Tae Koh has become just the third New Zealander to win the Australian Amateur Championship in its 120-year history.

Koh, 19, was up against the highly-rated Australian player Curtis Luck in the 36hole final at The Grange Golf Club in Adelaide but despatched him comfortably to win 6 and 5.

The previous New Zealander to win the Australian Amateur was Michael Campbell who was victorious in 1992. The only other Kiwi to win the event, which was first played in 1894, was C E S Gillies. He won in 1899.

Koh, from the Manukau Golf Club, went to the 31st hole of the final with a 6-up lead and secured the win after a tentative first putt. ``I left my first putt around four of five feet short,’’ Koh recalled, adding he had support from a number of other New Zealanders who had played in the tournament. ``I held my composure and made the putt and when it went in I was pretty relieved really. I couldn’t believe it. It was a great feeling with all of the guys around me.’’ ``This is a big championship to win and I am really proud of myself.”

Koh has not won a national title in New Zealand but twice in the last two years has reached the semi-finals of the New Zealand Amateur. It was also the first time he had played in Australia. ``It is the biggest win [of my career].

To win 6 and 5 was a pretty good effort, I thought, as it was pretty hard out there and it was a really tough match. I just played awesome and this is an awesome result for me.’’

Coincidently when Campbell won 22 years earlier it was also in Adelaide but at the different venue of the Royal Adelaide Golf Club. Campbell later in his career went on to win the United States Open in 2005.

sociated with Campbell. ``Obviously he is a major champion and a great player and it would be great to follow in his footsteps with my career. It is an honour to win this event after him. This is my first time in Australia and it’s a good one to win first up.’’

Koh’s short game was impeccable throughout the final and a key to the win. ``My short game was really solid today,” he said. ``It was pretty windy out there so it was hard to hit the greens. Even if you hit the green it was hard to hold them as they were running fast so that meant the short game came into play a lot. I chipped really well.

The rough over here wasn’t very thick so that meant you could spin the ball quite a lot and that played right into my hands.”

Koh began the final in style when he birdied the opening hole to go 1 up and was never to relinquish the lead. He made par on the second to be 2 up and another birdie on the sixth saw him advance to 3 up. A birdie on the ninth took him to 4 up.

Koh bogeyed the 10th and his lead was reduced to 2 up when his West Australian opponent birdied the 13th.

But the very next hole was a turning point, Koh said. ``All I can remember is the 14th hole. He (Curtis Luck) had a bit of a run going there and was coming back at me and I made a good putt for par that got the momentum back.’’

Koh was 4 up after 18 holes and from there never looked back. ``I wasn’t actually that nervous as I had a big crowd around my (semi-final) match yesterday against Anthony [Murdaca] who was a local. They all wanted him to win and I had to deal with that pressure and the final was more of the same. They didn’t want me to win but that was all right.”

Koh’s win earns him a place in the 2014 Australian Open and he hopes it has advanced his chances of competing in the World Amateur Teams’ Golf Championship, known as the Eisenhower, in Japan later

New Zealand Open: Pre-qualifiers found across NZ

T

he road to the New Zealand Open Championship started last month for around 190 golfers across New Zealand at four iconic venues that have all hosted major New Zealand Golf tournaments.

A total of 25 golfers advanced to the Final Stage of the Qualifying for the New Zealand Open Championship in Queenstown.

The tournament, a tier one event on the PGA Tour of Australasia, will be hosted at The Hills and Millbrook Resort from February 27 to March 2 and with a purse of $NZ 900,000 is expected to be the biggest tournament staged in New Zealand for many years.

Four pre-qualifying events were held across New Zealand at the Royal Auckland Golf Club, Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club, Christchurch Golf Club and Chisholm Park.

Twelve golfers from Royal Auckland advanced with Bay of Plenty golfer Bailey Smith, who recently won a junior title in Australia, the winner of the event with a one-

Waikato rep Denzel Ieremia and Bay of Plenty rep Charlie Hillier, who recently won the North Island Under 19 Championship, were also among the qualifiers from Middlemore.

Four players finished on fourover par 76 and Joshua Leitch birdied the first playoff hole to secure the 12th and final place from Royal Auckland.

Wellington No.1 Marc Jennings, who was superb for his province in the Toro NZ Men’s Interprovincial at North Shore Golf Club, won the event at Paraparaumu Beach

when he carded a two-under par 70.

Manawatu reps Hayden Ring and Lachie McDonald, who were standouts in their province’s historic winning of the Toro title in December, also advanced with rounds of 73 and 74 respectively at the 12-time host of the NZ Open.

At the Christchurch Golf Club, seven golfers advanced to the final qualifiers in the warm and windy conditions.

Former New Zealand rep Jordan Bakermans won the event on his home course when he carded a two-under par 70.

He was joined by six others with four golfers – Jun Hyeong Seok (South Korea), Carl Brooking (P), Jordan Green (Ashburton), Byung Chae Ryu (South Korea) – sneaking in by one shot when they finished on even par 72.

Meanwhile at the Chisholm Park Golf Club in Dunedin three players – Jeremy Hall (67), Michael Smith (69) and Brendan Hodgson (69) – advanced to final qualifying.

The final stage of qualifying will be held at the Omaha Beach Golf Club and Cromwell Golf Club on Monday February 24 and Tuesday February 25 respectively.

A total of 10 spaces in the final New Zealand Open field will be played for at the final qualifying tournaments.

Golfing year already into full swing

T

his year is going to be a big one for New Zealand Golf and we have already hit the ground running.

There are plenty of new initiatives on the horizon to continue growing the game that we love across New Zealand. Amongst the first tasks on the calendar for our team this year was staging the ISPS Handa New Zealand Women’s Open.

Next is the New Zealand Open Championship which returns to Queenstown.

The men’s Open, which will be hosted by The Hills and Millbrook for the first time, will be another memorable event in Queenstown with a quality field and some well-known celebrities already confirmed.

While we are on high performance it would be remiss of me to not mention the wonderful win of Auckland golfer Tae Koh in the Australian Amateur.

Tae has been a player of promise for some time and it is great to see him fulfill that potential on a big stage like the Aussie Amateur. We have also enjoyed some success in the junior ranks with Bailey Smith and Alanna Campbell winning Australian titles early in 2014. The aspiration to have more Kiwis winning on the world

stage is becoming a reality and that is really rewarding for all involved.

In the marketing of the game New Zealand Golf is making great strides in promoting the game on the back of the successful campaign launched by Lydia Ko’s going pro YouTube video late in 2013. Like never before, clubs will be engaged in a nationwide media and marketing campaign that is designed to encourage more people to play golf and ultimately join golf clubs.

Watch this space.

We are confident that this will have a quantifiable effect on golf club membership in New Zealand.

We are also focused on our new strategic direction that aspires to have greater impact in the clubs and communities region. Kenny Halliday, our community golf manager, is making great progress in this area and, in partnership with our district associations, our activity in the grass roots golf community scene will be increased in the coming months.

We are really excited about taking golf in a fresh direction in 2014 and all of the changes we are making are designed to build a successful and sustainable future for our game in New Zealand. We enjoyed a great year in

Where will you be in 10 years, trainee golf professionals asked

I

n a follow up to last month’s column on the New Zealand Professional Golfers’ Association (NZGPA) trainee programme and the graduation of year three trainee golf professionals, I had asked some of the graduates about becoming golf professionals. This column is a continuation of that piece and where they see themselves heading as PGA golf professionals.

I would like to thank Rob Illot (Millbrook Resort), Sean Riordan (Nelson Golf Club), Kerryn Jamieson (Pukekohe Golf Club), Mathew Davis (Northland Golf Club) and Matt Davis (Ashburton Golf Club) for their time and opinions.

When asked about where they saw themselves in 10 years time in the golf industry or otherwise, Rob Illot answered he would likely be a director of golf for a top course and well distinguished as a teaching professional. Sean Riordan sees himself s either as a tour player or a coach. ``The qualification that I have now, can take me anywhere in the world, which I think is very exciting,” Riordan said.

Kerryn Jamieson sees himself as offering a service to the golfing community that will give them the tools and resourc-

es to improve players’ games to a level they have only dreamed. Mathew Davis also sees himself in the golf industry, in a position to mentor people. ``I’m drawn to that and love people, so I see myself gravitating to positions where I’m able to do that,” Mathew Davis said.

Matt Davis believes he’ll be working as a short game specialist coach running a business in south-mid Canterbury.

What is the number one piece of advice you would give a 24-handicapper to improve their golf?

Riordan’s suggestion is to visit a NZPGA professional who would help identify goals so they can become the golfer they always wanted to be. Jamieson said ``make a commitment to change and go and see your local NZPGA professional to improve all aspects of your game. It will be the best investment that anyone who wants to start the game or improve their current game will make. The game is hard enough as it is, so getting the right education and knowledge will help you enjoy it even more. Don’t be too proud to say you are taking lessons.” Mathew Davis believes that they should find a great mentor that wants you to improve as much as you do. A PGA member that cares for you

and your game is perfect. Then play until the sun goes down. Matt Davis believes that golf is like learning to drive a car for the first time, you will never succeed in your first lesson but over time, with practice and dedication, you will achieve it.

Illot said golf lessons are the key to improvement and to take ``more club” when hitting your second shots.

Asked the question “If you have the ability to lead golf in New Zealand, what are the key initiatives you would introduce to grow the game?

Jamieson answered: ``I would like to see a greater push in 9-hole golf due to the limited amount of time that many people experience because of family and work commitments. I would also like to see a greater push towards equality for both men and ladies within the industry. There is too much segregation within the game.

Golf is a great family game and the game and the facilities that golf clubs have need to be attractive for the entire family, not just the golfer”. For Mathew Davis it’s all about communication. ``We need to have outreach programmes aimed at the wider community of non-golfers”. Matt Davis wants to get every school in New Zealand to involve golf as part of their yearly

curriculum through Snag Golf which not only teaches golf but also provides a huge education base using maths, science, physical education and social skills.

Illot wants to see more golf programmes instead of just lessons and more tournaments held around the country for all levels of players. That includes more golf involvement in the communities and more golf in schools. Riordan said what hooked him into golf was the challenge to always beat his prior score on the course and to develop himself in a way to achieve this. ``I believe golf needs to become more accessible, fun and some golfing traditions need to be more lenient for this to happen – such as a relaxation of dress codes. The more people we can get playing the game the better”.

In listening to this bright group of young professionals, they have some interesting points and views that reflect the upcoming generation of players. I would encourage all golf clubs, golf administrators and golf club board members to talk to their successful younger players along with other leading young individuals in the community to see where they see your golf club heading in the next 10 years.

olf is not the easiest game to play, as we all know. But at times it can be made to verge on the impossible.

The book entitled Extreme Golf, by Duncan Lennard, exposes a few of the more bizarre and devilish challenges available in the world of golf, including the world’s longest golf course and the world’s most difficult course.

The latter is Ko’olau in Hawaii, which boasts an unofficial slope rating of 162 (unofficial because the current USGA system peaks out at 155), which can be compared to Pine Valley at 153 and Augusta National at 152.

The locals at Ko’olau claim that scratch players will not break 80 first time around, although the course record is 67. Perhaps more relevant is the “sleeve rating”, which I first encountered at the Cape Kidnappers course in Hawke’s Bay a few years ago.

It was there I heard some American visitors talking of a ``three sleeve course” before they teed off. The rule of thumb at Ko’olau, apparently, is that you will lose the same number of balls as your handicap, with the record held by a hapless individual who lost 63 in a single round, returning to the pro shop three times to

We don’t face the same challenges today, but making golf as difficult as possible seems to be wired into our DNA. We do this by not practicing, trying to self-fix the many faults we have, not get-

ting professional advice on our equipment, walking on to the first tee with no warm up, and so on.

Green keepers and club committees often get in on the act as well, particularly when there is a proam or similar event on the programme. Greens get shaved to high numbers on the Stimpmeter, fairways are narrowed and the pins tucked away in the most inaccessible spots possible. The idea is to stop the professionals and other elite players burning up the course; but the real outcome is five and a half or six hours of misery for the average golfers playing on the day.

I struck something similar at my own club just before Christmas, when a series of exotic pin positions starting from the first hole culminated with the 18th being so well hidden away it might as well have been stuck on the clubhouse roof.

We all like a challenge from time to time, but in the end golf has to be fun for the weekend warriors who are the backbone of most clubs. Golf clubs need to think about this because research says that higher handicap golfers are more likely to resign or leave the game entirely, and so if the course is consistently set up for the benefit of the better players this trend will be encouraged.

At the same time we as golfers can do ourselves some favours by getting the right advice on our game and equipment, putting aside some time for practice, and getting properly warmed up before we tee off. Some good resolutions for 2014?

I think so.

In the end golf has to be fun for the weekend warriors...

Bay of Plenty and Auckland players win at North Island under-19s Bay of Plenty representative Charlie Hillier completed a memorable end-to-end win in the North Island under 19 championship at the Hamilton Golf Club.

Hillier, from the Te Puke Golf Club, went into the final of three rounds with a one shot lead over Brayden Mazey (Royal Wellington).

Hillier scored a one-over par 73 in warm but windy conditions on the last day and that was sufficient to win by four strokes. Second was Fidel Concepcion, of Australia, while Mazey had 78 in his final round to be two shots further back in third place.

The previous month Hillier was part of the Bay of Plenty team which was beaten in the final of the Interprovincials, New Zealand’s premier teams’ championship.

Hillier’s win at the St Andrews’ course in Hamilton continued his province’s impressive start to 2014. Bay of Plenty now has three trophies in its cabinet early in 2014 after Bailey Smith and Alanna Campbell both won junior titles in Australia.

Victory didn’t always look likely for Hillier on the final day as he got off to a slow start.

He opened with three bogeys in the first seven holes but rallied with birdies on the 8th and 10th to restore his lead.

Mazey birdied the opening hole in the final round to get into a share of the lead but faded

over his first nine holes to turn in a four-over par 41.

Concepcion had his chance to win for Australia when he delivered a couple of late birdies but bogeys in three of the final four holes thwarted his challenge.

Hillier mixed a bogey and birdie on the 13th and 15th respectively and then scored pars on his way home to secure the title in comfortable fashion.

After rounds of 69, 75 and 73 for a one-over par total, Hillier was a deserved champion and joined the likes of Phil Tataurangi, Mark Brown and Brad Iles as a winner of the event.

Meanwhile in the women’s equivalent, played down the road at the Ngaruawahia Golf Club, victory went to Jocelynn Katu of Auckland.

Katu, who plays out of the Aviation Golf Club, held a five shot lead over Tyla Kingi (Opotiki) and Jiyeon Park (South Korea) heading into the final round.

It was fortunate Katu had a good-sized lead because she had a 10-over par 82 in the difficult conditions of the final round but that was enough to win by two shots from Park.

Third was Hillary O’Connor of Christchurch who had 77 in her final round while fourth was defending champion Celeste McLean who had 80 in the last round.

fter 108 holes in the 77th National Maori Golf, the final leaderboard had familiar names and featured some new ones to look out for. The course conditions were testing yet rewarding for all players. Te Puke offered a challenging, yet beautiful rural setting for the Seniors and Intermediate Men and the Ladies divisions. Omanu was one of the best groomed courses with carpet surfaces for the Junior, Masters, Golden Girls and our Rangatahi (Under 19) divisions.

The Queen Elizabeth Centre, Tauranga was the venue for the Awards evening. Awards were presented by Meka Whaitiri, MP Ikaroa-Tairawhiti; Roku Mihinui, NZMGA President and two major sponsors Winnie and Simon Geddes of Tane Mahuta Forestry; Colleen and Dave Goodfellow from Shuzi. We also took the opportunity to welcome our life members Kingi and Sophie Porima, Polly King (seven times senior ladies past champion), Harry Ngatai, Angus Wright and George Blake whom all assited in the presentations.

Special awards were given to Mark Lewis and Jeff Saunders for their holes-in-one. While they didn’t go home with the Ssangyong sponsored car, it’s still a round and will be available for the next 10 years for our National Tournaments as a sponsored hole in one.

The first inaugural joint scholarship between NZ Golf and NZ Maori Golf were presented to Brooke Kingi Nga Puhi who plays out of the Whangaroa Golf Club. There was to be a second recipient but the player although applied did not enter and play in this year’s national tournament. COURSE architect Chris Pitman has worked wonders on the redevelopment of this hole and even though it is a relatively short par-five, it now presents a real challenge for all golfers. A fairway, lined with towering trees, demands a controlled tee shot.

Driver is the best option and having found a tight landing space with enough distance on the ball, a birdie opportunity opens up.

However, the second shot needs to be accurate and the large bunkers and undulating fairways taken into account.

If you struggle for distance then you can lay up, but you have to be mindful of the uphill slopes 130 metres out. Club selection

for the third shot is also important if the heavily bunkered green is to be safely reached. Anything wayward will result in a scramble to make par or worse.

Add in the effect of the in-your-face prevailing winds and everything just gets a whole lot harder. A tricky two-tiered sloping green rounds out the hole and hopefully a par or better is achieved.

Or as one member suggests – you can smash it 290, follow it up with a lazy six iron on to the green and you’re up for an eagle or at worst an easy birdie. But that’s another story!

The club’s third hole is worth a visit alone.

The 118m par-three poses an interesting tee shot over a newly constructed

large pond. A straight shot will miss the large trees to the right and a bunker to the left, not too many problems on a calm day.

With spectacular water views in the background, and the green positioned on a small knoll, the wind factor greatly determines the club selection and can have a dramatic effect on any given day.

The eighth hole at Maramarua requires a long tee shot to the right of a wide fairway.

The fairway has trees on both sides, which protect out of bounds on the far right and a hazard on the left. Shots to the left hand side don’t get a shot at the green as this is blocked by mature pine trees.

Having placed your 220m-plus drive on the right-hand side of the fairway you have a daunting approach shot over a rock-surrounded pond to a two-tiered green.

If the pin is on the top level the landing area is small. Here you will be faced with the decision whether to aim for the top and risk an overshot of play to the lower area and guarantee a difficult two putt.

Either way, it’s one heck of a hole!

Mount Maunganui golf Club 18th Par-4

The 18th green is framed with the superbly designed clubhouse which gives a 180 degree view of the hole from all lounges. The fairway is lined each side with ‘Pohutakawa’ trees, also referred to as the New Zealand Christmas tree as the bright red flowers appear in December

each year. Towering above the clubhouse is Mount Maunganui, or Mauao, is also the name of the extinct volcano which rises above the town. Shrouded in history and legend, the mountain is a dominant feature of the landscape, and a climb to the summit offers amazing views of the surrounding city and ocean.

plays its full distance, particularly if you’re playing into any sort of breeze.

Any errant shot right of the green will bring big trouble, so it’s best to favour the left side of the green.

It is certainly a memorable hole and to make par or better is very satisfying.

THIS feature hole is a relatively easy par five when playing with a southerly breeze but can be a monster during a strong north westerly.

Out of bounds down the right side and evenly spread pot bunkers running down the left side of the fairway stiffen the test.

The well bunkered green has a double

bunker on the right in front of the green with the second bunker hidden from view from the fairway.

The green can be a difficult to hold approach shots down wind and with a narrow entrance into a long two tiered green there is little room for error.

The 15th hole, with its split fairway, offers a delightfully menacing challenge. A solid drive down the left hand side should carry the deep vegetated gully, leaving a mere pitch onto the green. But with the

fairway sloping to the gully it’s not for the faint hearted. Don’t let your eye be caught by the water feature – with water running the entire length of the right hand side you’re left with a narrow landing strip for your Option B. However, even with a gully yet to cross this is by far an easier approach shot to this undulating green.

The Te Puke golf club has been at several locations in its history, but bought its present site in 1978. Golf was first played at Golf Te Puke in 1979.

The trees were planted at this time, and the huge growth reflects the site’s history as an old dairy farm, with residual fertiliser. The Te Puke Golf Course was designed by Harry Dale, who has designed many golf courses in the Bay of Plenty area.

His original concept drawings show that his design has been maintained over the years. Recently there have been some changes under the eye of Denis Clark who has prepared a 20 year plan for the Te Puke golf course’s future development.

GRANT CLEMENTS MEMORIAL

The Grant Clements Memorial Golf Tournament, the 14th in the tournament’s history involving 72 holes stroke play competition held over two days – Saturday and Sunday 8th & 9th February 2014.

The field is made up of 96 players – 84 Men and 12 women players, with the lowest handicap players being selected to compete in what is acknowledged by NZ Golf as one of the top, NZ Amateur golf Stroke Play events.

Since 2006, this event has attracted the top men & women amateur golfers from throughout New Zealand (and some from overseas) with entries received from 130 players or more.

The continued attraction of capacity fields the Tournament is used as a selection event for players for the Srixon Academy and for representative NZ golf teams.

The tournament is strongly supported

by New Zealand Golf High Performance Team managers who require the Academy players to compete and is further supported by the attendance of the NZ Golf selectors.

U19 Junior Kaimai Classic

The sun blessed the 2014 Junior Kaimai Classic played over 72 holes at the Omanu and Mount Maunganui courses on 23rd and 24th January. A quality field of 85, representing 33 clubs took part, but it was the locals who prevailed Jin Hwang (Te Puke) showed that steady and improving rounds wins the day with rounds of 72, 72, 70 and a fine bogey free 67 took the honours with a 7 under par 281. With the first day being windy the scores improved at Omanu on the second day under perfect conditions. While Hwang eventually won by 3 shots the pressure was building in the final round as his fellow Te Puke member Harry Hillier, starting 7 shots in arrears shot a superb 30 for his first nine round to close the gap to 2 at the turn. The pressure of a record score took it’s toll as Hillier shot birdies on the 12th and 13th and eagled the 15th from 80m, but bogied the par three 14th.

TAUPO VETERANS The 2014 Taupo Veternas programme is underway with some fine scoring on the Tauhara Course of the Taupo Golf Club.

A Stableford competition opened the year on our regular Wednesday 8th January, 2014 with top score of 44 by Geoff Burton and Gary Taylor gross of 84 from 45 starters.

A Net medal on 15th saw a field of 53 and a top score of Net 64 by Barry Hickling, with a best gross of 79 by Dick Fraser.

The dry conditions favouring the scores with great course.

The vets full programme for each Wednesday throughout the year always welcomes golfers visiting Taupo. Interclub events with Rotorua & Mt Maunganui are a feature as are the Central North Island interclub with Turangi, Mangakino & Tokoroa and ‘Little” Kinloch are well supported each month.

PLAY GOLF AT ARIKIKAPAKAPA

This recent addition to the week-end of golf, the Men’s Foursomes Championships involves many of the players entered in the Grant Clements Memorial Golf Tournament.

The championship is over 36 holes strokeplay (Gross), played on the Friday 7th February 2014 and has nominated pairings or drawn pairings, all competing for the Championship trophy.

A women’s division has been added and a Net division for club members to be involved with the leading amateurs and provide added interest to the days activity.

MIXED SUMMER CUP The first of 3 Rounds of the Mixed Summer Cup held on Sunday, January 6 at Mt Maunganui Golf Club attracted 23 pairings as they set out to win the 2014 President Cup. 2013 winners Bob & Kathy Ramsay (Canada) were there to defend their title as were the 2012 winners Pam Adlam & Ray Horsfall. Ian & Noreen Nicholls, President of the Club also starting well to make a claim for the trophy.

Best 2 out of 3 rounds of combined stableford decides the winner of the trophy.

A good number of excellent scores were registered, setting a hot pace for the competition with only 6 points separating the top 9 pairings.

Ian & Noreen Nicholls (Ian is the current Club President) with consistent scores of 38/39 – 77 take an early lead over Sandy Long & James Uden with 40/36 – 76 and the 2013 title holders Bob & Kath Ramsay.

Top individual score for the day was by Ken Meikleham with a 47, closely followed

by Brian Peters on 43. 5 players followed with 40 points and another 3 players on each of 39 and 38 points.

Round 2 will be held on January 13th January 2014 and all looks set for a close competition.

Time still with 2 rounds to go for pairs to launch their challenge.

Another good field of 25 pairs played in earnest to put in a second (or for some) a first impressive combined stableford score.

Some exceptional scoring was again the order of the day and new leaders found after Round 1 leaving the trophy wide open for the taking.

50% of the players (women & men) scored par stableford points or better, with 6 on 40 or better.

One exceptionsl score by John Lile of 46 points and his playing partner Lynn Irving 39 points (of Twilght Golf fame), looked fantastic until they discovered they are unable to play the final round.

First round leader Ian & Noreen Nicholls were headed off by 1 point by Caren & Martin Van Der Meys 40/41 – 81 points for a total of 156 after 2 rounds.

Behind them the pecking order changed, meaning that for many plans for the final round next week have needed a slight recalculation.

Sandy Long & James Uden maintained their consistent form to hold 3rd place on 150 points and improving pairs of Bernadette & Trevor Campbell and Helen & Roman Tomson moving up to 4th equal.

2013 winners Canadians, Bob & Kathy Ramsay are sitting on 147 and still with striking distance as are Fran & Ken Meikelheim on 146. Lurking in the shadows we have Judy & Steve Richards with a late entry on 77 which with another good score could frighten the leaders.

A very good final round field of 20 pairs played in perfect golf weather on Sunday, January 19 to attempt to topple the early leading groups.

There was some success but not enough to overcome the main pace setters, Caren & Martin Van Der Meys with their 2 round total of 156, one small point ahead of Noreen &Ian Nicholls.

Some late charges did see the minor places rearranged but were no threat to the leaders.

A strong showing from Julie & John Sheridan saw them move up from 8th to 3rd, and Fran & Ken Meikleham consolidating on their excellent first round of 77

TWILIGHT GOLF A great New Year turnout of enthusiastic golfers saw 94 keen golfers take to the Mount Maunganui Golf Course for the first time in 2014 on Friday, January 3rd.

It was a pleasant evening for players to test out any New Year resolutions or to try out lady luck for the first time for 2014.

27 visiting players (holiday season) helped to swell the numbers and enjoy the fun of Friday evening Twilight golf. Players came from Hamilton, Auckland, South Island, Bay of Plenty and our annual Canadian visitors.

The Men’s section was won by John Trethaway with an astonishing 30 stableford score (4 better than his last 2013 score) clear of Mike Antrobus with 28 and David

Mid-Western Sawmill Building Fund Tournament co-sponsored by Telfer Young Valuers and Dominator Garage Doors.

Congratulations to Tony Mayo who has the honour of achieving the best score for the last competition on the present course, with a great round and a score of 68 off the blue tees.

A hot summer’s day with a welcome sea breeze saw 87 players for the Tournament including visitors from Mangakiekie, Whangarei, Whangaparoa, Sherwood Park, St Clair, and Akarana.

Arthur Parkin, New Zealand Masters representative and a regular visitor to Waipu, scored an impressive two on the 333metre Par 4 10th hole.

WAIPU OPENING DAY

Opening day 8th Feb 2014 will be a big event in the history of Waipu with the much awaited change to the course layout and introduce a new hole.

Visitors are invited to participate in the

opening day challenge to establish a series of new course records and there will be options for all skill levels, with a separate division playing each course.

This challenging par 3, to become the 17th hole in the new layout, has been constructed mainly with the generosity of volunteer labour and donations and although relatively short it features a water hazard on the left and a large undulating green surrounded by dune grasses.

Visitors are invited to participate in the opening day challenge to establish a series of new course records and there will be options for all skill levels, with a separate division playing each course. Phone or email the clubhouse for a tee time and remember to state which course you prefer to play.

North Harbour Juniors On Monday, January 13, the North Harbour Junior Team played against the Jack Newton Junior Team from New South Wales at the Gulf Harbour Country Club.

The mixed North Harbour Team ranged in ages from 9 to 17 fought very hard in windy conditions but were beaten on the day by the very competitive Jack Newton Team, 229 points to 203.

The stand out performances from the Harbour Players came from Jake Meenhorst, Jasper Bengtsson, Ela Grimwood, Anna Reinen and Bohyun Park. This was a great experience for all of the players and we hope to be able to make this an annual event.

Local member, Kevin Hopkinson and Glenda Giddy, Peninsula were the big winners of the Helensville Golf Club’s 2013 Explorer Motor Yachts Series.

The series, one of the club’s major events of the year, is run as the Monthly Open Tournament on the first Thursday of each month with the aggregate score of each players four best cards counting for the major prizes at the end of the year.

The very generous sponsorship by Explorer Motor Yachts is quite significant, with monthly prizes exceeding $1000 in value and the major series prizes (down to 8th in the men’s division and 3rd in the ladies (due to lower ladies turnout) totaling $12,000.

Consistent performances by Hopkinson earned him the nett title and a lavish Harbour Cruise for himself and three friends on an Explorer Motor Yacht, all food and beverage supplied.

Craig Baty, Titirangi, took out the series gross title.

Glenda Giddy dominated the Ladies division winning both the nett and gross titles.

Phil Gilbert, principal of Explorer Motor Yachts expressed his delight at the success of the 2013 series and has committed to backing the series for 2014, which kicks off on Thursday 13th February and then continues on the first Thursday of each month through to the final day on Thursday 4th December.

AUCKLAND GOLF TRAIL KATU BREAKS THROUGH INTERPROVINCIALS It was a mixed bag for North Harbour at the 2013 Interprovincial Championships for both the men’s and women’s team. The men playing at North Shore Golf Club had a mixed week and despite rigorous preparation struggled at times at North Shore.

The standard of golf was exceptionally and in the end the team finished 7th for the week. The women fared better at Muriwai with some fantastic golf from a team containing both a wealth of experience as well as youth. Aviation Country Club member Joceyln Katu scored the best win of her short career when she won the North Island Under 19 Championship played recently at the Ngaruawahia Golf Club. Katu commenced with a round of 2 under 71 to be in second place after the first round but then cemented her claim to the title by posting a second round 71 to lead by 5 shots. The final round was played in difficiult conditions with Katu posting a nine over 82 which was still good enough for a two shot win.

MORRIS HAS CLEAN SWEEP Hamilton golfer Matthew Morris made a clean sweep of the Taranaki Golf three day events with a win in the South Taranaki 54 hole tournament over the new year period. The scratch handicapper shot a three under par total to win the Mitre 10 Mega North Taranaki 54 hole event late last year and backed it up with an even par total in the South Taranaki event to complete the double. Morris shot rounds of 73 at Manaia (two over par), 72 at Te Ngutu (one over par) and a final round of three under par 69 at Hawera. Jamie Clarges (6365-66-194) won the senior men’s net while Drew Rennie took out the best stableford with 122 points. The best gross in the intermediate division went to Mark Morris (81-88-83-254) with Shaun Kalin (64-7070-204) taking out the best net and Joshua Morris the best stableford with 117 points.

The best net in the junior division went to Te Ngutu’s Tom O’Connor (60-63-74-197) with Robin Bloor (89-87-90-266) winning the best gross and Murray Armstrong the

best stableford with 121 points. Taranaki representative Celeste McLean (79-76-74229) won the best women’s gross with Jenni Newland (73-69-74-216) from Patea the best net in the senior women’s division and Michele Furness the best stableford with 110 points. In the junior women’s division, Fiona Taylor (63-62-63-188) took out the best net with Lynne Frank recording the best gross score of 288 and Tui Steele the best stableford with 112 points.

GREAT TURN OUT AT TARANAKI A field of 90 players competed in the Taranaki Golf Centre summer open tournament. The best stableford in the senior men’s division went to Mark Whitaker with 41 points with Stefan Campbell and Ken Jurd on 40 points and Larry Wilson and Mike Earley on 38. The junior men’s division was won by Graeme Milne with 43 points followed by Mike Bracken on 42, Ron Hampersad 41 and Wayne Humphreys and Mark Eichstaedt on 40. The Pro-Am will take place at Manawatu Golf Club on Tuesday 11th February with both a morning and afternoon field. This will be a great event a a great chance to play with a professional or NZ Rep amateur player. Craig Perks will be auctioned separately on Trade Me to try and fetch a premium.

On Wednesday 12th Feb, a very special event will take place, the Horizon Golf Shootout featuring 10 players, of which most will qualify from the Pro-Am round.

This will be filmed to get coverage on Sky Sports Golf Show. The Pro’s will compete for $10,000 for 9 holes of golf. Rangitikei Golf Club epitomises the community spirit at New Zealand’s country golf courses. On the 12th of January Rangitikei experienced the “Shoot Out” format for the first time. The club reports “19 members qualified 12 men and 2 women, teed off at 10.30am to drop off a player one by one each hole, until we got to the sole survivor. To get to the final 2 was full of challenges and pressure. Everyone seemed to be playing out of their skin!!

CANTERBURY GOLF TRAIL TRUST LAUNCH BODES WELL The Canterbury Golf Development Trust formed four and a half years ago was reinvigorated on 28 November with a Launch Event held at the new Christchurch Casino Mashina Lounge. Attended mainly by business people associated with golf, it was a fine way to kick off fund-raising for some ambitious projects the Trust has in mind.

GOLF TRAILS The Trust also intends to start up again the very popular Christchurch Casino Masters Tournament which coincides with the actual Masters at Augusta on 10-13 April 2014.

The unique format developed by Jerry Grocott will add further funds to the coffers.

New Chair Maryanne Marlow has been the driving force behind the Trust’s renewed activity, and she has been ably supported

by Trustees Noel Chambers, Brett Tucker and Jerry Grocott. Their contacts and reach into the Canterbury business community will be instrumental in fostering and realising the Trust’s ambitions.

Their core objective is to “increase participation in golf by Cantabrians”. In the short-term they are looking to assist Canterbury Golf with their Golf in Schools Programme and develop a partnership with The First Tee. At the launch Maryanne spoke of the long-term desire for the Trust to build a golf development and training facility in Christchurch.

Whilst the Trust is independent of Canterbury Golf Inc. and has full control over fund distribution, there is no doubt their objectives align with that of the Association. Having Maryanne Marlow as Vice President of Canterbury Golf also ensures

CANTERBURY MEN RUE MISSED OPPORTUNITIES AT TORO The 3 Under Canterbury Men’s Team played the Toro Interprovincial at North Shore Golf Club on 3-7 December, and missed out on a semi-final berth by the narrowest of margins—half an individual game, after Manawatu-Wanganui, Otago and themselves finished the roundrobin on the same points, necessitating a count-back on individual games won. They ended up finishing sixth.

In hindsight they will rue the missed opportunities to beat Otago, and in particular Manawatu-Wanganui during pool play, and also missed an opportunity to whitewash Poverty 5-0 which most of the other teams did—the dropped game there would have been enough.

Number one, Jordan Bakermans had an outstanding tournament going through winning all his matches against the best from other provinces—Brent McEwan

(Otago), Kadin Neho (Northland), Josh Munn (Manawatu-Wanganui), Blair Riordan (Tasman) and Cam Jones (North Harbour) - most of these NZ Reps. How he didn’t win Player-of-the-Tournament was bewildering, but no doubt he is firmly back in the eye of the NZ Selectors.

Shaun Jones also played well dropping only one game, and Oscar Cadenhead did himself proud in his first Toro. No doubt if the team had been firing on all cylinders a semi-final was well within reach and perhaps a title. We’ll have to wait another year...
