Can Campbell show some of that old magic?
f Michael Campbell was a racehorse he probably would have long been retired – out of form and too old. He hasn’t won a golf tournament for nine years. It’s not easy to win at the level he plays but when he promised so much, and delivered just as much, it does make you wonder what has happened to his form. In recent years it hasn’t so much been that he hasn’t won but that he has generally failed to figure. In racing terminology, he’s hardly paid a dividend. Missed the cut seems to have been his result more often than not. Some of us might mock Campbell for those results but I am sure there will be no one more disappointed than the man himself. The life of a professional golfer can fluctuate as quickly as the accuracy of your putting stroke. When you are swinging the club with ease, the scores look after themselves, the money flows in and life is a breeze. But when the swing is a little off, scoring becomes difficult and you start searching for answers. The answers never come easily. Playing golf for a living can be very harsh. When you miss the cut, the prizemoney is zero. Zero prizemoney can be all right it if it only happens occasionally but when it be-
comes a regular it isn’t much fun. Campbell has experienced both ends of the golfing spectrum. He won a swag tournaments before taking his career into the stratosphere in 2005. That year he won both the US Open and World Matchplay Championship. Let’s just put those two wins into perspective. The US Open is easily one of the most prized events in golf. It is one of four tournaments known as majors which some of the best players in the world fail to win. In the US Open he beat no less than Tiger Woods, who was in the prime of his career. Campbell banked $US1.1 million in prizemoney, earned life membership on the European Tour and later returned to Wellington for a street parade to celebrate the win. It was just the second time a New Zealander had won a major, following Bob Charles’ win in the 1963 British Open. A few months later came the World Matchplay Championship in England. In the semi-final he thrashed Retief Goosen 7 and 6, which came as a surprise to some. Goosen had recorded an amazing 12 and 11 win in his previous match and most bets were on him to win the tournament.
Campbell went on to beat Irishman Paul McGinley 2 and 1 in the final and pick up another handsome prize of more than 600,000 euros. Exchange rates at the time meant his wins in the US Open and World Matchplay amounted to more than $NZ3 million. He was subsequently named European Tour player of the year and took out the supreme prize at the New Zealand Halberg sports awards. To sum up, Campbell has done us proud. Very proud. But Campbell has played little golf of late. He had been troubled by an ankle injury and also revealed earlier this year that he and wife Julie had separated. Those difficult personal circumstances probably had more of an effect on his game than any physical injury. But Campbell is on the comeback again. He has relocated to Gibraltar, at the southern tip of Spain, where he has taken advantage of the good weather to work on his game. He was due to resume his career this month after not having played since January. Hopefully he can turn a new leaf and get his game back on track. At age 45 he is unlikely to recapture his very best form but I think we would all say welcome back, Cambo.

Eisenhower team for Japan in September A
uckland golfer Tae Koh will make his debut for New Zealand after being named as part of the team for the Eisenhower Trophy. Koh is joined by Joshua Munn, from Manawatu, and Vaughan McCall (Southland) for what is the world’s top teams’ event for amateur men. The Eisenhower will be staged in Japan from September 11-14, a week after the equivalent women’s event, the Espirito Santo Trophy, at the same venue. The Kiwis will be looking to follow in the footsteps of Michael Campbell, Phil Tataurangi, Grant Moorhead and Stephen Scahill who won the Eisenhower in 1992 in Canada. All three players have good experience on the international stage and form ahead of the event. Koh made a name for himself in January when he became only the third Kiwi golfer to win the Australian Amateur Championship. The 19-year-old from the Manukau Golf Club completed a dominant performance in the final to win 6 and 5 at The Grange Golf Club in Adelaide. Koh followed in the footsteps of Campbell (1992) and C E S Gillies (1899) as the only other Kiwis to have won the event. He continued that form back home. Koh came within one match of becoming the first Kiwi to win both the Australian and NZ Amateur titles. He battled valiantly with Munn in the final at the Nelson Golf Club to lose on the 37th hole. He has also shown his ability in strokeplay events. He was the runner-up in the New Zealand Strokeplay, runnerup in the North Island Strokeplay and third in qualifying for the NZ Amateur to comfortably lead the NZ Golf order of merit. Munn has also been a standout in recent times. The 23-year-old from the

Manawatu Golf Club secured what he called “the biggest win of my career” when he took out the NZ Amateur. Munn has been New Zealand’s most successful player over the past two years. Last year he won the Lake Macquarie Amateur in Australia for his first international title. He is the only amateur to have won twice on New Zealand’s Charles Tour (Harewood Open 2012 and Muriwai Open 2011) and has played a leading role in the wins of Manawatu–Wanganui at the 2012 Invitational and 2013 Interprovincial. McCall is the most experienced of the three players. In 2012 he announced himself on the local scene when he was the first golfer in 24 years to win both the New Zealand Amateur and the New Zealand Strokeplay in the same year. He was the leading individual for New Zealand at the 2012 World Amateur Team Championship in Turkey, when he finished in a share of 13th place.
Joshua Munn
More recently, he was the first Kiwi to qualify for the US Amateur Championship since Danny Lee when he delivered the “best mental performance of my life” in 2013. His best result in 2014 is finishing as the leading amateur at the LawnMaster Classic on the Charles Tour and the selectors have backed him on his significant experience on the world stage. The Eisenhower is held once every two years. It is a strokeplay event where the best two scores from three players count toward the team’s score for each round. More than 70 countries will be represented. The Eisenhower Trophy has been won by 10 different teams since the event began in 1958 at St Andrews in Scotland. The United States is the most successful country in the Eisenhower history with 14 wins. Great Britain and Ireland, who last combined as a team in 2000, has four wins and Australia has three titles.

Steve Alker in line to play the PGA Tour New Zealand golfer Steve Alker lost a playoff at the Boise Open in the United States but it virtually ensured he will be on the world’s richest golf circuit next year. Alker, from Hamilton, was tied for the lead at the end of the regulation 72 holes in the Idaho capital but was beaten on the first playoff hole. But more importantly for Alker the second placing moved him from 19th to ninth in the ranking on the Web.com tour which acts as development circuit to the PGA Tour in the United States, which carries golf’s greatest prizemoney. The top 25 on the Web. com tour earn the right to play on the PGA Tour. Alker’s second placing was worth $US86,000 which took his season’s prizemoney to $US211,000. The 42-year-old, who is now based in Phoenix, played the PGA Tour in 2003. His best finish that year came at the Buick Invitational where he finished 17th. Alker’s playoff loss was his first after three previous wins which came in the 2002 Louisiana Open, 2013 Utah Championship and this year’s 2014 Cleveland Open.
Munchin Keh a key member of NZ team to Espirito Santo in Japan WORDS Paul Gueorgieff
M
unchin Keh remembers well, for all the wrong reasons, the first time she represented New Zealand in an Espirito Santo Championship. The women’s world amateur teams’ event was being staged in Turkey in 2012 and Munchin had a golfer’s nightmare early in her first round. It came at a par three with a green mainly surrounded by water. Keh put her first three shots in the water and got onto the green for seven. She topped off hole with a three-putt and walked off with a score of 10. The following hole she had a treble bogey, the round had truly unravelled and she finished the day on 93. Keh was a wreck. It was her first international event and she wondered if she would be able to pick herself up. “The next day I was actually shaking on the range,’’ Keh recalled to Golfer Pacific. “It was my first international tournament and that added a bit of pressure.’’ But to Keh’s credit she bounced back. She posted scores of 73, 74 and 74 on the next three days which contributed to the team finishing a very respectable fifth. Keh now looks back on that tournament as a learning curve. “Feeling that nervous was all knew to me. When I look back it was all inexperience. But it has given me confidence that I can overcome such a situation.’’ The Espirito Santo is held once every two years and Keh is proud to again be part of the New Zealand team that will compete at the same tournament in Japan from September 3-6. The team comprises three players. Keh will be joined by Julianne Alvarez from
Munchin Keh. Photo: SIMON WATTS/BW Media
Wellington and former Bay Of Plenty player Zoe-Beth Brake, who is now based in the United States. Keh and Alvarez recently played three major tournaments in Japan and Singapore
with the express purpose of gaining experience on Asian courses in preparation for the Espirito Santo. Keh failed to make the top 32 for the matchplay section of the Japan Amateur but had better fortune in Singapore. She was fifth in the Singapore Amateur and third in the Warren Amateur, which were events that both carried world ranking points. Keh had played the Singapore Amateur the previous year and noticed this time round she was driving the ball further. “In Singapore I played more consistently and I was happy with my game, my driving in particular. “I could see the change in my length off the tee. I was hitting shorter clubs into the green than the previous year.’’ Keh, 21, has been a dominant force on the New Zealand scene for a few years now. She won the 2012 New Zealand Amateur, has two North Island Strokeplay titles and a South Island Strokeplay title. She has also won three times on New Zealand’s Charles Tour, with two victories in the Muriwai Open in Auckland and a win in the Lawnmaster Classic in Palmerston North. She has also twice represented New Zealand at the Queen Sirikit Cup in Malaysia and Taiwan, which is an Asia-Pacific version of the Espirito Santo. Keh, born in New Zealand, has been playing golf since she was about 14. “I used to follow dad and my brother along to the driving range. Then I started playing and just haven’t stopped.’’ She would eventually like to become a professional golfer. “I would like to when the time is right. I just need to get enough international experience in the meantime.’’

Brake recalled to represent New Zealand Z
oe-Beth Brake hasn’t played golf in New Zealand for four years but she will be part of the team that represents the country at the Espirito Santo Trophy in Japan from September 3-6. The former Bay of Plenty player took a break from golf to join the navy and more recently has been based in United States where she has been playing golf for the Ohio state university. Brake, 22, is a former New Zealand Strokeplay winner who last represented the country in 2010 when New Zealand hosted the Queen Sirikit Cup, which is an Asia-Pacific version of the Espirito Santo. The Espirito Santo is held once every two years and is the world’s top teams’ event for women amateur golfers. Brake is proud to once again represent New Zealand. “I am very excited to be back, you can’t beat the feeling of representing your country,’’ Brake said. She has been working hard on her game in recent times and not just on the
golf course. “The build up has been really good. I have been working with a sport psychologist on a regular basis, I train four or five times a week in the gym and practice six to seven days a week.’’ Brake is also in a very competitive i\ environment. “The standard is very high in college golf. We play against some of the best amateurs in the world on a regular basis. The courses are tougher and longer, and require you to have a bag full of different shots which I now have thanks to my two coaches at Ohio State.’’ The Espirito Santo team comprises three players. The best two scores on each day count toward the teams’ total. Brake will be partnered by Munchin Keh from Auckland and Julianne Alvarez from Wellington. Keh (who features on the cover of Golfer Pacific) has been the dominant force in New Zealand golf since the departure of Lydia Ko to the professional ranks
while Alvarez, similarly, has strong credentials. Alvarez, 18, won three titles in 2013 including the New Zealand Amateur, the New Zealand Under-19 title and the Harewood Open in Christchurch for the second year in succession. Her best results of 2014 include being the top qualifier at the New Zealand Amateur in Nelson and third at the Muriwai Open in Auckland. The Wellington No 1 has been a consistent performer for New Zealand on the international stage in the past three years since making her debut at the Astor Trophy in the United Kingdom in 2011. New Zealand has not won the Espirito Santo. Our best results are runner-up finishes in 1982 and 1990 at Geneva and Christchurch respectively. Two years ago in Turkey the New Zealand team, including Lydia Ko, was fifth. Ko was the leading individual of the tournament that year.
Ko’s efforts well rewarded Lydia Ko may have had a disappointing finish to the British Open but she still took home a handsome prize. The star New Zealand player went into the final round of the British Open at Royal Birkdale with an outside chance of victory but struggled in testing conditions to card an eightover par 80. That saw her slip to 29th place but she still picked up nearly $US23,000 ($NZ26,000) in prizemoney. That took her total earnings for the year to $US851,000 ($NZ975,000). The 17-year-old also maintained a remarkable record of not having missed a cut in a professional tournament. The three-time LPGA Tour winner had seven bogeys, a double-bogey and a birdie in her final round as she dropped back to nine-over for the week. However the world No 2 wasn’t alone as no player went under par in the final round as strong winds buffeted Southport. Ko was 10 shots from the winner Mo Martin, from the United States, who had a one-under par total after producing an incredible eagle on the 72nd hole.

Aucklander wins in Washington Auckland golfer James Beale has secured the biggest win of his amateur career by winning the Pacific Northwest Men’s Amateur Championship in Washington. Beale, who was studying at Mercer University in the United States on a golf scholarship, secured the victory when he defeated American Cole Madey on the second extra hole of the final. Beale, who the previous week had finished fourth in the Sahalee Players’ Championship, was tied with Madey after the regulation 36 holes. On the second playoff hole, with Madey in trouble, Beale played his second shot just off the green behind the hole, and putted to within tap-in distance. Under pressure Madey flubbed his first pitch, and when he missed his second chip from a similar position Beale had secured the title.
Geary posts first win on Sunshine Tour B ay of Plenty professional Josh Geary made the most of his escape from the New Zealand winter when he won the Mackay Open in Queensland. Geary has been based in the United States in recent years but this year has returned home to New Zealand and a reminder of what winter can bring. Consequently he needed little invitation to spend a few weeks in the warmth of Queensland which was topped off with the warm feeling of victory. But he had to overcome difficult conditions on the final day as well as fellow New Zealand player Daniel Pearce before prevailing. The 29-year-old began the final round one shot behind Pearce and was fast out of the blocks as he made birdies on his opening three holes to make the turn in four-under par to earn a two shot lead. Geary added another birdie at the 10th to extend his lead but then it went awry. He had back-to-back bogeys on the 11th and 12th and another at
the 16th which looked to have derailed his title chances. He rallied with par on the 17th and a birdie at the last which was good enough for a 15-under par total to secure a two shot win and his first victory on the Queensland Sunshine Tour. “I have really enjoyed the past week here in Mackay and it is great to have capped off the week with a win,” said the former Web.Com Tour player in the United States. “This is the first year I have not been living in America and with the weather being cold and miserable back home, I thought it would be a much better idea to fly over to Queensland and play a few events. “The tournament committee have done a wonderful job this week and if things don’t work out for me at the end of the year at qualifying schools, I would only love the chance to return and defend my title.” Geary’s win in Mackay backed up his impressive win last year at the Western Australian Open which was his first title on the

All smiles in ‘the land of smiles’ WORDS Peter McCarthy
A
lmost 300 Australian golfers and 42 from New Zealand travelled to Hua Hin in Thailand to compete in the inaugural Centara World Masters Golf Championship from 15 to 21 June. They were among the 500 participants from 23 countries, representing 193 golf clubs. It was the largest event of its kind ever played in Asia. The success of this week-long tournament has prompted organisers to plan an expanded event for 2015. The tournament is hosted by Gold Coast based Go Golfing and the week-long event was modelled on the successful ‘Masters’ tournaments they have hosted on the Gold Coast and in Tasmania for nearly 20 years. The Centara Masters is open to male and female club golfers aged 35 and over and is played in age and handicap divisions. Drawn in a different foursome each day, playing partners are always of a similar age and handicap, with the added bonus of playing alongside golfers from all over the world. Hua Hin, a comfortable 3 hour drive south of Bangkok, was voted ‘Best Golf Destination Asia Pacific’ at the annual IAGTO golf tourism awards announced in Spain last November. Joey Frank from Coffs Harbour, a first time traveller to Hua Hin to play in the Centara Masters, is adamant Hua Hin should win the title every year, “This place is just sensational. Everyone is smiling and just so helpful. It’s a beautiful beachside town with vibrant markets, restaurants, bars and nightlife. At $15 for a two hour massage and just $20 for dinner including drinks, it’s also unbeatable value.” A very happy Cliff Almond from Carbrook rated the event his best-ever golfing experience. “Black Mountain and Banyan would have to be the best courses I have played anywhere and Majestic Creek and Imperial Lake View were also a great challenge. We all received caddie bibs printed with our names and country flag, which our caddies wore each day. Playing with caddies is always a treat, but these caddies knew their stuff and were great fun. I know that when my caddie says 50/50 it means my ball is probably lost.” At its peak, Go Golfing’s World Masters tournament on the Gold Coast attracted
more than 1,000 golfers and tournament director Peter McCarthy is convinced the Centara World Masters will rival those numbers in a couple of years. “We are so delighted with the success of the event, and based on the overwhelming positive feedback from participants, we are planning for 700 plus players next year. “I have hosted tournaments all over the world for nearly 20 years and never have I been so overwhelmed by the hospitality we received in Hua Hin. One of the host courses, Imperial Lake View, knowing that they only had 15 female lockers, made available 20 adjoining hotel rooms for the ladies to store their valuables, shower and change after golf. On the Tuesday at Black Mountain we had rain just before the end of play and all clubs were put in a drying room overnight with industrial fans. The service at the hotels, courses and everywhere was just so helpful that we can’t wait to return in 2015.” Ross and Barbara Hopkins, of Caloundra on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast were typical of many participants who said the tournament exceeded all expectations. “It was a great experience and very professionally organised from start to finish,” Barbara said at the conclusion of the event. “We met some wonderful people, played some great courses and had a week to remember.” Fellow Queenslander, Denis O’Brien, was impressed with the quality of the courses. “They were all of a very high standard,” he said. “The locker rooms at the courses are fitted out better than 5 star hotels and the whole service just blew my mind.” Many participants extended their stay in Thailand to shop in Bangkok and enjoy the resort towns of Phuket, Pattaya and Chang Mai. The headline sponsor, Centara Hotels and Resorts, was backed by TaylorMadeadidas Golf, Chang Beer, Coca-Cola, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the City of Hua Hin and D’ablo Sportswear. A gala prize giving party at the Centara Grand Hotel saw the main lucky draw prize go to Sujurd Tsao of Taiwan, who won a return trip to the TaylorMade World Masters on the Gold Coast in October. Runner-up, Nat Anderson of Western Australia, won a trip to next year’s Centara World Masters which will run 14 to 20 June 2015.

Kiwis are making their marks on the world’s golf stages
A
s the great Arnold Palmer once said ``I’ve always made a total effort, even when the odds seemed entirely against me. I never quit trying; I never felt that I didn’t have a chance to win. “The King” summed up what is special about the game of golf. It is a game for life and success in golf can come at many points along the journey if you persevere. It’s a quality we have seen come to life in our Kiwis on tour in recent time. Steven Alker has shown that there are many roads to success. The 42-year-old, who was so unlucky to miss out on his PGA Tour card last year, has shown great character and perseverance to come back stronger this year. Alker has shown to all aspiring Kiwi professionals that success can be achieved through hard work. The former NZ PGA champion, who recently missed out on his second title on the Web.Com Tour at the Albertsons Boise Open in a playoff, has all but secured his card on the PGA Tour for the second time. Alker has spent more than 20 years on tours around the world and finally he gets his second chance at the big time. It is a noteworthy achievement. He will join fellow Kiwis Danny Lee and Tim Wilkinson on the tour in 2014–2015 (provided they can both keep their cards) and fulfil a long-held dream of competing with the best in the world
on a weekly basis. Alker has shown that he is good enough. In the past couple of years he has qualified for three major championships and never looked out of place among the game’s elite. He has also shown that success can come at many different stages of your golf career. Players mature at different times and Alker is playing some of the best golf of his life in his 40s. His example is a good one to follow for golfers of all abilities. Golf is a game that will keep giving throughout your life and the “never give up” mentality is a good mind-set to emulate to get through a rough patch and keep enjoying the game. There are others of course who have much more charmed paths to success. World No 2 Lydia Ko underlined her class recently when she came from behind to win for the second time this year and the fourth time in her career on the LPGA Tour. She is still only 17 and in touch of becoming the best player on the world rankings. That will be a truly remarkable achievement if she gets it done. Success on the world stage is an important pillar for New Zealand Golf and we are fostering a culture of celebrating our successes. It is great to see our best players enjoying success in many forms around the world every week on Sky Sport and we are sure that this will see more Kiwis engage with the game.

COMMENT
golferpacific.co.nz Resident Pro at Chisholm Park, Dunedin
I asked him what value he placed on his recreation. He was taken aback so I reworded my question. I asked ``if you were to advise someone to start playing golf, what would you say it would cost to start and play per year?” He thought $4000 was a fair number to start with and estimated yearly costs at approximately $3000. This would include clubs, membership and some social golf on holidays. I looked at his $1200 golf clubs (including the $400 driver that was now three years old) and the set hadn’t been re-gripped since he purchased them eight years ago. I looked at his $150 shoes that he purchased 18-months ago and I looked at his old $150 golf trundler. I then asked him what he had spent on his golf in the last three years excluding membership. He struggled to get past $1200, or about $400 per year. His grips were so worn he was struggling to hold onto the golf club causing his technique to get worse. He was also playing with cheap golf balls that were not suited to his swing speed, and with a sore back, he was using a golf trundler which required pulling when he should have been pushing. Plus his golf shoes had worn spikes so no wonder he was slipping. He quickly realised that in order to enjoy
y take s
ING
his game more, he needed to invest something into it. Was he going to buy a new set and go the whole way? No. We re-gripped his clubs to a grip size that suited his hands for $120 and he saw instant improvement. He bought a new golf trundler that he could push ($299) and that was a big hit. Along with a new No 4 hybrid that is perfect from the 150m mark, golf balls that are right for his swing, plus some better golf shoes that suit his feet. We have also undertaken a course of three golf lessons. So for less than $1000 he has already knocked six shots from his game, he feels more relaxed on the course and at the end of the round he has more energy thanks to the new trundler. What I am trying to say in this article is that most golfers I talk to don’t value golf as their recreation time. They don’t invest in their equipment and are often setting themselves up for poor results. Not everyone has extra dollars to spend on golf but when was the last time you actually re-spiked your golf shoes or re-gripped your golf clubs? It’s about enjoying the walk, having fun with your friends and the challenge of the game. Investing in yourself and your golf game will actually pay dividends in health, happiness and, oh yes, maybe bragging rights.

What value do you place on your golf? I recently had a golfer come to me for a golf lesson. He was keen to improve his game as he wasn’t enjoying it and he was ready to quit. He was in his mid-50s, had been quite athletic and enjoyed sports at school, yet he found golf to be a real challenge. This guy really loved golf and he enjoyed the golf club. He loved the concept of golf and especially the people he met playing and many were now good mates. He just believed he could not play to a standard where he could enjoy the game and actively compete with his friends without his handicap drifting out a few more shots into the mid-20s. So we started talking about why he played golf, what he did for a job, what he did for recreation and about his family and life in general. What I quickly learned was that golf was his number one recreational pursuit and that was where he loved to spend his time. He didn’t fish, own a boat, ride a bike or have any other expensive hobbies but golf was his thing. I started asking him about his non-golfing friends and asked him what they did for recreation and we started talking about their motorbikes, boats, $6000 road bikes, etc.

Sometimes it can be information overload A
round this time of the year the golf reporting industry springs into life, featuring a plethora of statistics and commentary on how golf has performed around the world in 2013. This provides a good test of whether you belong to the glass half empty or half full brigade. In one corner, you can note that golf club membership continues its slow decline in many parts of the world, that a large number of golf clubs are in financial difficulty, and that golf struggles to attract juniors, women and men under 45. In another corner, golf continues to be a high participation activity compared to other sports, is a significant contributor to jobs and the economy, has a huge number of lapsed and social players who own golf equipment, and – given some changes to current rules and traditions – has the potential to grow in many areas. Below these headline issues is a mass of detail which often obscures key facts. For example, there is the influence of weather. In 2012, the United States had a great year for golf, thanks to an average of 288 playable days across the country. That dropped to 268 in 2013, producing one of the worst years in the last seven despite a wealth of initiatives from the Professional Golfers’ Association of America and the United States Golf Association to help grow the game. We don’t keep corresponding statistics for New Zealand, but it’s easy to see how golf (and a bunch of other activities) drops off the radar when the weather is bad. A recent survey in the United Kingdom put ``better
weather” near the top of the list of factors that would encourage people to play more golf, alongside affordability, time, and improved skill levels. We may not be able to do much about the weather, although perhaps one day some golf entrepreneur will open an indoor short game facility here, complete with simulators enabling you and some mates to play Augusta, Pinehurst No 2, Royal Liverpool etc in less than two hours on a wet afternoon. The real numbers that shine through for me are firstly the ``churn” – the number of people leaving golf clubs or the game itself each year, and allied to this, the numbers of occasional or former golfers sitting on the fringes with golf gear in the garage. No business would tolerate losing 10 percent of its customers each year, and it would certainly be targeting former clients as part of its efforts to thrive and grow. This is even more so, given the research telling us why they have left, most of it available for free. Better yet, the improvements required cost virtually nothing other than a change of attitude. These involve less rules (why prohibit smart phones at the golf club in this day and age?), a more relaxed dress code, access to affordable golf lessons, convenient tee times and the opportunity to play more often with friends and family. Nothing new here, but how many New Zealand clubs can tick each of these boxes? For me, the last point is a key and is partly addressed by New
Zealand Golf’s commendable “Love Golf” promotion. However, the first step is to get people back on the golf course, so if every golf club member in New Zealand invited four friends or family members in the “lapsed” golf category each year to play at their club, collectively that would have a massive impact on the problem. That’s not to say efforts should stop to bring in those completely new to golf, through other promotions such as SNAG, FootGolf or even online games as a stepping stone. We just need to ensure that when they do try the ‘real’ game they don’t run into the barriers that have driven away so many in recent years. That doesn’t mean reinventing golf, just taking notice of what the research is telling us when the detail is stripped away. In the end, the best solutions are the simple ones.
Below these headline issues is a mass of detail which often obscures key facts....

GOLF EVENT
Nelson Festival of Golf, 2014
C
onsidering playing in a multiround tournament this year? ... then this is the one for you to enter. At last year’s inaugural event, it was dubbed the “friendly tournament” as everyone involved, players and organisers, had such a great time! The tournament is staged at Nelson, Greenacres and Motueka Golf Courses with two days to be played on the highly regarded Nelson Golf Course which hosted the 2014 New Zealand Amateur Championships in April this year, and received great reviews from the top players in the country and Nelson will also host the 2015 Seniors Championships in February. The courses are all very different, giving the players a real challenge for the week. Nelson being a true links course, whereas Motueka is a mature parkland course, with Greenacres offering a mix of challenging waterfront and parkland holes. Tournament dates for 2014 Nelson Festival of Golf are Monday 20 - Friday 24 October with a rest day on the Wednesday to allow competitors to put their feet up, get out and about to visit the many attractions the region has to offer or get some practice for the next two days of golf. The tournament dates again coincide with the Nelson Arts Festival - a great bonus for non playing partners to enjoy when making the trip
to Nelson. Non playing partners are also very welcome to join us for the major prize giving dinner on the Friday evening. The organising committee has decided to keep the number of entries to 128, the same as last year. This created both a competitive yet friendly environment for all the participants. By the end of the week players had played with and made new friends with golfers from all over New Zealand. Tournament Director, Derek Drysdale, said, “at the final prize giving it was really pleasing to hear many of the competitors saying how much they’d enjoyed their week, as we tried to create a tournament that mixed both great golf and great fun, and it seems we did just that! “We are delighted that we have had many of last year’s entrants already registered to enter the tournament again this year,” Derek said. “So if you are keen to enjoy a week of golf in October in the stunning Nelson region, now is the time to register to confirm your place.” Entry forms and full details are available on our website www.nelsongolf.co.nz/festivalofgolf or call us on 03-548-5029 for more information. Sponsorship has been secured from, Waimea Family Estate Wines, Taylor Made Golf, 4 Seasons Home & Leisure and Total Golf and as always the event organisers ask that all competitors support our sponsors
whenever possible. Without the support of such sponsors, we would not be able to offer such wonderful prizes. For instance this year the hole-in-one prizes are still being finalised, but we will be offering a wonderful hot tub spa pool from 4 Seasons Home & Leisure and $5k of golf equipment from Total Golf for all competitors to win for that magic shot, an “Ace in the Hole”. f you’re are standing in famous Hastings Street at Noosa, you are only 10 minutes east from the beautiful Tewantin Noosa Golf Club. The championship course has been around for 77 years and it is in the best condition it has ever been. Over the years, Tewantin Noosa has hosted its fair share of big events including the Jack Newton Classic. The club has continued this tradition by continuing to host Pro Am (Legends) events. More than 50,000 rounds are played by the members and a further 15,000 rounds by visitors. Tewantin Noosa is popular with locals and visitors because it is an easy walking and forgiving course, scratch rated for men 72 and ladies 74 with a slope of 126. The fairways are wide with a 1st cut then maintained rough so not too many golf balls are lost. Still, the course is no pushover and can challenge golfers of all levels. GOLF TRAILS NORTHLAND
NEUMANN, KINGI PREVAIL AT UNDER 23 JUNIOR CLASSIC Sherwood Park played host to the 2014 Northland Under 23 Junior Classic on Tuesday 8 July. Originally scheduled for 54 holes, weather conditions deteriorated quickly and forced organisers to reduce the event to a single 18 hole round. Tough conditions from the start of play led to two Northland senior representatives with a history of success at the event stand up to the test best, former winners in Lee Neumann (Northland) and Brooke Kingi (Whangaroa) claiming the major titles. In the girls division Kingi did not have it all her own way, Jodi Macalister (Northern Wairoa) was tied for the lead heading into the final stretch of holes before falling one shot short as the rain set in. For Kingi the successful defence of the title she claimed for the first time in 2013 will no doubt give her confidence as she looks to build into the second half of the year with a number of major club and representative fixtures to come. For the boys there was no chance of a back to back winner, 2013 champion Kadin Neho (Whangarei) away attending a New Zealand Golf Camp. Like the girls it turned into a two horse race between
Neumann and Braden Keown (Waipu) who earlier in the year claimed the Northland Under 21 title. Unfortunately for Keown, costly mistakes at the final two holes proved decisive and Neumann was able to claim his second Northland Under 23 title having previously won in 2010. In the boys second division, Nicolas Matijasevich (Remuera) prevailed by two strokes from Matt Pene (Northland) with a further two strokes back to Jamie Thomas (Wellsford) in third place. The mixed competition was won by Hamish Manderson (Northland) who beat Tarrin Rous (Mangawhai) by just a single stableford point. In the Kiwi Course competition Kendall Wyatt-Logan (Whangaroa) took the best gross and Ethan Leslie (Whangaroa) the best stableford. At the prize giving Wiremu Neho (Eagles) announced the selection of two boys and one girl to represent Northland at the annual Eagles Boys and Girls Under 17 Championship later in the year. The players selected are Michael Walker (Waitangi), Bradley Foster (Whangaroa) and Taylor Wyatt-Logan (Whangaroa).

JUNIORS GIVE US A SEASON TO BE PROUD OF The 2014 season has just ended and the Mangawhai Junior Pennant team finished in a very meritorious 4th place. We can be very proud of our boys and girl. They gave 100% for our club and to make it to the playoffs was an exceptional result. The Mangawhai team comprised Tarrin Rous and Jack Oldfield (playing off White tees) and Pacey Laing-Smith and Zac Beauchamp, with reserves Ruby Ewing and Hayden Wharfe, playing from the Kiwi tees. This was the first pennants season
for these youngsters and they did superbly against tough competition from clubs throughout Northland. Overall, the talent taking part in pennants and other Junior competitions was of a very high level and provided engrossing and highly enjoyable viewing for the parents and supporters who followed teams through the season. The team would like to offer special thanks to Michael McDonald for his efforts in getting the pennants competition up and running, and also recognise the contributions of team managers, clubs and parents. It’s made for a very enjoyable year, lots of fun mixed with strong competition and a very posiitve learning curve for all. Alongside the pennants season has been a very well organised Northland Junior Golf Academy, comprising events and training days. The events at Kerikeri and Whangaroa, along with the 54-holer at Northern Wairoa, were standouts -great courses, amazing competition and fantastic people. At the recent Academy day, the youngsters were treated to a half-day of intensive coaching from the Institute of Golf’s Craig Dixon – a real eye-opener for everyone.

GOLF TRAILS day one over the weekend, Whangarei’s Kadin Neho – the 2013 champion – got his title defence off to the best possible start with an opening round three under par 69 that earned him an early two-stroke lead. As the winds picked up for the afternoons second round former New Zealand representative Sam An made his move to the top of the leader board, a superb seven-under-par 65 seeing him surpass Neho to take a threeshot lead going in to Sunday’s third and final round. Sunday dawned a perfect day, clear skies with no wind. Early bogies from Neho widened the gap, one that would not be closed as An was clinical in closing out the tournament. An went on to card a second sub-par round, this time a five-under 67 and with it a comfortable nine-shot win. The women’s competition featured a dramatic finish where Waipu’s Kylie Jacoby came unstuck with a double bogey at the final hole with Dryland making par – the two-shot swing left the two tied atop the leaderboard on 236. A sudden death play-off followed which Dryland won. The weekend’s event also featured as the final trial before the naming of the Northland teams which played North Harbour in the Great Northern Bat-
tle at Mangawhai Golf Club. Despite the locals missing out on the major prizes Northland Golf development manager Michael Macdonald was pleased with the contingent. “If you look back to where we were 12 months ago, we had Kadin win but nobody else inside the top 15,” he said. “This year we have five guys in the top 10.” The match against North Harbour the following weekend featured 5 Waipu players in the Senior teams in playing order: Northland Open Men: Kadin Neho (Whangarei), Alex Neely (Bay of Islands Kerikeri), Chase McKeown (Waipu), Sheldon Kearns (Waipu), Luke Brown (The Pines), Brad Bonnington (Wellsford), Lee Neumann (Northland), Braden Keown (Waipu), Lee Newman (Mangawhai), Michael Macdonald (Northland). Northland Senior Women: Brooke Kingi (Whangaroa), Jodi Macalister (Northern Wairoa), Sam Dangen (Whangaroa), Kylie Jacoby (Waipu), Sjanna Bonnington (Wellsford), Daniele Lowe (Wellsford), Alyana Cox (Wellsford), Jo Taylor (Waipu). Special thanks to our sponsors; Northpine, Pak ‘n Save, Waipu Medical Centre, Ruakaka Tavern, Fresha valley, Kauri Cliffs Golf & Bream Bay Motel.

Women: A Pennants – Waitemata; B Pennants – Pupuke; Midweek Pennants – Waitemata; Weekend Pennants – Peninsula; 9 Hole Pennants – Pupuke While all the major pennant competitions are complete for the year there is still some more competitions to be played. 2014 CEO Pennant Trophy The Muriwai Golf Club’s top Pennant Team has won the CEO Pennant Challenge trophy for the second year in a row. The team competed over the season in North Harbour Golf’s top pennant competition, the Nobilo Trophy and were narrow runner-up finishers to the North Shore Golf Club. However at the Lochiel Golf Club in Hamilton on the 22nd of June the Muriwai team were too strong for the 6 other clubs involved in the competition. The CEO Trophy is an event that was started by the four district executive officers (North Harbour, Auckland, Waikato and Bay of Plenty) for the top two pennants sides of each district to come together for a battle of supremacy. This mean North Shore and Muriwai both attended the event but in this instance it was Muriwai who stamped their superiority on the day. The event comprises of foursomes gross stableford in the morning and singles gross stableford in the afternoon. With total points for the day of 408 the Muriwai team won by 9 points from Auckland’s top pennant side ‘Remuera. Muriwai’s top scores were North Harbour interprovincial player Ryan Leslie and former representative James Colligan who shot 67’s for 41 points. Not far behind was young star Tadhg Campbell who shot a 68 for 40 points. Congratulations to the Muriwai team for winning the event for the second year in row.
The First Tee NZ The “North Harbour Golf Association” and “The First Tee New Zealand” have signed a Memorandum of Understanding. Both organisations have agreed to the principle of working closely together for the benefit of the game in the North Harbour District. Both organisations have a huge range of experience, resources and contacts in the industry and by working together feel there can be greater added value and efficiency in the development and grass roots of the game to kids in North Harbour. More details will be released shortly.
June Friday ‘World Travellers Open’ The very popular mid winter Friday Open was played at Warkworth Golf Club, and for third year running was a great success. STUDIO OPENS TO GOLFERS By: Daniel Silverton/Howick & Pakuranga Times
THE newly-constructed indoor coaching facility at Pakuranga Golf Club is finished in time for players to work on their game out of the winter weather. The performance studio, which was officially opened last Thursday, will allow Pakuranga Golf and club professional Sam Thomas to offer coaching regardless of the conditions or time of day. Within the double-garage sized building are areas for swing analysis, a putting laboratory and a fitting bay with clubs from wall to wall for all sizes and ability. The project was partly-funded by the Howick Local Board to the tune of $60,456 as part of Auckland Council’s facility partnership scheme. Pakuranga Golf chipped in $25,000, and Thomas spent nearly $50,000 kitting it out with the latest technology. Players’ tee and iron shots are captured on high frame rate camera and analysed with Swing Catalyst software. A launch monitor with three-dimensionGOLFER PACIFIC August 2014 23

GOLF TRAILS al Doppler radar, coupled with the Flightscope programme, provide instant imagery of the ball’s path and other data to help Thomas suggest where improvements can be made. “There wouldn’t be anywhere like this in New Zealand,” says Thomas. “A club might have Swing Catalyst, but they won’t have the SAM (Science and Motion) putting laboratory or a fitting facility. We have it all in the one studio so it’s pretty neat. Without this technology, you can teach but you can’t teach fully.” Thomas has been putting the equipment through its paces for a month before the ribbon was cut last week, which has been a blessing during the wet season. “When it rained in the past, I would have had to push back all my lessons and be chasing my tail for the next week. And also people just wouldn’t book in. “I don’t have to worry about the weather anymore.” Pakuranga Golf Club general manager Des Topp says the project aims to get more and younger people into golf. “We saw it as an extension of the work we’re doing in local schools using the SNAG programme to introduce a large number of children into golf.” SNAG (Starting New At Golf) is a coaching system which uses plastic clubs, tennis balls and velcro targets. Pupils can progress from SNAG to the club’s peewee (five- to nine-year-olds) or junior (1018) memberships, which includes coaching that can utilise the performance studio. “One of the criteria from the council was that it had to be community-focused, so it’s not just

for club members,” says Topp. The benefits of the facility are likened to those of an artificial turf for ball sports – with increased availability of coaching, results are improved which enhances enjoyment and keeps players involved longer. “It’s making best use of the technology that we have. In the past, it couldn’t be used in the wet and had to be carted to the practise area, and set up and packed down for each session,” says Topp. “Now it’s under cover and potentially available 24/7.” The opening was attended by Howick ward councillor Dick Quax and the local board’s sport and recreation portfolio leader John Spiller.
Golf to be a Sport option at World Masters Games Athletes from around the world can now start planning their travel and training schedules for World Masters Games 2017. 28 sports and 45 disciplines have been confirmed into the sporting programme. Eight sports offer a para class. The Golf age criteria is 35 years and over. A feature of the 28 sports is the inclusion of uniquely Pacific sports or disciplines such as waka ama within the sport of canoe/kayak and Weta class sailing within the sport of sailing which will give the international event a distinctly kiwi feel. World Masters Games 2017 Chief Executive Jennah Wootten said 16 sports within the programme are core and must be staged but the remaining optional sports offer an opportunity for the host city to bring something new to the table. “Naturally we’ve woven in sports that are important to New Zealand’s sporting culture – such as rugby, netball and touch – as well as a range of sports that will showcase our stunning beaches, harbours, lakes and waterfront, all of which are a key part of Auckland’s world-class reputation as a beautiful harbour city.” Ms Wootten added that sports such as orienteering and mountain biking will take visitors into some of the region’s beautiful forests and native bush. Ms Wootten also announced a further four ambassadors have agreed to join the inaugural five – Hamish Carter, Anthony Mosse, Jenny-May Coffin, Garth Barfoot and Susie Simcock – announced as part of the ‘three years to go’ milestone event on 30 April. The expanded legendary line-up features former All Black Bryan Williams, athletics’ Allison Roe, surf lifesaver Cory Hutchings and football international, Noah Hickey. “We are extremely fortunate to have such an

amazing groups of masters’ sports advocates join our ambassadors team to help us tell the World Masters Games 2017 story here and overseas,” said Ms Wootten. The announcement of the sports codes and disciplines is a major milestone in World Masters Games 2017 planning and delivery. “We have worked very closely with sports organisations of New Zealand throughout what has been an extremely robust process,” said Ms Wootten. “I would like to thank them for the way in which they have worked with World Masters Games 2017. We know the contracted sports will form the backbone of a programme that ensures we stage the best Games ever and features all that is great about Auckland and New Zealand.” Peter Miskimmin, Chief Executive of Sport NZ, said the sports selected provide many options for masters athletes, no matter what age or capability, and truly bring to life the ‘sport for all’ ethos. “We expect masters athletes from around the world will enjoy the chance to try some new sports along with the old favourites,” said Mr Miskimmin. “We will work closely with each of the sports organisations selected and with World Masters Games 2017 to ensure the development of individual sports programmes and their delivery meets the highest standards.” Core sports are archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, canoe/kayak, cycling, football, hockey, orienteering, rowing, shooting, softball, squash, table tennis, triathlon and weightlifting. The 12 optional sports are baseball, golf, lawn bowls, netball, sailing, rugby, surf lifesaving, swimming, tennis, touch, volleyball and water polo. As is customary, two sports – weightlifting and orienteering – will hold their annual World Masters Championships at World Masters Games 2017. The eight para sports are archery, athletics, canoe/kayak, rowing, table tennis, tennis, lawn bowls and swimming. With the critical sports selection process complete, Ms Wootten said the planning team will now turn its attention to the evaluation and selection of the more than 45 venues required to deliver World Masters Games 2017. “We expect to announce the venues, including those for the opening and closing ceremonies, before the end of the year.” For more information visit www. worldmastersgames2017.co.nz

the country were in the field. After the first round Momoki Korobi from Christchurch and Brydie Hodge from Levin were leading the way with a splendid round of 69 (three under par) but unfortunately they were not so hot in the afternoon and finished third. Chantelle Cassidy (Cambridge) and Jocelyn Katu (Aviation) with rounds of 75 and 73 told the gold medals with Tyla Kingi (Opotiki) and Brooke Hamilton (Hamilton) winning the silver medal. New Zealand Board Member Eileen Bateup (who also played) congratulated Matamata on hosting an excellent event and presented the medals to the top three place-getters. Matamata’s best placed finishers in the foursomes were Pam Wright and Sheelah Lamb who were 3rd net, followed by Dayna Morrow-Wilson and Arlene Joe 6th Net. The winners of the net were Denise Hunt (Putaruru) and Julie Turner from Horsham Downs. On Saturday and Sunday the Ruth Middleton Memorial Tournament with 90 in the field got off to a wet start but ended on Sunday in superb conditions. After the first two rounds top seed Chantelle Cassidy with scores of 70 and 74 and Zoe Brake (Whakatane) with scores of 76 and 68 were tied for the lead. Third was Celyn Khoo (Pakuranga). These three fought out the final round on Sunday with Chantelle scoring 74 to take the Ruth Middleton Cup, followed by Celyn Khoo, 75, 73 and 72 second and Zoe Brake 76, 68, 77 third. Matamata’s 15 year-old Dayna MorrowWilson had a fantastic weekend winning the Burke Salver for the best net. Dayna’s
net scores of 77, 70, 70 (handicap 11) were outstanding in these tough conditions. Along with the golf Matamata hosted a number of past winners and a number of local officials, past and present, to celebrate the 40th playing of the Ruth Middleton event. The large number of people in the clubhouse enjoyed hearing Daph Brooks reminiscence about how the tournament came about and why it has stood the test of time over 40 years. Two of the earliest winners Cherry Kingham and Jocelyn Cooper who had travelled some distance cut the 40th anniversary cake. Pictured are Chantelle Cassidy and Dayna Morrow Wilson (Gross and Net Winners).

Annual BOP Eagles COMP A good field made for a very interesting Canadian Foursomes competition as part of the annual 2014 Bay of Plenty Eagles Society visit to Mount Maunganui Golf Club on Sunday, July 20. A generous donation was made, by the “Eagles”, specifically for the Junior Golfing section of the club. The Club is indebted to
the Eagles for their continued support of Junior Golf and including the club in its annual programme of golfing visits. Competition was again very keen showing the benefits of the earlier two weeks of Canadian Foursomes of Club competition. A BOP Eagle, Ken Davis with a new playing partner, Shirley Bates, featured with a leading score of Net 64,while another 12 pairs returned Net 72 or better. Ken and Lila Davis had, in the 2 weeks prior, won the 2 Round Steele Cup (also Canadian Foursomes) with equally low net scores.
Results:Ken Davis & Shirley Bates 64; Paul Dewdney & Claire Davison 64.5; John Uden & Sandy Long 65; Roman & Helen Tomson 65; Ray Horsfall & Pam Adlam 67; Tom Uden & June Bentley 68.5; Rex & Sharon Ferris 68.5; Ross Newnham & Kay Pearce 68.5; Brian & Dianne Jopson 69.5; Royston & Sue Scholes 70; Barry Rowan & Margo Grenville 70.5; Barry & Judy Fordyce 71; Ian & Noreen Nicholls 71; Geoff & Rae Carr 71; Ken & Fran Meikleham 72.5
STEELE CUP” “CANADIAN FOURSOMES” The final Round of the 2 round Mixed Canadian Foursomes competition for the Steele Cup was held on Sunday 13th July 2014 and saw some excellent net scores that provided for an ‘cliff hanger’ finish at the Mount Maunganui Golf Club.

GOLF TRAILS On a sunny Afternoon (amazing) a very good field of 23 pairs contested the final round, including additional pairs for the day competition and other who replaced players who were indisposed. Great to again welcome some new players to Sunday Mixed Golf for another golfing experience. Like Round 1, scoring matched the course and weather conditions with 10 pairs returning a 72 or better net score. Round one leaders, Neville & Sharon Cockayne (65), set a hot pace with a 2nd round net of 69 and a total of 134. BUT, out of the blue two pairs decided to challenge this lead. John & Gloria Nottingham scored an excellent 63.5 net to add to their 1st round of 68.5 and a total of 132 and looked to have the trophy in the bag, The winners were Ken & Lila Davis who scored a 64.5 to follow their 66.5 a week earlier, giving Ken & Lila a total of 132 to win the Steele Cup by 1 shot. Unfortunate for the defending Steel Cup holders, Sandra Winhoven & Shane Ward, for the past 2 years, finished with 144 for 6th place. The Steele Cup and its Canadian Foursomes format proving to be appropriate and enjoyable following the inclement weather of past weeks and the soft fairways. Enjoyable post golf social time aided by the assistance of Christine Buckley and John Uden (Raffle).

TARANAKI
CANADIAN FOURSOMES Kaitake Golf Club held an Open Mixed Canadian foursomes during Queens Birthday weekend. While this competition had not been played for 4 years, this year 36 pairs enjoyed a lovely day on the course. Lynn and Frank Regan won the day. We are looking forward to repeating it again next year and will be promoting it widely.
Weekend Women Janice Farrant won the final of the Ladies Trophy with Pauline Gray runner-up at the Kaitake Golf Club recently. The 1st Round of the Nell Dickie was won by Diane Jones with 34 stableford points. The final day of Taranaki Weekend Womens Pennant competition was held at Ngamotu. What a perfect day we had in superb weather. Kaitake beat Inglewood with 3 wins and 2 halves. However, Inglewood where the overall winners for the year with Westown and Taranaki Junior girls 2nd equal. Vivian Pharmacy continue to sponsor the Kaitake Weekend Women providing them with new shirts. This is a generous sponsorship and we thank Catherine Keenan for her ongoing support.

Senior Invitational Matchplay Challenge The Taranaki Golf Centre Pumas won this year’s Senior Invitational Match Play Pennant with a 4-2 victory over the Revital Fertiliser Coasters at New Plymouth Golf Club played mid July. In a closely fought contest that was a reversal of an earlier dress rehearsal in the final round of sectional play. With the Coaster’s No2 Damon Powell unavailable, Fitzroy’s Brian Rowland was called in as a late replacement. Rowland achieved a very creditable half against teenager Fletcher Broderick who was playing on his home course. Coaster’s No6 Euan Ritchie also achieved a square against the experienced Pumas, Captain Robbie Sim. However it was the results at 3 through 5 that proved to be the undoing of the Coasters. The Pumas Trio of Daniel Lundt, Michael Sharp and Dean Baldock all proved too strong for their opponents. Baldock beat John Newland 2/1, Sharp, Jarron Pittams 5/3 and Lundt squeezing past Travis Stewart 1up, to give the Pumas successive victories in the Finals. The Coasters’ No1 James Malone secured a 2/1 victory against Zach Lewis, but by this time the final had already been decided. Daniel Lundt’s 1up victory ensured he kept his 100% record for the season, a very notable achievement that Daniel should feel suitably proud of. In the other matches for the minor placing’s, Vanburwray Vipers beat the Taranaki Hardcore Rebels 4-2 to secure 3rd Place. The Viper’s No1 Kerry Otene matched Daniel Lundt’s achievement of a perfect 6 from 6 in helping ensure the team’s victory. The battle to avoid the wooden spoon was a very one sided affair. The Pita Pit Pirates ran out 6-0 winners over the Jennian Homes Hornets.
Entries are now open for the Kapi Tareha Memorial at Napier Golf Club. The New Zealand order of merit tournament will be a 72 hole event for men and women. Contact the club on 06 8447913 for more information and to enter.

FEILDING GOLF CLUB CELEBRATE FIRST EVER SUCCESS IN PRESIDENTS TROPHY COMPETITION By Tony Boxall The Feilding Golf Club’s Presidents Trophy team recently won the Manawatu Wanganui pennant for the first time since the competition started in 1987. The final was played against a team from Marton Golf Club on the 22nd June at the Rangitikei Golf Club course at Bulls. The Feilding team captain Bill Riordan commented that the course was in excellent order with the greens running quite fast. In a very tense battle 5 of the 8 matches were decided on the 18th green, all of which Feilding won to complete a 7.5 to 2.5 margin of victory. Bill thanked all 12 players who contributed during the season with special mention of Kevin Pawson who appeared in every round and won all but one of his matches. The team for the final was Trevor Ward, Trevor Bain, Matt Leamy, Kevin Small, Alan Deihl, Ian Harvey, Bill and Kevin. Those who played in earlier rounds were Steve Lochhead, Ross Pratt, Mike Touhy and Cliff Lally. Feilding Golf Club Men’s Club Captain Wayne White when announcing the teams achievement at the clubrooms the following Saturday said it was a very pleasing result for the Club and topped off a good season for their representative teams with A Grade placing 3rd, B Grade 7th, and Palmanui 2nd having only gone down 5-4 to

Match Results (Marton names first):-
Marton Golf Club will remain in A grade for the 2015 mens pennant season after a comfortable win over B Grade runners-up Castlecliff. This match eventuated after Manawatu B won the B Grade, but under the current rules cannot have two teams in the same grade. Therefore the second placed B Grade team was able to challenge the bootom placed A Grade team. Unfortunately for Castlecliff they missed out on automatic promotion to A Grade by just 1 individual game after the B Grade round robin. TASMAN
ANCOR LOC BEAT THE PROS The 3rd round of the Ancor Loc Beat the Pro’s was played on June 28th at Nelson Golf Club. It was a true test of golf on the Links at nelson with strong SW winds making scoring tough and the temperature rather chilly!! The Pro’s played solid golf in the conditions to score a Gross score of 64 in the 2 man ambrose format and were only beaten by 1 pair Sean Eggers and James Tuhakaraina who had a nett score of 63. the best gross score of the day was recorded by Dave Riordan and Nick Loach (pictured) who had a 62 but with both being on + Handicaps their nett score was 64.5 – hard luck fellas!! with 2 more rounds left to play Dave Riordan and Nick Loack lead both the Nett and Gross competitions with the winners of both earning a trip the this years Kaikoura Pro Am.
NELSON DEFENDS TITLE Well, it was the last round of Tasman Cup
and the Junior Order of Merit. And what a day it turned out to be. Teeing off in perfect conditions at Totaradale there was no excuse for playing bad golf. A few tricky pin positions did have some players scratching their heads. Nelson had a slender 11 shot lead over Greenacres for the Tasman Cup and there were at least five players in the running for the Junior OOM. A moment of inattention meant that four players teed off on a wrong tee on this 9 hole course and unfortunately did not return to the correct tee before starting the next hole. All four were disqualified. One was a member of the Nelson team leading the Tasman Cup, a second was in the Nelson Masters team and two juniors were in the running for the Junior OOM. A second group teed off the same wrong tee but realised this in time and each took the two shot penalty and completed play. One of these was David Riordan who still shot a creditable one over 73, winning the gross and extending his lead over Nick Loach who could only manage a 78 on the day. Tied for second in the gross with 76 were Tom Dasler, Samson Kim and the ever consistent Craig Newman. Craig will certainly be right at the top of the Tasman selectors list for the Masters Interprovincial team later in the year. Dave Riordan now has a 60 point lead in the Total Golf Order of Merit and with only two rounds left he will be very hard to beat. Tom Dasler, Blair Riordan and Andrew Drummond fill the next three places. The Junior OOM was a very tight affair with Oliver Merritt picking up 9.5 points to win this from a fast finishing Mat Grimes. Mat recently beat many senior players to win the Captains Trophy last weekend at the Nelson Golf Club so is in hot form right now. Oliver wins a $100 and Mat a $50 voucher from Total Golf. The winner of the gross on the day was Connor Winter with 80 and the net was won by Kameron Clarke. This means that Oliver Merrit and Mat Grimes are automatic selections in the first Nelson Junior representative team this season. Congratulations boys. The Tasman Cup for interclub golf was won by the Nelson Golf Club, 27 shots ahead of Greenacres and Nelson Masters a distant third. A further competition was held behind the scenes for the senior golfers. The low-

Even after a two shot penalty David won this by one shot and a $50 voucher from Total Golf. Now the Tasman Cup is over for 2014, attention is changed to the final two rounds of the Total Golf Order of Merit which are the Tasman Strokeplay at Westport on 16/17 August and the Total Golf Open at Nelson and Motueka on 30/31 August.
CANTERBURY
ELLESMERE GOLF It was a Lincoln v Rangiora day in both the Ashby Bergh and McGuire Hendon trophies at Ellesmere on July 20th. The course was a little heavy under foot with the recent large rain falls, with a clean and place rule in place for the entire course, which was a god send with the large amounts of mud on the ball after every shot. In the Ashy Bergh Trophy, the winners of the Patterson Cup (Lincoln B) were playing the winners of the Templeton Cup (Rangiora B). With 2 matches still out, Rangiora B held a slight advantage 3.5 to 2.5, as the numbers 1’s & 2’s come around the bend

GOLF TRAILS on the 18th, all 12 of their teammates had gathered around the 18th green awaiting the results. When Rangiora captain Paul Neilson let his teammates know he had won his match there was a loud cheer and lots of congratulatory handshakes from both sides showing the great spirit the match was played in. Craig Castle (Lincoln B) fought his match out to the end with a great birdie on the 18th to halve his match to leave the final score Rangiora B 5 – Lincoln B 3. In the McGuire Hendon Trophy, the runners up of both competitions Lincoln A were playing Rangiora D, in reading the result with Lincoln A winning 7.5 to Rangiora D 0.5 you might think that it was a very one sided affair. This was not the case with 6 of the 8 matches being very close, 1 half, 2 winning by 1 hole and 3 winning 2 & 1. On any given day the result could very well have been turned around. The only bright spot for the Rangiora D team was the debut performance of young 12 year old Kazuma Kobori, making his senior debut for the club and playing off 12 and giving 2 shots to his much older opponent he fought his match out to get a half.
Eagles U17 Strokeplay Canterbury Eagles hosted their U17 school holiday tournament at Waimairi Beach on Monday 14 July. 40 juniors took advantage of the FREE entry, FREE lunch and FANTASTIC prizes in this annual event where the Eagles select their Canterbury team of 2 boys and 1 girl from the top finishers, who then get to enjoy an all expenses paid trip to the National Final in Levin from 29 September to 1 October. It was fitting that Dominic Brettkelly (Hororata), who recently won the Eagles Most Promising Junior Award at the Canterbury Golf Annual Awards, won the day with a 72. Runner-up was Hiroki Miya (Russley) with 74.
Canterbury JuniorS The Canterbury Junior Tournament was held today at Bottle Lake Golf Club in cool windy conditions. A field of 52 juniors played in the school holiday tournament. Conditions were difficult not only with the wind but also the soft course conditions making it challenging for all players. The best score of the day was Henry Bryden (Russley) with a 2 over par 72 following closely by Dominic Brettkelly (Hororata) on 73, Hiroki Miya (Russley) had the best stableford on 35 points. In Grade 2 Seb May (Russley) won with 41 stablefords and Hayden Neil (Bottle Lake) was runner up with 39 stablefords. Amelia Garvey won the Girls division with 82 and Maddie May won the Stableford with 32 points.

Canterbury 4BBB The Men’s Championship title at the 2014 Riccarton Park Golf Complex Canterbury 4BBB Championship was shared by the pairings of Michael McAuley & Steven Heyes, and Jarrod Satherley and Paul Gebbie. With a steady southerly making for cold playing conditions, both pairs shot three under 69’s in the best-ball format. One shot behind were the Timaru pairing of Garth Simpson and Tim Leonard. The capacity field of 96 were greeted with fine sunny conditions to begin the round, but the southerly steadily built through the day and the sky clouded over. Although the conditions were good by winter standards, the Shirley Links were playing to their toughest, particularly for the men off the Blue Tees. Many players hit driver and three wood on a couple of the long par fours and could not reach the green. Players found the subtle breaking greens tough to read and not many putts were holed. Most pairing’s rounds were made or broken on their ability to cope with the greens. As expected the women’s title was won
by Elisha Crosbie and Catherine Bell with a six under 68. They beat Canterbury Masters Reps Rhonda Hira and Anne Dick who had 70. Hira and Dick were the best performed pair on the day and also netted 64. The Men’s Div 1 Nett was won by young up-and-comers Tom Parker and Dominic Brettkelly with 67. The round included a spectacular bunker hole-out for birdie by Dominic on the 18th hole in front of an appreciative gallery. Connell Kilpatrick and Henry Bryden were second with 68, then James Robb and Tom Wilson with 69. The Women’s Net was won by Ashburton visitors Pauline Bell and Jenny Senior with 66. They beat Kate Shier & Margaret-Mary Coughlan, and Kim Moggach & Helen Macaskill who had 68’s. Men’s Div 2 Net was won by Sponsor Invites Tony Thomas and Mike Worley with 67. They beat Andrew Sweetman & Tom Harding-Ilott, and Adam Vining and Connor McFadzien who had 68’s.

Carmen’s 5th Hole in 1 Who says No.13 is unlucky? On Saturday 28th June, Akaroa member Carmen McCormick, achieved her 5th Hole-in-One all of which she has had on No.13. The first was in 1994, followed by 1998, 2001, 2010 and now 2014. The No.13 hole at Akaroa, aptly named ‘Stumpy’, is a short 84m gnarly hole across a creek which seems to get wider and closer to the green every winter.
Dual win for Bottle Lake On Sunday 6th July the Richards Trophy & Cresswell Cup were played for at a well presented Kaiapoi Golf Course. The Richard’s Trophy was contested between Bottle Lake and Rangiora B with Bottle Lake emerging the winner by 5 games to 3.
