The golf course – it’s a nice play to be G olf’s greatest attraction is its image. The game’s administrators around the world may pay marketers tens of thousands dollars to promote the sport but much of the attraction occurs naturally. Think about it. Golf is played in great surroundings. There is little greater relaxation than walking down the middle of a closely mown fairway, perhaps lined with majestic trees, the sun warming your back and a pristine green ahead. Many courses have a stream meandering its way through them, ponds neighbouring greens or a river in close proximity to make for very pleasant sights. Wildlife often shares the fairways with you. Those scenarios probably apply to every golf course in the world. Think about your own golf course. I don’t care how ordinary the course may be, it remains a nice place to be.
Then you have the world’s great golf courses. They are often situated in stunning locations. That could be beside the sea, it could be inland amongst rolling hills or 15 minutes from the city centre. Whatever the case you can guarantee it will be a nice place to be. I had this point rammed home to me last month when watching the Fiji International, a new tournament, on television. What a great setting. Some of the holes were bordered by the sea which was crystal blue in colour. Talk about inviting. It made you want to be there. Golf is not played on a bare rectangular field, it is not played on a court, it is not played in a big hall and it is not played on a track marked with lanes. And that’s golf’s attraction. Look at this magazine. On most pages there is an advertisement for a golf course which is often accompanied by picture of
pleasant surroundings. In addition you get to walk about 5-6km in a round of golf. It might be a pleasant walk spoiled by the quality of your game but at least it provides you with some exercise without the preparation that a marathon runner would require. I am heading to Australia next month to play in a tournament. To say I’m excited is an understatement. It’s more of a social occasion that anything else and for some inexplicable reason the tournament organisers have allowed the entries of some of my club colleagues. But despite their presence it’s another golf trip we all highly anticipate. The tournament is being held at Nelson Bay near Newcastle in New South Wales. Much of the attraction is that I have been told Nelson Bay is an idyllic spot. I can imagine it will be a very nice place to be.

Kadin Neho leads all the way in North Harbour Strokeplay K
adin Neho from Northland continued his recent resurgence of good form with an all-the-way victory at the North Harbour Strokeplay Championship. The former New Zealand Amateur champion continued his good record at the Muriwai Golf Links when he recorded a six shot win. Neho, who finished third at the Muriwai Open last year behind Michael Hendry and Richard Lee, cruised to victory in the final round after a stunning front nine holes of four-under par 32 when his nearest competitor, local favourite Tadhg Campbell, faded with a three-over par 39. It wasn’t always so comfortable as the Northland No 1 was tested throughout the four rounds. The first round on the Friday saw severe weather in the form of near gale force winds get the better of a majority of the competitors. It was a survival test with many shooting scores higher than they were accustomed to. Neho was the only player to break par with an impressive one-under 71, undoubtedly the round of the tournament given the horrendous southerly ripping through the area. Another round of 71 in testy conditions on Saturday allowed him to retain the lead, albeit by just one shot, when North Harbour’s top junior boy representative Campbell shot a superb 68. There were calmer conditions for the
final round on Sunday where 50 players made the cut. Neho and Campbell shot rounds of 70 in the morning’s third round to open a sizeable gap between them and the rest of the field. But Neho’s front nine in the afternoon clinched the title. The form would continue early into the back nine as he reached six under par after just 14 holes. Even a messy finish of bogey, double bogey, bogey could not stop his victory stroll. Neho’s final round of 70 was good enough for the six shot win and a four round total of six-under par, 282. Brad Hayward of New Plymouth (68) and Ryan Chisnall of Greenacres (69) had strong final rounds to finish tied for second on even par, 288. Chisnall, the South Island Strokeplay winner, started the tournament with an 80 in the wind but fought back gallantly for the rest of the tournament with three subpar rounds. Campbell finished alone in fourth after a disappointing final round 76. However the 17-year-old left-hander continues to have a breakthrough year with yet another solid performance. The Muriwai Links was yet again prepared in fantastic condition for the championship and has been a very popular venue of the tournament in recent years. It is one of the few genuine links courses in the country and when the wind blew on Friday, the players were given a lesson in links golf.

Beale becomes third Kiwi to win Canadian Amateur
C
anada continues to be a happy hunting ground for New Zealand golfers. Just last month James Beale, from Auckland, won the Canadian Amateur Championship in the Manitoba capital of Winnipeg. It was the third win by a Kiwi in the event following the successes of Stuart Jones, from Hawke’s Bay, in 1967 and Wellington’s Gareth Paddison in 2001. Canada was also the country where, in 1992, the New Zealand team of Michael Campbell, Grant Moorhead, Phil Tataurangi and Stephen Scahill won the Eisenhower Trophy, the world’s premier amateur team’s event for men. More recently Lydia Ko has also flown the New Zealand flag with great success. She won the Canadian Open, part of LPGA Tour, in both 2012 and 2013 while still an amateur. Beale, 21, did not accomplish his feat in the regulation 72 holes. He was tied with Taylor Pendrith, of Canada, and Jonathan Garrick, of the United States, at six-under par at the end of regulation play and the trio headed off for a playoff to find a winner. It wasn’t until the third extra hole that Beale came through for victory when he sunk a 22-foot birdie putt on the par four 18th hole at the Elmhurst Golf and Country Club. Beale said just before the winning putt he had a feeling it would break the deadlock. “Honestly, I don’t know if it’s good or bad, but the thought went through my mind just as I was standing over it, that this is for the win,” Beale said. “As I looked at the hole I just kind of stroked it and tapped it down there and it just tracked towards the hole and I couldn’t believe it.” Beale carded a final round one-under par 69 and holed a clutch par putt
on his 72nd hole to earn his spot in the three-way playoff. “It’s surreal, it’s definitely something I’ve dreamed about, I didn’t think it would happen so soon. “I’ve been working on my game hard and 2014 is the first year where I’ve really started to feel like I get everything out of my game.” Beale’s victory earns him exemption into next year’s Canadian Open, which is part of the PGA Tour. It will be played at the Glen Abbey Golf Club at Oakville in Ontario. “I wasn’t thinking about that stuff when I was out there but to get off and realise that I’m... in the Canadian Open, a PGA Tour event, it doesn’t get much better than that. I’ll have to reconsider turning pro next year so I can play in that one.”

Lydia Ko third in New York
S
he didn’t become the youngest to win a golf major but New Zealand’s Lydia Ko still banked the healthy sum of $US150,000 for her efforts in the LPGA Championship in New York. Ko finished third after scoring bogeys on the last two holes to be three shots behind joint leaders Inbee Park and Brittany Lincicome. Park, from South Korea, won the tournament on the first playoff hole. Ko’s prize for third took her earnings in her first season on the LPGA Tour to $US1.2 million which remains outstanding for a 17-year-old. But she admitted there was little delight in finishing third. “You know, obviously it didn’t really,’’ Ko said. “It was kind of a disappointing finishing with two bogeys, but overall I played pretty solid today, and I tried to give myself opportunities and made a
lot of good putts. “So yeah, I’m pretty happy with how the major has finished.” Needless to say, the confidence is high heading into the season’s final major when the LPGA Tour heads to the Evian Championship in France. “This gives me a lot of confidence. You know, majors are where we try and perform our best, and to have a top-five finish, I think that’s really good.” It was noted Ko wore a bandage on her left wrist during the tournament. It was subsequently reported by coach David Leadbetter that a cyst on Ko’s wrist had grown and she had been battling pain. Surgery has been recommended which would probably take place following the year’s fifth and final major, the Evian Championship in France from September 11-14.
Brilliant second round paves the way for victory in Bay Of Plenty Open
A
n outstanding second round five under par 65 gave North Shore golfer Jason Gulasekharam the cushion he needed to hold top spot at the Bay of Plenty Open. Gale force winds and rain on Sunday morning meant the event was reduced to 54 holes and despite a third round 77, Gulasekharam held on to win by one shot with an even par 210 total. Second was 15-year-old Te Puke rising star Harry Hillier. Local hope Henry Spring and former New Zealand Academy Player Tyler Hodge were a further stroke back in equal third. It was a battle for survival on Sunday morning with Hodge being the only player to have a par round. Meanwhile the women found the conditions particularly difficult and at the end of the third round Alanna Campbell and Zoe-Beth Brake were tied at 219 so headed back up the 18th for a sudden death playoff. This was repeated three times before a bogey by Brake allowed the 16-year-old Campbell to take the honours.

Golf was Bob Glading’s life B
ob Glading, the winner of two successive New Zealand Opens, died on August 19. He was aged 94. Glading won the first of his New Zealand Opens at the Manawatu Golf Club in 1946 as an amateur in a playoff, using persimmon wood clubs he had made himself. His prize was a set of cutlery, which he later wrapped in paper, before that night shouting himself a second-class ticket on the train home to Hamilton for work the next day. His first New Zealand Open win remained the highlight of his career in his mind. “I’d wake up in bed at night sometimes and think, ‘I’m the Open champion’,” he was once quoted as saying. Glading defended his New Zealand Open title at the New Plymouth Golf Club the following year but by this time he had turned professional. Glading first ignited his passion for golf when he was growing up in Lower Hutt. His father, who was a builder, gambled most of the family’s money away on horses. Glading quickly realised that one and sixpence could be earned as a caddy at the Hutt course and Bob was hooked. In 1932 he caddied at the New Zealand Open at Heretaunga in Wellington. The game at that time was mainly played by doctors, solicitors and other professional people. Glading later recounted how golf in New Zealand only became a sport “for the people’’ in the mid to late 1930s when it began to grow in popularity among all sections of the community before being interrupted by World War 2. The war also interrupted Glading’s golfing career and robbed him of his dreams of becoming a professional golfer in the United States. Glading was in the Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm during the war. He flew around 50 operations, in Norway and then the Pacific. He was subsequently awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (DSC) for his wartime service.
He later modestly recalled the reason he received the DSC was not because of any heroics but because he happened to survive. Glading said he believed at the time the war was a fight for freedom but in his later years wondered whether it was more about defending the interests of industrialists. Glading would go on to work as a golf journalist. He wrote a column for The Cut magazine called “That Reminds Me’’ into his 90s, was a commentator on television, and was on the board of the golfing charity, The First Tee of New Zealand. In 2004 he fulfilled a lifelong dream when he played 4-1/2 rounds over three days at Augusta National – the famed home of The Masters in the United States. In 2007 he was recognised in the New Year’s honours list for his services to golf with a New Zealand Order of Merit award. As a budding club professional Glading was 17 when he met 15-year-old Margaret at the St Andrews golf course in Hamilton. Margaret’s family were green keepers and caterers. Bob and Margaret corresponded through the war without being sure they would marry. They went on to have three children in a family where golf was a dominant theme. Michael Glading, his eldest son, was the tournament director of the NZPGA Championship at The Hills in 2012 – 2013 and is the current tournament director of the New Zealand Open. Glading’s friends included World Golf Hall of Fame members such as South Africans Gary Player and the late Bobby Locke, Australian Peter Thomson and Sir Bob Charles. New Zealand Golf chairman Paul Fyfe said Glading was one of the game’s great characters. “Bob was a legend in New Zealand golfing circles for the things that he achieved but more importantly the person that he was,” Fyfe said. “His love for the game was infectious and anywhere he went around New Zealand he was

warmly greeted. “Everyone loved Bob. He was always at our New Zealand Opens talking about the game he loved with anyone and everyone he came across. He will be sorely missed by our golf community and the many people’s lives he touched.’’ At the centenary celebrations of New Zealand Golf in 2010 Glading stole the show. Sir Bob Charles opened the occasion with a tee shot from the first hole at Heretaunga that went straight down the middle. The left-handed legend obliged by shooting a round of 69 on the testing layout, five under his age. But Charles was only second best on the day. The 90-year-old Glading completed his 18 holes in 80, which 10 under his age in what was a masterful display by the veteran. “That has to rank as one of my most enjoyable rounds of golf ever,” said Phil Aickin, New Zealand Golf’s Golf Manager, who played alongside Glading in the centenary day. “To watch Bob play with such consistency and to illustrate such soft hands with his short game was amazing. He was unlucky to not have broken 80.” At the centenary dinner at Te Papa Museum in Wellington, Glading was again a standout. In his speech he said: “I was married to my late wife Margaret for the past 63 years and I can honestly say that I never forgot her birthday.” It was met by a round of applause. “I guess I should add that her birthday was the same day as mine,” Glading said with a smile.
Bob Glading asked Golfer Pacific a year ago if he could write a regular coaching column mixed with some of his own golfing experiences. The column did not eventuate but in memory of his death last month, at the age of 94, we print what was to be his first offering. This month’s tip... the chip shot over the sand trap How often do we see players when faced with this simple shot either fluff it into the sand or hit it thin and the ball shoots across the green into a worse position. I shall digress a moment for a little story about this shot. Years ago, en route back to New Zealand after 10 years in South Africa, I attended The Westchester Classic tournament in New York where the great Sam Snead, then in the twilight of his great career, was in the field. Despite having watched many of the world’s greats in action, Sam Snead was not among them so I was quite excited to see him play. On arrival there he was on the 18th hole behind the bunker with the hole well away on the far side of the green, thus leaving an easy pitch shot.
At last I was to see Snead in action, even if only a simple pitch from the rough. After the usual preparation he stepped up and proceeded to fluff it in front of his nose. Here I was watching for the first time one of the greats of all time and he hits a shot which any 24 handicapper would probably have executed better. Back to business and how to avoid the sins that attend this sometimes irritating shot. Faced with a tricky shot, the tendency is to grip the club more tightly than usual. So lighten your grip so that the club head can be felt. Next, think tempo, as the whole stroke should be executed in a leisurely fashion with arms swinging away from the body before swinging down through the ball (make the ball incidental to the swing, which will allow the club to do the work). Let the club do the work of getting the ball over the obstacle (in this case, the sand
trap) rather than trying to help it into the air. Take a longer swing back than when playing a low running stroke, and avoid a common fault of following a long leisurely swing back with a hurried motion down towards the ball – the whole swing action backwards and forwards must at all times be quiet and unhurried which as I have said will allow the club head to do its job. It all sounds easy enough and in fact it is if the basics as above are followed. Spend time practising the shot until you have developed confidence, and your days of fluffing or thinning the shot are over. Confidence is of even greater importance than playing a full shot. Finally a good tip is soft hands when playing any short pitch shot. The one minute tip is be patient and practise will produce results (sometimes when you least expect it).

The incomparable life of Bob Glading
N
ew Zealand Golf was sad to lose one of our game’s real characters recently with the passing of Bob Glading. There is no doubt that there was only one R H Glading. His extraordinary life included a Distinguished Service Cross for his wartime service, he was a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to golf and he was most famous for being a two-time New Zealand Open champion in 1946 and 1947. The endless tributes that flowed when he died at the age of 94 summed up the man that he was. New Zealand Golf chairman Paul Fyfe captured the feeling when he said: “Bob was a legend in New Zealand golfing circles for the things that he achieved but more importantly the person that he was.” Bob was a legend. His infectious personality, his love for the game and his ability to talk to anyone and everyone about the game of golf were qualities of the man who lived a life less ordinary. The team at New Zealand Golf have a million Bob Glading stories to share. We’ll miss his home-baked muffins and cookies that he would drop into the office. We’ll miss his hand-written notes applying for media accreditation for New Zealand Opens. We’ll miss his endless yarns from over the years but most of all we’ll miss his genuine love for life and his laughter. The celebration of his life at the North Shore Golf Club was a special occasion to witness. Michael Glading, his eldest son and a very popular member of the staff here at

NZ Golf as the tournament director of the New Zealand Open, was blown away by the support of the golf community. On the day of his passing, Michael wrote on Facebook: “Dad passed away peacefully this morning. A great man, who had a great life – but of course we will miss him terribly. I’ve had my last putting lesson sadly!” The more than 70 comments on Facebook that followed illustrated what made Bob Glading special – he touched people’s lives. Stuart Dwight said: “A NZ golfing legend and a true gentleman. I never tired of hearing his stories and thoroughly enjoyed his humour.” Craig Palmer added: “I only met him a few years ago but what an amazing man. A genuine legend of NZ Golf.” Phil Aickin remembered: “Your dad was so passionate about our game and I will never forget having the privilege of playing with him when as a 90 year old he shot 80 around Heretaunga. An extraordinary man.” Liz McKinnon commented: “Loved your dad [Michael] – he always had a great way with women! A gentleman!” The incomparable life of Bob Glading is a lesson to us all. While it has been a sad time for many in the golf community, and will continue to be a sad time for a long while yet, a time of passing has a silver lining. It prompts the question in everyone’s life, how do you want to be remembered?
Bob’s life stirs the words of renowned African-American author Maya Angelou. She said “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Glading made you feel good about life and that you mattered. He will be sorely missed. The legend of R.H. Glading will always live on.

Make members mix with a mystery starting sheet
I
was recently asked “How do we fix golf and make it more enjoyable?” That’s a big question but the answer I offered shocked the person I was talking to. I believe the goal of every golf club is to see their members enjoying their golf games more, meeting more people and increasing their friendship networks by engaging with people throughout the golf club from all walks of life. So how do we fix golf and achieve this goal? That actually is quite easy – throw the tee sheet away at least once a month and have a random draw. On these days, when you arrive at the golf club you have no idea who you are playing with until you are about to tee off. Why will this fix golf and make playing the game more fun at your golf course? At many golf clubs, the same members tee off at 8.14 am every Saturday or at 12.20pm every Saturday. Often such groups rarely change, week after week. What this does is create cliques that many perceive to be ‘closed’ and unfriendly. When I get out and play golf I enjoy meeting new people. I discovered many years ago that everyone has a story and after four hours on the course, you usually have had a good time learning about new people. On the golf course, I rarely meet someone that I have not been able to get on with. I believe it is vital for committee members and club captains to regularly play with different groups. It’s a great opportunity for them to see who maybe ideal can-
didates to join their committees or who might be able to assist the golf club in other ways. I also consistently see slow play at the golf course caused by the same groups holding up the same players each week. With a random draw you now break up that slow play group. Guess what? The speed of play across the golf course improves which usually leads to fewer complaints. Try it and you will see it works. When I have a new member at the golf course, my staff and I personally put them into the draw. I know which members are going to be receptive and assist new players, and I know which ones won’t. It is a daunting experience being a new golfer at a golf club and when golf

clubs are struggling for new members, it is so important to create a positive environment. We did try this at my course, for a period of a few months, a few years back. Why did it not succeed? Because those same cliques enjoyed their own closed groups and some of those individuals were on the committees. They did not want to play with random members. Those select committee members voted against continuing with the mystery day. What I did learn in the process is that you should not put the draw out in advance, but only tell people when they are teeing off. This way they don’t get concerned with who they are playing with or not playing with. The mystery is discovering who you are playing with moments prior to tee off. All you are told is that you are teeing off between 12 and 12.15 or 12.15 and 12.30. This way, players are ready to go when they are called to the tee. I still believe that this process can work. The proof that this is a winning formula can be seen when you go to a small country course and play with the members. You are struck with how friendly everyone is and how they all get on. And guess what? They have no starting sheet, everyone generally rolls up and everyone plays with everyone. Then after golf everyone is in the club afterwards having a drink and talking to each other. A successful golf club is one where everyone has a good time, both on and off the golf course. Just like in that old television series Cheers, “you wanna be where everybody knows your name”.

Ryder Cup at Gleneagles completes a full circle T his year’s Ryder Cup completes a journey that started in 1921, when the first international match between professional golfers from the United States and Great Britain was played on the King’s Course at Gleneagles in Scotland. That was followed by another unofficial match at Wentworth, outside London, in 1926 before the first official Ryder Cup took place at the Worcester Country Club at Massachusetts in the United States in 1927. The cup itself was donated by Samuel Ryder, a wealthy mail order seed merchant and workaholic who was advised by his church minister to take up golf for relaxation. Ryder was then aged in his early 50s, and was clearly a man who took the advice to heart, hiring the local club professional to come to his house to give him lessons six days a week. A year later he was down to a single figure handicap and captain of the local golf club. In the 1920s he hired legendary golfer Abe Mitchell to be his personal coach for the staggering sum of £500 a year, and it is Mitchell who features as the golfer on the trophy. The initial Ryder Cup matches were generally dominated by the home teams, but after World War 2, the American dominance was such that the Great Britain and Ireland team was widened to include European players from 1979. Since then, Europe has won nine matches against the USA’s seven, with one halved. There is no other event in golf – possibly in sport in general – quite like the Ryder Cup. The two-year gap

between matches, the hand to hand contests of the matchplay format, the dramatic twists and turns during the three days (think the Medinah meltdown by the US in 2012), and the nationalistic fervour exhibited by the fans all contribute to a unique experience. Sometimes this goes too far, as with the goings-on at Brookline in 1999 when celebrations took place before victory had been confirmed. This year’s Ryder Cup takes place the week after the vote on Scottish independence, which could add its own twist to proceedings. Amongst all of this, the golf will be played on the PGA Centenary Course at Gleneagles, redesigned by Jack Nicklaus specifically for the Ryder Cup. Ideally suited for matchplay, it features a number of risk/reward holes on both nines, but a Scottish phrase book may be needed to unravel names such as Gowden Beastie (Golden Bear, the par three 4th hole at just over 220 metres), Mickle Skelp (Small Hit, another par three), and Ca’ Canny (Be Careful). The last three holes may well decide the 2014 cup, with two reachable par fives bracketing the par three 17th. Given the lead up to Gleneagles, you could be forgiven for thinking the European team is home and hosed, but world rankings and recent form do not necessarily translate into winning combinations in foursomes and fourball matches, let alone the cauldron of the conclud-
ing 12 singles matches on Sunday, September 28. There is huge pressure on team captains Paul McGinley and Tom Watson to send out the right pairings (remember the disastrous decision a few years ago to put Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson together?), and to change plans at short notice. Watson’s experience and understanding of Scottish conditions and the Gleneagles layout will be of huge benefit to the USA team, and I expect another down to the wire finish. Whatever happens, the circle started by Vardon, Hagen and Braid in 1921 will be completed by McIlroy, Garcia, Mickelson and 21 other golfers as the Ryder Cup returns to its true home.

Nelson preparing for friendly tournament
C
onsidering playing in a multiround tournament this year? ... then this is the one for you to enter. At last year’s inaugural event, it was dubbed the “friendly tournament” as everyone involved, players and organisers, had such a great time! The tournament is staged at Nelson, Greenacres and Motueka Golf Courses with two days to be played on the highly regarded Nelson Golf Course which hosted the 2014 New Zealand Amateur Championships in April this year, and received great reviews from the top players in the country and Nelson will also host the 2015 Seniors Championships in February. Nelson being a true links course, whereas Motueka is a mature parkland course, with Greenacres offering a mix of challenging waterfront and parkland holes. Tournament dates for 2014 Nelson Festival of Golf are Monday 20 - Friday 24 October with a rest day on the Wednesday to allow competitors to put their feet up, get out and about to visit the many attractions the region has to offer or get some practice for the next two days of golf. FEATURE by stone walls and water hazards, give this course a unique atmosphere. The club hosted the inter-provincials in 2002, after the clucb had a full-course irrigation system installed at a cost of $250,000. The signature hole is the par-3 14th at 188m which plays over a couple of ponds is rated among New Zealand’s best holes. Sherwood Park started life as a nine-holer. Ocean with six of them playing along the cliffs that plunge to the Ocean. The beautiful inland holes wind through marsh, forest and farmland. The complex includes a world-class practice range plus putting and chipping greens. In 2008 and 2009 the Kiwi Challenge brounght four of the world’s best players to New Zealand to play the course including sister course Cape Kidnappers located in the Hawkes Bay.
Mangawhai Golf Club Molesworth Drive, Mangawhai Heads ituated near the coast in the holiday hamlet of Mangawhai, the course was originally designed in 1979 by Harry Dale a designer of over 60 courses. Meticulously maintained the course is a demanding mixture of wide and narrow fairways, undulating greens landscaped in a picturesque setting surrounded by native bush and wetlands that attract a wide range of bird life. Developed on a sandy base, weather does not affect Mangawhai even during the wettest winters due to its excellent drainage qualities. Waitangi Golf Club Tau Henare Drive, Waitangi, Paihia ay back in 1932 Lord Bledisloe, the then Governor General, purchased over 1000 acres on the Waitangi Peninsula and donated it to New Zealand as a place of historic significance and for recreational enjoyment. What joy it brings to golfers, particularly the back nine which presents stunning views. The native fauna and flora make this course a special experience, while the brightly coloured rosella parrots, tuis, quail, wood pigeons and pukeko abound. The par-4 11th, which plays toward the Bay is being redesigned to become one of New Zealand’s great holes.

Whangarei Golf Club Denby Cres, Tikipunga, Whangarei his is the course where Sir Michael Hill first aquired his passion for golf, which ultimately led to the establishment of his fabulous course at Arrowtown, The Hills. Originally known as Mt Denby, it is Whangarei’s oldest club (dating back to 1917) and is located on the road to Whangarei Falls and Tutukaka, only 5 minutes from the city centre. The course features bush-covered walkways and is a true test for any golfer. The club’s most famous landmark is the twin pine (split by lightning) aside the par-4 sixth hole. This is a beautiful course with tight driving holes.

WAIPU HOSTS PENINSULA CHALLENGE It started out 4 years ago when winter wet weather made play at Peninsula Golf Club
in Silverdale difficult. Waipu’s then Men’s Club Captain, Gary Kaminski, invited Peninsula Club to come up for a day’s golfing on Waipu’s dry links course. A return visit was organised in the summer time with Waipu members travelling down to the Peninsula course. It has been happening every year since. This year’s winter challenge, held on Saturday 16th August, was bigger and better than ever with 54 Peninsula players coming up to Waipu for the competition and an ultimate field of 99. A trophy is played for which is held by the Club with the best average stableford score and this time Peninsula took the win with 30.11 against Waipu’s 29.39. Prizes were sponsored by GJ Gardner, Noel Leeming, Waipu Club member, Doug Shadbolt, Thirsty Liquor and Madly Indian Restaurant and their contributions helped make the event a huge success. Best stableford on the day for the Men was Naresh Nathoo (Pen) with 37 points and the best in the Ladies Division was Kath Clark (Pen) with 37 points. What a fantastic day was had by all with the Clubhouse buzzing and the camaraderie between the two clubs was in full flight. Waipu will be out in force to get back the trophy next January on Anniversary weekend. Golf View Road, Kerikeri Flourishing club with more than 400 members Bay of Islands offer some of the finest scenery of any course in New Zealand. Meticulously maintained, it makes great use of the contours sculpted by the Puketotara Stream and Kerikeri River and offers great views of native bush in which tuis abound. The club dates from 1936, although it operated with only nine holes until 1941 before going into recess. In 1969 a fresh group of golfers got active, purchased land and were playing from 1974. Five years later they had 18 holes and in 1985 they built their clubhouse, which has recently been refurbished. The signature hole is the par3 13th which plays over a steep drop to a green protected by bunkers and water hazards. Kerikeri itself, a stunning town with many historic sites, has become one of New Zealand’s must-visit places for tourists.

EAGLES V JUNIORS MATCH ENDS IN DRAW The Northland Eagles Society and the Golf Northland Junior Academy fought out a 9.5 all draw in their annual challenge at Whangarei Golf Club on Sunday August 17th. Having won the challenge for the first time in nine years in 2013 the juniors were keen to hold on to the trophy for a second straight year.
In preparation the Junior Academy side held their monthly squad training at Whangarei Golf Club the preceding day, Ady McKenzie putting them through their paces with a nutrition and strength and conditioning session educating players on how both elements are linked to player performance. The players then spent some time getting to know the course and some its more strategic holes. The five girls playing first had the juniors slightly in front early with a 3-2 advantage. The Eagles men however overturned the slight deficit winning 7.5-6.5 to leave the match deadlocked. The Eagles Society are fantastic supports of junior golf in the Northland area and the annual challenge offers a chance for it’s members to compete and get to know some of the young players coming through the ranks of Northland golf, passing on some of their knowledge in the process. Outside of junior golf the Eagles are also big supporters of the Halberg Trust. Golf Northland wish to pass on their thanks to the Eagles Society for the continued support to both causes. NORTHLAND JUNIORS IMPRESS IN THE WET The wet and windy weather did little to deter the Northland junior golf team who swept aside North Harbour in the 11th annual junior development match between the two sides at Waipu on Sunday 3rd of August. Understandably, Northland Golf Development Manager Michael Macdonald was impressed by the performance of the young Northland side. ‘It’s never easy playing in rough conditions like the players experienced’ ‘We talked with the players beforehand about preparing well, staying patient and really focusing on one shot at a time’ ‘The attitude and commitment from start to finish was fantastic’ The format sees teams of eight girls and ten boys square off against their opposite number in matchplay. The girls incorporate the use of their handicap while the boys use their gross scores. One point is awarded for each hole won and 0.5 for a halved hole. The girls competition was incredibly close, eventually finishing locked up at 72all. North Harbour number one Krytal Hu (Gulf Harbour) came up with what proved to be the all-important birdie at the final
hole, in the final match, to tie things up. Best performers for Northland were sisters Soktaera and Soktaerodh Sean (Northland) both with 12-6 wins and Taimana Ngakuru (Northland) with a 10-8 victory. On the boys side of the draw it was one way traffic with the Northland team winning a staggering nine out of the ten matches. Christian Nitsche (Whangarei) and debutant Jamie Thomas (Wellsford) were the biggest winners both with 13.54.5 wins, Taylor Gill (Bay of Islands Kerikeri) and Ben Kennedy (Houhora) had the next best margins with 12-6 wins. The combined overall result: Northland 190, North Harbour 134 The win, Northlands first at the event since 2010 will give players a confidence boost as they begin the count down to the week long National Junior Interprovincial events at Cambridge (Boys) and Rotorua (Girls) in early October. NORTH HARBOUR PENNANT COMPETITIONS North Harbour continues its tradition of catering to all different levels of golfers with the two different pennant competitions we are currently running. The Mixed Pennant Competition commenced on August the 17th and incorporates Men’s and Women’s foursomes matches. There are 16 teams competing in the popular competition and provides an opportunity for men and women to compete in together in the same team. The competition was started in 1994 and continues popular to
this day. Another competition that recently commenced is the men’s senior interclub competition which is played during the week and incorporates 6 rounds of home and away matches in four divisions then a semi-final/final. This is for men over the age of 55 and has 16 teams competing in 2014.
NORTH HARBOUR WOMENS PROVINCIAL MATCH PLAY The North Harbour Women’s Provincial Match Play tournament is being contested from September 20th to 21st at Omaha Beach Golf. The event is sponsored/supported by TaylorMade / adidas nz and is North Harbour’s showcase event for amateur women. The events section comprise of a championship (off the stick), masters (over 35) and handicap match play division so everyone is catered for. WHITCOME CUP The Whitcome Cup was played at Warkworth Golf Club with two nine hole rounds on Sunday, 27th July. The cup was presented by the family of Len Whitcombe who died during his term as Club Captain. Len liked to see players enjoying each others company, and it was a fitting day to honor Len. The format was originally a two day competition where players were seeded and drawn for a best combined Stableford on the second day, but this year was played

YOUTH PENNANTS TEAM CAPS OFF STELLAR YEAR
The Remuera Golf Club’s Youth Pennants team capped off a great year for the Club when they won the Youth Pennants title at The Grange Golf Club played on Sunday August 10. Remuera were pushed hard in the semi final finally overcoming Howick by 4 matches to 2. Royal Auckland ran away with the other semi final defeating Maungakiekie by 6 matches to nil. So it was the final that attracted a lot of interest and a tie that did not disappoint. Playing the final hole of regulation play, Royal Auckland’s George Helsby needed to win the hole to force a play off; and win it he did with a fine iron shot to within 2 meters of the hole and a great birdie. Both teams selected one player to compete in the play off – Remuera chose Tom Ritchie and Royal Auckland George Helsby. Both players made par on the first play off hole (14th hole) but it was Remuera’s Tom Ritchie who two putted for par on the second play off hole to win the title for his team after Helsby had bunkered his tee shot on the par 3 15th hole.

The 2014 Pro Drive Waikato Men’s Masters Championship was held on Saturday 16th August at Waikare Golf Club. The stunning summer like day saw 91 competitors take to the immaculately prepared Course, for this 36 hole event. The morning round providing some close scoring with a number of sub-par rounds being recorded. However, the afternoon round proved to be somewhat more difficult and following his morning round of 2 under par 68, Gareth Chitty from Titirangi shot a 3 over Par 73 to win the Gross Division by 2 Shots. A 2 Round Nett Total of 137, was good enough for Brent Fabish from Akarana Golf Club to take out the Nett Division by 4 shots from Andrew Rye of Cambridge Golf Club. With outstanding sponsorship support from Pro Drive Hamilton, the prize table was both extensive and generous in it’s make up, with presentation’s being made to the top 20 Players in each Division. Waikato Golf CEO, Terry Booth said he was delighted with the response to this year’s event and acknowledged the ongoing support from the Team at Pro Drive Hamilton and Waikare Golf Club, which allowed this prestigious event on the NZ Golfing Calendar to continue growing each year.
Classic Builders’ Cambridge Classic 2014 The first round of the annual Classic Builders Cambridge Classic, played at Cambridge Golf Club was held on Friday the 8th of August. The field of 108 players were split into morning and afternoon tee times for the first two rounds. Challenging conditions for the first two rounds meant that the cut (top 60 and ties) was pushed as far as 15 over for the tournament. The weather played its part on the 36 hole final day Sunday with mere perfect conditions for the first round and most of the second round. A number of Waikato players participated in the event. Notables include Nick Coxon, Justin Morris, Denzel Ieremia, and Sam Vincent who all finished in the top 10. Brad Hayward (New Plymouth) took out the Men’s title with an impressive 7 shot victory over Waikato’s Nick Coxon. Hayward finished on a total of 12 under par a tremendous result in what was a fantastic tournament.

WAIKATO WINTER STROKEPLAY The annual Waikato Winter Strokeplay was held Friday the 25th to Sunday the 27th of July at the Riverside Golf Club – Lochiel Course. The course was in fantastic condition and the Waikato weather played its part over the 3 day event. Notable performances from Nick Coxon, Denzel Ieremia, Sam Vincent, Agni Bhorkar and Daniel Graham who all finished in the top 20 of the 105 player field. Coxon was the best of the Waikato players who finished in a share of 3rd place with scores of 72, 67, 71, 69 for a 9 under par total. It was Northland Representative Kadin Neho who blew the field away with a tournament record total of -16. With scores of 73, 65, 69, 65 Neho was four shots clear of his nearest competitor Brad Hayward from Taranaki. Could the Napier Golf Club women’s contingent be on the verge of producing a performance enhancing drink ready for export? This question had to be asked after the club dominated Golf Hawke’s Bay’s women’s pennants competitions this winter collecting four trophies in the process. But club co-ordinator Liz Stringer was quick to point out “it was just a case of good old club spirit and camaraderie”. “We’re proud of the way our players are so keen to front up particularly with the regular bouts of inclement weather we had. Often a player would withdraw through illness on a Sunday of the week we were playing but there was no shortage of players putting up their hands wanting to take their place,” Stringer said. Napier’s weekend women’s top team, which includes three-time New Zealand
Maori champion and this year’s runner-up at the New Zealand Amateur tournament, Kate Chadwick, won the Crossman Cup and Golf Fanatics Fourball Matchplay Trophy, a first for the club in the same season under the new competitions format introduced two years ago. Co-captains of the team, Raewyn Holloway and Pip McCarthy, were thrilled with their nine-strong team’s unbeaten run in a five-team competition. They recorded six wins and two halves. “Going into the last round we were one point behind Hastings but we did what we had to on a neutral course, Hawke’s Bay, in miserable weather conditions,” McCarthy said. She praised club stalwart Kathy Mohi for her high levels of consistency throughout the campaign. “We had three reserves who didn’t play and that was another key to our success... top-quality competition for starting berths,” Holloway said. The Gael Roebuck-led Napier Totara division two team finished first equal with Waipukurau after recording five wins, two draws and two losses.

GOLF TRAILS “All of our players got an even amount of games and good team spirit and focus got us a share of the spoils,” Roebuck said. “Our last match against Combined was a down-to-the-wire affair but we secured the draw we needed in what is the toughest division in terms of numbers as most of the players have handicaps between 11.4 and 29.7. All of our players will be available again next year... this is a sought-after team to be in,” Roebuck added. Captain of the club’s weekday first division Napier Rimu team, Sandy Hooper, said “a never-say-die” approach propelled her team to title glory after five rounds of play. “It was a good team effort, we were quite dedicated and all of the team will be back next year,” she said.

Hastings Golf Club and SpecialTee Golf invite all keen lady golfers to their fashion show, coming up on 10 September. After a hugely successful inaugural event in 2013, organisers are pleased to bring it back again – bigger, better and more fabulous than before! “Every golfer wants to look smart and stylish when she is driving, chipping or putting. This event is all about looking glam and sophisticated – both on and off the course!” says Hastings Pro Brett Allan. “We are showcasing the up-to-the-minute fashion trends in golf attire – catering for all shapes, sizes and tastes! “This year we have a few new surprises up our sleeves! JUNIORS LINE UP FOR CHAMPIONSHIP Young golfers from all over New Zealand will compete in the 54 hole Eagles Boys and Girls Golf Championship of New Zealand 54 hole event at the Levin Golf Club on 29th, 30th September and the 1st October. They will arrive at Moutere Links for a practice round on Monday then play 36 holes Tuesday and a morning shotgun start will take place for the final round on Wednesday morning. The 15 Eagle Societies from around New Zealand have each found a team of three to represent them. In mid August 104 Ladies from the lower North Island played the sponsored Placemakers Paraparaumu 6 x 6 x 6 open day. Each six holes have a different format and the girls really enjoy it. The winners were Mary Smith, Annette Waugh, Lesley Radovanovch and Karen Earle all from Feilding Golf Club. 2nd place was Bernie Olsen from Levin with Adianne McMillian from Kapiti. Then there was Ralda Adams Levin with Jan Moyle (Miramar) followed by Janice Hesp and Karina MacDonald (Levin).
Castlecliff GC advise that the Andersons by the Fountain tournament, one of the major events on our calendar, has been moved to Labour Weekend. This will take the form of the Calcutta on the Saturday evening, followed by 18-hole stableford rounds on the Sunday and Monday. Partners will be drawn and as usual will not play together.

Professional Wanganui golfer Nick Gillespie competed in the field as a guest. Nick was top scorer with rounds of 70 and 71, but was not eligible for the trophy. In the Ladies division Emma Clayton had 2 rounds of 77 to finish 3 shots clear of Wanganui/Castlecliff’s Amber Rose Thompson-Newth with rounds of 79 and 78. Levin’s Brydie Hodge was 3rd with rounds of 80 and 80.

ENJOY THE CLIMATE OF JUDGEFORD Judgeford is located just 25 minutes drive from the CBD, between Paremata and the Hutt Valley, on State Highway 58. We are fortunate to enjoy a unique microclimate in terms of weather patterns where often the weather variables are subtly different from the prevailing conditions in surrounding areas. The course is set amongst rolling picturesque countryside with easy walking, treelined fairways. The design of the course follows natural contours and includes a meandering stream and a feature lake. The 18 hole, 5572 metre course combines a number of features that provide an interesting and challenging test for golfers of all ages and abilities. Twelve holes are located on one side of State Highway 58, the first seven presenting more of a challenge with undulating slopes and elevated tees. A further six holes, located across the road (accessed by underground walkway) feature a flatter layout with some elevated tees. Bottle Lake player Jim Rea had every reason to lose his voice in frustration last week. Like many of us, the 24-handicapper doesn’t make too many birdies. In fact, you have to go back 23 rounds to see his last one. So with Bottle Lake’s Twos and Net Eagles competitions alive, Rea lined up a rare birdie putt at the course’s 120m, parthree 16th last week. The pin was out, Rea had read the green well and slid what would have been a handy birdie putt into the heart of the hole. As he fist-pumped and his mates congratulated him, something very odd happened. The ball bounced out of the hole, propelled out by a perplexed frog. As the frog hopped away debate immediately started over whether or not Rea should have to re-hole his putt. It was decided he needed to play the ball as it lay and he tapped the ball in for a second time, for a par-three. We’re unsure quite how long the ball was in the hole for but, in case it happens again, here’s the official rule. A ball is considered “holed” when it comes to rest in the hole
with the entire ball below the surface. So maybe Bottle Lake need to flick Rea a couple of golf balls for his two. And his mates, who made him putt the ball again, might owe him a lemonade.
CANTERBURY Town dominates Town vs Country Last year’s Town vs Country was sadly reduced to a single round due to heavy rains, flooded greens and dampened spirits. This year the weather gods decided to prolong the start by covering the course with frost which meant delaying the start from 8am to 9:30am. Many players decided to go back home and watch some of the golf on the telly while others took the time to relax in the clubhouse, chat with mates and some even took the opportunity to get some pretest homework done in the clubhouse. Somehow this delay may be a blessing as this allowed some time to deal with a number of last minute player changes from both sides causing some headaches for the organisers. However, the weather for the rest of the day was superb resulting in some pleasant viewing from the side lines. The golf course was presented in magnificent condition and even after a lot of rain prior to the weekend, it was firm and the greens were reported to be receptive and smooth. Because of the delay the format for the morning round was changed to Foursomes Match Play where the men’s Town teams dominated with the following results all going to Town. Seniors won 6 – 0, Juniors won 2.5 – 1.5 and Masters won 2 – 1. The afternoon round was played as singles Match Play and again, the men from Town showed a similar dominance. All divisions were won by Town with the following results: Senior men won 10.5 – 1.5, Juniors won 5 – 3 and Masters won 5.5 – 0.5. The combined result was a win for Town.
WOODWARD CUP ROUND 1 AT RANGIORA Fine winter conditions greeted players for the first round of the 2014 Woodward Cup played at Rangiora Golf Club, August 11. The multi-tee start ensured that there was plenty of action right around the course. There were some interesting results. Clearwater were tipped to be strong contenders this year but got off to a slow start with a 3-3 draw against Coringa. Matt was five under for his round when the match finished on the 11th hole. The upset of the round went to Waimairi Beach when they beat last year’s semifinalists Waitikiri 4-2. Waitikiri had two players on debut and have lost Jason Yoo, but credit must go to Waimairi Beach with wins to Mike Berry, Regan Kidd, Brett Turner and halves to Philip Davis and Moon Hak Lee. In the other results Weedons had a good win over Bottle Lake 4-2, Templeton had to work hard to subdue Harewood 4-2, and Christchurch beat Avondale 5Rangiora’s Shaun Allan is pictured left, on the tee against Connell Kilpatrick. OTAGO FOURSOMES On Sunday August 3rd the Otago Foursomes sponsored by Titleist Golf was contested at Chisholm Park Golf Club with 150 players (75 teams, 66 men & 9 ladies). The golfers were in praise of the quality of the links golf course and the scores reflected at the tough but fair conditions with a cold southerly breeze. Both the men’s and women’s competitions were won in sudden death playoffs. In the men’s event, Michael Minty and Philip Bungard finished 1-over for the day on 143 (for 36-holes) to tie with Brandon Hodgson and Daniel Elder. Hodgson and Elder held the lead at the halfway stage but Minty and Bungard finished strongly making birdies on 15, 16 and 18 to force the playoff. Both teams drove on to the 18th green in the playoff with Bungard and Minty making a birdie three to clinch the title over Hodgson and Elder when they made par. In the women’s event Sally Shaw and Tracy Storer held a five-shot lead at lunch. Susan Greig and Abigail Crawford played a strong round in the afternoon scoring 76 to tie Shaw and Storer. Seven golf professionals played in the event including touring professionals Mahal Pearce and David Klein. Otago’s leading amateurs played with other players travelling from Southland, Aorangi and Bungard travelling down from Christchurch.
CENTRAL OTAGO SUCCESS IN ANNUAL V SOUTHLAND MATCH The Central Otago senior men’s team recorded an impressive 11 1/2 – 4 1/2 win over Southland in the annual matchplay fixture, held at Jacks Point on 16/17 August. Central players Kayne Wardell, Simon Hollyer and Peter Buckley recorded two wins for the weekend, with James Anstiss and Daniel Barnett also unbeaten with a win and a halve each. Central led after Saturday’s reverse singles round by a slender one game margin at 5 1/2 to 4 1/2, taking Sundays singles matches by 6 games to 4.
The Masters section appeared to be heading for a close result when Saturday’s reverse singles went to Southland 3 1/2 to 2 1/2, by Central capitulated on the Sunday singles round, with Southland winning all 6 games to record a final win by 9 1/2 to 2 1/2.

OTAGO & TAPANUI ARE CHAMPIONS OF OTAGO 2014 The 2014 Champions of Otago tournament was hosted by the Cromwell Golf club on Sunday 17th of August. Played over 18 holes, the 25 club teams competing were treated to a stunning late winters day of bright sunshine and a gentle breeze. The warmth of the day had a distinctly Spring feel about it and was far removed from the blizzard conditions of the week leading up to the event. The competition consists of club teams of 3 players, being the current senior, intermediate and junior champions. There are two titles up for grabs; the gross stableford team trophy and a nett division, also in the team format. The Otago Golf Club, led by Dan Elder, won the gross section with a team total of 70. The win completed a hat trick for the Balmacewen golfers who have won the gross section for the past three years. Port Chalmers finished just a single point behind on 69 points. CROUDIS RETURN BOLSTERS OTAGO TRIAL SQUAD After graduating with a business degree majoring in finance from Iowa State University earlier this month, Duncan Croudis has returned to Dunedin to unveil his future plans. Croudis (22) has decided to remain an amateur for the next 18 months and has made himself available for all Otago men’s teams. The decision is a fillip for Otago golf as Croudis will bring a wealth of golfing experience to teams after completing his golf scholarship at Iowa. Croudis had an impressive resume before leaving for the United States, being unbeaten in three national interprovincial tournaments as well as winning the New Zealand under-19 title on the North Shore in 2009. “I intend to turn professional at the end of next year, looking at attending Q-schools for the OneAsia tour, the China PGA Tour and the Australasian Tour,” Croudis said. “At present I am looking for some parttime work which will enable me to use the skills I picked up while at college. “I feel this is very important as, if my golfing aspirations don’t work out, I will have something to fall back on.” Croudis is excited about the prospect of playing tournaments in Otago, New Zealand and Australia during the next year and a half. “I am aware that Otago men’s golf is getting stronger after the team made the Toro playoffs last year.” Croudis is under no illusion that, with his previous record, he will walk into the Otago teams. “There is quite a lot of depth in Otago at present and this will provide a challenge to make all teams. This will help me hone my skills and will provide me with the best build-up before giving professional golf a go next December.”

Making golf cool again for youngsters is the aim of Queenstown Golf Club boss John Stephens. Concerned by the rapid decline of junior golf membership in the Wakatipu, he’s hit upon a radical but simple idea that’s never been tried before in New Zealand. From September 1, four golf clubs – Frankton, Queenstown, Arrowtown and Millbrook – will disband their junior divisions. Under-19 golfers will instead join the new Wakatipu Junior Golf Club. It’s a soon-to-be-registered charitable trust offering full playing rights at Frank-
ton, Queenstown and Arrowtown, limited access to Millbrook and possibly training sessions at Jack’s Point and The Hills. WJGC members will be encouraged to join weekly training sessions conducted by local professionals and play in specially arranged Sunday competitions. Stephens – secretary-manager of the Arrowtown club before joining the Kelvin Heights course-based Queenstown club almost two years ago – has witnessed a dramatic drop-off in junior ranks. From 236 juniors across the Queenstown, Frankton and Arrowtown clubs in 2009, there are now only about 115. Of those 115, only about 32 actively play and hold handicaps. Stephens also points out the average age of Queenstown and Arrowtown club members is 58 and 57, respectively, and Queenstown has only five women members under 45. While stressing there’s no one major reason for the decline in young players, also afflicting other NZ clubs, Stephens says: “We don’t value junior golf a lot. “We’re thinking about those big high-fallutin’ Americans coming over and playing our top courses and forgetting about the grassroots.” Apart from one-hour sessions at the council-run Frankton Golf Centre on Sunday mornings, there’s no golf coaching for youngsters unless they pay for a pro. A nine-yearold who joined a local club, for example, would be given a membership and use of the course. But then they’d be told, “there you go, see you later, we’ll see you in a year when you can renew your membership”, Stephens says. “That’s pretty much how juniors have been treated at the golf clubs in the past. “There’s been a junior convenor and a couple of tournaments a year but nothing really organised. “It’s quite tough for a nine-year old to get enthusiastic – they’ve actually got to find their own drive. “Whereas now, as soon as you join up as a WJGC member, you’ll be asked to like us on Facebook, you’ll be asked to hand over your email address or your mobile phone number and you’ll be kept in contact at least once every two weeks about upcoming events, organised training sessions. “You’ll have free coaching available during the week – that might be at Arrowtown, Queenstown, Millbrook, The Hills, Jack’s Point, Frankton – but you also might be keen on Sunday mornings to join either three-, nine- or 18-hole competitions that will be organised at one of the clubs each week.” Stephens is advertising for a part-time coordinator who will report to a board of trustees. Juniors will pay $80 a year to join the WJGC as against $55 for their current one-course-based subscription, and their handicap will be held at the Frankton Golf Centre. Stephens says there’s “a bit of method to my madness” in holding handicaps at Frankton. There’ve been threats to the future of the entry-level nine-hole Frankton course and driving range, so an influx of juniors might make the council think twice about closing it, he says. Stephens commends The First Tee programme, which introduces many local youngsters to the game, but says there’s been no pathway beyond that. “I know there’s a lot of juniors out there, especially that were part of those 230-odd in 2009, that just aren’t playing because
they haven’t had any reason to. “But if they see on Facebook that, ‘oh, WJGC, oh, that’s quite cool’ … we just want to make golf cool again. “It’s bringing golf to another level for juniors rather than just giving them a free-for-all. “We’ve got the resources here – the golf courses, equipment, the pros, the money, too – and a lot more families coming here. “It’s just to create an easy way for kids to learn the game.” Stephens says NZ Golf is looking at the WJGC example as a possible future template.
