t began with the now world-famous #KogoesPro video with Lydia Ko and All Black Israel Dagg and now New Zealand Golf launches the LOVE Golf campaign. It is the first time that New Zealand Golf has undertaken a nationwide promotion of golf with the aim of the campaign to drive people towards golf club membership and to also promote participation and change perceptions of the national game. Ko and Dagg, who featured in the video, which attracted more than 110,000 views on YouTube and global media interest, are the first of many LOVE Golf ambassadors of people from all walks of life. Jan Rowsell, the Marketing Manager of New Zealand Golf, told Golfer Pacific she hoped that the campaign would be a landmark promotion for golf in New Zealand “We have been working really hard over the last 12 months with the LOVE Golf campaign and we are really excited to launch this initiative which has the potential to change the way people perceive golf,” she said. Rowsell believed the key to the LOVE Golf campaign will be its longevity. “To have an impact of the casual player in New Zealand the LOVE Golf campaign will be on going and have a long term focus of building golf club membership and making the game we all love sustainable for the future.” Rowsell, who has recently taken up golf membership herself after a hockey career that included representing NZ, said there have been challenges in running a nationwide campaign that works for all clubs. “We are fortunate to have many different and unique courses in New Zealand however this creates its challenges when trying to do something nationally that can work for everyone. “Flexibility within the campaign was therefore the key to its success and getting support from the clubs. Feedback so far has been very positive that we have achieved this.” The LOVE Golf website has been created and is designed to be light-hearted, fun and welcoming and to show people just how affordable and accessible being a member of a golf club is. “It highlights how affordable golf can be if you break

membership down to a weekly fee, as gym membership does,” said Rowsell. “The website will also show the public how many different types of membership offerings are available at each club, giving the likes of those with busy schedules and young children the chance to look at memberships that are more tailored to their lifestyle.” The LOVE Golf website will make getting into golf a simple process with a search tool for people to search for memberships and offers.

Every club that signs up for the LOVE Golf campaign will offer golfers an introductory offer of three rounds of golf and a lesson with the club professional (if applicable). Golf clubs will receive access to a LOVE Golf tool kit where they will be able to change out stock imagery for their own use providing clubs with professional marketing collateral which is tailored to their own needs and different offerings. The LOVE Golf brand, which will be used on merchandise, is already in demand and this merchandise will be available soon. Ko and Dagg proved to be the ideal ambassadors for LOVE Golf with their natural camaraderie and banter which many casual golfers can relate to. “We were fortunate to get such a great response to the video we made with Lydia and Israel as our LOVE Golf ambassadors. The chemistry between the two is great and they tell the story of how much fun golf can be and how it can be played by all abilities. “We’re looking forward to adding more LOVE Golf ambassadors from all walks of life as the campaign rolls out and will be looking to use social media as the primary driver to again tell all the wonderful stories about the love of golf.” To view your Golf membership requirements go to www.lovegolf.co.nz

t’s golf’s gulf. The gulf I am talking about is the massive gap between the game’s top earners and the game’s not so top earners. There was a classic example last month. Wellington golfer Gareth Paddison won the Victorian PGA in Melbourne. He beat New Zealand’s No 1 ranked player Michael Hendry into second and the field contained a host of Australia’s and New Zealand’s better golfers. It was far from the biggest golf tournament in the world but Paddison did win and you would expect a healthy return, wouldn’t you? But a healthy return it wasn’t. Paddison’s first prize was $A15,000. With the strong New Zealand dollar that converts to little more than $NZ16,000. Subtract from that figure costs such as airfares, accommodation, entry fee and general expenses and you can see there would not left over. The following week Auckland professional Ryan Fox was second in the Queensland PGA. One day he shot a brilliant nine-under par. All right, he didn’t win but once again the

The yawning gap in golf prizemoney earnings were not high at $A11,400. That’s little more than $NZ12,000. The Victorian PGA and Queensland PGA tournaments are part of the PGA Tour of Australasia. While both events carry little prizemoney they remain important to the players. Each dollar earned aids their chances of retaining the right to play on the tour the following year. And that is important for any aspiring New Zealand or Australian professional. It’s better to have a tour to play on than none at all. The Australasian Tour also provides some richer opportunities later on. It might only have 14 or so tournaments but amongst them are the New Zealand Open, the Australian PGA, the Australian Masters and the Australian Open. They all have purses of around $1 million or more. That brings me to the other end of scale. The world’s richest golf circuit is the PGA

Tour, played mainly in the United States. There’s a tournament virtually every week, not one is worth less than $A1 million, most are $US4-6 million and the PGA Championship carries prizemoney of $US10 million. Tim Wilkinson, from Palmerston North, is on the PGA Tour. The same week Paddison won $A15,000 in the Victoria PGA, Wilkinson played the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Wilkinson finished seventh. He earned $US205,000. That’s nearly $NZ250,000. That’s also golf’s gulf. But not for one moment do I begrudge Wilkinson or any golfer on the PGA Tour at the amount of money they make. It’s an extremely tough tour to compete on and any dollar earned is well earned. You have to play well just to make the cut and when you don’t make the cut your earnings are zero. Gareth Paddison’s $A15,000 is a whole lot better than zero.

Record fifth win on Charles Tour for Holloway

awke’s Bay professional Doug Holloway became the most successful player in the history of The Charles Tour when he won the LawnMaster Classic in Palmerston North. The Charles Tour is a small circuit of New Zealand professional events of which Holloway has now won five. He had previously shared the honour of most wins with New Zealand’s No 1 player Michael Hendry. Holloway, 30, had rounds of 67, 68, 71 and 71 in the LawnMaster Classic for an 11-under par total at the Manawatu Golf Club at Hokowhitu for an impressive wireto-wire win. Holloway finished two strokes clear of Masterton professional Harry Bateman. Sharing third, one shot further back, were Southland No 1 Vaughan McCall, who claimed the leading amateur title, and South Korean professional Dongwoo Kang. Holloway’s fifth win was a long time coming. His fourth win was six years earlier when he took out the Wairakei Open for the third successive year. His other Charles Tour win came in the 2005 Taranaki Open when he was an amateur. Holloway’s first comment after the latest win was: ``It is pretty cool. I made hard work of it today at times but it is a huge thrill to win again on The Charles Tour. ``I had forgotten how hard it is to win

Keh sweeps to victory

unchin Keh completed a memorable come-from-behind win in the women’s section of the LawnMaster Classic at the Manawatu Golf Club in Palmerston North. Keh, 21, from the Titirangi Golf Club in Auckland, began the final round four shots back from overnight leader Tyla Kingi. But a brilliant a five-under 68 saw her sweep to victory by two strokes from Onyou Kim (Gulf Harbour). Alanna Campbell and Kingi, both from Bay of Plenty, finished in a share of third place, two shots back. Tied for fifth were Suyeon Yoon (Gulf Harbour Country Club) and Chantelle Cassidy (Cambridge). But the talking point was Keh’s round that included six birdies and a bogey to win for the third time on The Charles Tour. Keh opened with rounds of 79 and 75 and said that her dramatic improvement came down to course management. ``I played a lot smarter today,” said the New Zealand representative. ``If I got in trouble then I took my medicine. I managed to putt really well and I only dropped one shot all day. It was a good day.” Keh was in a share of the lead with Kim with three holes to play but the latter made

Having to shoot five under to be able to win, it is a good feeling.” Keh, who won two Charles Tour titles in 2013 (Muriwai Open and Carrus Open), said winning on the local tour was always a special feeling. “I didn’t play too good in the first two rounds so to come out today and post a good score to win - I am really happy. It was playing really hard in the first two rounds in the wind.” The New Zealand No 1, who is expected to represent her country at the Espirito Santo World Teams Championship in Japan in September, said it was important to get a win on the board early in the season. She made her first national appearance at the Worlds in Turkey in 2012, alongside Lydia Ko and Emily Perry, and is looking forward to playing the global amateur showpiece again. ``I am looking forward to trying to make the team. The first time around I gained so much experience so hopefully this time around I will be better prepared.”

A decade at the top for McEwan in Otago By Michael Minty

he top end of the New Zealand amateur golf scene is typically dominated by the under 25 age group. But bucking that trend is Dunedin golfer Brent McEwan who has spent the best part of 10 years at the top of the tree in Otago. McEwan, 32, has won every major title in Otago - the Otago Matchplay and Strokeplay, Dunedin Strokeplay, Taieri Classic and an impressive seven North Otago Strokeplay titles, which includes six in a row. He also represented New Zealand over a decade ago and plays at St Clair Golf Club in Dunedin. At one point the Otago No 1 had a brief period in the world’s top 200 amateurs which earned him an invitation to the South Beach International Amateur at Miami Beach in the United States in 2013. But being the best golfer in Otago over a long period of time does not come easy, as every year new challengers emerge. Some are born and bred in Otago, while others come to town from elsewhere for various reasons, particularly to study at the local university. `Ì like the challenge and think it’s healthy for everyone,’’ McEwan said. `Ì don’t feel like I own the number one spot, but definitely not keen on losing it anytime soon.’’ McEwan had his challengers in the past, in particular Thomas Campbell and Duncan Croudis who both represented Otago with him. Campbell and Croudis had the potential to push for the No 1 spot had they not taken up scholarships in the United States. Croudis is playing college golf for Iowa State University while Campbell is now playing professionally on a third tier tour in the US. On a national level, McEwan has regularly figured highly. He is one of few Otago golfers to travel north seeking another level of competition. His accurate driving ability and precise short game means he is consistently on the pace against the best in the country. `Ì’m never too far away and very rarely have any blow-out weeks. You see some guys shoot 15 under one week and then 15 over the next. I’m normally not too far

In 2008 he was dropped from the Interprovincial team after some indiscretions including missing a tee time in the first round of the 2008 Otago Matchplay But in 2009, the desire to get back on track left him hungrier than ever, not just to make the team again but regain the No 1 spot. ``It was a learning curve, it could have gone two ways, I could have thought stuff this and gone on to do different things with my life or I could learn from my experience and how it made me feel and set better examples for people to follow. ``I’m sure everybody has made a mistake at some stage in their life. I got over it, learnt from the experience and moved on.” Ironically one of selectors that sacked

him from the Interprovincial team was Alan Rose who is now his coach, though McEwan says Rose is used more in a consulting role than concentrating on the technical side of the golf swing. ``I bounce ideas off him. I mostly look after myself nowadays, [I’m] not as worried about my technique as when I was younger. I have my basics pretty well under control and concentrate more on getting the ball around the course. ``I think people get too worried about technique at times, get your basics right and the rest just happens, keep a clear mind.” McEwan has not ruled out having a crack at the professional ranks. However he realises that finances may only give him one opportunity. He says if he goes down this path then ideally he wants to commit fully

to a year of practice. ``The desire to turn pro is always there, I would seriously consider it if I ran into some money. Before I even contemplated turning pro though, there would need to be a full year’s practice to get myself up to a competitive level before qualifying school.” But any future plans to turn professional will be put on hold in the meantime as he and fiancée Shannon plan their wedding for August, while also sharing nappy duty with their 16-month old son Jordan. `Ìt’s definitely tough at times giving everything the appropriate amount of time but my work has been very good towards my time off. ``Shannon does a fantastic job with our wee man (Jordan) while I’m away and I know it’s tough on her sometimes not having me around, but she is very supportive of my golf.” Despite having little time to practice, he makes the most of his down time. `Ì would really like to be able to put a lot more time into it, the only practice I get to do is in my lunch breaks and maybe the odd daylight saving night once Jordan has gone to bed. `Ì’m a competitive person and I still see room for improvement. While my body allows me to keep playing the amount of top level golf that is required and the desire is still there I’ll continue to play representative golf.” McEwan looks set be an asset to Otago golf for many years to come, with his experience both on and off the course. He believes the key ingredient to success is a good balance in life, in particular for students finishing high school and entering their next chapter in life. ``The balance between golf and social life can be very tough in your late teens, early twenties, your just starting to make a pathway for your life. ``Friends go in different directions and it is only natural you want to dip your toes in all areas. I encourage people to have a social life away from golf and work, if that is playing a social sport or going for a beer with your mates, everyone needs a release. `Ìt just has to be made with smart choices, know what works for you. Sometimes you will make mistakes along the way, but learn from them.”

Ko bows to Lee’s score of life in NZ Open

n outstanding course record by Mi Hyang Lee of South Korea thwarted Lydia Ko’s bid to win the New Zealand Women’s Open for the second year in a row. Ko won the tournament in 2013 and looked poised to repeat the dose heading into the last of the three rounds at the Clearwater Golf Club in Christchurch. But the party for the local heroine was spoiled by Lee who shot the round or her life to score an amazing nine-under par. She beat Ko by one stroke. Lee, 20, was eight shots from the lead when she began the final round and had not previously won as a professional. The final threesome of Ko and Americans Beth Allen and Anya Alvarez all had the chance to force a playoff on the 54th hole but Allen and Alvarez missed the green and Ko missed her birdie chance from 25 feet. Meanwhile Lee was on the practice putting green, preparing for a play-off when she was informed by her father that she was the New Zealand Open champion. ``I came around to the clubhouse and my dad said `You won’ because Lydia missed a birdie putt and I cannot believe,” Lee recalled. She was surrounded by her former Korean amateur team-mates who poured water

Lee said she did not believe she had a chance to win when she began the final round. Her 63 – which included seven bird-

ies and an eagle – broke the course record of compatriot Seon Woo Bae who shot 64 in the second round of the championship last year. ``It’s my best score in my life and I made the course record too, so I am so happy now,” said Lee who had a world ranking of

I got more confident and I got more good feeling in my golf.” Ko, who wasn’t feeling too good for much of the championship, paid respect to the performance of the winner. `Ì think I played pretty good for my health and obviously Mi Hyang played great as well, 63 is a pretty amazing score,” said the 16-year-old. ``Luckily the winds weren’t up that much the last couple of days. So that gave us more opportunities to go lower but in saying that just because it’s calm doesn’t mean everyone can shoot 63.” Ko, who went into the tournament with a No 4 world ranking, was proud of her effort in her title defence. `Ì’m feeling much better but at the halfway point I got some really bad stomach aches so that didn’t go too well. But our family’s either got the flu bug or stomach bug so it’s not really good right now.

So it also says you’re a little short of coming first but it also means that you’re close and you can do it next time.” Lee was also struggling with a stomach bug for most of the weekend as she struggled with the change in time zones after a 20 hour flight from the Bahamas. `Ì have a stomach ache the last two days and I ate Korean food and it feels better and now it is better. I am not sick.” She got off to a perfect start when she made an eagle from around 20 feet on the second hole and with every birdie she began to believe a win was possible. `Ìt was a good start, but I had to be more confident about my game. Maybe No 14 I saw the scoreboard and I hope I won but the leader is so good player and I think she can win this tournament. ``Trust me. Trust everything and trust your God but most of all trust me. Michael Barltrop keeping it in the family

he name of Barltrop was added to the New Zealand Seniors Championship roll of honour for the sixth time – but this time it wasn’t Rodney Barltrop. Rodney Barltrop, of Wellington, has taken out the over-50s tournament an amazing five times but on this occasion it was his younger brother Michael, from Auckland, who won. The event was played over three rounds for the first time at Omaha Beach Golf Club in Northland and Michael Barltrop snatched victory with a birdie on the last hole. That gave him three rounds of even par 71 which saw him beat Samuel Christie from Australia by one shot. Christie had led the tournament with one-under scores of 70 on each of the first two days but slipped to 74 on the final day. Barltrop, who is a member of Royal Auckland Golf Club, is one of three New Zealand Golf national selectors for men’s teams. Sharing third at Omaha Beach were former New Zealand cricketer Stuart Duff, from Hastings, and defending champion Brent Pater-

son (Royal Auckland). Fifth was Mike Leitch, from Maungakiekie in Auckland. The New Zealand Seniors Championship had a strong international flavour with players from Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, United States, Samoa and Scotland.

The long and winding road from Q-school

n mid-January, 30 would-be professional golfers battled brutal conditions over three windswept rounds at Taupo’s Centennial course in attempting to qualify for a New Zealand PGA Tour card. No player broke par but in the end eight received their cards and entry to the New Zealand Pro-Am circuit. It’s the initial step on a journey thousands of golfers around the world set out on via other qualifying schools, to try and turn their prowess into a living as a professional golfer. Our local Q-school is either the last or first bus stop, depending on your point of view. The last, because it occurs following Q-schools in Europe, the USA, Asia, Japan and Australia have taken place and is therefore the last opportunity for 12 months to pick up a recognised tour card,. Or it is the first because it occurs at the start of the calendar year with a reasonable number of playing opportunities for those who are successful. With

more than 70 players on our circuit competing for total prize money of around $700,000, the chances of making a decent living here from playing professionally are clearly slim. An outstanding season might see earnings of $40,000 or so; typically, the winner of the NZ PGA order of merit (OOM) would earn much less than that. However, winning or placing well up on the OOM does offer entry rights to the New Zealand Open and PGA Championships, as well as a $5000 bonus for the Mondiale OOM winner which can be used to contribute towards the costs of playing in other Q-schools and becoming established on more lucrative circuits. Importantly, playing the local tour gives

exposure to hard competitive golf under tournament conditions, which no amount of practice can replace. Key in this area is the four-round Charles Tour events, of which there will be at least six in 2014. These are played under the same conditions as you would find in higher level tours, on golf courses set up to provide a demanding but fair challenge, with a cut after two rounds and, of course, no pay day for those who miss out. The Charles Tour is also an opportunity for elite amateur players as well as emerging and established professionals to test their ability and potential before committing to the expensive and demanding life of a tournament professional. The NZ Pro-Am circuit and the Charles

Tour have also provided chances for seasoned professionals such as Mark Brown and Josh Geary to re-establish their careers after losing status on other circuits. For others who finished in the top 10 of the OOM in 2013, it gains an automatic start in the 2014 NZ Open and the prospect – if everything clicks that week – of a result that will open doors around the golfing world and of course a pay day that will give that player time and resources to take their game literally to another level. To finish in that top 10, the players will have played not only on courses like Muriwai, Ngamotu, Bridge Pa, St Andrews, Belmont and Harewood, but will also have plied their trade at others like Eketahuna, Hawera, Kaikoura, Martinborough and Rangiora, thus covering the whole spectrum of golf in this country, probably with weather to match. The road from Q-school to Augusta might seem like an impossible dream, but in the words of 2005 graduate Michael Hendry ``dreams can come true”.

Applauding our great coaches H aving attended the Westpac Halberg Awards in mid-February, it was stunning to see how New Zealanders have performed on the world sporting stage. Golf was a big winner on the night, with Lydia Ko taking out the Sports Woman of the Year and Overall Halberg winner. As a PGA Golf Professional, I was very excited to see one of our golf professionals nominated as the Coach of the Year. Unfortunately, Guy Wilson didn’t win and All Blacks coach, Steve Hansen, took out the title. However, it was terrific to see Guy nominated in this category. You may ask “What makes Guy so special”? His major achievement was meeting a six year old girl and spending ten years with her, taking her to become the fourth ranked golfer in the world! Winning backto-back Canadian Women’s Opens and several other Professional titles around the world including last year’s New Zealand Women’s Open, Lydia performed extremely well for someone her age. That

to me is the key marker of a SUCCESSFUL coach. Having spent many hours coaching and developing talent, it really is a great achievement when your players start reaching their goals and start winning. Taking a player who you saw smile with shock when they first hit that long straight shot that went more than 150 metres, or who was stunned when they holed a long putt. It is taking a raw golfer and giving them the skills to play the game at a high level. It’s a bit like when you were at school and you had a favourite teacher. That teacher who was able to motivate you, excite you about the subject and really lead

you on a great journey. That teacher may have actually led you into the occupation you have today, all because you got excited about that certain subject. So what makes a great coach? Is it their knowledge, their patience, their commitment, their communication or enthusiasm or is it some other trait? I actually think it is all of these skills and more. What I have noticed about every great coach I have met (and yes, I include Guy Wilson in this category) is that they do it for the love of it. The joy and love of coaching shines through just like that favourite teacher who clearly loved the subject they taught. No matter whether the coach is teach-

In particular, it is great to see that we have so many talented golf coaches in New Zealand and these coaches are helping to develop even more talented coaches for the future. In truth, 99.5% of all coaches will never receive the recognition they deserve. So I would like to invite you to applaud the coach who teaches and encourages your child, grandchild, niece, nephew or young friend’s game and say “Thanks” for putting in their time for coaching! For without these coaches we would not have our good players, national representatives, event winners and world champions! Every one of our leading sports people at the Halberg Awards had good coaching growing up that enabled them to step up and become world class!

Boulcott’s Farm ready to tee off new holes

ith the recent opening of Royal Wellington’s new 18hole course, hard on its heels comes the introduction of Boulcott’s Farms new holes. The second Wellington club is opening seven of its new 18-holes in mid-April. The redevelopment at Boulcott’s Farm Heritage Golf Club includes the 18-hole course, the construction of a six-hole course along with new practice and coaching facilities. It is hoped the redevelopment along with a new clubhouse and maintenance facility will be completed by December 2016. Opening in mid-April are new course holes one, two, three, four, 14, 15, and 16. The holes include four par fours, one par five and two par threes. Two of the holes will be contesting to be the club’s new signature hole – the par four fourth is 390 metres played into an undulating long narrow green which is protected by bunkers and natural land terrain. The new 14th hole is a 520 metre double dogleg par five. The ap-

proach has been set up to include an undulated fairway along with bunkers and trees being used to protect the green. With all the new holes a sand carpet approach has been built which ensures consistency when playing into the greens. The new 18-hole course when

completed will incorporate a number of the existing Boulcott’s Farm holes along with new tees and greens being constructed across the entire course, while a number of the fairways are also being realigned. All fairways will be re-grassed to achieve a consistent standard across the entire facility.

The course, designed by the Singapore-based course architect Chris Pitman, off the black tees will measure 6260 metres increasing from the current par 70 to par 72 layout. Queenstown based TIC is undertaking the construction work, having previously rebuilt the Royal Welling-

ton course. Boulcott’s Farm Course Manager Brett Burgess said the collaboration across all the parties involved in the redevelopment had enabled the first stage of the work to be completed well ahead of schedule. “I believe the key here has been flexibility, when undertaking a project like this where you have to keep 18-holes open for play, construction programmes tend to be fluid to suit conditions or the maximising of potential opportunities. “The cooperation from design to construction and with our members and others playing the course has been outstanding, now the challenges we have all faced in the past will be confined to history once people start playing the new holes – they look fantastic,” said Burgess. The next stage of the development work is to complete the sixhole course which encompasses four par threes and two par fours, all built to the same USGA standard as applied to the 18-hole course.

Coupled with a larger cavity, Nike’s proprietary NexCOR variable face thickness technology allows for greater ball speed off the face, resulting in more distance. A new leading-edge bevel provides more sole area to hit through the turf. Nike Golf introduces new VRS Covert 2.0 hybrids To kick-start the creation of Nike Golf’s new line of hybrids, Nike Golf engineers re-examined the range of metal woods that golfers have in their bags. From drivers to fairway woods, the club heads decrease in size – and they followed that same strategy with the new range of VRS Covert 2.0 hybrids, available at retail in February, 2014. Tapping into what the engineers at The Oven call “Linear Transition Design”, the club team crafted the VRS Covert 2.0 hybrids with progressively smaller head sizes as loft increases, while increasing the face height on each model. The #2 and #3 hybrids, with larger heads, perform more like fairway woods to advance the ball, while the #4 and #5 hybrids are utilized for approach shots toward the green. Both the VRS Covert 2.0 Tour and VRS Covert 2.0 hybrids feature a Fly-Brace reinforced HighSpeed Cavity back design for longer and straighter shots. The cavity back design improves the moment of inertia and also helps to stiffen the back of the golf club and improve the energy transfer across the club face. “With the new VRS Covert 2.0 hybrids, the longer the shot, the more forgiving the club,” says Tony Dabbs, Nike Golf Global Product Director, Golf Clubs. “When we looked at it, we realized it makes more sense, especially with a #2 and #3 hybrid, to produce ball flight that is more

NORTHLAND GOLF TRAIL CLOSE CONTEST FOR THE FRANK FITCHETT JUNIOR TITLE Northland junior golfers were out in force for the Frank Fitchett Junior Open at the Northern Wairoa Golf Club, the first of two selection events for the Northland Junior Academy this year. Local junior Te Rina Tierney collected the Frank Fitchett trophy presented to the player with the best nett score over the field. The Northern Wairoa junior finished with a nett round of 66 to win by a single shot. Soktaera Sean (Northland) claimed the gross title in the girls division. A personal best round of even par 73 put her one shot ahead of current Northland women’s number one Brook Kingi (Whangaroa). Sean’s win will provide her with a valuable confidence boost heading into the Northland Under 21 Championship at Kerikeri, the second Academy selection event in two weeks’ time. The boy’s competition was close too, requiring a sudden death playoff to decide the gross title. Julian Fowler (Northland) posted the first 73 and was soon joined by club mate Daniel Millett (Northland) playing in the following group who birdied the

eighteenth to set up the playoff. Fowler and Millett returned to the eighteenth tee with Fowler first to play. He immediately found trouble in the right trees while Millett split the fairway leaving just a short wedge to the green. Fowlers approach ran through the back while Millett hit his approach from 70m to within three feet of the hole. A successful up and down by Fowler added some pressure to the short putt faced by Millett who was up to the task, calmly rolling in the birdie and claiming the win. The boy’s nett title went to visitor Oak Archvarin (North Shore) with a score of 67. In second place was Terreance Riini (Whangarei). For the first time the event featured a nine hole Kiwi competition played using the newly established ‘Kiwi Course’ at the Northern Wairoa Golf Club. The shorter course is part of a new initiative at the club to get younger players into the game and increase the enjoyment for youngsters. This saw a number of local kids giving golf a go for the first time. The Kiwi leaderboard was dominated by the girls with Leona Mortimore (Whangarei) first, Kendall Wyatt-Logan (Whangaroa) second and Setiny Pheng (Whangarei) third.

MURIWAI HOSTS MAJOR EVENT The Muriwai Golf Links continues to impress, both in conditioning and layout, and has recently hosted another major national event hosting the Santuary Cove Trophy. This is a head to head battle between New Zealand and Australia’s finest male players over the age of 50. The event held over the 18th and 19th of February comprised of 12 players per team in matches of foursomes, fourball and singles. After losing in the foursomes 4.5 to 1.5 the New Zealand team stormed back in the final two formats, most noticeably the singles on the final day to win the format 9-3 and ultimately win the trophy with a 14.5 to 9.5 victory. Congratulations to the team for a great win and also to Muriwai Golf Links for once again providing an exceptional venue for top level amateur golf.

WAIKATO GOLF TRAIL NEWMONT QUARTZ 4 DAY The 6th annual Newmont Quartz 4 day tournament hosted by Waihi Golf Club was held on the 2nd and 5th of January. The tournament attracted a field of 115 players, both men and women, from 37 clubs throughout New Zealand, along with 2 players from Australian clubs. The handicaps ranged from 0.5 upwards with one third of the field having handicaps lower than 10. The weather conditions were excellent for all but the last 2 hours of play on the Sunday, and as with previous year’s, the course was presented in an immaculate and challenging condition. The eventual stableford winner over the 4 days with a total score of 160 points was James McHardy. The runner-up was Mark Green with 156 points. Both players are from the Waihi Golf Club. The gross winner was Lincoln Drent,

also from the Waihi club, with four consistent rounds of 76, for a total of 296. The runner-up was Rob Noffke from the Waitakere Golf Club in Auckland with a total of 298. The teams event went to ‘gaff’ which comprised of Lincoln Drent, Jason Baldwin, Mark Green & Andy Roche, all members of the Waihi Golf Club, where 3 out of the 4 best scores count each day and accumulate until day 4. BAY OF PLENTY GOLF TRAIL EVES 5 COURSE CLASSIC The 2014 Eves 5 Course Golf Classic was played in the Western Bay of Plenty from 27 – 31 January. This is a 90 Hole Stableford Tournament for amateur players is in its 19th year and with 412 confirmed entries, was the most successful in recent years. The tournament entries are divided into four playing groups, with each Group playing each course once (There is a bye for one of the five courses on each day). Players from as far afield as Canada, Cook Islands, United Kingdom and again a large representation from Australia entered the event. There were around 30% of New Zealand Golf Clubs represented with the strongest representation coming from Peninsula, Redwood Park and Judgeford Golf Clubs. This was the second year that the tournament had a pre-tournament function. This was attended by 70 players as well as a representation from Eves and some of the host clubs. This function was introduced in 2013 so players could meeting new and catch up with old friends and was enjoyed by all. Prizes are awarded in three Mens and two Women’s Handicap Grades, and the overall prize pool, daily prizes and player gifts for 2014 exceeds a retail value in excess of $36,000. A large number of the players in the Classic have not missed a tournament, and the majority have played at least once prior. Olivier Peres, a member of the La Ouenghi Golf Club, currently the highest-ranking senior player in New Caledonia, took out the coveted Air New Zealand Trophy with an impressive win over the defending champion, Rod McBride (Port Kembla GC), 6/5. The 2014 Championship was played in a new format on multiple courses, seeded match play from round one. The tournament played two rounds on Taupo’s Centennial course and two rounds on the shorter Tauhara course. Peres was seeded 4th in the top division, meeting Bill Barber from Manawatu in the first round, which he secured 4/3. His next win was over Manor Park’s Richard Gibbs 6/5, before he met one of the ‘masters of the short game’ as he acknowledged at the prize giving event, Peter Rankin, also a member of Manor Park. Rankin who was previously a member of Royal Wellington with a long history of representing his district, was the top seed going into the championship, but lost to Peres 4/2 in a close battle. Miguel Sobrino, from Reefton GC, won the men’s second division, competing for the DB Trophy in handicap match play, with the runner up being Ron Gold from Howick. Sobrino had won this final, 5/4. The plate was awarded to Ross Moreton from Boulcotts Farm. Clarks’ Beach, Colin Bava won the Te Awamutu Trophy, in the men’s 3rd division, in a close battle against Vice President of the New Zealand Senior Golfers Association, Keith Hickman, 1up. Hickman is a member of the Levin Golf Club. The plate was won by Manukau’s Tim Reehal. In the special men’s Super Seniors Division, for players over 75, Gordon Taylor from the UK with a New Zealand membership at Whangaparaoa, won this division. Taylor had faced off in his final against Bill Baillie, from Maungakiekie, with a 3/2 win. Baillie is perhaps better known for his exploits on the athletic track. An Olympian, Baillie finished 6th on the 5000m track at the 1964 Olympics in Tokoyo and still holds the national record for the 20000m run. In addition to his Olympics debut, he represented New Zealand at the 1954, 1958, 1962 and 1966 Commonwealth

Games. The plate winner in the Super Seniors was Bill Platt, from Manor Park. For the third year running the tournament included women’s competition with the top division being won by Ann Hogg from Levin. Hogg had a good win over Beryl MacLeod from Sherwood Park, 7/6. Helen Beaurepaire, (Waiuku GC) won the plate in this division. Local Jill Lloyd, who is a member of the Wairakei Golf Club, won the second division 4/2 over Rosalie Groom, who is a member of the Howick Golf Club. Marilyn Christ from Australia’s Townsville GC won the plate. Competitors were also invited to compete in an optional stroke play 18 hole round at the nearby Turangi Golf Club. Peter Rankin, while not able to get into the final of the match play competition took line honours with an impressive round of 71, one under his age during the midweek Stroke competition. Best net in the men was awarded to Ray Howarth (Springfield) with a net 70, and Patrice Hasaani (New Caledonia) won the best stableford with 36 points. Jill Blenkey from Australia’s Newcastle had the best gross round in the women, 75 with Matamata’s club member Chris MacKenzie winning the best net, with a 73. Bailey Smith (Mount Maunganui) and Compton Pikari (Te Awamutu) and (both pictured) successfully defended their New Zealand Foursomes 2013 title at the Mount Maunganui Golf Club on Friday 7th February 2014. 39 pairs took part in the Foursomes Championships with a very good line up of players looking to win this New Zealand title. Starting with a par round on 72 Smith & Pikari set a target for the field only to find there were some serious challengers at their heels. A 68 by Lee Neuman (Northalnd) & Nick Coxan (Narrows) signalled their intentions by taking a 2 shot lead into the afternoon, closely followed by the pairings of Mark Brooks & James Anstiss (Otago) and Denzel Ieremia (Hamilton) & Brad Kendall (Mt Maunganui) with scores of 70 and a 72 by Tyson Tawera & Russell Mitchell (Napier). The Canterbury pairing of Oscar Cadenhead & Jordan Bakermans returned a 73. Then came the afternoon and a bit of moisture to change things. A final round charge by Pikari/Smith

placed a 68 gross (included 6 birdies) to set the target at 140 gross. Brooks/Anstiss (Otago) with a 71 for a total of 141 saw them I shot behind as were Neuman/Coxan after a 73 afternoon score. Ieremia/Kendall close behind on 142 and Cadenhead/Bakermans on 143. The NZ Foursomes Trophy has a great history featuring top golfers and golfing feats, including J.P. Mortland (a cousin of a club member) won the trophy 3 years in succession, 1934, 1935 & 1936 – A different partner with each win. Bay of Plenty players who feature as co winners of the trophy, include Owen Kendall and M Nicholson. So the trophy is again safely tucked away in the Mount Maunganui/Te Awamutu lockers until 2015 when the holders intend to again defend their title for a third time.

DISTRICT TEAMS COMPETITION Nine teams competed for the Teams Trophy in what was close from Round 1. North Harbour (Tadgh Campbell/Cameron Jones) took a 1 shot lead after the first round on 142 with Bay of Plenty (Davis/ Beard) and Waikato (Coxon/Ieremia) both with 143. Our top juniors have made a great start to 2014 with 15 year old Alanna Campbell winning the Victoria Junior Masters and Bailey Smith winning the South Australia Junior Championship. Bailey had more success in winning the Grant Clement Memorial Tournament of his home course of Mount Maunganui by winning a sudden death play-off over fellow Mountie Hayden Beard and Lochiel‘s Sam Vincent. More good news came when Charlie Hillier won the New Zealand Under 19’s Championship by 4 shots the same week that 14 year old Tyla Kingi took out the National Maori Women’s Championship. Tyla and Alanna finished 3rd at the Charles Tour Lawnmaster Classic at Hokowhitu to add to their earlier success. Landyn Edwards made a welcome return to tournament golf by taking out the Danny Lee Open at Springfield from fellow Bay representative Victor Janin. Bay of Plenty Golf bid farewell and thanks to Peter Lee and Victor Janin who successfully gained their professional cards at the end of January. Peter and Victor have been great contributors to Bay of Plenty and we wish them every success with their professional careers.

With their departure there is opportunity for the younger brigade to stake a claim for a top six spot so it will be interesting to see who emerges to the fore with the likely frontrunners being Charlie Hillier, Tyler King and Bailey Smith. The 2014 Pennant Competition is underway with 65 teams playing in various zones and divisions. Once again the Championship Division will see Tauranga and Mount Maunganui as favourites in the battle for the Black Pennant when the finals come around at the end of May. On a sad note Tony Hewlett who was one of the heroes of our successful Masters team collapsed and died whilst playing on his beloved Omokoroa course just after Christmas. Tony worked incredibly hard to prepare for the Freyberg last year and was the rock of our team so will be sadly missed.

TWILIGHT GOLF Competing events saw a reduced field of 23 players venture out to play a winning round of 12 holes of golf at Mt Manganui Golf Club. The Eves 5 Course Classic involved golf in the morning over the various courses involved and followed by the prize giving for the 400+ competitors – so a good turn-out really. Apart from the one good women’s score – Faye Freelan 28 points 23 was next best while some of the men had little trouble with the course with 3 scoring 28 or better. There is no Twilight Golf on Friday 7th February due to the NZ Men’s Foursomes and Grant Clements 72 Hole Stroke play events. Results:- Faye Freelan 28/Jim Shabbits 29; Lynn Irving 23/Zane Winslade 29; Sandra Winhoven 23/Craig Edlin 28 45 players played the course following a rest due to the 5 Course Classic and the Grant Clements 72 Hole Tournaments. Good weather persists as does the heat plus some very good scoring. The high scores continued with countbacks required in both divisions. Peter Watson followed up his last 28 points with 30 points to win the Men’s division just ahead of Zane Winslade on 29. Sandra Winhiven with a 27 won the Women’s Division 3 shots ahead of a group on 24. HISTORY OF THE OTUMOETAI GOLF CLUB - 50th Jubilee The start actually reaches back over 50 years ago. A group of enthusiasts who set up the now defunct Te Pun Golf Club in 1932 was the real starting point. In the 1950’s after being sited on many farms the then farmer wished to sever ties with the club. In 1953 the Tauranga Borough Council was in the process of setting up a 9-hole

public course on a former dairy farm in Bureta. In 1956 the public course was opened and some of the Te Puna enthusiasts took up residence. As the link to greater Tauranga was at this time via Judea, the Te Puna club struggled to keep up a viable membership and by 1964 the club folded. The council at this time suggested to the Otumoetai rate-payers that the reserve could become a park, including a lake similar to that at Pukekura Park in New Plymouth. Several residents objected strongly to the creation of a mosquito home in their area and strongly fought for a municipal golf course, which consequently won the day with the Council. The newly formed Otumoetai Golf Club elected its inaugural committee in May 1964, and immediately started competition for some trophies inherited from the defunct Te Puna club. Many of these trophies are still competed for today. The clubhouse at this time was a small wooden hut. There were 25 financial members, 11 women and 14 men, operating only on Saturdays with no sexual discrimination in the makeup of fours! Segregation came with increased numbers and affiliation with the NZLGU and NZGA in 1967, and competitions were played on a more formal basis. The clubhouse was also extended this year to include some very basic kitchen facilities. A formal ladies club was formed in 1968, with Tuesday play. Green fees at this time were 2 shillings for 9 holes and 3 shillings for 18. The golf balls cost 15 cents! The club took over a lease for the grounds in 1969, and this included them having to take over the maintenance of the course with their own green-keeper. The club had already put in a huge amount of work on drainage and development of the course and much more was to follow. Over 12000 yards of topsoil was bulldozed from the left side of today’s number 6 fairway to fill some of the more low-lying areas of the course. The club progressed quickly over the next few years to include junior sections, many clubhouse and course improvements, with the present clubhouse being built in 1978. By the 25th jubilee in 1989 the club had nearly 400 members. In the next 25 years the club has been

highly active in all aspects of golf in the Bay of Plenty. We have always had a strong junior section and regularly won the annual ‘Top of the Harbour’ trophy contested by all the bay clubs. We have a very strong Men’s Vets section, with 50+ turnouts every Wednesday in the season. They have recently included the Women’s Vets section in their Wednesday draw. The Women’s section has two playing days to accommodate those women unable to play on Tuesdays. The numbers here have dropped off in latter years with the rise of the 9-Hole golf phenomenon, which with our course being 9 holes has fitted well with the move for a shorter version of the game for people with limited time or physical ability. This has been a growth area of the club. The Men’s section reached a peak of 100 players regularly on Saturdays, which taxed the limitations of the course, but has dropped a little recently in line with the trends throughout the country. The 2005 floods were one of the reasons for this drop. Several members chose to change clubs at this time as they saw this event as spoiling their chances of playing golf with wet feet! But this has not happened. With all the major earth works and drainage initiatives undertaken as a result of the devastation caused by the floods, the course now drains quickly and efficiently in under 24 hours from a major rainfall and very few playing days have to be forfeited. Much of the work, just as it was in the early years, is done by members giving their time and money to make the many improvements. Hundreds of voluntary hour have been, and are being, given to ensure that the course and the facilities are up to the standard of any course in the country, and the members are rightly proud of what they now have. The club has been a welcome addition to the social fabric of the Otumoetai, and wider Tauranga, community, with the wonderful camaraderie and facilities. Over the years many of the junior golfers who began their golf education with the Otumoetai Golf Club have gone on to Bay of Plenty success. Unfortunately for this small club, these young players must look to their own needs and nearly all have moved on

to other clubs to get the challenges that a longer course might offer. It is debatable if the longer courses offer a greater golfing challenge, as the small greens of Otumoetai and its easy access within the community has meant that these juniors have honed their short games with hours and hours of practice in and around the small greens. The course record on the current par 67 layout is only 63 for professionals, by Rick Barker who was a resident professional at the club for a short period, which is testament to the challenges that even a short 9-hole course can provide. One of the juniors, Matthew Jupp, shot a 61 in 2004 as the official course record. Our most famous export is most definitely Josh Geary, one of New Zealand’s current stable of professionals, who is currently performing well on the US Tour and who regularly returns to Otumoetai where he has family still playing. The club is thankful for the legions of volunteers who over the years have done so much to ensure that the course and facilities are presented in top condition all year round. We are spoilt in that we have grass all year, with no need to have fairway watering, and members often struggle at other courses in the summer because of the way that they dry out so much. The many hours of work required in the early days to install an extensive drainage system and remove the myriad stones on the course, to the continued input by members into such improvements as the new 7/16th tees, tree removal and replanting, mowing the rougher areas of the course, formation and tending of the many garden areas around the course, painting and improvements to the clubhouse, sanding and helping with the coring of the greens twice a year, and so on, is never ending and the members are always willing to assist in these endeavours. The course has never looked so good as it does in this, our 50th year, and congratulations must go to the green staff we have had over the years, particularly Ces Morrell, who was the green-keeper for over 30 years and received a Distinguished Service Award from the New Zealand Golf Course Superintendents Association in 2010, and the current green-keeper Rich-

TARANAKI GOLF TRAIL LAWNMASTER CLASSIC Dominic Barson (69-73-69-70-281) was the best of the Taranaki players competing in the Lawnmaster Classic played at the Manawatu Golf Club last month. The New Plymouth professional shot a seven under par total for the 72 hole event to finish in fifth position, four shots behind tournament winner Doug Holloway. Taranaki’s top amateur, Brad Hayward (74-74-73-70291) finished 20th equal, one shot ahead of New Plymouth professional Grant Moorhead (72-75-75-70-292) who finished in a tie for 22nd. Taranaki women representatives Celeste Mclean (87-77-164) and Holly Winter (89-84-173) both failed to make the 36 hole cut.

NZ SENIORS STROKEPLAY New Plymouth golfer Murray Martin (75-74-75-224) finished 14th = at the New Zealand Seniors (55 and over) Strokeplay Championship which was played at the Omaha Beach Golf Club last last month. The 54 hole event was won by Michael Baltrop (71-71-71-213) who shot an even par total to edge out Samuel Christie (7070-74-214) from Australia with a further

shot back to Brent Paterson (72-70-73-215) from Auckland and Stuart Duff (73-69-73215) from Hawkes Bay. Westown Classic champion Kerry Otene recently won the Coastal Strokeplay Championship, 63 years after his grandfather Heck won the inaugural event in 1951. A feature of the 27 hole event played at the Pungarehu Golf Club was a hole in one scored by Paul Haskell from The Golf Zone. Haskell, who also sponsors the Pungarehu Golf Club used a nine iron to hole out on the 145 metre par three 6th hole. Major winners of the Coastal Championships were: Senior men – Gross- Kerry Otene 102; Intermediate Gross –Allen Rothwell 116; Junior Gross- Chad Knowles 125; Limit Gross- Graham Gardner 129; WomenSenior Gross-Sharon Adamson 123; Junior Gross- Susan Crowley 144.

On Waitangi Day, Pungarehu Golf Club held it’s annual “Golf Zone 27 holes Coastal Champs” This unique 27 hole tournament was first played in 1951 and won by Heck Otene, the grandfather of Kerry Otene, the 2014 winner for the men’s division 1 section. The tournament has been played every year since 1951. A special day for our sponsor Paul Haskell from “Golf Zone” as he scored his first “hole in one” on the 6th hole, 145metres using a 9 iron.

GOLF TRAILS TARANAKI HANDICAP PENNANT The first round of the 2014 Taranaki men’s handicap pennant competition was played last month. The Dow AgroSciences sponsored event has attracted 23 club teams with 12 teams competing in the North Taranaki section and 11 in the Taranaki wide section. Defending champions Waverley got off to a perfect start with a convincing 6 ½ – 2 ½ win over Te Ngutu while other notable results in the Taranaki wide section played at Waverley saw Pungarehu beat Opunake 6-3 and Stratford toppled Fitzroy Two 6-3. In North Taranaki section matches played at New Plymouth, Manukorihi Two were impressive 7-2 winners over Waitara One while New Plymouth managed a rare win by edging out Kaitake One 5-4.

NZPGA TOURNAMENT BEGINS Taranaki professionals were in action last month with the start of the 2014 NZPGA tournament schedule. The $20,000 Eketahuna / Masterton Pro-am was won by Josh Geary (65-67-132) who shot a 10 under total for the 36 hole event. Taranaki professional scores and positions were: Grant Moorhead (73-67-1409th=), Dominic Barson (70-71-141-13th=), Patrick Moore (71-73-144-21st=, Blake Cowley 76-76-152-34th). JONES ON A ROLL Beating your age is no mean feat but New Plymouth Golf Club member Bill Jones has done it twice since the start of last month. On the 1st February the 79 year old shot a four over par round of 76 at his home course but last Wednesday the 10 handicapper went three better to beat his age by an impressive six shots. Jones shot a one over par round of 73 at Ngamotu to record 45 stableford points and take out top prize in the Crowded House Bar & Café Wednesday club competition. HAWKE’S BAY POVERTY BAY GOLF TRAIL HASTINGS OPEN SUCCESS The revamped Hastings PAK’nSAVE Open held at Bridge Pa on 1st & 2nd February saw a large number of participants from all over the North Island. The field of 89 played in three divisions; Men Elite (black tees) & Premier (blue tees) and a women’s division. The format was changed significantly to what was played in previous years and Club Captain Kris Bower was delighted with the number of players. “The change

Bower goes on to say “the club had to change its tournament formats to continue to attract the numbers, it’s not the same old tournaments anymore, and we need to cater for all golfers”. The shotgun format saw all players gather together both days in the clubhouse for lunch, which was included within the tournament entry fee. This also provided a full clubhouse for prize giving to acknowledge all winners. The Club was delighted to have local sponsorship from Hastings PAK’nSAVE for the first time this year and also acknowledges continued sponsorship from Lion, who have had a longstanding relationship with the Club. A FUN WAITANGI DAY Hastings Golf Club and Hawke’s Bay Golf Club got together for a two course composite competition encompassing the back 9s at each course. Played on Waitangi Day, it was literally a ‘jump the fence’ to play golf day. With 124 participants and a prize table worth in excess of $3,500 there was lots of energy and buzz around prior to tee off. The idea was thought up by Hastings Golf Club’s golf committee member Steve Dunworth and with his guidance and that of Allen Connor of Hawke’s Bay Golf Club; the SpecialTee Golf Proshop team had everyone ready to go for a 12:30 shotgun start. Everything went smoothly to plan- even if some last minute instructions had to be given on how to play the combined course and where to write each score! It was a great day and with the packed clubhouse at Hastings Golf Club for the prize giving it appeared fun was had by all. The team involved want to thank all the participants and we are looking forward to making this an annual event with the thought of expanding to use both 9s on each course a real chance given how many people we had to turn away as the field was full. 

MANAWATU WANGANUI GOLF TRAIL

NEW COURSE FOR PALMERSTON In late 2013 Manawatu’s newest golf facility opened its facilities for golfers to enjoy. The Orlando Country course is situated just 1.5km from the city boundary on Rangitikei Line. The course was designed by course architect Tommy Cusnahan. While the course is short with six par 3’s and three par 4’s, it is by no means a simple test of golf. Cleverly positioned ridges, swales and water hazards, combined with the frequent Manawatu wind, is sure to be fun, but provide a test to all level of player. The facility should provide for a relatively quick game of golf, which caters nicely to players that find time to be their main obstacle to participating regularly. The lodge, or “Lake House” as it will be known, is due for completion shortly. This facility will be aimed at accommodating functions, including weddings and corporate days, where guests can also make use of the golfing facilities. Orlando also features a driving range and café which is sure to be popular among visitors.

COBRA/PUMA CHAMPIONSHIPS The annual Manawatu Wanganui Age Group Champs took place in January at Palmerston North Golf Club. The 36 hole event attracted a good field of players covering 5 different divisions. The morning round was played in ideal scoring conditions. Rhys Harold (Palmerston North GC) carded a 2 under par 70 to lead the boys field by two shots over Regan McConaghty (Manawatu GC). Brydie Hodge (Levin) carded a 4 under par round of 70 to lead the girls field by a massive eight shots. The boys competition became very close during round two, and four players, Rhys Harold, Josh Sedgwick, Michael Birchall and Nic Quantock-Holmes, all finished within two shots of eventual winner Regan McConaghty. Brydie Hodge cruised to victory in the girls section by 7 shots over Emma Clayton. Brydie won the Eagles Cup for the 2nd straight year. Greg Shaw (Manawatu GC) was the winner of the Silk Cup for Under 16 boys, by two shots from

Liam Finlayson (Feilding GC). Feilding player Jack Waller-Mott was the winner of the Under 13 boys division. It was great to see some excellent performances from other up and coming players highlighted by 10 year old Tara Raj shooting her best ever round, an 87, in the afternoon. Young Manawatu player Kaleb Idemaru shooting 80 for a net 63 in the afternoon was another impressive round. Special thanks go out to Cobra/Puma for helping provide an excellent prize table, with all participants taking home a prize.

RAISING FUNDS FOR CHARITY AT WANGANUI GOLF CLUB One great aspect of golf is the amount of fundraising that takes place to benefit many worthy Charities. On Waitangi Day Thursday 6 February the Wanganui Golf Club held a very successful Golf Tournament to raise funds for Relay For Life. They have entered a team of 12 for the 24 Hour Relay, called ‘Belmont Golfers’. Over 100 starters in the field and 20 nine hole players also. The Clubhouse was decorated with purple flowers and balloons for the prizegiving. $1500 was raised for the Relay for Life. Thanks to sponsors Mitre 10, New World Supermarket and the Polkinghorne family.

He played the final three holes, a par 5, a par 3 and a par 4, in only 9 shots.[1] He was the 2002 New Zealand Sportsman of the Year. It remains his only win on the PGA Tour, and after making only one cut on the PGA Tour during 2006 and 2007, he announced his retirement in November 2007. Craig William Perks is a professional golfer who was born in Palmerston North. He played college golf at University of Oklahoma and University of Southwestern Louisiana in the United States. Craig has indicated he will return to the Rangitikei Golf Club later in the year. Other celebrities to visit Rangitikei Golf club include two of New Zealand’s favourite comedians Mike King and Ewen Gilmour. The club continues to be preferred for group bookings. Last month saw some large groups come out to play. On Friday 7th March is Ladies Open Day 8 iron Tournament, which is always great fun. HILLIER ADDS TO GROWING LIST OF TROPHIES Manor Park golfer Daniel Hillier has bounded towards the head of the Wellington order of merit table after winning the Oliver Cup at Manor Park on Waitangi Day, February 6. Hillier, 15, set up the victory with a brilliant two-under 69 in the morning round, which included six birdies. In the afternoon round, Daniel had a three-over 74 but that was sufficient to win easily by three strokes from former Manawatu player Hayden Ring.

The Oliver Cup is Manor Park’s feature limited handicap event and names on the trophy that Hillier collected at the end of the day include the likes of Bob Charles (1956). Daniel has now won two Wellington Order-Of-Merit tournaments this year. The first came in the Te Marua Masters when he included a course record six-under 65. He will now be near the top of the Order Of Merit table, which is headed by Thomas Spearman-Burn who did not play at Manor Park. Daniel has had a good summer. Between his wins at Te Marua and Manor Park he came back from a disappointing opening round at the North Island under-19 championship to finish fourth with an equal best final round of even par 72.

Firm underfoot conditions, a course looking as well as it has ever looked and a brilliantly fine weekend set the tone for the 2014 Speights Westland Classic. These factors, coupled with the thrilling sudden death playoff between Peter Fox Templeton) and Greymouth’s own Wayne Robbins (pictured) in the Senior division in the battle for the coveted Westland Classic Trophy combined to make the event held at Greymouth’s Kaiata Golf Course a memorable one. It will certainly be memorable for eventual winner Wayne Robbins. After trailing Templeton’s Peter Fox on the first days play by 3 shots after Fox had shot a fine 68 in the first round, Robbins clawed his way back into contention with a further 71 to complement the same score on Saturday, while Fox dropped a couple of shots to par in Sunday’s round. Both players registered combined 36 hole gross scores of 142, two under par. At the first playoff hole, the short 16th par 3 of 117 m, Robbins hit his tee shot just past the pin on the right, leaving a putt of approximately 4 metres. Fox’s tee shot was directly at the flag, but just short of the green. His attempted put from the edge of the green slid just past the right side of

the cup, while Robbins’ found the bottom of the cup for a birdie and a long overdue win in this event, where he has previously been runner up 5 times, and third on another occasion. These efforts have included being on the wrong end of at one playoff requiring 6 extra holes. In a particularly moving acceptance speech, Robbins dedicated hiswin to the Club’s former hard working and good friend Club Captain David Warnes, who had passed away unexpectedly during 2013 at a young age. In the other men’s grades, Greymouth’s Liam Beirne, a promising schoolboy intermediate, took out the best men’s nett 36 holes across all men’s grades with a net score of 129, comprising a fine 76 off the bat on Saturday for a net 63. He followed this up with an excellent 79 on Sunday for a net 66, and a win by 2 shots over long time hole sponsor and grand supporter of the Club Todd Heller. In the women’s grade, another, local Nancy Watson took out the 36 holes best net, while Club President Paul Watson came to the fore in winning the Junior Best net 36 holes, and making it a memorable family weekend. A feature of the weekend was also the gifting of a fine silver jug for women’s competition by long time supporter of Greymouth Golf, Penny Robertson – Crowe., who presently lives in Christchurch. While Penny wasn’t well enough to make the trip to present the trophy herself, her Russley clubmates Bev and Maurice Ford, and brother Ian were on hand to do the honours. This year more than a dozen players joined the tournament from Australia and enjoyed all aspects of golf and social activities, which included a fine dinner on Saturday evening and culminated in the farewell afternoon tea featuring the tournament’s traditional whitebait patties. They have promised to return, and bring their friends.

INTERCLUB WINNERS Christchurch were the overall victors in the Team Gross section of the Over 50’s and 60’s Men’s Interclub competition, held at Amberley Golf Club on Sunday 16 February in superb weather. They finished up with a 6 round aggregate of 1418 with Tai Tapu coming in next with a combined aggregate of 1443. Amberley took out the Team Net in the Over 50’s with 1289 and Bottle Lake B in the Over 60’s with 1276. In the individual competition, Tala Natapu (Amberley) won the Individual Gross (Best 4 of 6 Rounds) with 302 and Ian Fowler (McLeans Island A) won the Individual Net (Best 4 of 6 Rounds) with 272. For the second year running, James Angus (Coringa) reigned supreme in the “Super Seniors” with 244...age really does count in this section!

Queenstown’s Millbrook Resort is buzzing with anticipation as it prepares to showcase its stunning 27-hole golf course during the NZ Open later this month. Up to 200 staff work daily to keep the fivestar resort ‘humming’, and it’s also a hive of activity in other – less immediately obvious – ways with building and development activity seeing 21 houses under construction, major earthworks underway, and up to 500 other construction industry staff employed indirectly at the property on a daily basis. The building and development boom is being driven by increased business confidence, ‘flying’ sales figures in December and January, and properties being bought off the plans by investors and would-be residents. “It’s fair to say that after a slow start to our

financial year from October 2013 the resort has been simply humming since the lead up to Christmas,” said Millbrook Property and Development Manager Ben O’Malley. “Construction of an $8m, 23-lot subdivision started in late December, and we’ve had $23m of offers on properties, resulting in $13.8m of sales in the last four months since the start of our financial year. “We’ve seen multiple offers on certain property types, both in new sales and resales, and of nine sales so far, seven of them have been Kiwis. “The number of people working on and around our 500-acre site is impressive, with ten private homes and 11 Millbrook properties. “The beauty of Millbrook’s wide open green spaces is that largely members of the public don’t see that hive of activity which is to a great degree behind the scenes. “It does mean though that Millbrook is a very major employer in the district and I’d have to say that this is on a par with one of our busiest times ever. “With the level of development and confidence we’re seeing in Millbrook at the moment, combined with the exposure it’s about to receive nationwide and international coverage through Sky Sports it’s a good sign that after 21 years, Millbrook has truly come of age.” Mr O’Malley said that the returning trend of buying off the plans was particularly pleasing. “It demonstrates better than anything else that Millbrook’s reputation for quality, combined with a community spirit that makes it THE place to live in the Wakatipu Basin, now precedes it. “Buyers know we’re going to deliver what we say we’re going to do because they only have to look around them to see the highest levels of quality combined with diverse products that meet market demand, whether it’s a family home, a holiday house or investment. “In recent months some buyers of re-sales and new sales have been in competitive situations with other buyers, which has required them to pay over the asking price to secure their dream property. “We’re seeing a gradual increase in the number of people living permanently at the resort, or those who are buying with a view to living here permanently in the future. “In some cases there are generations of families now living the ultimate Millbrook lifestyle.” Earthworks on the next 23-lot Stage 3B development overlooking the fourth fairway of the Coronet Nine golf course are scheduled to be completed by March 2015. “Queenstown’s one of the greatest places in New Zealand to own a second home, holiday home, or to live and work permanently, especially as internet accessibility improves,” said Mr O’Malley. He said the Millbrook lifestyle appealed very strongly to the family market in particular which had experienced good percentage growth. “I’ve said before that we have the confidence to continue construction at a faster pace than ever before and 2014 is certainly proving us right.” A Coronet Square show home is currently open for viewing at Millbrook, and a new Ski Barn will open in April as a show home. MIXED OPEN DAY AT WAIPU The Mixed Open Day at Waipu Golf Club was held on Saturday, February 8. The new course layout was played for the first time and incorporated the new 17th hole. This gave the opportunity for members to play the lie and have a try for the Course Record. There was a field of 90 players. Patron Rod McKay teed the first ball off and members and visitors “played the lie” to create course records on all 5 rated courses. All records were achieved by Waipu members. Men’s Championship Black tees honour was shared between Sheldon Kearns last year’s Northland overall Champion and Braden Keown of the Whangarei Boys High School winning team with a 74. Ex New Zealand representative player Terry Pulman took the Blue with 77 and the White went to Napo Henare with 85. Ladies yellow course was taken by Jo Taylor (pictured) and as none of the single figure players opted to play the ladies white championship course, three mid handicappers took on the challenge. The dry conditions made “play the lie” extremely difficult and this record stands at 102. Recent rain has brought the fairways back to life and the new course layout is a pleasure to play.

GRANT CLEMENTS MEMORIAL Planned as a 72 hole stroke play event, heavy and wet course conditions on Saturday morning from overnight rain meant that round 1 of the tournament was cancelled and reduced to a 54 hole event. A full field of 90 players started (13 women and 77 men) in what was to prove a very evenly contested tournament in both the men’s and women’s divisions. Cameron Jones (North Shore) scored an excellent 68, one shot ahead of Jordan Bakermans (Canterbury) 69 and Sam Vincent (Lochiel) and Nick Coxan (Narrows) on 70.10 players followed on 71 and another 4 on par 72. Round 3 on Sunday morning provided fine and warm weather set the scene for good golf. Like Toomey obliged with an excellent 67 for a 2 round total of 140, even with Hayden Beard (Mt Maunganui -69) and Jordan Bakermans (Canterbury -71). Sam Vincent one shot behind with 3 players on 142, 5 on 143 and 2 on 144. Setting up an afternoon of interesting golf. The lead changed often making it difficult for spectators and players to know who was going to take out the title. Lost balls, wayward drives and putts proved to be the difference. After the first 6 holes of the afternoon Luke Toomey and Hayden Beard were 5 under and the following field ranging from 4 to 1 under and still there with a chance. After 12 holes Hayden Beard was 6 under and looking good with his rivals one or 2 shots back. The last holes saw movement with Beard holding his lead and finished at 5 under (missed a makeable putt on the 18th). Nick Coxan (Narrows) was there and playing with Vincent had a wary eye on the gropu in fromnt and be-

hind. His final round of 70 could have been expected to be there at the finish. Jordan Bakermans (Canterbury), playing in the final group, had his chances but faltered slightly over the last 6 holes to finish with a 73, 4 under. Luke Toomey who had teed off in Group 8 had little to go on being so far ahead of the front players, saw the finishing post and had his chances with even par 72 – not quite enough to tie or take the lead. Smith playing in the 3rd group, in amongst the likely winners, made his move over the last 6 holes and playing the 18th birdied to finish equal with Beard on 211 – 5 under. Sam Vincent, playing in the group behind Smith, also finished on 211 giving a 3 way tie and requiring a sudden death play-off, the last one involved Danny Lee in. The Play-Off hole, the par 4 18th, saw Beard struggle after a wayward drive and a bogey, Vincent miss what would have been a very good putt and scoring a par. Bailey Smith sank a good putt from ab0ve the hole for a birdie and win the Men’s Division. In the women’s division, a 78 saw the early lead with Brittney Dryland (Titirangi) followed by Shanteal Ligaliga (Aviation) – 75 and Alanna Campbell (Omanu) and Onyou KIM (Gulf Harbour) both on 76. 73 scored by Onyou KIM (Gulf Harbour) and Brooke Hamilton (Maungakeikei) change the lead with Onyou Kim on 149 after 36 holes and Brooke Hamilton on 151. Shanteal Ligaliga sat 3rd on 154 and 3 on 155. The final round saw Onyou Kim score a very good 70 to set a total of 219 a clear winner. A good 73 by Alanna Campbell saw a share of 2nd place with Brooke Hamilton whose 78 resulted in a total of 229, some 10 shots behind the consistent Onyou KIM.
