he game of golf never ceases to amaze me – whether it is at the heights of the best players in the world or at club members’ level. This story I am about to relate to you comes from the latter level. I organise a Friday get-together at our club and last month my mischievous mind swung into action. To add a little spice for the Friday morning golfers I asked our greenkeeper to cut a hole much bigger than usual on the eighth green and a hole much smaller than usual on the 18th. But those two alterations were ho-hum in comparison to my third request. The third hole at our course has a twotiered green with a steep slope between the two levels. No prizes for guessing where I asked the greenkeeper to cut the hole – halfway up the slope. I don’t know what it is with me. I just have this nasty streak running through me.

I knew this would be an “impossible” putt but I was rubbing my hands with glee and chuckling like a mad scientist out of a movie. But after some thought a little sanity did prevail. I also arranged for the tees on the hole to be placed well forward. That would enable most of the Friday group to reach the par five in two in anticipation of the chaos that lay ahead on the green. And to avoid play becoming banked up on the third green, it was decided players would be required to pick up after three putts and count the fourth putt as being holed. Did you notice earlier in this column that I put the word impossible inside quotation marks? What was supposed to be impossible, wasn’t. Much to my disbelief, one woman one-putted. The mad scientist was no longer chuckling. “Yeah, I did,” she said in a nonchalant voice. It was quite easy. She hit it up the slope and it went in, she said. I marvelled at the simplicity of her explanation.

The only thing I was thankful for was that I had checked prior to the prize-giving if anyone had indeed one-putted. I was going to pretend there was a fancy, new driver up for grabs for anyone that had one-putted. I would have been a tad embarrassed if I hadn’t checked beforehand. I was even asked what’s that fancy, new driver you have in your hand. “Oh, nothing,” I replied, realising it wasn’t a very convincing response. Then there was the big hole on the eighth and little hole on the 18th. Guess what happened. Very few one-putted the eighth and several one-putted the 18th. It didn’t make any sense. That scenario also reminds me of one of my favourite sayings when I happen to fluke a longish putt. As I walk towards the hole to proudly pick out the ball, I usually tell the opposition in a matter-of-fact voice: “This game’s too easy – they make the holes too big.”

Brother and sister making their marks They are New Zealand golf’s family double. Tyler Hodge won the New Zealand Under-19 Championship in 2012. Younger sister Brydie did the same at Taupo last month. Tyler won the Wellington Strokeplay at Miramar last month, Brydie did the same in the women’s section. Golfer Pacific spoke with both players and following are their stories.

Tyler Hodge... the world left-hand champion

T

yler Hodge scored his first hole-inone at age six, he’s the first player to win the New Zealand and Australian Under-19 Championships in the same year and it goes without saying he wants to play golf at the top level. “I want to take it as far as possible,’’ Hodge candidly told Golfer Pacific of his golfing ambition. “The goal is to play on the PGA Tour. If I don’t make it playing golf I could become a coach or maybe even a caddy – as long as it’s something to do with golf.’’ When told the PGA Tour was a lofty goal there was no apology. “Why not? You are probably not going to succeed if you don’t aim to be one of the best.’’ Hodge, 20, has basically been playing golf full-time since he left Horowhenua College in Levin nearly three years ago and noticed his game improved dramatically. “Most definitely. I won 13 or 14 times in the year after I left school.’’ Amongst the wins were two of his best. They were the Australia Under-19 Championship and the New Zealand Under-19 Championship. Both wins were achieved in 2012 and Hodge became the first player to win both titles in the same year. Hodge, a left-hander, also has a world title to his name. Last year he won the World Left-Hand Golf Championship in Turkey. He is proud to have that win on his golfing curriculum vitae but admits the name of

the tournament inflates the grandeur as it was partly a social event for some. “The competition wasn’t probably as good as it sounds but it’s got world at the front of the name and it’s not a bad thing to have on your resume.’’ Another overseas venue where Hodge has shined is South Africa. The event was the inaugural Ten Nations Cup, an amateur teams’ contest which is an amalgamation of the Four Nations Cup and Southern Cross Trophy. Countries competing against New Zealand were England, Scotland, Ireland, South Africa, Australia, South Korea, France, Argentina and Colombia. The New Zealand team finished second, beaten one shot, and Hodge was secondbest individual behind Australia’s Brady Watt. A few weeks after the tournament Watt attained the world No 1 amateur ranking and has since turned professional. Another highlight to date was playing last year’s Australian Open. He gained a start in that event by virtue of his Australian Under-19 win and remembers his practice round as much as anything. In the practice game he was in the group ahead of Australian great Adam Scott and United States veteran Tom Watson. “It was pretty cool. We only played about 12 holes but I managed to grab Adam Scott and we played the 18th together.’’ Hodge has been playing golf since he was aged three with father Marty the catalyst.

“Dad and his cricket team would usually go for a whack of nine holes before their cricket game. I would tag along and that’s pretty much how it all started.’’ Three years later, at age six, Hodge scored his first hole-in-one at the now closed nine-hole Hokio Sands course at Levin. Hodge has since added a further two holes-in-one, both at age 15. One was in a junior event at the Rangitikei Golf Club and the other in the Manawatu Open at the Manawatu Golf Club. When he won the Wellington Strokeplay last month it came as relief but not merely because it was his first win for the year. The relief was more to do with having overcome injury. In March he underwent surgery to remove an abscess that had developed on his lower back. “The abscess was nothing golf-related, it was just one of those things. It still hasn’t fully healed but it doesn’t cause me pain anymore.’’ Hodge is not a total left-hander. He uses his right hand for writing, bowling a cricket ball or throwing a ball. “If it’s one hand I use the right, if it’s two hands (such as holding a golf club) it’s left-handed.’’ He now wants to clasp his golfing career with both hands and take it to the next level.

Brydie Hodge ... golf’s next ambassador?

B

rydie Hodge may only be a teenager but she already has golf’s future at heart – especially the women’s game. Hodge has the usual aspirations such as taking up a golf scholarship in the United States and becoming a professional player but doesn’t confine thoughts about what lies ahead to herself. G o l f is no different to most sports in that many of its participants drift out of the game after their teenage years but for Hodge, a scratch handicapper, it still remains a disappointment. Hodge, 18, only has to look in her own backyard at the Levin Golf Club to see the lack of women players aged in their 30s. “I look at my own golf club and there’s not many girls out there,’’ Hodge told Golfer Pacific. “There’s pretty much me and a couple just starting out. “Through my rep golf I see girls getting really good, then they get to about age 20

and they just give it up. If you can keep them playing they could be great golfers.’’ Playing golf as a career is Hodge’s priority at this stage but it seems she would be just as happy promoting golf – women’s golf in particular. “I would love to become a professional golfer one day. I’m really into women’s golf and maybe I could even become a women’s golf ambassador somewhere along the line. “I would like to try and influence women, especially those in their 30s, to stay in the game -- that’s where the game loses them.’’ Hodge has been playing golf since she was seven but has really made a name for herself just recently. Last month she scored her biggest win when taking out the New Zealand Under-19 Championship at Taupo and then put icing on the cake by winning the Wellington Strokeplay. In the under-19 tournament she came from six shots behind going into the final round to win by three after carding a three-under par 69. Hodge finished her round about 15-20 minutes before her main rival and had an anxious wait before victory was confirmed. “I thought I was maybe one shot ahead but I wasn’t sure and I wasn’t going to count my chickens. “Everyone kept coming up to me and saying congratulations. I said it’s not over yet, I don’t know.’’ When she was advised of the win her first thought was to her father Marty. “I gave my dad a big hug. He came up and supported me on the weekend. I had a smile from ear to ear.’’ It was Marty Hodge that introduced Brydie and her older brother Tyler to golf.

“Dad mainly taught both of us. He was a good all-round sportsman, he just gave us a few hints,’’ Brydie recalled. “I didn’t get interested as young as Tyler, he was (aged) three. I started playing when I was about seven. “He started playing more and more and I just thought if he can do it, I can do it -- a bit of sibling rivalry I suppose.’’ Brydie and Tyler both started their golf at the nine-hole Hokio Sands course in Levin which has since closed. “It was a good size for our little legs. It was really good for getting us into the game.’’ Brydie Hodge understands becoming a professional player is easier said than done. “It definitely is. It involves a lot of hard work. But I reckon if you have got the right mindset anyone can do it.’’ In the meantime the Interprovincials at Hamilton in December are an important event coming up for her. Hodge has represented Manawatu-Wanganui in the last four years and last year played at No 1. She said she needed to work on her short game to be even more competitive. “I need to improve my distance control -- get better with my accuracy and judgment. If I can hit more greens in regulation I should be able to play more consistently.’’ Hodge also came from behind to win the Wellington Strokeplay. She was three shots behind the leader going into the final round but ended up winning by three. She saved her best for last with a four-over 75 in the last of the four rounds. Hodge said it was more of a grinding win than anything spectacular. “There was the usual Wellington wind blowing and I didn’t necessarily score very well. On the last day I just scrambled mostly and tried to keep the mistakes down.’’

Six of the best for Asia-Pacific Amateur

N Toomey second in New Caledonia Waikato amateur Luke Toomey had his best finish in a professional tournament when second in the South Pacific Open in New Caledonia. Toomey had rounds of 73, 64, 69 and 68 for a 10-under par total at the Tina Golf Club in Noumea to be five shots in arrears of runaway winner Adam Stephens from Australia. Toomey, 21, the New Zealand Strokeplay winner, made five birdies and two bogeys in his final round. ``To come here and shoot some good numbers and finish second is very encouraging,” Toomey said. ``This is a golf course that demands confidence, which was a goal of mine at the start of the week. Last year I didn’t play with any and it punished me. So the biggest thing I have learnt is that confidence is key.” Rotorua professional Peter Lee was the best of the Kiwi professionals in the field. The former Bay of Plenty rep had a four-under par 67 in the final round to finish in a share of fifth place. Photo: Photosport/file

ew Zealand will have six golfers competing at the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship at Royal Melbourne this month. They are Tae Koh (Manukau), Joshua Munn (Manawatu), James Beale (North Shore), Jordan Bakermans (Christchurch), Tyler Hodge (Levin) and Blair Riordan (Takaka). New Zealand gained the maximum number of entries because of the players’ high positions on the world amateur rankings as at August 14. The event, to be held from October 2326, is organised by the Asia Pacific Golf Confederation (APGC), the Masters Tournament and The Royal and Ancient. It will feature up to 120 players from the APGC’s 36 member associations. Nations are offered between two to six invitations depending on their players’ rankings. The championship provides the winner an invitation to the 2015 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club, while the champion and runner(s)-up earn spots in the international final qualifying for The Open Championship in Britain. Koh, 21, won the Australian Amateur Championship in January to become only the third Kiwi to win the title and first since Michael Campbell 22 years earlier. Munn has also had his own fair share of success in Australia. The New Zealand Amateur Champion won the Lake Macquarie Amateur Championship in 2013 when he shot a final round six-under par 66 to win by three. His Manawatu team-mate Hodge won his first international title in Brisbane in 2012 when he won the Australian Under-19

Championship. He went on to become the first Kiwi golfer to win both the Australian and New Zealand Under-19 titles in the same year. Riordan, the North Island Strokeplay champion, was part of the team which won the Sloan Morpeth Trophy in the TransTasman Cup alongside McCall, Munn and Hodge in 2012. US-based Beale made headlines earlier this year when he became the third Kiwi golfer to win the Canadian Amateur. Bakermans has shown he has the ability to compete at the highest level. The Canterbury representative secured the biggest win of his career in March when he won the Bledisloe Cup for the leading amateur at the New Zealand Open in Queenstown. He also finished second at the South Island Strokeplay. Gregg Thorpe, the high performance manager at New Zealand Golf, believed the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship presented a great opportunity for all six players. “This event has gone from strength to strength in a short time to be recognised around the world as a tournament of real significance,” Thorpe said. “International events like this are ideal for emerging talent to develop experience at this level or for the players nearing the end of their amateur days to showcase their abilities.’’ The championship will be broadcast to more than 150 countries, confirming it as the world’s most televised amateur golf tournament. One of New Zealand’s most successful touring professionals Frank Nobilo, who

helped the international team win the Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne in 1998, is returning as part of the commentary team. “Like most, I forged my game in amateur tournaments early in my career,” said Nobilo, who turned pro in 1979, having won the New Zealand Amateur Championship the previous year. “So I’m delighted to join the commentary team for this year’s Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship, which offers exciting opportunities to play in the majors that we never had in our day.”

Australia racks up third win in Espirito Santo; NZ 34th New Zealand finished a disappointing 34th of 50 teams at the Espirito Santo Trophy in Japan. The Espirito Santo is the premier world teams’ event for women amateur golfers but the New Zealand side of Munchin Keh, Julianne Alvarez and Zoe-Beth Brake was well off the pace. In a format where the two best scores from the three players count towards the team’s tally the New Zealanders ended with a 19 over par total from four rounds. That was 48 shots from the winner Australia which had a 29 under par total. Keh, from Auckland, was the best of the Kiwis with scores of 76, 68, 76 and 76 while Wellington’s Julianne Alvarez was secondbest with 78, 70, 73 and 78. Brake, from Bay of Plenty, failed to have a counting score with rounds of 79, 76, 77 and 80. Australia’s win represented one the best comebacks in the 26 runnings of the Espirito Santo which is held once every two years. Australia was seven shots behind Canada going into the final day but brilliant rounds of 65 by Minjee Lee and 66 by Su Oh saw them get home by two shots. Australian captain Matt Cutler said his team knew it had a tall task ahead of them going into the last day but never counted out its chances.

“They never thought they were out of it but they were close to possibly being out of it,” Cutler said. “We had a really slow start to the week with an even par round at Iriyama (on the first day) and we thought we might have too much work to do. But, it was the fastest start (on the final day) you could ever see coming.” Australia took the lead through six holes of the final round as Lee, who at the time was the world No 1 ranked women amateur, was four-under par through five holes, with an eagle and two birdies, while Oh was threeunder par with three birdies. Australia’s win was its third in the competition and is the now the second-equal most successful country in the Espirito Santo behind the United States which has won 13 times. Australia’s two other wins came in Fiji in 1978 and in Malaysia in 2002. New Zealand has yet to win the Espirito Santo but has twice finished runner-up twice – in Switzerland (1982) and in Christchurch (1990). Australia’s star performer Minjee Lee subsequently turned professional. She made her professional debut in one of golf’s majors, the Evian Championship in France and finished a very creditable 16th to pocket $US42,000 ($NZ51,000).

Kinloch rated No. 1 K

which has recently undergone major reconstruction. Because it was not a resort course it has therefore become the No 1 “members’ club’’ course, according to the rankings. Those who provided rankings were: Phil Aicken (former NZ golf rep and NZ Golf staff member), Kevin Armstrong (national referee and golf author from Nelson), Michael Barltrop (NZ selector and former NZ rep, Auckland), Duncan Simpson (NZPGA chief executive), Susan Farron (NZPGA tour player and coach), Fraser Wilkin (tour player), Dane Hawker (North Shore GC superintendent), Michael Hendry (tour player), Doug Holloway (tour player), Leo Barber (Paraparaumu GC superintendent and manager), Murray Macklin (NZPGA member), Dave Mangan (NZ Golf general manager), Jamie McIsaac (head pro Frankton GC, Queenstown), Nigel Merrett (NZPGA board member), Grant Moorhead (tour player), Craig Palmer (head pro, The Hills GC, Queenstown), Alan Roser (NZPGA member and golf retailer, Dunedin), Duncan Sainsbury (NZPGA education manager), Shelley Duncan (head pro Otago GC), John Spraggs (Royal Wellington superintendent), Greg Turner (tour player), John Sanders (former NZ golf rep and golf retailer, Christchurch).

inloch golf course in Taupo has been ranked New Zealand’s best in a new survey. The survey was conducted by Golfer Pacific columnist and Dunedin golf professional Andrew Whiley. He asked 22 people, including tour professionals, to rate 15 selected North Island courses and 15 selected South Island courses. Rankers were required to rate each course on a scale of one to five from seven different criteria – shot values, resistance to scoring, design variety, memorability, aesthetics, conditioning and ambience. Kinloch came out on top with an average score of 30.2 from a possible 35. But it was close between the top five with only one point between them. Second with 30 points was The Hills followed by Jack’s Point (29.87), Cape Kidnappers (29.81) and Kauri Cliffs (29.2). The ranking system is the same as used by Golf Digest magazine which Whiley said is used globally as the main formula for ranking golf courses around the world. Whiley said it was no coincidence that the top five were all resort courses which carried bigger budgets than most others. In sixth place was Royal Wellington

Munn has lowest round at Eisenhower

N

ew Zealand finished well off the pace at the Eisenhower Trophy in Japan but Manawatu golfer Joshua Munn provided an individual highlight when he posted the lowest round of the tournament. Munn scored a five-under par 67 on the final day of what is the world’s premier teams’ event for amateurs. Munn, 23, made six birdies and a bogey in his final round and was pleased to show what he was capable of. ``I got off to a really fast start, I was two-under par through three holes and this time I went on with it,” said Munn. ``I wasn’t hitting it too well off the tee but I took advantage of the birdie putts that I had. It was a momentum day and I managed to keep that up to the finish.” Munn, from the Manawatu Golf Club, was most pleased that he birdied the final two holes as he hadn’t been able to close out a good round on the first three

days of the tournament. ``The last couple of days I have been three-whacking [putting] the last which has been pretty painful so it was really good to birdie the last two and post a five under.” Munn said he would leave Japan with nothing but good memories. ``Our team gets on so well both on and off the course, we have all been really supportive of each other and I didn’t want this week to finish.” The New Zealand team finished in a share of 22nd place with a total of 15-under par. That was 23 shots back from the United States which held off Canada by two strokes to defend its title. New Zealand has won the Eisenhower Trophy once when the team of Phil Tataurangi, Michael Campbell, Stephen Scahill and Grant Moorhead were victorious in Canada in 1992.

Ko can still become youngest women major winner Lydia Ko didn’t become the world’s youngest to win a golf major but she still went home $US78,000 ($NZ95,000) richer after finishing eighth in the Evian Championship in France. The Evian was Ko’s last chance to break the 146-year-old record that belongs to Tom Morris junior as the world’s youngest major winner. He beat his

father to take out the 1868 British Open at the age of 17 years, five months and eight days. Ko, born on April 24, 1997, can still become the youngest women winner of a major with next year’s Evian Championship being her last opportunity. The youngest women major winner is Morgan Pressel of the United States. She achieved her

feat when taking out the 2007 Kraft Nabisco Championship in California at the age of 18 years, 10 months and nine days. Ko finished the Evian at fourunder par which was seven shots from the winner Hyo Joo Kim of South Korea. Kim, 19, beat Karrie Webb from Australia when she sank a 12-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole.

New season’s Jamie Sadock in store now

``This was the best nervous time ever,” Kim said. Ko never really got going in her final round. She made two birdies and two bogeys for an even-par round. She has now recorded 10 top-10 finishes in 2014, including two wins, in her maiden season on the LPGA Tour to earn $US1.3 million (NZ$1.6 million).

October 1 means daylight saving is already underway and twilight golf around the country accompanies it. It is, quite simply, the best time of year to play the game and it only gets better as we head into Christmas and our annual summer break. This summer is an exciting time for New Zealand Golf for many reasons. Last month, we launched our Casual Golf Initiative. I believe this concept has the potential to be a gamechanger for golfers and clubs around New Zealand. Casual golf is something that many staff at New Zealand Golf have tried to nail over the past decade or so without getting it quite right. We believe that our casual golf initiative, which was launched on September 15, will change that. Golf is famous for being the number one participation sport in New Zealand. We have around 120,000 members and approximately 350,000 Kiwis who play golf on a casual basis. We, as the governing body, know very little about the casual golfer and that means that we cannot, or help our clubs, have meaningful communication with this group of golfers. The concept is that golf clubs and New Zealand Golf will encourage all golfers in New Zealand to register to play golf at our clubs. Through a one time and free registration process, the contact details and future playing habits of all casual golfers in New Zealand will be

captured. As a result, a database of registered golfers in New Zealand will be obtained enabling New Zealand Golf and golf clubs to create a unique marketing channel that promotes green fees and membership products from all golf clubs to all golfers in New Zealand. The casual golfer will receive benefits by becoming registered on the national database. The golfing sector will be able to start the process of leveraging this growing market to supplement current revenue streams. It has been a few weeks now since September 15 and the response has been great. But this process is only as good as the golf clubs around the country which control the registration process. I encourage clubs to obtain this information. It is in the interest of everyone in the golf community to know more about these players and see how we can further engage them in the game. The future of golf is not just the responsibility of the golf club managers or the governing body but all of us as golf club members. We all need to grow and support the game together. Our LOVE Golf campaign has been met with widespread approval across New Zealand and we are only just scratching the surface of its potential. One of the aspects of LOVE Golf that has been well received is the memberget-member campaign.

Tewantin Noosa Golf Club

The statistics show us that 8 out of 10 members join a golf club through a friend or family member. Think about how you started the game and I bet you probably began playing golf through someone you know. You might never have played this game that you love without their influence. Now it is your turn. If you encourage someone to join a golf club you not only go into the monthly draw to win some great Puma golf gear but you also have a chance to play in the New Zealand Open in Queenstown next year. There is plenty to be excited about. Golf is a game that is better with friends and we are sure that the casual golf initiative and the love golf campaign can have a real impact in securing a bright future. That future starts now. Resident Pro at Chisholm Park, Dunedin

Introduce someone new to golf D

aylight saving is now here and we are enjoying longer days and warmer weather. Hopefully it will also be drier. So let’s get out and start playing more golf. My request to all golfers this summer is to take a friend or family member to the golf course or driving range. Why? So they can learn to love the game the way you do. They will quickly understand the challenge of golf, meet new people and love being outside enjoying the environment. Who doesn’t love being out on the golf course. My first round of the year was with my son, my best mate and his son at Mount Maunganui in Tauranga. My friend and I achieved something we had dreamed about in 1988 when we were young, that one day we would love to play golf with our own sons. To me that was extremely special. My next goal over the summer is to get my family out playing golf. The golf course is not their favourite place to be as my life revolves around it. It’s the place where “dad is always busy” and some-

times where my 16-year-old son and 13-year-old daughter have to help out and work (and yes, they get paid). Besides “golf is boring.” My son used to say that and none of his friends played. But now, fortunately, he has a couple of buddies playing and enjoys hanging out with them at the golf course. The next step to achieving this goal is to get my wife, son and daughter out to play six or 9-holes together one even-

ing. This would be my dream foursome. On Father’s Day, I got part of my wish as my wife, son and daughter spent the day with me on the course hitting golf balls. It was a lot of fun and a successful day as they all hit enough good shots for them to want to do it again. The key to golf is to see it as fun and as a game to enjoy. Please do yourself and your friend or family member a favour and have them take a lesson to learn the basics the right way. Plus it is much easi-

er taking instruction from someone they don’t know. My wife jokes that she got most of her lessons when we were dating. I must have done something right as she still remembers the lesson tips from 18 years ago. Golf is great way to get away from life, technology and cell phones and to get in a good walk. Golf does not always have to be 18-holes but can be a pleasurable way to spend 90-minutes playing six or seven holes. If you are introducing someone new to the game, try playing alternate shots or ambrose. This way you keep moving as you go around the course, as your friend will not want to take 4 or 5 shots to your one. The key ingredient is to “make it fun”. Remember, taking a new golfer to the golf course for 18 holes is like taking a new runner and entering them into a half-marathon. My question to you is who would you like to introduce to golf and why would that be special? Think about how they could enjoy the game and what tips and advice you would share with them to help them enjoy something you love.

’ve written before about the strong influence of migrating Scottish professionals on the game in this country. One who deserves more recognition is Edward Simpson Douglas, who must have been one of the most travelled of his generation, and who led a remarkable life both in and out of golf. Born in the north-eastern Scottish town of Nairn in 1885, Ted Douglas initially worked as a caddy, but must have found this hard going as records show him employed by the Great Western Railway in London in 1906. He still kept his hand in at golf, finishing 15th in the 2nd Scottish PGA Championship in 1908. That year his travelling in earnest started when he sailed to San Francisco where he stayed for five years working at the Presidio and Menlo Park Golf clubs. Douglas then headed for New Zealand and arrived in Wellington in July 1913 and immediately issued a challenge to any other professional to play for £25 over 36 holes, the equivalent of over $4000 in today’s money. Whether anyone took him up is unclear, but a few months later he was in Dunedin on October 15, as one of the 14 founding members of the Professional Golfers’ Association of New Zealand signing in as “ E S Douglas – Nelson”. He won the 1913 New Zealand Open at Balmacewan, and successfully defended it the next year at Middlemore in Auckland. He seems to have moved clubs quite frequently in those early years, being variously attached to Karori (Wellington), Nelson (twice), Wanganui and Miramar (Wellington). World War 1 then intervened, and Douglas served in France for three years as a rifleman in the NZEF. He no doubt saw plenty of action during that time, although details are sparse. The Miramar Golf Club kept his job open while he was away, and in 1919 he won his third NZ Open at Napier, adding a fourth in 1921 at Christchurch, where he was also successful in the 2nd NZ PGA Championship. After a short stint at Masterton, the travel bug then took over again and Douglas returned to the United Kingdom where he was the pro-

fessional at Robin Hood Golf Club in Solihull for six years. By 1928, he was back in New Zealand and eventually moved to Dunedin where he was the resident professional at the Otago Golf Club from 1931 until he retired in 1942. He came close to a fifth NZ Open title, losing in a playoff to Ernie Moss at Titirangi in Auckland in 1933, but managed to add a second PGA Championship in 1937 at St Andrews in Hamilton. His latter years saw him living in Masterton again before moving to Eastbourne, Wellington, where he died in 1956. Described as “a softly spoken Scottish gentleman, and a pretty good golfer too”, Douglas was noted for “a terrific long game, but a poor putter”. Goodness knows how many titles he would have won if he’d been stronger in that department and hadn’t had World War 1 to contend with. But what is clear is he made a huge contribution to many golf clubs in this country and to the PGA itself. This has also been recognised in his home town of Nairn, where he is lauded as one of the two best players ever to have been produced by the Nairn Dunbar Club. They even have a special green fee rate of £19.21 (normally £55.00) for all affiliated New Zealand golf club members, commemorating Douglas’s 1921 NZ Open/ PGA Championship double. If you are planning a trip to Scotland, why not take advantage of that and also play the other great championship courses in the Scottish north-east such as Royal Aberdeen, Cruden Bay, Nairn, Castle Stuart and Royal Dornoch. Who knows, some of the Douglas magic may rub off, but either way you will be in for one of the greatest golfing road trips of the world, as well as paying homage to an outstanding Scottish-New Zealand golf professional.

ocial media author, trainer and content creator Linda Coles addressed the GMANZ conference promoting the benefits of social media as a credible marketing tool. She encouraged Golf delegates to consider face book marketing, Google location maps for Golf Club destinations, and to embrace social media as an online magazine for club news and offers. “Google advertising can be very

powerful, by targeting prospective customers cost effectively” (Excerpt from Website) People buy from people they know, like and trust, so get to know more people! “Golf Clubs are in the hope and belonging business”

- Martin Grunstein

I

n a highly entertaining and thought-proving session, Martin Grunstein from Success Communications challenged Golf Clubs to position their offers beyond selling Golf rounds and memberships. “Modern business practice is that the consumer is making decisions about Leisure activity and purchasing decisions,” he said. “Golf Clubs that sell their products and services on price alone are doomed to fail.” “Over the past 20 years there has been a fundamental shift in decision-making processes. Women have become more assertive around decision-making and with family commitments men have a guilt factor in playing golf.” Martin Grunstein used numerous industry and personal

experiences in his address to illustrate problems and solutions with relevance to the Golf industry. Grunstein went on to say, “Golf Clubs need to offer

a sense of belonging for their members, from customer service and golf products, to the facilities on offer.” One tactic he offered was a 90-day risk free trial on all members signing up. Selling “hope” he suggested, was key. For example, for a Golf personnel working with a high handicapper, who is not enjoying his or her golf and who maybe considering terminating their membership: the hope of improving their handicap may be the difference between retaining income and losing that member forever. He also advocated using member testimonials as a promotional tool in marketing to new members. » For more info email martin@ martingrunstein.com.au

Respected Mount Maunganui Golf Administrator retires

A

fter a stint of 13 years Brian Jopson has decided to retire from his Manager’s role at Mount Maunganui. He was recently recognised for his contribution to golf at the GMANZ conference Dinner, held in Auckland. Golf for Brian Jopson has been a passion for almost 50 years and achieving representative honours for Poverty Bay at Provincial level in the late 80’s has been his personal golfing highlight. Brian started playing the game in Waipukurau. He had 23 years in the Menswear trade, then moved into the Moteling industry for nearly to 10 years with his wife Dianne and family. In 1987 the Gisborne Boys High School team won the NZ Secondary schools Tournament. As a result of this win, Brian and another father of the boys were instrumental in raising over $27,000 to send the team to St Andrews in Scotland to compete in the World Secondary Schools tournament. This was no mean feat in Gisborne at the time, but the support generated from the Poverty Bay golfers made the job very rewarding. Due to Brian’s involvement in the Poverty Bay Golf Club he was selected by the club to attend the 2nd Bi-Annual NZ Golf Conference in Wellington when these were run and organised under the auspice of NZ Golf. It was during this Conference that Brian realised that golf/sports adminis-

tration was a career path he would like to pursue. Returning from the conference Brian decided to pursue this new career direction. In October 1994, Brian was appointed manager of the Cambridge Golf Club and so Brian and Dianne moved to Cambridge. At Cambridge Brian was instrumental along with Steven Dally (at that time convenor of the BoP Open in Whakatane) in getting 4 golfers from the Australian Institute of Sport to play in both the Cambridge Classic and the BoP Open. Brian was honoured at this time to have met the late Ross Herbert (Golf Coach AIS) and with Ross, organising each year’s plans for him and his team. Three of Ross’s players Adam Crawford, Brad Lamb & Scott Gardiner have competed in Pro tournaments around the world with Scotty still playing on the US PGA Tour. Also while at Cambridge Brian assisted the club in negotiating with Council the use of land to the west side of the course so the club could develop three new holes and relieve land around the clubhouse for a practice facility. In 1997 Brian accepted a role at Te Puke. During Brian’s tenure at Te Puke he continued to develop and in those days, managers were more involved in the running the day to day golf activities of the club. This is something Brian did enjoy and as well as actively playing in the club’s Championship pennant team.

and the challenges of a club like Mt Maunganui. Brian has held the position at Mt Maunganui for almost 13 years and is also proud of what he has achieved in this time. Coming to Mt Maunganui Golf Club was a major step in Brian’s Golf Management career, with in recent times, being more focus on managing the club than directly involved with golf operations. He has managed the club through some difficult financial times, which he is proud of, and also steered the club into the electronic age of golf. Brian’s most satisfying and rewarding achievement at the Mount is the tournament control and hosting of the very popular Eves 5 Course Classic, a tournament which he has been involved in for 17 of its 19 years. Through his 20 years in Golf Management, Brian has managed clubs through three different handicap systems and seen first-hand the change from manual handicapping to electronic and website based systems. Brian has been associated with; 3 NZ Men’s Amateurs, 2 NZ Women’s Amateur 1 Men’s interprovincial, Asia Pacific Seniors Championship and the tribute tour for Sir Bob Charles Brian and Dianne plan to retire back in Gisborne and spend more time catching up with family, with an overseas adventure on the plans in 2015.

While at Te Puke, Brian was asked to join the Eagles Golfing Society, which he accepted with honour and also during this time he was secretary of the BOP Golf Managers for four years and supported the amalgamation with Waikato. Cambridge and Te Puke were stepping stones for Brian as this assisted him to get the experience to handle a bigger role

The tale of the Sumo wrestler WORDS Tracey-Lea Tiley

T

he fragility and delicate beauty of the Sakura (cherry blossom) lies in direct contrast to the thunderous stamp of a Sumo wrestler. Perhaps it is deliberate that the cherry blossom does not bloom during Sumo tournaments... Have you ever wondered what it would be like to step inside the life of a Sumo wrestler or rikishi. Each wrestler belongs to a stable or beya, much like a race horse which is managed by a retired wrestler and they join the stable traditionally when they are quite young to commence grooming. Currently there are 54 stables and within the stables live the match referees, ushers and even the hairdressers! Within Sumo wrestling you’ll find that like boxing, there are various divisions of fighters starting at the pinnacle of the sport with the makuuchi and juryo, below them are the makushita, sandanme, jonidan and jonokuchi but it is not until the Sumo reach the status of juryo that they begin attracting a salary. Lower ranked rikishi earn as little as $4,200 per year whilst grand champions can earn up to $285,000 per year and are treated like rock stars. From this time when they reach the upper levels of status, the Sumo are well supported in the beya (stable) and have a team that monitor their training and diet. Wrestlers at this level can be differentiated by the colourful apronlike cloth called a keshomawashi that depicts their stable; and the topknot worn on their head is made to reflect the leaf of a ginko tree. Sounds harmless doesn’t it? But

having personally been to a wrestling bout I can assure you that once the formality of the scene has been set the wrestlers move with astounding power and ferocity. Such detailed preparation for what seemed like a nano second in the ring but is exhilarating to watch. Bouts are fought in a circular ring made with rice-straw bales on a top of clay platform called a dohyo and can be traced back

to the late 1600’s. Wrestler’s names are selected traditionally by their stable master. From the time they wake at 5am the unranked wrestlers commence their training in the practice ring, some of the training includes a ritual stamping called shiko which is designed to strengthen lower body power. This is achieved by squatting and then lifting one leg out and then alternating and when you join Go Golfing Travel’s

tour to Japan next March you will have the opportunity to do just that. Can you believe that someone of such bulk can be so flexible? The Sumo work on this flexibility by engaging in the splits and then bending forward till their chest touches the floor. Ouch! This move is called Matawari. You are probably wondering what fuels a man of this immense mass... The wrestlers eat chanko which is prepared by the young members of the beya and includes stews, Chinese food, sashimi and deedfried food. Sumo’s traditionally eat twice daily at 11am and 6pm and of course the higher ranked wrestlers eat first and shower first and then there’s plenty of sleeping all in the name of building their considerable size. Younger rikishi are responsible for cleaning the beya including sweeping and cleaning. These younger Sumo are called Tsukebito or attendants. When you join Go Golfing you won’t be the Tsukebito, you’ll be treated like a Makuuchi wrestler of the highest order. Go Golfing host a golf tour to Japan leaving March 2015 – don’t miss out on early bird pricing with golfer entry from $8,695 per person twin share before 30 October 2014. >> Australian RRP/prices: Japanese Spring Tour 28 March – 11 April 2015; Golfer Package From $8,695 Per Person Twin Share, Non Golfer Package From $8,280 Before 30 October 2014. >> More information can be found at www. gogolfing.net.au.

MCKEOWN WINS AT WAITANGI By Michael Macdonald

Waipu golfer Chase McKeown has returned to the winners circle in emphatic fashion, leading from start to finish at the Titleist-Footjoy Bay of Islands Stroke Play at Waitangi on Saturday. For the 20 year-old McKeown it was a welcome return to form with the representative season just around the corner. A regular in the Northland side over the past couple of seasons McKeown had endured a rollercoaster year to date which had seen him struggle to back up some good starts – until Saturday that is. In superb playing conditions McKeown got off to a flying start with an opening round of six under par 66. The round featured seven birdies and a solitary bogey to give him a four shot buffer heading in to the afternoon’s final round. In the chasing pack was current Northland number one Kadin Neho (70) with a further shot back to Kerikeri golfer Alex Neely (71) and long-time Northland representative Bob Shirley (71). A stiff breeze made scoring difficult in the afternoon, Saali Herewini (Whangarei) the only player to go under par with a

round of 71 moving him into second place. Kerikeri junior Taylor Gill and Scott Wilson (Waitangi) were the next best with afternoon rounds of even par 72 that moved them both inside the top ten. Importantly though McKeown followed up his hot start with a respectable 73 in the tricky afternoon conditions to extend his lead and eventually claim a comfortable six shot win. With the final senior trial event for 2014 now complete selectors will now have some tough decisions to make particularly when it comes to the playing order of the side. The eight man team to contest the Garrard Shield against Auckland, Bay of Plenty and Waikato at Kerikeri from 17-19 October is due to be confirmed in the next week.

EAGLES V JUNIORS The Northland Eagles Society and the Golf Northland Junior Academy fought out a 9.5 all draw in their annual challenge at Whangarei Golf Club last month. Having won the challenge for the first time in nine years in 2013 the juniors were keen to hold on to the trophy for a second straight year. In preparation the Junior Academy side held their monthly squad training at Whangarei Golf Club the preceding day prior to last month’s event, Ady McKenzie putting them through their paces with a nutrition and strength and conditioning

session educating players on how both elements are linked to player performance. The players then spent some time getting to know the course and some its more strategic holes. The five girls playing first had the juniors slightly in front early with a 3-2 advantage. The Eagles men however overturned the slight deficit winning 7.5-6.5 to leave the match deadlocked. The Eagles Society are fantastic supports of junior golf in the Northland area and the annual challenge offers a chance for it’s members to compete and get to know some of the young players coming through the ranks of Northland golf, passing on some of their knowledge in the process. Outside of junior golf the Eagles are also big supporters of the Halberg Trust. Golf Northland wish to pass on their thanks to the Eagles Society for the continued support to both causes.

GOLF TRAILS available to help offset the cost of a professional tournament director for the tournament, which will be held over three days, i.e. 27 holes, and open to men and women aged over 40 years. About 200 golfers from across New Zealand and possibly overseas are expected to converge upon Kerikeri for this year’s inaugural tournament, with the series being played on stableford points with age and handicap divisions. Far North Mayor John Carter said the tournament was in keeping with the district council’s policy to encourage the development of events that bring visitors to the north and generate economic benefits across the local economy. “These people are going to be in the Far North for a minimum of three days and possibly for longer. It provides a great opportunity to showcase the district and encourage longer stays before and after the actual event and also to encourage return visits to the district whether for business or pleasure,” said Carter. The BOIKGC, which has hosted a number of other national events in the past — including the 1995 Freyberg Masters men’s tournament, the 1998 Women’s Interprovincial Tournament and the 2007 women’s masters tournament — is now working on a three-year programme for the new 9-hole masters nationals. BOIKGC president Maurice Penney noted the tournament was designed to cater to the increasing demand for the less strenuous 9-hole golf format, not only among the aging demographics of the golfing population, but also among those who have less

free time for the 18-hole version of the game. Penney said the club was hoping to capitalise on a growth in player numbers in these higher age groups by providing this championship. “We would like to think that our guests will get a positive taste for the whole of Northland region while they are here and it is pleasing that this has been recognised by the support received from the local community board.”

NORTHLAND REAL ESTATE SPRING STROKE PLAY Watch the sunrise before you tee off!! The 54 hole Spring Stroke play tournament was started in 2002 to host the players who did not make the cut for the Waipu Golf Club’s elite Bream Bay Classic. Played off the Blue Tees, a mid-distance course, this nett tournament is open to all players with a maximum handicap index of 24.7 A long list of sponsors means that this year’s event, set for the weekend 11th & 12th October, should attract a strong field and following a long wet winter the good grass cover together with dry conditions underfoot should exceed all players expectations. The players will receive their Saturday evening meal and for those with luck on their side there will be spot prizes and giveaways. With a practice round on Friday and plenty of local accommodation available (check our website for details) this is a weekend not to be missed. The clubhouse café is open daily for meals and visitors and spectators are always made

welcome to enjoy great views and congenial hospitality. Entry forms are available on the website: www.waipugolfclub.org.nz or by contacting the clubhouse: Email: Waipu@golf.co.nz, phone: 09 4320259

TREE-MENDOUS EFFORT BY WARKWORTH VOLUNTEERS The last logs left the property back in April and the changes to the course will be everlasting. Approximately 1400 ton of pine trees were commercially logged during the summer months and what’s left is a outstandingly picturesque landscape. “We’ve always been proud of what we have here, “ says General Manager Mike Reid, “ and with the pine trees gone the whole place looks fantastic.... Apart from a few ’battle scares’ the course has recovered quickly from the heavy machinery and tree fall damage, this is mostly due to the team of volunteers that have worked tirelessly to present the course in the best possible condition. Warwkorth Golf Club is really worth the visit, the 5700m course is set on 41ha of gently rolling landscape with carpet grass fairways, water features and Trees! Just 35min drive north of the bridge on the Matakana—Omaha Road.

READY FOR WAIPU TWILIGHT Twilight golf will be starting in October at Waipu Golf Club. This caters for casuals and regulars on Wednesday evenings with a teams event run at the same time. Anyone interested in being in a team or just joining in while passing through should contact

the clubhouse for more information on (09) 432 0259.

WINNERS AT WAIPU The ladies stroke play champs at Waipu Golf Club this month were Senior Kylie Jacoby and bronze 1 Margaret Pennington with lady president Betty Johns. Waipu Golf Club also won the Mens Championship Pennant recently with the team of Braden Keown, Sheldon Kearns, Paul Jenkins and Chase McKeown. After two wins in the morning and two wins in the afternoon Waipu and Whangarei were tied. Chase McKeown had to play sudden death against Christian Nitsche. It took then 3 holes of amazing golf and Chase won on the 18th!

FATHER AND DAUGHTER TAKE OUT CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP Last year Kohai and Brooke Kingi won the club match play champs at Whangaroa Golf Club, and this year they have taken out their respective divisions in the club stroke play, Kohai the Senior mens and Brooke the ladies Silver division, another club first. MASSEY HIGH SCHOOL WIN Well done to Masset High School who have won the 2014 Secondary Schools Championship. Despite a late charge from defending the champions Whangarei Boys High School the team was able to win the event by 3 shots. The players were Tadhg Campbell (Muriwai), Jake Meenhorst (Huapai), Kevin Koong (Huapai) and Jake Lee (Huapai). Of note in the second round was the amazing play of Jake Meenhorst who birdied the last 5 holes to ensure the team victory. Well done guys!

SENIORS/MASTERS CHAMPS The 2014 North Harbour Seniors/Masters Championship was held at Helensville, Huapai and Muriwai Golf Club from the 29th to 31st August with a capacity field of 100 players including a waiting list. It was a brutal three days for the players with wind and rain making things essentially a survival test. The Senior (50+) was won by Tony “Turbo” Treen (Titirangi) shooting 240 for the three rounds to win by 2 shots. Rowland Griffiths (North Shore) won the net competition for the over 50’s. However the difficult condition were handled best by Mike Leeper (Omaha) who won the Masters (4049) division with a three round total of 223, good enough for a 10 shot win over Rob Simmonds (Muriwai). Congratulation to all that braved the conditions and completed all three rounds and to the sponsors TaylorMade Golf Pacific and Nobilo Wines who supplied all the prizes!

GOLF TRAILS ing the boundaries of safety with his mates. The local golf course was his second home and it was there that he learned to love golf and to love working at his game. He would often take his clubs and bike across the hills to St Andrews to play on the courses there. Though the war interrupted his golf and his burgeoning career as a physical education teacher, he still managed to get in the odd game and his role as a PT instructor in the army kept his muscles toned and his skill-set of gymnastic and athletics extended. When he migrated to New Zealand, he taught in Hamilton. After time out to start a family and concentrate on a business venture, he eventually rose in the ranks of physical education teaching through gaining a huge reputation while at Whakatane High School and moving on through the Secondary Schools Inspectorate to become Senior Inspector in charge of Physical Education for New Zealand. All this while, he had continued to pursue other interests, particularly in music and he performed regularly as an accompanist and member of a dance band for many years. At Whakatane, Joe played off a low handicap (usually around 2) and was instrumental in developing the game for younger players, working with the local professional. Back in Hamilton where his career took him, Joe was an active member of the Lochiel Club, though many of his weekends were spent at Whangamata, where his section backed on to the 9-hole Williamson Course. Retirement was always going to be at Whangamata and he soon became a legend for his fine play and good company. He was

a regular member of the club’s Senior Pennant team and was Club Champion in 1992 He found time to coach many players (he even spent time with a young Phil Tataurangi) on Whangamata’s Titoki Course in the days when the greens were fenced and the sheep helped to keep the fairway grass trimmed. Joe played his age or better no fewer than 125 times, the last time at age 85, and had a hole in one five times. As well, he was an active member of his church (often the organist) and was the leading light in the Whangamata Singers. He made a huge contribution to the fund-raising and the logistics of providing Whangamata with its new community hall. Joe passed away in August, and the golf club, the town and his friends will miss his energetic efforts.

There was six two’s on the day from Rob Colley, Tim Neill, Roger Verry, Allan Wiles, and taking out the jackpot was Paul Wood with two’s on 11 and 16, 2 balls each plus an extra 20 for Paul.

Yellow Ball Competition was played in teams of four at Matamata Golf Club, rotating the pesky yellow ball on each hole; two teams came up with total scores of 185, so a play off on the 18th was required. Amarjit Singh and Smithy where nominated from either team, armed with a yellow ball each it became a quite tense affair. Amarjit had tree issues which made it pretty tough for his team. Smithy confidently smashed his second to the green then three putted for the win. Congratulations to Smithy, Tim Neill, Lyall Wilson, and Paul Wood. KAWERAU GOLF CLUB BACK TO BACK CHAMPIONS Kawerau Golf Club prevailed to win the annual inter 5 club Golf challenge, for the 2nd successive year. The event played last month at Whakatane Golf Club saw 119 competitors representing 5 clubs. The participating Golf clubs were Ohope, Opotiki, Kawerau, TeTeko, and Whakatane. A mixed teams event consisting of 12 men and 8 women from each club is scored on 9 men, 6 women whose scores to count as aggregate stableford. The women’s team scores revealed that true to usual expectations, the home club prevailed with Whakatane’s team aggregate of 211 pts topping the list ahead of Ohope with 201 followed by Kawerau 195, then Opotiki 190 and Te Teko 185. In the mens section though, tradition

went out the door, with Kawerau leading with 345 pts, Ohope next with 330, then Opotiki 307, Whakatane 306 and Te Teko 298. With the points combined this meant that Kawerau Golf Club were the winning “Best in the Bay” with a grand total of 540 pts, followed by Ohope on 531, then host club Whakatane 517, Opotiki 497 and Te Teko 483. Club Captain of Kawerau, Willy Copeland in accepting the trophy, thanked all his team members for their great contribution, he especially thanked the participating players from all the clubs for their part in making for a tremendously enjoyable tournament and he was most appreciative of the sponsorship of the Golfer Gazette for their generosity in providing the team prize. While Kawerau can again bask in the glory of their success for 2 years running, the challenge will now move on to Ohope Golf Club as the 2015 hosts. Golfer Pacific NZ sponsored the 2014 event.

MIXED FOURSOMES AT MT MAUNGANUI One of the Mixed Foursome tournaments to have stood the test of time is the Mount Maunganui Golf Club 72 Hole Mixed Foursomes. Held each year on one of the top NZ Club Golf Courses, with its excellent fairways, fast greens and majestic clubhouse in the sunny Bay of Plenty, the 2014 tournament is their 24th Mixed Foursomes Tournament, and will be held on November 1 and 2. Naming sponsor, long serving “Pacific Coast Village” has supported the tourna-

ment and helped guarantee its continuation. 2014 will see Pacific Coast Village (Manager Bruce Flemming) joined by a co-sponsor – Ebony Fashions plus a new support sponsor, Sheaff Vehicles Ltd. Many are regular followers who have attended the tournament for a number of years to renew acquaintances and the rivalry. Tournaments to date have seen many hotly contested match-ups for the main trophy and also across the divisions. The “Pacific Coast Village” pair, Mike & Laurel Flattery (Mike a past manager of Pacific Coast Village) winning in the Trophy in 2012 & 2013. An impressive number of from other centres return each year to enjoy the camaraderie, the competition and the many tight matches. GOLF TRAILS an immaculately prepared and presented course saw all players have to contend with three very different seasons, from calm and fine to windy cold and wet and back to fine again, this in addition to their match opponent. Experience and good golfing skills proving the difference in many of the matches. Highlights of the 2014 championships were: -The return of Owen Kendall to winning the Senior Championship, last won in 2010. -Kate Davison winning the Women’s Silver division for the 3rd consecutive time. -Another solid performance by Trevor Campbell to win the Men Vet’s Championship -A nail-biting close and competitive match between Jan Payne and Joy Greer in the Women’s Bronze 1, a seesaw match throughout the 36 holes, for a result 2 & 1 on the 35th hole. Jan Payne winning. - A great performance by 80 year old Robert Lunn, playing a much younger opponent, to finish runner-up on the 36 hole Men’s Intermediate Division. Leading 1 up for the first 18 holes, backing off to be 2 down by the 30th hole making a fight back to be all square playing the 18th only to lose on the 36th hole 1 down. An excellent spectator force, despite the cold wet weather for part of the afternoon, were treated to some very competitive golf and close matches with nail biting conclusions.

BAY HARBOUR REPRESENTATIVE GOLF Bay of Plenty held on to the Bay Harbour Trophy by the narrowest of margins. Their annual fixture against North Harbour was played at Hamilton’s St Andrews course last month. The format for this fixture is medal matchplay where each player went 18 holes in cross-over pairs and against the opposition with 8 seniors, 4 under 19’s and 4 under 16 players and it was at the top of the order which proved to be the difference with both Number 1 Charlie Hillier (Te Puke) and Number 2 Hayden Beard (Mt.Maunganui) both securing two wins over their opposition.

The Bay selectors chose to rest stalwarts Sam Davis and Landyn Edwards and promoted age group players Bailey Smith, Henry Spring, Tyler King and Harry Hillier into the senior team with King securing 2 wins and Hillier a win and a vital half with a brilliant birdie on the tricky 18th hole at St.Andrews. Of the juniors Keegan Wiltshier (Omanu) and Con Ten Cate (Tauranga) also secured two wins in their debut appearances.

INTERCLUB RIVALRY IS ALIVE AND STRONG The Mount Maunganui and Omanui Interclub Challenge was played in perfectly fine and calm weather and with excellent course condition and presentation on Sunday, September 7. There was an excellent turnout of 93 players, from the two clubs, set out to see which club would reign supreme on the day made for golf. Omanu fielded a team of 53 players and the host club, the Mount, team totalled 40 players. Leading scores in each of the women and men divisions were very good all setting up for a very close competition for the club challenge and for the individual prizes. Mount Maunganui women and men leading scores were in the 40’s whole the visitors, Omanu were slightly behind – the pace of the greens probably having an influence. Mount Maunganui Golf Club leading women scores were by June Bentley (42), Kate Davidson (41) and Helen Tomson (38) – while leading men scores were Paul Kim (43) Dennis Noble (43), Eric McPherson (40 and Paul Shaw (40). Omanu Golf Club leading women scores were Kath Wineera (36), Wendy Brown (35), Dianne Chadwick (35) and Maree Southall (35).Leading men scores of 39 were Wayne Rasmussen, Peter Tipler, Fabian McLeod, and Dave Wilkins. Three others, including the Club President, Barry Keast, Mike Antrobus, Norm Thompson and Marnie Wineera scored 37 points. A most enjoyable day for golf and the Interclub camaraderie on and off the course. Great to finish in the sunlight.

GOLF TRAILS north of Tauranga just off State Highway 2. Overlooking the Tauranga harbour and overlooked by the beautiful Kaimai Range, Omokoroa is a level course and has its hidden difficulties. The course measures 5690 metres off the white tees and 5180 off yellow. The sand based greens are large, fast and run true. Not too many bunkers but strategically placed. Plenty of water to be avoided in both creek and pond. A fair test of golf to all standards of golfer. The SBS Bank is Omokoroa Golf Clubs major sponsor for this tournament, and with many more sponsors getting on board, it is promising to be the senior event to look forward to this year. Hayward turning pro STORY: Taranaki Daily News

The 23-year-old is heading to Melbourne in December where he will tee up in the Australasian Tour qualifying school at the Sandhurst course. The Australasian Tour is his first goal, with the One-Asia Tour the next. Hayward’s last tournament as an amateur will be playing for Taranaki at the annual interprovincial men’s teams’ event at the St Andrew’s course in Hamilton in early December. “It’s just that time to have a crack. I don’t

want to get too old,” he said yesterday before heading on on his home course, Ngamotu, for some practice. “It’s not that I’m sick of amateur golf. I just want to try to make some money out of it.” Hayward, who has been Taranaki No 1 since 2009, was under no illusions as to just how difficult it would be to qualify for the pro ranks. “It’s a whole different ball game. The pressure is there but it’s the right time. Obviously, you’re paying your own way, but it’s an opportunity for me to play overseas.” Hayward said the cost factor was a concern. “It’s $2000 just for the entry fee for the qualifying school, add on flights and accommodation and you’re down $5000 already. But when you’re playing, you don’t worry about that.” The plus side for Hayward was his job at the the New Plymouth airport was still open. “I’m lucky,” he said. “It’s an option for me. I can always come back and get some work. Not too many golfers have that option. It’s a good backup. I’m also training to be a rescue fireman at the airport.” Hayward said he would continue working at the check-in and as a baggage handler until December. “You have to make some money to play the game.” Hayward plays off a plus-three handicap – that means every round he plays he has to finish three under the card to play to his handicap. It’s those sort of scores he will need to produce week in, week out if he is to carve out a career as a pro. He certainly has what it takes to make it as a professional. At last year’s Taranaki Open on his home course, Hayward finished second with a 21-under-par total – just one shot behind the winner, Auckland pro Fraser Wilkin. His form has been just as good this year in 72-hole events. In a four-week spell, he had two seconds, a fifth and a win in the Cambridge Classic. “I’m hitting the ball well tee to green and lately I’ve been holing a lot of putts. Those 15-footers make a big difference. That’s where you can make up a lot of shots,” he said. “I know it won’t be easy as a pro, but it’s not supposed to be. I’m just looking forward to the challenge.” 

treated to a spectacular fashion show at Hastings Golf Club on 10 September. “It was a great evening, fun atmosphere and gave our members the opportunity to check out the latest fashions in golf – plus have a social night out,” says Brett Allan, event organiser and Hastings Pro. Hastings Golf Club and SpecialTee Golf organised ‘Fashion for the Fairways’ as a unique and memorable night out for their lady members. “This event was all about looking glam and sophisticated – both on and off the course!” says Brett. “We showcased up-tothe-minute fashion trends in golf attire – plus fashions for the high street. The feminine clothing that was on display was both contemporary and sophisticated.” Fashion in golf has evolved significantly in recent years. As a sport which is traditionally steeped in tradition, it has advanced from the ‘bulky and dated’ look to that of ‘comfortable and fashionable’ attire. “With high profile golfers as role models, such as Lydia Ko, the shift is more visible towards trendier and more fashionable golf outfits. It was marvellous that we could showcase the latest fashions in a fun night out,” says Brett. ‘Fashion for the Fairways’ was held in the clubhouse at Hastings Golf Club, overlooking their stunning course. Some lucky ladies walked away with some wonderful prizes, including hampers and hairdressing vouchers, donated by the event sponsors. Everyone also enjoyed a delicious meal thanks to the talented onsite chef at the club. Some ladies were even treated to a free makeover courtesy of LIFE Pharmacy.

“We made good sales on the night, and possibly even enticed a few new members to join the club!” says Brett. “The event was very successful for our club’s exposure in the community, and also giving our members the chance to have a fun night out.” Hastings Golf Club would like to thank their event sponsors; Milton Andrews Hairdressers, Trinity Hill Winery, Grande Gourmet, The Wellness Centre and LIFE Pharmacy. 

GOLF GOVERNANCE AT CASTLECLIFF At last month’s Castleciff AGM the meeting voted to do away with the board and committee structure and go back to the old-style executive, with the various subcommittees. Castleciff told Golfer Pacific “At the time we went the board/committee way it seemed a good idea – the board to look after governance and the committee the actual course but it never really worked. After a lot of discussion we decided it would be much better to have everyone involved in running the club, from president, secretary etc down, in the same room at the same time when we were making decisions.” The first meeting of the new executive was held recently and was rated a great success!

Jonathan said he missed three fairways from the tee but still managed to hit every green in regulation. “I had a lot of chances for a 59 but I was still quite happy with 62,” said Jonathan, adding it was his lowest score in a tournament. The win was Jonathan’s third so far this year in a Wellington order of merit tournament. A fortnight earlier he had won the Paraparaumu Open and in May he took out the Wairarapa Open. Jonathan is clear leader on the Wellington order or merit table and has established

himself as the No 1 player in Wellington. But at age 36, with a young family, he is not sure how much time he can commit to the game and, for example, play national events. “It depends on when they are and where they are. I’ll just have to see how it goes.” Jonathan, whose handicap index is projected at plus 2.7, only returned to golf about a year ago after having more than a decade on the sidelines. He was a top junior with wins in both the North Island and South Island boys? championships, won the 1999 Lawnmaster Classic at Palmerston North and represented New Zealand for six years from age 16. When asked what he put down his recent great form to he replied: “Old age.” The answer was in jest but he added there was more than grain of truth to it as well. “I wasn’t grown-up enough when I was playing full-time.”

CLUB CHAMPS AT KAPITI Nick Hayden and Adrienne MacMillan are the 2014 Kapiti Golf Club Champions. Played earlier this year, Nick raced out of the gate being 7 up after 18 holes before winning 10 and 8 against Steve Mason. Adrienne had a much tighter start against 2013 champion Mary Howard before winning 6 and 5. Jim Jones won the Intermediate over Sam Hayden 1 up. Jun- ior A was Peter Curran outlasting Gordon Scouler on the 37th hole. Bill Leach beat Peter Painter 3 and 2 for Junior B. Bronze 1 was Carol Train over Jan Hickey 7 and 6 and in Bronze 2 Sharon Willetts

beat Marita Laurenson 4 and 3. Jim Jones and Peter Curran have both won their division for the second time, while the rest have won their first club title. Congratulations to all.

INTERCLUB UPDATE For Kapiti Golf Club, the highlight of the 2014 Interclub season was the performance of our Division 5 team who won their division. A 15-0 win vs Otaki in the first round set up the season and they went into the last round knowing that 7 points were needed for the title and beat Te Marua 11-4. They did very well in away matches on the longer courses, and it was pleasing that players promoted into the team didn’t let the team down. Star player was Steve Barron who was unbeaten in both singles and four-ball over 9 rounds. Pictured are the Champion Div 5 Team: Steve Barron, Kyle Sergeant, Glen Walker, Steve Goodier, Warren Findlater, Front: Nick Hayden, Roger Watkin, Steve Mason, John Cosgrove, Paul Sainty. Division 8 had a much tougher season and were only 1/2 point ahead of relegation before the last round, but a 12-3 win against Judgeford did the job. Div 11 finished in a solid 5th place, once again devel- oping new players. Our Mary Alward/Tuakana team started poorly, but had a great last half of the season to finish third, just 2 points below the playoffs. Our Pennants team fin- ished mid table. Our 9 Hole Ladies had a very steady season, also finishing third, just 2.5 points from first. Evergreens are currently in mid table but sadly Mashie are currently in last place. 

GOLF TRAILS entry in the Sport and Recreation Section. An outfit called “Golf Goddess” was created. “A promotion of golf with a whimsical approach. A game that can make your hair curl and a birdie at the flat is the ultimate score. The bodice has been cut from lined Blackwatch tartan trousers, and the lining used to back an old nightshirt to from the train. An artificial grass skirt completes Ann Hill’s ensemble, which is set off with golfing accessories.”

NZ OPEN RETURNS TO QUEENSTOWN Next year’s New Zealand Open returns to Queenstown and the spectacular courses at The Hills and Millbrook Resort from March 12 to 15 2015 – and it’s looking set to be even bigger and better than ever. 2014 saw the introduction of a new format with the New Zealand Open running alongside a Pro-Am competition, signalling a year of firsts for the competition. The professional event, sanctioned by the PGA Tour of Australasia and with prize money of $900,000, was also the first time that the New Zealand Open partnered with the Japan Golf Tour Organisation (JGTO). Led by Japan’s Toshinori Muto and Hiroshi Iwata from the JGTO, a total of 15 leading professionals played in the New Zealand Open and there’s high hopes for a similar group of quality players again in 2015. The winner of next year’s tournament (or, if it’s won by an existing JGTO member, the leading non-exempt player) will be granted automatic entry into the 2015 Japan Golf Tour Championship and two further Japan Tour tournaments in 2015.

Could this be the year a Kiwi gets his hands once again on the New Zealand Open trophy? The last time a Kiwi got to raise the trophy was Mahal Pearce in 2003. The cause of optimism for a Kiwi winner in 2015 comes as many of New Zealand’s top talent show great form on the international stage. Two-time NZ PGA Champion Michael Hendry has been a steady performer on the Japan Golf Tour. Josh Geary’s been playing well on the PGA Tour of Australasia and has the best Kiwi pros record at the New Zealand Open in the past five years, and even Queenstown’s own resident champion Greg Turner is ready to give it another good shot. Wellington pro Mark Brown came agonisingly close in 2014 to securing the title, and other Kiwis right up up there with him on the leader board at various stages included Ryan Fox, David Klein, Kieran Muir, Richard Lee and – with huge support from the gallery – The Hills Golf Club professional Craig Palmer. With plenty of buzz already starting to build up around the 2015 event, tickets go on sale October 8. For more details go to www.nzopen.co.nz
