Things change – Sky’s no longer the limit
W
ould you watch golf on the internet? That’s a question many of us will be asking ourselves next year. For a number of years subscriber broadcaster Sky TV has delivered coverage of the PGA Tour in the United States on virtually a weekly basis. It has enabled Sky TV customers to become more familiar to the world’s best players on the world’s richest golf circuit. But all that ends in January. Sky has lost the PGA Tour rights to an internet-based provider Coliseum Sports Media. What this basically means is that instead of paying Sky to watch the PGA Tour, you’ll pay Coliseum. But the real question is will you pay someone else for coverage of one segment of one sport? Most of Sky’s sports subscribers are not clients just because the golf is on the telly. It’s because they also get rugby, rugby league,
soccer, tennis, cricket, horse racing, netball etc which is all rolled into one monthly fee. That has been Sky’s main attraction – live cover of all the main sports that matter most to New Zealanders. And oddly enough the PGA Tour has more significance for New Zealanders next year with Tim Wilkinson, Steve Alker and Danny Lee all qualified for the tour. It’s the first time for years that we’ve had three Kiwis on the tour. Then there’s Lydia Ko. It seems likely that Coliseum will also try to secure the rights for the LPGA Tour. That poses another question. Would the presence of Wilkinson, Alker, Lee and Ko be enough to convince you to subscribe to Coliseum? It has been reported that a monthly subscription for Coliseum’s golf coverage might be $15-$20 per month. Would you pay that? Coliseum last year secured the rights to
soccer’s English Premier League. That was a big blow to Sky. But I wonder how many converted to paying for it? I am interested in soccer but not enough to make a separate payment for it. That line of thinking may be the same when golf goes to Coliseum – at least initially. Things change over time and it’s the customer who will decide what good value is and what isn’t. It is interesting to note Sky has been signed up for next year’s New Zealand Open. There was no live television cover of this year’s open but it has become possible next year with increased government financial support. As I said earlier, things change. Also don’t be fooled into thinking that Coliseum’s golf coverage will be limited to a tiny computer screen. Modern television screens can display what we used to be the domain of the computer screen. Things change.

Mark Brown’s magic numbers of 26 and 59 I
t was the second-lowest score for nine holes in a professional golf tournament but in the end Mark Brown needed it to hang on for victory in the $40,000 Carrus Open in Tauranga. Brown had a second-nine total of 26 on the second day of the tournament at the Tauranga Golf Club which included seven birdies and an eagle. The record for the lowest score to par for nine holes belongs to Rhein Gibson from Australia which he achieved two years ago in the United States at the River Oaks Golf Club, Oklahoma. On that occasion Gibson also shot 26 but it represented a 10-under par. Brown’s score was nineunder par. Brown’s tally for the round ended up with golf’s magical number of 59 on a day when scoring flourished. Five players shot 65 and five others 66. Brown’s dream 11-under score was almost the result of a dream. “I woke up in the middle of the night and was thinking about a grip adjustment that I wanted to make with my putting stroke,’’ Brown recalled after the round. “It felt really good out there. I putted magnificently.” Brown, a former Wellingtonian now living in Tauranga, was high-fived and congratulated all the way back to the clubhouse by the spectators. “It is an awesome feeling,” he said. “I was saying yesterday how many days there are when you walk off the course frustrated or that you have left a few out there. “So to have the feeling where you have scored as well as you possibly can on every hole is a unique feeling, an amazing feeling. Especially to do it around here where I have a lot of friends, it is really special.” Brown hit his approaches to within 12 feet on his first four holes of his back nine and then to 20 feet on his fifth hole and made all the birdie putts in nonchalant fashion. On his sixth hole he made an eagle from 30 feet on the fringe of a par 5 and then delivered probably what was the shot of the day – a delicate bunker shot from a tricky lie on his seventh hole to within six inches. He then made a 20 foot putt on the next hole to continue his momentum and then a par on his 9th hole. “It would be hard to beat nine holes like that in pro golf. The guys are telling me it hasn’t been done before.” Brown’s playing partners Luke Toomey and Daniel Pearce were stunned. Said Pearce: “It was pretty damn impressive.
Luke and I enjoyed watching that a lot. It was some of the best golf that I have ever witnessed. That 10 hole stretch was flawless. His control was the most impressive thing. He never really looked flustered or out of place, he was just going about his business and it seemed easy.” Toomey added: “I have shot 65 today and I was completely blown away by his round. It was incredible and a pleasure to watch that. He is a world class player and he showed that today.” Brown’s 59 equalled the course record which was set by Auckland professional Richard Lee. “I had to match R Lee’s record today. I couldn’t let him get away with it. So I am glad that we share that one together.” Brown also thanked his girlfriend Mikayla Bell, a local golf professional, who caddied for him. “Mikayla really helped me today. We were walking up the last and I said to her we have got every club right and every read right today – that is half the battle. “Sometimes executing is the easy part but we teamed up really well, we picked good clubs and we picked good lines, everything was bang on.” Brown, 39, is no stranger to shooting low numbers. He famously carded a 10-under par 62 at Kingston Heath in Britain last year in final qualifying for the Open Championship. “I have had a couple of good rounds in my time but it is nice to have the magical number on my CV. It is obviously not the PGA Tour but it is still a massive achievement. It is more of a mental achievement to keep pushing under that pressure. I am pleased I took my chance.” Brown’s record breaking round was even more impressive considering he has hardly played and had been nursing a sore back in the lead-up to this event. He said the round will give him confidence as he looks to get back on the European Tour at the end of the year. “You feel the same nerves teeing off in a (New Zealand) Charles Tour event as you do playing anywhere in the world, well I do anyway. You feel like you are in tournament mode and that it matters.’’ But in the end Brown only got home by two shots as his lead was whittled back over the final two days. Second was Hawke’s Bay pro Doug Holloway, a five-time winner on the Charles Tour, who had rounds of 65, 64 and 65 over the final three days. One shot back third was Richard Lee. The win was Brown’s third on the Charles Tour. The previous two were the 2012 Carrus Open and the 2006 Taranaki Open.

Jenna Hunter scores by 12 at Tauranga A
uckland professional Jenna Hunter ended her drought on New Zealand’s professional golf circuit, the Charles Tour, in emphatic fashion. The South African-born Kiwi won the Carrus Open in Tauranga by the huge margin of 12 shots at the Tauranga Golf Club. Hunter, from North Shore, had rounds of 70, 71, 69 and 73 for a five-under par total. The 26-year-old had been a perennial contender on the Charles Tour and was delighted to finally win one. “It feels really good. It was nice knowing that I had a few shots in the bag but yeah it feels really good,’’ Hunter said. “I am glad that I have finally won.” Even though she began the day with a 13-shot lead, Hunter admitted to feeling nervous on the first tee. “There were nerves there but I don’t really know why,’’ she said. “It was such a big lead that it was almost like I don’t want to ruin it because it would be pretty embarrassing. So I just tried to keep focused and play par golf today.” Hunter made a birdie and a bogey on

the opening nine holes on the final day before enduring an up and down closing nine holes when she made four bogeys, a birdie and an eagle. She said the emphatic win would give her a huge amount of confidence as she built towards an attempt to qualify for women’s richest golf circuit, the LPGA Tour, in 2015.

Gillespie fifth in China Masters
W
ellington professional Nick Gillespie had his biggest pay day when finishing fifth in China Masters. Gillespie had rounds of 68, 68, 74 and 73 for a one-under par total at the Nanshan International Golf Club. Fifth was worth $US42,000 which is about $NZ54,000. Another Wellington professional, Gareth Paddison, was 11th in the same tournament but would have been disappointed with a final round four-over par 76 even though extremely windy conditions prevailed. Paddison picked up $US20,000 ($NZ26,000). Perth-based Kiwi Michael Long was tied for 28th, Brad Shilton was tied 50th, and Auckland professional Richard Lee saved his worst for last when he had a 10-over par 82 to finish 66th. The tournament was won by Li Hao-tong, of China, who became the youngest winner on the OneAsia Tour. The 19-year-old scored by four strokes after shooting a final round one-under-par 70.
6 GOLFER PACIFIC November 2014
The previous youngest winner had been Korean Kim Bi-o when took out the very same event in 2011 at age 20. “I think I am too young to win a Masters event,” joked Li, who finished the tournament on nine under and $US180,000 richer. “I could not stand sometimes when I was putting as the wind was so strong. I never played in wind like this.” With the wind gusting up to 40mph on some parts of the course, Li held his game together admirably. After making the turn he stumbled somewhat with a bogey on the 11th and a double bogey on the 12th that saw his lead cut to one. However, he showed his star qualities by making birdie on three of the last four holes. “I scored 100 points on those last few holes,” Li said. “It was really really windy. Before I went out I was worried about it as this is not an easy course,” said Lee.

NZ GOLF UPDATE
golf.co.nz
Dean Murphy
New Zealand Golf Chief Executive
All is in place for a successful NZ Open I
t has been an exciting couple of months for New Zealand Golf both on and off the golf course. Firstly off the course it was great to be at the launch of the BMW New Zealand Open as our premier golf event went to another level and became a tournament of real significance on the world stage. There were a number of great wins in this announcement as John Hart, Michael Glading and our organising team have done a fine job. The tournament, which is steeped in history dating back to 1907, re-aligned with a global golf brand in BMW Group which was a great endorsement for the world’s most unique national open. The announcement that gained the most traction in the media was the news that (with the help of Government funding) the event will be broadcast live both home and abroad. It is estimated that the tournament will reach around 200 million households and this was a key factor in achieving the goals of the major events investment fund and ultimately the objective of Tourism New Zealand of showcasing New Zealand as a premier golf destination. We all know that Queenstown is the jewel in the NZ tourism crown and the imagery of the mountains, lakes, wineries, adventure activity and golf will be priceless for, not only Queenstown, but the whole country.
The quality of the players coming to the championship is always talked about and the organising committee have done a superb job of boosting the purse to $NZ1 million, making it one of the most lucrative events in the tournament’s history.
all the best for the final stage of qualifying for the European Tour in December.
There have only been four New Zealand Opens which have offered larger purses (2002, 2005, 2006 and 2007), all at around $1.5m but all of those financial models proved unsustainable. This model is sustainable. The BMW New Zealand Open has a bright future. The aim for the event is to attract the best players from the Asia-Pacific region and also from further afield. One of the players sure to be back in Queenstown looking to win the title for the first time is Wellington professional Mark Brown. The 39-year-old had a moment to savour recently when he shot an incredible 11-under par 59 at the Carrus Open on the Charles Tour in Tauranga. He played his final 10 holes in 10-under par in a world class display to be only the second golfer from New Zealand to sign for golf’s magic number of less than 60. It was a great moment for one of golf’s good guys. We wish him
of golf.
Other performances of note in recent times were Ryan Fox and Thomas Campbell advancing to the second stage of Web.Com Tour Qualifying School and Lydia Ko’s continued success on the LPGA Tour. We are looking forward to seeing more Kiwis achieving success on the world stage in the rest of 2014 and into 2015. It has always proved a catalyst to getting more Kiwis into the game
The BMW New Zealand Open going live on TV around the country will have a similar impact. A home champion at the event would have a huge impact on the game. The championship has the same relevance today as it did back in 1907 and all of our leading professionals would love to claim the Brodie Breeze Trophy. If they do, then they know the world will be watching and they’ll be playing for money that could change their career. The BMW New Zealand Open has the lofty goal of being the most significant golf championship in the Asia-Pacific region and it has made some big strides in a short time. Well done to all involved.

ext year’s New Zealand Open will be broadcast live on pay television. The tournament went without live television this year but Sky Television has returned to the fray for next year’s event which will be held from March 12-15 in Queenstown at The Hills and Millbrook Resort courses. New Zealand technology company Animation Research Limited will lead the television production. The company is involved in golfing events around the world including the Ryder Cup, the PGA Championship, the Open Championship and all the events on the European Tour. Animation Research owner Ian Taylor said: “We look forward to incorporating our technology into a broadcast that will showcase the golf tournament, celebrity golfers on show, and also the incredible vistas of Queenstown.’’ Japan will also receive live television cover with the tournament having an alliance with Japan Golf Tour Organisation (JGTO). A total of 15 spaces will again be reserved for leading JGTO professionals. Prizemoney for the New Zealand Open has been increased from $850,000 to $1 million. The New Zealand government is also investing in the tournament. The minister for economic development, Steven Joyce, said the major events development fund would contribute $700,000

for each of the 2015 and 2016 events. The government would also make a one-off investment of up to $250,000 per year towards television production and distribution. This will be matched by Michael Hill Tournaments Limited, the event promoter, to ensure a live broadcast to a world-wide audience and to support wider commercial objectives. The tournament’s organising chairman John Hart valued the support of the government and jeweller Michael Hill amongst a number of others. “We very much appreciate the continued support the tournament has received from the government, locally from the Queenstown Lakes District Council, and from New Zealand Golf,’’ Hart said. “The introduction of live television has taken the event to a new level with increased investment and support from sponsors both here in New Zealand and offshore. “We welcome back and thank our existing family of sponsors Hilton Queenstown, Michael Hill, Milford Track Guided Walks and Rebel Sport. We also pay special tribute to Sir Michael Hill, with his ongoing personal commitment and underwrite support which has been fundamental to the event reaching this stage of its development.” The main naming rights sponsor is car

GOLF EVENT
A great experience on the West Coast T
he West Coast has a long golfing history and is proud to offer The West Coast Golf Challenge, a great experience for both local golfers and friends from ‘away’ – which is every part of the world that is not on ‘The Coast’. March 3rd to the 6th 2015 will be the 3rd edition of the West Coast Golf Challenge. It is a great opportunity to combine four rounds of golf on four quite different courses with the chance to experience some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. The four hosting clubs are Westport on their Kawatiri links at Carters’ Beach, Reefton on their Glenburnie course, Hokitika on their links course at Mahinapua, and Greymouth on their course at Kaiata. All of the courses will offer different challenges, from the links courses of Hokitika and Westport to the parklands layouts of Reefton and Greymouth, and all will be well prepared and presented. Good hospitality is guaranteed. This is the West Coast after all! Visitors are encouraged to take time either before, during or after the tournament to visit picturesque landmarks such as Denniston, Cape Foulwind, Charleston, Punakaiki, Oceana Gold mine, Lake Brunner,

Brunner Mine, Shantytown, Lake Kaniere, Hokitika Gorge or The Glaciers and all of the beauty that lies between and beyond. The chance should also be taken to be impressed by and get your own examples
of the wonderful art and crafts that the West Coast prides itself on. A good variety of accommodation and restaurants are available in all of the towns and visitors can choose to relocate for the
next day’s play, which the schedule readily allows for, or make any of the towns their base for the duration of the tournament. The courses will be played in the following order, Westport, Reefton, Hokitika and finally Greymouth. Tournament organisers are confident that visitors and locals alike will be impressed with the $14000-plus value prize list. The tournament will be a stableford in three divisions, one for women and two for the men. With fields over 100 in the last two years we expect the limit of 120 players to be reached fairly quickly so enter early to avoid disappointment. Interested readers should email westcoastgolfchallenge@yahoo.co.nz to express interest and receive an information pack, or visit the tournament website at http://westcoastgolfchallenge.com for more information and an entry form. Send your entries to Brian Hampton at brian.hampy@vodafone.co.nz or post entry and cheque payment to West Coast Golf Challenge C/o Brian Hampton, 15 Main Street, Reefron 7830. Entry is confirmed on payment.

Resident Pro at Chisholm Park, Dunedin
A positive investment in New Zealand T
he decision by the New Zealand Government to fund the NZ Open has been debated in many clubhouses, on radio stations and in letters to the editor in local papers. Even some “pro-golf” advocates consider that this is corporate welfare. They believe that the event should stand alone with the financial support of private funds and the golfing community. Why should tax payer funding be required for a golf tournament when there are many other pressing issues for struggling families and communities? Like many golfers, I applaud the government for having the foresight to assist with funding this event. Yes, I am directly involved in the event as the Caddy Master and yes, I am a PGA Golf Professional and a NZPGA Board member. So of course, I am bullish on this matter. The key to the funding increase is around television. It costs approximately $600,000 for three days of coverage that will be broadcast to about 200 million homes, via Sky in New Zealand, in Japan via the Japan Golf Network and to other key markets, including Australia, China and Korea. Having lived in North America and watched several NZ Open events from afar, it is amazing the impact it has on that side of the world. I would often have people engage with me about the golf tournament they were
watching and then talk about visiting New Zealand and even travelling to play golf. The visuals and the stories that unfold in a golf tournament beaming from Queenstown will be stunning. They will really attract the viewer to want to visit, just like we enjoy the amazing visuals from golf tournaments at Pebble Beach, Maui or St Andrews. Each year, we hear from the players that playing golf in Queenstown is one of their highlights of the year, as it is not only the course and location but the other

great things to do in the area. Could Tourism New Zealand spend $600,000 on something else in these international markets and get a better return? Would they be able to get into the homes of these golfers and give them a show with the same “wow” factor? Absolutely not! This is because the NZ Open really does tell the complete “New Zealand story”. We are able to introduce the viewer to the wonders of The Hills golf course, the surrounding mountains and lakes, ideally showcase great weather and also show the viewer some of the great wineries, jet boating experiences and other iconic NZ tourism experiences. Spending any money in print media or other tourism advertising would cost dramatically more to get a similar emotional “like factor” with the intended audience. Like any business you have to spend money advertising and promoting the product. If you don’t present the strengths of the product, then people will not buy. So investing $600,000pa for the television coverage for the NZ Open over the next two years will produce a positive value return. I firmly believe we will see people visiting New Zealand because of it and yes they may even bring their golf clubs! Plus I also know that thousands of golfers around New Zealand, like you, will also enjoy watching the NZ Open!

The real message of the Ryder Cup A
t one level, the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles was a clearcut victory to the European Team over a second rate, strategically outthought and poorly led USA team. Most of the post match analysis has focused on how the USA made the wrong choice in their appointment of Tom Watson, and what needs to be done to get the right captain aboard for Hazeldine in 2016. The PGA of America, who (as with their British counterparts) select the Ryder Cup Captain, now faces many months of intensive scrutiny. This media focus is unfortunate, because not only does it gloss over the close and keenly fought nature of the event, but the huge profile boost for golf the Ryder Cup generates. There is simply no sporting contest I can relate it to. The nearest might be if the All Blacks played the Springboks every two years on a home and away basis, so that we would only see them in New Zealand every four years. They would play rugby over three days –in different forms, including man to man contests. Tickets would be limited to 50,000 per day and priced accordingly. Even that would be a long way from the blend of European cultures and American pride that make up the Ryder Cup. Still more impressive is the fact that the Ryder Cup has been reconstructed from a dying, one-sided golf tournament – USA professionals playing their counterparts from Great Britain & Ireland, with huge dominance by the former until Europeans were included in 1979. The 2014 event could easily have gone the other way. The USA team comfortably won the opening four balls,
PUK
thanks partly to Tom Watson’s decision to send out rookies Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed as a pairing – definitely the boldest gamble made by either captain over the three days. Yes, he could/should have played them on the Friday afternoon as well, but by then the USA was still ahead for much of the foursomes and at that point the British media were getting stuck in to Paul McGinley for his selections, lambasting his “dream team” of Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia, and suggesting his pairing of Ian Poulter and Stephen Gallacher had been an even bigger blunder. McGinley and Europe got out of jail thanks largely to a wayward McIlroy drive on the 18th bouncing the right way off a tree, followed by some Sergio magic which saw the dream team secure a halved match against the run of play.
18th hole at Gleneagles. Photo: Duncan Simpson
The USA team should still have been on an even footing after the Saturday four balls (which they won again), and after that, who knows what might have happened? The margin between success and failure was not major, and McGinley could equally have finished up under the pump on Sunday evening as Watson did if some breaks had gone the other way. Success has many fathers, but failure is an orphan. All of this obscures the huge success of the 2014 Ryder Cup: as a showcase for Scotland, for superb logistics, organisation and facilities, and for delivering an absolutely unique experience for the fans, who in the end are the true point of difference in creating the atmosphere and passion that only the Ryder Cup can deliver. As with the Melbourne Cup, this is an occasion people with only passing interest in the sport as well as die hard fans can relate to and engage with, as a “must do, bucket list” event. That creates an opportunity for golf to draw in casual golfers and lapsed members and reignite their passion for the game. After all, hand to hand match play was the foundation of golf and is the form easiest to relate to: beating your mates and rivals is something we all want to do, and golf’s unique handicap system gives everyone a chance. We may not be able to recreate the full atmosphere of the Ryder Cup, but we should certainly be riding its contribution to the game’s profile, and of course the timing is perfect as we move into the prime of our golfing season.

GOLF EVENT
An enjoyable Festival of Golf at Nelson T
he second Nelson Festival of Golf was enjoyed by all the competitors who came to the Tasman region to take part in what is becoming a “must do” on the New Zealand golfing calendar. Numbers were slightly down on last year, but this was due to a number of entrants having to pull out through injury or illness. Everyone who did manage along had a wonderful time playing the three courses involved in the tournament, namely, Nelson Golf Links, Motueka and Greenacres. The courses were in great condition and the competitors loved the variety that all three courses offered, showcasing the stunning scenery that our region has in abundance. The Event was played in good condition weather, with sunny days all week. The two days at Nelson did prove testing due to the sea breezes, but then links courses do have that knack of attracting windy conditions. Knowing that other regions were having heavy rain meant event organisers were happy to have the sun even with a bit of wind to go with it. “The major sponsors were again hugely supportive,” said tournament director, Derek Drysdale.” Waimea Family Estate Wines and Taylor Made Golf put up a fabulous prize table every day, and the prizes at the end of week prize giving dinner were truly amazing. Three Hole in One Prizes were up for grabs, but unfortunately no-one scored
the ace needed to win the Spa SensatioNZ Hot Tub donated by 4 Seasons Home & Leisure, Nelson or the $5000 of golf equipment from Glyn Delany at Total Golf, or the free membership from Greenacres Golf Club. Thank you to all those sponsors, and let’s have better luck next year” he said. This year a novelty putting competition was held. Every player had one shot at a 60’ putt, with the nearest going into a play off on the 18th green, using a Taylor Made Spider putter worth $300. Under extreme pressure, with everyone watching from the clubhouse balcony, Mike Hawke from McLeans Island club rolled his putt up to 2 inches to win the shootout. He was then delighted to learn that he actually won the Taylor Made Spider putter for his efforts. Mike said that this “almost” made up for the fact that he had lost his wedding ring during the tournament, although I’m not sure his wife had the same view of the situation! Our tournament committee received great feedback from our entrants yet again again this year. Everyone seemed to love to camaraderie that is generated throughout the tournament. It’s fun from start to finish with some great golfing days to enjoy. By concentrating on the little things as much as the main one’s we create an atmosphere where everyone feels a part of this great event.

T
he New Zealand team at the inaugural World Junior Golf Championship in Canada saved its best for last but still finished well off the pace. New Zealand was represented by Wenyung Keh from Auckland, Julianne Alvarez (Wellington) and Alanna Campbell (Bay of Plenty). The format for the tournament was the best two scores counted towards the team’s total. In the final round at the Angus Glen Golf Club in Markha, Ontario, the New Zealanders had a four-over par total of 148 but finished the tournament at 32-over par to be second-last of the 16 teams. They finished 49 shots back from the United States which won the event by 18 strokes from Sweden. In the individual standings, Keh was the best of the Kiwis. She finished 22nd while Campbell, who was on debut for New Zea-
land, was 33rd. Campbell’s tournament was highlighted by her second round effort when she shot even par alongside the world No. 1 Brooke Henderson and round one leader Megan Kang. Alvarez had a four round total of 28-over par to be tied 45th. The competition was open to female players under the age of 19 and who were not playing university or college golf.
Final scores were: 559 United States, 577 Sweden, 580 Canada, 583 Denmark, 587 Spain, 588 Czech, 591 Ireland, England, Belgium, 592 Italy, 596Australia, 598 Finland, 599 Canada, Mexico, 608 New Zealand (302 Wenyung Keh, 307 Alanna Campbell, 316 Julianne Alvarez) 609 Norway.

The Te Puke golf club has been at several locations in its history, but bought its present site in 1978. Golf was first played at Golf Te Puke in 1979. The Te Puke Golf Course was designed by Harry Dale, who has designed many golf courses in the Bay of Plenty area. After designing Titirangi in 1927, MacKenzie went on to design some of the world’s top courses including Augusta, Cypress Point and Royal Melbourne. The par 70 course features elevated tees and greens, challenging bunkers and slick greens with pronounced undulations. Its par 3s face the four points of the compass so no matter what the weather conditions, you experience a different test on each hole. www.titirangigolf.co.nz

Maramarua Golf Club Located just half an hour from Manukau, you can enjoy the peace of the country while still being close to Auckland at Mara-
marua Golf Club. You will also experience one of the best golf courses in the region. The eighth hole at Maramarua requires a long tee shot to the right of a wide fairway. The fairway has trees on both sides, which protect out of bounds on the far right anda hazard on the left. Shots to the left hand side don’t get a shot at the green as this is blocked by mature pine trees. Having placed your 220m-plus drive on the right-hand side of the fairway you have a daunting approach shot over a rock-surrounded pond to a two-tiered green. If the pin is on the top level the landing area is small. Here you will be faced with the decision whether to aim for the top and risk an overshot of play to the lower area and guarantee a difficult two putt. Either way, it’s one heck of a hole! For more information on the course, visit maramarua.co.nz or phone 64 09 232 5702. MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP With both the junior boys and junior girls interprovincial composing of 10 districts each competing they are now extremely good ways to benchmark junior progress between the districts. The junior boys despite missing No.1 Tadhg Campbell (competing in Australia at the Jack Newton) were able for the second year in a row in Cambridge make the final and playoff for the title against Bay of Plenty. Despite a valiant effort and late charge Bay of Plenty for the second year in a row were too strong and won 5-3. It was still a great effort from the boys who fought hard all week in some very close encounters. The week after our junior girls competed in Rotorua and were extremely dominant in round robin play to also make the final against Canterbury. After regulation play both teams were tied on 3-3 so a playoff was needed to decide the title, however Canterbury would come out on top and subsequently win the title. Both junior boys and junior girls teams were obviously disappointed to be beaten in the finals but in the end the result of 2nd out 10 teams for both teams is still a fantastic achievement and we are very proud of our Harbour juniors. Junior Golf in the district remains very strong and these results highlight that fact. GO HARBOUR!
WOMENS PROVINCIAL
The event sponsored by TaylorMade/Adidas Golf was once again a great success with 3 divisions of 48 players competing at the magnificent Omaha Beach Golf Club over the weekend of 20th/21st of September. In the championship final North Shore’s Hanee Song defeated Joanna Kim (Auckland) on the last hole to claim the major title. In the handicap divisions Aprile Everitt (Warkworth) defeated Liz Clarke (Pupuke) in the Upper Harbour Championship while Robyn Currie (Warkworth) defeated Jenny Parkinson (Peninsula) to win the West Coast Trophy. Thank you to all that competed in the tournament.
FREYBERG MASTERS TEAM NAMED The North Harbour selectors have named the team to compete at the 2014 Freyberg Masters. The line-up is as follows: 1. Mike Leeper (Omaha Beach) 2. Rob Simmonds (Muriwai) 3. Rob Noffke (Waitakere)... 4. Stu Nicholls (Waitemata) 5. GOLF TRAILS LOG OF WOOD
Congratulations to the North Shore team for winning the junior North Harbour Golf Log of Wood Tournament. The team was Silvia Brunotti, Eujin Kang, Brian Heo and Oak Archvarin. Brian also scored the highest individual stablefords of the day with 44. Gulf Harbour was a real challenge with the wind but it sure is a lovely Golf Course. Thanks to the Gulf Harbour Country Club for their hospitality and for hosting us in 2014.
Huapai Junior Classic Congratulations to Jake Meenhorst and Katie Pryce Jones who won the North Harbour / Huapai Junior Classic on the 14th of September. Jake scored a 27 hole total of 114 and Katie 118 in very wet and windy conditions. Well done to all the juniors who made it through!
Massey High win Secondary Schools Championship Well done to Masset High School who have won the 2014 Secondary Schools Championship. Despite a late charge from defending the champions Whangarei Boys High School the team was able to win the
event by 3 shots. The players were Tadhg Campbell (Muriwai), Jake Meenhorst (Huapai), Kevin Koong (Huapai) and Jake Lee (Huapai). Of note in the second round was the amazing play of Jake Meenhorst who birdied the last 5 holes to ensure the team victory. Well done guys!
Seniors/Masters Championship The 2014 North Harbour Seniors / Masters Championship was held at Helensville, Huapai and Muriwai Golf Club from the 29th to 31st August with a capacity field of 100 players including a waiting list. It was a brutal three days for the players with wind and rain making things essentially a survival test. The Senior (50+) was won by Tony “Turbo” Treen (Titirangi) shooting 240 for the three rounds to win by 2 shots. Rowland Griffiths (North Shore) won the net competition for the over 50’s. However the difficult condition were handled best by Mike Leeper (Omaha) who won the Masters (40-49) division with a three round total of 223, good enough for a 10 shot win over Rob Simmonds (Muriwai). Congratulation to all that braved the conditions and completed all three rounds
and to the sponsors TaylorMade Golf Pacific and Nobilo Wines who supplied all the prizes!

CLUB FOURSOMES AT MT MAUNGANUI A small field of 6 men pairs and 1 women pair contested the 2014 Club 36 Hole Foursomes Championships at Mount Maunganui Golf Club. Despite the a damp weather forecast the players enjoyed a comfortable morning and a fine warm afternoon. The men’s division saw an interesting contest between the morning and the afternoon rounds with the first round gross leaders of Stefan Andreassen & Mathew Champness with a 74 were unable to hold their leading position scoring an 80 in the afternoon to finish 2 shots adrift. Damian Kempson and Josh Wilson despite a 79 morning gross showed the benefit of a lunch break to score a 73 gross in the afternoon to win by 2 shots – 152 total. Damian and Josh also won the Owen & Pip Kendall Plate in 2013. Leading with a morning net score of 68, the pairing of Peter Kilduff and Murray Chell kept the pressure on to take out the Net trophy by a good margin of 4 shots. Peter showing the benefits of his recent visit to the home of the R&A. Lyndsay Cameron and Philippa McKnight won the Women’s Net Trophy.
Neho from the 135mark hit his shot to 4-5 metres and could not make the birdie but Hillier stayed composed to sink a tricky slider and gain the half that secured the 4.5 to 3.5 victory and deny the Northlanders form achieving their first historic Garrard Shield success. On Sunday the Bay were up against the old foes Waikato. With their all star top three it was vital the Bays lower order performed well and this proved to be the case with Harry Hillier, Jordan Golding, Sam Davis and Landyn Edwards all winning whilst Tyler King gained a half. At the top of the order Bailey Smith fought back for a half with Denzel Ieremia and Charlie Hiller also halved and only captain Hayden Beard suffered a loss with the final result being a 5.5 to 2.5 victory. The next event for Bay of Plenty is a match against last year’s Interprovincial winners Manawatu-Wanganui at Wairakei & Kinloch on 1-2 November. Teams of 8 seniors will take part with the team for the SBS Invitational being named after this event.

GARRARD SHIELD REPORT Bay of Plenty made it eight in a row at Kerikeri Golf Club. However it certainly didn’t look like being the likely outcome after a 4 all draw against a seriously weekend Auckland side on Saturday morning. Rookie Harry Hillier did not get off to the best start with management errors and lost at the 17th. Tyler King blew a dormie 4 lead to end up with a half as did Bailey Smith. After a rusty start Sam Davis fought back from 3 down to gain a half and Hayden Beard also came in with a squared match. The only winners were Landyn Edwards who won in a canter and number one Charlie Hillier who finished 2 up over Josh Leitch. Saturday afternoon the Bay were up against the local Northland side who were charged up after they had caused a boilover in the morning by defeating Waikato 4.5 to 3.5. Harry Hillier was much more composed in defeating former professional Saali Herewini 2/1 and Tyler King held it together to win 4/3. Omanu ‘s Jordan Golding was not disgraced in suffering his 2nd defeat of the day this time to former schoolboy champion Luke Brown. Sam Davis won comfortably whilst Landyn Edwards lost to former Bay rep Sheldon Kearns on the 17th. After being 4 up after 8 holes it all went pear shaped for Hayden Beard who lost on the 18th but two magical moments turned everything in the Bay’s favour. Firstly Bailey Smith made a remarkable up and down on the 18th from rough in a gully 40metres from the pin to hold his precious 1 up lead by halving the hole, then at the culmination of a high quality match between the respective number ones Charlie Hillier went one down to last year’s amateur champion Kadin Neho when he made his 4th birdie on the back nine on the par 5 17th. On the 18th Hillier put his drive behind trees and just off the fairway about 150m out. Somehow he managed to fire his ball over the trouble to land just 2metres from the pin.

NZSGA Nationals at Omokoroa Omokoroa Golf Club has been honoured to host the Men and Ladies Seniors National Tournament in the first week of December 2014. Competitors from as far afield as the South Island, Perth and even from the UK have entered. Omokoroa is a course for the thinker; not too many bunkers but strategically placed, water comes into play on several holes and there is a risk and reward built in. The third, a challenging dogleg with an undulating green is protected on either side by bunkers, not easily reached in two, but for the brave, a risk worth taking. Entries close November 17th, so if you are considering entering, make haste, and don’t miss out on this most prestigious event. Contact Jonathan Lewis jonnpink@ yahoo.com (07) 5480918

GOLF TRAILS Manawatu-Wanganui and hope that other match results went their way if they were to prevail. They took care of the first part of the equation with a dominant 7 – performance over Manawatu-Wanganui. The second part came good when Wellington beat Hawke’s Bay 5-3. This left the three teams all on four points, but Taranaki had the highest number of individual games, won 17, to take out the title for the first time in a decade. Notable individual performances included Tineka Kumeroa and Tyla Winter, who both had three wins from three, and Trish Stewart who had two wins and a half. For Kumeroa, it was an especially impressive effort, as this was her debut playing for the senior team. In the Shand Cup, the men’s senior team had to settle for third place. They went into the final day needing victory against Manawatu-Wanganui to give them an excellent chance of taking the title. However, they went down 6 -3. On Saturday, they fought back to a 5-5 square against the eventual winners Wellington, and then went on to beat Hawke’s Bay 5 -4 in the afternoon. The junior boys’ team did not fare so well going down 3-1 in all their matches. Ethan Jones managed two wins, with Alex Lundt providing the only other success for the boys.
RYDER CUP Manukorihi Golf Club recently hosted a mini Ryder Cup Challenge between the Manukorihi and Urenui Golf clubs on Sunday 5th October. Sunday saw a lovely day dawn for the fabulous concept put together by our Club Professional John Garner. The day began with wine & nibbles. Sixty eight players took part. The format was four ball best ball and it was enjoyed by all players. Manukorihi players used their home advantage and had an easy win 12 ½ to 4 ½ over Urenui. The Trophy was sponsored by the local New World and made of lovely native timbers by Bruce Cowley. This was a great day enjoyed by all and will be played in two years time at Urenui.
Club President, David Butler holds the Trophy played for on the day and club Professional John Garner holds the replica he was presented with when he was in an actual Ryder Cup team.

ral season of Nine and Dine, sponsored by Trinity Hill. “Nine and Dine is a great way to start the weekend”, says Pro Brett Allan. “A relaxed, fun series of events – it’s all about catching up with friends, enjoying some great golf and delicious food, in a beautiful tranquil setting!” Starting on 7 November, Nine and Dine is happening once a month at Hastings Golf Club, on a Friday, up until March 2015. “It is only $20 per person, which includes a fabulous buffet meal and the chance to win some fantastic prizes. Hastings Golf Club is keen to appeal to the whole family. “If your husband or wife doesn’t play golf, but would like to join you for dinner – we can accommodate this as well, for just $15.” Nine and Dine kicks off on 7 November with a shotgun start at 5.30pm. No need to book in advance, but all participants must be signed up in the Pro Shop by 5.15pm. Come and enjoy 9 holes of golf at one of the best courses in the region. Please visit the website www.hastingsgolfclub.co.nz or email info@hastingsgolfclub.co.nz for more details. Hastings Golf Club would like to thank Trinity Hill for supporting Nine and Dine.
The final four rounds will be played at the Napier club on November 15 and 16. “I used to hate playing at Napier when I was younger but I play the Waiohiki course pretty well now,” Mitchell said. He will have to if he wants to become a first time recipient of the top No 1 trophy. Another unbeaten No 1 is Hastings kingpin Stu Duff and his high levels of composure in pressure situations have been well documented over the years. Mitchell pointed out the field had a variety of conditions to deal with at the weekend, dry and firm on Saturday and extremely wet yesterday. With no more tournaments until the next rounds of the Greenwood Cup Mitchell will have plenty of time to hone his game. Maraenui will take a one- point lead over Napier into the fourth round and Hastings are another point behind in third place.

Maraenui’s Mitchell aiming high SOURCE: Shane Hurndell/ Hawkes Bay Today
Maraenui’s Russell Mitchell plays a fairway shot during an unbeaten run in Greenwood Cup play at Waipukurau during the weekend. A couple of trophies have proved elusive for Maraenui golfer Russell Mitchell during recent seasons. One is the Greenwood Cup, one of Golf Hawke’s Bay’s most prestigious men’s interclub trophies, and the other is for the most successful No1 in the Greenwood Cup. With Maraenui winning their first three rounds in the seven round competition at Waipukurau during the weekend and Mitchell winning all three of his matches he staked an early claim for the 2014 double. “That top No 1 trophy is one I’ve been aiming for for a while and I’m starting to play a bit better now,” said Mitchell, who has played in at least six Greenwood Cup events and been Maraenui’s No1 for the last four. Maraenui haven’t tasted Greenwood Cup glory since 2002 but Mitchell has every right to be confident about the team’s chances this year. “We’ve got a really good team. It’s similar to recent seasons but everyone has got that little bit better and we’ve all got a bit more experience.” During Maraenui’s 7.5-2.5 win against Dannevirke on Saturday Mitchell beat Brad Truesdale 2 up. He carded a 2 and 1 victory against Hugh Harrison during yesterday morning’s 8.5-1.5 win against Takapau and was in commanding form during a 6 and 5 win against Nick Radonich as Maraenui walloped Waipukurau 9-1 in yesterday afternoon’s round.

GOLF TRAILS The match fittingly went down to the wire, with 6 of the 8 matches going to at least the 17th Hole to be decided. The 6&5 win to Tom Spearman Burn and 5&4 win to Brad Rowland were enough to spur the rest of the team to a narrow 4.5-3.5 victory, and in the process wrap up the Taswell Trophy for yet another year. Although Wellington recorded the same amount of individual match wins as North Harbour, the overall team points are the deciding factor for the format of this tournament, and hence Wellington took out the overall honours. This tournament win sits nicely alongside the recent Shand Cup win against Taranaki, Manawatu/Wanganui and Hawkes Bay, and the squad is now gaining some positive momentum as Wellington builds towards the 2014 Toro Interprovincial Championships, which are to be held at St Andrews in Hamilton from the 2nd till the 6th December.
CHAMPIONSHIP WINNERS AT CARTERTON The Carterton Golf Club Championship finals were played at the Club on 12th October 2014. Winners of the Ladies Chapionships, pictured, are Gay Martin Bronze One, Vicki Bain Silver, Val Edwards Bronze B.
Member Scott Coan who is formerly from Boston was the inspiration behind the concept with these events a common fixture amongst the American private club scene. Points from matches are awarded based on how many holes each team wins or loses over the course of their 9 hole matches. If for example a team wins 2/1 they get awarded 2 points whilst their opponents have 2 points subtracted. It’s a format that keeps the result in the balance right until the end.

Going into the final round it was a close call call between Rangiora/Hororata, Christchurch and Russley White – just 5 points between them. Full Results The Canterbury Junior Foursomes games are a great way to get children involved in playing golf while being part of a team. Blank Cup – Anthony Weatherhead takes home the Salver for Top Individual Scorer Source: Canterbury Golf
The Blank Cup round robin has come to an end again and it came with a great 9 iron shot on the 18th hole to decide who got into the play-offs. Well done Jed Toomey and bad luck Harley. With that win Russley White jumped into the 4th play off spot ahead of Waitkiri and Clearwater who raced up the ladder to finish in a creditable fifth place. Good luck and play well to all the teams who made the semi-finals. The Blank Cup wouldn’t be if all the clubs didnt participitate so thank you to all the other teams for being there every Sunday and good luck with your rebuild for next year. The winner of the O’Malley Salver this year was Anthony Weatherhead with 8.5 wins from 9 games, well done Anthony, you should be playing Woody in a year or two.
Canterbury Men at Quadrangular Source: Canterbury Golf
The 3 Under Canterbury Men’s Team followed their opening match against Aorangi-South Canterbury with the Men’s Quadrangular an opportunity to face some strong competition from the North Island and neigbours Tasman. The annual match is played between Canterbury, Tasman, Wellington and North Harbour with 8 players in each team. For most of the Canterbury team this was their first look at the Marlborough Golf Club with extensive out of bounds and hazards there was plenty for the guys to be taking notes on during their practice round. Otago GC Take Senior Pennant For 2014 SOURCE: Golf Otago
Before a rare win four years ago, the Otago club men’s pennant team had not won the provincial senior A pennant title since 1994, but it was far too strong on the Lower Waitaki course in Oamaru yesterday. The Balmacewen golfers dominated the contest, beating North Otago 5.5-0.5 and claiming four wins against a strong Queenstown sextet with one match halved. Balmacewen had been a dominant force when it won the title in 1991, 1993 and 1994 and yesterday’s win could be the start of a new era. For Otago, Daniel Elder, Jason Hughes and Luke Murdoch had two wins while Nick Borren and James Anstiss emerged unbeaten with a win and a half each. For Queenstown, Wakatipu schoolboy Sungwoo Han had two wins while Simon Hollyer emerged unbeaten with two halves. North Otago greenkeeper and top Otago masters (over-40) golfer Gary Creedy was the only Oamaru golfer to feature, halving with Hollyer in the morning and Borren in the afternoon. In a dominant display, Otago won nine of the possible 12 games while Queenstown had one win and six games to finish second. The event became a triangular contest when South Otago failed to front up with a team for the final.
Southland Retains Salisbury Cup at St Clair Source: Golf Otago
Southland retained the Salisbury Cup by beating the Otago women’s golf team by 10 to 6 at St Clair yesterday. A new-look Otago team was competitive throughout, trailing Southland by three games to four with one halved match in the reverse singles in the morning round. Arrowtown’s Jo Hicks-Beach was the top Otago performer, posting two wins against the top Southland golfers, while Julie-Ann Kelly (Tapanui) emerged unbeaten with a win and a-half. Hicks-Beach dominated her morning match, beating Angela Gerkin on the 15th green in the morning. She had a tougher battle in the afternoon against Southland No 1 Robyn Pullar but looked to have the match under control at three ahead. But Pullar fought back and Hicks-Beach held on to win by a single hole on the final green. Otago No 2 Sally Shaw had a tight battle with Pullar in the morning but the experienced Southlander forged ahead on the back nine. Playing at No 4, Columba College pupil Abigael Crawford won the final hole to escape with a half with Olivia Frost.
Another schoolgirl making her debut at No 6 was Annabel Evans, who turned one down but won the final hole to beat Fiona Murray in her morning match. At No 7, Kelly had a tough morning match against Anne Osment which see-sawed throughout but she finished strongly, winning 16 and 17 to clinch the win. In the afternoon, Kelly was tested again and finished tied with Helen Baird in a tight match which went all the way. Otago is on track to rebuild and selection convener Lisa Joyce will study the weekend’s results and announce an eight-strong team to compete in the South Island teams event in Nelson on November 1 and 2.
honours in the bronze championship by a single stroke from Heriot’s Lesley Claque, while Janet Cochrane (Wanaka) triumphed in the bronze runner-up division. The premier club was decided under the gross stableford format and Chisholm Park Weekend prospered, with 93 points. Sally Shaw led the way with 38 points, supported by Leeanne Henry (28) and Marg Hore (27). Led by McRae, Wanaka finished second with 92 points, St Clair on 91 and Otago was one further shot back, with 90 stablefords.

The Otago women’s champion of champions title was decided in a three-way playoff involving Jo Hicks-Beach, Susan Greig and Liz McRae after all three finished with a 36-hole aggregate of 164 for two rounds at Chisholm Park. Greig looked to have the title in the bag after a morning 78 which was five shots clear of Wanaka’s Liz McRae. But Greig (St Clair) struck difficulties in the afternoon, ballooning out to an 86, to bring McRae (Wanaka) and Hicks-Beach (Queenstown) back into contention. Hicks-Beach took the title in a playoff, which should give her confidence going into the contest between Otago and Southland for the Salisbury Cup at St Clair on Sunday.
