Kiwis far from disgraced in NZ Open S o a New Zealander didn’t win the New Zealand Open. Yes, it would have been nice to have seen a Kiwi at the head of the field after four days at Millbrook and The Hills. And yes it would have been nice to have seen an end to that period that now stretches to 11 years since a New Zealander last won our most important golf tournament. But does that really mean golf in New Zealand at the top level is in the doldrums as some would have us think? Let’s say the purse for next year’s New Zealand Open is $US10 million and not $900,000 as it was this year. And because of that let’s say Tiger and Rory turn up. And let’s say Tiger or Rory wins. Does that mean New Zealand golf is in the doldrums because a New Zealander did not win? Of course not. The last Kiwi to win the New Zealand Open was Mahal Pearce at Auckland in 2003. That fact alone does make sad reading. No question. But it doesn’t necessarily say that the

strength of New Zealand men’s’ golf at the top end is lacking. For starters two of our best players Tim Wilkinson and Danny Lee didn’t play in the New Zealand Open. They have bigger fish to fry on the PGA Tour. Last month Lee finished second in the Puerto Rico Open in the Caribbean. He earned $US378,000. That’s $NZ441,000. First prize in the New Zealand Open was $150,000. Wilkinson, in February, was seventh in the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He picked up $US205,000 or $NZ240,000. There is just no comparison between the money on offer on the PGA Tour and the New Zealand Open. It would be nice if Wilkinson or Lee turned up for the New Zealand Open just like Michael Campbell used to. But nice doesn’t retain you the right to play on the world’s richest golf circuit. Wilkinson and Lee have to play the PGA Tour and they have to perform – otherwise they will not be on that tour the following year. I am sure both would love to have the lux-

ury of taking a few weeks off from the PGA Tour to return home for our national open. But that’s a luxury they don’t have. And while a New Zealander didn’t win the New Zealand Open they were hardly disgraced. Four of the top six players were New Zealanders and that in itself is very good. Mark Brown, from Wellington, finished second and if he had got his putter going on the last day could well have put pressure on the winner. But some days the putts just don’t drop. Any golfer will attest to that. Brown picked up more than $80,000 while David Klein from Te Anau in Fiordland finished third to earn about $55,000. Richard Lee from Auckland shared fourth place for earnings of more than $35,000 and another Aucklander, Ryan Fox, was sixth to take home a little less than $30,000. That’s a good week’s work by Brown, Klein, Lee and Fox. We’ll just have to wait until next year for redemption – unless, of course, Tiger or Rory turn up.

Hamilton keeping it in the family at South Island Champs

B

rooke Hamilton followed in her sister Jesse’s footsteps when she won the South Island Strokeplay Championship in Dunedin. The Auckland 16-year-old from St Cuthbert’s College enjoyed an emphatic 12-shot victory over Bay of Plenty representative Grace Senior to land her first national title. Older sister Jesse Hamilton had won the same tournament in 2011. Brooke Hamilton, who plays at the Maungakiekie club, had rounds of 74, 69, 73 and 75 for a three-over par total in testing conditions at St Clair. Asked what it meant to win she replied: ``It was my first national tournament win and it meant a lot because I have been working really hard, especially during the summer holidays. ``I was actually going to pull out of this tournament because I had so much school work to catch up on from the previous tournament, but luckily I convinced my mum that I should play.’’ Hamilton said good course management was the key to her runaway win. ``Everything was falling into place for me. My game definitely suited the course and even when the conditions were shocking I still kept my game up. ``But if I had to choose one part it would

have to be my course management. I wasn’t expecting to win. All I wanted was to play good. Winning was just a bonus.’’ A birdie out of nowhere was one shot she remembered well. ``My best shot, that kind of completed my whole game for the tournament, was on the 16th hole (par three) which was the third to last hole of the tournament. I blocked my first shot right and I had about 25 metres to the flag. I knew it was going to land right next to the hole but instead it just went straight in.’’ Hamilton hopes the win will set a standard she can maintain. ``Hopefully my success from this tournament will continue onto future tournaments. My goal for the rest of the 2014 season is to stay in the present, play my own game and have fun.’’ South Island Women’s Strokeplay Championship results (St Clair Golf Club, par 72):-

Papadatos handles pressure like an old pro H

e had only been a professional golfer for little more than a year and had not won on the Australasian Tour previously – but that mattered for little when it came to the New Zealand Open for Dimitrios Papadatos. Despite being the leader going into the final round many would have dismissed the little known 22-year-old from New South Wales to fade when the pressure went on. But it was quite the contrary. Papadatos scored a 6-under par 66 in his final round at The Hills course in Arrowtown to win the $900,000 tournament by four strokes from Mark Brown of New Zealand. It was Papadatos’ first win since turning professional at the end of 2012. His previous best finish on the Australasian Tour had been third in the Perth International last October. Papadatos, who began the final round with a one shot lead over Kiwi hopefuls Brown and Richard Lee (71), was unflappable in his final round. The former Australian representative played the front nine in one-under par 35 before he lit the back nine up with five birdies to put the title beyond reach of others. Meanwhile Brown, who couldn’t convert many chances for birdie, finished alone in second with fellow New Zealander David Klein (67) earning the best result of his young professional career when he finished third. Auckland pro Lee never got going on the final day and finished tied fourth alongside Australian Ashley Hall (70) while Ryan Fox (70) made a strong challenge for the title before making costly bogeys on 14 and 18. But the tournament was all about a coming-of-age performance from Papadatos who admitted etching his name into the Brodie Breeze Trophy was taking time to sink in. He said the final few holes were all a bit of a blur as he tried to close out the victory. ``I just wanted to concentrate and not get too overwhelmed with what was happening,” said Papadatos about the final hole.

ViSiT

When he hit the green in two and comfortably made the two-putt for par he could finally relax. He was swamped by a swagger of young Aussie pros who showered him with champagne. ``It’s awesome, great bunch of guys and they’re very supportive. We all try and beat each other but at the end of the week, there’s no hard feelings.” Papadatos wasn’t too sure how he would handle the pressure on the last day. ``I kept believing in myself and telling myself I could do it, the whole way round. But there’s always that thing, deep down wondering if you really can.” Papadatos said it was ``unreal” to follow in the footsteps of some great Aussie players – the likes of Peter Thomson, Kel Nagle, Peter O’Malley and Craig Parry – who had won the New Zealand Open. He also followed the lead of his good friend Jake Higginbottom who won the same tournament as an amateur at Clearwater in Christchurch in 2012. ``I didn’t really think at the start of the week I would have had my name on the trophy behind him (Higginbottom), but as the week started to progress, I thought there was a good chance so I’m pretty happy.” Papadatos believed the win, where he earned 16 world rankings points and three starts on the Japan Tour, would be massive for his immediate career. ``Obviously some great players have won this event, it’s a massive honour. I wouldn’t have told you at the start of the week I was capable of this. I’m really happy.” Not feeling as upbeat was Mark Brown from Wellington. He said there was little comfort in finishing second and the leading Kiwi for the second New Zealand Open in succession. ``It was just frustrating that I didn’t have the A-game today like I played a couple of the other days,” Brown, 39, said. ``The chances I did give myself I didn’t convert and it was only really towards the

end that I made a couple of birdies so Dimi played great. He holed the putts when he needed to. ``It’s all about winning and particularly this tournament, so I take no solace in finishing second at all. It wasn’t what I wanted so it’s just really disappointing.” Brown thought he had a good chance of making a late play for the title at the par three 16th when he hit his tee shot to five feet but Papadatos made a birdie from 25 feet and the Kiwi missed his chance. He was not surprised to see such a young inexperienced player handle the pressure of leading throughout the final round with so much composure. It was a sign of the times. ``The young guys now have got no fear. They all putt great, their short games are great so when they do make a mistake off tee to green they’ll save it and not only that, they’ll hole putts.”

Canterbury amateur Jordan Bakermans finished as the leading amateur to claim the Bledisloe Cup when Southland No 1 Vaughan McCall was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard. ``It is a huge honour to win this trophy,” said Bakermans, 20, from the Christchurch Golf Club. ``It was my goal at the start of the week and while I would have loved to make the cut this is a pretty cool honour to take home from this tournament.” Meanwhile in the New Zealand Pro-Am Championship it was Australian Brody Ninyette and amateur Sam Hamilton who claimed the title in the best-ball format despite Ninyette shooting a 13-over 85 in the final round. They won the first NZ Pro-Am to be staged at the NZ Open by two shots from Nick Gillespie and John Bowring on a 39-under par total.

The Hills and Millbrook again for NZ Open 2015

T

he use of two courses for the New Zealand Open will be continued next year, organisers have announced. The first two rounds of last month’s open in Queenstown were held at the Millbrook Resort and The Hills, with the final two rounds at The Hills. The same format will be used next year. One minor change will be the date. It will be held two weeks earlier to align itself with a number of events that lead into the Japan tour. The dates for next year will be March 12-15. Tournament director Michael Glading said: ``It makes a lot of sense to push the event back a little so players can have a lead in to major tournaments in Asia.’’ Glading hailed last month’s open as ``a huge success” confirming an increased crowd of 20,000 having attended over the four days – about 5000 more than the NZPGA tournament of the previous year. ``We’re really pleased with the official numbers,” Glading said. ``If it wasn’t for brutal weather on Friday with snow on the mountains and uncharacteristically cold days, things could have been even better.” This year a pro-am competition was held in conjunction with the main event which was the first time a national golf open had been held in this format. Glading said the format was ``very well received” by players, amateurs, celebrities, volunteers and attendees. ``The feedback from players and celebs has been overwhelming. They love coming to Queenstown and many of the professionals have said it’s their favourite event of the year.” As well as visitors enjoying the golf, an estimated 2000-strong crowd enjoyed the Open Sounds concert presented by Amisfield on the Saturday night, featuring up and coming young local singer Holly Arrowsmith and Anika Moa. ``The entertainment factor at the New Zealand Open – including the 19th and 15th party holes - is hugely important and one we plan to build on year by year,” Glading said. “We’re already looking forward to the 95th New Zealand Open.”

Chisnall leads all the way in SI Strokeplay R

yan Chisnall showed why he had been touted as one of New Zealand’s most promising young amateurs when winning the South Island Strokeplay Championships in Dunedin. Chisnall, 19, had a two-shot lead over Jordan Bakermans after the first two rounds following a brilliant seven-under 65 and a four-under 68 at the St Clair Golf Club. Chisnall and Bakermans continued to battle it out over the final two days with Chisnall, an assistant greenkeeper at Greenacres Golf Club in Nelson, prevailing by one stroke. It was Chisnall’s best win so far. ``Winning the South Island Stroke Play meant a lot to me,’’ Chisnall said. ``It’s the biggest win to date for me, so that made it that little bit sweeter. After I finished the last hole it gave me great sense of relief and satisfaction to chalk one up on the board. This was my first national title. Hopefully this gives me the con-

fidence I need to win something bigger and better.’’ Chisnall admitted to nerves as Bakermans closed the gap. ``Jordan did play well in the last round. The momentum was swinging into his favour as I was leaking a few shots coming home. Luckily I was far enough ahead to scrap through. I was feeling nervous down the last hole. But I hit a good drive, pitched it on the green and two putted which was a good finishing hole.’’ Chisnall said he pleased at the way he hit the ball for the four days. ``My ball striking for the weekend was solid. I hit a few greens which took the pressure off my short game a little. I holed my fair share of putts which was promising. That helped me shoot a few good numbers. But there is still plenty to improve on.’’ Chisnall said everything just clicked in his first two rounds. ``In my round of 65, I just played solid from tee to green. I didn’t hit many fairways but

NEWS managed to stay out of trouble. I was able to take advantage of my opportunities and finished strong which was satisfying. ``My round of 68, I started off with a roar. I birdied the first three holes which was good but then I struggled a bit throughout my round. I managed to finish well and to take the lead into Sunday was a cool feeling.’’ Chisnall hoped the win would be a good confidence booster for the future. ``It will help my confidence hugely. And the more experience you have under pressure makes you all the better for it next time you’re in that position. It also taught me how to win, and what it takes. That it doesn’t really need to be perfect, you just need to be mentally good and take your opportunities that are handed to you.’’ Chisnall has no other specific goals other than keep improving and play in better fields. ``My goals for 2014 are to just keep improving. I’m happy with how my game is developing. Over the May through to September period, which is downtime for me, I’ll be looking at trying to get my body into a much better shape. ``I have got a lot of work to do there so hopefully I can get motivated to do that as it’ll help me hugely. But my goal golf-wise for the year is to make the 2014 Asian Amateur team. I want to gain experience from playing in stronger fields. I’m looking forward to the year ahead.’’

Putting a focus on foursomes W

ith attention increasingly turning to new and faster ways of playing the game - nine-hole golf, powerplay and cheeky nine - is it time to also consider another option which goes right back to the origins of golf: foursomes play. Having just returned from playing for the 10th or 11th time in the three-day Wanaka Charity Tournament, which is based on teams of four playing various forms of foursomes, with a two-ball ambrose thrown in as well, I’ve been reflecting on the popularity of this event which is invariably sold out months in advance. I guess that’s due to the unique format which puts the focus on playing for the team rather than yourself, whilst taking part in a highly competitive but fun tournament. So why foursomes? Firstly, it is a traditional form of the game covered in the rules of golf, with a long history going back to the big money games of the mid-19th century between the Park brothers and old Tom Morris and his son Young Tom. In New Zealand, foursomes play was a routine part of the former week-long festival of golf around the New Zealand Open and PGA Championship. The NZ PGA Foursomes Championship trophy features many famous names, none more so than our own legend Andy Shaw, who won the Kirk Cup no less than nine times, each with a different partner. However, the event has been in recess in recent years, and our attempt to bring it back at Titirangi last November was frustrated by a typical Auckland deluge which

washed out play before the round could be completed. Secondly, foursomes can be a very quick game once players realise they can walk ahead to where the next shot is likely to be played (admittedly not always predictable), and of course putting is much faster with only half the number of balls in play. That makes it an ideal game for winter, when frost, ground conditions and shorter daylight hours can make individual play problematical. On that theme, the rules allow partners to share clubs (providing the total carried between them is not more than 14), so two players could carry seven clubs each thus reducing physical stress and damage to the course. Sounds like an ideal solution for Auckland winters in particular. Clubs could also put new life into a quiet time of the year by running a winter foursomes series, and perhaps a winter top dog foursomes as well. You can get more players on the course playing foursomes, because there is nothing to stop playing in sixes, or even eights as they do in Wanaka on the last day, when a four-ball best-ball foursome is played in around four hours. Foursomes also brings new strategies into play. Firstly, there’s not much point in apologising for putting your partner into the trees or missing a short putt, because

he or she will do the same to you sooner or later. It doesn’t take long though to work out that your objective is to leave your partner with the easiest shot possible, rather than going for broke as we all tend to do as individuals. If you play a lot of foursomes, you will soon realise that the principle is equally applicable to your normal game and you will find that leads to better scores. Finally, traditionalists who turn their noses up at ``different” forms of golf can hardly object to foursomes, so it has the potential to keep nearly everyone in the club happy. All in all, a few good reasons to bring foursomes back as a regular feature in your club competition schedule.

Clubs could also put new life into a quiet time of the year by running a winter foursomes series, and perhaps a winter top dog foursomes as well.

Andrew Whiley

Resident Pro at Chisholm Park, Dunedin

Queenstown a great venue for NZ Open T

he New Zealand Open was an outstanding success in my book. The atmosphere of the event at The Hills and Millbrook was magical and the vibe from the players, both amateur and professional, was mostly very positive. Best of all, most of the gallery loved the format of professionals playing alongside amateurs – seeing great shots from the pros and not so great shots from some of the amateurs. Watching the car park fill up on the Saturday at The Hills, it was impressive to see the cars still coming through the gate at three o’clock in the afternoon. Unfortunately, the weather forecast for the Sunday didn’t help ensure a large crowd for the finish. Talking to my local golfers in Dunedin, most are already planning to attend the event again next year. But is it all about the golf? No, not really. It is also about the region. It is about enjoying Queenstown, the views, the attractions in the area, the restaurants and wineries and perhaps also playing some of the local golf courses. I know both Arrowtown and Queenstown Golf Clubs had their busiest weeks of the year for green fee players, so this is great for the local economy. These are

golf courses worth playing on any visit to Queenstown. What makes the NZ Open so special now is the foresight that major sponsor Sir Michael Hill and tournament chair John Hart brought to the event. Not only do you have a wonderful location with the fabulous sculptures that grace The Hills golf course but you also have the special touches on “main street” with the

tent village and 19th hole along with the Saturday evening concert for the volunteers which this year featured singer Anika Moa. What amazes me is how the volunteers have embraced the event. Golfers, and often their spouses, from around the country descend on the Queenstown region to be a part of this event. Sue McFarlane does a great job, with her helpers,

managing volunteers over the two golf courses. Co-ordinating the hundreds of people needed is not easy but everyone does it with so much fun that no wonder everyone wants to participate. I was also amazed by how many non-golfers I met in the volunteer ranks that attend because it is just a fun event in which to participate. Some of my traditional golfing friends did not believe the NZ Open should have amateurs involved playing on the Sunday in such a prestigious event. In talking with many of the tour pros early in the week, even they were apprehensive. By Sunday they thought it was a great way to grow the event and made it exciting for all. Is this a winning formula? I think so. The “corporate folks” love it as a way to entertain key clients and this in turn adds to the tournament sponsorship. Talking to amateur golfers from the United States, China, Korea, Indonesia, South Africa, Britain and Australia, they all hoped to attend again and some are bringing friends with them next year. This endorsement of the quality of the event bodes well for its future development and also the business relations that New Zealand can benefit from on a global scale – especially in Asia.

You must get to Hawaii before you’re 5-0 collection of ‘big’ courses in its armoury, and none sticks out more than the South Course at Mauna Lani. Winding its way through prehistoric volcanic lava, it’s hard to believe that such a piece of beauty was created where life could not. Be sure to bring your camera, the 15th hole is not one of the most photographed without reason. It is rugged, with pock-marks stretching into the ocean; you’ll need to go large to cross the water and land it dry. If you do you’ll be handsomely rewarded, your ball set on lush Bermuda and your heart lost to the islands of Hawaii. Brooky and her fiancé Ian Godleman will head a new coaching operation at Manor Park along with Bruce Farmer from Silverstream Golf Park. Brooky was a successful professional player for nearly 20 years. She won nine professional tournaments including two French Opens. Her playing days are now over; she has returned to live in Wellington and they were due to be married this month. Godleman, from England, has been a golf coach for nearly 30 years and includes former world No 1-ranked Seve Ballesteros among his students. He has also been associated with Ryder Cup players Paul Way and Philip Price. els,” Godleman said. Brooky said playing amongst many of the world’s best and being at the receiving end of topend coaching gives her a great

insight to what a player needs to learn. ``Twenty years of experiencing top coaches and players has given me the ability not just to teach

but actually to coach golf. It’s not about pupils remembering, it’s about golfers understanding the game more,” Brooky said. Brooky is an honorary member

at Manor Park. She represented the club when winning two New Zealand amateur titles in the 1990s. Bruce Farmer, the resident coach at Silverstream Golf Park, will provide back-up to Brooky and Godleman along with operating the Manor Park golf shop. Silverstream Golf Park is taking over the running of the golf shop following the retirement of long-time member and well known local professional Murray McDonald on March 31 and is planning to build a relationship between the golf club and its driving range at Silverstream. Manor Park general manager Steve Wallace said “the Club is delighted to have attracted such high profile people in golf from both overseas and locally in a “hybrid” type operation to compliment the coaching and practice facilities here which are among the best in the country. We are sure that the local golfing public in the greater Wellington area as well as members will hugely benefit from what we have been able to establish and offer.”

Nike Golf wants to know: what’s your RZN? New Nike RZN Recommender tool helps golfers choose the best RZN golf ball for their game

M

ore distance, softer feel, less spin, more spin – there’s no onesize-fits-all when it comes to golf balls. That’s the idea behind the new Nike RZN Recommender, a digital tool that helps golfers find the RZN golf ball – Nike RZN Black, Nike RZN Platinum, Nike RZN Red or Nike RZN White – that best fits their specific needs. The Nike Golf ball team tapped into feedback from in-person ball fittings to craft a range of simple questions for users to answer: What’s your average score? What is your club head speed? Stay within the fairway or slice and hook? What is your ball flight? What do you want out of your approach shots? Based on users’ responses, the tool doesn’t just tell golfers which Nike RZN ball is best for them – it tells them why. “Different golfers have different needs when it comes to the ball they should be playing,” says Mike Pai, Global Product Director, Golf Balls & Bags. “There’s a RZN for everybody – whether you’re a beginner or have been playing the sport your whole life, the RZN Recommender is a great tool that utilizes a strategic, streamlined ap-

proach to make sure you have the right ball in your bag, and help you understand why it will help your golf game.” Every ball in Nike’s 2014 RZN line features Nike’s proprietary Speedlock RZN core technology, created with an interlocking core design that helps promote better energy transfer between the layers at impact for faster ball speed, longer distance and more stability into the wind. A new spin-optimized coating on the outer surface of the ball helps grip the grooves for better control on wedge and iron shots. All four models feature a softer cover and softer compression in the core to help provide improved sound and feel, especially on off-center shots.

The 2014 Nike RZN line: RZN Platinum: Tour Performance control and moderate spin RZN Black: Tour Performance distance and lower spin RZN Red: Distance Performance, longer carry RZN White: Distance Performance and softer feel for a wide range of swing speeds For more information on Nike Golf, visit www.nikegolf.com

EVENT

Preparations for Nelson Festival of Golf in full swing

F

ollowing the outstanding success of the inaugural Nelson Festival of Golf last year, planning is well underway for the 2014 tournament. In 2013 this challenging tournament attracted players from 54 golf clubs around New Zealand including from Opotiki in the north to Port Chalmers in the south. More than twothirds of players came from outside the Nelson region. The tournament is staged at Nelson Golf Links, Greenacres and Motueka Golf Courses with two days to be played on the Nelson Golf Links which has also been chosen to host the 2014 New Zealand Amateur Championships in April this year and for the 2015 Seniors Championships. The courses are all very different. Nelson is a true links course, Motueka is a mature parkland course, with Greenacres offering a mix of waterfront and parkland holes. Tournament dates for 2014 Nelson Festival of Golf are Monday 20 – Friday 24 October with a rest day on the Wednesday to allow competitors to put their feet up or get out and about and visit the many attractions the region has to offer. The tournament overlaps again with the Nelson Arts Festival which is a great bonus for non playing partners making the trip to Nelson. The organising committee has decided to keep the number of entries to 128, the same as last year, because this created both a competitive yet friendly environment for all the participants. By the end of the week players had golfed with and made friends with other golfers from all over New Zealand. Derek Drysdale the Tournament Director said, “At the final prize giving on the Friday it was really pleasing to hear many of the competitors refer to this event as ‘the friendly tournament.” “We are delighted that over 36 players who played in the tournament last year have already registered to enter the tournament again this year,” Derek said. “So if you are keen to enjoy a week of golf in October in the stunning Nelson region, now is the time to register to avoid disappointment.” Sponsorship has been secured from Waimea Family Estate Wines and Taylor Made Golf and as always the event organisers ask that all competitors support our sponsors whenever possible. Without the support of such sponsors, they would not be able to offer the wonderful prizes. This

lenging competition offered on the variety of different courses along with the opportunity to have fun, meet new friends and most of all enjoy their week with them. The golf days will be run on a 9.00am shotgun start basis, so that all players will be back in the clubhouse around the same time providing a fantastic atmosphere for each day’s prize giving.

Feedback received from last year’s competitors: “Great courses and each quite different.” Amberley “We can’t wait until next year and we can come back again.” - Turua “This was our first visit to Nelson and we thoroughly enjoyed our golf and our stay. I can pay no higher compliment than to say that I would highly recommend this tournament to my friends.” - Auckland

Sponsorship: Waimea Family Estate Wines:

W year the hole-in-one prizes are still being discussed, but we will be offering major prizes for all competitors to have a go at that “Ace in the Hole”. We will also be running our lucky draw prizes, where each day, 4 lucky competitors will win a $50 voucher from our chosen restaurant partners, to go and enjoy some fabulous food during their stay in the region. At the time of printing we are delighted to confirm that the following Nelson restaurant’s have all intimated their involvement in our tournament prize scheme: Lonestar Restaurant, The Vic Brew Bar and Speight’s Ale House The event itself will be for individual and team stableford scores contested at Nelson on the Monday and Friday, Motueka on the Tuesday and Greenacres on the Thursday.

There will be daily prizes for individual and team scores and weekly overall prizes for individuals. Entry fees include four rounds of golf, individual and team competitions, golf gift and a two-course dinner to be held during the final prize giving at the Nelson Golf Club on the Friday evening, where we are planning a party atmosphere to finish the week off in style! We are also planning a novelty putting competition which all players will be eligible to enter, on a daily basis, with a putt-off on the Friday for the daily winners. This will be a lot of fun but also great prizes are up for grabs. Organisers want to build on the great success of last year’s tournament. They invite you to register now and enjoy the chal-

rigit Holford needed 19 holes to win her semi-final of the New Zealand Women’s Senior Matchplay Championship but it was a different story in the final. The Auckland golfer from The Grange club had a see-sawing game with Robyn Boniface from Southland in her semi-final which saw them equal after 18 holes at the Springfield Golf Club in Rotorua. Boniface, from Queen’s Park, had been a three-time winner of the main trophy of the Veteran Challenge Cup but she three-putted on the first extra hole to allow Holford into the final. Holford’s opponent in the final was Judy Randell from the Manor Park club in Wellington. Randell had looked in good form after winning her semi-final 4 and 3 over Gillian Lees from Mt Maunganui in Tauranga. The final was a close tussle in the early stages with Holford having a 1 up lead after nine holes but birdies on the 10th and 11th holes saw her drew clear to eventually win 5 and 4.

NZ Golf launches new LOVE Golf campaign

I

t began with the now world-famous #KogoesPro video with Lydia Ko and All Black Israel Dagg and now New Zealand Golf launches the LOVE Golf campaign. It is the first time that New Zealand Golf has undertaken a nationwide promotion of golf with the aim of the campaign to drive people towards golf club membership and to also promote participation and change perceptions of the national game. Ko and Dagg, who featured in the video, which attracted more than 110,000 views on YouTube and global media interest, are the first of many LOVE Golf ambassadors of people from all walks of life. Jan Rowsell, the Marketing Manager of New Zealand Golf, told Golfer Pacific she hoped that the campaign would be a landmark promotion for golf in New Zealand “We have been working really hard over the last 12 months with the LOVE Golf campaign and we are really excited to launch this initiative which has the potential to change the way people perceive golf,” she said. Rowsell believed the key to the LOVE Golf campaign will be its longevity. “To have an impact of the casual player in New Zealand the LOVE Golf campaign will be on going and have a long term focus of building golf club membership and making the game we all love sustainable for the future.” Rowsell, who has recently taken up golf membership herself after a hockey career that included representing NZ, said there have been challenges in running a nationwide campaign that works

LOVE Golf ambassadors Lydia Ko and All Black Israel Dagg. Photo: Love Golf Campaign

for all clubs. “We are fortunate to have many different and unique courses in New Zealand however this creates its challenges when trying to do something nationally that can work for everyone. “Flexibility within the campaign was therefore the key to its success and getting support from the clubs. Feedback so far has been very positive that we have achieved this.” The LOVE Golf website has been created and is designed to be light-hearted, fun and welcoming and to show people just how affordable and accessible being a member of a golf club is. “It highlights how affordable golf can be if you break membership down to a weekly fee, as gym membership does,” said Rowsell. “The website will also show the public how many different types of membership

offerings are available at each club, giving the likes of those with busy schedules and young children the chance to look at memberships that are more tailored to their lifestyle.” The LOVE Golf website will make getting into golf a simple process with a search tool for people to search for memberships and offers. Every club that signs up for the LOVE Golf campaign will offer golfers an introductory offer of three rounds of golf and a lesson with the club professional (if applicable). Golf clubs will receive access to a LOVE Golf tool kit where they will be able to change out stock imagery for their own use providing clubs with professional marketing collateral which is tailored to their own needs and different offerings. The LOVE Golf brand, which will be

used on merchandise, is already in demand and this merchandise will be available soon. Ko and Dagg proved to be the ideal ambassadors for LOVE Golf with their natural camaraderie and banter which many casual golfers can relate to. “We were fortunate to get such a great response to the video we made with Lydia and Israel as our LOVE Golf ambassadors. The chemistry between the two is great and they tell the story of how much fun golf can be and how it can be played by all abilities. “We’re looking forward to adding more LOVE Golf ambassadors from all walks of life as the campaign rolls out and will be looking to use social media as the primary driver to again tell all the wonderful stories about the love of golf.” To view your Golf membership requirements go to www.lovegolf.co.nz

land) and Christopher Shepherd (12-14 year boys – Whangarei). The total number of junior golfers involved in the day was 53 and they were well supported by around 80 plus parents, relatives and friends as they tried to win their District event or gave golf a go for the first time. Golf Northland Development Manager Michael Macdonald was excited about the talent on display. “It is always fun to see a new generation of talented golfers emerging and the support of family and friends on the day is just amazing. “Both eleven and under titles were decided by playoff, Kenny and Hamish both handled themselves admirably under the pressure with large galleries watching on, each prevailed on the second hole of sudden death.” Macdonald also noted the contribution of a number of Northlands older juniors on the day. “We are lucky to have a number of young guys who are willing to give back to the game that has given them a lot. “Last year’s National Final winner Julian Fowler (Northland) was on site all day and spoke at prize giving about his experience of representing New Zealand at the Junior World Champs in 2013 and New Zealand Amateur Champion Kadin Neho was on hand to present the prizes “It is great for the kids to meet these guys and see just what can be achieved from within Northland with a bit of hard work and determination” The day was a fun day out for all the family with MoreFM providing local entertainment for the junior golfers involved. New Zealand Golf began its hunt for this year’s Junior Tiger over the weekend at clubs all around the country. The young golfers are playing for the chance to represent their district at the National Final and potentially travel to the United States to represent NZ in the World Junior Golf Championship. Junior Tiger is a New Zealand Golf initiative designed to promote the game to young people as an affordable and accessible sport. The Junior Tiger series is as much about taking part as it is winning. Golfers of all abilities are encouraged to give golf a go on the day. “It is great to see that many players starting out playing golf who played the first Junior Tiger event are back again playing Junior Tiger this year, “ said Liz McKinnon the New Zealand Golf High Performance

GOLF TRAILS on the courses of other clubs, both in New Zealand and overseas. The Quay Tower Golfing Club was born in a fascinating way. Workers in a multi storey downtown Auckland building would travel up and down in the lifts without conversation. The building was called Quay Tower and housed many different firms on its multiple floors. One day in the lift someone started a conversation about golf. This seemed to be a touchstone. Others chimed in. The next thing was that a golf club was formed, one without its own course or club house. That was in 1980. The club now has 500 members. It has played on courses around the world, including the likes of St Andrews and Gleneagles. Executives from overseas visiting Quay Tower joined the club. Each year, regardless of overseas trips, the club holds a tournament in New Zealand and this year’s was at the Bay Of Islands Golf Club in Kerikeri. 60 players teed off. Tournament organiser George Wallace said that the club’s annual tournament had been to many golf courses over the years, but lately they had settled on Rotorua. But in recent years they had also played a tournament at Kerikeri and he has detected a very strong feeling among players that Kerikeri should be the future base for the tournament. Mr Wallace said that the Bay Of Islands Club course was in his opinion one of the top courses in the world and is underestimated in parts of the golfing community. “It would cost you a hundred pounds for a round on a course like this in the UK,” he declared. Mr Wallace is a former golf instructor, having worked in that job in his native Scotland. He has recently moved from Auckland to Kerikeri, which he says is no barrier to his involvement with the Quay Tower Golf Club. He says members are now spread all over New Zealand and the globe, but the club has no problem organising its events. He doubts that anyone currently working in the Quay Tower building is a member. “I guess it’s a historic thing, “ he quips. Sunday it hosted the Quay Tower event. Saturday, it hosted. Warkworth golfer a Two Shot Wonder Young amateur golfer Michael Leggoe of Warkworth Golf Club has accomplished a very rare feat recently, by ‘holing out’ for two shots on a Par 5. An albatross, or double eagle as it is referred to on the US tour, is rare enough but what makes this special is that this is Michael’s second albatross 2. Michael managed the same feat in 2008 while playing tournament golf at the Hokitika Golf Club. Leggoe made his second albatross two at the Warkworth Golf Club’s 424m number eight hole ‘The Devil’ during the first round of the 54 Hole men’s open. Michael proved that his most recent albatross wasn’t just luck when he made eagle 3 on the same hole during his afternoon round. “I just tapped that one in, It must have just missed!” said Michael. same day was given less attention, but generated some debate later in the club house on what was the better achievement. When asked to comment Leggoe was quick to say “ I played two great shots for mine.” A 2004 article in Golf World magazine quoted Dean Knuth as putting the odds at 1-million-to-1 for an albatross 2 and hole in one odds in the neighborhood of 13,000to-1 for the average golfer. Odds are there will be plenty to talk about at the Warkworth Golf Club for the foreseeable future especially if anyone mentions the words ‘albatross’ and ‘one’ in the same sentence.

GOLF TRAILS WOMENS MASTERS TEAM The team to represent North Harbour at the 2014 National women’s masters at Springfield Golf Club in Rotorua has been selected. In playing order the team is Vaha Fapiano (North Shore), Annette Muir (Waitemata), Lynda Tate (Peninsula) and Elaine Jordan (Whangaparaoa). Congratulations to the players selected and good luck!

JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT SQUADS SELECTED 35 players in total have been selected for the 2014 North Harbour Junior Development Squads. There are two Junior Girl squads and three junior boys’ squads. The professional coaches involved in 2014 are Gary Parkinson, Stuart Reese and Jenna Hunter. There is a range in ability across this group with the lowest handicap being 2 and the highest 36. The North Harbour Golf association look forward to helping these juniors improve their golf through the year.

2014 MONDIALE OMAHA BEACH PRO AM Taranaki professional Dominic Barson won a three-way play-off to claim victory in The Mondiale Omaha Beach Pro-Am golf tournament on the weekend of 22-23 February. Barson shot a 3-under 68 in very humid conditions on Saturday to be tied for fourth with Grant Moorhead, 4 shots behind first round leader Ben Campbell.

Testing conditions on Sunday afternoon took their toll on the leading players, but Barson and Moorhead played steady golf to finish 3-under for the tournament, alongside Jordan Dasler. Although he missed the green on both playoff holes, Barson held his nerve to out-putt his opponents and claim the $4,500 winner’s purse. Barson has been a regular at the Omaha Pro Am since its inception 15 years ago, and was delighted to finally get his name on the trophy. “I’ve been coming here for about 15 years, so it’s great to finally win the thing” he said. The $25,000 Omaha Beach event is well established as one of the key fixtures on the New Zealand golf calendar. The 2014 tournament attracted a field of 53 professionals and 135 amateurs. A big innovation this year was a $65,000 Peugeot that was up for grabs for a hole in one on the 17th. A stiff south-west wind on Sunday made this a difficult proposition, and the car was not claimed, although one unlucky amateur saw his ball bounce off the pin on Saturday. Omaha Beach Golf Club resident professional Neil van Vliet was delighted with this year’s event, which saw amateur teams from throughout Auckland and beyond turning out for the chance to test their skills alongside a number of the country’s leading golfers on the beautifully presented Omaha course. The winning amateur team of Will Rutherford, Mark Flood and Craig Priscott all from Redwood Park), will enjoy a round at the iconic Kauri Cliffs course as part of their prize. The Omaha

Beach Golf Club express their thanks to all the Sponsors, Professional and Amateur players, and a huge thank you to all the volunteers for their support and tireless work during the event. 

TITIRANGI STROKEPLAY The 2014 Titirangi Golf club Strokeplay Championships were played late last month and was keenly contested with 94

entries across 4 divisions. The 72 hole Open Strokeplay featured the clubs best players and produced the best golf, but the Intermediate Junior and C Grade divisions produced more exciting golf due to multiple lead changes throughout one round. Two time open Strokeplay Champion Josh Leitch was looking at a three peat and took control after rounds 1 & 2 with scores of 73 & 74. Josh held a 2 shot lead over Johnny Tynan, 4 shot lead over first round leader Michael Bowden and 5 shot lead over Brett Steven. After a third round even par 70 Josh had extended his lead to 9 shots over second placed Johnny Tynan, who had a three shot lead over Michael Bowden and 4 over Brett Steven. So with the title all but Josh’s it was who was going to secure second place. Brett Steven played great golf being even par through the front 9 holes to move into outright second and also started to close the gap with leader Josh Leitch, the final nine holes Josh was able to match Brett and won by a margin of 6 shots. Brydie Hodge (Levin) in the girls team. Former Bay of Plenty coach and Tauranga Golf Club professional Jay Carter will manage the boys team. The selection comes as no surprise to anyone who follows the amateur golf scene, particularly after a meritorious summer for Bay golfers. Smith and Campbell enjoyed success across the Tasman in January, claiming the South Australian Junior Championship and the Victoria Junior Masters respectively to begin the year. A week later Hillier celebrated his 17th birthday in style by winning the North Island Under 19 Championship at St.Andrews while Kingi was a clear winner of the Ladies National Maori Golf Matchplay title. Last year as a 15 year old Tyler King convincingly won the South Island Under 19 title and with a little more self belief there is every chance of further success for the Tauranga Boys College student. The Australian Boys’ Amateur Championship will be played at the Jack Nicklaus designed Heritage Golf and Country Club just outside of Melbourne from 9-11 April and the Girls Championship will be held on the same dates at Croydon Golf Club (Yer-

ing Meadows). On a sad note the Kaingaroa Forest Golf Club which during its heyday won the Championship Pennant with players like Jason Laing and Marcus Lloyd leading the way, has gone into recession. Last year the uninsured clubhouse was burnt to the ground by arsonists and a recent meeting resolved to cease all operations. Existing members are expected to join Murupara the closest course Kaingaroa. This Easter will be the 6th staging of the Bay of Plenty Seniors Championship played over 54 holes at the three Championship courses of Tauranga, Omanu and Mt.Maunganui. With all morning rounds players can relax and enjoy the Tauranga Jazz festival in the afternoons which all makes for a great weekend in the Bay!

RANGATIRA ICON SAVED The Golf world’s iconic famous cable car located at Rangatira Golf club has been saved. Golfer Pacific last year reported that he Cable car was red-strickered due to safety concerns.

However, all that is now behind the club due to significant safety upgrades that have recently been approved by regulatory bodies. Club spokesman Warren Guineven told Golfer Pacific NZ, that a significant fund raising programme, grant applications, and a black tie dinner, ensured that a good deal of the funds raised went along way to cover the cable car safety braking system and upgrade requirements. The electric cable car has been transporting golfers and their gear safely up a steep incline from the 18th green without incident for 41 years. Rangatira, with a membership of 105, are waiting for final invoices, but Guineven thought the upgrade to comply with the safety requirements would be close to $125,000. The upgrade while a significant commitment for the club ensures that the Green fee income on average of $50,000 to $60,000 per year has been protected, and ensure that New Zealand s and world golfer’s continue to enjoy a unique Golfing experience. 

er) a little longer than anticipated. But the wind also contributed, with some assistance from the dry fairways, to some very very long drives – 300m-plus was common with at least one of 400m-plus ! The afternoon singles saw a couple of one-sided matches but the majority went down to the last few holes. Carterton and Karori shared the honours, 7 ½ – 7 ½. Wainuiomata had to fight a resurgent Titahi for their portion of the available 15 points, but again a shared 7 ½ – 7 ½ result. The Shandon / Judgeford contest was a slightly different story with Judgeford bettering Shandon 12 – 3. After completion of this round (R6), Judgeford lead the Waikanae Cup with 53.5, followed by Carterton with 46.5 and Wainuiomata in third with 44.0 points.

WELLINGTON

KARORI GOLF CLUB MORPHED TO MANOR PARK GOLF SANCTUARY A recent visit by Golfer Pacific NZ to Manor Park Golf Sanctuary uncovered an interesting yarn. Club manager Steve Wallace told Golfer Pacific that the origins of Manor Park Golf Sanctuary (Haywards –Lower Hutt) can be traced back to Karori (Wellington). Manor Park celebrated their centenary last year had their first club location in Karori. Located at Campbell Street from 1913, incorporation followed in 1916. Then they relocated to the Burrowes & Richmond Avenues area at the southern end of Karori Road. In 1925, housing and urban development meant that a new location was required. In 1926 land was purchased with play commencing on the now current site. Above is a photo of the original founders of Karori/Manor Park Golf Sanctuary 1913.

BOULCOTT’S FARM TAKE DOWN MANOR PARK IN OTAKI CUP Last month Round 6 was played at Shandon Golf Club and Boulcott’s Farm against all predications beat Manor Park on a day of ideal golfing weather. With the Shandon course with hard and fast fairways and

very good greens produced a barrage of birdies for both teams but it was Boulcott’s Farm who came out on top and halted Manor Parks charge at the top 4 qualifiers for the Duncan Cup. The morning foursomes were won 3-2 by Boulcott’s Farm who also prevailed in the afternoon singles with good wins achieved by Matt Spraggs 3/2 over Jonathon Cane, the experienced Todd Keenan 5/4 over David van Drimmelen, Eden Mc Cabe 4/2 over Amand Hill, the young Zach Boyle 5/4 over John Warrington and Sam Govind and Damien Walker winning 2/1 and 4/2 respectively. Royal Wellington have 1 hand on the Otaki Cup with a solid win over Paraparaumu who like MP have stumbled badly in the last 2 rounds. Royal Wellington were strengthened with the return of Fraser Maclachlan. Mike Trass & Myles Averns with Grant Watkins & Ben Slaven helped Royal Wellington to a 3 -2 lead at lunch after the foursomes. In the singles Royal Wellington performed very well in some very closely contested matches six of them going to the 17th and beyond. In the final round RW play bottom placed Masterton. Miramar need a haul of points in their match against Masterton and that happened with a convincing 12.5-2.5 win over Masterton saw them climb to the top of the Otaki Cup points table but they have the bye in the final round. Miramar dominated the morning foursomes 4-1 with good wins recorded by team captain Adam Church

and partner Sam Penrice. In the afternoon singles matches Miramar, knowing they had the bye in the final round, fought hard and came home 8.5 -1.5. Strong win’s were recorded by the Tuoro brothers Jeff and Phil. There is only 3 teams that can win the Otaki cup. Miramar lead on 56 points with RW 49, and Shandon on 45.5.

WAIKANAE CUP The Waiknane Cup played last month found 6 of the 7 Waikanae Cup 36-hole Interclub teams preparing to make the most of those conditions and give the Te Marua golf course the best that they could muster. (36-hole competitions are played on a neutral course with the venue club hosting the event – 15th March was Te Marua’s day.) The course was dry and to quote one participant, “playing short”, a factor which added an extra element of challenge for just about everyone, a challenge aptly described with the words “downwind you can’t stop it, up wind, you can’t get it there”. But the conditions were the same for everyone and that’s the beauty of the game of golf ! Foursomes matches in the morning were keenly contested. Judgeford continued their good form with a 4-1 win over Shandon, while Wainuiomata prevailed 3-2 over Titahi and Carterton 3-2 over Karori. The wind strengthened in the afternoon and more players than expected found Te Marua’s signature #1 hole (across the riv-

With the morning foursomes all square Shandon got off to a great start leading in 8 singles matches and Paraparaumu fighting back to square some matches through 9 holes. Shandon drew away and finished strongly posting an 8-2 singles scoreline. Brady Bernard was the only bright spot for the Kapiti coast team with a 7/6 win. Shandon’s Devon Kay and Luke Leesburg posting 5/4 wins and Peter Brinsdon finishing with 4 birdies in a row to win and cap off a great team effort.

Masterton v Boulcott’s Farm In the battle between the bottom two teams Boulcott’s Farm got off to an early advantage in the foursomes leading by 3.51.5. In the singles big wins to Konrad Chee 8/6 for Boulcott’s Farm and Tony Russo 7/6 for Masterton. In the end Boulcott’s Farm were two strong, with the morning singles being the difference after the afternoon singles were shared 5 a piece.

Royal Wellington v Miramar The top of the table clash between Miramar and Royal Wellington was as close as expected and Miramar held a slight advantage after the morning foursomes by 3-2 and with a big win to Thomas SpearmanBurn and Hayden Ring 7/6 over Royal Wellington’s Haupai Puha and Brayden Mazey. In the singles Spearman-Burn beat fellow Wellington team mate Brayden Mazey 1up and Tam Slaven had a 7/6 win over Peter Grace. Miramar’s experience saw them sneak in by the narowest margins by 8-7. This leaves Shandon out in front on 45.5

Karori and Titahi could not be separated all day, sharing both the morning foursomes 2.5 each and the afternoon singles 5 each for a drawn match 7.5 to 7.5. After the five rounds, Judgeford lead the Waikanae Cup with 41.5 points, followed by Carterton with 39 and Wainuiomata tied with Te Marua in third with 36.5 points.

Otaki Cup Round 4 played at Royal Wellington Sunday 2nd March 2014 Royal Wellington’s new layout proved extremely tough with firm greens and tough pin placements making it tough for players who got out of position, but it was a fair but albeit a tough test.

Paraparaumu v Manor Park Paraparaumu got off to the best possi-

ble start in the morning foursomes beating Manor Park 5-0 with 4 of the matches going to the 18th hole. James Jennings & Frank Borren beat Carl Tupangaia & Jonathan Cane 1up. Manor Park bounced back in the afternoon singles winning 7 of the 10 matches but with the solid morning lead p prevailed by the smallest margin by 8-7. Peter Brinsdon and Marc Jennings winning 3/2, Mark Whalen & Marty Veale 3/2, Luke Leesburg & Stephen Thomson 3/1 Shandon put the foot down in the singles only dropping 1.5 games with Stephen Thomson losing to Adam Ross 2/1 but the rest of Shandon’s team winning comfortably giving the afternoon score an 8.5 to 1.5 score line and a overall score of 12.5 to 2.5.

Miramar v Boulcott’s Farm Boulcotts Farm got off to a great start in the morning foursomes with the Miramar team slow out of the gates and held a 3 to 2 lead to Boulcotts Farm with wins toZach Boyle and Konrad Chee 3/2 and James Walusewski Matt Spraggs 2/1 with

the other 2 matches finishing all square. Miramar’s lone win was to Thomas Spearman-Burn and Hayden Ring beating Elton Nicholson Todd Keenan 3/1. Miramar came back strongly to win the singles 8 to 2 to show a great fightback after being 5 all at the half way stage and winning the singles 10 to 5.

Waikanae Cup played at Wainuiomata Saturday 1st March Karori and Te Marua had a close fought morning in their foursomes with Karori edging ahead 3-2. Te Marua are performing well in their singles matches in this early part of the season and they edged ahead in the afternoon singles (6 to 4) to win the match 8 to 7. The Shandon and Carterton match followed a similar theme in the morning foursomes round with Shandon taking a 3-2 lead going into the afternoon singles matches. Shandon continued accumulating wins to take out the singles (6 to 4) and taking the win 9 to 6. The last match was fought out between Judgeford and Titahi. The Judgeford team dominated the morning with a 4 to 1 lead going into the afternoon singles and then clearing up the result with a stunning 9 to 1 win in the singles, to win the match 13 to 2. After three rounds, Te Marua lead the Waikanae Cup with 35 points, followed closely by Carterton on 34 with Judgeford in 3rd place with 31.5 points. 

15 year old Cromwell College school pupil Inia Logan has shot 59 off the stick at Otago’s Intercollegiate tournament this month. Roxburgh might only be a par 68, but it is one of the tightest tracks around. Many of the fairways are only about 20 metres wide with heavy scrub and huge rocky outcrops right down to the fairway edges. There are many, many places where you can’t even get into to look for a ball if you miss a fairway. Several fairways have big rock islands in the centre of them and there are 10 holes with “out of bounds” very much in play. In fact, Inia hit a rock in the first fairway and almost bounced out of bounds. If he
