Real men do cry, just like Bubba I

t was one of those cringe moments. I was watching the television evening news and keenly awaited the report on the Masters golf tournament won earlier in the day by Bubba Watson. The item was introduced with the comment that Bubba didn’t quite blubber like he did when he won the same tournament two years earlier. I couldn’t believe it. So what, I thought. I understand there is a rhyme between Bubba and blubber and Watson had been very tearful when he won in 2012. But the word blubber is hardly an endearing term. It is more associated with a blubbering fool or some kind of sook. It was almost a return to the old fashioned notion that real men don’t cry. There were tears again for Bubba (real name Gerry) this year. But the fact that there was tears underlined one very important fact

– it meant a lot to him. A very lot. The Masters is the most important tournament to an American golfer. It is the tournament that even non-golfers remember the winner of. Watson is clearly an emotional individual and his win in 2012 could hardly have been more emotion-charged. It was only some weeks earlier that he and his wife had adopted a month-old son. On the golf course the win came to a dramatic finish with a play-off required. In the play-off Watson played one of the most memorable shots in golf. From the trees he hit a 52 degree wedge with 40 yards of hook, landed the ball on the green and saved par to gain victory. After the 2012 win Watson was asked if he ever dreamed of a win in the Masters. I loved his reply. He said his dreams never got that far. This year was not so dramatic. Watson held his nerve for 18 holes to win by three

shots from youngster Jordan Spieth whose challenge wilted on the back nine. But after containing his emotions for 18 holes, Watson again had tears when the realisation hit home that he had won again. I, too, had tears that Watson had tears. I understood that such a win means the world to him. I understood that when a golfer misses the cut the income is zero. I understood the thousands of practice of balls hit in the hope that one day a dream just like this would become reality. It made me think of the Olympics. We often see gold medalists in tears as they stand on the podium with the anthem of their country being played and their flag being raised. It’s a highly-emotional time, so much so that sometimes even the silver and bronze medalists are also in tears. They, too, have strived for years for a moment like this. But I’m sure the television evening news would not refer to them as blubber heads. Real men do cry.

Toomey takes Waikato’s tally to five in NZ Strokeplay

uke Toomey became the fifth player from Waikato to win the New Zealand Men’s Strokeplay Championship when he scored in the 60s in all four rounds of the tournament in Hastings. Toomey, 21, from the Riverside Golf Club, joined Ted McDougall (Tokoroa), Brad Shilton (Te Awamutu), Colin Taylor (Hamilton) and James Gill (Hamilton) as previous Waikato winners of the St Andrews’ Salver. Toomey had scored 69, 69 and 68 in the first three rounds of the par 72 course of the Hastings Golf Club and then reeled off another 69 in the final round to finish at 10 under par and win by two shots. The New Zealand representative was just pleased to get the job done after being the third round leader in the same tournament two years earlier and emulating the feat of last year’s winner Cam Jones. `Ì am just absolutely stoked to no longer be a bridesmaid and to win this after one of my best friends in Cam [Jones] last year makes it really special,” Toomey said. `Ì have had that many second and third places I have been wondering when it would be my turn. To open it up at the New Zealand Stroke Play is unbelievable.” Toomey got off to the worst possible start in the last round when he made a double bogey on the opening par five when he hit his approach with a three wood out of bounds. `Ì made a four foot putt there for double and I took some positives from that into the next few holes.” Toomey brushed off the bad start and made four birdies in a row in what was a tournament-defining stretch where he earned a three shot lead heading into the back nine. There was more trouble on the par four 11th hole when he blocked his tee shot right and had to chip out backwards. The result was a double bogey and all of a sudden Toomey and Aucklander Sam An were tied at the top.

`Ì seemed to keep giving the guys a chance but overall I am really pleased with my performance. The holes that followed the bad ones were spectacular.” Like he did on the front nine, when he looked vulnerable, Toomey came back harder. He hit a superb approach to the par four 12th from 128m and made the 15 foot putt to get back into the lead and from there he never looked back. `Ìt was really gutsy to make birdie on 12 and that gave me the belief again. Putts seemed to drop at the right moment and I am stoked.” Toomey said it was nice to add his name to the list of top names on the St Andrews Salver that includes the likes of McDougall, Ross Murray, Marcus Wheelhouse, Gareth Paddison and Tim Wilkinson. ``There are many legends on there, and don’t forget that Brad Kendall and Cameron Jones are on there too,’’ he added with a laugh. He is hopeful that this performance is noted by the selectors as he looks to make the New Zealand team to compete in the Eisenhower Trophy in Japan. `Ìt is good timing with the Eisenhower coming up – it is the biggest teams’ championship in the world and naturally I want to play it – but I don’t want to get too caught up in whether I am going to get selected or not.”

Geary’s brilliant first two rounds set up victory J osh Geary (pictured) won the Akarana Open in Auckland but it wasn’t the cakewalk it promised to be. The Bay of Plenty professional went into the final round of the Charles Tour event, sponsored by Recreational Services, with a seven-shot advantage and all bets were on Geary. The lead was increased to nine when Geary birdied three of the first five holes of the last round but it was another Bay of Plenty professional, Peter Lee, who provided the Sunday fireworks. Lee, 19, scored a brilliant six-under 64 on a wet and cold day which provided some anxious moments for Geary whose winning margin was reduced to two by the day’s close. Geary, 29, posted a final round score of even par 70. His putting let him down over the latter stages but he remained delighted that he had held on for victory. ``I am really happy with the win,” Geary said. ``It was a bit of an anti-climax the way I played the final few holes but the putter was just dead cold all day. I played really solid, I just didn’t hole anything. It is still great to win.” The win was set up by two great rounds in a tournament shortened to 54 holes after the first day was washed out by bad weather.

Geary scored a course record 62 in round one and topped it off with 64 in the second round. He said he did not necessarily play well above himself in the first two rounds. ``They didn’t feel like they were that far out of reach. It was comfortable shooting eight and six under and today would have been the same if the putter was behaving. That is where my game is at right now. I feel like I am ready to win at the next level. I am pumped.” Geary said he felt like he was coming into some of his best form and was excited about his prospects for the remainder of the year. He was seeing his coach James Kupa a lot more now that he is based in New Zealand. ``I haven’t had that luxury the last six years as I have been overseas by myself. sistency of ball striking up. ``I am 29, turning 30 this year, so that is when most golfers come to the peak of their career. My mental game is in good shape, my swing is feeling great and my life is pretty balanced right now so it is good to get out there and enjoy playing some good golf.” The win was Geary’s fourth on the Charles Tour which is a New Zealand circuit for professionals and promising amateurs. The other three wins came in his home-town event of the Carrus Open in Tauranga. ``I have always felt that I have had the ability to win all over New Zealand but when I have had to win away from home on the Charles Tour I haven’t quite had my game. My game is at a higher level from what we have worked on.” Geary’s fourth title moves him to joint second on the all-time wins list on the

Charles Tour alongside New Zealand No 2 Michael Hendry and one behind five-time winner Doug Holloway. `Ìt is awesome to get my fourth one. I have a bit more time this year and I am hoping to get a few more wins under my belt on the Charles Tour. Winning breeds that belief that you are good enough to win and it helps a huge amount when you go overseas to compete in bigger events. It doesn’t matter what level you are at. It breeds confidence.” Second at Akarana was Lee who finished on 12 under par with scores of 69, 65 and 64. Auckland professional Ryan Fox was third on 10-under par while Blair Riordan, from Tasman, was a further two shots back but claimed the North Island Strokeplay title as the leading amateur. Riordan, 23, from the Takaka Golf Club, with his older brother Sean caddying for him, won the North Island Strokeplay by three shots from Tae Koh of Auckland. Riordan, a New Zealand representative, has contended many times in national events and was rapt to claim some long awaited silverware. `Ìt wasn’t easy out there but I played pretty awesome all day,” said Riordan after the final round. `Ì have come close to winning national titles so many times. It is a great feeling to finally get over the line.”

Swing changes work a treat for Caroline Bon N

orthland professional Caroline Bon (pictured) came into the Akarana Open in Auckland wanting to test out some swing changes under pressure. She passed with flying colours – and went home winner of the tournament, sponsored by Recreational Services, which is part of New Zealand’s Charles Tour. The event was shortened to three rounds after the first day was cancelled because of bad weather. Bon had scores of 70, 71 and 69 to finish at six under par and four shots ahead of her nearest rival, Auckland amateur Munchin Keh. Bon, 26, was delighted with the win and said the key to her performance was keeping out of trouble in the testing conditions. ``I just stayed in play, I was really steady out there today,” she said after her final round. ``I made one bogey but apart from that it was just a solid round of golf.” Bon made four birdies and a bogey in her final round. She was happy with her swing changes that she felt would lead to more consistent golf. ``There is a bit of homework to do. I have two weeks back with my coach so I am looking forward to that. It is definitely getting better.” The former New Zealand Strokeplay champion believed her game had improved in the past six months. She had a couple of good finishes in Asia and is putting herself into a position to win. ``Winning at any level is pleasing. I have bigger things in mind this year and my main goal is to be ready for China, so it is good to not only bed in some swing changes but also win.” Bon is aiming to finish on the top 10 top of the money list for both the Asia and China Tours so she can play in some cosanctioned events on the Ladies European

Tour and Ladies Professional Golfers’ Association Tours. She paid tribute to the Charles Tour for fine tuning her game in the meantime. ``The Charles Tour is awesome. It is so good to have this number of people to play against. I am so close to home and it is so cheap to travel here and I get some really meaningful competition to be better prepared for bigger events.” Meanwhile Keh’s second placing meant for the second year in a row she took out the North Island Strokeplay Championship which was run in conjunction with the Akarana Open. Keh, 21, from the Titirangi Golf Club in Auckland, was disappointed to lose the Charles Tour title to Bon but pleased to defend her North Island title in style. The New Zealand representative won by six shots from fellow Auckland rep Celyn Khoo. ``It is a little bit disappointing because I wanted to win the overall title,” said Keh. ``But to defend my title is great and I need to take the positives from that.” Keh said the key to her win was sticking to her processes and not thinking about the result. On the last day she rued making a double bogey on the par 5 12th and bogeys on 13 and 16 which ended her Charles Tour title hopes. ``I played well throughout; there was just a couple of holes where I lost the momentum and I couldn’t get close to Caroline.” ``My game is showing some progress and I feel like I am getting better as a player. It is cool travelling around the country to play in different events and be tested by different conditions.”

Good final round by NZ in Queen Sirikit Cup New Zealand avoided the wooden spoon with a good final round in the Queen Sirikit Cup in Malaysia to finish in a share of 10th place. The Kiwi team, which began the third and final round in 13th place of 13 teams, jumped three places at the Saujana Golf and Country Club when it combined for a much-improved one-over par 145 total in the format where the best two scores out of three count. Wellington’s Julianne Alvarez saved her best till last when she had an even-par 72 while Munchin Keh carded a one-over par 73. Her younger sister Wenyung had a two-over par 74 in the final round. The New Zealand team finished the event 32 shots behind the winner Korea which continued its remarkable run with a six stroke victory over China and the Philippines. The Queen Sirikit Cup is an annual contest between up to 14 nations from the Asia-Pacific region, which is officially known as the Amateur Ladies’ Asia-Pacific Invitational team championship. New Zealand has won the Queen Sirikit Cup on three occasions with the successes coming in 1984, 1990 and 1999.

Doing our bit to encourage club membership

t has been a busy time in New Zealand Golf’s community team as we look to make a real impact in the clubs and communities space in 2014. NZ Golf’s national community manager Kenny Halliday has recently employed two regional club capability managers in Carl Fenton (Auckland and North Harbour) and Mark Webb (Bay of Plenty and Waikato). This is a positive step for NZ Golf and the game in this country as these men look to make a difference in this challenging area. We look forward to seeing the fruits of their work in the regions with a recent facilities’ study providing a blueprint for change. There are a number of NZ Golf-led initiatives underway that are designed to achieve the goals of growing and supporting the game across the country. One of these initiatives is the sharing of information in case studies from successful golf clubs around the country. We know that clubs are struggling with member recruitment, member retention and a host of other issues. It is not easy out there. NZ Golf is focused on making an impact in this area by creating a greater community.

The case studies are designed to celebrate innovative thinking and success in clubs and communities around New Zealand. They are also a key way that clubs, communities and regional sports trusts can learn from each other through effective practice and relevant findings for all golf clubs. I applaud the golf clubs – Pupuke, Manawatu and Akarana -- who shared their success stories in the launch of this campaign. It is great to read their success stories and hear of times where clubs are making positive changes in their clubs. The examples these clubs offered in innovative ways to attract more juniors, women and younger adults into the game were brilliant and I hope that clubs around the country can learn from their example. I encourage all golf club managers, district associations and regional sports trusts to share their success stories to help one another. Yes it is a competitive market out there but we are all in this together. Another initiative in the community space, which is being led by our marketing manager Jan Rowsell, is the LOVE Golf campaign. This has already achieved

success around the country and we are only just scratching the surface of its potential. The member-get-member campaign is already having an impact. If you are a club member get a friend involved in the game that we love and you could be playing in the New Zealand Open next year. Well done to all the clubs who have opted to be part of this campaign, we will deliver you huge value for money as you look to promote your club to a greater level. We know that the clubs across New Zealand are struggling but the LOVE Golf campaign has been a good reminder of what we all love about this great game. It is not all doom and gloom and we love golf because there is no other game like it. For me, I love nothing more than playing a round at my home course, Manawatu, with my father. That love of the game is the reason that all of the team at New Zealand Golf is determined and working hard to create a sustainable and positive future for golf. We hope that many years from now people will look back on 2014 as a watershed year for our sport and a time for positive change.

Golf can be good for business A

s I walked the fairways of the New Zealand Open at The Hills and Millbrook in February, it was great to see the amateurs enjoying golf with their golf professional partners. It was good watching these top businessmen and former top sportsmen engaging with the golf professionals and fellow amateur players. Many relationships were forged and strengthened. I know many of the caddies developed some great relationships and may have jobs for next year’s event; one caddy is even off to Japan later in the year to caddy for the pro he met at the NZ Open. Back in January, NZ Prime Minister John Key and his son Max enjoyed a memorable four hours or so, on the golf course playing with US president Barack Obama. Spending four hours with a US president is something that every world leader would covet as a time to relax and chat whilst having fun at the same time. Moving forward, our PM and the US president will have an informal mutual bond that will endure thanks to golf. The joy of golf is that it brings together all sorts of personalities; people of different backgrounds, occupations, demo-

graphics and abilities allowing them to interact in a social yet competitive environment. Golf really is a game that can connect many people from all walks of life; it is the ultimate leveller and can even involve non-golfers with alternate formats such as ambrose or best ball. Of course business and golf are a great partnership but I don’t believe that New Zealand businesses always maximise and leverage the opportunities that golf provides. In North America, golf and business form an effective tandem in forging stronger relationships and the time invested reaps the dividends. I often see corporate teams in charity or fundraising golf events where the manager or sales representative has brought along three friends with the goal of winning the event rather than growing his business. Heck, he could win the event but more importantly he could grow his business. Inviting three clients to play in your team at your next golf event is a great way to build your business relationships and grow friendships. What I have also learned from over 30 years in the golf industry is that golfers’ traits on the course often mirror their

life. Over four hours, they are essentially naked. If they go for that near impossible shot then they probably love to roll the dice and take a gamble in business. If they take the rules for granted then they will probably do that with your contract and if they have a problem recording their score accurately then you definitely don’t want them as your accountant. How fast do they play? How do they interact with the other players? Do they show courtesy to the other golfers? Often their gamesmanship and style of play can be very telling. Think about the relationships you have made on the golf course and how your life and business have been affected by the people you have met. Would you have met these same people and learned as much about them without playing golf with them? I like to think that at the end of a round of golf, I will know up to three new things about the person with whom I am playing. Ideally, they will know a little more about me, too. This I hope will increase my circle of friends and probably assist my business along the way. I wonder what things John Key learned from his round with Barack Obama?

Gentlemen versus players

t’s no secret that New Zealand Golf and the Professional Golfers’ Association of New Zealand are currently in discussions that could ultimately lead to the two organisations merging to form a single entity governing the game in this country. Less commonly known is, if it proceeds, it would be a world first – no other country has attempted or managed to roll together the amateur and professional arms of the game under one umbrella. In most other sports, such as cricket, tennis, rugby and a host of others – boxing being the only exception – the distinction between amateur and professional players has simply been removed. With it, the need for separate administrative bodies has gone as well. So why is golf different? Some of the answers can be found in the appendix to the rules of golf dealing with the rules around amateur status. These (including a short section on gambling) run to nearly 20 pages, indicating that the Royal & Ancient and the United States Golf Association see this as no simple matter. It would be easy to accuse golf of being mired in tradition while the rest of the world has moved on, and there is some truth in this. Other sports recognised, at one point or another, that society was changing and that true amateurism – playing without any remuneration – was impossible given the globalisation of sport and the need to treat it as a full time occupation rather than a pursuit of leisure by an idle (but talented) elite. Initially this was tackled by back door methods such

as under the table payments, reimbursement of ``expenses”, employment by benefactors in undemanding jobs which left the player free to practice, train and play, ``ghost writing” using the players name as a by-line, and so on. Let’s not forget that rugby ran along these lines until less than 20 years ago. However, most sports soon saw the futility of this, especially where competition against countries with massive government sports funding programmes was involved. The Olympic Games, which started from a foundation of pure amateurism, has arguably been the greatest factor in the acceleration of professionalism. With golf, the rules governing amateur status have been progressively relaxed to allow expense payments, scholarships, writing for money, receiving free equipment and so on. In theory prize money (or its equivalent) is restricted, but an amateur can win a car of any value as a hole in one prize, and boundaries have been stretched in other areas. The only remaining prohibition is coaching for money, and it seems only a matter of time before this one goes as well. When that day arrives, will there be any need for separate bodies? In theory no, but several centuries of tradition could get in the way – just think of all the famous amateur trophies that could disappear or have to be played for as open events. By contrast, all cricket lost when it made the transition was the annual gentlemen

versus players match. Other key questions will be around the making of rules – traditionally the premise of the amateur bodies, but where the interpretation generally falls to professional administrators and referees, or your local club professional. The PGA will also be reluctant to see amateurs stepping into their territory by giving instruction for money. There will have to be more focus on growing the game for the future, rather than protecting the past, and it will need strong leadership from both sides of the fence. In the end, the Olympic Games might well be the catalyst that breaks the circuit, and again New Zealand could be poised for a fantastic double: the first country to bring golf under a single administration, and a gold medal for Lydia Ko at Rio in 2016.

There will have to be more focus on growing the game for the future, rather than protecting the past...

Japanese winner loved the bacon and eggs

15-year-old showed up the locals when she became the first Japanese golfer to win the New Zealand Strokeplay Championship in its history of more than 100 years. Minami Katsu (pictured) began the final round with a six shot lead and completed a superb performance when she carded a four-under par 70 at the Hastings Golf Club to win by seven shots and set a record for the event. Amazingly another Japanese player Haruka Morita finished third after she three-putted the last hole for par while Munchin Keh, from Auckland, edged into second by chipping in on the final hole for an eagle two. But the week was all about the performance of Katsu. The Mellsop Cup, which dates back to 1911 and has been won by many of New Zealand’s best, had not previously been won by a Japanese player. Speaking through a translator Katsu said: `Ìt is a huge honour to be the champion in New Zealand. I am very happy.” Katsu made five birdies and a bogey in her final round and never looked like relinquishing the lead. She had rounds of 69, 70, 68 and 70 for an incredible 19-under par total for a record tournament total. In recent times New Zealand’s Lydia Ko was seven-under par when she won in 2011 at the Russely Golf Club and the last time Hastings staged the championship Emily Perry and Ko finished on 12-under par before Perry prevailed in the playoff. Katsu said: `Ì tried to treat it like it was the first day of the championship and that helped me to stay calm. I am so happy to have that record. Her best memories from New Zealand were making a long putt for birdie in the third round and the food she had eaten. `Ì love the bacon and egg quiche ... and the summer fruit. I love the food here.” She was one of six Japanese golfers (three men and three women) in New Zealand to compete in the championship to further develop the international expe-

rience of the players in the country’s national team. It was believed to be the first time that Japanese golfers had contested the New Zealand Strokeplay. The diminutive Katsu, who had a world ranking of 142 and the Japan No 2, said this win would help her self-belief. ``Winning this championship will give me a lot of confidence. I will continue to practice hard and look to improve for the big tournaments coming later in the year.”

NZ Golf: Reciprocal Visiting Rights agreement letter

ew Zealand Golf would like to advise all affiliated golf clubs to take appropriate action to safeguard against the changes to the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012. The point of most concern is Section 60 of the Alcohol Act which outlines the sale and supply of alcohol in clubs is to members and guests only. This Section of the Act questions whether “Reciprocal Visiting Rights” to golf clubs around New Zealand are afforded the same rights as members and guests of that club. There is still a large amount of uncertainty and ambiguity around the Act, but National, Regional and Local Government agencies are taking this matter extremely seriously and are taking appropriate action against any club that that is found to be in breach. As a way to support all affiliated golf clubs, their members and guests, a Reciprocal Visiting Rights agreement

NZ women’s foursomes goes to North Otago pair The North Otago pairing of Karen Devlin and Patricia Hollows prevailed in a tense final to win the New Zealand Women’s Autumn Foursomes Championship. Devlin and Hollows were taken to the 18th hole of the final for a 1 up win over the Geraldine pair of Ali Romeril and Jenny Lawson at the Cromwell Golf Club. In taking out the title, Devlin and Hollows won all six rounds of foursomes’ matchplay. Their first round was against Jenny Senior and Gayle O’Duffy (Methven), which they also won 1 up. Their next match was against Lois Mitchell (Lumsden) and Shona Elder (Te Anau) which they won 2 and 1 and their easiest win came against Pip Idour (Otago) and Terry Cain (Christchurch) which ended with a 6 and 5 result. In the quarter-finals they beat Pat Crengle and Andrea Mark, from Paraparaumu, 2 and 1. Their semi-final provided another close encounter with them winning 1 up over June Watson and Gabrielle Martin (Arrowtown).

ew Zealand Golf has won the award for innovation excellence at the annual New Zealand Sport and Recreation sector awards with its video announcing Lydia Ko becoming a professional golfer. The announcement broke with the traditional press conference and instead a video was produced and released on social media, via YouTube. The video included All Black rugby player Israel Dagg which broadened its appeal outside of the normal golfing audience. Jan Rowsell, the marketing manager of New Zealand Golf, said it was great for NZ Golf and creative partners Augusto to be recognised on the national stage. ``It is a huge honour to receive this award,” Rowsell said. ``It is great to gain recognition for the innova-

tive way in which NZ Golf and Augusto worked together to make a highly anticipated sporting announcement. ``We’re very fortunate to have Lydia Ko, she’s a fantastic ambassador for golf and New Zealand and making her announcement to turn pro in this way was truly befitting to her age, personality and generation. ``It also achieved great outcomes for golf in showcasing the game in a fun, youthful and refreshing light on a global stage.” The Ko Goes Pro video received more than 115,000 views on YouTube. The video was the first instalment in the LOVE Golf campaign. The campaign is the first time that New Zealand Golf has undertaken a nationwide promotion of golf with the aim to drive golf club membership and promote participation and change perceptions of the game.

Nelson on show in Festival of Golf

ollowing the outstanding success of the inaugural Nelson Festival of Golf last year, planning is well underway for the 2014 tournament. In 2013 this challenging tournament attracted players from 54 golf clubs around New Zealand including from Opotiki in the north to Port Chalmers in the south. More than twothirds of players came from outside the Nelson region. The tournament is staged at Nelson Golf Links, Greenacres and Motueka Golf Courses with two days to be played on the Nelson Golf Links which has also been chosen to host the 2014 New Zealand Amateur Championships in April this year and for the 2015 Seniors Championships. The courses are all very different. Nelson is a true links course, Motueka is a mature parkland course, with Greenacres offering a mix of waterfront and parkland holes. Tournament dates for 2014 Nelson Festival of Golf are Monday 20 – Friday 24 October with a rest day on the Wednesday to allow competitors to put their feet up or get out and about and visit the many attractions the region has to offer. The tournament overlaps again with the Nelson Arts Festival which is a great bonus for non playing partners making the trip to Nelson. The organising committee has decided to keep the number of entries to 128, the same as last year, because this created both a competitive yet friendly environment for

all the participants. By the end of the week players had golfed with and made friends with other golfers from all over New Zealand. Derek Drysdale the Tournament Director said, “at the final prize giving on the Friday it was really pleasing to hear many of the competitors refer to this event as ‘the friendly tournament.” “We are delighted that over 36 players who played in the tournament last year have already registered to enter the tournament again this year,” Derek said. “So if you are keen to enjoy a week of golf in October in the stunning Nelson region, now is the time to register to avoid disappointment.” Sponsorship has been secured from Waimea Family Estate Wines and Taylor Made Golf and as always the event organisers ask that all competitors support our sponsors whenever possible. FEILDING LADIES GOLF PREMIER CHALLENGE Julie Cleaver and Norma O’Connor both from Te Ngutu Golf club are the 2014 Feilding Ladies Golf Premier Champions. The event played in early April and in it’s sixth year is a two day pairs event. The first day is at the Rangatira course, the competition is four ball best ball, following that all competitors returned to Feilding for drinks and a Dinner which this year was enjoyed by one and all. The next day the competition at Feilding is individual stableford played in divisions and in the background to this the pairs are playing for the best combined Nett over the two days. This format seems to be enjoyed by the players and although there are prizes both days the main prize for the pair that has the best Nett over the entire entire field

WHANGAREI GIRLS’ GET FIRST WIN The tenth annual Eagles College Golf Tournament at Northland Golf Club on 27th March, saw Whangarei Girls High School emerged victorious for the first time. A sign of the emerging talent in junior girls’ golf in Northland were the multiple rounds in the seventies from the girls with Soktaerodh Sean (Whangarei Girls’) leading the way with a personal best of 74. The best boys gross round of the day came from the runner up team Whangarei Boys’ 2, Daniel Millett recording a three under par round of 68. The competition format sees the best three of four stableford totals from each team count toward the teams overall total. Competition was close with just three points separating first (Whangarei Girls’) and second (Whangarei Boys’ 2). Third place went to the combined team from Kamo High School and Tauraroa Area School. Numbers overall were slightly down on the 2013 event with just six teams (2 combined from multiple schools). Across the field seven different schools were represented, those being Dargaville High

School, Kamo High School, Kerikeri High School, Rodney College, Tauraroa Area School, Whangarei Boys High School and Whangarei Girls High School.

Junior Pennant Update The Northland Junior Pennant competition has passed the half way stage and competition is close for the top four positions that gain entry into the semi-finals. Following the fifth round at Whangarei Golf Club recently it is the team from Whangaroa who sit atop the table having just beaten the previous pace setters and 2013 runners up Waipu. In third place is the composite team from Northland Golf Club and The Pines while the young team from Mangawhai round out the top four. There are now just two rounds left to play at Sherwood Park (May 11) and Mangawhai (May 19) for teams to foce their way in to semi-final contention. WAIPU to host CHARITY TOURNAMENT Waipu is hosting the Marsden Lions Annual Charity Tournament Friday 16th May. The entry fee is $75 which includes green fees, BBQ & drinks & a catered dinner plus all entrants receive a prize. This tournament is played in teams of four over 9 or 18 holes and is open to everyone at all levels. LEE TAKES OUT Harcourts Waitangi Pro Am Rotorua golfer Peter Lee (pictured right) won the Harcourts Waitangi Pro Am on Friday 4th April. Lee birdied the first hole in a sudden death play off to beat established NZ Tour Professionals Ryan Fox and Josh Geary. All three were tied on 66 after eighteen holes, setting a new course record off the Black Tees. The scene was set for a great day of golf with picture perfect weather and a course presented in immaculate condition. 32 Professional Golfers entered the tournament that is part of the Mondiale PGA New Zealand Order of Merit. Testament to the quality of the course 18 of the Pro’s scored par or better. Caroline Bon scored a creditable 70, 2 under par.

The Golf Professionals were joined by teams of three amateurs to participate in a Stableford format, with the best three scores on each hole counting. NEW WORLD EASTER CHARITY TOURNAMENT One of Warkworths largest fields was seen on the Saturday of Easter 2014, with a field of 104 turning up to play in the Easter charity tournament. Miraculously the weather conditions stabilised after a nervous week of weather watching for all involved. Simon Lean of Helensville GC took out top honours for the men with 44 stableford points and local Rosie Fowler scored 41 points to take out first prize in the ladies section.

Raising funds for the Omaha Beach Surf Life Saving Club, a cheque for $2000 was handed over at prize giving by general manger Mike Reid to Pat Daly of the Surf Life Saving Club. Added to by the sausage sizzle and other fun activities, all in all it was a prosperous day for a well-deserved charity. Wilmot Toyotas’ hole number 12 proved a difficult one though, with no one able to score the ever-elusive hole in one, which would of seen them winning a cool $10K towards the charity. Special mention must go to New World Warkworth, who sponsored the tournament, donated BBQ food and arranged wonderful Easter Hamper prizes. This generosity not only helped a worthy cause but was integral to the success of this community-focused event. The Warkworth Golf Club passes on it’s sincere thanks to all participants including Clint Brown and the Times FM team, who although did not feature in the winners circle avoided the ‘humpty’ prize and walked away with smiles on their faces!

JUNIOR TIGER The North Harbour 2014 Junior Tiger event was held on Sunday the 16th of March at the Whangaparaoa Golf Club. A host of young junior boys and girls attended the event with their parents and a fun day was had by all. The winners of the divisions were in the Boys 12-14 category James Hydes (Peninsula), in the Girls 12-14

category Ela Grimwood (Gulf Harbour), in the Boys 11 and Under Brian Heo (North Shore) and in the Girls 11 & Under category Silvia Brunotti (North Shore). They now head to the national final at Manawatu on April 27th. Goodluck to them!

SPORTS WORLD EASTER TOURNAMENT The Sports World Easter tournament was played Easter Saturday at Matamata Golf Club. The competition was weather affected with plenty of lightning and thunder, getting everybody back to the club house for an early lunch. GOLF TRAILS Golf Club holds its Waikato Farmers Cup competition (one of the longest running competitions in the Waikato) in conjunction with the final of the McFarlanes Contracting series. In its 75th year the best net goes to any Waikato farmer over 18 holes. Prizes also include 10 large silage bales, with another 30 up for auction. GILLIGAN CLEAR WINNER AT OMANU Anthony Gilligan from Australia made

eight birdies in his round of 65 to win the A1 Homes Omanu Legends Pro-Am by two shots. Gilligan bogeyed his second hole, the par three 17th, but made amends throughout the rest of his round to finish seven under par. The ever-present Peter Fowler was alone in second place on 67. There was a four way tie on 68, Aussies Richard Backwell, Peter Jones and Mike Zilko, and Canadian Ken Tarling. This year’s event saw a very strong field of over 40 professionals with a very international feel to it. A great day was had and top prize in the amateur team event was taken out by an Omanu A1 Homes team of Lou Campbell and Sam Peita.

Landyn Edwards has been crowned the winner of the Rotorua Open this month, holding a four-shot lead going into the final round, and finishing 13-under for the tournament. Over 100 golfers competed in the three day Open, which partnered with the New Zealand PGA Trainee Championship this year, giving it Pro-Am status.
